Couple’s Extravagant Lifestyle Exposed Amid Husband’s $1 Billion Fraud Scandal

0

The CEO of a healthcare software firm has been convicted of orchestrating a scheme that defrauded taxpayers of nearly $1 billion, all while showcasing his and his spouse’s opulent lifestyle on social media.

On Wednesday, 42-year-old Brett Blackman was found guilty of fraud after he and his associates tricked Medicare patients into accepting fake prescriptions and unnecessary medical services between 2015 and 2020.

Blackman, owner and CEO of HealthSplash, along with his co-conspirators, aggressively targeted vast numbers of Medicare beneficiaries, persuading them to obtain medically unnecessary items such as orthotic braces, according to the Department of Justice.

The DOJ described the operation as a “cold, calculated, industrial-scale theft” that exploited over one billion dollars from American taxpayers, by coercing the sick and elderly into purchasing needless medical equipment.

Hailing from Kansas, Blackman utilized Power Mobility Doctor Rx, LLC—a firm acquired by HealthSplash in 2017—to fabricate fraudulent doctor’s orders for durable medical equipment and prescriptions.

Blackman was accused of orchestrating a ‘massive telemarketing scheme’ that utilized foreign call centers and spam mailers to target senior citizens and defraud the government health care benefits programs, according to Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald of the Justice Department’s National Fraud Enforcement Division.

‘The beneficiaries were targeted to provide their personally identifiable information and accept braces, pain creams, and other items through misleading mailers, television advertisements, and calls from offshore call centers,’ the indictment obtained by the Daily Mail said.

The scheme, described by the DOJ as one of the most ‘egregious fraud schemes in Florida history,’ saw doctors paid to sign orders and prescriptions ‘without any meaningful interaction’ or no interaction with the patient.

‘Doctors signed these orders and prescriptions without regard to whether the equipment was medically necessary,’ the release stated, adding that, in certain cases, the doctor would falsely claim to have performed in-person exams on the patient.

Blackman and his co-conspirators were accused of connecting pharmacies, DME suppliers and marketers with telemedicine companies that would accept illegal kickbacks and bribes ‘in exchange for signed doctors’ orders and took a cut for themselves in exchange for the referrals.

‘The DME suppliers and pharmacies that were paying illegal kickbacks for these orders billed Medicare and other insurers for more than $1 billion,’ the DOJ continued.

‘Medicare and the other insurers paid more than $450 million based on these claims. According to evidence presented at trial, Blackman and his co-conspirators concealed the scheme through sham contracts and by manipulating the doctors’ orders to avoid Medicare audits.’

‘Fraud of this magnitude drains vital resources and jeopardizes the care promised to our service members, retirees and their families,’ Special Agent in Charge Jason Sargenski of the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General’s Defense Criminal Investigative Service said.

Blackman was convicted of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud, conspiracy to pay and receive health care kickbacks and conspiracy to defraud the United States and to make false statement in connection with health care matters.

His co-conspirator, 79-year-old Gary Cox, was convicted in an earlier trial and sentenced to 15 years behind bars. Blackman on the other hand faces at least 20 years in prison.

Cox was convicted of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud, three counts of health care fraud, conspiracy to pay and receive health care kickbacks, and conspiracy to defraud the United States and make false statements in connection with health care matters, according to the DOJ.

Blackman is set to be sentenced on August 26, 2026, at 10am, according to online records.

The Daily Mail reached out to the National Fraud Enforcement Division, the Office of the Attorney General, Blackman’s Defense Attorney Jenny Wilson and attempted to reach Blackman’s ex-wife for comment.

How Australia’s Housing Tax Changes Could Impact You

0

In brief

  • New policies on capital gains tax and negative gearing are intended to reduce intergenerational inequality.
  • But some young Australians could face unintended flow-on effects as they try to build wealth in this new environment, according to some analysts.

The government has unveiled significant changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax in its latest federal budget, aiming to enhance housing affordability and create fairer opportunities for younger generations. These adjustments are seen as a step towards balancing the scales in the housing market.

However, the proposed reforms have sparked concerns among economists, property experts, and aspiring homeowners. There is apprehension that these measures might inadvertently hinder Australians striving to accumulate wealth and secure a foothold in the property landscape.

In response to the challenging housing market, many young Australians are adopting unconventional strategies to achieve homeownership. This includes purchasing properties in different states with no intention of residing in them, investing in diverse assets while renting, or opting to live with family to save for a deposit.

