AI Cameras Catch Couple with $2200 in Seatbelt Fines

0

Tina* was unaware of the penalties she incurred until weeks after they were issued, and her husband claims that a human officer would not have fined her at all if they had stopped her.

The first instance occurred when an AI-operated camera captured her on November 30 last year.

Tina was snapped with her seatbelt under her arm by an AI-based camera in WA.

The camera caught her driving with a seatbelt positioned under her arm along the Kwinana Freeway in the southern suburbs of Perth.

Within the following three weeks, the same camera recorded Tina three additional times with her seatbelt improperly fastened.

It wasn’t until over a month later, in January, that she was informed of the four nearly identical fines that arrived in her mailbox.

“All of a sudden we get a flurry, a rampage of tickets generated by an artificially intelligent machine with no human intervention,” her husband James told nine.com.au.

A WA Department of Transport spokesperson told nine.com.au that “while all infringements are usually issued within one month of capture, this timeframe may vary depending on the number of incidents”.

Tina is now facing three $550 fines and 16 demerit points (one of the offences had been during a double demerit period).

It’s enough to have her licence suspended.

Tina was slugged with four fines totalling more than $2000 and 24 demerit points.

James has also been slugged with a $550 fine and eight demerit points for an infringement when Tina was in the passenger seat.

He said none of the fines would have been issued if a human had pulled them over.

Tina has a medical condition that affects her ability to wear a seatbelt across her chest, according to a medical referral sighted by nine.com.au.

“Had she been warned by a human police officer she could explain, ‘sorry officer, I’ve got a medical certificate,’” James said.

But that’s not an option when an AI camera is responsible for issuing fines.

Now they’re worried Tina will lose her licence.

That would be devastating for the stay-at-home mum, especially because James does fly-in, fly-out work.

”I work away, my wife wouldn’t be able to go anywhere or do anything,” James said.

“How is she meant to go about her daily life?”

The couple copped four fines, including one for James when Tina was the passenger (bottom right).

He and Tina requested that the fines be reviewed as soon as they arrived.

James claimed he’s made up to 20 calls to the Department of Transport trying to explain Tina’s medical situation.

Some Australians may be issued a seatbelt exemption medical certificate by a doctor for a medical condition or disability.

WA’s Department of Transport told nine.com.au these certificates must be signed by a registered medical practitioner and be current at the time of the alleged offence.

The certificate must say that the person is unable to wear a seatbelt for a specific qualifying medical reason, or that it would be unreasonable to require the wearing of a seatbelt due to the person’s size, build or other physical characteristic.

The certificate must be carried whenever in a vehicle.

“If a driver (or their passenger) has a current, valid medical exemption and has been issued a seat belt infringement, they can email DTMI’s Infringement Services area with the details, and attach the exemption certificate,” a Department spokesperson said.

At the time of writing, only one of Tina’s infringements had been reviewed.

It was rejected, meaning she will have to pay the $550 fine and cop the demerit points, or take the matter to court.

“If I were to elect to go to court and we were to fail, we get an additional $350 added on top of the actual fine,” James said.

“If we had a human being pull the car over, none of this would have ever happened.”

4 Effective Standing Exercises to Quickly Tone Your Belly After 60

0

A lifestyle coach unveils four standing exercises to activate your deep core after age 60.

Exercise consistency and discipline can transform your body, particularly when it comes to shedding stubborn belly fat. Generally, the more intense your workout, the more calories you burn. While the path to achieving your fitness goals might not always be straightforward, certain methods can be surprisingly effective. For example, standing workouts can significantly aid in sculpting your waistline without the need for lifting weights.

We consulted with Terry Tateossian, the Founder and Certified Lifestyle Medicine Coach at THOR – The House of Rose. She shared four standing exercises designed to help flatten your belly after 60, especially when combined with a healthy diet.

