Mamdani Urges Regulators to Halt $500 Million Western Union Acquisition Amid Controversy Over Business Implications

0

Once again, Mayor Zohran Mamdani finds himself at the center of controversy, as his actions raise concerns about a possible anti-business agenda in New York City. Recent reports reveal that he has attempted to influence state regulators to block a substantial merger, valued at $500 million.

Last month, Mayor Mamdani called on the New York State Department of Financial Services to halt Western Union’s acquisition of Intermex, a financial services firm specializing in money transfers to Latin America. This appeal was detailed in a letter shared with Semafor.

In his letter, Mamdani argued, “This merger threatens to impose a new private tax on these same remittances, in the form of higher, supracompetitive prices that will flow directly to Western Union’s corporate coffers.”

This move is the latest in a series of actions by Mamdani that critics claim prioritize his socialist ideals over the practical governance of the city. They warn that such ideological pursuits could have dire consequences for the local economy, potentially disrupting its delicate balance.

Mamdani butting in serves as the latest example of the mayor’s attempt to flex his socialist bona fides in what critics say is pushing ideology over running the day-to-day operations of the city, with potentially disastrous results for the local economy.

“The people he says he is helping—those who suffer most from rising prices, and affordability issues—will be hurt the worst by the mayor’s behavior,” veteran Democrat strategist Hank Sheinkopf said. “The rich leave, jobs leave. Middle income New Yorkers leave, jobs leave. And tax dollars go with them.”

A rep for the mayor did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Federal Court Mandates Trump Administration to Reverse Controversial Deportation of Colombian Woman to Congo

0

In a recent development, a federal judge has mandated the Trump administration to facilitate the return of a Colombian woman to the United States after she was wrongly deported to Congo, a nation that initially declined her entry.

U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon issued the order on Wednesday, asserting that the deportation of Adriana Maria Quiroz Zapata was “likely illegal.” The 55-year-old woman, who suffers from diabetes and a thyroid disorder, has been placed in a precarious situation due to her deportation to a country unable to meet her medical needs, according to the judge’s statement.

The ruling emphasized that Congo’s inability to provide adequate medical care poses a significant threat to Zapata’s health, putting her at daily risk of severe medical complications, potentially leading to fatal outcomes.

While in detention, Zapata began experiencing alarming symptoms, including black spots appearing on her back and foot, peeling skin, and blackened nails, as detailed in a court declaration she submitted. This document, shared with the Associated Press by her attorney, underscores the gravity of her health predicament.

“She’s not doing well and fears for her life,” stated her lawyer, Lauren O’Neal, expressing Zapata’s anxiety and deteriorating condition.

Zapata entered the U.S. from Mexico in August 2024 and was taken into Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. Since being deported, she has lived in a hotel in Kinshasa, Congo’s capital. The hotel gates are locked, O’Neal said. Zapata and other deportees are rarely allowed out, and only with supervision, she said.

Zapata was among thousands of immigrants living legally in the U.S., waiting for rulings on asylum claims, when they were suddenly issued deportation decrees that ordered them expelled to countries where most had no connections.

More than 15,000 third-country deportation orders were issued in the White House push for ever more immigrant expulsions, advocacy groups say, though only a fraction of the orders have been carried out.

Few details are known about the agreements to accept these deportees, though the U.S. has signed them with a range of countries, including Ecuador, Honduras, Uganda, Cameroon and Congo. Advocacy groups estimate only a couple of hundred third-country deportations, at most, have been carried out.

Potential for a ‘Super’ El Niño Intensifies as Conditions Align

(NEXSTAR) – El Niño is poised to make its presence felt. According to a recent update from the National Weather Service released on Thursday, there is an 82% likelihood that this climatic event will emerge between May and July.

As the calendar progresses, the probability of El Niño strengthens. Experts from the National Weather Service predict a 96% chance that El Niño will persist through the winter, a period when it typically exhibits its greatest intensity.

With El Niño’s official commencement on the horizon, there is growing speculation about the potential arrival of a “super El Niño.”