Opinions are divided on the potential impact of these reforms. Some anticipate a positive outcome, expecting a reduction in property prices and investor activity. On the other hand, there are fears that these changes might complicate the already difficult journey to homeownership for many.

Under previous regulations, investors could reduce their taxable income by offsetting losses from rental properties. The new reforms remove this advantage for buyers of pre-existing homes but will maintain it for those investing in newly constructed properties, potentially reshaping investment strategies in the housing market.

The changes to negative gearing will be grandfathered, meaning those who bought before budget night will retain the tax benefit.

Capital gains tax will also change from July next year, with the current 50 per cent discount to be replaced by an inflation-indexed system.

It will be partially grandfathered, allowing existing investors to retain the current tax treatment for gains accrued before the new rules kick in.

The change applies to all assets — not just property.

These are some of the groups experts say could be caught in the middle.

Young investors

At 26, Alexander Clisdell has been working hard to set himself up for the future, living with family while putting aside money to save and invest.

He had already invested in shares and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and last year began the process of buying an investment property.

After securing pre-approval through a mortgage broker, he planned to attend an auction for a Sydney property next weekend.

But he said the negative gearing reforms announced on Tuesday will dramatically reduce his borrowing power. After speaking with his broker, he realised the property was no longer within reach.

Negative gearing can improve an investor’s cash flow position by using losses on an investment property to reduce their taxable income — something that brokers say can also affect borrowing calculations.

“I did all the right things to get myself in a position where I could purchase an investment like that, and then, out of no fault of my own, it feels like the system’s almost just taking that away from you,” he told SBS News.

“That dream of purchasing an investment property to … set up my family in Sydney, in New South Wales, it’s probably not going to happen anymore.”

He’s now taking a step back and considering more affordable options interstate.

As for his share portfolio, he says the game has “kind of completely changed” due to the elimination of the capital gains tax discount.

“That older generation, they had the benefits of capital gains benefits, negative gearing, and that’s what they used in terms of their benefit to build their wealth,” he said.

“What our wealth building looks like in the future? Who knows.”

Rentvestors

Rentvesting is a name given to people who choose to rent while buying property in more affordable markets in order to get on the property ladder.

Nicola Powell, Domain’s head of research and economics, said rentvesting was born out of the high cost in major capital cities for young people trying to build a path to home ownership.

“We’ve seen the younger generation take different paths in order to build wealth and to get into the housing market,” Powell told SBS News.

For rentvestors and others who have sought to build wealth through assets like shares, the tax reforms have changed the outlook.

“Ultimately, it is going to be harder for them to do that now,” Powell said.

She said the reforms could reduce cash flow for rentvestors, tighten borrowing capacity and make property and share investing a less tax-effective pathway for Australians trying to save for a home deposit.

Tim Lawless, the executive research director of Cotality’s Asia-Pacific divison, said rentvesting remains a relatively niche strategy, with recent lending data showing only 5.6 per cent of first-time buyers were purchasing as investors.

The ‘paradox’ for renters

Powell said the reforms could reduce competition from investors for established homes and make it easier for some first home buyers to enter the market.

However, she warned this could also shrink rental supply over time, as investors pull back from existing properties, tightening rental vacancy rates and pushing up rents in already undersupplied areas.

“I actually think the paradox here is that renters trying to save a deposit are going to be challenged under the impact of higher rents,” she said.

Budget modelling suggests the tax changes will slow house price growth by about 2 per cent annually, while lifting median rents by just $2 a week.

But Powell suspects it’s going to have a bigger impact.

She pointed to New Zealand as a case study.

New Zealand introduced reforms in 2021 that significantly reduced tax deductions for residential property investors. The policy was reversed after a change of government, which argued the move had significantly pushed up rental prices. Data from realestate.co.nz shows national rent prices increased over $NZ100 ($81) between 2021 and 2024, then started to decline slightly.

“I think that there are lessons to be learned from not far away that can tell us that the impact on rents is going to be vast,” Powell said.

However, Lawless, told SBS News he’s “not convinced rents are going to suddenly accelerate”.

Nate Pedrotti, 29, is renting with his fiancée in Melbourne while they save for a home.

While he believes rent rises are a possibility, he’s encouraged by the steps the government has taken in the budget.

“It just evens the playing field a little bit between people like myself who are trying to break into the market, and people who are maybe buying their third, fourth, fifth house,” he told SBS News.

He hopes state governments “step up and take some responsibility” when it comes to stabilising rents, capping how much landlords can hike prices.

