Tragic Turn: Missing American Woman Identified After Fatal Fall During Bahamas Boat Ride

An American woman who vanished in the Bahamas after an accident during a boating excursion with her husband has been identified.

Lynette Hooker, a 55-year-old resident of Onsted, Michigan, fell into the waters of the Abaco Islands while she and her husband were on a boat trip from Hope Town to Elbow Cay this past Saturday.

Her husband, Brian Hooker, aged 58, informed the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBF) that they embarked on their journey at approximately 7:30 p.m. aboard an 8-foot dinghy.

The duo was en route to their yacht, named Soulmate, when Brian reported that Lynette slipped and fell overboard due to unfavorable weather conditions, according to Stafford Patterson, the Assistant Chief of Hope Town Volunteer Fire & Rescue, in an interview with ABC News.

The RBF noted that “strong currents subsequently carried her away, and [Brian] lost sight of her.”

Patterson added that it was unclear whether Lynette was wearing a life jacket. 

Police said the 55-year-old was holding the boat key when she fell, which caused the dinghy’s engine to shut off.

Brian then paddled the boat through the night, reaching a marina around 4am Sunday, according to Patterson. 

He told an individual at the marina what happened to his wife, who then contacted authorities, according to the RBPF. 

Bahamian and US authorities continue a joint search-and-rescue operation, with the US Coast Guard deploying an aircraft to aid the effort, Patterson said.

Lynette’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, released a statement on Monday about the incident.

‘I have been privy to very little information. My sole concern is to find out what happened to my mother and make sure a full and complete investigation is performed into her disappearance,’ she said.

‘While the Royal Bahamian police are investigating this matter, I would also appreciate any involvement of the federal, state or local authorities to look into the circumstances of this tragic situation,’ Aylesworth added.

However, this strategy faced criticism on Saturday when reports surfaced of an officer being stabbed by an individual in distress.

Central to Boston’s initiative is the Boston Emergency Services Team (BEST), a collaborative effort with the police that has been operational since 2011.

Following the civil unrest of 2020, city officials sought to expand and prioritize this model. By April 2021, Boston had introduced a pilot program designed to enhance the role of mental health professionals while reducing police presence during crisis situations.

This shift in policy was highlighted during the events of Saturday.

On that day, Boston Police and investigators were present at a brownstone on Hemenway Street, close to Northeastern University’s campus, following an incident where a person was shot and police officers sustained injuries on April 4, 2026.

Police Commissioner Michael Cox said officers were called around 10:45 a.m. after a man reported that four armed people outside his apartment near Northwestern University wanted to harm him.

Officers could not find anyone matching that description but spoke with the caller through the door and then requested EMS and a mental health clinician, through the BEST program, after concluding he was in immediate need of psychiatric help.

According to Cox, EMS and the clinician spent roughly 35 to 45 minutes talking with the man from outside the apartment and trying to persuade him to come out for treatment.

Instead, police said, he suddenly emerged carrying a sword, stabbed a Boston officer in the arm and knocked the clinician to the ground.

“One or more officers fired a Taser and their firearm at the individual, bringing the person to a halt,” the commissioner said. “EMS immediately provided medical attention. Unfortunately, the person succumbed to the injuries.”

The person has not been immediately identified.

The officer stabbed was given a tourniquet on scene before being taken to the hospital. Several officers and two EMS clinicians were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden.

“Today serves as a reminder of the dangers inherent in this work and the sacrifice our members make every day. Members of Boston EMS show up to save lives — not to be assaulted. No one should face violence for simply doing their job,” Boston EMS said in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with our injured members, the Boston Police officers, and everyone affected by today’s incident.”

Boston Police are investigating.

Lil Tjay found himself in legal trouble on Monday, facing charges related to disorderly conduct alongside operating a vehicle without a valid license.

WASHINGTON — The rapper, whose real name is Tione Merritt, was apprehended in Florida after an altercation that resulted in fellow artist Offset being hospitalized due to a gunshot wound. Despite the serious nature of the incident, Lil Tjay’s legal representative insists that he played no part in the shooting.

According to records from Broward County Jail, Merritt was detained on the aforementioned charges, with a bail amount set at a total of $3,000.

The Seminole Police Department confirmed to USA Today that Merritt’s arrest was “related to the incident.” Although another individual was also taken into custody at the scene, they have yet to face any charges.

Dawn M. Florio, Merritt’s attorney, addressed the swirling rumors online, asserting in a statement that her client had no involvement in the gun-related event.