Shocking Case: Man Attempts to Kill Wife Twice After Jail Release for Alleged Stabbing

A Utah resident is facing serious allegations after reportedly attempting to break his wife’s neck, just after being released from jail where he was held for allegedly stabbing her with scissors.

Aaron Ray Thomas is now charged with attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and aggravated kidnapping linked to this latest purported assault on his wife, as reported by ABC 4.

Aaron Thomas Accused of Choking Wife, “Violently Twisting” Neck

The investigation was prompted on May 7 when a desperate call was made to 911 by a woman who was “screaming and yelling.” She informed the dispatcher that her husband had “choked her and tried snapping her neck,” as detailed in an affidavit accessed by KSL.

Officers from the Grantsville City Police Department responded to the scene and found the woman in a state of hysteria. She relayed to them that her husband had attempted to kill her, according to the court records.

The woman recounted to the police that Thomas allegedly put one hand under her chin and the other behind her head, proceeding to “violently twist it,” as stated in the court documents obtained by ABC 4.

“I hope you die,” he allegedly told her, before asking, “Why won’t you die?”

Police said Thomas then tried to strangle his wife, but she was able to break free of his grasp. She got into her car to flee, but Thomas allegedly “jumped” behind the vehicle to stop her, according to the affidavit.

Police noted that the victim had red marks on her neck consistent with being strangled.

She told police that she was in fear for her life during the incident.

Aaron Thomas Arrested in March For Allegedly Stabbing Wife With Scissors

The alleged attack took place after Thomas “just got out of jail after violating a protective order” against him, per the court records.

The 27-year-old was arrested in March for allegedly stabbing his wife with scissors, according to an earlier report from ABC 4.

In that incident, witnesses reported seeing a man holding and hitting a woman inside a vehicle, according to court records obtained by the outlet. The victim—later identified as Thomas’ wife—told police that the pair had gotten into an argument and he stabbed her in the hand with scissors after she’d insulted him, then stabbed himself twice in the arm, according to the court documents. Thomas allegedly fled the scene, but was later located by police.

Thomas denied hitting or punching his wife, authorities said.

Aaron Thomas Has Prior Domestic Violence Arrests, Police Say

Police said the latest arrest is part of an ongoing pattern. He’s had 10 prior domestic violence incidents and been arrested six different times, according to the affidavit also obtained by KUTV.

“Aaron has called in 11 different times for a welfare check to be conducted on the victim,” officers alleged in the court records. “With these welfare checks, Aaron is always seeking to locate the victim after some sort of unreported domestic incident. Several times the victim has been contacted by officers and she tells them that she does not want him to know where she is due to his violent tendencies.”

Thomas is currently being held at the Tooele County Jail without bond, according to jail records reviewed by Oxygen. It’s unclear whether he has retained an attorney.

RHOBH Celebrity Addresses Rumors Involving Hayden Panettiere and Mystery Man

0

Diana Jenkins, known for her role in “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” has firmly refuted rumors suggesting she was involved in an incident where Hayden Panettiere was allegedly placed in a compromising situation with an “undressed man” at the age of 18.

Panettiere, now 36, recently made headlines by coming out as bisexual. She surprised fans with a revelation that she was pressured into sharing a bed with a “very famous” older celebrity while on a boat.

Panettiere fought back tears as she said on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast that the person who led her into the situation was a friend who she trusted before they ‘physically put me in the bed next to this undressed man who was very famous.’

Speculation quickly arose online, falsely linking Jenkins, 53, to the incident. This was primarily due to her collaboration with Panettiere on the 2008 photography book, “Room 23.”

In response, Jenkins’ representatives issued a strong statement to TMZ, dismissing the allegations. “Diana has experienced false online rumors in the past, and unfortunately, this is just another instance of that,” they stated.

“To be absolutely clear: It is not Diana, and anyone alleging otherwise will face legal action,” the statement continued.

The Daily Mail has contacted a representative for Jenkins.