Possible ‘friction point’ for first-home buyers

With negative gearing benefits remaining for new builds, Lawless says this could funnel investors into those markets.

“If you look at some of the areas where first home buyers tend to be quite active, and it’s generally around out of fringes, particularly detached homes offering new house and land packages,” he said.

“So while the budgetary changes were very much designed to try and reduce competition for first home buyers, that could be one friction point where we do see some competitive tensions between investors first home buyers.”

Maninder Sidhu, a director at First Home Buyers Australia, said he’s received a “mixed reaction” from clients about the new policies.

Some are worried about reduced rental supply and rising rents hampering their ability to save a deposit, while others are optimistic the move will free up supply.

Sidhu told SBS News he was concerned increased demand for newly built homes could drive up prices in those markets and place pressure on properties at the more affordable end of the market, potentially pushing some first home buyers beyond the thresholds for government grants and incentives.

But he believes the changes will reduce competition for established homes, helping to level the playing field for aspiring first home buyers.

Campus Safety Concerns Rise at Leading Party College Following Reported Sexual Assault and Strangulation

0

Students at the University of California, Santa Barbara, known for its vibrant social scene and ranked as the nation’s top party school, are feeling uneasy following a serious incident reported on campus over the weekend involving both rape and strangulation.

On Saturday night at 10 p.m., authorities circulated a campus-wide alert to inform students, faculty, and staff members about the concerning event.

The UCSB Police Department’s daily log reveals that the incident took place within the university’s residential area.

The student newspaper, The Daily Nexus, has detailed that the alleged perpetrator and the victim had only met earlier at a party in the nearby Isla Vista area, having no prior acquaintance before the reported attack.

UCSB Police have not yet released any suspect information or further detail into the incident.

UC Santa Barbara has been ranked as the top party school in the U.S. for the last two years, according to Niche Best Colleges.

Over the last few years, the school has also seen an increase in crimes like sexual assault, weapons arrests and burglaries, among others on campus.

US Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks Announces Resignation Amid Department of Homeland Security Leadership Transition

0

WASHINGTON — The chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, which plays a crucial role in guarding the nation’s borders and has been increasingly involved in domestic immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, announced his resignation on Thursday.

Michael Banks revealed his decision during an interview with Fox News, with the Department of Homeland Security later confirming the news. His departure marks another change in the leadership team responsible for executing President Donald Trump’s stringent immigration policies, happening at a time when the administration seems to be adjusting its strategies.

“It’s just time,” Banks expressed in a Fox News article. “I believe I’ve steered the ship from being the least secure, chaotic border to becoming the most secure border this country has ever witnessed,” he stated.

Rodney Scott, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection commissioner, extended his gratitude to Banks for his contributions, acknowledging his efforts during one of the most challenging eras for border security.

The White House has not yet provided a comment regarding the resignation.

It was not immediately clear who will replace Banks. He led an agency at the forefront of Trump’s high-profile immigration enforcement efforts but kept a lower profile than some other officials such as Gregory Bovino, a now-retired commander who became a public face of the city operations.

CBP is one of the federal agencies that participated since last year in a series of immigration enforcement operations, carried out primarily in cities governed by Democrats -an effort that triggered a spike in arrests and led to the fatal shooting of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis this year at the hands of federal immigration officers.

Banks’ resignation takes place two months after Markwayne Mullin, a former Republican senator from Oklahoma, became homeland security secretary. DHS oversees CBP and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE.

Banks is stepping down at the same time that ICE is also going through a leadership transition. Todd Lyons, the acting ICE director, is leaving later this month and will be replaced by David Venturella, who worked for years for private contractors before returning to government service.

CBP was established in 2003 and handles customs, immigration, and agricultural regulations to secure U.S. borders.

Banks returned to the Border Patrol last year after a long agency career that had never landed him in its senior ranks. His star had risen as border czar to Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, during a period when illegal crossings reached record highs and the state launched a multibillion-dollar enforcement surge that led to turf battles with the Biden administration.

Banks kept a relatively low public profile as arrests for illegal crossings that have plunged to their lowest levels since the mid-1960s, a trend that began toward the end of that Democratic administration.

Banks did not appear publicly at the Border Security Expo this month in Phoenix, an annual conference at which government officials update contractors on the state of the border. Scott, who was Banks’ supervisor, is a close ally of Trump border czar Tom Homan and has acted more as the agency’s public face.

