Friends’ Children Playfully Tease Her About Her Age

0

DEAR ABBY: I recently spent some time visiting a dear friend who is in her early 80s. Lately, she’s been showing signs of memory issues and some cognitive decline. Her children, who are in their 30s, still live at home, and her husband is also in his 80s.

During my visit, I observed how her family members frequently made comments about her hearing and mental sharpness. What started as seemingly innocent jokes quickly turned into hurtful remarks. I could tell from my friend’s face that these comments were wounding her, though she either laughed it off or acted as if she hadn’t heard them.

After leaving, I went to visit my sister, who is also in her early 80s, only to witness a similar situation. Her husband and daughter were incessantly teasing her about her hearing, eyesight, and occasional struggle to find the right words. This wasn’t new behavior, but seeing my friend endure it earlier had made it more intolerable. In both situations, I regret not speaking up. Abby, how should I handle this in the future? — LOUSY FRIEND AND SISTER

DEAR ‘LOUSY’: When you encounter similar situations again, don’t hesitate to express your concern. Let the individuals know that their remarks are not humorous but harmful. If they genuinely believe their loved one is experiencing difficulties, they should encourage her to be assessed by a neurologist, ophthalmologist, or audiologist to determine what can be done to help.

DEAR ABBY: My son and his wife have two children. Their youngest, a baby, is particularly special to me as he is my first biological grandchild from my son. I’ve developed a close bond with this baby by caring for him since he was just two and a half months old, every weekday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The plan was for me to care for him until he reached a little over a year old, after which he would go to daycare. However, I’ve recently learned that the costs of daycare might be prohibitive for them right now.

My husband and I have been eagerly looking forward to the time when I will have some time to do other things. I am torn between telling them I will watch him longer and saying they’re going to have to figure it out. I love this baby boy, and I love my son.

My emotions have gotten the best of me, and I’m considering caring for my grandson longer. However, I know that’s going to be an issue with my husband, who is not my son’s father. What is your view on this? — TORN GRANDMA IN FLORIDA

DEAR GRANDMA: My view is that you, your husband, your son and his wife should have a conversation in which you structure a schedule that will work for all of you. If that is not possible, because your son and his wife need help paying for day care, perhaps you and your husband could chip in.

Charlie’s Angels 50th Anniversary: Iconic Trio Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd & Jaclyn Smith Reunite at PaleyFest

0

Good morning, Angels. Hollywood witnessed a nostalgic gathering of legends as Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd, and Jaclyn Smith, the iconic stars of “Charlie’s Angels,” came together to mark a significant milestone. The trio reunited at PaleyFest 2026 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their groundbreaking television series.

Before the event commenced, Cheryl Ladd shared her excitement with On The Red Carpet, expressing, “This is a little overwhelming. I know there’s a huge group of people who’ve loved ‘Charlie’s Angels,’ and that’s gonna feel very good.” Her sentiment echoed the enduring affection fans have held for the series over the decades.

The beloved show, which captivated audiences on ABC from 1976 to 1981, originally featured Jackson, Smith, and the late Farrah Fawcett as Sabrina Duncan, Kelly Garrett, and Jill Munroe, respectively. These savvy private investigators tackled various cases under the mysterious guidance of their unseen boss, Charlie. Ladd joined the cast in the second season, stepping into the role of Kris Munroe, Jill’s sister, adding a fresh dynamic to the ensemble.

At PaleyFest, fans were given a rare treat as Jackson, Ladd, and Smith engaged in an open and heartfelt discussion, skillfully guided by George Pennacchio of On The Red Carpet. This reunion not only celebrated the show’s legacy but also acknowledged the lasting impact it has had on television history.

The PaleyFest audience was treated to a candid conversation with Jackson, Ladd and Smith, moderated by On The Red Carpet’s George Pennacchio.

In one particularly funny moment, Pennacchio asked the ladies to confirm a rumor.

