Shocking Allegations: Former Biden Staffer’s Girlfriend’s Death Linked to Toxic Relationship, Says Father

0

The father of a young woman, recently graduated from college, has spoken out about several warning signs in his daughter’s relationship before she was allegedly shot by her ex-boyfriend, a former staffer for President Biden. The tragic incident unfolded in their shared California apartment.

The accused, 25-year-old Nation Wood, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter for the death of 22-year-old Samantha Emge in San Francisco on March 24. Wood insists the shooting was an accident, with investigations indicating he purportedly discharged his firearm through their apartment wall just as Emge emerged from the shower, as reported by the California Post.

Bill Phipps, Emge’s father, has described the relationship between his daughter and Wood as fraught with conflict and, at times, abusive. He has expressed skepticism over the claim that the shooting was unintentional.

Emge’s father, Bill Phipps, told the Post the couple’s relationship was tumultuous and occasionally abusive, while questioning if the alleged shooting was truly accidental.

“Their relationship was not good, and he was an abusive boyfriend. Samantha had been trying to break up with him for a while,” Phipps said, the outlet reported. “She was unable to break up with him, and she was looking forward to him going away.”

Wood was just two weeks away from joining the National Guard when the shooting occurred, and Emge had only recently moved back in with the San Francisco State graduate, the Post reported.

Emge reportedly staged an intervention with Wood regarding his alleged drinking problem after her father said he became physically and emotionally abusive. She also moved out of the home the pair shared for a period of time, her father said.

“All of her friends were constantly trying to tell her she should break up with him,” Phipps told the Post.

Wood’s LinkedIn page indicated he worked as a part-time security staffer for President Joe Biden’s Secret Service team in 2023, according to the Post. He was also reportedly photographed next to former Vice President Kamala Harris as the pair posed in front of a presidential jet.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Wood reportedly worked at the White House through July 2025 and described his current job as an “independent pre-event site security advisor.”

He told police he was “dry-firing” his gun and did not realize it was loaded when the weapon fired through a medicine cabinet and struck Emge in the face, according to the Post.

Defense attorney Paula Canny said Wood had been sober for 16 months at the time of the alleged shooting, and had initially asked the court that her client be allowed to travel to a Tucson clinic for treatment before dropping the request after Emge’s parents fought back, according to the outlet.

“Samantha told Nation’s family how much she loved Nation and how much she loved being a part of their family,” Canny said, the Post reported. “Nation’s family is devastated by this tragedy and their hearts go out to Samantha’s family and loved ones.”

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins reportedly said in a statement that the investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors could potentially weigh additional charges against Wood.

“As the investigation unfolds, if any new evidence comes to light, that is admissible in court and sufficient to meet our burden of proof, we may seek to file an amended complaint to reflect more or different charges from what was initially charged,” Jenkins said.

Wood pleaded not guilty in San Francisco Superior Court and was released to a psychiatric hospital on $300,000 bail, according to the Post.

Wood’s defense attorney and the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Justin Bieber Faces Backlash for ‘Lackluster’ Coachella Show Despite Eye-Popping $10M Deal

Justin Bieber is under fire after fans criticized his Coachella headlining performance as “lazy.” The pop sensation’s set prominently featured him singing short snippets of his hits from a laptop, despite receiving what has been described as a “groundbreaking” payment.

At 32, Bieber reportedly earned $10 million for the appearance. On Saturday night, he opted for a laid-back style, donning a hoodie, shorts, and sunglasses. This minimalist approach to his highly anticipated show left many attendees scratching their heads.

Instead of delivering a high-energy set filled with his well-loved hits, Bieber performed several tracks from his upcoming 2025 album, “SWAG II,” before transitioning to his classic songs.

During the performance, Bieber was seated on a stool, using a laptop to scroll through YouTube videos of his songs. He streamed a brief medley of 12 earlier hits.

The reaction from social media was swift and vocal.

“Not Justin Bieber scammed Coachella out of $10 million to play songs off of YouTube…” one person wrote.

Another added, “Justin Bieber giving us one of the laziest performances of all time.”

A third piled on, “If Sabrina Carpenter did what Justin Bieber is doing right now, her career would be over.”

The comparison to Carpenter, who headlined the first night of the California festival with a polished, high-production show complete with celebrity cameos, only intensified the criticism.

Bieber’s set, which kicked off at 11:25 p.m. local time, had already been rumored to be delayed due to desert winds, but he hit the stage on time

The screen also featured viral clips, including his own “is it not clocking to you” moment when he clashed with paparazzi, as well as classic memes like “deez nuts” and “double rainbow,” adding to the chaotic feel of the set.

“Justin Bieber is the worse(sic) headliner at Coachella in history because wtf your(sic) just sitting with a laptop,” one viewer posted.

Another went even further: “justin bieber 2026 coachella performance may just be the worst mass streamed/televised performance…ever?”

Some defended Bieber, pointing out that using YouTube was “a little iconic” since “Justin became famous” through the platform.

One X user dubbed him a “mastermind” — but acknowledged “some won’t understand.”

In an attempt to engage the audience, Bieber asked fans to “help me with the songs tonight,” encouraging them to drop their favorites into the livestream comments.

He then pulled from those suggestions in real time, further leaning into the improvised nature of the show.

One of the more unexpected moments came when Bieber dug up his own past, playing YouTube clips of himself as a child — including a nearly two-decade-old cover of a Ne-Yo song — which famously helped lead to his discovery by Usher and Scooter Braun.

Bieber reportedly secured his Coachella deal directly with Goldenvoice, earning $5 million per weekend, without the help of an agent.

The move followed his split from longtime manager Braun in 2023 after roughly 15 years.

Bieber is no stranger to Coachella, having previously appeared as a surprise guest alongside stars like Ariana Grande, Chance the Rapper, Daniel Caesar and Tems.

