Three brothers have hooked a monster tuna weighing 107.5 kilograms off the coast of south-west Victoria.

During a fishing trip in Apollo Bay on the Surf Coast, brothers Peter, Michael, and Andreas Salloum, together with their cousin, had an unexpected encounter with a southern bluefin tuna.

The group of four spent two hours battling to reel in the enormous fish.

“We were all completely astonished,” Michael shared with 9News.

“Even our charter captain couldn’t believe it,” he added.

Southern bluefin tuna are highly sought after worldwide, sometimes commanding prices as high as $683 per kilogram. Nonetheless, recreational anglers in Australia are not allowed to sell their catches.

The brothers have shared their monster trophy among family and friends.

“Some of it is in our freezer, some of it is in our bellies and some of it has been eaten by our friends and family,” Michael said.

“Definitely something we’ll remember, a hundred kilos is not something you catch every day,” Peter said.

A 243-kilogram bluefin tuna sold for a record 510 million yen ($4.47 million) at a Tokyo market in January.

Urgent Rescue Operation Underway as Five Villagers Found Alive in Flooded Laotian Cave

0

In a dramatic turn of events, five villagers who disappeared in a flooded cave in Laos have been discovered alive by elite divers on Wednesday. Now, rescue teams are in a race against time to extract them and locate two others who are still unaccounted for.

The organization Rescue Volunteer for People announced online, “We’ve found five people alive and all safe. There are still two people we are searching for.”

The group was located in an underground chamber in Xaisomboun province, situated roughly 50 miles north of the Laotian capital, Vientiane, according to a report by CNN.

Although the five have been found, the floodwaters continue to trap them, prompting officials to devise a safe extraction strategy.

To aid in this challenging mission, a contingent of 15 divers, known for their role in the dramatic rescue of a Thai youth soccer team in June 2018, has been deployed. These divers are navigating through treacherous narrow tunnels and unstable conditions to ensure the villagers’ safe return.

The villages went into the cave in the Southeast Asian nation to look for gold — but became trapped when heavy rains suddenly flooded the entrance.

The five survivors are “all healthy and in good spirits, but the extraction is still ahead and it ain’t going to be easy,” Finnish diver Mikko Paasi, who helped rescue the soccer players, wrote on social media.

Rescuers had to carry out a steep 2.5 mile walk just to reach the cave entrance before making their way inside through muddy passageways and narrow tunnels.

Passageways were so tight so rescuers could only go through in a single file.

In the evening they enjoyed a huge meal with their own personalised cocktail menu, with the influencers being the ‘Molly-Mae margarita’ and her sister’s the ‘Zoe zest spritz’.

Molly-Mae shot to fame in the show’s fifth series when she found love with Tommy, finishing as runners-up to Amber Gill and Greg O’Shea – who parted ways just weeks later.

Already an influencer before joining the show, Molly has amassed 7.9 million Instagram followers and landed a six-figure deal when she signed with fast fashion chain PLT in 2019 to become their creative director.

Molly-Mae has made bumper profits via her company MMH Group Holdings and her self-tanning business Filter.

She added to her cash pot with her memoir released in June 2022 – Becoming Molly-Mae – which sold at a cost of £20 and bulked up her fortune by £2million during the pandemic.

Despite Stock Market Surge, Majority of Americans Tighten Spending Amid Economic Uncertainty

WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumer confidence in the U.S. took a modest dip this month, with persistently high gas prices and inflation maintaining pressure on household budgets, contrasting sharply with the buoyant stock market, which remains close to all-time highs.

The Conference Board reported a 0.7-point decrease in its consumer confidence index, bringing it down to 93.1 in May. This marks the first decline following a three-month upward trend. Although this index has not plummeted as drastically as other consumer sentiment measures this year, it remains relatively low compared to pre-pandemic levels, where it consistently hit 130.