“Is it true that in the early days of the show, Farrah’s hair was called the fourth Angel?,” Pennacchio asked.

Smith smiled as she replied, “It should have been if it wasn’t because it had a life of its own!”

The show was groundbreaking, as audiences at that time hadn’t seen an action series led by women before. It’s a distinction Jackson is keenly aware of to this day.

“You could sit back, put your feet up and forget your troubles for an hour. And at the same time, you could learn without knowing you were learning that women could do anything. Anything a man could do a woman could do and at at time, in the early and mid to late ’70s in Hollywood when you’re trying to break the glass ceiling, having three women star in a top network television show was really quite an accomplishment,” Jackson said.

Pennacchio will have more from the event this week in his On The Red Carpet report.

The PaleyFest conversation will be on PaleyFest’s YouTube channel next week.

Overflowing Bins Remain Uncollected on Streets This Week: Here’s Why

0
Thousands of Melbourne households will be forced to cram their rubbish into full bins this week, as kerbside collectors from several councils walked off the job today over pay and conditions.

Early this morning, waste collectors from the councils of Hume, Darebin, and Merri-bek initiated a strike, demanding a 10 percent salary increase this year, followed by annual hikes of 4 percent for the next three years.

Household bins and public bins across Melbourne’s north weren’t emptied today, forcing residents to wait another week until they are collected. (Nine)

As a result, household and public bins throughout Melbourne’s northern suburbs remained unemptied today, leaving residents with no choice but to wait until the next collection cycle.

The City of Hume experienced the most significant disruption, with approximately 70 workers participating in the walkout.

In contrast, the Merri-bek and Darebin councils managed to reduce the strike’s impact on their communities by deploying casual workers.

A council representative remarked that residents in Hume will “have to wait” for waste collection services to resume.

“We’re sorry about that, but we need to make sure our members are seen and heard.”

Council worker wages have fallen between seven and 12 per cent since 2021, according to the union.

“ASU members have had a gutful of being left behind while the rate capping policy has really torn down wages in local government,” Wark said.

“They’re striking today to seek a 10 per cent pay rise, which only goes part of the way to make up from the cost of living and inflation they’ve been subjected to in the last few years.”

Union members claim they haven’t received a pay rise in almost two years.

“Our members have been fighting for a year and a half just to get to the table,” Wark said.

“Our members are doing this action regretfully, it is not their first choice, they love their jobs, they’re really proud of the communities they support but this is where we’re at.”

Hume garbage collector Jayden Watson said the wage stagnation had put him behind in his goal of buying a home.

“I try to work hard, I try to stay behind and do more hours… [but] I’m falling behind whilst trying to save money,” Watson said.

“We all need to pay bills. Some people are struggling to get food on the table.”

In a joint response, the affected councils said negotiations with the ASU was ongoing.

“While we acknowledge the legal right of the ASU to take protected industrial action, these actions affect our communities, which is regrettable,” the councils said.

“We are keeping our communities informed on how any industrial action may affect them.

“We ask our communities for their patience and we will continue to negotiate in good faith with all unions representing our staff.”

In addition to the pause on rubbish collection, parking officers in the the cities of Yarra, Maribyrnong and Melbourne also stopped work today.

Local councils claim they’re restricted in what they can offer employees, due to the state government’s rate-capping policy.

“Every time workers sit down to bargain with councils, they’re told the rate cap means that they can’t meet their demands. It’s not good enough,” Wark said.

“It’s a simple question of priorities: if the government can find money for politicians like councillors whose wages have gone up by over 10 per cent, they can find the money for the people who pick up the rubbish,” Wark said.

But Acting Premier Ben Carroll insisted the rate cap was a vital measure for the broader community.

“The rates cap is a really important cost-of-living measure that supports hardworking Victorians every day,” he said.

A second bargaining meeting was scheduled for today.

If an agreement is not reached at that meeting, further council worker strikes are scheduled for Darebin, Greater Dandenong, Hobsons Bay, Hume, Maribyrnong, Melbourne, Merri-Bek and Yarra tomorrow.