“At any age, weight training alone won’t specifically target belly fat. The most effective approach to managing body fat and its distribution lies in proper nutrition,” Tateossian explains. “Consistently consuming balanced amounts of protein, carbohydrates, and fats throughout the day is key to regulating belly fat and overall body composition. Remember, as the saying goes, ‘You cannot spot reduce fat from specific areas of your body. Fat loss occurs all over, and sometimes the belly is the last area to show changes.’”

“Weight training at any age will not get target belly fat anywhere on the body. The most optimal way to control body fat and fat distribution throughout the body is through nutrition,” Tateossian stresses. “Adequate amounts of protein, carbs, and fat dosed throughout the day at equal intervals and done consistently will help manage belly fat and overall body fat. And of course, the old saying goes, ‘You cannot spot reduce fat from specific parts of the body. We lose fat all over and sometimes the belly can be the last place we see changes.’”

Exercises like hip thrusts and Romanian deadlifts are compound movements. According to Tateossian, they don’t completely engage the deep core muscles in a targeted manner.

“While the core is used to stabilize the body during those compound moves, it is not directly targeted. But that does not mean you can’t get strong abs doing them,” she adds.

Why a Dreaded ‘Belly Pooch’ Tends To Become More Common With Age

Some of the main physiological reasons behind belly fat gain after 60 have to do with certain lifestyle and hormonal factors.

“As our hormones change, fat distribution in the body changes and we tend to store more fat around our belly. That is if we don’t take steps to actively prevent what naturally happens as we age. So for example, if we don’t change our lifestyle in midlife, we tend to become ‘victims’ of the aging process,” Tateossian explains.

Below are Tateossian’s favorite exercises for deep core activation and to sculpt a stellar six-pack at any age. Of course, it’s essential to pair these recommended moves with a healthy, protein-packed diet.

Standing Straight Leg Raises

  1. Begin standing tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Hold onto a sturdy chair or wall for optional support.
  3. Keep your left leg straight as you lift it as high as you’re comfortably able to, all while maintaining tall posture.
  4. Use control to lower for 3 seconds.
  5. Repeat on the other side.
  6. Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 15 reps on each leg. Rest for 60 seconds between sets.

Standing Marches With Band

  1. Position a resistance band around your ankles or the arches of your feet.
  2. Stand tall with your feet hip-distance apart and core engaged.
  3. Begin to march in place, lifting one knee up toward your chest at a time, ensuring the band stays taut.
  4. Use control as you lower for 3 seconds.
  5. Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 15 reps on each leg. Rest for 60 seconds between sets.

Overhead Reach With Pilates Ball

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Hold a Pilates ball overhead.
  3. Gradually lower the ball toward one side of your body for 3 seconds, keeping the core tight.
  4. Return to the start position.
  5. Lower the ball toward the opposite side and continue to alternate.
  6. Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 15 reps on each side. Rest for 60 seconds between sets.

Diagonal Chops

  1. Stand tall, feet shoulder-distance apart.
  2. Hold a Pilates ball high over your right shoulder.
  3. Breathe in, chopping the ball down diagonally toward your opposite foot and bending your knees.
  4. Reverse the motion.
  5. Repeat on the other side.
  6. Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 15 reps on each side. Rest for 60 seconds between sets.

Melania Trump Shines at Movie Premiere with Donald, But a Key Figure Is Missing

0

On Thursday evening, Melania Trump took center stage at the premiere of her film, expressing pride in what she described as providing an exclusive glimpse into the presidential experience.

“While some have labeled this a documentary, it is not,” the First Lady declared from the stage of the newly renamed Trump-Kennedy Center. “It is a creative endeavor that delivers perspectives, insights, and moments that remain unseen by most.”

The film, titled “Melania: Twenty Days to History,” captures the intense lead-up to Donald Trump’s second inauguration, documenting the First Lady’s journey from Mar-a-Lago to New York City.

Melania appeared in a chic Dolce and Gabbana buttoned dress paired with black stilettos. She was accompanied by Donald Trump and an array of celebrities and political figures, including Dr. Phil, Nicki Minaj, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

On the red carpet, President Trump remarked to reporters, “This brings back memories of the days when the Academy Awards actually had viewership.”