Another measure of consumer sentiment, published by the University of Michigan last week, revealed a historic low for the month. The escalating costs of gas and groceries have intensified inflation, outpacing average wage growth and diminishing the purchasing power of many Americans. Dissatisfaction with President Trump’s economic strategies is evident in polls, which could spell trouble for Republicans as the midterm elections approach.

Despite the economy’s continued expansion and a persistently low unemployment rate, consumer sentiment remains largely pessimistic. Some economists suggest this disparity highlights a “K-shaped” recovery, where wealthier Americans benefit from rising stock markets and maintain their spending levels, while lower-income households find themselves struggling.

The consumer confidence report released on Tuesday noted an increase in confidence among households earning $100,000 or more, while confidence declined among other income groups.

“The prospect of higher prices and faster inflation continues to loom over confidence readings with many households taking a more cautious approach to purchases this year,” Ben Ayers, Nationwide senior economist, said.

There were some positive signs, Ayers noted: Americans’ expectations for growth six months in the future improved, potentially a sign they expect the Iran war to be over by then.

Still, Americans’ outlook on the job market worsened slightly. The proportion of respondents who said jobs are “plentiful” dropped to 25.5%, the lowest in three years. At the same time, just 18.6% said jobs were “hard to get,” the smallest percentage since October. The findings reflect the “low-hire, low-fire” job market that has made it harder for those out of work to obtain new jobs.

Gas prices have soared to a nationwide average of $4.49 a gallon from $2.98 just before the war began at the end of February, and have been at or above $4.50 a gallon for nearly all of May.

This month, the Conference Board added special questions to its survey, which found rising prices have caused most Americans to change their spending habits. Two-thirds of respondents said they are cutting back spending in response to the increases, with most of those reducing overall purchases and delaying more expensive acquisitions.

Many consumers are also planning to economize on clothes, shoes, hobby items, and toys and games, the survey found.

Inflation jumped to 3.8% in April, the highest in three years and far above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. In addition to more expensive gas, grocery prices have also started rising more quickly, likely driven by higher shipping costs. Beef prices have also risen sharply, as drought and other factors have reduced cattle herds.

The higher prices are reducing Americans’ average inflation-adjusted incomes. Average hourly earnings, adjusted for price changes, shrank in April from a year earlier for the first time in three years.

Other data also suggests consumers have grown more cautious amid rising prices. Adjusted for inflation, retail sales actually declined in April, after a solid increase in March.

And the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index fell to a record-low 44.8 in May, its third straight decline, as a majority of respondents said rising prices were hurting their personal finances.

Unveiling the Dark Humor: Mackenzie Shirilla’s Reaction to ‘Shirilla the Killa’ Nickname

Mackenzie Shirilla, currently serving time behind bars, has become a subject of interest following revelations from her alleged former girlfriend. The latter disclosed some intriguing aspects of Shirilla’s life in prison, including the nickname she has earned among fellow inmates.

Shyann Topping allegedly began a brief romance with Shirilla just weeks before her own release from prison, according to an account she shared in a series of TikToks.

Initially, Shirilla caught the attention of Topping, her ex-girlfriend, when she was spotted walking with a friend at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in 2023. Despite noticing her presence, Topping refrained from approaching Shirilla at first. However, fate intervened, and through a mutual acquaintance, the two women eventually met and formed a close bond. Topping recounted that Shirilla took meticulous care of her appearance, a detail that stood out even in the confines of prison life.

Though Topping noticed Shirilla walking around the track with a friend not long after she had arrived  at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in 2023, she had initially steered clear of her.

In a series of posts, Topping revealed that Shirilla was particular about her diet, claiming, “I don’t eat prison food.” Instead, she relied on cooking daily with supplies bought from the commissary, a habit that Topping mentioned was quite costly.

But eventually the two were introduced through a mutual acquaintance and quickly hit it off. According to Topping, despite being behind bars, Shirilla took great care to maintain her appearance.