But this marked his first time topping the bill — and for many fans, it didn’t live up to the hype.

Police Investigate Crime Syndicate Behind Notorious ‘Kill Car’ on the Loose

Authorities are delving into the possibility that a group was contracted for an underworld assassination attempt outside the Wenty Leagues club in Wentworthville.

Police intercepted a reportedly stolen Audi after pursuing it from Wentworthville to Lidcombe along the Great Western Highway.

More details have been revealed about three young men caught driving in an alleged "kill car" that was rammed after a high-speed chase in Sydney.Detectives are investigating whether the crew was hired to carry out an underworld hit outside the Wenty Leagues club in Wentworthville.

In the aftermath, three individuals were apprehended, including 28-year-old Dean Saunders and 24-year-old Chayce Jensen. They have been charged with firearms offenses and involvement in a criminal organization.

The Raptor squad launched a search for the men after they were allegedly seen wearing balaclavas inside a white Audi parked at Wenty Leagues around 2 PM the previous day.

Detectives are currently investigating whether the group intended to execute a gangland hit, given the pistol and rifle reportedly discovered in the stolen vehicle.

The car is linked to several underworld shooting and fire bombings across south-west Sydney.

That includes a shooting on March 14, a firebombing on March 20 and another drive-by last Tuesday on the same Panania house.

On the same night police alleged the stolen car was used in shootings at Colyton and St John’s Park.

9News is not suggesting those arrested are involved in these other crimes.

Police say the target who lives at the house in Panania is linked to the G7 gang.

Members of this gang are often young men who are hired by heavyweight criminals to carry out underworld contracts.

The three accused didn’t apply for bail in court today but plan to in coming weeks.

9News understands they don’t have any strong links to any criminal groups and police allege they are a crime crew for hire.

The Audi is being forensically examined and investigators say it could have been used by a number of different criminals for dozens of underworld jobs.

Shocking Revelation: Husband Shares Critical Error in Phone Call About Missing Lynette Hooker

0

The husband who has been taken into custody following his wife’s mysterious disappearance in the Bahamas recounted the night’s events as a “series of mishaps,” confessing that he “struggles to explain” the incident during a candid phone conversation with a friend.

Brian Hooker, aged 59, is currently under questioning by Caribbean authorities after reporting that his wife, Lynette, 55, went overboard from a small dinghy while they were heading back to their yacht on April 4.

“It was a series of mishaps, and it’s something I will never be able to forgive myself for,” Hooker revealed during a call to a friend on April 7, which CBS News has confirmed.

“We lingered too long, departed when it was too dark, just a lot of things,” Hooker said in a composed tone.

Brian also acknowledged his oversight in not securing the dinghy properly.

“I f–king threw the anchor out last, instead of first,” he told his pal.

“Can’t really explain it, you know. I just know that I hate this boat and if she doesn’t come back, I’m never getting on this f–king boat and I’m gonna sell this f–ker,” he said.

He also admitted that the pair, from Michigan, did not bring their life jackets.

US-Iran Ceasefire Negotiations Conclude Without Agreement Amid Mutual Accusations

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The United States and Iran concluded direct negotiations on Sunday without reaching an agreement, casting uncertainty over the ongoing two-week ceasefire.

U.S. representatives attributed the breakdown in talks to Iran’s unwillingness to pledge against pursuing nuclear weapons. In contrast, Iranian officials pointed fingers at the U.S. for the impasse, though they did not provide specific details about the disagreements.

With the ceasefire scheduled to end on April 22, both sides have yet to clarify their next steps. Pakistani mediators have urged all parties to uphold the ceasefire. Each side maintains that their stance is clear, putting the responsibility on the other, highlighting the limited progress made during the discussions.

“We require a clear commitment from them that they will neither pursue a nuclear weapon nor acquire the means to rapidly develop one,” Vice President JD Vance stated after the marathon 21-hour talks.

Leading the Iranian delegation, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf remarked that it is up to the United States to determine if it can earn Iran’s trust.

He did not mention the core disputes in a series of social media posts, though Iranian officials earlier said the talks fell apart over two or three key issues, blaming what they called U.S. overreach.

Iran has long denied seeking nuclear weapons but has insisted on its right to a civilian nuclear program. It has offered “affirmative commitments” in the past in writing, including in the landmark 2015 nuclear deal. Experts say its stockpile of enriched uranium, though not weapons-grade, is only a short technical step away.

Since the U.S. and Israel launched the war on Feb. 28, it has killed at least 3,000 people in Iran, 2,020 in Lebanon, 23 in Israel and more than a dozen in Gulf Arab states, and caused lasting damage to infrastructure in half a dozen Middle Eastern countries. Iran’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz has largely cut off the Persian Gulf and its oil and gas exports from the global economy, sending energy prices soaring.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said his country will try to facilitate a new dialogue between Iran and the U.S. in the coming days.

“It is imperative that the parties continue to uphold their commitment to cease fire,” Dar said.

The deadlock — and Vance’s take-it-or-leave-it proposal that Iran end its nuclear program — mirrored February’s nuclear talks in Switzerland. Though President Donald Trump has said the subsequent war was meant to compel Iran’s leaders to abandon nuclear ambitions, each side’s positions appeared unchanged in negotiations following six weeks of fighting.

An Iranian diplomatic official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the closed-door talks, denied that negotiations had failed over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

“Iran is not seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, but it has the right to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes,” they said, reiterating Iran’s longstanding negotiating position.

There was no word on whether they would resume, though Iran said it was open to continuing the dialogue, Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported.

“We have never sought war. But if they try to win what they failed to win on the battlefield through talks, that’s absolutely unacceptable,” 60-year-old Mohammad Bagher Karami said in downtown Tehran.