“It will be things like parks not being mowed, library disruptions, no parking tickets being issued,” Wark said.

“Anything a council worker does is going to get disrupted in the next little while.

“We will keep taking action until members get what they deserve.”

Joe Kent Faces Backlash Over Misleading Iranian Propaganda Claims

0

Donald Trump’s former counterintelligence official has found himself in a heated dispute with Jake Tapper, following the CNN anchor’s criticism over his dissemination of misleading information about the Iran conflict.

Shortly before a bold U.S. military mission to save an Air Force colonel, Joe Kent, the former head of the National Counterterrorism Center, propagated a narrative implying that the U.S. was attempting to assassinate the colonel.

Kent stepped down a few weeks ago, citing in his resignation letter that Iran did not pose an immediate danger, and asserted that the conflict was being fueled by Israeli influence.

He shared an article from the left-leaning Drop Site News, which claimed that the Pentagon had abandoned hope of rescuing the unidentified airman and was allegedly planning to eliminate him to prevent his capture by Iran.

Tapper responded to Kent’s tweet, noting that he was “sharing Iranian state-linked outlet nonsense” and pointed out that the U.S. was not trying to kill the lost pilot, sarcastically adding that the story did not age well.

Kent – an Iraq War veteran whose wife was killed on active duty – didn’t take kindly to Tapper’s criticism and slammed him as a war propagandist.

‘Tapper’s purpose, like the entire corporate media, is to promote this foolish war and attack anyone who points out how this war isn’t in our nation’s interest,’ he wrote.

He encouraged his followers to instead ‘read independent media, Iranian media & US media – always question those cheering on wars & always pray for our troops.’

Tapper shot back: ‘Anyone who watches the coverage on The Lead/State of the Union knows I don’t “promote” the war. We cover it, critically.’

‘Moreover, I wasn’t attacking Mr. Kent. I pointed out that he had promoted false information suggesting the US was seeking to *kill* the missing US pilot. Wild stuff.’

Kent doubled down after Tapper’s criticism, as well as the New York Post writing a story calling him a ‘conspiracy theorist,’ suggesting a large-scale media effort on behalf of the war.

‘The Post is jumping in w/CNN to show that war & supporting Israel 1st is bipartisan. I quoted Drop Site News that gave a roll up of U.S. & Iranian coverage. This attack is designed to divert from the main issue- this foolish war is not in our interest & only benefits Israel,’ he wrote.

Trump revealed extraordinary new details about the daring rescue mission to extract a wounded US airman who spent almost 48 hours stranded in Iran .

The President on Monday described an all-hands-on-deck operation that employed 155 aircraft – including 64 fighter jets, 48 refueling tankers, 13 rescue aircraft and three helicopters.

Trump lauded ‘a breathtaking show of skill and precision, lethality and force’ as US forces swooped into mountainous terrain in southern Iran to rescue the weapons systems officer (WSO) whose F-15E fighter jet went down on Good Friday.

‘He scaled cliff faces, bleeding rather profusely, contacted his platoon, treated his own wounds and contacted American forces,’ Trump said of the still unidentified officer, who was rescued on Easter Sunday.

Trump admitted that there were military officers who were opposed to the operation which he said risked hundreds of lives. ‘God was watching us,’ the President said.

The pilot was rescued the day of the crash after both airmen ejected over enemy territory, but the WSO had remained missing.

The President noted how the weapons officer was able to activate a ‘beeper’ that showed US forces where to search for him, leading to the airman’s rescue and likely saving the soldier’s life. ‘It was like finding a needle in a haystack,’ Trump said.

Trump also lashed out at the media for reporting that the second airman was still missing, accusing outlets of alerting the Iranians to a target. He warned that ‘the person who reported the story will go to jail’ if they refuse to reveal their source.

It was unclear which reporter Trump was referring to and speculation ran rampant online Monday afternoon.