The living conditions at the prison varied, with Shirilla residing in a distinct “cottage” known for housing “lifers” or privileged inmates. This facility boasted amenities such as flat-screen TVs, communal couches, and individual rooms with doors that could be closed, as described by Topping in her TikTok revelations. Despite these separate living arrangements, Shirilla and Topping managed to maintain their connection through frequent visits to the prison yard, where they met several times a day.

She also alleged in the series of posts that Shirilla told her, “I don’t eat prison food,” and cooked everyday using items she’d purchased from the commissary, a strategy that Topping said would cost “a lot of money.”

The two inmates lived in separate “cottages” or buildings on the prison grounds. Shirilla, who worked in maintenance at the time, lived in one that Topping described as being for “lifers or like really privileged inmates,” which had flat screen tvs, couches in a common area and rooms where you could close your door, she explained in the TikTok post. Although they were unable to go into each other’s cottages, they would connect during multiple trips to the prison yard each day.

What is Mackenzie Shirilla’s Nickname in Prison?

Initially, as the two were getting to know each other, Topping told People there were false rumors floating around prison that Topping was serving time for trafficking children and she was eager to clear up the misconception. As she explained on TikTok, the rumor was the result of mistaken identity after another prisoner had a similar name.

“I gave her my ID card so she could look and see what [my real] charges were,” Topping told the outlet, “and she was like, ‘Oh, it’s okay, don’t take it personally.’”

Then, Shirilla allegedly laughed and went on to explain that others behind bars called her “Shirilla the Killa.”

What Has Mackenzie Shirilla Said About The Fatal Crash While Behind Bars?

Shirilla is serving a sentence of 15 years to life after prosecutors said she intentionally drove her car at speeds reaching 100 mph into a brick wall, killing boyfriend Dominic Russo and their friend Davion Flanagan.

Investigators charged her with murder after finding evidence to suggest Shirilla had pressed the accelerator “to its full extent” and never applied the brakes, according to a statement from the Cuyahuga County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney.

According to Topping, Shirilla, whose story is chronicled in Netflix’s The Crash, opened up about the fatal wreck but insisted—as she did in court—that she had no memory of the incident and claimed that it happened as the result of a medical emergency.

“She never really made light of what happened,” Topping told People. “And she would talk about Dom and Davey a lot in a loving, regarding way.”

Topping added on TikTok that Shirilla was convinced her murder convictions would be overturned on appeal.

“She was telling me how she was working on an appeal. She’s going home, like she’s going to be home. I’ll meet her,” Topping remembered. “We’re going to talk when we got home. We’re going to continue this outside when…she got home.”

At the time, Topping told People, “I honestly believed maybe she’s not guilty because of the limited information she had.”

“When I left prison I did not view Mackenzie as the monster she [is now being] portrayed as,” Topping explained. “When I first got out I was like, ‘Oh, they don’t know what this girl’s been through.’”

But after Topping was released from prison and began to research the case herself, her view changed.

”I just realized that maybe she is not a good person,” she told People, “that maybe she was just showing me what I wanted to see because she found me attractive.”

Shirilla’s chances at an appeal were squashed in March by the Ohio Eighth District Court of Appeals, who ruled that her appeal had been filed one day past the jurisdictional deadline, according to Court TV.

She won’t be eligible for parole until 2037, according to jail records reviewed by Oxygen.

Unveiling Hidden Health Risks: What You Need to Know After Kyle Busch’s Tragic Passing

0

The unexpected passing of NASCAR legend Kyle Busch has prompted experts to issue a stark warning about the dangers of pneumonia and its potential to become deadly.

Kyle Busch, a celebrated two-time NASCAR champion and father of two, passed away unexpectedly on May 21 at the age of 41. According to the Associated Press, he became unresponsive while using a racing simulator in Concord, North Carolina, just a day before his death. Witnesses noted he had been experiencing severe symptoms, including coughing up blood.

Medical examinations later revealed that Busch succumbed to ‘severe pneumonia,’ which escalated into sepsis, a critical and life-threatening condition.

