Tragedy in Ohio: Fatal Plane Crash Claims Two Lives as Aircraft Plummets into Home

0

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has identified the aircraft involved in the tragic incident as a 1963 Piper Cherokee.

AKRON, Ohio — A devastating plane crash in Akron, Ohio, on Thursday afternoon has resulted in the deaths of two individuals.

The accident occurred around 3:45 p.m. within the Coventry Crossing residential area, situated in the southern sector of the city, which is home to approximately 190,000 residents.

Akron fire officials were alerted to the scene following reports of dense black smoke billowing from the area. Upon their arrival, responders were met with flames and smoke emanating from a residence. In response, two homes were evacuated, but fortunately, no residents suffered injuries.

Authorities have confirmed that the two deceased were located inside the aircraft, though their identities remain undisclosed at this time.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that the aircraft was a 1963 Piper Cherokee. The plane had departed from Akron Fulton Airport, located approximately four miles east of the crash site.

“The crash remains an active investigation, and troopers, local law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel continue to assess the scene. Residents are encouraged to avoid the area while emergency crews remain on site,” the OSHP added in a release.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board will be in charge of the investigation.

Akron Fire Department response

During a press conference at the scene, Akron Fire Department District Chief Sierjie Lash told reporters that officials first received a call that residents saw a plane going down into the house.

“We got more calls that people heard explosions and we arrived to heavy smoke coming out of the house and we addressed it, approached it as a house fire,” she explained.

The home suffered significant damage as a result of the plane crash. Lash explained that Akron fire investigators will work with the Ohio State Fire Marshal to determine the house’s structural integrity.

Lash added that the department was being “very protective” of all of the nearby residents, given the proximity of houses near the crash scene.

Neighbors tell 3News, a TV station based in Cleveland, they are coming together via the neighborhood’s social media group to help collect items and support the families affected by this tragedy.

A source told The Sun: ‘Nicola has met her soulmate in Mitch. She couldn’t be happier.’

Nicole flashed the sparkler while performing on stage alongside bandmates Cheryl, Nadine Coyle, and Kimberley Walsh.

Nicola’s last public relationship was with Charlie Fennell, who she dated for six years until the end of 2013, citing that the relationship had ‘fizzled out’.

Prior to this she was in a brief relationship with Carl Davies, who she suffered a campaign of online harassment from following the breakdown of the romance.

He was spared jail but handed a restraining order after being convicted of stalking Nicola. The harassment included threatening to stab and burn her, after setting up 35 fake social media accounts to send thousands of messages.

He targeted the pop-star over four years after their relationship broke down. Nicola never replied to any of the messages but meticulously copied every message which she then handed over to police.

He was later jailed for two years and eight months after he admitted sending death threats to former BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin and threatening to rape her daughter.

Uncovering the Edge: Yankees vs. Mets Subway Series Rivalry Reignites!

0

The first chapter of this year’s Subway Series is set to unfold under contrasting circumstances, as the New York Yankees and New York Mets prepare to face off. The Yankees, consistently among the American League’s elite, find themselves up against a Mets team struggling at the bottom of the standings—a scenario marked by high expectations but disappointing results.

However, when these crosstown rivals collide, past performances often take a backseat. The Yankees are currently navigating a challenging road trip, experiencing a slump that could be their toughest of the season. Meanwhile, the Mets have recently shown signs of life, achieving their first series sweep this past Thursday.

Fans at Citi Field will be eager to rally behind their team as the series kicks off on Friday night. The energy in the stadium promises to be electric, as supporters look for any glimmer of hope to cheer for.

At the plate

Getting on base

The struggles of the Mets’ offense have been noteworthy, particularly as they entered Thursday with the lowest on-base percentage in the league. Outside of Juan Soto, who has endured a difficult May and nearly suffered an injury scare on Wednesday after fouling a ball off his ankle, consistent on-base contributions have been scarce. The Mets are hopeful that rookies Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing can ignite their lineup, but so far, established players like Bo Bichette and Marcus Semien have struggled in this aspect. In contrast, the Yankees, though not prolific in hitting, have made up for it by drawing walks. Key players such as Ben Rice, Aaron Judge, and Cody Bellinger have maintained positions in the top 20 for much of the year, while Bichette, Semien, and Brett Baty have languished in the bottom 30. The Mets’ woes have been compounded by Francisco Lindor’s absence due to a strained calf, while the Yankees are dealing with Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s underperformance.

