Transform Your Core: 4 Effective Morning Exercises to Reduce Belly Overhang for Those Over 60

0

Kickstart your morning with these targeted exercises to bid farewell to those stubborn “love handles.”

Carrying extra weight around your midsection isn’t just a cosmetic concern; it poses serious health risks. This abdominal fat, known as visceral fat, envelops your internal organs and heightens the likelihood of developing conditions such as type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and even cancer. Moreover, it disrupts your metabolic functions, leading to insulin resistance and persistent inflammation. With this knowledge at hand, let’s explore some effective strategies to combat this harmful fat.

We consulted Carly Harvey, a seasoned personal trainer, online coach, and Clubbercise instructor at Champneys, who outlines four morning exercises that are more effective at reducing belly fat than traditional abdominal workouts for those over 60. Harvey, dedicated to helping individuals achieve balance in their lifestyle rather than imposing restrictions, is also certified to train peri/menopausal women.

“As we grow older, especially past 60, accumulating belly fat becomes more prevalent for several reasons,” Harvey points out. “Aging leads to muscle loss, or sarcopenia, affecting the core muscles. Additionally, hormonal shifts, such as reduced levels of estrogen and testosterone, combined with elevated stress and poor sleep, can increase cortisol, a hormone linked to fat accumulation in the abdomen. These physiological changes impact everyone, even those who are physically active, making it harder to manage belly fat compared to younger individuals.”

“After 60, belly fat becomes more common due to a mixture of reasons. As we age, we lose muscle mass (sarcopenia), which affects the muscles around the tummy area,” Harvey explains. “Hormonal changes in the body such as a drop in oestrogen and testosterone added to increased stress and poor sleep which can increase cortisol, all of which are linked to storing belly fat. These changes in the body negatively affect individuals and even if they are actively exercising they will still make an impact and can mean more belly fat; something that a younger person wouldn’t struggle with so much.”

While ab workouts can help sculpt abdominal muscles, they don’t deal with the belly fat your body stores on top. You can actually perform crunches and still, that belly overhang won’t budge. According to Harvey, you can effectively burn belly fat by adding more movement to your days, adopting better sleep habits, managing stress, and consuming a nutritious diet.

Start small and work your way up until you start seeing results. The important thing is to take that first step!

Bodyweight Squats

  1. Stand tall, feet shoulder-width apart on the floor.
  2. Extend your arms ahead of you or place your hands on your hips.
  3. Bend at the knees and hips as you lower into a squat.
  4. Descend until your thighs are parallel to the floor.
  5. Press through your heels to rise back up to standing.

Standing March

  1. Start by standing tall with your feet hip-width apart and arms at your sides.
  2. Lift your left knee up to hip height, pausing for a moment at the top and keeping your core engaged.
  3. Lower your foot and repeat with your right knee, holding it at the top for a moment before lowering.
  4. Maintain solid posture and steady breathing throughout.

Cross-Body Knee Drives (Standing or Elevated)

  1. Stand tall, feet hip-width apart and hands behind your head.
  2. Activate your core as you drive your left knee toward your right elbow.
  3. Return to the start.
  4. Repeat on the other side.

High Plank

  1. Place your hands under your shoulders.
  2. Press into the pads of your fingers and hug your inner arm toward your armpit.
  3. Walk your feet out to hip-width.
  4. Engage your abs, squeeze your buttocks, and pull upward through your quads.

Shooting Incident Unfolds at Louisiana Mall Food Court

Chaos erupted at a Louisiana shopping center when an active shooter unleashed a barrage of bullets in the food court during the bustling lunchtime hour on Thursday.

The unsettling scene unfolded at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, where at least 10 individuals were injured after shots were fired near the food court around 1:20 p.m., according to police reports.

Among those wounded, an unspecified number remain in critical condition, with some requiring emergency surgery, as reported by Chief Morse of the Baton Rouge Police Department.

Law enforcement is currently on the hunt for either one or two suspects involved in the shooting, prompting the closure of all entrances to the mall as the search continues.

