SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The former assistant principal of Lanphier High School, Christopher Hampsey, has been sentenced to court supervision and community service following a guilty plea in a case involving battery against students.
According to Sangamon County court records, Hampsey admitted guilt last month to a single misdemeanor battery charge, which was the only accusation brought against him.

A couple in California faces charges of child endangerment following a tragic incident where their teenage son sustained severe injuries in a high-speed e-bike collision, despite numerous warnings about his reckless riding behavior.
Steven Leroy Crews and Jeanna Marie Gabellini, both 58 and residents of Benicia, were charged by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office on Thursday. Prosecutors claim the couple permitted their son to unlawfully ride a powerful electric motorbike for years, despite the inherent risks.
During their court appearance on Friday, the couple entered pleas of not guilty through their legal representatives.
The couple’s youngest son suffered critical injuries on September 18, 2025, around 3:05 PM, when he collided with a minivan while riding a $4,400 Surron Light Bee e-motorcycle. The crash occurred at a bustling intersection in Walnut Creek, close to De La Salle High School.
Following the accident, he was urgently transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
For his family, the aftermath was life-altering.
Gabellini, who runs MasterPeace Coaching and describes herself as a business coach and ‘law of attraction’ expert, has documented her son’s recovery in a series of blog posts.
‘No doctor could give us promises. No one could tell us if or when he’d recover,’ she wrote.
The teen suffered swelling to his brain, fractured vertebrae in his back and neck, and spent nine days in a coma, according to his mother.

‘When our son was hit by a car on his bike, we were slammed into a reality no parent wants,’ she wrote, adding that she refused to accept the possibility he might be left paralyzed or cognitively impaired.
She described clinging to faith, pushing aside ‘what ifs,’ and making plans for his future ‘as if all was on track for his 110% comeback.’
But prosecutors allege the crash came after years of warnings that went ignored.
Authorities said the teen had been riding the vehicle unlawfully between the ages of 14 and 17, and that his parents had received multiple warnings from law enforcement about his behavior.
The teen’s social media accounts also show a long-running interest in biking and motorsports, with posts dating back several years.
Officials allege the couple ignored repeated citations tied to the teen’s riding and failed to intervene.
The district attorney’s office said Crews and Gabellini ‘willfully and unlawfully permitted a child to be injured or placed in a situation where the child’s health is endangered.’
Police said the teen had been riding a Surron Light Bee, a high-powered electric motorcycle capable of speeds far beyond traditional e-bikes, without a license and in a reckless manner.

Investigators said he was traveling at unsafe speeds before colliding with the minivan.
The driver of the van was not injured and remained at the scene.
The crash happened at the intersection of Treat Boulevard and Arkell Road.
The case comes amid growing concern over high-speed electric bikes and similar vehicles, particularly among teenagers.
Electric bikes and scooters are governed by different rules depending on their power and speed, a distinction that has become central to enforcement.
While standard e-bikes are generally treated like bicycles and do not require a license, registration or insurance, higher-powered Surron-style electric motorcycles are treated as motor vehicles under California law.
That means riders must have a license, registration and follow the same rules as motorcycles.