Oscar-Winning Folk Singer Buffy Sainte-Marie Loses Honorary Degree Amid Indigenous Ancestry Controversy

Buffy Sainte-Marie, a folk singer who has won an Oscar, has recently faced significant backlash over controversy surrounding her Native American heritage claims, resulting in the revocation of an honorary degree.

On Wednesday, the University of Toronto officially announced that it had rescinded Sainte-Marie’s honorary Doctor of Laws degree, originally awarded in 2019 in recognition of her contributions to music, the arts, and social advocacy.

A university representative mentioned that the decision followed a confidential review process, which concluded with the endorsement of the institution’s governing council.

This action follows two and a half years after an investigation by CBC’s “The Fifth Estate,” published in October 2023, questioned Sainte-Marie’s Indigenous identity claims.

The investigation presented a birth certificate indicating that Sainte-Marie was born in Massachusetts to Italian-American parents, contradicting long-standing biographies and media reports that identified her as Algonquin, Mi’kmaw, and later Cree.

Last year, Sainte-Marie told the Canadian Press she is an American citizen with a US passport who was adopted as a young adult by a Cree family in Saskatchewan.

Sainte-Marie became a major folk music star in the 1960s and frequently performed music tied to her claimed Cree heritage.

She later appeared on “Sesame Street” and won an Oscar in 1983 for co-writing “Up Where We Belong” from “An Officer and a Gentleman,” becoming the first Indigenous person to win the award.

Sainte-Marie announced her retirement from live performances in August 2023, citing health concerns and physical challenges related to touring.

The University of Toronto said only two honorary degrees have been revoked since the school created its recognition review committee in 2023. The other belonged to Duncan Campbell Scott.

Columbia University professor Audra Simpson, who is Kanien’kehá:ka from Kahnawà:ke, called the decision overdue.

“A just consequence for both him and for her, who have both acted on the imperatives of settler colonialism in different ways and in different time periods,” Simpson told CBC.

“I hope it sends a message.”

Toronto’s move comes just months after Dalhousie University stripped Sainte-Marie of another honorary degree in January following questions raised by a Mi’kmaw student.

Sainte-Marie has received about 15 honorary doctorates over the years from schools including the University of British Columbia, the University of Regina and Carleton University — putting more of her academic honors under renewed scrutiny.

After the CBC investigation aired in 2023, Sainte-Marie blasted the allegations she faked her Native American ancestry, calling the report “traumatizing and unfair.”

“This has been incredibly re-traumatizing for me and unfair to all involved,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

“The attack on my character is full of mistakes and omissions,” she said.

Sainte-Marie also accused her estranged brother Alan — whose claims were featured in the investigation — of sexually abusing her.

“It hurts me deeply to discover that my estranged family grew up scared of me and thinking these lies because of a letter I sent intended to protect me from further abuse from my brother,” she said.

Jesy Nelson Celebrates Twins’ First Birthday with Heartfelt Video Tribute

Jesy Nelson has celebrated the first birthday of her twin daughters with a heartfelt video highlighting their journey and health challenges.

Earlier this year, in January, Nelson’s daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, were diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy type 1 (SMA1), a genetic condition that leads to progressive muscle weakness. This diagnosis means the girls may never walk or develop neck strength.

On Friday, Nelson shared an emotional montage on Instagram, featuring videos and photos of her daughters. The collection included glimpses of their extravagant first birthday celebration, visits to Great Ormond Street Hospital, and significant moments in their young lives.

In a voiceover accompanying the montage, Nelson reflected, “I’m often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability, to help those who haven’t experienced it understand and imagine what it feels like.”

She further expressed her feelings by reciting “Welcome to Holland,” a poignant 1987 poem by American author Emily Perl Kingsley. Kingsley, who has a child with Down’s syndrome, captures the essence of life with a child with a disability in her writing.

Jesy’s video featured a series of moments throughout the twins’ first year, including their various health battles, milestones and treatments. She shared her daughters with ex-boyfriend Zion Foster.

She added a caption reading: ‘I cannot believe it has been a whole year since having my beautiful baby girls. They have been through so much…

‘There will never be enough words to describe just how incredible they actually are. My tiny little super humans. The strongest, most resilient little fighters I’ve ever known. You inspire me and every single person that ever meets you both….

‘One whole year old today what a milestone to reach . I read this poem a little while ago by Emily Perl Kingsley “welcome to Holland” and I think this sums up their journey so beautifully…

‘Happy Birthday my Ocean and Story you are my whole heart and soul I love you more than you will ever know’.

Since announcing her daughters’ diagnosis, Jesy has campaigned tirelessly for the NHS to expand its screening at birth to check for spinal muscular atrophy following her own experience with her daughters.