US moves to shift status quo in Strait of Hormuz

The United States and Iran entered talks with sharply different proposals and contrasting assumptions about their leverage to end the war. Before negotiations began, the ceasefire was already threatened by deep disagreements and Israel’s continued attacks against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iran’s 10-point proposal ahead of the talks called for a guaranteed end to the war and sought control over the Strait of Hormuz. It included ending fighting against Iran’s “regional allies,” explicitly calling for a halt to Israeli strikes on Hezbollah.

Pakistani officials told The Associated Press in March that the U.S. 15-point proposal included monitoring mechanisms and a rollback of Iran’s nuclear program. Speaking on condition of anonymity as they weren’t authorized to discuss details, they said it also covered reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Indeed, Iran’s closure of the strait has proved its biggest strategic advantage in the war. Around a fifth of the world’s traded oil had typically passed through on over 100 ships a day.

During the talks, the U.S. military said two destroyers transited the critical waterway ahead of mine-clearing work, a first since the war began. Iran’s state media, however, reported the country’s joint military command denied that.

“We’re sweeping the strait. Whether we make a deal or not makes no difference to me,” Trump said as talks extended into early Sunday morning.

Israel presses ahead in Lebanon

The impasse raises new questions about fighting in Lebanon. Israel has pressed ahead with strikes since the ceasefire was announced, saying the agreement did not apply there. Iran and Pakistan claimed otherwise.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported six people were killed Sunday morning in an Israeli strike in Maaroub, a village near the southern coastal city of Tyre. Though Israel’s strikes over Beirut have calmed in recent days, its attacks on southern Lebanon have intensified alongside a ground invasion it renewed after Hezbollah launched rockets toward Israel in the opening days of the Iran war.

Negotiations between Israel and Lebanon are expected to begin Tuesday in Washington, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun’s office has said, after Israel’s surprise announcement authorizing talks despite the lack of official relations between the countries. Protests erupted in Beirut on Saturday over the planned negotiations.

Israel wants Lebanon’s government to assume responsibility for disarming Hezbollah, much like was envisaged in a November 2024 ceasefire. But the militant group has survived efforts to curb its strength for decades.

The day the Iran ceasefire deal was announced, Israel pounded Beirut with airstrikes, killing more than 300 people in the deadliest day in Lebanon since the war began, according to the country’s Health Ministry.

Mississippi Unveils Comprehensive Historical Narrative for America’s Anniversary Year, Diverging from Federal Initiatives

0

In Jackson, Mississippi, the solemn presence of the Lynching Victims Monolith stands as a poignant reminder of the state’s tumultuous past. These unadorned glass panels bear the names of over 600 individuals who fell victim to racially motivated killings in Mississippi, with the motives behind these heinous acts clearly etched alongside.

Among the tragic stories is that of Malcolm Wright, who was brutally beaten to death in front of his family in 1949. His alleged crime was “hogging the road,” as his mule-drawn wagon moved too slowly for his attackers’ liking. This incident is just one of the many documented within the monolith’s somber records.

The monolith is part of a larger collection of exhibits and artifacts housed within the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and the adjacent Museum of Mississippi History. Together, these institutions, known as the Two Mississippi Museums, form a significant landmark in the shadow of the state Capitol, playing a pivotal role in Mississippi’s America 250 celebration.

As visitors reflect on the displays, the emotional weight is palpable. Kiama Johnson, a visitor from Monroe, Louisiana, sat quietly, overwhelmed by the names inscribed on the panels. “That’s just the people that we know about,” she remarked, tears welling in her eyes. “Imagine the ones we don’t know, the stories that will never find their place in history books.”

This unflinching portrayal of Mississippi’s history is a part of the state’s official effort to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary. It stands in stark contrast to the national narrative that has evolved since President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025, where such candid reflections are often absent.

Easing the discomfort of a sometimes brutal American history has been a central theme of Trump’s administration. He signed an executive order his first day back in office eliminating diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in the federal government. That, along with a March 2025 executive order, ” Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” have led to signs being changed at federal parks, exhibits being altered or in some cases removed, and military bases being renamed.

Part of the Republican administration’s preparations to celebrate the 250th anniversary have included putting pressure on federal institutions, including the Smithsonian, to tell a version of history that is less focused on discrimination and episodes of racial violence.

In Mississippi, a temporary exhibit created specifically for the commemoration — Mississippi Made — fills a space that is routinely changed to entice visitors to return. But it is housed in a space where achievement is intertwined with the state’s dark past involving Native Americans, enslaved people and the Civil Rights era.

Nan Prince, director of collections for the Mississippi Department of Archives & History, said the instructions were simple from scholars, politicians, staff members, and civic and civil rights groups when the museums were being conceived and built.

“Don’t brush over anything, don’t whitewash anything,” she said. “Just tell the absolute truth.”

‘We weren’t going to hide anything’

Jackson Mayor John Horhn was a state senator when he began pushing for the Civil Rights Museum in 1999. His efforts finally got a boost when Haley Barbour, a former Republican National Committee chairman, became governor.

Plans for the museum eventually were combined with a parallel effort to move the state history museum from the Capitol grounds, with the complex opening in 2017.

The approach to creating a state history museum was the same — tell the full story, beginning with how Native Americans were removed from the land.

“We said at the beginning we weren’t going to hide anything,” Barbour said in an interview, noting that he grew up in an era of segregation. “We weren’t gonna try to justify what was done. That’s what the people wanted — to say, ‘Look, we’re not proud of this, but we’re not going to deny it.’”

Other states have made sure to highlight their diversity in their presentations for the 250th anniversary. The America 250 description for neighboring Alabama includes milestones in the Civil Rights Movement.

Mississippi takes its history head-on. Its “America 250 MS” platform says the state’s history mirrors the American story, with the removal of Native Americans making way for slavery and slavery leading to the Civil War, followed by Reconstruction and the Jim Crow era.

