Discover the New Name for PCOS: Are You Aware of These Symptoms?

TAMPA, Fla. (NewsNation) — A groundbreaking change has been announced in the medical community: polycystic ovary syndrome will now be referred to as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome.

This shift, from PCOS to PMOS, is a subtle yet significant one-letter modification that marks the culmination of over a decade of dedicated efforts by advocates and experts alike. The hope is that this new terminology will lead to swifter diagnoses and improved treatment for those affected.

The official unveiling of the name change was featured in The Lancet on Tuesday, following 14 years of collaboration between various medical and patient advocacy groups.

Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome impacts approximately 1 in 8 women globally, translating to an estimated 170 million women affected worldwide.

Critics of the old PCOS designation argued that it failed to encompass the full scope of the syndrome’s effects, which extend beyond a single organ. The updated PMOS name aims to more accurately describe the condition’s multifaceted nature, which includes metabolic disturbances, increased risks of diabetes and cardiovascular issues, alongside reproductive challenges.

People with PMOS can have an excess of androgens, or male sex hormones. All women have those hormones in small amounts, but an increased amount can lead to symptoms of the condition.

It can also lead to “polycystic ovaries,” hence the old name. But that term isn’t accurate, as what appear on ultrasound to be cysts are eggs in arrested development.

That name risks confusion with true ovarian cysts, which can become enlarged, bleed, and require surgery to remove them.

Patients advocated for a name change to better reflect the wider impact of the condition and because of the stigma against reproductive conditions in certain cultures, where a woman’s reproductive ability determines her value.

What are the symptoms?

Many patients struggle to get diagnosed with PMOS and report having their symptoms brushed off by doctors who focus narrowly on the reproductive impacts.

Infertility is one possible symptom, but there are others that may go undetected for years or a lifetime. The symptoms, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, include:

  • Missed periods, irregular periods or light periods
  • Enlarged ovaries
  • Extra body hair
  • Weight gain
  • Acne
  • Thinning hair
  • Skin tags on the neck or armpits
  • Dark skin on the back of the neck, armpits and under the breasts

Health care providers may diagnose the syndrome with a combination of ultrasounds, blood tests and evaluating a patient’s health history.

Causes and treatments for PMOS

PMOS was first described in 1935, when it was thought to be a disease of the ovaries. But over the decades, researchers have found an imbalance of hormones causes it. The main hormones affected are insulin and androgens.

Those imbalances affect multiple systems in the body, not just the reproductive organs. Metabolic function, mental health and skin are also affected.

The new name won’t change treatments for the condition, which is typically managed with a combination of medication and lifestyle changes, but may help women access that treatment more quickly through earlier diagnosis.

There will be a transitional period, with the new name fully implemented in the next update to international guidelines for managing the disease, which will be published in 2028.

Child Injured in Fultondale Dispute Between Mothers, Expected to Recover

0

FULTONDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — A student from Fultondale is on the road to recovery at Children’s of Alabama after being caught in a shooting incident that erupted from a dispute between his mother and another woman at their apartment complex on Monday evening.

According to Police Chief Marcel Walker, the young boy, who is in the 6th grade, underwent surgery on Tuesday after a bullet struck his left side and became lodged in his elbow. Chief Walker assured that the boy is expected to fully recover. Meanwhile, the two mothers involved in the altercation have been taken in for questioning, though no arrests have been made at this point.

Officers responded to a 911 call at the Chapel Creek Apartments at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

The incident began as a verbal dispute between two women over an earlier incident involving their children on the apartment’s playground, which eventually turned into a physical fight.

During the confrontation, one of the women brandished a firearm and discharged a single shot, inadvertently hitting the 6th grader, who was nearby and not part of the dispute.

“I’m extremely upset and disgusted about the actions of two adult women,” the Chief stated. “This is no place for two mothers to result in violence with a gun being present and a child being shot.”

Neighbor Paul Harris, a father of 3, shared his reaction to the shooting:

“Parents got to do better,” he remarked. “They got to sit down and be able to talk stuff out when it’s got something to do with the kids.”