A spokesperson for Kyle Busch Companies shared that the medical assessment provided to Busch’s family detailed a series of events that led to “rapid and overwhelming associated complications.”

Pneumonia is an infection that causes inflammation in the air sacs of the lungs. It can be triggered by bacteria, viruses, or even fungi, making it a serious health concern.

The condition typically develops as a result of an additional illness, such as a flu or severe cold.

It is fairly common as millions of people are diagnosed every year – most often during respiratory virus season. About 1.2 million emergency department visits are attributed to pneumonia and approximately 40,000 people die from it, according to the CDC.

In the days since his death, concerning details emerged about Busch’s final weeks, with many pointing to signs that he was struggling with a medical issue shortly before.

During a race in upstate New York on May 10 he could be heard radioing for medical assistance from his car in an audio clip that Fox NASCAR shared on X.

With 38 laps to go, he could be heard telling his team to fetch Dr Bill Heisel, a longtime physician assistant often utilized by NASCAR for trackside medical needs.

‘Tell him I need him after the race, please…’ he said. ‘I’m going to need a shot.’

According to the Fox TV broadcast, Busch had been struggling with a sinus cold that was exacerbated by the intense G-forces and elevation changes at the New York road course.

Following a later race on May 15, Busch, who is survived by his wife Samantha and their two children, Brexton, 11, and Lennix, four, admitted that he was still struggling with a ‘substantial’ cough in an interview with The Athletic.

Dr Todd Ellerin, chief of infectious disease at South Shore Health near Boston, told the Daily Mail that the infection that was causing Busch’s reported ‘sinus cold’ in the weeks leading up to his death ‘could have progressed to pneumonia or could have left him vulnerable for a secondary infection of the lungs by a different microbe.’

Symptoms of pneumonia often include a fever, weakness, a cough that produces phlegm, shortness of breath, confusion or delirium, chest pain, pleurisy (chest pain with a deep breath) and rapid breathing.

Pneumonia is diagnosed through a physical exam in which a doctor listens to a patient’s lungs for abnormal breath sounds, along with a detailed patient history or recent infections and symptoms.

If pneumonia is suspected, an X-ray or CT scan of the lungs is ordered to confirm inflammation. Depending on the type of pneumonia and what is causing it, treatment includes antibiotics or symptom management with supportive therapies.

It is not known whether Busch was receiving care for any ongoing illness or whether he was evaluated for pneumonia.

Ellerin, who has not treated Busch as a patient, added that sometimes pneumonia isn’t immediately suspected if a person has what seems like a run-of-the-mill cold but otherwise looks fine.

‘Some patients can present initially looking well with what we call an upper respiratory tract infection involving sinuses or cold-like symptoms or even lower respiratory tract symptoms involving bronchitis but without pneumonia,’ he said. ‘A minority of these infections can progress to pneumonia at a later time point.’

Dr Omer Awan, a board-certified radiologist and professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, who has also not evaluated Busch as a patient, told the Daily Mail that it is possible Busch’s ‘sinus cold’ was an upper viral infection.

‘Viral infections are known to become super infected with bacteria,’ he said. ‘This could have then caused a bacterial pneumonia – although this is speculative.’

Other doctors, who have also not seen Busch as a patient or evaluated his health or medical records, told Daily Mail that pneumonia is a common cause of sepsis, which is the body’s extreme overreaction to an infection.

Sepsis, which impacts about 1.7 million adults and 18,000 children in the US, can occur if there is delayed treatment or lack of appropriate treatment of pneumonia.

‘Think of pneumonia like a snow storm and sepsis like a blizzard,’ Ellerin said. ‘You can do all the right things to prepare for a blizzard but it can still be overwhelming.’

Awan said that ‘pneumonia can progress to sepsis if the infection is severe or aggressive and the immune system mistakenly senses a widespread threat to the body.’