But there was a notable absence. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who was slated to attend, did not appear on the red carpet as she faces intense pressure to resign after the fatal shooting of a protester by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis on Saturday.

Trump showered praise on Noem’s rival Tom Homan, newly installed to lead the immigration crackdown in Minnesota. ‘I think he’s terrific,’ Trump said, adding: ‘But we have to get rid of the criminals.’

Melania, asked about her inspiration for the film, told reporters: ‘Well it was my life.’

‘You will see humor, you will see grief, you will see fashion so I’m very proud of the film,’ the 55-year-old told reporters.

Where was Kristi?

Homeland chief Kristi Noem has found herself sidelined and isolated in Trump’s cabinet amid the fallout from the chaotic immigration operation in Minneapolis that resulted in the deaths of two Americans.

The fatal shootings of Reene Good, a mother of three children, and Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, by immigration agents have rocked the administration. Noem’s public rhetoric afterward intensified scrutiny of her judgment and command of the department.

She has lost the confidence of large swaths of rank-and-file ICE and Border Patrol officials, who accuse her of sidelining experienced leadership, chasing media-driven enforcement actions, and creating confusion on the ground.

Trump in response installed her longtime rival, Border Czar Tom Homan, to oversee immigration operations in Minneapolis while Noem engages in a blame game with Stephen Miller.

Trump mocked his predecessor’s Netflix contract when a reporter questioned him about Amazon’s $40 million deal for the movie rights: ‘Ask President Obama who got paid a lot of money and hasn’t done anything. Melania really produced.’

Former Trump attorney Alina Habba donned a chic black pant suit and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins wore a glitzy jacket over a dark evening gown as they were among the first luminaries to step out.

Speaker Mike Johnson and his wife Kelly followed, bucking the dark theme with a beige dress. The Speaker told the Daily Mail there might be a short government shutdown as Congress battles over ICE funding.

Hegseth was joined by his wife Jennifer who wore a glittering midnight-blue jumpsuit, while Administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency Lee Zeldin’s wife Diana stunned in a daring white ensemble.

It was a family affair for Dr Oz who arrived with wife Lisa and their kids Oliver and Daphne.

Health Secretary RFK Jr., Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump-Kennedy Center director Ric Grenell donned navy blue suits with white shirts.

The President and First Lady also held a private screening at the White House the Saturday before release, controversially deciding to go forward with the event just hours after a CBP agent shot and killed ICU nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Melania told The Five as part of her promotion for the movie on Wednesday that she hopes people will ‘know me a little bit more’ by watching the film.

Iran Claims to Have Shot Down US Aircraft as Search for Missing Pilot Intensifies

0

American military personnel are engaged in a critical mission to locate a missing fighter jet pilot after Iranian defense systems shot down his aircraft amidst intense combat. This incident follows the earlier downing of another US jet by Iranian forces.

On Friday, Iranian state media released footage claiming to capture the destruction of a US A-10 Warthog, while reports emerged that an F-15E Strike Eagle had also been taken down just hours before.

These back-to-back incidents resulted in two pilots ejecting into hostile territory. Although the pilot of the A-10 was successfully rescued in a dramatic operation, the whereabouts of the F-15E pilot remain unknown.

The US military is conducting a high-stakes search and rescue operation behind enemy lines in an effort to recover the missing aviator.

Meanwhile, Friday night saw the Pentagon disclose updated figures, reporting that the number of US troops injured in the ongoing conflict with Iran has climbed to 365.

The total included 247 Army soldiers, 63 Navy sailors, 19 Marines and 36 Air Force airmen. The death toll for the conflict remains at 13 US service members.

Following reports that the two US aircrafts were shot down on Friday, White House officials said President Donald Trump was briefed on the relief efforts.

A senior administration official told the Daily Mail that the President’s national security team is gathered at the White House and the President has been working all day from the Oval Office, or the Oval’s dining room, receiving updates.

In a brief phone interview, Trump declined to discuss details of the search and rescue operation, and insisted that it would not affect ongoing negotiations with Iran.