Lawyer disputes online rumors

Merritt’s attorney, Dawn M. Florio, pushed back on speculation circulating online, saying in a statement that her client was not involved in the shooting.

“Merritt has not been shot, nor has Lil Tjay been charged with any shooting,” Florio said, adding that “any reporting to the contrary is false.”

Offset hospitalized after shooting

Offset, a member of the rap group Migos, was shot Monday evening in Hollywood, Florida, near the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, according to multiple reports.

His representative confirmed to Variety that the rapper was hospitalized and is in stable condition.

“We can confirm Offset was shot and is currently at the hospital receiving medical care,” the representative said. “He is stable and being closely monitored.”

Police said one person suffered injuries that were not life-threatening in the incident, which occurred in a valet area outside the casino. Authorities have not publicly identified the victim.

Officials said the scene has been secured and there is no ongoing threat to the public. 

Who is Offset?

Offset, who rose to fame as part of Migos, married fellow rapper Cardi B in 2017. The couple share three children, though Cardi B filed for divorce in 2024.

Migos released four full-length albums across their career, closing that chapter after the killing of Takeoff.

The third member of Migos, rapper Quavo, sought to transform his nephew Takeoff’s tragic shooting into a force for change, holding a summit against gun violence in 2024.

Police said Takeoff was an innocent bystander when he was shot outside a Houston bowling alley after a disagreement over a dice game. Takeoff’s death was among a string of fatal shootings in recent years that involved hip-hop stars such as Nipsey Hussle, Pop Smoke, PnB Rock and Young Dolph.

Offset embarked on a solo career years before Takeoff’s death.

NEW YORK (AP) — A lawsuit brought by the animal rights organization PETA, targeting the health standards of French bulldogs and other popular dog breeds, has been dismissed. A judge ruled that a New York law was incorrectly applied in the case.

Originally filed last year, the lawsuit represented a new chapter in PETA’s ongoing efforts against dog breeding practices. The organization accused the American Kennel Club (AKC) of endorsing unhealthy breed standards for dogs such as French bulldogs, which the AKC lists as the most popular breed in the United States, as well as bulldogs, Chinese shar-peis, dachshunds, and pugs. The AKC, known as the country’s oldest purebred dog registry, denied the allegations and asserted its commitment to canine health.

Gina DiNardo, the President of the American Kennel Club, expressed approval of the court’s decision on Tuesday.

“Our focus remains on what truly matters: preserving purebred dogs, advocating for all dogs and their caregivers, and upholding the rights of individuals and families to select the right dog for their home,” she stated.

PETA, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, indicated that its legal team is currently evaluating potential next steps.

“Money-grubbing dog merchants flood the market with deformed dogs bred at the AKC’s direction,” founder Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement. She urged people to adopt dogs from shelters instead of buying purebred pups: “No dog should be custom-made for a look that causes pain.”

The suit invoked a New York law that is generally used to challenge state and local government decisions, though it’s occasionally applied to private organizations. But those have been organizations with some authority over the people suing them, such as union members bringing complaints about their leadership or co-op apartment residents suing their building’s board, state Judge David B. Cohen said in a decision filed Monday.

Since PETA isn’t subject to the kennel club’s authority, the case “must be dismissed,” he wrote, without opining on the dog health issues at the heart of the case.

It focused on canine ailments that can be associated with flat faces — such as those of bulldogs, pugs and Frenchies — or with the short legs and long backs that dachshunds have. Shar-peis, meanwhile, may suffer spates of fever and inflammation known as “shar-pei autoinflammatory disease.”

The problems aren’t universal but can be serious.

PETA had wanted the judge to order the AKC to stop using the “standards” for those breeds. The standards guide dog show judges and many breeders.

The AKC has said the standards — which fanciers develop and the kennel club reviews and circulates — reflect “decades of collaboration with veterinary experts and breeders.” The kennel club says it has given over $40 million since 1995 to its canine health research charity.

Father Sentenced After Allegedly Using THC Pen and Colliding with Iron Fence, Injuring 12-Year-Old

A Las Vegas man is heading to prison for a minimum of seven years after a tragic incident involving a THC vape pen led to the death of a 12-year-old boy. The man, identified as Oh’Ryan Brooks, 27, was reportedly under the influence while getting his children ready for school, dropping them off, and then using the vape pen again before the fatal accident.

In a Clark County court on Monday, Brooks accepted a plea deal which resulted in the dismissal of several charges, including DUI and reckless driving. As a result, he was sentenced to serve between seven and 17 1/2 years in prison for leaving the scene of a fatal crash, with credit for 186 days already served, according to court documents.