Chief Morse indicated that the attack appears to have been a deliberate confrontation between two groups, rather than a random act of violence.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and set up a triage area near JCPenney while panicked people rushed out of the building and into the parking lot as authorities escorted them to their vehicles.

Other harrowing footage showed officers carrying young children and their mother to safety.

Shoppers and employees were shuffled into tunnels that run along the mall’s tunnels after shots rang out, according to a WBRZ reporter who was at the mall when shots rang out.

Court Documents Reveal Ben Roberts-Smith’s Intentions to Depart Australia

0

In brief:

  • Court documents released Thursday show Roberts-Smith investigating opportunities overseas.
  • A written affadavit from his partner insists it was not the couple’s intention to flee.

Before his arrest, Ben Roberts-Smith was exploring business ventures abroad, although his partner insists the war veteran planned to come back home if any criminal charges arose.

The former SAS member found himself in custody on April 7, facing charges related to the alleged killing or ordering the execution of five unarmed prisoners during his service in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2012.

After being granted bail on Friday, Roberts-Smith was released from detention, with his father, Len Roberts-Smith—a retired judge from the Supreme Court of Western Australia—providing a $250,000 surety.

Documents from the 47-year-old’s bail hearing at Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court, made public on Thursday, reveal his and partner Sarah Matulin’s intentions to start a business outside Australia.

In a court affidavit, Matulin explained their desire to leave Australia to achieve a sense of normalcy, while emphasizing Roberts-Smith’s commitment to return if faced with legal charges.

“We have never planned to run away from this and have always intended to face the criminal charges if they presented,” she wrote.

“We have had countless discussions that if he was ever requested to do so, he would hand himself into police custody voluntarily.”

In March 2023, Roberts-Smith contacted the chief executive of an outdoor weather protection firm in Chiang Mai, Thailand, looking to meet business contacts over a beer.

By October, the couple had become serious about moving overseas, contacting a friend who owned an avocado farm in Myanmar to discuss opportunities, Matulin wrote.

Later that month, Roberts-Smith had started inquiring about buying a fitness and wellness business in Spain, and began the visa process to move there.

Matulin said it was no secret they wanted to move to Spain because they had openly discussed this with family and friends.

In his own affidavit, Roberts-Smith said he had flown overseas 28 times since 2018 — including a taxpayer-funded trip to the UK for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022.

He had always returned despite knowing he was being investigated for war crimes, he wrote.

His lawyer Karen Espiner revealed in another affidavit that she offered to have her client arrested by “appointment” by handing himself in at a police station if police disclosed he was going to be charged.

The solicitor said Roberts-Smith did not tell the Officer of the Special Investigator — which was probing the war crime allegations — of the Spanish plans because there were no restrictions on his travel at the time.

The Victoria Cross recipient has consistently proclaimed his innocence, including during a failed defamation action against publisher Nine over articles detailing a number of alleged war crimes.

While the war veteran’s former employer Kerry Stokes had funded the defamation proceedings, Roberts-Smith revealed he had to liquidate all his assets to fund the later failed appeals.

His parents also coughed up $400,000 to pay for his legal costs, his affidavit says.

“I have no assets and my personal savings are significantly depleted,” he wrote.

Roberts-Smith receives a service pension of $4500 a fortnight, his affidavit says.

He is accused of machine-gunning an Aghan prisoner Mohammed Essa and ordering the execution of his son Ahmadullah to “blood the rookie” during a raid at a compound called Whiskey 108 in April 2009.

Ahmadullah had a prosthetic leg.

The then-SAS soldier placed firearms on the bodies to falsely claim they were enemy combatants, court documents seen by AAP say.

In August 2012 at the village of Darwan, Roberts-Smith is accused of kicking a hand-cuffed Ali Jan off a 10 metre cliff before ordering that he be dragged over a creek bed and shot.

Two months later at Syahchow, he allegedly lined up two prisoners in a corn field, shooting one of them with another soldier.