Trump revealed that US forces blew up their own planes before leaving because they had become bogged down in the makeshift runway at the extraction point.

Iran’s military said two US C-130 military transport planes and two Black Hawk helicopters were destroyed during the operation.

‘We blew them up to smithereens,’ Trump claimed.

‘It was sandy, wet sand, so we thought there may be a problem taking off because of the weight of the plane,’ he continued. ‘And then we also had all the men jumping back onto the planes, and they got pretty well bogged down.’

The President said US forces used a ‘farm not a runway’ to land and execute the search and rescue operation.

Trump said the US military had a ‘contingency plan’ for exactly that scenario, ‘which was pretty unbelievable. Where lighter, faster aircraft came in and they took them out.’

He said the old planes were destroyed ‘because we had equipment on the planes’ they the US didn’t want in enemy hands.

‘We didn’t want anybody examining our anti-aircraft equipment and other equipment. So these were large planes that were old, pretty old, and we blew them up,’ Trump divulged.

The downed airman first made contact by radioing in ‘God is good,’ Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth recounted, adding ‘we leave no man behind.’

The plane’s callsign was ‘Dude 44,’ said Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Dan Caine, with scores of aircraft scrambled within hours.

Caine praised the swift recovery of the pilot on Friday and the planning that went into rescuing the WSO.

The general said a special operations force fought their way in to extract the downed WSO in the early hours of Sunday, pressing on into daylight.

‘We will always bring overwhelming skill and firepower,’ the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs added.

When Trump was asked how many servicemembers were involved in the mission, Caine interjected: ‘I’d love to keep that a secret.’

‘OK, well … but I will tell you the number. I’ll keep it a secret. But it was hundreds and hundreds of these people,’ the President responded.

Duration of Monica Dutton’s Absence Following “Yellowstone” Departure

0

Warning: Spoilers for “Marshals” Season 1, Episode 6 — “Out of the Shadows”

As “Marshals” reaches its sixth episode, “Yellowstone” enthusiasts are still uncertain about the timeline of the series. The exact number of years since Monica Dutton’s (Kelsey Asbille) passing remained unclear until the latest episode, “Out of the Shadows,” which reveals that a year has transpired since her death. This revelation indicates that at least a year has passed in Taylor Sheridan’s universe since “Yellowstone” concluded, where Monica was last seen alive and well. However, the timeframe since Kayce Dutton relinquished the family ranch remains a mystery.

This revelation unfolds in a heartrending scene where viewers witness the aftermath of Monica’s death. The episode finally delivers the much-anticipated moment from the season’s trailer, where a nurse solemnly covers Monica with a sheet as her devastated husband and son observe. For the first time, the screen provides context with the note that this occurred “a year ago.” This period has been a lengthy and painful journey of mourning for Kayce (Luke Grimes), who acknowledges the need to move forward from his sorrow and the trappings of his widowhood.

The series “Marshals” continues to navigate Kayce’s path through grief, depicting his gradual emergence from the shadows of loss. Since Monica’s passing, Kayce and his son Tate have experienced tension and conflict, but recent episodes show them beginning to mend their once-strong bond. Fans of the Dutton family have welcomed this development, though “Yellowstone” viewers expressed frustration when a new character, Dolly (Ellyn Jameson), was introduced in Episode 4 as a possible romantic interest for Kayce. Many felt it was premature for him to consider dating, regardless of the time elapsed since Monica’s death.

With the confirmation that a year has passed, audiences might be more receptive to Kayce finding love again. While the prospect of a new relationship looms, viewers will need to come to terms with the idea that Kayce’s heart may eventually open to someone new, even as Monica’s memory remains ever present in his life.