Horhn praised the willingness of Mississippi leaders to use the museums to tell the state’s full story.

“We still have issues, we still have a lot of challenges,” he said. “But it’s a demonstration that progress has been made.”

‘It just made me want to weep’

The History Museum opens into a gallery that explores Mississippi’s first people, the Native Americans. The entrance is dominated by a 500-year-old canoe, a vivid reminder that Native Americans were here thousands of years before settlers arrived and forced them out, taking the land to begin growing cotton, which was tended by enslaved people.

Across the lobby sits the Civil Rights Museum. The first audio exhibit is abrupt: “We don’t serve your kind,” a menacing voice tells visitors, triggered when they cross the museum threshold.

It is one of several phrases once commonplace in the nation’s segregated past that bombard visitors at the opening to the gallery.

The museum also does not shy away from presenting one of the state’s most infamous racial killings, that of Emmett Till. The 14-year-old was kidnapped, tortured and killed in 1955 after being accused of whistling at a white woman in a rural Mississippi grocery store.

Till’s murder was a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement. Thousands came to his funeral in Chicago, and his mother, Mamie Till Mobley, insisted on an open casket so the country could see the gruesome state of her son’s body.

At the end of the narrative, by Oprah Winfrey, visitors can see the .45-caliber pistol used to kill the teenager.

Lindsay Ward, 49, cried in the lobby after touring the Civil Rights Museum. Raised in what she described as a sheltered world in Salt Lake City, she said she had not had any exposure to the topics she encountered during her visit — “this heaviness,” as she put it.

Ward, now living in Denver, said she was troubled by how recent some events were.

“We’re not talking about hundreds and hundreds of years ago. We’re talking 60 years. It just made me want to weep,” she said. “It doesn’t feel great, but it’s important we understand what happened in the past.”

Connor Lynch, a history teacher and social justice advocate from Chicago, said deciding how history will be told has always been a struggle.

“All we have is human narrative” and that comes with bias, he said. “I do believe that no matter what sort of erasure the country might be doing, we know the stories. We know the truth.”

‘A very difficult history,’ on full display

For the America 250 celebration, the museums created ”Mississippi Made,” which highlights the state’s products and achievements.

There is the common household cleaner Pine-Sol, a Nissan Frontier and a Toyota Corolla, a section citing the state’s involvement in the U.S. space program and medical advances such as the first human lung transplant.

There is something else — a display by renowned Mississippi quilter Hystercine Rankin. It is a quilt telling the story of her father being killed in 1939.

Jessica Walzer, the exhibit curator, said she included it because it is one of the few story quilts in the museums’ collection and because it tells part of Mississippi’s history.

“I think it’s important to have something kind of striking like that to kind of remind us that Mississippi also has this very difficult history that a lot of people have been through,” she said.

Prince, the state director of collections, said such truth had long been denied. Visitors to antebellum homes, for instance, heard about the families who lived there, but “they would never once tell you about the people that lived behind the house or the people that built the house or the people that worked the fields,” she said.

“For so long,” she said, “we just tried to gloss over that because it was uncomfortable.”

Authorities Discover Malnourished 9-Year-Old Locked in Van in Hagenbach, France

0

In a shocking revelation from eastern France, a 9-year-old boy has been freed after spending years confined to his father’s utility van. Local authorities have confirmed that the child has been taken to a hospital, while his father is now in police custody.

Residents in the village of Hagenbach, located near the Swiss and German borders, raised the alarm after hearing “sounds of a child” emanating from a van earlier this week. This prompted a swift response from the police, as detailed in a statement released on Saturday by prosecutor Nicolas Heitz.

Upon investigating, officers forced entry into the vehicle, uncovering a distressing scene. The boy was found curled up in a fetal position, unclothed, and covered only by a blanket amidst piles of trash and human waste. Heitz noted that the child was severely malnourished and had lost the ability to walk, having been confined to a seated position for an extended period.

During questioning, the boy’s father claimed he locked his son in the van back in November 2024. He alleged that his actions were meant to “protect him,” as his partner had intended to admit the child to a psychiatric facility when he was just 7 years old.

However, prosecutor Heitz stated that there is no medical evidence to support any psychiatric issues in the boy’s history. Furthermore, the child was reportedly performing well academically prior to his disappearance.

The boy told investigators that he had “big difficulties” with his father’s partner and thought his father “had no choice” but to lock him up, according to the prosecutor. He said he hadn’t showered since 2024.

The father was handed preliminary kidnapping and other charges and kept in custody. His partner denied knowledge that the boy was in the van, according to the prosecutor. She was handed preliminary charges, including for failure to help a minor in danger, and released under judicial supervision.

The boy’s 12-year-old sister and the 10-year-old daughter of his father’s partner were placed in the care of social services.

The prosecutor’s office is investigating whether others were aware of the boy’s detention.

Friends and family told investigators they thought the boy was in a psychiatric institution. His teachers were told he had transferred to a different school, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The authorities have not released the names of the victim or his relatives.

Hagenbach residents contacted by The Associated Press expressed shock on Saturday over the cases and said they were unaware of the boy’s whereabouts, but didn’t want to discuss details.

The prosecutor declined to comment further to AP pending further investigation.

Roommate Intrigued by the Details of My Active Romantic Life

0

Dear Jane,

My living situation has become quite uncomfortable due to my roommate’s persistent questions about my sex life. Her inquiries have crossed a line, making it difficult to coexist peacefully.

What complicates matters further is that she’s a virgin. While I respect everyone’s personal choices regarding their sexual experiences, her intense curiosity, stemming from her own abstinence, is beginning to feel intrusive.

Personally, I maintain what many would describe as a healthy sex life. Unfortunately, I sometimes forget just how thin the walls of our apartment are, which seems to fuel her curiosity even more.