He ordered a subordinate to shoot the other before throwing a grenade on the bodies to cover up what he had done, court documents say.

The matter will return to court on June 2.

Chaos erupted at a Louisiana shopping complex on Thursday afternoon when an active shooter opened fire in the food court. The unsettling incident occurred at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, sending shockwaves through the community.

At approximately 1:20 p.m., gunfire shattered the usual lunchtime bustle, injuring at least ten individuals, according to police reports. The shooting took place in the vicinity of the mall’s bustling food court, a location typically packed with shoppers and diners.

Among the injured, several victims are reportedly in critical condition. Some were swiftly transported to the hospital, where they underwent emergency surgery, as confirmed by Chief Morse of the Baton Rouge Police Department.

In response to the shooting, law enforcement swiftly closed all entrances to the mall as they launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. Authorities are currently on the lookout for one or possibly two suspects believed to be involved in the incident.

Chief Morse indicated that the shooting appears to have been a targeted attack, involving a conflict between two groups. The investigation continues as police work diligently to bring those responsible to justice.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and set up a triage area near JCPenney, the outlet reported.

Panicked people were seen running out of the building and into the parking lot as authorities escorted them to their vehicles.

Get to Know the Family Behind the ‘Storage Wars’ Star

0

Renowned for his appearances on “Storage Wars,” Darrell Sheets was not just a television personality on a quest for hidden treasures; he was a man whose true riches were his family, waiting for him beyond the limelight of reality TV.

While fans cherished his on-screen antics, it was evident that Darrell took immense pride in his roles as a father and grandfather, roles that brought him profound joy and fulfillment.

Tragically, the world lost this beloved figure on April 22, when Darrell was discovered deceased at his home in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, at the age of 67.

The Lake Havasu City Police Department confirmed in a statement, shared by Page Six, that the cause was an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Following the discovery, Darrell’s remains were transferred to the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination.

After a “Storage Wars” castmate alleged that Darrell had recently been “tormented” by a cyberbully, police confirmed to Page Six they are aware of the claims, which are part of their “active investigation.”

Fans got to know Darrell over the course of 163 episodes of “Storage Wars” between 2010 and 2023, where he earned the nickname “The Gambler,” but his loved ones knew him best.

Kimber Wuefel

Darrell’s relationship status at the time of his death was not clear, but he was still close to longtime love Kimber Wuerfel, whom People reported was his wife.

The two had been together since 2011 and split at some point. Darrell was engaged to a woman named Romney Snyder in 2016, according to an Instagram post, and dated a woman named Patty Rich in 2019, per TMZ.

However, they evidently reconciled in recent years as Wuerfel regularly appeared on Darrell’s social media. He referred to her as “my Girl” in an Instagram post from September 2024 but hadn’t posted about her since.

According to her Instagram, Wuerfel is a real estate agent based in Orange County, California.

In a Mother’s Day tribute in 2021, Darrell called Wuerfel “one of the hardest working women I know” and added that he’s “so grateful” to have her in his life.

Brandon Sheets

Brandon regularly appeared on “Storage Wars” alongside his dad and earned the nickname “Sidebet” throughout his time on the show.

He married his wife, Melissa, in 2015, with Darrell sharing his excitement for his son in an Instagram post on their big day.

Brandon and Melissa are parents to their daughter Addilyn and son Laiden.

The identity of Brandon and his sister Tiffany’s biological mother is not known.

Tiffany Sheets

Unlike her brother, very little information is publicly available about Tiffany, who didn’t appear on “Storage Wars” with her father.

In an Instagram post from September 2020, Darrell celebrated Tiffany’s 38th birthday and said it was “to[o] bad she’s not around to see what a great kid” her daughter Zoie “is turning out to be.”

Darrell shouted out Tiffany “where ever [sic] you are” and said he hoped she is “happy and healthy and living your life to the fullest.”

He added that a phone call from her to Zoie “would be nice.”