When asked by NBC News reporter Garrett Haake whether the plane incidents could end negotiations between Iran and the US, the President responded: ‘No, not at all. No, it’s war. We’re in war, Garrett.’

It marked the first time a US jet has been downed by enemy fire since the start of the war 35 days ago.

Meanwhile, Newsmax reported that a US Black Hawk was hit by enemy fire while conducting rescue operations for the pilots. The crew is reportedly accounted for and is safe.

Later Friday, Iranian state media claimed credit for the plane crash, saying Iranian defense forces struck the A-10.

Iranian state media also urged civilians to capture the pilots on the Strike Eagle, with a ‘reward’ offered by the Islamic regime.

Israeli media reported that the missing airmen has likely sent out his emergency location signal out to the rescue team.

Iranian media released images showing debris as well as ejector seats from the downed F-15E, which costs approximately $100 million.

An anchor on Iranian state media urged local residents in Southern Iran to hunt down and hand over the ‘enemy pilot’ to regime authorities.

The local TV channel is based in Kohkilouyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province, an intensely rural and mountainous region, the Associated Press reported.

Viewers were also told to ‘shoot them if you see them,’ referring to US aircrafts flying low in the region in an apparent search for the crew members.

The regime has previously made a series of false claims about shooting down piloted US planes.

However, Friday was the first time state media has called on the public to look for the suspected American pilots.

If the regime did successfully shoot down a fighter jet, it would mark a major escalation in the war.

Trump vowed during an address to the nation on Wednesday night to wind down the conflict in the coming weeks.

As the war now enters its 35th day, Iran has launched new attacks on Gulf energy sites with strikes on a desalination plant and oil refinery in Kuwait as well as a gas complex in Abu Dhabi.

Ryan Coogler to Bring ‘Animorphs’ Adventure to Disney+ with Exciting New Series

0

In exciting news for fans of 1990s literature, the iconic sci-fi series “Animorphs” is set to be adapted into a streaming series on Disney+. The project is in its early stages, with acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler, known for his Oscar-winning work, serving as executive producer. This development was initially reported by Variety on Friday.

The upcoming series will draw from the popular “Animorphs” books, a creation of Katherine Applegate and her husband Michael Grant. Spanning 54 books from 1996 to 2001, the series captivated audiences with its thrilling narrative, starting with “The Invasion” and wrapping up with “The Beginning.” Over its run, the franchise sold over 35 million copies globally.

The storyline revolves around a group of teenagers who encounter a dying alien. They learn that Earth is in danger of being overtaken by a species of parasitic aliens known as Yeerks. The alien bestows upon them the ability to morph into any animal they touch, a power they harness to fight back against the extraterrestrial threat.

Katherine Applegate took to social media to express her cautious optimism about the adaptation, sharing the excitement with fans who have cherished the series for decades.

Applegate shared the news on social media with cautious optimism.

“Michael Grant and I have concerns that the project is under-resourced. But one of the producers, Sev Ohanian, is a friend, as well as a genuine Animorphs fan,” she wrote. “If anyone can make it work, he can. Fingers crossed.”

The adaptation marks the latest high-profile project for Coogler and Proximity Media under their existing deal with Disney, under which Coogler is working on a pilot for a reboot of “The X-Files” starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel. He’s also fresh off Oscar wins for his hit film “Sinners,” which won four Academy Awards, with Coogler taking home the award for best original screenplay.

Should it move forward, this would be the second “Animorphs” TV series to make it to air. A live-action series aired on Nickelodeon for two seasons between 1998 and 2000. There was also a previously announced attempt to develop an “Animorphs” film in 2020 that never moved forward.

In a 2016 interview, Applegate reflected on the books’ lasting appeal, saying that she and Grant “were clearly not talking down” to young readers.

“We used the premise to talk about big things with kids, and we think they appreciated that,” she said. “And then we’d have a fight between an alien and a kid-turned-tiger, and seriously, how is that not cool?”

No casting or premiere date has been announced.