Lauren Arnold is a licensed professional counselor at Impact Family Counseling.

When it comes to having tough conversations, she said making sure you’re calm is key, and if you feel your temperature starting to rise you should walk away.

“I think walking away is important,” she explained. “De-escalation is not weakness; it’s prioritizing our safety over pride.”

She said it’s never a good idea to bring a child along when confronting someone.

“Bringing them into that situation brings those heightened emotions,” she noted. “Not bringing them can lessen those nervous system feelings.”

The shooting remains under investigation. Chief Walker says you can always call 911 and let local law enforcement respond.

Tragic Double Homicide: Man Allegedly Murders Coworker and Roommate Over Workplace Tensions

A tragic incident unfolded when a man allegedly attacked and killed his coworker in an act of violence reportedly sparked by feelings of being overly controlled at work.

Ramy Fahim has confessed to the murder of his colleague Griffin Cuomo, along with Cuomo’s roommate, Jonathan Bahm. This confession was confirmed by a press release from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office in California, dated May 6.

Initially, Fahim, aged 30, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. However, subsequent evaluations found him to be mentally competent. He now faces the prospect of two life sentences without the possibility of parole, as stated by a spokesperson for the District Attorney’s Office.

Fahim served as a research associate, while Cuomo worked in marketing at Pence Wealth Management located in Newport Beach. This information comes from a prosecution trial brief reviewed by Oxygen.

According to the brief, Fahim and Cuomo once maintained a friendly rapport, often exchanging messages outside of professional settings. Unfortunately, their relationship began to sour in early 2022, leading to the tragic events.

Fahim was allegedly frustrated with Cuomo, whom he felt “micromanaged” him and interrupted his lunch breaks. Coworkers told investigators that Fahim sometimes yelled at Cuomo, which contributed to a tense atmosphere at work.

About a month before the murders, Cuomo told coworkers he was carrying a knife for protection because he feared Fahim.

Investigators said Fahim planned the attack by scouting Cuomo’s Anaheim apartment complex before sneaking onto the rooftop deck on April 18, 2022, shortly after midnight.

Fahim lingered at the building for approximately six hours before making his way to the sixth floor, armed with a black trash bag full of cleaning supplies, according to the brief.

He then “patiently” waited for Cuomo outside his unit and when Cuomo opened the door to leave for work, he ambushed him “without warning,” stabbing him in the throat, according to the brief.

Prosecutors said Fahim then pushed Cuomo back inside the apartment, where he stabbed him 50 more times.

When Bahm witnessed the attack, he ran into the bathroom, locked the door and called 911, according to the brief, but Fahim forced his way inside.  Although Bahm was able to run for the front door, Fahim caught up with him near the kitchen and stabbed him more than 30 times.

When Anaheim police arrived, they ordered Fahim outside and he complied by crawling into the hallway, per the brief, while bleeding from a thigh wound.

Police recovered a bloody knife from Fahim’s sweatshirt pocket, while a search of his vehicle uncovered two shovels, tarps, rope and another knife in his car.

Fahim admitted to killing Cuomo and Bahm, but blamed his actions on a schizophrenia diagnosis, according to the brief. Fahim said he had heard voices for months, instructing him to carry out both good and bad deeds, including murder.

Fahim said he had planned to cut off Cuomo’s head, bury it “in nature” and throw his body in the trash, per the brief.

Killing Bahm, Fahim told investigators, was an act of “panic” and “necessity” and because of the voices.

“These young men were just starting to live out their dreams and find their places in the world. But an intruder who stalked them and then slashed them to death in their own home interrupted those dreams,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a 2022 press release. “The callous way that two young lives were ended cannot be ignored and we will do everything we can to ensure justice is served.”

Fahim will be sentenced on May 13, a spokesperson from the District Attorney’s Office told Oxygen.

MEMORISE: Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, – Hebrews 12:1 (KJV)

READ: Galatians 6:7-8 (KJV)

7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 Chronicles 21-24

Open Heaven 13 May 2026 MESSAGE

All human beings on earth leave their footprints in the sands of time. While some leave negative footprints, others leave positive ones. The actions you take today are the footprints you are leaving behind, and they will determine your future.