Zoie

It appears that in the absence of her mother, Tiffany, Zoie is being raised by her grandfather.

Zoie made frequent appearances on Darrell’s Instagram feed and the two appeared to be very close, with him regularly praising her for her accomplishments.

“So hard to believe this little gal is 18 today,” he wrote in a birthday post for Zoie in July 2022.

Just a few months prior, in May 2022, Darrell and Kimber were by Zoie’s side as she graduated from high school.

NYC Councilman Chi Ossé Arrested During Eviction Protest: Video Captures Tense Moments with Mamdani Support

0

Ossé, a well-known Democratic socialist and supporter of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, was involved in a protest against the eviction of a woman who had lived in her home for sixty years. The 28-year-old councilman’s office released a statement highlighting the issue of “Black displacement” in Bed-Stuy, emphasizing that the woman is among many Black homeowners in Brooklyn facing the threat of deed theft.

The incident was chaotic, with a bystander shouting, “Motherf—–, that’s a councilman, what the f— are you doing?” as Ossé was forcibly taken to the ground and detained.

A spokesperson from the New York City Police Department informed Fox News Digital on Thursday that Ossé was one of four individuals arrested. They face charges of obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct.

A New York City Police Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital on Thursday that Ossé was one of four people arrested and charged with obstruction of governmental administration and disorderly conduct.

“I will absolutely be filing a misconduct report against the officers who slammed me on the ground. I urge the other folks who were taken into captivity to do the same. I know there are two individuals who were doing the same thing that I was doing, who have reported that they are dealing with a concussion right now,” Ossé said following his arrest.

“I would hope to see that they are held accountable. I hope the police commissioner is taking a deep look on their past, on their histories, and I hope they take our complaints seriously,” he added.

The New York City Department of Finance describes deed theft as occurring “when criminals record fraudulent deeds, mortgages or other liens against a property without the owner’s knowledge or consent.

“Anyone can be a victim of deed fraud, but seniors, immigrants, and people of color are most at risk,” it added.

A police spokesperson told Fox News Digital that the New York City Sheriff’s Office and NYC Marshals showed up at an address in Brooklyn “to carry out an eviction and to determine if an individual, who is considered a ward of the state of Georgia and is supposed to be in the state of Georgia but hasn’t been for several years, was at this residence.”

Police said the NYC Marshals had a signed order from a judge to evict the individual, but when they arrived, protesters were blocking access to her building.

“As is depicted on body-worn camera footage, Council Member Ossé was arrested after two protesters were arrested for blocking the gate in front of the building,” the spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

“When those two people were arrested, Ossé was not in front of the gate,” the spokesperson continued. “Once those two were arrested, Ossé pushes past officers who were attempting to block him from standing in front of the gate, and then he begins to block the gate entrance.”

Police said an officer then verbally engaged Ossé for a few seconds before trying to arrest him, but that Ossé physically resisted “attempts to take his hands and arms, appearing to flail his arms and hands to prevent officers from restraining him.”

“The officers have no room behind them (gate to house up against them and Ossé) to maneuver him and end up taking him down for arrest, as is within guidelines for making an arrest for someone committing obstruction of governmental administration,” the spokesperson added.

Indiana Man Arrested in Depot Park Bushes: No ID Sparks Gainesville Police Action

0

In a peculiar turn of events in Gainesville, Florida, a 33-year-old man named Moheet Mohan Kanolkar found himself under arrest following an unsettling report from a concerned passerby. Onlookers became suspicious when they noticed Kanolkar hiding within the foliage at Depot Park. Responding officers observed him adjusting his clothing as they approached. Lacking any form of identification, Kanolkar was found with a bus ticket suggesting he had just traveled from Atlanta.

The incident unfolded on the morning of April 22, around 7:46 a.m., as officers from the Gainesville Police Department intensified their patrols in the Depot Park vicinity. This increased vigilance was in response to a spate of recent public indecency cases in the area. A passerby tipped off an officer about a man behaving strangely along the walking trail, hidden amid the bushes, behavior that echoed the pattern of past incidents involving public exposure that local authorities have been investigating.