These vehicles can reach speeds well above 30mph and require helmets for all riders and use on public roadways.
By contrast, most e-bikes fall into three categories: pedal-assist models capped at 20mph, throttle-assisted versions with the same limit, and faster Class 3 bikes that can reach 28mph but require riders to be at least 16 and wear helmets.
Authorities say confusion over these distinctions, combined with the growing popularity of high-speed electric bikes, has contributed to a surge in dangerous riding.
The charges also follow new California laws that took effect on January 1, increasing accountability for parents.
Under the updated rules, parents can now be cited and held financially or legally responsible if their children ride electric motorcycles illegally.
Police in Petaluma have already cited multiple parents under the law after a string of incidents involving reckless juvenile riders being injured after hitting cars.
Earlier this month, a 16-year-old rider fatally struck a 60-year-old nurse in Davis.
In another case, a couple filed a lawsuit after an 11-year-old riding an e-bike triggered a chain-reaction crash that killed their four-year-old son.
New California laws that took effect in 2025 now allow parents to be cited or held legally responsible if their children ride such vehicles illegally, and similar cases have already been filed across the state
Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton warned that the rise of electric bikes and electric motorcycles presents serious safety risks.
‘E-bikes and e-motorcycles are more prevalent on city streets,’ she said. ‘Parents must understand the dangers these vehicles can pose to children if operated unlawfully and without proper driver education.’
Authorities are urging parents to think carefully before allowing minors to ride high-powered electric vehicles, warning that the consequences may extend beyond traffic violations.
Further regulations are already on the horizon.
Starting in 2026, all e-bikes in California must be equipped with a red rear reflector or light visible from about 500 feet.
For riders under 18, helmet violations may be dismissed if they complete an approved safety course and show proof of a properly fitted helmet.

The case centers around Dr. Gerhardt Konig, an anesthesiologist accused of attempting to murder his wife. According to his former supervisor, Dr. Jonathan Waters, someone in Konig’s profession would possess both the expertise and the means to commit such an act. Waters remarked, “For an anesthesiologist, murder would not be difficult,” during an interview on “Good Morning America.” He explained that the drugs typically used in their field are designed to push the boundaries of life and death.
Waters expressed his disbelief over the charges against Konig, whom he once mentored. “They seemed to have it all,” he reflected, grappling with the shocking turn of events. “I genuinely can’t comprehend what went wrong.”
Waters, who supervised Konig, said he was stunned by the allegations.
“They had everything going for them. I truly don’t understand what happened,” he said.

He described Konig as intelligent and said he never saw him lose his temper — a characterization that sharply contrasts with the violent allegations now at the center of the doctor’s Maui trial.
“He was a smart guy… quite intelligent,” Waters said. “I never saw Gerhardt have a temper or lose his temper.”

As Waters spoke publicly, jurors in Maui were shown disturbing police body camera footage this week capturing the aftermath of the alleged attack on the fourth day of trial.
The video shows Konig’s wife, Arielle Konig, bloodied and stumbling out of a remote hiking trail on Oahu after two hikers called 911, reporting they heard her screaming for help.
The hikers stayed with her, helping her to the ground and trying to keep her conscious as blood ran down her face.
Honolulu Police Officer Kevin Chun testified that she appeared exhausted, short of breath and confused when he arrived.
Prosecutors allege Gerhardt Konig attacked his wife during the hike after discovering she was allegedly having an emotional affair.
They say he tried to push her off a cliff, then attempted to inject her with a syringe before repeatedly striking her in the head with a rock.

Jurors were also shown photos of the scene, including blood on leaves, branches and the ground near a cliff edge, along with a rock believed to have been used in the attack.
Authorities say Konig fled after hikers intervened.

Police later spotted him with what appeared to be blood on his shirt, triggering a chase before officers took him into custody after he resisted arrest.
Investigators also recovered a backpack, cellphone and a second bag allegedly containing medical supplies tied to the defendant.
His defense team claims Arielle Konig was the aggressor and that he struck her with a rock in self-defense.
Gerhardt Konig has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

ATLANTA () — Georgia is once more stepping up its initiatives to combat human trafficking by providing training opportunities for businesses, as announced by Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) on Friday.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, over 27 million individuals worldwide are ensnared in human trafficking. Atlanta has been identified by the FBI as one of the 14 U.S. cities with alarmingly high incidents of child sex trafficking, Raffensperger highlighted.
Data from Human Trafficking Courts reveals that four out of every 100,000 residents in Georgia fall victim to human trafficking.
“Human trafficking is a multibillion-dollar enterprise, ranking alongside arms dealing as the world’s second-largest illegal trade,” stated Secretary Raffensperger. “This heinous activity is taking place right in our neighborhoods, affecting both city and rural areas alike. To abolish this atrocity, we must unite in our efforts to dismantle trafficking once and for all.”
The initiative, known as Georgia Businesses Against Trafficking (GBAT), aims to empower businesses with the knowledge to identify and report instances of human trafficking effectively.
After registering for GBAT, businesses will receive a resource kit including educational materials, signage and window clings. The program also offers free virtual human trafficking training sessions for GBAT members through a collaboration with Wellspring Living and Street Grace, two Georgia based non-profits working to fight human trafficking.
“This is not an issue where there can be too many cooks in the kitchen,” the Secretary added. “The more citizens know what to look for, the more we can hold these criminals accountable.”
Secretary Raffensperger was joined by GBAT members from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Georgia Hotel and Lodging Association and Wellspring Living for the announcement.