You see, I have what one might consider a healthy sex life and, on some occasions, I forget just how thin our walls are.

Right on cue, my roommate will bound into my room the next morning (once my boyfriend leaves) and make comments about how much ‘fun’ it seems we had and ask for all the ‘juicy details.’

I can’t blame her for being interested in what she hasn’t experienced.

But it is starting to feel intrusive, and has got to the point that my boyfriend no longer feels comfortable staying the night if she’s also in the apartment.

She’s a bit shy and doesn’t have many friends, so I’m afraid that if I say something to her, I’ll hurt her feelings and make her shut down.

I just don’t know if I can keep living with someone who doesn’t understand that their behavior has become inappropriate.

Sincerely,

Freaky Friend

Dear Freaky Friend,

It always both astonishes and saddens me that we are given no road maps for how to talk to friends when they behave in ways that make us uncomfortable.

It’s easy to tell our partners and often members of our family, that their behavior has upset us in some way, but when it comes to friends – and in this case a roommate -we have no idea what to say, so we say nothing at all, and resentment builds until one of us has to go.

As hard as this may be to hear, it’s not up to her to magically read your mind and figure out how mortifying this all is for you. She likely has no idea how her curiosity is affecting you. It’s up to you to set the boundary.

You’re worried it will shut her down. But, in the meantime, you are being shut down and you have the right to some privacy.

And for the record, this has little to do with her virginity, but more to do with her crossing a boundary, with no one telling her how inappropriate it is.

Happily, the fix is an easy one. Difficult conversations should always be framed as: I felt X when you did Y. In your case, I feel uncomfortable when you let me know you’ve been listening to what my boyfriend and I do, and then ask for the “juicy details.” You are also allowed to request that she no longer does it.

Failing all that, perhaps a white noise machine would make an excellent gift for her birthday.

International best-selling author Jane Green offers sage advice on readers’ most burning issues in her agony aunt column

Dear Jane,

I love my fiancé but I can’t stand his children.

But most of all, I can’t stand how he’s raising them.

They don’t have any manners, and they treat me horribly.

When they’re rude to me, or him, he just says nothing.

I’ve tried really hard to make them happy: I make all their favorite food, and am constantly thinking of activities they’ll love.

They never say thank you and most of the time they refuse to eat my food, just because I’m the one who’s cooked it.

So, my fiancé just gets up from the table and makes them chicken nuggets.

He wants us to be this big happy family, but he won’t intervene and talk to them. I’m getting really tired of trying to do the right thing and getting treated like I’m the interloper.

I love my future husband but I just don’t know if I can keep doing this.

Sincerely,

Struggling Stepmom

Dear Struggling Stepmom,

So many of us find the men we love and look forward to step-parenting with open hearts, dreaming of somehow creating the perfect new family unit. We think that all the children need is unconditional love and they will come to accept and love us, even if they don’t at the beginning.

But that is often not the case.

I have seen women, myself included, twist themselves into pretzels in order to make stepchildren happy. The truth is, it really doesn’t matter what we do – we are fighting something bigger than us.

Plus, making their favourite food and doing everything for them seems like it might make them accept you, but in fact, it is giving them all the power.

Healthier is for you to step away. Rather than your fiancé leaving the table at every mealtime, perhaps you make them chicken nuggets. Or, stop cooking for them. Have your husband make them the food he wants.

Focus on your marriage and your peace. You will never be their mother and trying to act like one usually doesn’t bring us the results we want.

Nor can you expect your fiancé to defend you, (which would be the right thing to do). Often men caught between a new wife and their children, feel torn. So they do as your fiancé is doing and say nothing, leaving you feeling abandoned and lonely.

What you can do, is set your own boundary. If the children are rude, tell them, kindly, that you won’t be spoken to like that, and that you are going to remove yourself until they can be polite.

Then, remove yourself. Go and run yourself a hot bath, or go for a walk with a girlfriend.

This may not ever change. A huge percentage of second marriages fail because of issues with stepchildren, and ex’s. If this is the man for you, you need to forge your own relationship with him and stop bending over backwards to try and make his kids like you.

Maybe they will, maybe they won’t, but you do not have to take it. You cannot presume that this will get better over time, but you can protect your peace.

Jane’s Sunday Service

Most people will treat us as badly as we allow them to.

We are often horrified at their behvior and respond by simply walking away from friendships and relationships, aghast at how people have acted.

But they can’t themselves inside your head. They may not share your feelings but they certainly have no way of knowing them – unless we tell them.

The 45-year-old actress, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, shared how the Princess of Wales, 44, resonated with her experiences. The Princess had her own health scare, being diagnosed with an undisclosed illness in 2024, before announcing her remission the following year. Her insights on post-treatment life struck a deep chord with Munn.

In an interview with People, Munn, who is currently in recovery, expressed her gratitude for the Princess’s candidness. “Kate Middleton recently spoke on this topic, and her words really touched me,” Munn revealed. “She articulated something I had struggled to express, giving me a newfound peace.”

Munn continued, paraphrasing the Princess’s wisdom: “She said, ‘You might think the major challenges are what you need to brace for, but it’s actually the aftermath of treatment that’s truly demanding and difficult.’ Hearing that someone else felt the same way was incredibly validating.”

“She was like, ‘You think that the big things are the things you have to worry about’ – I’m paraphrasing her – ‘But it’s the treatment after you’ve gone through the big things that’s really taxing and hard on you.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, somebody else if feeling that.’”

The Your Friends and Neighbors star added: “That’s where it feels really good… when you hear other people’s experiences, because it is true – you feel so much better when you know you’re not alone.”

Olivia’s comments refer to Catherine discussing the challenge of finding a “new normal” after cancer treatment on a visit to Colchester Hospital last July.

The princess said: “You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment. Treatment’s done, then it’s like, ‘I can crack on, get back to normal’, but actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult.