Today’s Bible reading says that you will reap whatever you sow. Just as you cannot plant onions and expect to reap apples, you must be intentional about the seeds you sow in your journey through life if you want to get the best out of your time on the earth. You must act and speak carefully every day to ensure that you do not jeopardise your future by sowing the wrong seeds.

In this age and time, one of the popular places a fellow can leave negative footprints is on the internet. There is even a popular saying that the internet never forgets. You should be mindful of the things you post on social media and your communication on the internet in general. Posting negative content and portraying inappropriate behaviour online might come back to haunt you later in future. However, if your digital footprint is good, you will not need to worry about any negative impact.

Today’s memory verse says that we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses. Many people think that this refers to the hosts of heaven alone. However, the devil and his agents are also watching every move you make, and they are on the lookout for any mistake they can use against you in the future. Furthermore, your fellow human beings are also part of the cloud of witnesses that are observing every move you make.

Beloved, do not think you can do some things in secret without anyone knowing about them. Even if no one sees you, God sees you, and the hosts of heaven are recording all your actions. In Jeremiah 17:10, God said, “I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” He is constantly looking at your heart and evaluating your thoughts and actions. Therefore, you must ensure that you renew your mind daily with His word (Romans 12:2) and honour Him with your actions (Colossians 3:17). Make a commitment today to never engage in anything that will have a negative effect on your future. I pray that the Lord will continually guide you to do the right things at the right time, in Jesus’ name.

Trump Appoints ICE Veteran with Private Detention Connections as Acting Director: Implications for Immigration Policy

0

A veteran immigration enforcement official with significant connections to the detention industry is anticipated to assume leadership of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to sources from Fox News. This anticipated appointment is likely to intensify scrutiny from Democrats due to the official’s previous affiliations with a major private prison company. Meanwhile, Republicans are advocating for increased funding and stepped-up deportation efforts for the agency.

David Venturella is poised to be appointed as the acting director of ICE following the departure of the current Acting ICE Director, Todd Lyons, who is set to step down next week, as per multiple sources familiar with the situation.

Venturella has been serving as a senior advisor within the Trump administration at ICE. His role reportedly included a senior position within the division responsible for managing detention center contracts. However, ICE has clarified that he was not involved in reviewing, approving, or recommending these contracts.

Venturella’s recruitment was facilitated by Tom Homan after President Donald Trump assumed office.

Before his current stint in government, Venturella worked for more than a decade at a private prison firm called The GEO Group, which has contracts with ICE to operate immigration detention facilities.

The company has faced numerous allegations and lawsuits claiming abuse, neglect and substandard care at Geo detention facilities.

Venturella, a career immigration enforcement official, made millions after moving to GEO-operated, where he worked as an executive from 2012 to 2023 and as a paid consultant through Jan. 31, 2025.

He started his career in 1986 at the former INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) and as acting director and assistant director of ICE’s Office of Detention and Removal Operations.

Sources said he is well liked within ICE and one source described him as “definitely on board with the mission and the mass deportation agenda,” though he does not support certain policies, including roving immigration patrols, that were being used during former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s tenure.

As Republicans attempt to push through a roughly $70 billion reconciliation package to fund ICE and CBP, Democrats are expected to make noise about Venturella’s prior stint with GEO, which has a history of complaints.

There will also likely be questions about Venturella’s past financial ties to GEO and potential conflicts, given reports that he has held a senior role in the ICE division that manages detention-center contracts that could go to his former employer. ICE has said Venturella has divested from GEO, has no financial ties to the company and has no role in reviewing, approving or recommending contracts.

Discover All the Essential Details About the Latest A24 Film

A24 is gearing up to release a chilling new horror film titled “Backrooms.” Curious about the studio’s latest foray into the world of horror and the intricate lore that surrounds it? Watch the video above for all the spine-tingling details.