Uncovering the Truth: Pam Bondi’s Involvement in Epstein Files and Her Departure from Trump’s Team

President Donald Trump has dismissed Attorney General Pam Bondi after 14 months in office, appointing Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as the interim leader of the Justice Department. The announcement, made on April 2, comes after the White House expressed ongoing dissatisfaction with Bondi’s management of the Jeffrey Epstein files and what Trump perceived as a lack of aggressiveness in prosecuting political opponents.

This development marks the second significant cabinet change in Trump’s second term, following the removal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in March.

Why Did Trump Fire Pam Bondi: Epstein Files Role Revealed

Trump’s Announcement: Exact Words on Pam Bondi Exit

Trump addressed Bondi’s departure on Truth Social, portraying it as a transition rather than a dismissal. “Pam Bondi is a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year,” Trump stated. “Pam did a tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown on crime across our country, with murders plummeting to their lowest level since 1900.”

He added that Pam Bondi “will be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future.” Blanche, Trump said, is “a very talented and respected Legal Mind” who will serve as acting attorney general.

Timeline of Events: How Frustrations Built at DOJ

Over the past months, Trump’s dissatisfaction with Bondi had been growing. In September 2025, he publicly criticized her on Truth Social, stating, “Pam, I have reviewed over 30 statements and posts saying that, essentially, ‘same old story as last time, all talk, no action.'” Shortly thereafter, the Department of Justice indicted former FBI Director James Comey, although the case was later dismissed by a judge.

By January 2026, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump was privately describing Bondi as “weak and an ineffective enforcer of his agenda.” The final decision to remove her followed an April 1 White House meeting, subsequent to Trump’s Supreme Court appearance concerning birthright citizenship.

Role of Epstein Files in the Decision

The Epstein files controversy proved central to Bondi’s downfall. She had promised transparency but delivered what critics called “obfuscation.” In February 2025, she claimed Epstein’s client list was “sitting on my desk” – an assertion the DOJ later denied.

A July 2025 DOJ memo stated no more files would be released, triggering outrage from Trump allies. Congress responded by passing the Epstein Files Transparency Act in November 2025, forcing disclosure. While the DOJ eventually released roughly 3.5 million pages, critics noted this was only about half of identified materials.

Fox Business panelist Dagen McDowell called Bondi’s handling “a rolling disaster.”

Who Is Todd Blanche? Acting Attorney General Profile

Todd Blanche, 51, is Trump’s former personal criminal defense lawyer – the first acting attorney general in modern history to have held that role for a sitting president. He represented Trump in the Manhattan hush-money case and the Mar-a-Lago documents prosecution.

Blanche joined the DOJ as deputy attorney general in January 2025 and has been publicly visible on the Epstein issue, defending the administration’s release process on Fox News. He claimed on April 2 that “the Department of Justice has now released all the files with respect to the Epstein saga” – a statement fact-checkers disputed, noting roughly half of identified documents remain unreleased.

Impact on Justice Department Independence

Critics warn Blanche’s appointment further erodes DOJ independence. Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) wrote: “The DOJ is not a personal law firm, yet Donald Trump has installed another one of his former personal defense lawyers to lead the DOJ.”

Blanche has previously defended the department’s pursuit of Trump’s perceived enemies, saying in November 2025: “When I read now that we’re weaponizing, I feel like I’m being gaslit.” Under Bondi, the DOJ prosecuted Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James – both cases later dismissed.

Pam Bondi’s Tenure Highlights and Controversies

Bondi, 60, was Florida’s first female attorney general before joining Trump’s administration. Her confirmation in February 2025 passed 54-46, with only one Democrat – Sen. John Fetterman – voting yes.

Her congressional appearances became notorious. In February 2026, when pressed on Epstein files, she shouted at a Democratic senator: “You don’t tell me anything, you washed-up, loser lawyer!” She also deflected by noting stock market gains: “The Dow is over 50,000 right now.”

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie, a frequent Trump critic, supported her firing, posting: “I hope the next AG will release all the Epstein files according to the law.”