“You have to find your new normal, and that takes time – and it’s a roller coaster, it’s not smooth, like you except it to be. But the reality is you go through hard times.”

Munn underwent multiple surgeries after being diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of breast cancer and admits taking lots of medication in the aftermath has been challenging.

The Newsroom actress said: “I’ve been open about this, that with breast cancer, there’s so much medication afterwards for certain people.

“And for someone like me – and the type of breast cancer I had, and how aggressive it was, and for the age I am, and not having been premenopausal when I was diagnosed – there’s so many more medications I have to take. And there are a lot of side effects and they have been really hard on me.”

Olivia continued: “I guess I was hard on myself because I would ask other friends who were on the same treatment plan as me if they’d had any of my symptoms, and none of them did. Not one person said that they had exhaustion or mood swings or body aches. I thought, ‘I’m the only one getting this.’”

Conquer Urinary Incontinence Quickly: Top At-Home Remedies for Immediate Relief

0

If you’ve ever laughed a bit too hard and felt an unwelcome dampness, or dashed to the bathroom only to fall short, you’re familiar with how disruptive bladder leaks can be. According to the American Urological Association, urinary incontinence affects between 25% and 45% of women in the United States. Yet, many endure it quietly, believing it’s an inevitable part of aging. But this doesn’t have to be the case.

There are genuine and effective solutions, ranging from quick muscle tricks to long-term lifestyle changes supported by clinical studies, that can help you regain control and confidence. This guide explores these solutions, delving into the root causes of the issue, the powerful “Knack” technique, the correct way to perform Kegel exercises, dietary changes that can make a noticeable impact, and when it’s crucial to consult a specialist.

How To Stop Urinary Incontinence Fast With Easy At-Home Treatments

What Causes Urinary Incontinence? A Doctor Explains the Root of the Problem

Before seeking a remedy, it’s important to understand what’s occurring inside your body. The bladder, a muscular sac, holds urine until the brain signals that it’s time to release it. Leakage occurs when this communication system falters or when the muscles around the bladder weaken or become overly active.

“Urinary incontinence happens when the systems that keep the bladder shut are either overwhelmed or fail to function efficiently,” explains Samantha Pulliam, MD, FACOG, a urogynecologist and chief medical officer at Axena Health. “This may result from weakened pelvic floor muscles, nerve damage, hormonal shifts, or a mix of various factors.”

The Four Main Types You Should Know

Not all bladder leaks are identical, and identifying the type is crucial in determining the most effective treatment strategy.

  • Stress incontinence occurs when physical pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or jumping, pushes urine past a weakened urethral sphincter. This is the most common type, particularly in women who have given birth or gone through menopause.
  • Urge incontinence involves a sudden, intense need to urinate that is difficult to suppress, often caused by an overactive bladder muscle (the detrusor). Many people with this type leak before they can reach a toilet.
  • Mixed incontinence is exactly what it sounds like: a combination of both stress and urge incontinence, which affects a significant number of women.
  • Overflow incontinence happens when the bladder never fully empties, leading to constant dribbling. This is more common in men with prostate issues but can affect women too.

Why Women Are Disproportionately Affected

Pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause create a perfect storm for pelvic floor dysfunction. During vaginal delivery, the muscles, nerves, and connective tissue supporting the bladder can stretch or tear. Estrogen, which helps maintain urethral tissue thickness and tone, declines significantly during menopause, making the urethra less able to stay tightly closed. Add years of high-impact activity or chronic constipation to the picture, and the pelvic floor gradually loses its ability to hold everything in place.

Dr. Pulliam also points out that anatomical structure plays a role: women have a shorter urethra than men, which means there is simply less length between the bladder and the outside world. That shorter pathway makes continence more dependent on the strength of the surrounding muscles.

‘The Knack’: The Instant Fix for Urinary Incontinence That Works Right Now

Most solutions for urinary incontinence take weeks to show results. The Knack is the exception. It is a technique that works immediately, on the very first attempt, and requires nothing more than knowing how to contract one specific muscle group at the right moment.

How the Knack Works

The concept is straightforward: you voluntarily contract your pelvic floor muscles just before and during any activity that increases abdominal pressure. Sneezing, coughing, picking up a heavy object, laughing, or jumping are all triggers. By preemptively squeezing the muscles that surround the urethra, you counteract the sudden rise in intra-abdominal pressure before it forces urine out.

Research published in the Journal of Urology found that women who consistently used voluntary pelvic floor muscle contraction before coughing reduced stress incontinence episodes by up to 98.2 percent, compared to a 73.3 percent reduction in the control group. The researchers called it a highly effective behavioral strategy with immediate impact.

The ‘Squeeze Before You Sneeze’ Trick, Step by Step

The Knack has earned a simpler, more memorable name in popular health circles: the “squeeze before you sneeze” trick. Here is how to use it correctly.

  1. Anticipate the trigger. The moment you feel a cough, sneeze, or laugh coming on, or when you are about to lift something heavy, that is your cue.
  2. Contract your pelvic floor muscles upward and inward. Think of it as stopping the flow of urine mid-stream. Squeeze those muscles firmly, not your buttocks or thighs.
  3. Hold the contraction through the duration of the pressure event. Keep squeezing while you cough or sneeze, not after.
  4. Release and relax. Let the muscles fully release once the pressure passes.

With practice, this becomes automatic, almost like a reflex. Many women report that within a week of conscious practice, the squeeze happens instinctively before they even consciously think about it.

Why Timing Matters More Than Force

One of the most common mistakes is squeezing too late, after the cough or sneeze has already begun. By then, the pressure wave has already reached the urethra. The key is proactive engagement, not reactive. You are essentially getting ahead of the pressure, not chasing it.