Despite the UK’s National Screening Committee rejecting calls to introduce checks for another muscular disease in January, last month Wes Streeting announced plans for more than 400,000 babies to be screened for the condition from October 2026.

Jesy has been liaising with the politician and marked another chapter in her fight for the cause with her visit to the Prime Minister’s residence, where she snapped selfies and wrote the poignant caption: ‘When life throws you lemons……

While she has proudly professed that her fight has come on leaps and bounds, earlier this month Jesy told fans there is a long way to go as only certain areas in England will be carrying out the tests on newborns.

‘It is a bit bittersweet because basically they are only doing it in certain areas of England, so if you do not live in that certain postcode or part of England then your baby won’t be tested for SMA, which is really sad’, she explained.

‘It’s essentially a postcode lottery for your baby which shouldn’t be the case. All babies lives matter, so as amazing as it is there is still a long way to go in terms of that.

‘I’m going to keep pushing and trying as much as possible to get this so it is in all areas of England and then also the petition you all kindly signed getting 100,000 signatures is now going to be debated in parliament which is just amazing.

‘That is all down to you guys so thank you so so much, you’re incredible and I am so appreciative of all the support and love, thank you so much.’

What is spinal muscular atrophy?

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a disease that weakens a patient’s strength by affecting the motor neuron cells in the spinal cord.

It results in gradual muscle wasting and the severity of symptoms varies by type.

Type 1 SMA is the most severe and is evident at birth. The weakening of muscles means sufferers cannot sit and usually leads to death by the age of five.

Type 2 is intermediate with the sufferer being unable to stand.

Type 3 is mild and makes it difficult to get up from a sitting position.

Type 4 sufferers don’t have symptoms until they are in their 20s or 30s.

Flavour’s Viral Tweet: The Perils of Affairs with Married Women You Can’t Ignore!

  • Flavour of Africa’s alleged tweet warning against affairs with married women has triggered widespread reactions online amid the ongoing Chike-related controversy.
  • Social media users are divided, sharing mixed opinions on relationships, morality, and celebrity behavior.

An intriguing post linked to the musician Flavour has ignited a flurry of online discussions, as it resonates with the ongoing debates about relationships with married women, especially in the context of the Chike-related social media uproar.

Flavour of Africa’s message, which has been making rounds on X (formerly known as Twitter), reads:

“Agu! Pray against oringo that leads you to contemplate another man’s wife. If you reach that stage, your life is in trouble.”

This statement rapidly captured the internet’s attention, as many tied it to the current online conversations about singer Chike and his alleged entanglements with married women.

The post’s comment section became a battlefield of opinions, with netizens engaging in spirited debates over issues of morality, relationships, and how these situations are perceived by the public.

One user wrote:
“But mk we truly check Am, As single women many reach. Chike of all ppl say nah anoda man wife dey sweet am. Something is wrong ajeh.”

Another user added:
“Coz Dem never table him matter, make we still dey observe like nothing has ever happened. Until then🥂”

“Funny how these warnings only trend after the scandal breaks.”

Another user wrote:
“But how person go even open eye, carry another man wife go lash… Beautiful girls don finish life”

A separate reaction compared the situation to other industry controversies:

Revelations About Shrek That Will Tug at the Heartstrings of Any Ogre Enthusiast

“I remember a screening where our scores were exceptionally high,” Adamson reminisced. “Jeffrey turned to me and said, ‘Prepare yourself. This might be a once-in-a-lifetime event.'”

That “once-in-a-lifetime event” blossomed into a $3.5 billion franchise, featuring a star-studded cast and 95 minutes of side-splitting humor, often at Disney’s expense. Upon its release on May 18, 2001, it raked in $484.4 million at the box office. To celebrate its milestone anniversary, Shrek is set to be re-released in theaters starting May 15.

The franchise’s storybook ending also includes an Oscar win, two holiday specials, a spin-off, a Broadway adaptation, and four sequels. Shrek 5, featuring the addition of Zendaya to the impressive cast, is slated for a June 2027 release. And let’s not forget the flood of merchandise that has swamped the market since the original film’s debut.

And who could overlook that catchy cover song by Smash Mouth?

However, Shrek‘s journey to success began in a less-than-fairytale fashion, when Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to the book in 1991.

To properly recognize a movie the Library of Congress deemed worthy of preservation in the National Film Registry, we must start at the beginning.