In the interview with Fox News, Banks said that after 37 years, “it’s time to enjoy the family and life.”

Revolutionary ASSIMILATION Act: GOP’s Bold Move to Overhaul America’s Immigration System

0

Representative Andy Ogles from Tennessee has unveiled a new legislative initiative known as the ASSIMILATION Act. Announced on Thursday via the social media platform X, the bill is designed to address perceived shortcomings in the immigration system, with a particular focus on encouraging newcomers to integrate into American society.

Ogles articulated the act’s primary objective: to halt what he describes as “replacement migration” and to foster a unified American cultural identity.

Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, collaborating with Ogles, has introduced a similar bill in the Senate. Speaking to Fox News on Wednesday, Tuberville emphasized that those who do not intend to embrace American culture should reconsider their presence in the country.

Excited to announce that my 83-page ASSIMILATION Act has been introduced.

Months of labor were undertaken by my staff, @SenTuberville and myself in order to GUT the Hart-Celler Act of 1965, as well as scrap provisions of the Immigration Act of the 1990s.

The goal of this bill is simple: end replacement migration and ensure American cultural cohesion.

This bill will end the H-1B scam, ensure migrants NEVER become a public charge, and make America look like America again. FYI, net immigration immediately decreases by 85% under this bill.

Some other things it does:

• National Interest Standard
• Stringent Character Tests
• Mandatory E-Verify
• Ends Chain Migration
• Ends Diversity Lottery
• GUTS Birthright Citizenship
• WAY Tougher Asylum Standards
• Stronger Public Charge Rules
• 10 Year Citizenship Requirement
• English & American Civics PROFICIENCY

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), who has been working with Ogles and introduced companion legislation in the Senate, told Fox News on Wednesday that if you’re not planning on becoming part of our culture, you don’t belong here:

Tuberville also posted a long statement on his official website. Although critics will almost certainly call this effort racist, Tuberville argues that it has nothing to do with that:

For most of our history, people have come here to become Americans. They came here to assimilate. They worked hard. They learned. They followed the law, and they contributed. That’s what this country is all about. Today, we’re seeing large numbers, and I mean large numbers, of people coming into this country with no intentions of assimilating into our culture or our way of life. People from third world hellholes are being let into this country who have no desire to adapt to our way of life. They not only refuse to work, but they also choose to take advantage of Americans welfare system, forcing hardworking Americans to bank roll their lives. The question must be asked: why are we letting these people who don’t share values and refuse to assimilate? Why are we letting them in our country? The word assimilate is often treated with suspicion because it is often related to racism. But assimilation has absolutely nothing to do with race.

It’s a hard-hitting bill, and I think it’s safe to say that Democrats will term it “white nationalist,” “hateful,” “racist,” and whatever other similar words their thesauruses come up with. They should be looking in the mirror, though, as they cheered on former President Joe Biden as he oversaw some of the most ineffective and dangerous immigration policies our country has ever seen.

The bills would have to pass through committees before either body could take a full vote, and then the versions would have to be reconciled before a final measure could be sent to the president.

Editor’s Note: Thanks to President Trump, illegal immigration into our great country has virtually stopped. Despite the radical left’s lies, new legislation wasn’t needed to secure our border, just a new president.

Pre-Trial Diversion Gone Wrong: Man Faces New Charges After Allegedly Hitting Pedestrian and Staging Car Theft

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Authorities apprehended 22-year-old Meleek Alexander Stevens yesterday, charging him with fleeing the scene of an accident that resulted in significant injury, filing a false claim of vehicle theft, and operating a vehicle with a suspended license, which led to serious harm.

At approximately 6:09 p.m. on February 9, officers from the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) and emergency responders arrived at a scene on SE Williston Road where a pedestrian had sustained critical injuries while crossing against the pedestrian signal. The driver involved had left the location, but an eyewitness reported observing an older-model gray Nissan Altima striking the pedestrian, pausing briefly, and then driving away.

The victim endured multiple severe injuries, including a brain hemorrhage, fractures to the face and skull, a lacerated liver, breaks in the spine and pelvis, a fractured leg and shoulder, and trauma to the lungs.

According to the eyewitness, the victim was crossing Williston Road at the southernmost crosswalk within the 400 block, disregarding the pedestrian signal, when she was struck in the curb lane. The impact caused her to be thrown into the air before landing on the pavement. The witness reported that the gray Nissan stopped momentarily, during which a female voice was heard saying, “I think you just hit somebody,” before the vehicle proceeded northward.