What Happens Next: Potential Permanent Replacement

Trump is reportedly considering EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin as Bondi’s permanent replacement. The two met at the White House on March 31 to discuss the position. Zeldin, a former congressman from New York, has led Trump’s deregulation efforts at EPA.

Other names circulating include Jeanine Pirro, the former Fox News host now serving as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Any permanent nominee will require Senate confirmation.

Reactions From Both Sides of the Aisle

Republican reactions were mixed. Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) called Bondi “a great friend and one of the best lawyers I’ve ever met,” praising her work. Rep. Mike Haridopolos (R-Fla.) told Newsmax she did “a remarkable job” with violent crime down over 20 percent.

Democrats were sharply critical. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) accused Bondi of “leading a White House cover-up of the Epstein files” and vowed she “will not escape accountability,” noting her congressional subpoena remains active despite her firing.

Why This Shake-Up Matters for Trump’s Second Term

This dismissal signals that no amount of loyalty insulates Trump’s cabinet from his demands. Bondi was a longtime Trump ally and fierce defender, yet she lasted just 14 months. With Blanche now at the helm – a lawyer whose entire recent career has been defending Trump personally – the Justice Department faces renewed questions about its independence.

The Epstein files saga is unlikely to end here. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), who subpoenaed Bondi, posted: “My subpoena still stands. I did it by name, not by title.”

Understanding Hezbollah: Its Role and Influence in the Middle Eastern Conflict

0

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has now stretched into its second month, with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam issuing a grim warning about the seemingly endless nature of the hostilities that have already forced a million people from their homes.

Lebanon finds itself caught in the crossfire of a broader conflict involving the United States and Israel on one side, and Iran on the other. The situation escalated after US-Israeli forces targeted Iran on February 28, prompting the Iran-backed Hezbollah to retaliate by launching rockets into northern Israel on March 2.

In response, Israel initiated a comprehensive air assault coupled with ground operations into southern Lebanon, intensifying the conflict’s scope and impact.

The Lebanese health ministry reports that over 1,300 fatalities have resulted from Israeli strikes, with the conflict displacing approximately 20% of Lebanon’s population. Israeli evacuation orders currently affect around 15% of Lebanese land.

Israel has stated its intention to establish a “buffer zone” extending to the Litani River, which flows into the Mediterranean Sea roughly 30 kilometers north of the Israeli border.

The Lebanese government has described the operation as a violation of the country’s sovereignty and the United Nations human rights chief has criticised Israel’s actions, particularly its use of widespread evacuation orders.

The conflict has also exposed tensions between Hezbollah and the Lebanese government, which banned the group’s military activities after its latest attacks.

Salem said Lebanon was “a victim of a war, one whose outcomes and end date no one can predict”.

“The positions of Israeli officials, and the practices of their army, reveal far-reaching goals, including a significant expansion in the occupation of Lebanese territories, dangerous talk about establishing buffer zones or security belts, and the displacement of more than one million Lebanese.”

What is Hezbollah?

Hezbollah is a Lebanese political party and militant group formed in 1982 after Israeli forces invaded southern Lebanon. Its name means “Party of God” in Arabic.

The group is driven by its opposition to Israel and Western influence in the Middle East and is closely aligned with Iran. It receives weapons, training and funding from Iran and acts as a proxy for the government.

It is known as a “state within a state” because it governs parts of Lebanon’s Shia-majority areas in parts of Beirut and southern Lebanon independently from the Lebanese government.

In 2006, Hezbollah fighters launched a cross-border attack against Israel, triggering a 34-day war. More than 1,100 Lebanese, mostly civilians, were killed, as well as 119 Israeli soldiers and 45 civilians.

In 2021, Hezbollah’s former leader Hassan Nasrallah — who was killed by Israeli airstrikes in 2024 — claimed the group had 100,000 trained fighters. Independent estimates put the figure at between 20,000 and 50,000.

The group is listed as a terrorist organisation by countries including Australia, the United States, Israel, Germany and the United Kingdom. The European Union lists only its military wing as a terrorist organisation.

Primarily made up of Shia Muslims, Hezbollah itself makes no distinction between its political and military wings.