Kayce has already begun to move on

“Marshals” continues to revolve around Kayce’s grieving process as — step by step — he starts to come out of his shell and leave behind his sadness. He and Tate have been prone to fights since Monica died, but they’ve begun to heal their once-close relationship in recent outings. That’s a narrative turn that devotees of the Dutton family celebrated, but “Yellowstone” fans were also furious when a potential love interest for Kayce named Dolly (Ellyn Jameson) was introduced in Episode 4. It felt far too soon for Kayce to be dating no matter how many months have passed since Monica’s death.

Now that audiences know that a year has gone by since Monica died, perhaps they’ll be more welcoming toward a potential girlfriend for Kayce. But until that lady shows up, they’re going to have to accept that one day Kayce’s grief will lift and he’ll fall for a fresh new face, with memories of Monica forever echoing in his mind.

Iran’s Grim Milestone: Unveiling This Year’s Record-Setting Government Actions

0

In brief

  • Access to the global internet in Iran has hovered at roughly one 1 cent of pre-war levels.
  • A slow intranet provides a few basic services and enables access to state-controlled news and messaging platforms.

Iran has now set a record with its largely government-imposed internet blackout, marking the longest nationwide digital disruption ever documented, as reported by a global monitoring organization.

Since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, access to the global internet has been severely restricted, maintaining only about 1% of the connectivity observed before the conflict, according to NetBlocks.

Earlier this year, in January, the nation experienced another significant internet disruption lasting 20 days, during which thousands perished amid widespread protests. As a result, the majority of Iranians have endured digital seclusion for almost two-thirds of the year 2026.

“Iran is unprecedented in having established internet connectivity only to dismantle it in favor of a national network,” NetBlocks explained on Sunday.

This sluggish, government-operated intranet offers limited services, primarily granting access to state-run news outlets and communication platforms.

‘Cut off the voice of Iranians’

Iranian Australian Saeid Zand told SBS News the internet crackdown shows Iran’s government is under pressure to quell uprisings by limiting people’s ability to plan collective action.

“They want to cut off the voice of Iranians; no-one hears from them, and they do what they like to the Iranians,” he said.

“It’s unfortunate because we don’t hear from our families, with our friends, and we don’t know what exactly is going on back home.”

Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said in March that the government is only permitting those who can “get the voice out” to access the internet. That has included senior officials, state-linked figures and news agencies.

Although countries like Myanmar and Sudan — and the regions of Kashmir in South Asia and Tigray in northern Ethiopia — have experienced longer intermittent outages, none have undergone a state-imposed shutdown of this magnitude for such an extended period, NetBlocks added.

No other conflicts, including those in Ukraine and Gaza, are known to “have sent an entire country offline” in the way Iran has, the monitor said.

No end in sight

During the January blackout, the government said many online businesses could not survive more than three weeks without connectivity, according to Reuters reports.

The struggling economy was losing tens of millions of dollars in direct damages each day, it said, in addition to the indirect and cumulative impacts of a nationwide shutdown.

The daily economic costs to Iran of this even longer shutdown could therefore be much higher.

Zand said that Iranians will adapt their lives during the shutdown, some going offline and others using Starlink, which provides satellite internet.

“But this is very risky because if the government and the regime find out that they have internet access specifically to the Starlink, it puts them at huge risk,” he said.

While the crackdown continues, Iranians in Australia fear for their relatives’ safety, he said.

“Shutting down the internet is an old move of Iran, and it could do it for who knows how much longer,” he added.

The administration of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, which had made restoring openness to Iran’s internet environment a key campaign pledge less than two years ago, has yet to provide an official explanation for the shutdown.

Authorities have also not clarified how they expect what remains of the country’s damaged digital sector and its globally isolated economy to withstand the months and years ahead, as the war continues.

The crackdown on telecommunications continues as US President Donald Trump ratchets up pressure on Iran, threatening in an expletive-laden Easter Sunday social media post to target Iran’s power plants and bridges if the strategic Strait of Hormuz is not reopened.

In response to Trump’s threats, Iran demanded an end to hostilities.