Panettiere further discusses the incident in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, with Shetty opening up the chat with: ‘You write about a moment in your career where a friend of yours takes you onto a boat. You’re led to a room which has an older man in it and then basically told to perform sexual acts.’

Panettiere responded: ‘The fact that I was 18, even though I’d lived such a huge life and I thought I was oh so mature at 18… scientifically, your frontal lobes don’t develop until we’re what, 25, 26?

‘So even though I felt like I could make healthy decisions, safe decisions, I wasn’t capable of being fully aware of what was going on around me.’

The actress said she was led downstairs into a small room before being put in bed with the unidentified man, who she says behaved ‘like this was just an average day for him.’

Nashville star Panettiere said she immediately became ‘ferocious’, adding: ‘That lion in me, that fire in me… my hair stood on end…

‘I was like, “This is not happening”‘ before running out of the room and trying to hide.

Following the revelation, false speculation spread that Jenkins, 53, was allegedly the unnamed friend, due to her working with the actress on her 2008 photography book, Room 23 - Jenkins pictured with Panettiere and her then-partner Wladimir Klitschko in 2009

‘There was no jumping off and swimming away,’ she said. ‘And there was nobody who was going to be empathetic to my situation. I realized that this was nothing new to them.’

Panettiere shot to fame in 2006 aged 17 playing Claire Bennet – a high-school cheerleader who can spontaneously regenerate – on Heroes.

The revelation comes days after Panettiere came out as bisexual after years of feeling ‘forced to be perfect’ in order to avoid public scrutiny.

‘It’s sad that I had to wait till I was 36 years old to share that part of me, but better late than never, right?’ the Nashville alum told Us Weekly last week.

‘I’ve chosen to share it with the world, I’m comfortable saying I’m bisexual. I’m comfortable to confidently say that, yes, I am bisexual. I said it!’

Suspect Detained in College Student’s Alleged Murder Following Release of Chilling Surveillance Images

0

On Wednesday night, a man suspected of killing a University of Washington student on Sunday night surrendered to the police. This development came after the Seattle Police Department (SPD) took a significant step earlier that day by releasing images of the individual believed to be involved in the tragic incident. Authorities had reached out to the community, seeking assistance in locating the suspect.

In a statement issued early Thursday, the SPD provided further details, saying, “On May 13, Seattle police detectives arrested a 31-year-old man in connection to a homicide that occurred on May 10 in a University of Washington campus housing building. Officers discovered the 19-year-old victim had died from stab wounds.”

The suspect, as revealed by an SPD spokesperson to Fox News Digital, is a former student of the university. He attended the University of Washington between 2015 and 2021, adding a layer of complexity to the case given his past connection to the institution.

Alongside the announcement of the arrest, the Seattle Police Department also shared a photograph of the suspect, which was made public on May 13, 2026, in hopes of gathering more information from those who may have recognized him. The release of this image played a crucial role in advancing the investigation and ultimately led to the suspect’s surrender.

The suspect is a former student at the University of Washington who attended the school from 2015 to 2021, an SPD spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

Police said the suspect, who remains unnamed, turned himself in to the Bellevue Police Department and was transferred to the custody of Seattle homicide detectives.

Authorities were hunting for three days for the suspect after a gruesome late-night stabbing murder on Sunday in a laundry room in the Nordheim Court apartments. Those apartments are privately managed and located off campus, but are listed on the University of Washington’s website as an option for undergraduate housing.

The suspect is described as a light-skinned Black male who is approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall and has a thin build. In the photos, he sports thin wire-framed glasses, a scruffy goatee and navy blue pullover sweatshirt paired with blue jeans.

In one eerie photo, the suspect can be seen looking over his right shoulder directly into what appears to be a surveillance camera.

University of Washington Police responded to the scene, where they, along with the Seattle Fire Department, attempted life-saving measures to no avail.

The victim, who is reportedly transgender, has not been named.

“I want to express my deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and loved ones of the UW student who was killed late last night,” University of Washington President Robert Jones told the school’s newspaper The Daily. “There are no words that can express the profound loss of a student. While investigators have not yet identified a suspect or a motive, I want to recognize that when violence affects a trans person it can be especially worrying to our LGBTQIA+ community members.”