The sentencing hearing saw differing opinions on the appropriate punishment. Brooks’ defense attorney suggested a prison term of two to five years, contrasting with prosecutors who advocated for a 20-year sentence.

“Nothing can bring the victim back,” remarked Clark County Judge Maria Gall, as reported by local ABC affiliate KTNV. “However, accountability for this crime is essential, and five years does not suffice given the circumstances.”

Surveillance footage allegedly captured Brooks colliding with Cristofer Suarez on October 3, 2025, at approximately 7:40 a.m., near the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Owens Avenue. Witnesses reported to the police that Brooks was “speeding on Owens Avenue” before the impact, which propelled Suarez into a nearby wrought iron fence.

After the alleged crash, Brooks claimed the sun was in his eyes and he had no idea what he hit, per police. Cristofer was walking to class that morning and had just taken a few steps off the curb, while walking in an implied crosswalk within an active school zone, when Brooks mowed him down, according to cops.

“Today marks six months since I heard his time of death, and I still hope to wake up from this horrible nightmare one day,” Cristofer’s mother, Martina Suarez, reportedly said in court. “Your honor, even though nothing will bring my son back, I ask you to give him the max. Please don’t let him get away with killing my son. No child should be killed, especially while going to school. You are our last hope for justice.”

Cops said Brooks confessed to being behind the wheel and smoking the THC vape pen while getting his children ready for school. Authorities noted in his arrest report, which was obtained by local CBS affiliate KLAS, that he was allegedly “swaying from side to side and slurring his words” while speaking to them and nearly fell over.

Brooks allegedly fled from the scene of the crash in his Mitsubishi SUV and then smoked more marijuana “because he knew he was going to jail,” according to the report. Police said Brooks was tracked and located through his license plate number, with security footage from an apartment where he was found allegedly showing him inspecting the front of his vehicle.

“He mentioned that he had his cell phone with him but did not make any calls because he doesn’t do that and had no one to call,” the arrest report said.

As part of his plea deal, Brooks admitted to fleeing the scene of the crash but insisted he did not cause it. He claimed in court on Monday that another car had hit him, cracking his windshield and making it hard to see. Both prosecutors and his own attorney clarified that this claim was not supported by the evidence, KTNV reports.

Brooks has been ordered to pay $6,953.31 in restitution to Cristofer’s mother. She has said that the amount was not even enough to pay for her son’s funeral.

“Not even near enough,” Suarez told reporters after Brooks accepted his plea deal in February.

Speaking to KTNV after the sentencing, Suarez said, “This ruined my whole life, and he’s going to get out, and he’s still going to be young, but I wanted him to hear exactly what he did — him and his family to hear exactly how badly he hurt my son. To eventually be able to grieve my son correctly and have closure, I need to know, and I need to make sure that I did everything that I could.”

Brooks, despite his claims about his windshield being cracked and another driver causing the crash, did apologize to Cristofer’s family during the hearing.

“I want to say sorry,” he told Suarez and others in attendance. “It was a complete accident.”

CHICAGO — The legal proceedings for Keshia Golden took another step forward on Tuesday morning as she appeared in court to face charges related to the alleged murder of her boyfriend.

Golden’s defense team is pushing for the dismissal of charges, asserting that her actions were in self-defense.

At the time of the incident, Golden was eight months pregnant. Her attorney claims that she was defending herself when she stabbed her then-boyfriend, Calvin Sidney, during an alleged attack in October 2022.

The prosecution has so far declined to drop the charges. However, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office extended an offer for Golden to plead guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder, which would result in a two-year probation period. Golden has turned down this offer.

Golden appeared in court for her most recent hearing on Tuesday.

Her lawyers in the public defender’s office argue Golden was acting in self-defense against a man with a history of abuse.

Golden’s attorneys say between June and September of 2022, police responded to five domestic violence incidents involving Golden and Sidney.

In July 2022 she had an order of protection against Sidney.

Prosecutors argue that Golden and Sidney were arguing over who could use the microwave the day of the stabbing.

They allege Golden “knocked a plate of food” out of his hands, and that’s when he allegedly pushed her onto the counter. A family member separated the two.

Sidney allegedly went into a bedroom, prosecutors said Golden walked into the room while armed with a knife and fatally stabbed him while he was laying on the bed.

Golden remains out on bond; her daughter is now three years old.

She is due back in court for a status hearing on July 13. A bench trial hearing was set for August 17.

If the charges are not dropped and this does go to trial, Golden’s attorney says the trial is expected to start sometime this summer.