Gray paint chips were collected at the scene, along with a vehicle part that came from a Nissan vehicle.

On February 11, a witness called law enforcement to report a “very damaged vehicle” with no license plate that was parked at a vacant residence near his home; he said he believed someone was trying to “hide” the vehicle. The witness lived about seven blocks from the crash.

An officer responded to the address and found a gray Nissan Altima with a damaged front end, hood, and windshield; the vehicle was registered to Stevens and had been reported stolen about 2.5 hours after the crash.

Stevens allegedly reported the Altima stolen at about 8:45 p.m. on the day of the crash and said he noticed it was missing when he came home from work. He reportedly told the officer that he had removed the license plate in January, when he learned that his license was suspended.

In a phone interview on February 16, Stevens reportedly said he had stopped paying his automobile insurance in December, and he was stopped by a law enforcement officer on January 22, which is when he found out his license had been suspended. He said he parked the Altima at his home and had not driven it since that date. He also reportedly admitted to the officer that he had not been at work when the car was stolen and instead had been “hanging” with his cousin.

GPD reported that traffic cameras showed the Altima being driven around southwest Gainesville between January 23 and February 8, and surveillance video from Stevens’s workplace also reportedly showed the vehicle parked at the business (with the license plate attached) on multiple dates during that period; the video from his workplace also reportedly shows Stevens getting out of the driver’s seat and walking into work.

A search warrant was executed on the Altima on February 17, and the paint chips found at the scene of the crash were found to be a match to the Altima.

Officers reviewed surveillance video from various sources that enabled them to construct a timeline: video from an RTS bus shows the Altima turning east from South Main Street at 6:08 p.m., and then both vehicles turn onto Williston Road, where the Altima picks up speed and hits the victim just before the bus arrives at the scene of the crash.

Surveillance video from two nearby gas stations reportedly shows the Altima hitting the pedestrian and then stopping for about 25 seconds before fleeing at a high rate of speed.

A search warrant for Stevens’s cell phone records reportedly produced evidence of his phone leaving his home at Lexington Crossing Apartments at 5:54 p.m. and moving in the direction of the crash; at 6:10 p.m., his phone was in the area of the crash. At about 7:05 p.m., his phone moved toward his home, and he arrived home at 7:11 p.m. He also reportedly called a friend four minutes after the crash and then called him again, about seven minutes later.

At about 6:36 p.m., a vehicle registered to the friend was captured by traffic cameras about 400 feet from the crash site, and Stevens’s cell phone was reportedly in the same locations as the friend’s vehicle for the next hour. Officers believe that Stevens called the friend to pick him up after the crash.

On May 13, Stevens was interviewed at GPD Headquarters, and post Miranda, he reportedly admitted to driving his vehicle at the time of the crash; he said he saw the pedestrian on the ground and fled because he was scared to go to jail. He said he parked the vehicle a short distance away, and he reportedly admitted to making a false police report that the vehicle was stolen because he was scared.

Stevens has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving serious personal injury, making a false report that his vehicle was stolen, and driving with a suspended license, resulting in serious injury. He has a juvenile conviction from 2022, and last July, he entered into a pre-trial diversion agreement after he was arrested for domestic battery; the agreement deferred prosecution of the charge for 12 months if he complied with a list of conditions that includes refraining from breaking the law.

Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $225,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Unveiling the Titan: Southeast Asia’s Largest Dinosaur Unearthed in Thailand

0

In a sun-drenched and arid landscape that today is part of Thailand, a colossal herbivore roamed along a winding river approximately 113 million years ago. With a length approaching 90 feet (27 meters), this giant fed on the treetops, its enormous size rendering it nearly invincible to predators.

Identified as Nagatitan chaiyaphumensis, it holds the title of the largest-known dinosaur discovered in Southeast Asia.

Scientists have uncovered the skeletal remains of Nagatitan, a member of the sauropods—a group of dinosaurs distinguished by their elongated necks and tails, diminutive heads, and sturdy, pillar-like legs.

The remains of this dinosaur from the Cretaceous Period were initially found by a local resident in Thailand’s northeastern Chaiyaphum province.

Over time, researchers meticulously excavated bones from its spine, ribs, pelvis, and limbs, including an impressive front leg bone—the humerus—measuring 5.8 feet (1.78 meters) in length.

Based on the dimensions of its humerus and femur, the corresponding hind leg bone, the researchers estimated Nagatitan’s body mass at 25 to 28 tons.