Unbelievable Marvel Movie Theories: Could These 5 Be True?

Devoted followers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) thrive on dissecting and discussing every detail of the films they adore. These avid fans, much like the filmmakers themselves, delight in uncovering Easter eggs and hidden gems that reward those with a keen eye for detail. Often, these movies contain concealed messages and nuanced hints that invite deeper exploration beyond the obvious narrative.

Venture into any social media comment thread or dive into a movie-focused subreddit, and you’ll encounter a flood of theories regarding past events, future developments, and how everything interconnects. While some of these conjectures may stray far from reality, others capture attention and stir curiosity, proving surprisingly convincing. Indeed, many of these ideas hold enough weight to be genuinely plausible!

Let’s delve into some Marvel movie theories that might just hold water. If any of these turn out to be true, they could potentially reshape the entire MCU timeline as we currently understand it!

Within the Marvel Universe, the Watcher is a character known for observing everything—it’s quite literally his role. This extraterrestrial being serves as the narrator, voiced by Jeffrey Wright, in the animated series “What If…?” and even makes a subtle appearance in “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2, cleverly hinted at through the use of surrounding shadows forming his silhouette.

Since Marvel Studios’ executive producer Brad Winderbaum confirmed the Watcher’s inclusion in “Daredevil: Born Again,” fans have been scouring the MCU for other hidden appearances. Yet, no one had identified him before this confirmation. A Reddit user proposed that a scene from 2008’s “Iron Man,” where Tony Stark assembles his prototype suit in his garage, might feature the Watcher. According to the theory, the windows on the right side resemble eyes watching Tony’s actions. However, other commenters dismissed this idea, arguing they were merely windows.

The Watcher is in the first Iron Man movie

In the Marvel Universe, the Watcher is a character who watches all — seriously, it’s in the name. The extraterrestrial serves as the narrator (voiced by Jeffrey Wright) of the animated series “What If…?” and cameos in “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2 through the clever use of the surroundings to form a silhouette of the character.

Ever since Marvel Studios’ executive producer Brad Winderbaum confirmed the Watcher’s presence in “Daredevil: Born Again,” fans have combed through the MCU to see if they can find any other instances of where the Watcher appears, but no one spotted him before. One Reddit user suggested a scene from 2008’s “Iron Man” in which Tony Stark suits up as a prototype Iron Man in his garage. If you look up at the windows on the right, they look like eyes observing Tony in action. Other commentators disputed this theory, saying they’re just windows.

However, this theory might just hold some weight. Maybe not in the exact scene that the Redditor posited, but before that, as Tony puts together the suit, especially as the light shines brightly through the windows — almost too brightly. Lest we forget, “Iron Man” is the inception of the MCU, so it would make sense that the Watcher is present in some shape or form. As an observer, he would be there at the beginning, middle, and end.

Peter Parker’s parents may have been victims of 9/11

By the time viewers meet Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the MCU, he’s a teenager who lives with Aunt May (Marisa Tomei). No backstory is provided on how Peter’s parents died, but it’s obvious that they’re gone, and he lived with May and Ben for most of his life — much like in regular canon.

One Redditor pulled out the calculator and research to posit a theory that Peter’s parents died during the September 11 attacks in 2001. For one, there are allusions to destroyed buildings and Peter having a fear of heights, which would symbolize something on a far deeper and personal level. Then, there’s the fact that Peter is confirmed to be born in August 2001, as per his passport in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” which would mean he lost his parents a month after his birth. The Redditor takes it one step further to suggest that Peter’s parents may have been first responders who lost their lives trying to help others.

It’s a powerful theory that adds another dimension to Peter’s character and personality, as well as his origin story. Being a hero already runs in his family, so he feels the responsibility to do good with his abilities. The tragedy of 9/11 radically altered so many lives, and it might have been the event that changed everything for the Parkers, too.