What was Hezbollah’s involvement in the Hamas-Israel war?

The war began when the Palestinian group Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing more than 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

In response, Israel launched a bombardment of the Gaza Strip, killing more than 73,000 people, according to the health ministry in Gaza. A fragile ceasefire was signed last year, though both sides have been accused of breaching it.

Clashes between Hezbollah and Israel began in October 2023, when the group fired rockets in support of its ally Hamas.

The conflict escalated in 2024 when an Israeli airstrike killed Hezbollah’s longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah. Israel launched a ground invasion into southern Lebanon before the sides agreed to a ceasefire in November 2024.

Why is Hezbollah involved in the current conflict?

Hezbollah’s decision to launch fresh strikes against Israel — which it said were in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei — angered many in Lebanon who accused the group of giving Israel an excuse to escalate.

Mohanad Hage Ali, a senior fellow at the Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut, said, from Hezbollah’s perspective, entering the regional war was rational.

He said Iran was facing an existential threat, and Hezbollah “is backed and funded and trained” by Iran.

The collapse of the Islamic Republic would “basically mean the death of Hezbollah as a project”, he added.

Had Hezbollah not entered the war, Hage Ali said the group would have expected that Israel would have launched an offensive against it sooner or later.

From Hezbollah’s perspective, he said: “There’s no point in continuing to be a sitting duck until Israel finishes off your main ally and comes for you. It makes more sense that you join your ally in the war and try to achieve a ceasefire as part of a package.”

What is Hezbollah’s relationship with the Lebanese government?

After Hezbollah launched fresh strikes against Israel on 2 March, the Lebanese government banned military activities by the group and demanded it hand over its weapons.

Salam said Hezbollah’s attack showed disregard for “the will of the majority of Lebanese” and that Lebanon rejected being dragged into the regional conflict.

The decision was rejected by senior Hezbollah politician Mohammed Raad, who said there was no justification for the “government to take bold and confrontational measures against Lebanese citizens who reject occupation”.

In 2008, an attempt by the Lebanese government to outlaw Hezbollah’s military telecom network led to armed conflict, during which Hezbollah fighters took over parts of Beirut.

Paul Salem of the Middle East Institute think-tank said the decision to ban Hezbollah’s military activities was historic, but implementing it would be challenging.

“A clash is possible, and maybe a clash here and there is necessary if the state is going to behave like a state and implement its laws,” he said.

“The state is not interested in confrontation, they are very aware of the risks, and they are not going to seek a broad confrontation but this sends an important signal to Hezbollah that they have gone way beyond the pale.”

Heroic Rescue: California Toddler Survives Vicious Coyote Attack in Heart-Stopping Encounter

0

A coyote, known for previous incidents, was captured and euthanized after being filmed attempting to bite and drag a 4-year-old boy in Southern California. The event unfolded in the child’s grandparents’ driveway earlier this week.

Young Solomon sustained seven puncture wounds on his legs and torso during the terrifying encounter, which was recorded by a surveillance camera.

“I just hear him screaming, and I turn around, and I scream as well because I see the coyote on top of him,” shared Sarina Donohoo, Solomon’s mother, as she recounted the incident to FOX 11 Los Angeles.

The coyote, deemed a “repeat offender,” attacked Solomon in the driveway before being captured and “humanely euthanized” by local authorities, according to reports from FOX 11 Los Angeles.

“He bit me,” Solomon recounted. “He tried to drag me.”

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife believes the animal may be responsible for even more attacks than initially believed, according to reporting from FOX 11 Los Angeles.

The coyote may have been a “repeat offender,” linked to two additional victims reporting attacks March 26 and March 30. According to FOX 11, DNA testing linked the coyote to a separate attack on a child Feb. 11 near an elementary school.

Wildlife authorities confirmed with FOX 11 that the coyote was “humanely euthanized” Thursday using “standard protocol” for animals that attack humans.

“For a wild animal to walk up into your yard and try to snatch your grandchild, it’s like the most horrific thing in the world,” Solomon’s grandmother and property owner Stephanie Fields added.