“Backrooms” is inspired by an urban legend that has been a staple of meme culture since 2019. It originally gained traction as a live-action horror short crafted by Kane Parsons, also known as Kane Pixels. This creepypasta phenomenon has now transitioned into a viral sensation and is set to become a major motion picture. Directed by Parsons himself, the film boasts a budget of approximately $10 million and is poised to be a horror flagship for A24 as the summer box office season kicks into high gear.

The full-length adaptation enriches the narrative of the unsettling experience of being trapped in a series of unused or unexplored rooms hidden within a public building. The story follows two characters: Clark, portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, a furniture store owner who mysteriously vanishes, and his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline, played by Renate Reinsve. Dr. Kline ventures into the store to find Clark, only to find herself ensnared in the foreboding backrooms, struggling to find an escape and return to reality.

However, “Backrooms” will face fierce competition at the box office. Its release is slated for May 29, 2026, just three weeks after “Mortal Kombat II” and merely a week after “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.” Depending on the staying power of these blockbuster films, the relatively modest horror flick could face significant challenges.

Moreover, May is shaping up to be a hectic month for horror releases. On May 1, “Hokum,” a Neon release from indie horror talent Damian McCarthy, will hit theaters. Following that, Curry Barker’s eagerly awaited sophomore film, “Obsession,” will premiere on May 15. Paramount Pictures will also enter the horror fray with “Passenger” on May 22, directed by André Øvredal, known for the cult favorite “The Autopsy of Jane Doe.”

The feature-length take on the concept gives further narrative backbone to the eerie feeling of being caught and lost in a set of disused or never touched rooms located at the back of a public establishment. It centers on two people — Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a furniture store owner who disappears randomly one day, and his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve), who comes to the store to search for him after he vanishes. Unfortunately for Mary, she becomes as lost in the backrooms as he is, searching for a way out and a way back to reality.

Can Backrooms beat out the competition?

“Backrooms” is facing some stiff competition at the box office. it’s set to drop on May 29, 2026, three weeks after “Mortal Kombat II” and one week after “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.” Depending on what sort of legs those two movies happen to have, things could be quite tricky for the considerably more modest genre flick.

Adding to that challenge, May is also a busy month for horror: May 1 will see the release of “Hokum,” a Neon release from indie horror sensation Damian McCarthy, while May 15 will bring the highly-anticipated second film from Curry Barker, “Obsession.” And on May 22, Paramount Pictures will hit the road with “Passenger,” from André Øvredal, director of the cult horror hit “The Autopsy of Jane Doe.”

Four other mid-budget affairs are opening against “Backrooms”: “The Breadwinner,” in which Nate Bargatze becomes a stay-at-home dad when his wife hits it big on “Shark Tank.” The other films are “The Furious,” a crime thriller; “Pressure,” a historical drama that chronicles the last 72 hours before D-Day; and the dark drama “The Currents.” One week later, they’ll all have major competition from the latest edition of “Scary Movie.” Want to know more about the history of “Backrooms” before hitting the theater? Click our article above and take a deep dive into its storied history.

Jason Collins Breaks Ground in Sports History by Coming Out as Gay

0

In an era where change was imminent, a trio of words from Jason Collins reverberated through the sports world, altering its landscape forever.

Collins, who passed away at the age of 47 following a courageous battle with Stage 4 glioblastoma, made history 13 years ago with a groundbreaking revelation in Sports Illustrated, marking a significant moment in sports and society.

“I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay,” Collins declared in the May 6, 2013 issue of the magazine. With this bold statement, he became the first openly gay player in the NBA, paving the way for greater inclusivity and acceptance in the league.

This announcement came on the heels of similar declarations by other prominent athletes. Soccer player Robbie Rogers and WNBA star Britney Griner, fresh off being the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, had also come out publicly. Notably, six years prior, former NBA player John Amaechi had revealed his sexual orientation, though it was after his career had concluded.

At the time of his historic announcement, Collins was transitioning in his professional career, having just wrapped up a season with the Washington Wizards. He described himself as a free agent, both “literally and figuratively,” embracing a new chapter with courage and authenticity.