Once upon a time, there was a picture book, a legendary director, a former Disney CEO and their brand new animation studio…

Royal Culinary Delight: Italian Chef Applauds Princess Kate’s Exceptional Pasta-Making Talent

0

The Duchess of Sussex once sparked controversy among Italians with her spaghetti recipe featured on her Netflix lifestyle show, but this week, the Princess of Wales garnered admiration for her pasta-making skills.

During her two-day international visit, 44-year-old Kate was lauded as a ‘natural Rezdora,’ a term used locally for a skilled matriarch or homemaker, as she expertly crafted fresh dough by hand.

She impressed chef Ivan Lampredi by combining flour, oil, salt, and water to prepare tortelli, a type of stuffed pasta.

Chef Lampredi was so taken with her skills that he remarked he would gladly ‘hire’ her. “I’ve taught many people this technique, and she excelled,” he enthused.

“She picked it up swiftly and was remarkably easy to converse with, just like one of us. Hosting the princess in my kitchen was a tremendous honor. It’s hard to believe, and it carried a great sense of responsibility,” he added.

The future Queen also shared insights into cooking at Forest Lodge, revealing that she makes her own pasta at home.

‘When I do this at home it’s without a big bowl and it goes everywhere,’ Kate admitted, later laughing when she rolled her pasta through the machine and the handle fell off by accident. ‘Is there a technique for this?’ she asked.

It’s a far cry from the Italian reception to the Duchess’ pasta-making endeavours in her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan.

Fans expressed their horror over the dish she whipped up with her close friend, make-up artist Daniel Martin.

‘When I make this, I make it for my family,’ Meghan explained, before clarifying ‘not that my children are eating heaps of noodles but I will make enough so that I can put leftovers in their lunchbox’.

Describing how the cherished dish harks back to her days of creating lifestyle content for her previous website The Tig, she said: ‘This skillet spaghetti would have been on there’.

To make the meal, Meghan removed the dry pasta from a jar and laid it into the dish, which had feta and cherry tomatoes already in a layer on the bottom.

There was scant detail on measurements, except to say ‘an entire pack of spaghetti’ is used – and ‘three and a half cups of boiling water, give or take’ should be added.

After adding lots of lemon zest, she told viewers: ‘You just pour boiling water on top and that’s it’. When the cooking is almost done, chard and kale are added.

Meghan said she left it for ‘four or five minutes until the noodle is done, al dente…’

However, while the final result looked tasty, many appeared baffled by the cooking methods.

‘Netflix paid a lot of money just to let us know Meghan Markle doesn’t know how to cook pasta,’ one person wrote on X.

‘Next she’ll show us how to make frozen pizza!’ another joked.

Another lamented: ‘She overcooked the noodles. Slimy looking.’

‘Wtf is that? It looks like she made some sort of soup, cooked the vegetables to hell, tossed in some spaghetti and called it a day,’ a user commented.

‘The pasta looks fine in the end, but I think Italians screamed at their TVs when she poured water into the sauce,’ someone else observed.

Others, however, came to the Duchess’ defense.

‘It looked delicious to me,’ one person wrote.

In another moment that likely annoyed an entire European nation, the Duchess called the popular Italian pasta ‘noodles’ more than once while prepping the meal.

Criminal Profiler Identifies Uncommon Warning Sign in Texas Case Involving Suspected Serial Killer Migrant

0

A leading criminal profiler has issued a stark warning about a potential serial killer emerging in Texas sooner than previously anticipated, with concerns mounting over a possible larger number of victims. This apprehension arises from a notable six-year interval between the alleged murders.

The accused, Luis Benitez-Gonzalez, a 26-year-old who had been deported from the U.S. before, faces charges of strangling two women in Austin, Texas, with incidents reported in 2018 and again in 2024.

His arrest was announced by police earlier this week, following two more attempted shootings in 2025 that left the women injured but alive. One of them bravely retaliated, reportedly managing to take the attacker’s cellphone, shedding new light on the investigation.

A split image showing Benito-Gonzalez's mugshot and a photo of his arrest

Benitez-Gonzalez, charged with two killings and implicated in shooting two other survivors, is identified as an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, who was voluntarily deported in 2020. Authorities in Austin suspect there could be additional victims connected to this case.

We usually never find out who the first victims really were. I just wonder how many this guy has killed with his homicidal anger towards women over the years?

“The rub for me…is that he is accused of killing Alba Jenisse Aviles-Marti when he was only about 18 years old,” said John Kelly, a criminal profiler who had been following the case since before Austin police and the U.S. Marshals announced an arrest. “We worked hard looking for this guy, because we believed there was a serial killer in this area. Little did we expect a budding serial killer who allegedly started killing at 18.”