The incident happened early in the morning, just before 9 a.m., as the boy’s mother was unloading groceries from her vehicle.

“I was so scared because I know how bad it could have been,” Sarina said, recalling the chilling incident. “My initial response was just, ‘I need to get him away.’”

The coyote had been spotted around the neighborhood, and one resident who runs a daycare recounted how she now carries both an air horn and a golf club to help keep the children in her charge safe from the predator. (FOX 11 Los Angeles)

Grandfather Stanley Fields shared that little Solomon is now undergoing a series of rabies treatments.

He got nipped three times, and now he’s going through rabies protocol,” Stanley said. “He’s 4 years old, and I just think it was a little much for a young child to experience.”

A neighbor who operates a nearby daycare told FOX 11 she now carries an air horn and a golf club for protection in the area.

Authorities have urged residents in the neighborhood to “remain vigilant” as officials confirm whether other aggressive coyotes remain in the area, according to FOX 11.

Other recommendations for residents include supervising small children, especially outdoors, and using loud noises like air horns to deter wild animals. Residents are also encouraged to secure any food waste and trash bins.

Authorities encourage witnesses to call the Carson Sheriff’s Station at 310-830-1123 for coyote attacks or California Fish & Wildlife at 858-467-4257 for coyote sightings.

Prosecutors: Man Allegedly Assaults Girlfriend’s Brother with Weightlifting Bar, Causing Brain Bleed

In a disturbing incident out of Michigan, a man is facing serious charges after allegedly attacking his girlfriend’s brother with a weightlifting bar while he slept.

Jevonn Green, aged 46, has been formally charged with several offenses, including assault with intent to murder, aggravated domestic violence, and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to a statement from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office. Given that this is purportedly his fourth offense, a conviction could result in a minimum of 25 years behind bars, with the possibility of a life sentence.

The incident took place on Sunday when Green returned to his Chesterfield Township residence, situated just northeast of Detroit. He lived there with his girlfriend and her 61-year-old brother, as reported by local authorities.

While the brother was asleep on the couch, Green is alleged to have attacked him, striking his head multiple times with a weightlifting bar. Following the attack, Green reportedly woke his girlfriend, who was asleep in another room, instructing her to call 911 for her brother’s aid, stated the prosecutor’s office.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition as of Thursday, suffering from a decompressed skull fracture and brain bleeding, officials reported.

“It is extremely troubling that a man was allegedly assaulted while he slept, completely defenseless,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said. “Domestic violence is not limited to romantic partners. If you are the victim of domestic violence, call 911 in the event of an emergency.”

Green was arrested and booked into the Macomb County Jail on a $250,000 bond. “If released, he must wear a GPS tether and submit to drug testing three times weekly” and he “cannot return to the residence where the alleged assault occurred, nor may he consume any alcohol or drugs,” the prosecutor’s office said.

The defendant’s defense attorney asked for Green to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, a request that was granted. He was arraigned in court on Thursday and is scheduled to return on April 16.

Authorities Launch Manhunt in Sydney’s North-West Following Ute Arson Incident

0
Officers are searching for a group after they allegedly smashed the windows of a home in Sydney’s north-west and set fire to a stolen ute.

In the early hours of this morning, around 2 a.m., emergency services responded to an incident on Bocks Road in Oakville. A group reportedly drove a utility vehicle onto the premises and proceeded to smash several windows.

Shortly thereafter, the group allegedly set the vehicle on fire.

Upon the arrival of police officers, the individuals fled the scene on foot, while one person managed to get into another vehicle and drive off.

Law enforcement pursued the vehicle, bringing it to a halt on Fontana Drive at The Gables. The driver, however, attempted to escape once more on foot.

A subsequent search led to the arrest of a 17-year-old boy, who was then taken to the Windsor Police Station for further questioning.

The ute was extinguished, and further investigations found that it had reportedly been stolen last month.

The occupants of the home, a man and woman in their 50s, were uninjured following the incident, and an investigation is now underway.