Law enforcement officials discovered the individual roughly 10 feet into a wooded area, obscured by trees and shrubbery. Upon nearing, they saw him adjusting his attire. Despite multiple commands to emerge from his hiding spot, Kanolkar initially remained motionless behind a tree, seemingly attempting to maintain his concealment. It was only after several directives that he finally stepped forward from the woods.

When questioned, Kanolkar claimed he was in the park awaiting his employer, a statement that did little to clarify the situation. Officers noted that he had arrived in Gainesville at around 3:40 a.m. on a bus originating from Gary, Indiana, with a stop in Atlanta. However, Kanolkar was unable to provide details about his supposed employer or any business-related purpose for being in Gainesville. Moreover, he could not offer a plausible reason for adjusting his pants when officers confronted him, leaving many questions about his intentions unanswered.

The man reportedly said he was waiting for his boss in the woods, but officers reported that he had a bus ticket showing that he had arrived in Gainesville at 3:40 a.m. that morning on a bus from Atlanta; the ticket indicated that the trip began in Gary, Indiana. The man reportedly was unable to provide the name of his boss or the business, could not say why he was in Gainesville, and could not explain why he was pulling up his pants when officers approached him.

When he was asked for identification, the man reportedly said he did not have it on him; although he said he has a Florida ID, officers reported that they employed a fingerprint scan and facial recognition software, but a nationwide search did not find any positive identification for the man. The man reportedly would not say whether he was a United States citizen, if he had a passport or visa, or if he had any other documentation to verify his identity; according to the arrest report, he was born in India.

The man gave consent for officers to search his phone, and they reported finding multiple videos of a person “participating in self-pleasure,” as well as many screenshots of Facebook pages belonging to various young women.

The man also gave consent for a search of his belongings, which reportedly produced a condom and baby lotion, “both of which are routinely used by males who participate in self-pleasure,” according to an officer.

Kanolkar has been charged with loitering/prowling. He has no known criminal history, and Judge Bo Bayer set bail at $3,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Massive California Gang Crackdown: FBI Unravels Mexican Mafia Network, Arrests 43

0

This past Thursday saw the culmination of an extensive operation named Operation Gangster’s Paradise, led by FBI Director Kash Patel. The operation proved to be a significant blow to the notorious La Eme, known as the “gang of gangs,” as it resulted in the arrest of at least 30 of its members.

FBI Director Patel commented on the operation, highlighting its success, though he did not provide specific details about the immigration status of those apprehended. This omission leaves room for speculation, but it suggests a potentially complex background among the detained individuals.

Director Patel writes:

@FBILosAngeles executed 30 pre-dawn raids arresting 30 alleged members of the Mexican Mafia in Southern California.

Alleged murderers, drug dealers, and racketeers all taken down.

This group is also known as “La Eme,” the “gang of gangs,” known to control nearly every Hispanic street gang in the California region.

Well done to our agents, great partners and teams who executed brilliantly.

This @FBI continues to break violent gang operations all over the country.

The immigration status of any of those arrested is not mentioned, although we may very well take a pretty good guess.

A New York Post exclusive has some more details:

The arrests targeted alleged murders, drug dealers and racketeers taken in by FBI agents at residences in and around the city of Santa Ana.

The California Post has had front-row seats to SoCal gang raids in recent weeks, witnessing the FBI take down the 18th Street “supergang” in March as well as a major identity theft bust in Hollywood.

“This morning, we executed operation “Gangsters Paradise. We’ve indicted forty members and associates of the Mexican Mafia, who is the most powerful, prolific gang that operates out of state prisons,” said L.A.’s top federal prosecutor, Bill Essayli.

“They control and operate all the Hispanic street gangs out in the neighborhoods,” he added.

Federal agents working with local police arrested 43 suspects in all, confiscated firearms and seized illegal drugs, conducting 30 raids mostly in Orange County.