Bacteria is the reason behind Red Skull’s look

Remember Jesse Pinkman’s impressed look in “Breaking Bad” whenever Walter White spoke about science? Let’s give the same nod whenever someone brings out the test tubes and textbooks to discuss the MCU. Even though this is a fantastical world where gods and tree people run amok, it’s fun when elements are rooted in some semblance of real-life logic.

One Reddit user came up with the perfect explanation as to why the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) is basically a red skull in “Captain America: The First Avenger.” The best part about it is that the theory is grounded in basic science that makes sense. This commentator pointed out how Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) received a shot of penicillin before taking the Super Soldier serum, because the human body possesses so much bacteria. It’s important to get rid of the bacteria beforehand, or else it’ll only be enhanced by the serum. In Johann Schmidt’s case, he didn’t take the penicillin, so he just injected himself with this foreign substance. The result of this is what happened to his face, turning him into a red skull!

Look, this is a Captain America theory that changes everything. No one really knows what the Super Soldier serum contains, since it’s fictional, but it’s plausible to believe it has a lot of chemicals that react with human DNA. If it isn’t administered under the right conditions, the effects could mutate the body in unexpected ways.

Thanos wanted to sacrifice Nebula

One of the saddest moments in the MCU is when Thanos (Josh Brolin) sacrifices Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) for the Soul Stone in “Avengers: Infinity War.” Even though the Mad Titan is, well, mad, it’s clear that this is an event that shakes him to the core. However, he understood that a sacrifice needed to be made in his quest to complete the Infinity Gauntlet.

A Redditor suggested that Thanos must have been aware of what was required to attain the Soul Stone beforehand, hence his adopting and raising Gamora to be his tribute. However, at some point, he grew attached to his surrogate daughter and questioned how he could still get the Soul Stone without losing her. That explains the addition of Nebula (Karen Gillan) to the equation, since it’s obvious that Thanos doesn’t care for her as much as he does Gamora. Effectively, she would have been the one he preferred to sacrifice when the time came.

It’s an interesting theory because Thanos has genuine affection for Gamora. When he sacrifices her, there’s no disputing that the act breaks him. At the same time, he is maniacal and devious, so he might have had another ace up his sleeve. In this instance, though, he wasn’t able to use it.

Thor made Vision worthy

In the MCU, Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, can only be lifted by those who are worthy. Since it’s the hammer of the gods, no trickery or magic plays an influence here; you’re either worthy or not. No shortcuts. Naturally, fans are stunned when the android Vision (Paul Bettany) lifts Mjolnir without any hassle in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” How does he do it?!

This is a debate that’s been raging on for years, and fans have provided different perspectives. One Redditor came up with a believable explanation: Thor (Chris Hemsworth) made Vision worthy. When the God of Thunder’s lightning blast brings Vision to life in the movie, the android receives the divine gift of a soul.

This theory makes a lot of sense, because there’s something special and kind about Vision from the get-go — something that isn’t present in the likes of Ultron (James Spader). He’s a gentle soul who serves others — not himself. Perhaps when Thor’s lightning coursed through his synthetic body, something else grew inside of him. He isn’t only a gift from the gods, but he’s also the definition of what they see to be a perfect (and worthy) creation.

Unbelievable Divorce Demands: Attorneys Share the Wildest Settlement Requests

0

In a dramatic twist, a $20 million divorce case crumbled over none other than a $49 toaster oven.

In a similarly bizarre scenario, a woman went to great lengths to relocate a tanning bed from her marital home to her temporary hotel room during the divorce proceedings — all in the name of maintaining appearances.

Then there’s the tale of a man who insisted on keeping a couch, not for its comfort, but because it served as the site where his wife discovered his infidelity with his mistress.

Such peculiar requests are not anomalies. According to divorce lawyers, these seemingly trivial disputes often signify deeper emotional turmoil and contentious separations.

“The most common battles I encounter are over trivial, low-cost items,” divorce attorney Paul Talbert shared with The Post. “Couples will engage in intense arguments over old mugs, pots and pans, cheap dining room tables, and couches that hold little monetary value.”