Kegels Strengthen Your Pelvic Floor to Stop Bladder Leaks for Good

While the Knack offers an immediate fix in the moment, Kegel exercises deliver lasting structural improvement. They strengthen the very muscles responsible for urethral closure, bladder support, and pelvic organ positioning. Done correctly and consistently, they can dramatically reduce or even eliminate urinary incontinence over time.

Finding the Right Muscles: The Step Most People Skip

The biggest barrier to effective Kegel exercises is not commitment. It is anatomy. Studies suggest that up to 30 percent of women perform Kegels incorrectly on their first attempt, often bearing down instead of lifting up, which can actually worsen symptoms.

To identify the correct muscles, try stopping your urine mid-stream the next time you use the bathroom. The muscles you use to do that are your pelvic floor muscles. Do not make a habit of stopping urine flow regularly, as this can interfere with normal bladder function, but use it once as a targeting exercise. Another approach is to imagine you are trying to prevent yourself from passing gas. The subtle internal lift and squeeze that results targets the right muscle group.

The Correct Kegel Technique

Once you have identified the muscles, follow this protocol:

  • Contract the pelvic floor muscles firmly, lifting them upward and inward.
  • Hold the contraction for 3 to 5 seconds at first, working up to 10 seconds over several weeks.
  • Release completely and allow the muscles to fully relax for an equal amount of time.
  • Repeat 10 to 15 times per set, aiming for three sets per day.

Consistency is the determining factor. A systematic review in the British Journal of General Practice confirmed that pelvic floor muscle training, performed regularly over 12 weeks, significantly reduced the frequency and volume of urinary leakage in women with stress, urge, and mixed incontinence.

Fast-Twitch vs. Slow-Twitch Contractions: Training Both Matters

The pelvic floor contains two types of muscle fibers, and targeting both makes your training more complete.

  • Slow-twitch fibers support endurance and posture. These are trained with long, sustained holds of 8 to 10 seconds. They are responsible for the background tone that keeps the urethra closed during everyday activities.
  • Fast-twitch fibers generate rapid, forceful contractions. These respond to sudden pressure events like coughing and sneezing. Train them with quick, sharp contractions followed by immediate full release, repeating 10 to 15 times in rapid succession.

Most standard Kegel routines only train the slow-twitch fibers. Incorporating fast-twitch work, especially before anticipated high-pressure activities, significantly improves the Knack technique over time.

When to Expect Results

Most women notice meaningful improvement within 6 to 12 weeks of consistent daily practice. For those with moderate to severe stress incontinence, the timeline may extend to 16 weeks. The key word in both cases is consistent. Doing Kegels three times a week will not produce the same results as doing them daily.

Dietary Tweaks for Treating Urinary Incontinence: What You Eat Affects Your Bladder

The connection between diet and bladder health is more direct than most people realize. Certain foods and beverages actively irritate the bladder lining or increase urine production, amplifying leakage symptoms. Removing or reducing them, while adding bladder-supportive nutrients, can produce noticeable results within days.

The Bladder Irritants Worth Cutting Back

The following are among the most well-documented dietary triggers for bladder urgency and increased leak frequency:

  • Caffeine acts as both a diuretic, increasing urine volume, and a direct bladder irritant that stimulates urgency. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, and even dark chocolate fall into this category. Reducing intake by even 25 percent can reduce urge episodes significantly.
  • Alcohol relaxes the urethral sphincter, impairs the brain’s ability to recognize bladder fullness, and increases urine output. Even moderate consumption has been linked to worsened symptoms.
  • Carbonated drinks, including sparkling water, can irritate the bladder wall. The carbonation itself appears to be a contributing factor, independent of caffeine content.
  • Artificial sweeteners, particularly aspartame and saccharin, have been reported by many patients to trigger urgency, though individual sensitivity varies.
  • Acidic foods and drinks, such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, vinegar-based sauces, and spicy food, are common culprits for bladder urgency and burning.

An elimination approach works well here. Remove the most likely irritants for two weeks, then reintroduce them one at a time to identify personal triggers.

The Role of Hydration: Less Is Not More

It might seem logical to drink less water if you are dealing with bladder leaks. In fact, the opposite is often true. Concentrated, dark urine is more irritating to the bladder lining than diluted urine, and chronic under-hydration increases urgency by keeping a smaller volume of highly concentrated urine in the bladder at all times.

Aim for pale yellow urine as your hydration benchmark. The National Association for Continence recommends consuming approximately 6 to 8 cups of fluid daily for most adults with incontinence, spread evenly throughout the day rather than drinking large amounts at once. Reducing fluids in the two to three hours before bed can also help manage nocturia, the nighttime trips to the bathroom that disrupt sleep.

Magnesium and Bladder Calm

Some research suggests that magnesium supplementation may help reduce bladder muscle overactivity associated with urge incontinence. One clinical study found that magnesium hydroxide reduced nocturia and urge incontinence episodes in women compared to placebo. Foods high in magnesium include leafy green vegetables, legumes, seeds, and whole grains, making a dietary approach both accessible and broadly beneficial.

Fiber for Pelvic Floor Health

Chronic constipation is a less-discussed contributor to urinary incontinence. Straining during bowel movements increases intra-abdominal pressure repeatedly over time, gradually weakening the pelvic floor. A high-fiber diet that promotes regular, easy bowel movements reduces this ongoing stress on the supporting muscles. The recommended daily fiber intake is 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men, yet most adults consume fewer than 16 grams per day.

More Easy Lifestyle Fixes That Actually Help

Beyond exercises and diet, several practical behavioral and lifestyle strategies have strong evidence behind them for reducing bladder leaks.

Bladder Training: Teaching Your Bladder Who Is in Charge

Bladder training is a structured behavioral approach designed to gradually extend the intervals between bathroom trips, reducing urgency and increasing capacity over time. It works particularly well for urge incontinence and overactive bladder.