In a tragic incident in Indiana, a 4-year-old boy, unable to walk, talk, or feed himself, was discovered dead in a disorderly basement closet, allegedly kept there by his mother and her partner, leading to serious charges against the pair.
Angel Lovely, 37, and Nicholas Bergdoll, 36, are each charged with neglect of a dependent causing death, as revealed by court documents concerning the case of young Malichi Lovely.
At 4:25 p.m. on March 23, officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Monticello Drive following a report of an unresponsive child. Upon their arrival, they witnessed Lovely attempting CPR on Malichi, who showed no signs of life. This was detailed in a report by The Indianapolis Star.
Emergency medical teams rushed Malichi to Riley Children’s Health, where he was declared dead soon after arrival.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office has yet to determine the precise cause and manner of Malichi’s death, as mentioned in a report from local Fox affiliate WXIN reported.
Court documents obtained by the Star describe the condition of the basement where Malichi was found as filled with “Christmas stuff,” where he “often slept” and was “often kept.”
The boy’s three older siblings told investigators that “he is trapped in the little room” and that their mother “keeps him in the closet and does not pay attention to him,” court records state.
Malichi, who had extensive medical needs, including cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus, was found unresponsive in the closet with blood on his mouth, shirt, pillow, and blanket, according to court documents cited by the Star.
Investigators said the boy had been placed in the closet the night before his death. One sibling reported hearing gagging noises coming from inside that morning before leaving for school, but the mother later told police she was not aware.
A daughter who returned home later that day told detectives she opened the closet door and saw blood coming from Malichi’s mouth, his eyes rolled back.
Bergdoll reportedly told investigators he had only been in a relationship with the boy’s mother for a few months and said, “I’m not going to tell her how to f—in’ raise her kids.” He also claimed he was asleep in the basement and did not know the child was choking or in distress.
Lovely told police she would sometimes put the boy in the closet when he would not stop screaming, claiming she would “wheel him in, leave the door cracked, and take a few minutes to just breathe,” according to court records.
The investigation also revealed the boy had a history of severe medical issues and had previously been noted as underweight and suffering from malnutrition, according to court records. He had briefly been removed from his mother’s care in 2024 amid allegations of medical neglect before custody was later restored.
Lovely and Bergdoll remain held in the Marion County Jail. Their next court appearance is scheduled for March 30.
Sony is set to implement price increases for several PlayStation models for the second time in a little over seven months. The adjustments, affecting both the base and digital editions of the PS5, the PS5 Pro, and the PlayStation Portal Remote Player, will be effective starting in April.
The announcement was made through a blog post on Friday morning, with Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Vice President of Global Marketing, citing “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” as the reason behind this decision.
“We understand that price changes have an impact on our community,” the blog post noted, “and after a thorough evaluation, we concluded that this was a necessary step to continue providing innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players across the globe.”
Meanwhile, Netflix has also announced a price increase, sparking curiosity about how much extra subscribers will need to pay.
The recommended retail price of a PS5 console is increasing $649.99, up from $549.99 (an 18% increase) and the PS5 Digital Edition will cost $599.99, up from $499.99 (a 20% increase). The PS5 Pro, meanwhile, jumps in price from $749.99 to $899.99 (another 20% increase) while the handheld PlayStation Portal gaming accessory is going from $199.99 to $249.99 (a 25% increase).