ARCH Successfully Completes 2026 Homeless Count: Key Insights and Future Implications

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Appalachian Regional Coalition on Homelessness (ARCH) has wrapped up its yearly point-in-time (PIT) count, assessing the number of homeless individuals across the eight-county area it serves.

This year’s survey identified 927 individuals either without shelter or residing in transitional housing or emergency shelters.

Terry Burdett from ARCH noted that this year’s count closely mirrors that of last year. He attributes this consistency to the method used in conducting the survey.

“The fact that the numbers remain steady suggests we’ve reached a plateau in our counting approach,” Burdett explained.

Burdett also highlighted that the collected data is instrumental in monitoring trends among specific groups, such as the elderly.

“Our senior citizens, which is a population we try to keep an eye on because they are always on a fixed income. And so when these rents greatly increase, we found that they were becoming homeless because of economic rent issues, not because of things like disabilities.”

The data from PIT counts can be found on the organization’s website.

Four-Wheeler Escape Ends in Arrest After Collision with Patrol Car in Archer

0

Staff report

ARCHER, Fla. – A 20-year-old from Ft. White, Tyler Malik Bryant, found himself behind bars last night following an alleged high-speed chase on a four-wheeler that ended with a collision into a police vehicle.

On the evening of April 5, just before 9 p.m., deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office were vigilantly overseeing a block party on the 17200 block of SW Archer Road. These gatherings have a reputation for erupting into violence, including incidents involving gunfire, brawls, and hazardous driving behaviors.

During the patrol, a deputy observed a four-wheeler emerge onto SW Archer Road, perform a donut, and then make a swift U-turn, heading back north onto SW 174th Street. The driver reportedly continued at a reckless pace, ignoring stop signs and endangering the neighborhood with his high-speed antics.

When the four-wheeler blew through a stop sign at the intersection of SW 174th Street and SW Archer Road, a deputy decided to pursue. Spotting the vehicle returning in his direction, he activated his patrol lights to initiate a traffic stop. The four-wheeler halted momentarily, and the deputy approached, identifying the driver as Bryant. Despite being cautioned not to flee, Bryant grinned at the deputy and sped off once more, prompting further pursuit.

Other deputies responded to look for the four-wheeler, and a second deputy saw the four-wheeler and tried to catch up to it, but the four-wheeler reportedly changed directions after spinning a donut in the roadway and crashed into the second deputy’s patrol vehicle, where he was taken into custody.

Bryant has been charged with fleeing from law enforcement with lights activated. He has no criminal convictions, but there is a pending sworn complaint from when he was a juvenile, charging him with possession of tobacco products by a minor. Judge Meshon Rawls ordered him released on his own recognizance.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law

Shocking Case: Son’s Brutal Assault on Elderly Mother Leaves Community Stunned

0

A New York man stands accused of a vicious assault on his elderly mother, allegedly asking, “Why aren’t you dying?” as he struck her with a metal object and attempted to choke her.

John Strano, 37, faces charges including attempted second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree assault, criminal obstruction, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, following the alleged attack on his 75-year-old mother. This information comes from a statement by the Nassau County Police Department.

Authorities responded to a call at a residence in Williston Park at 5:42 p.m. on April 1. Upon arrival, they discovered the injured woman, who recounted to officers that a dispute with her son had escalated into violence.

“Strano pushed the victim to the ground and repeatedly slammed her head to the ground,” police reported. “He continued to punch her in the face multiple times and hit her head with a blunt metal object.”

Police also allege that Strano attempted to choke his mother before he fled the scene.

The victim was transported to an area hospital, where police said she was listed in stable condition, while Strano was taken into custody at a nearby location “without incident.”

In court, according to News 12, prosecutors provided more details about the alleged attack, saying that Strano struck his mom more than three dozen times with a metal clamp to the back of her head.

Strano allegedly told police that he’d asked his mother “Why aren’t you dying?” and “Why are you still breathing?” as he carried out the attack, prosecutors said.

They added that the victim had swelling to her face and head, severe lacerations and was knocked unconscious during the incident.