‘In response,’ he added, ‘our immune system mounts not only a targeted response to the infection but also mistakenly attacks normal healthy tissues and organs, which can injure many organs like the kidneys liver and heart. Widespread injury and inflammation can lead to organ failure and ultimately death if not treated appropriately and quickly.’

Once a patient develops sepsis, it can lead to multi-organ failure, uncontrolled bleeding, poor oxygenation and stiff lungs that make breathing difficult, eventually resulting in death.

Busch, who competed in more than 760 races during a storied 24-year career, is believed to have collapsed the day before his death while using a racing simulator in a presumed practice session for the Coca-Cola 600, which was held on Sunday. NASCAR held a tribute to Busch before the race, and the late driver’s wife was in attendance – she broke down into tears while embracing their two children.

‘I’ve got an individual that’s shortness of breath, very hot, thinks he’s going to pass out, and he’s producing a little bit of blood, coughing up some blood,’ the 911 caller was heard telling operators on the emergency call that day.

The caller repeatedly explained Busch was ‘awake’ and lying on the bathroom floor as he waited for paramedics to arrive.

Dr Roberto Swazo, a pulmonologist at Orlando Health told the Daily Mail that pneumonia and sepsis together can also lead to septic shock and respiratory failure, causing the lungs to no longer be able to provide enough oxygen to keep organs functioning properly.

‘Even with aggressive treatment in the intensive care unit, sepsis and septic shock carry a significant risk of death, particularly in older adults and patients with underlying health conditions,’ he added.

According to the CDC, at least 350,000 adults and more than 1,800 children who develop sepsis die.

In the wake of his death, it has emerged that the larger-than-life driver appeared out of sorts during final encounters with fans and friends.

The day before he died, California woman Pamela D Hauck ran into Busch after traveling to Charlotte to watch him race at the Coca-Cola 600.

Hauck and two other women took a photo with the NASCAR great after meeting him at the Richard Childress Racing Museum on Wednesday, and in a post on Facebook she revealed he was ‘not feeling great’ at the time.

In the comments section, Hauck was asked by another user if she noticed anything that was ‘off’ about Busch.

‘He was definitely off,’ she responded, ‘… not feeling great just not himself, but we were so damned excited he was there it was a special treat.’

She also claimed that Busch seemed ‘like he had a bad cold or [was] getting over the flu’ and ‘just crummy.’

Andrew Murstein – who was friends with Busch for roughly 20 years – has raised the possibility that his good pal may have been struggling with an illness three weeks ago, too.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Murstein, an American tycoon and former NASCAR team owner, explained how Busch recently backed out of a ‘sports-themed’ dinner he was hosting at legendary NYC restaurant Rao’s.

‘I don’t know if he was feeling ill at the time and he didn’t want to tell me, but he wasn’t able to come,’ Murstein said.

Most recently, Busch’s bitter rival Brad Keselowski shared that their final exchange had lacked their typical fiery rapport.

Keselowski, who even admitted that the pair ‘were not friends’ due to their sporting battles, happened to bump into Busch as they traveled to Dover, Delaware, for the NASCAR All-Star race four days before Busch’s death.

‘We were in a race and you get in a race and you don’t really see each other. So I saw him on the racetrack.’

Solomon Islands’ Newly Elected Prime Minister Plans First Official Visit to Australia

0

The newly appointed Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands is set to travel to Australia for discussions with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. This meeting comes amid hopes that the leader, previously known for his critical stance on China, will place a stronger emphasis on strengthening ties with Canberra over Beijing.

Prime Minister Albanese is scheduled to welcome Matthew Wale at the Parliament House on June 3 for a leaders’ summit.

Wale, who took office earlier this month following the ousting of his predecessor in a no-confidence vote, will be accompanied by a delegation of cabinet ministers during his visit.

Key topics on the agenda are expected to include economic development and security cooperation.

“Prime Minister Wale’s choice to visit Australia on his first official international trip underscores the significance of the relationship between our countries,” Albanese remarked.

“Despite the global challenges we confront, we recognise we are stronger facing these together as partners.”