While divorce remains a defining force in American life, more than 1.8 million people split in 2023 alone — attorneys say that many settlements become something else entirely.

A final battle for control, resentment, manipulation or revenge.

Hanging framed in the conference room of his New York office, a sign reminds divorce lawyer James Sexton’s clients, “It’s not about the pasta,” a reference to one of the most iconic lines in the Bravo-verse. In his practice, Sexton says that’s what divorce settlements boil down to.

“It’s very often not about pasta,” Sexton told The Post. “It’s about the thing under the thing.”

Trivial treasures

A yellowed sixth-grade yearbook that had been collecting dust in a filing cabinet became the focal point of heated letter exchanges after it “disappeared,” Sarah Jacobs, a New Jersey-based divorce attorney, told The Post.

Jacobs even recalled a client’s dispute over a “beloved wooden spoon,” allegedly a family heirloom — that no one used.

For some, the justification is practical — why buy something again? But, in reality, attorneys say, the disputes rarely involve money.

“At one point, we were debating the value of a half-full bottle of dish soap that was left under the kitchen sink,” divorce attorney Nicole Sodoma told The Post of a memorable case.

“I often find it’s not about the object — it’s about what it represents, or the outsized importance it takes on when your sense of fairness is being challenged.”

Lifestyle clashes

Sometimes the requests are about preserving a lifestyle that the marriage enabled.

Attorneys describe clients fighting to retain access to private jet memberships, airline points, or even country club bonds — perks tied to a lifestyle that, by definition, is ending.

In some cases, the fight becomes about shared spaces instead.

“I’ve had people include provisions that their ex can’t go to a certain restaurant ever again,” Sexton said. “It’s a place they used to go together — and the thinking is, ‘I don’t want to see you there if I still go.’”

Pets as pawns

In many divorces, pets become the central point of emotional warfare.

“I once had a multi-millionaire guy worth about $400 million in my conference room, look me in the eye, and he said, ‘The dog is the ball,’” said Sexton.

Other attorneys have seen similar dynamics play out. In one case, a couple spent more time testifying over the ownership of a small box turtle they found while camping than they did dividing the assets of their horses, which were worth over $1 million.

Brian Mayer, a family law attorney in California, told The Post of a settlement in which both parties would rather have custody of the golden retriever than their children.

That emotional weight has led to a rise in so-called “petnups” — agreements that determine animal custody arrangements before conflict escalates.

“Pets are no longer considered mere property,” said Debra Hamilton, a mediator and principal at Hamilton Law and Mediation PLLC. “They are family members, companions and emotional anchors.”

Control freakouts

Lawyers agree that most of these asks, albeit extreme, usually boil down to control. Or the last opportunity to inflict pain on a former partner, with requests ranging from banning an ex from certain social spaces to dictating future relationships.

“I’ve seen people try to impose restrictions on new dating partners, even requiring approval after a certain period of proving monogamous dating with that new partner,” said Sodoma.

Sexton has seen similarly extreme provisions.

“You’re never allowed to discuss me with your cousin, or you have to take down every photo of us from social media,” he said.

At times, the goal isn’t resolution — it’s disruption.

Duane Cocker, a family attorney in Washington, told The Post of a couple who fought over a $40 shelf from Walmart. It became the final sticking point in the divorce — not because of its value, but because, as he put it, one spouse “wasn’t done fighting.”

The other wanted it for a different reason: to burn it.

Why does it happen?

For people going through a split, sometimes the intention is simply to throw a grenade and watch what happens, and sometimes it’s simply about delaying the inevitable.

The behavior is actually not that surprising, some experts say. Divorce, particularly contentious ones, can be the last opportunity to exert leverage over someone who once mattered deeply.

“Relationships often end with the same passion they began,” said Sexton. “If you don’t have children together, then as soon as the papers are signed, this is over,” he adds.

‘Chump factor’

“I often see divorce negotiations become intensely focused on relatively small items or accounts that don’t materially affect the outcome,” said Katherine Miller, lawyer and author of “The Emotionally Savvy Divorce: Smart Negotiations for a Clean Break.”