Historically, most serial killers are older when they evolve into murderers, he said.

“This is extremely rare, as serial killers usually start killing between 23 to 35 years old,” the STALK Inc. founder told Fox News Digital. “We usually never find out who the first victims really were. I just wonder how many this guy has killed with his homicidal anger towards women over the years?”

Investigators working the case are asking the same question.

“We believe that there is a strong likelihood that Benitez is responsible for further acts of extreme violence,” said Chris Anderson, a homicide detective with the Austin Police Department.

He said police are already looking into more cases for potential connections.

The suspected is handcuffed in this image from Luis Benitez-Gonzalez's arrest in Dallas by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force

He is urging anyone with additional information on Benitez-Gonzalez to contact the Austin Police Homicide unit at 512-974-8477 or Capital Area Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477.

The suspect, an illegal immigrant from Mexico who voluntarily self-deported in 2020 before reentering the country at an unknown time, is believed to have ties to Austin, Houston, Dallas and Hidalgo County.

WATCH: Texas authorities say illegal migrant charged in 2 murders, 2 shootings and more victims possible

Authorities announced charges against him Tuesday in connection with the murders of Aviles-Marti and Alyssa Ann Rivera, whose remains were found just three miles away in 2024.

Anderson said that it’s suspicious that there’s a six-year gap between the slayings and that evidence shows an alleged “repeated pattern of violence conducted against vulnerable female victims.”

“He has a 2018 case, and he has a 2024 case,” Anderson said. “People who commit crimes of this nature, with the very distinct MO, they usually don’t take a break.

Benitez-Gonzalez is also accused of shooting two more women in Austin in November and December 2025. Both of them survived, which helped authorities catch Benitez-Gonzalez.

He allegedly claimed self-defense in all four cases, but authorities said they don’t believe him. He has not yet entered a plea.

Delta Goodrem Leads Australia to Eurovision Glory: Secures Spot in Grand Final

0

Delta Goodrem has propelled Australia into the Eurovision finals, marking the country’s return after a three-year hiatus.

The renowned Australian singer and songwriter captivated the audience with her stunning rendition of “Eclipse” in the semi-finals at the Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna, Austria, on Friday morning.

Australia’s entry to the finals was secured through a popular vote, with the grand event set to unfold on Saturday night local time (Sunday morning AEST).

Alongside Australia, countries including Bulgaria, Ukraine, Norway, Romania, Malta, Cyprus, Albania, Denmark, and Czechia have also advanced to the finals.

These second-round qualifiers will join the first-round winners—Greece, Finland, Belgium, Sweden, Moldova, Israel, Serbia, Croatia, Lithuania, and Poland—in the final showdown.

Australia was admitted to Eurovision 11 years ago on a wild card entry in 2015.

There have been 95,000 tickets sold for this year’s event to fans from 75 countries and territories, and the European Broadcasting Union expects it will be the largest live audience in years.

Goodrem spoke to SBS News’ chief international correspondent Ben Lewis on Thursday ahead of her performance, telling him that she was “excited” to take her song to the Austrian stage and that Eurovision is a world of its own.

“It’s really special, it’s a really incredible way to step into the music where people can get to know the songs and support the songs … It’s really amazing to learn all the different aspects of this,” Goodrem said.

The singer’s pop power ballad is an original track written by Goodrem in collaboration with Grammy-winning Swedish songwriter Jonas Myrin and Los Angeles-based songwriter Ferras Alqaisi.

Performing on a raised platform, Goodrem joked that the stage theatrics took her “a bit higher than I realised”.

She added that she felt her fellow Australian icon and Eurovision predecessor, Olivia Newton-John, would be “watching over” the proceedings.

On the idea that she might deliver Australia its first-ever Eurovision victory, Goodrem argued the country would make an “amazing” host and that Europeans would simply have to get up at 4am — as Australians are accustomed to doing each year.

The winner of Eurovision’s country of origin will traditionally host the event the following year.

Last year, some 2.2 million Australians tuned into the singing competition.

How to watch Eurovision in Australia

The second semi-final will be broadcast in Australia at 5am AEST on Friday 15 May.

SBS will also broadcast the grand final live at 5am AEST on Sunday 17 May, with the SBS News online team covering all the action in a live blog.

For those who want a sleep-in — or to relive the excitement — SBS will air prime-time ‘access all areas’ broadcasts from 15–17 May at 7.30pm AEST.

You can watch the broadcasts live on SBS and SBS On Demand.