Wale has been critical of a deal signed between the Solomon Islands and China, which was agreed upon in 2022 and sparked concerns from Australia.

The policing and military deal would impact security in the region and put relationships with other allies at risk, he warned at the time.

He has since softened his stance, leading a delegation to Beijing and offering support to the nation’s ‘One China’ foreign policy position.

Australia has signalled it is willing to upgrade security ties with the Solomon Islands, if Wale is prepared to do so.

Unveiling Meija Moreno: The Woman Linked to West Wilson Amidst Amanda Batula Romance Rumors

West Wilson’s notorious reputation has finally caught up with him. During the first segment of the Season 10 reunion of Summer House, Wilson faced intense scrutiny over his unexpected relationship with Amanda Batula. Additionally, he was questioned about another woman he allegedly claimed exclusivity with while his romance with Batula was budding.

According to a report by Page Six, Wilson, who became part of the Summer House cast in Season 8, was said to be in a committed relationship with Meija Moreno when he and Batula began their affair earlier this year. An insider revealed that the two had been seeing each other exclusively since the fall/winter of 2025. Wilson reportedly did not disclose his involvement with Batula to Moreno until he was certain it would become public knowledge, maintaining to Moreno that he wasn’t seeing anyone else until then.

In the reunion episode airing tonight, Wilson was confronted by Ciara Miller, his former romantic interest and Batula’s erstwhile best friend. Miller accused Wilson of living a double life, presenting one persona on-camera and another off-camera. She further corroborated Page Six’s report, confirming the existence of his “girlfriend” named Meija.

So, who exactly is Meija Moreno, and was Batula aware of her? Here is what we have gathered!

Who is Meija Moreno?

Meija Moreno, who goes by @meijamoreno on Instagram, is an artist based in Philadelphia. She was in a relationship with West Wilson when his connection with Amanda Batula came to light. Moreno and Wilson allegedly met during their time at Montana State University. She is the visionary behind Snarl Studios, a fashion brand that specializes in custom ties crafted from real horsehair. Moreno provided Wilson and Lindsay Hubbard with horsehair ties for their respective appearances on Watch What Happens Live. During his visit to the Bravo Clubhouse on March 24, Wilson gave a nod to Moreno and her company, in the same episode where he dismissed the rumors of a romance with Batula.

Was West Wilson in a relationship when he started dating Amanda Batula?

Yes, Wilson confirmed that he and Moreno were seeing each other romantically when he sparked up a relationship with Batula. Per Hubbard, Moreno was under the impression that she and Wilson were “exclusive” pretty much up until he and Batula dropped their joint statement on March 31. In fact, Moreno even spent the night at Wilson’s NYC apartment the night before his March 24 appearance on WWHL.

So, let us break it down for you even more. Wilson and Moreno allegedly became exclusive in fall/winter 2025 (over a year ago). Wilson and Batula (allegedly) started talking in February. They had their first kiss on March 1. Moreno slept over at Wilson’s apartment on March 23. The joint statement confirming Batula and Wilson’s romance was posted on March 31.

So, did Batula know he was dating Moreno when they started seeing each other? “Yeah,” she confessed during the reunion.

“And you didn’t care?” Andy Cohen questioned, to which Batula replied, “We had a whole conversation about it.”

5 Spine-Chilling Horror Films That Earned Roger Ebert’s Rare Perfect Score

Renowned as one of the most influential voices in film criticism, Roger Ebert’s reviews carried significant weight. Whether acknowledged openly by filmmakers or not, earning a flawless score from Ebert was akin to receiving a coveted seal of approval. What set Ebert apart was his open-mindedness; he approached every genre without bias, including horror, giving each film its fair chance to impress.

Ebert was known to have awarded his prestigious four-star rating to several horror films. Some choices might catch readers off guard, but many are celebrated classics within the genre. It’s intriguing to revisit Ebert’s reflections on these films even now, decades after their release. His insightful critiques continue to resonate, inviting audiences to explore his top picks and perhaps experience them anew.