Its head and teeth were not among the fossils recovered, but the researchers have a good idea of its feeding preferences based on other sauropods.

“Nagatitan was probably a bulk browser that focused on consuming high volumes of vegetation that required little to no chewing such as conifers and possibly seed ferns,” said Thitiwoot Sethapanichsakul, a University College London doctoral student in paleontology and lead author of the research published on Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports.

The climate was probably subtropical, with some forests, but also savanna-like and shrubland habitats. Nagatitan lived alongside various other dinosaurs as well as flying reptiles called pterosaurs.

The rivers were teeming with crocodiles and fish including freshwater sharks.

The ecosystem’s largest predator was a relative of the giant African meat-eating dinosaur Carcharodontosaurus, probably about 26 feet (8 meters) long and around 3.5 tons.

“At that size, it was dwarfed by Nagatitan. At full size, Nagatitan likely had very little to fear in terms of predation,” Sethapanichsakul said.

Predators probably avoided attacking healthy adults of any large sauropod species because of the danger of being squashed. But they may have targeted old or sick adults or vulnerable babies.

“Indeed, sauropods are known to have grown very quickly after hatching, and this probably relates to the dangers of predation. The sooner sauropods could become large, the safer they were because they would have been more difficult to tackle,” University College London paleontologist and study co-author Paul Upchurch said.

Sauropods included the largest land animals in Earth’s history.

Nagatitan was huge by any standard, but not on the scale of some South American sauropods such as Argentinosaurus and Patagotitan that topped 100 feet (30 meters) long.

Nagatitan’s name references Naga, a serpent-like being in some Asian religious traditions that is prominently depicted in various Thai temples.

In all, there are 14 named dinosaurs known from Thailand.

The names of several large sauropods include the word titan.

Sethapanichsakul said it might be appropriate to call Nagatitan Southeast Asia’s last “titan” because the region became a shallow sea later in the Cretaceous, meaning no more sauropods would live there.

Nagatitan provides insight into sauropod diversity in the region.

Not many sauropods are known from Southeast Asia, and Nagatitan is the largest and the geologically youngest of them.

Nagatitan belonged to a subgroup of sauropods that possessed bones with lots of internal air sacs and thin walls, traits that lightened their skeletons.

This group originated around 140 million years ago, achieved a global distribution and, around 90 million years ago, became the only sauropods left worldwide, thriving until the dinosaur age ended 66 million years ago with an asteroid impact.

Nagatitan lived at a time when Earth’s atmospheric carbon dioxide levels were climbing, corresponding to high global temperatures.

“Sauropods seem to have become particularly large at this time, with gigantic forms living in South America, China, probably North Africa, and now with Nagatitan a fairly large one in Southeast Asia,” Upchurch said.

“This possible relationship between large body size and high climatic temperatures is not fully understood, but it’s likely that the high temperatures had an impact on the plant fodder that was important to sauropods, which were very large-bodied herbivores. Nagatitan gives a glimpse of the period leading up to the eventual peak in body size and temperatures about 10 to 15 million years later,” Upchurch said.

Marco Rubio Uncovers Truth Behind Closed-Door China Discussions

0

In a surprising political development, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has shed light on the private conversations held between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump. Rubio’s visit to China comes under extraordinary circumstances, as Beijing has allowed his entry despite a longstanding sanction against him.

This week marks Rubio’s arrival in China, a country that had imposed strict sanctions on him for nearly six years. The sanctions were initially instated in 2020, largely due to Rubio’s outspoken criticism of China’s human rights practices—a stance that earned him the reputation of a ‘China hawk.’ Many speculated that he would be considered ‘persona non grata’ during President Trump’s diplomatic mission.

However, in a surprising diplomatic maneuver, Chinese authorities have indicated that the sanctions would not impede Rubio’s visit. They provided a technical loophole, clarifying that these restrictions were associated with his actions as a U.S. Senator rather than his current duties as Secretary of State. This clarification helped to avoid what could have been a significant diplomatic blunder.

The diplomatic engagement between Trump and Xi was marked by a grand ceremonial reception. The day kicked off with a lavish welcome that included a red carpet, an impressive military honor guard, a lively marching band, and the heartwarming sight of hundreds of schoolchildren enthusiastically waving both American and Chinese flags.

The leaders then retreated into the Great Hall of the People for their first formal round of bilateral meetings lasting around two hours where they discussed things ranging from the war in the Middle East to trade to Taiwan.