In his essay, Collins, who played one more NBA season for the Nets after his historic news, said he never sought to make history and that his journey in “self-discovery” came over a long journey.

“I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn’t the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, ‘I’m different.’ If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand.

“My journey of self-discovery and self-acknowledgement began in my hometown of Los Angeles and has taken me through two state high school championships, the NCAA Final Four and the Elite Eight, and nine playoffs in 12 NBA seasons.”

Then-commissioner David Stern commended Collins for his candor and leadership shortly after he penned the essay in SI.

“As Adam Silver and I said to Jason, we have known the Collins family since Jason and [his twin brother] Jarron joined the NBA in 2001 and they have been exemplary members of the NBA family,” Stern said. “Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue.”

In the wake of his statement, Collins, according to the New York Times, said he received a phone call of support from Tim Hardaway, who had previously said he did not like gay people and would not have wanted to be on Amaechi’s team. He also received praise from others, including then-Lakers star Kobe Bryant.

In 2021, when Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib became the first active NFL player to come out, Collins, drawing on his on experience, said the NFLer would be impacting more people than he knew.

“He’s helping people across the board, of all ages,” Collins told the Los Angeles Times.

On Tuesday, commissioner Adam Silver commended Collins for his efforts both on and off the court.

“Jason Collins’ impact and influence extended far beyond basketball as he helped make the NBA, WNBA and larger sports community more inclusive and welcoming for future generations,” Silver said in a statement. “He exemplified outstanding leadership and professionalism throughout his 13-year NBA career and in his dedicated work as an NBA Cares Ambassador. Jason will be remembered not only for breaking barriers, but also for the kindness and humanity that defined his life and touched so many others.”

Collins played 13 years in the NBA, eight of which were with the Nets.

Kingsport Woman Faces Charges After DUI Crash Kills One, Injures Three: Affidavit Details Tragic Incident

In Johnson City, Tennessee, a tragic incident has led to serious charges against a Kingsport woman. News Channel 11 reported on Tuesday that Dominique M. Neal, aged 27, faces charges of “DUI by consent” after her decision to allow her vehicle to be operated by an intoxicated driver resulted in a deadly accident. Inquest Launched Into Police Officer’s Deadly Taser Incident Involving Elderly Woman

Three years following the tragic incident where a police officer used a Taser on a 95-year-old resident in aged care, an inquest is set to delve into how dementia patients are treated and how authorities respond to violent situations.

Back in May 2023, then-senior constable Kristian James Samuel White deployed his Taser on Clare Nowland at the Yallambee Lodge nursing home located in Cooma, southern NSW, after being summoned to the scene.

Weighing just 48 kilograms, the elderly great-grandmother, who was living with dementia, suffered a fall and sustained a head injury.

She subsequently passed away in the hospital a week later, never regaining consciousness due to a brain bleed.

In November 2024, a jury in the NSW Supreme Court reached a guilty verdict, convicting White of manslaughter.

He was sentenced to a two-year good behaviour bond in March 2025, a decision that was later upheld by the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal.

With the criminal process concluded, Judge Teresa O’Sullivan will preside over a three-day inquest at Queanbeyan Courthouse starting on Wednesday.

The probe will look into the circumstances of Ms Nowland’s death and White’s discharge of his Taser.

Judge O’Sullivan will also examine how first responders deal with dementia-related incidents of aggression and the adequacy of dementia treatment in aged care facilities.

Mrs Nowland was holding a knife while using a walking frame and had been ignoring staff attempts to disarm her, White’s trial was told.

During a two-minute and 40-second encounter at Yallambee Lodge, White drew his stun gun and pointed it at Mrs Nowland for a minute before saying “nah, bugger it” and discharging the weapon at her chest.

The then-officer was suspended from his job with pay for about 18 months prior to the guilty verdict.

The 36-year-old Cooma man was then suspended without pay before being removed from the force in December 2024.

He took action against NSW Police in the Industrial Relations Commission to regain his position but dropped that bid in August 2025.