Oxygen reached out to the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County, who is representing Strano, but did not receive an immediate reply.

The 37-year-old is expected to appear back in court on April 6, according to court records reviewed by Oxygen.

Top 5 Dumbbell Exercises to Boost Leg Muscle Growth Faster Than Squats for 55+ Fitness Enthusiasts

0

In the realm of leg training, squats are often hailed as the go-to exercise. However, for those over 55, incorporating variety and exercises that challenge both stability and strength may yield better results. That’s where dumbbells come into play, offering a versatile and joint-friendly option for muscle building.

After years of coaching both athletes and everyday individuals, I’ve observed significant progress when the focus shifts to unilateral exercises. Training one leg at a time not only engages more muscles but also addresses imbalances and enhances hip and core stability. This approach can foster muscle growth in ways that traditional squats might overlook. By incorporating different grips such as goblet, suitcase, or offset holds, you can effectively challenge your legs without the need to constantly increase weights.

For those aiming to develop lean muscle, enhance strength, and maintain resilient legs, it’s recommended to complete around 10 to 15 working sets per muscle group each week, with repetitions ranging from 8 to 15. The following five dumbbell exercises are designed to meet these goals. They work your legs from varied angles, boost balance and coordination, and keep your workouts engaging so you remain motivated and consistent. Let’s explore these exercises that can truly make a difference.

From years of coaching athletes and everyday clients, I’ve seen how quickly progress picks up when we shift toward unilateral work. Training one leg at a time forces your body to recruit more muscle, clean up imbalances, and stabilize through your hips and core. That combination drives muscle growth in a way traditional bilateral squats sometimes miss. Add in different holding positions like goblet, suitcase, or even offset loading, and you instantly unlock new ways to challenge your legs without needing heavier and heavier weights.

If your goal is to build lean muscle, improve strength, and keep your legs feeling capable and resilient, aim for about 10 to 15 total working sets per muscle group per week, with most sets in the 8 to 15-rep range. The five dumbbell exercises below check every box. They target your legs from multiple angles, improve balance and coordination, and keep your training fresh, so you stay consistent. Let’s get into the moves that deliver real results.

Goblet Split Squats

This move turns a traditional squat into a single-leg strength builder that lights up your quads and glutes while demanding balance and control. Holding the dumbbell in a goblet position keeps your torso upright, shifting more tension to your legs rather than your lower back. You’ll also notice how much your stabilizers kick in, especially through your hips. Over time, this helps clean up side-to-side imbalances that can limit strength and lead to nagging aches. It’s one of the most efficient ways to build muscle while improving your body’s movement.

Muscles Trained: Quads, glutes, hamstrings, and core

How to Do It:

  1. Hold a dumbbell at chest height in a goblet position.
  2. Step your back foot behind you into a split stance.
  3. Lower your hips straight down until your front thigh is parallel to the floor.
  4. Keep your chest tall and your front knee tracking over your toes.
  5. Drive through your front foot to return to standing.
  6. Complete all reps, then switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps per leg. Rest for 60 to 90 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Front-foot elevated split squat, tempo split squat, offset goblet split squat

Form Tip: Keep most of your weight in your front leg and stay tall through your torso.

Dumbbell Walking Lunges

Walking lunges build strength, coordination, and endurance all at once. Each step challenges your balance and forces your legs to repeatedly absorb and produce force. This combination creates a powerful muscle-building stimulus while also improving your movement through space. You’ll feel your glutes and quads working hard to control every rep. Over time, this translates to stronger, more capable legs for daily life and training.

Muscles Trained: Quads, glutes, hamstrings, and calves

How to Do It:

  1. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Step forward into a lunge position.
  3. Lower your back knee toward the ground under control.
  4. Push through your front foot to step forward into the next rep.
  5. Continue alternating legs with each step.
  6. Maintain an upright posture throughout the movement.