The status of Taiwan is a perennial flashpoint in the two nations’ relationship.

During the closed-door talks, Xi issued a formal warning to Trump, stating that ongoing tensions regarding Taiwan have the potential to jeopardize the entire US-China relationship.

When asked what the administration’s stance is currently on Taiwan and what was discussed, Rubio kept the answer safe.

‘Our policies on that have not changed,’ Rubio told NBC News. ‘It’s been pretty consistent across multiple presidential administrations, and remains consistent now.’

Xi has consistently pledged to bring Taiwan under Chinese control, leaving military action on the table. But Rubio warned that any attempt to do so by force would be a ‘terrible mistake.’

‘There would be repercussions for that, globally, not just in the United States,’ he said. ‘And we kind of leave it there.’

Trump described talks as ‘extremely positive’ even inviting Xi to the US later this year.

Rubio confirmed in an interview with NBC News that while the two leaders addressed the looming Iran crisis while meeting, the US is ultimately not looking for a helping hand from the Communist regime.

Their discussion largely focused on the ongoing war with Iran.

‘The Chinese side said they are not in favor of militarizing the Straits of Hormuz, and they’re not in favor of a tolling system, and that’s our position,’ Rubio told the reporter after Trump and Xi held over two hours’ worth of talks.

The President was expected to use his summit with Xi to look for a breakthrough with the Iran war.

Right now, the stakes couldn’t be higher: Iran’s stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz has effectively paralyzed global energy shipping, sending gas prices into a vertical climb and hitting families hard at the pump.

Trump gave China credit – saying they helped convince Iran to negotiate with the US for a ceasefire last month.

‘We are not immune to global oil prices at some point, because we do buy from the global market, but other countries around the world are paying a much higher price,’ Rubio said. ‘They’ve got to get involved in this as well.’

Rubio emphasized that ‘Trump didn’t ask him for anything,’ referencing Xi.

‘We’re not asking for China’s help. We don’t need their help,’ said Rubio.

The President’s trip to China was postposted by six weeks – due to the involvement in the Iran war. China has hit back on the US and Israeli strikes that started late February and requested a solution that would end the military offensive.

There was, however, an area of positive overlap in the war. Rubio said that the two leaders strongly agreed that Iran should never develop a nuclear weapon.

A Chinese government report on the meeting between President Trump and President Xi Jinping omitted any direct reference to Iran.

According to the state-run news agency Xinhua, the official readout noted only that the leaders ‘exchanged views on major international and regional issues including the Middle East situation.’

There were also other priorities on the President’s mind, Rubio explained.

Jimmy Lai, an outspoken critic of the Communist Party, has been identified by China as the ‘mastermind’ behind the pro-democracy protests that occurred in Hong Kong throughout 2019.

During his interview with NBC News, Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the President advocated for Lai’s release during the summit.

‘The President always raises that case and a couple others, and obviously we’ll hope to get a positive response from that,’ Rubio said.

When asked if the US would provide a home for Lai if he were freed by Chinese officials, Rubio did not offer a direct answer but expressed flexibility regarding the terms of his release.

‘We’d be open to any arrangement that would work for them, as long as he’s given his freedom,’ Rubio said.

Massive $200K Reward: Ex-Air Force Intel Agent on FBI’s Most Wanted for Alleged Iran Espionage

0

The FBI has announced a substantial reward of $200,000 for any information that could lead to the capture and successful prosecution of Monica Witt. This former U.S. service member and counterintelligence agent was indicted by a federal grand jury in the District of Columbia back in February 2019. The charges against her are serious, involving the transmission of national defense secrets to the Iranian government, an act considered espionage.

Monica Witt’s career with the Air Force spans over a decade, during which she served as an intelligence specialist and a special agent for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Her tenure in the military lasted from 1997 to 2008. Following her active duty, Witt continued to work closely with government secrets as a contractor until 2010, as detailed in a statement from the FBI Washington Field Office.

Throughout her time in service and as a contractor, Witt was entrusted with sensitive information, including secret and top-secret material related to foreign intelligence and counterintelligence operations. This access also included the identities of undercover personnel within the U.S. Intelligence Community, information that is highly classified and critical to national security.

According to the indictment, in a betrayal of her country, Witt allegedly defected to Iran in 2013. It is claimed that she handed over vital information to the Iranian government, thereby jeopardizing U.S. national defense information and intelligence programs.

The FBI is actively seeking any assistance from the public to locate Witt, offering a significant reward for leads that could help bring her to justice.