Let’s delve into the five horror films that Roger Ebert deemed worthy of his highest praise and explore the reasons behind his admiration. Prepare to rediscover these cinematic gems and perhaps offer your own enthusiastic endorsement!

One such film is “The Blair Witch Project,” which captivated audiences in 1999 with its innovative found-footage style and clever online marketing strategy. The film’s realistic feel drew viewers into the terrifying journey of three student filmmakers as they hunted for the mythical Blair Witch in a haunting forest. Despite the witch never appearing on screen, the film managed to evoke a profound sense of dread, especially with its chilling conclusion.

Upon its release, “The Blair Witch Project” garnered widespread acclaim, with critics admiring the filmmakers’ ability to create a horror sensation on a modest budget. Roger Ebert awarded the film his perfect score, highlighting its masterful manipulation of fear and its reliance on psychological tension over special effects to unsettle its audience.

The Blair Witch Project

Thanks to its found-footage approach and successful marketing campaign that made full use of the internet, “The Blair Witch Project” captured the public attention in 1999. It felt all too real — as if the audience were there, experiencing the same terror as the three filmmaking students seeking out the fabled Blair Witch in an unsettling forest. Oh, and “The Blair Witch Project” ending … it still chills the bone. Remarkably, the witch is never shown — not even once — but the mere thought of her brings terror.

Upon arrival, “The Blair Witch Project” drew widespread praise from critics, with most appreciating how the filmmakers created a titan of terror on the budget of a toasted sandwich. Roger Ebert gave the film a perfect rating, emphasizing  the film’s understanding of fear and reliance on the human mind to do the heavy lifting rather than flashy effects.

“At a time when digital techniques can show us almost anything, ‘The Blair Witch Project’ is a reminder that what really scares us is the stuff we can’t see,” he wrote. “The noise in the dark is almost always scarier than what makes the noise in the dark.”

Body Snatchers

By the ’90s, there had already been several screen adaptations of Jack Finney’s novel “The Body Snatchers.” However, director Abel Ferrara’s version connected with a new generation of viewers.

“Body Snatchers” has a simple setup: Teenager Marti Malone (Gabrielle Anwar) and her family move to a military base with her dad Steve (Terry Kinney). Soon, the family discovers that the humans are being replaced by alien clones. The only way to tell if something is off is the lack of emotion from the clone. How do you prove a major conspiracy like this? And who can you trust?

“Body Snatchers” wasn’t a slam-dunk with many critics. However, similar to the more-hated movies that Roger Ebert loved, the critic went against the grain, with high praise for the film — to the point he gave it four out of four stars. He also appreciated how Ferrara used the military base setting to his narrative advantage, writing, “Ferrara’s key scenes mostly take place at night, on the Army base, where most of the other people are already podlike in their similar uniforms, language and behavior. There is a crafty connection made between the Army’s code of rigid conformity, and the behavior of the pod people, who seem like a logical extension of the same code.”

The Shining

Author Stephen King might feel differently about the film adaptation of “The Shining,” but it’s now commonly heralded as one of the greatest horror movies of all time. The way in which director Stanley Kubrick showcases Jack Torrance’s (Jack Nicholson) unraveling within the Overlook Hotel is a master class in scary storytelling. The unnerving story similarly pushes viewers to the brink, worrying about the safety of Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and Danny (Danny Lloyd), as they’re trapped inside this spooky hotel with Jack — if it is still Jack, or something more sinister at play.

When it was released in 1980, though, not every critic was enamored. In fact, even major publications like Variety gave “The Shining” bad reviews. Roger Ebert, however, saw what lay beneath and the film’s ability to toy with the viewer.

“In a snowbound hotel, three people descend into versions of madness or psychic terror, and we cannot depend on any of them for an objective view of what happens,” Ebert wrote in his four-star review of the movie. “It is this elusive open-endedness that makes Kubrick’s film so strangely disturbing.”