Recommended Sets and Reps:
Perform 3 sets of 10 to 14 steps per leg. Rest for 60 to 90 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Reverse walking lunges, suitcase lunges, paused lunges

Form Tip: Take controlled steps and avoid rushing through each rep.

Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift

Strong hamstrings and glutes are essential for building balanced leg muscle, and this exercise targets both directly. The Romanian deadlift (RDL) teaches you how to hinge at your hips while keeping tension where it belongs. That hamstring stretch creates a potent growth stimulus when paired with controlled reps. It also strengthens your posterior chain, which supports better movement and reduces strain on your knees. A strong posterior chain is a staple for building complete leg strength.

Muscles Trained: Hamstrings, glutes, and lower back

How to Do It:

  1. Hold a dumbbell in each hand in front of your thighs.
  2. Stand tall with a slight bend in your knees.
  3. Push your hips back as you lower the weights down your legs.
  4. Keep your back flat and your chest slightly forward.
  5. Lower until you feel a stretch in your hamstrings.
  6. Drive your hips forward to return to standing.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps. Rest for 60 to 90 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Single-leg Romanian deadlift, staggered stance RDL, tempo RDL

Form Tip: Focus on pushing your hips back rather than bending your knees.

Goblet Step-Ups

Step-ups build real-world strength that carries over to everything from climbing stairs to hiking trails. Holding a dumbbell in the goblet position keeps your posture strong and your core engaged. Each rep forces your working leg to generate power while maintaining control at the top. You’ll also improve balance and coordination as you stabilize on one leg. It’s a simple move that delivers serious results.

Muscles Trained: Quads, glutes, and calves

How to Do It:

  1. Hold a dumbbell at chest height in a goblet position.
  2. Place one foot on a sturdy box or bench.
  3. Drive through your lead foot to step up onto the surface.
  4. Bring your trailing foot up to meet the lead foot.
  5. Step back down under control.
  6. Complete all reps, then switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps per leg. Rest for 60 to 90 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Lateral step-ups, high box step-ups, offset goblet step-ups

Form Tip: Drive through your entire foot, not just your toes.

Dumbbell Reverse Lunge

Reverse lunges are easier on your knees while still delivering a strong muscle-building stimulus. Stepping backward allows you to control the descent and keep better alignment through your hips. Improved alignment reduces unnecessary stress while still challenging your quads and glutes. It’s a great option if forward lunges feel uncomfortable or if you want to build strength with more control. Over time, this helps improve stability and confidence in your lower body.

Muscles Trained: Quads, glutes, hamstrings, and core

How to Do It:

  1. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Step one foot back into a lunge position.
  3. Lower your back knee toward the ground.
  4. Keep your front knee stacked over your ankle.
  5. Push through your front foot to return to standing.
  6. Alternate legs with each rep.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps per leg. Rest for 60 to 90 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Deficit reverse lunge, offset reverse lunge, paused reverse lunge

Form Tip: Step back far enough to keep your front shin vertical.

Building strong, capable legs after 55 comes down to consistency, smart exercise selection, and understanding how your body responds to training. You don’t need to chase heavy barbells or grind through workouts that leave your joints feeling beat up. Instead, focus on movements that challenge your muscles while allowing you to move well and recover properly. Dumbbells give you that flexibility, which is why they’re such a valuable tool for long-term progress. When you combine thoughtful programming with quality movement, your legs respond quickly.

Here’s how to get the most out of your training:

  • Train each leg individually: Single-leg work improves muscle balance and increases overall muscle recruitment.
  • Progress your reps before weight: Build control and endurance first, then gradually increase load.
  • Stay consistent with weekly volume: Aim for 10 to 15 total working sets per muscle group.
  • Control every rep: Slower eccentrics increase time under tension and drive muscle growth.
  • Rotate holding positions: Switch between goblet, suitcase, and offset loading to challenge your body in new ways.
  • Respect recovery: Give your legs at least 48 hours between hard sessions to rebuild and grow stronger.