The process starts with tracking your current bathroom habits in a bladder diary for a few days. Once you establish your baseline frequency, you begin deliberately waiting slightly longer than usual before urinating, even when you feel the urge. You add a few minutes to your interval each week, progressively training the bladder to hold more without triggering an emergency signal. Most programs aim to reach a comfortable voiding interval of three to four hours over a period of six to twelve weeks.

When an urge hits during the waiting period, urge suppression techniques help: cross your legs, sit down quietly, perform a few rapid pelvic floor contractions (which sends a neurological signal that suppresses urgency), or distract your attention for a minute. The urge will often pass without requiring an immediate bathroom trip.

Weight Management: A Measurable Impact

Excess body weight places constant downward pressure on the bladder and pelvic floor. Research consistently shows that a weight loss of just 5 to 10 percent of body weight can reduce stress urinary incontinence episodes by 50 to 60 percent. A landmark study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that overweight and obese women who lost a modest amount of weight through a structured program experienced significantly fewer weekly incontinence episodes than those in the control group.

Quit Smoking for More Than the Obvious Reasons

Smoking causes chronic coughing, and chronic coughing is one of the most repetitive stress loads placed on the pelvic floor. Every cough forces pressure downward through the abdomen, gradually fatiguing and weakening the muscles that keep the bladder closed. Additionally, nicotine is a bladder stimulant that can increase urgency. Quitting smoking reduces coughing-related pelvic stress and removes a direct chemical irritant from the bladder equation.

Clothing and Toilet Habits That Work Against You

Some habits unknowingly perpetuate incontinence. These include:

  • Going “just in case”: Frequently emptying the bladder before it is truly full trains it to signal urgency at lower volumes. Over time, bladder capacity shrinks. Unless you have a specific reason, wait until you genuinely need to go.
  • Hovering over public toilet seats: This position prevents full pelvic floor relaxation, which means the bladder never fully empties. Sitting fully, or using a toilet seat cover if hygiene is a concern, allows complete voiding.
  • Tight waistbands and compression garments: Anything that applies sustained pressure to the abdomen can provoke urgency. Loose-fitting clothing around the midsection gives the bladder more space to expand without pressure.

When to See a Doctor for Urinary Incontinence Treatment

Self-management strategies are effective for many people, but there are situations where professional evaluation is not only helpful, it is necessary.

Signs That Professional Care Is the Right Next Step

Schedule an appointment with a doctor, ideally a urogynecologist or pelvic floor specialist, if any of the following apply:

  • Bladder leaks are occurring daily or are significantly affecting your quality of life, social activities, or sleep
  • You have tried pelvic floor exercises and dietary changes for at least 12 weeks without meaningful improvement
  • You are experiencing pelvic pain, painful urination, or blood in the urine alongside leakage
  • You have a sudden or rapid onset of incontinence without an obvious cause
  • You feel a sensation of pelvic heaviness, pressure, or bulging, which may indicate pelvic organ prolapse
  • Leakage is associated with incomplete bladder emptying or a weak urine stream

These symptoms may indicate underlying conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse, urinary tract infections, interstitial cystitis, or neurological issues that require targeted treatment beyond behavioral strategies.

What Medical Treatment Looks Like

A urogynecologist like Dr. Pulliam will typically begin with a thorough history and physical exam, possibly including a bladder diary review, urinalysis, and urodynamic testing to understand how the bladder fills and empties under pressure. From there, treatment may include:

  • Pelvic floor physical therapy: A trained pelvic floor therapist provides hands-on assessment and a customized exercise program, using biofeedback to ensure muscles are activating correctly. This is significantly more effective than self-directed Kegels for many patients.
  • Medications: For urge incontinence, anticholinergic medications such as oxybutynin, or the newer beta-3 agonist mirabegron, help calm an overactive bladder muscle. These are not cures but can significantly reduce urgency and frequency.
  • Pessaries: A vaginal pessary is a removable silicone device inserted by a clinician to provide structural support to the urethra and bladder neck. It is a non-surgical option that works well for women with stress incontinence related to pelvic floor laxity.
  • Nerve stimulation: Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation and sacral neuromodulation are minimally invasive procedures that retrain the nerves controlling bladder function, often achieving excellent results for overactive bladder and urge incontinence.
  • Surgical options: Midurethral sling procedures are the most common surgical treatment for stress urinary incontinence. They involve placing a small strip of mesh under the urethra to provide support during physical activity. Success rates are high, with most studies reporting 80 to 90 percent improvement or cure at long-term follow-up.

The bottom line is that incontinence is a medical condition with a broad range of effective treatments, not a personal failing or an inevitable part of getting older. The right combination of self-care strategies and professional support can restore confidence, comfort, and control for the vast majority of people who experience it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can urinary incontinence be permanently cured? Many people achieve complete resolution of symptoms through a combination of pelvic floor training, behavioral strategies, and in some cases medical or surgical intervention. The outcome depends on the type and severity of incontinence, overall health, and how consistently treatment is followed.

How long does it take for Kegel exercises to work for incontinence? Most women notice a meaningful reduction in leakage within 6 to 12 weeks of daily Kegel practice. Significant or complete improvement may take up to 16 weeks. Consistency and correct technique are the most important factors.

Is urinary incontinence a normal part of aging? While the risk increases with age due to hormonal changes and muscle atrophy, incontinence is not an inevitable or untreatable part of aging. It responds well to treatment at every age.

What is the fastest fix for bladder leaks? The Knack technique, squeezing the pelvic floor muscles just before a cough, sneeze, or other pressure event, provides immediate relief and can reduce leakage episodes dramatically on the very first attempt.

When should I see a doctor about bladder leaks? See a doctor if leaks are occurring daily, disrupting your daily life or sleep, accompanied by pain or blood in the urine, or have not improved after 12 weeks of self-management strategies.