She describes the phenomenon as the “chump factor” — the fear of looking like the one who got taken advantage of. Once that’s in play, people fixate on a specific item, not because of its value, but because of what giving it up seems to say.

From the outside, it looks irrational. In reality, it’s about recognition, identity, and not wanting to feel like the “one who lost.”

From Landslide Victory to Internal Turmoil: Party Rebellion Targets Former Winner

0
Efforts to unseat British Prime Minister Keir Starmer from within his party have broken out into open rebellion, with one potential rival resigning from the cabinet and two others positioning themselves for a future leadership challenge.

In a significant political development, Health Secretary Wes Streeting has resigned, marking him as the first prominent minister to step down amid speculation of a potential challenge to Keir Starmer’s leadership of the Labour Party. Streeting’s departure underscores a crisis of confidence in Starmer, whom he believes should not continue in his role for the remainder of his term.

In his scathing resignation letter, Streeting acknowledged Starmer’s international efforts, particularly his decision to keep Britain out of the conflict in Iran, describing this as an act of courage and statesmanship. However, he criticized Starmer for lacking a clear vision and direction, which he argued has left the party adrift.

Despite his criticisms, Streeting refrained from positioning himself as the ideal successor to Starmer. Instead, he advocated for a wide-ranging leadership contest to determine the party’s future, suggesting that Starmer should step aside to facilitate this process.

The pressure is mounting on Starmer following the Labour Party’s poor performance in recent local and regional elections, which has intensified scrutiny of his leadership capabilities. The electoral setback has raised questions about Starmer’s judgment and vision, casting a shadow over a leader who managed to bring Labour back to power in 2024 after 14 years in the opposition.

Starmer is under growing pressure to step down after disastrous results for his Labour Party last week in local and regional elections. The election drubbing cemented doubts among many party members about Starmer’s judgment, vision and leadership ability — a brutal indictment on a leader who returned Labour to power in July 2024 after 14 years in opposition.

Starmer responded in a generous letter to Streeting, saying he was “truly sorry” to see him leave the government and praised his stewardship of the state-run National Health Service.

Making no reference to Streeting’s criticisms, Starmer laid out his hope the two “can work together to show that Labour in power can address the problems our opponents exploit, can instal hope where they want despair, and can bring people together where they want division”.

If Starmer doesn’t step down, any challenger would need support from a fifth of Labour lawmakers, or 81, to trigger a leadership contest.

For days, Streeting had been expected to launch a bid on Thursday but the wording of his statement stoked speculation he didn’t have enough votes yet, or that he was giving Starmer a chance to announce his resignation on his own terms.

Another likely challenger, former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner, said on Thursday that she had reached an agreement with authorities to clear up questions about her taxes that forced her to leave the cabinet last September.

Rayner told The Guardian newspaper that Starmer should “reflect on” his position, adding that she was ready to “play my part” in any leadership election if Streeting triggered a contest.

A third rival, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, was ineligible for the leadership because he didn’t have a seat in parliament, but on Thursday afternoon a Labour lawmaker announced that he was standing aside so that Burnham could run in a special election. If he’s elected, Burnham could then run for the leadership.

“There is only so much that can be done from Greater Manchester. Much bigger change is needed at a national level if everyday life is to be made more affordable again,” he said, on X.

“This is why I now seek people’s support to return to Parliament: to bring the change we have brought to Greater Manchester to the whole of the UK and make politics work properly for people.”

Race to unseat Starmer heats up

Pressure for Starmer to step aside has intensified since Labour suffered heavy losses in local and regional elections last week, underscoring voter frustration with a government that has failed to deliver on pledges to boost economic growth and improve living standards for working people.

A stagnant economy and stubbornly high inflation have made it difficult for Starmer’s government to deliver on the promises it made when winning a landslide election victory less than two years ago.

Starmer has vowed to remain in office, warning lawmakers that any leadership contest would destabilise the government when it should be focused on issues like the cost of living crisis and war in the Middle East.