Halloween

To the average person, John Carpenter’s “Halloween” is a horror movie about a man wearing the mold of a William Shatner mask targeting people on Halloween because he’s a creep. However, there’s more to this 1978 film than just a slasher for the sake of it.

Unlike other movies that try to give a motivation to the killer, Carpenter’s film treats Michael Myers (Nick Castle) simply as he is: evil personified. He kills because he can. That’s it — and that’s what makes it even scarier. There’s no reasoning with this man, as he torments Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) in this and across the continued “Halloween” story.

Roger Ebert showered “Halloween” with the highest praise, comparing it positively to Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.” In his perfect-score review, Ebert singled out Carpenter’s technical ability as key to the film’s fright factor, stating, “It’s easy to create violence on the screen, but it’s hard to do it well. Carpenter is uncannily skilled, for example, at the use of foregrounds in his compositions, and everyone who likes thrillers knows that foregrounds are crucial: The camera establishes the situation, and then it pans to one side, and something unexpectedly looms up in the foreground.”

The Descent

There are many horror films about home invasions, demonic possessions, and cannibal families, but not nearly enough about being trapped in a cave with murderous creatures. Thankfully, Neil Marshall’s “The Descent” exists.

The film follows a female group of adventurers who head into a cave for exploration. There’s one problem, though: Juno (Natalie Mendoza) tells the other ladies that they’re heading off to an area not on the map, nor that the authorities know about. It sounds like a shockingly bad idea, and it is, especially after they encounter a humanoid species feeling hungry for flesh and violence.

In his review of “The Descent,” Roger Ebert complimented the film for standing out from the horror pack in the 2000s. Movies such as “Final Destination” and “Saw” were full of gore, so the critic found Marshall’s film to be refreshing. “Finally, a scary movie with teeth, not just blood and entrails — a savage and gripping piece of work that jangles your nerves without leaving your brain hanging,” Ebert wrote. “And so, for a change, you emerge feeling energized and exhilarated rather than enervated, or merely queasy.”

Tragic Incident at Washington Paper Mill: Chemical Tank Implosion Claims One Life, Nine Missing

A tragic incident unfolded Tuesday at a Washington paper mill, where a tank filled with a corrosive chemical mixture burst and collapsed, resulting in one confirmed fatality and leaving nine individuals missing, as reported by local authorities.

The collapse at Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co. in Longview led to injuries for nine people, including a firefighter. The severity of injuries varied from minor wounds to critical conditions, according to officials.

Authorities announced that the operation has transitioned from a rescue mission to a recovery effort.

“Currently, we have no active rescues to conduct,” stated Cowlitz Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein during a press briefing.

The cause of the collapse remained under investigation.

Emergency crews responded Tuesday morning after a tank containing a chemical mixture known as “white liquor” ruptured at the facility. White liquor is a corrosive chemical mixture used in the paper-making process.

Officials initially estimated the tank contained about 80,000 gallons of the substance, but later revised the amount to roughly 900,000 gallons.

Authorities said approximately 90,000 gallons may still remain inside the damaged tank, which remains unstable and continues to complicate recovery efforts.

Several people suffered injuries ranging from minor to critical, including burns and inhalation injuries. One firefighter was among the injured.

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray addressed the community during the news conference.

“I know there’s a lot of questions about how all of this happened and I want to assure you that we will all continue to pressure to get answers to those questions,” Murray said. “This community deserves that.”

Officials said there was no direct threat to the surrounding community.

The incident comes days after roughly 50,000 California residents faced evacuation orders tied to a hazardous materials emergency at an aerospace facility in Orange County.

On Tuesday, officials lifted the final evacuation order for residents in Garden Grove living near a damaged chemical tank at GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems that had previously been at risk of exploding after a tank containing highly flammable methyl methacrylate (MMA) overheated and became compromised. Officials said the immediate risk of explosion, fire or leak had passed.