She allegedly intentionally provided information endangering U.S. personnel and their families stationed abroad, and conducted research on behalf of the Iranian regime to allow them to target her former colleagues in the U.S. government.

The FBI said Witt’s defection to Iran has benefitted the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which has elements responsible for intelligence collection, unconventional warfare and providing direct support to multiple terrorist organizations targeting U.S. citizens and interests.

While Witt has been indicted for her alleged crimes, she remains at large. She is known to speak Farsi and reside in Iran, and may be using aliases, including Fatemah Zahra or Narges Witt.

The FBI said it is continuing to actively work to find Witt and bring her to justice.

“Monica Witt allegedly betrayed her oath to the Constitution more than a decade ago by defecting to Iran and providing the Iranian regime National Defense Information and likely continues to support their nefarious activities,” said Daniel Wierzbicki, special agent in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office’s Counterintelligence and Cyber Division.

“The FBI has not forgotten and believes that during this critical moment in Iran’s history, there is someone who knows something about her whereabouts,” Wierzbicki continued. “The FBI wants to hear from you so you can help us apprehend Witt and bring her to justice.”

Anyone with information about Witt is asked to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI. Tips can also be shared with local FBI offices, the nearest American embassy or consulate, or submitted via tips.fbi.gov.

Unlock Elite Core Strength After 55: How Long Should You Hold a Forearm Plank?

The forearm plank has emerged as the ultimate benchmark for assessing core stability, strength, and overall fitness levels.

This exercise, often referred to as a low plank, offers a comprehensive workout for the entire body. It involves holding a straight alignment position while balancing on your toes and forearms. The key is to maintain proper form from heel to head. This position is highly effective for building core strength because it requires the engagement of deep core muscles, including the obliques, transverse abdominals, and rectus abdominus, along with the back, glutes, and shoulders.

If forearm planks aren’t part of your fitness regimen, it might be time to incorporate them. According to an expert we consulted, maintaining a forearm plank for a certain duration after reaching age 55 signifies elite core strength.

But why exactly is the forearm plank such a powerful indicator of strength?

Why is the forearm plank such a productive measure of strength?

“The forearm plank demands prolonged muscle contraction without movement, which reveals true postural stability that translates directly to daily function,” explains Marwa Ahmed, NASM-Certified Personal Trainer & Running Coach, CEO of The BodyMind Coach, Toronto, a coaching practice specializing in personalized fitness and performance training. “Unlike dynamic exercises, it exposes weaknesses in the deep core muscles that support spine health and prevent injury. This makes it an excellent test of how well someone maintains posture under sustained effort, a key predictor of independence as core function naturally declines with age.” Ahmed specializes in strength training and movement quality, with an emphasis on core stability and functional strength.

The Benchmark Plank Hold Time for Adults Over 55

According to Ahmed, a realistic benchmark for those 55+ is holding a plank for 30 to 60 seconds with perfect form—a straight line from your head to your heels without arching your back.

“This shows solid core endurance while accounting for natural age-related declines in muscle strength and stability,” Ahmed tells us.

If you’re aiming for “elite” status, holding a plank for 90 to 120+ seconds signals exceptional control and total-body tension above standard norms for this age bracket.

What’s Being Tested During a Plank?

The plank mainly promotes total-body integration with a major emphasis on shoulder endurance and core stability.

“The position challenges your ability to resist spinal movement while maintaining proper shoulder positioning, essentially testing how well your entire body works together under fatigue,” Ahmed says. “This reveals how effectively your muscles coordinate as a unit.”

Muscles Engaged

Forearm planks activate the muscles deep inside your core—including the obliques and transverse abdominis—along with the glutes, shoulders, and lower back stabilizers.

“Research shows forearm planks activate core muscles more intensely than high planks,” Ahmed explains. “For aging well, this matters because these deep stabilizers protect against back injury, improve balance, reduce fall risk, and maintain posture as muscle naturally declines after 55.”

Why Those Who Are Otherwise Strong May Still Struggle With Planks

Those who are strong in dynamic movements such as deadlifts or squats typically lack isometric endurance, proper breathing technique, and shoulder stability under sustained tension, Ahmed notes.

“Poor shoulder positioning, weak stabilizing muscles, or hip flexor dominance can cause the hips to sag early,” Ahmed adds. “It’s typically a stability and control limitation, not a strength issue. Your body has to learn to maintain tension differently than it does during movement-based exercises.”