These recommended retail prices are effective as of April 2, Sony said.
The PS5 and its Digital Edition were originally released in November 2020 at suggested retail prices of $499 and $399, respectively. The PS5 Pro, which launched in November 2024, originally cost $699.99. The PlayStation Portal was released in 2023 and priced at $199.99.
Sony Interactive Entertainment had previously hiked prices for its PS5 models in August 2025, raising each by $50 over their original launch prices. At the time, Tomatis pointed to “a challenging economic environment.”
A representative for PlayStation was not immediately available to share additional information on the factors that prompted the increases. But outlets including IGN and Bloomberg had speculated that a shortage of memory chips — due to an increase in demand for AI technologies — could be to blame. (IGN and The Verge had also pointed to President Trump’s tariffs as a factor for previous price hikes in the gaming industry).
Gamers who commented under PlayStation’s own blog post largely appeared to be disappointed or shocked by the PS5’s new pricing, with one calling it “insane” and another finding it “disgusting.”
“I’ll never forget what it was like to buy a console three years after its release it already cost half the price, and the best part was that it was a slim version,” one person said.
“If I did not already own a PS5 I would certainly would not buy one at that price,” another wrote.
Renowned royal photographer Chris Jackson has shared his insights into the lives of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children, noting that the young royals are becoming increasingly aware of their unique upbringing.
During an event at N. Peal on the Upper East Side, Jackson discussed his latest book, “Modern Majesty: The British Royal Family in a New Era,” with Page Six. He reflected on the rare glimpses he gets into the lives of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
“It’s a delight to see them growing up,” Jackson noted, speaking of the children who are now 12, 11, and 7 years old, respectively. Despite their limited public appearances, their development is evident to those who follow the royal family closely.
Jackson has observed that the young royals are gradually coming to terms with the fact that their experiences differ vastly from those of typical children. “They must be starting to understand that events like Trooping The Colour aren’t part of a usual childhood,” he remarked.
“I’m guessing they realize it’s not normal to be in these situations,” he said, referring to their royal appearances like Trooping The Colour.
“It’s lovely to see them interacting together,” he added.
While Charlotte is the spitting image of her dad, Jackson described her as a mini version of Kate.
“She’s got great poise,” he said of the little princess.
Jackson was particularly touched by a candid snapshot of Charlotte that he captured during her carriage ride at the 2024 Trooping the Colour.
“She had quite a kind of a sense of focus in this picture,” Jackson said of the photo, which is included in his new book, adding, “I love that moment.”
Jackson recalled another “particularly funny” moment caught on his camera at the 2025 VE Day parade when George’s siblings were “joking about his hair.”
“I get all these kind of little moments,” Jackson said, sharing that it’s lovely that he gets a front seat view of George’s “father-son relationship” with the Prince of Wales.
“Photographing them over the years has been really special,” he said.
Jackson divulged that shooting the portrait for Charles’ 70th birthday was his “most unusual royal shoot.”
“I had one of the people from the palace dress up as a bear,” he recalled. “Everyone was chuckling and laughing.”
“It made a lovely kind of candid moment with the children, which was kind of a contrast to the more formal picture that you need for history,” he added.
Elsewhere in the interview, Jackson shared some insights into Charles’ playful personality.
“He has an incredible ability to connect with people from different cultures around the world,” Jackson said. “He’s always got a joke or, you know, something that’s going to make the person he’s talking to feel relaxed.”
As for his experience working with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, Jackson said he had “a great experience photographing them both.”
“There’s all these different characters in the royal family,” he explained. “So I’ve always enjoyed photographing them.”

“If you miss them, you can cry,” she continued. “You can talk to them. I talk to my dad every day. … I just tell him about my day, how I’m feeling and I tell my family how I’m doing. And I know he can hear me, but I can’t hear him.”
Elsewhere in the video, the 10-year-old noted that her late father is “in a good place” and he’s “not in pain anymore, he’s in heaven.”
Emilia concluded by declaring she “still has to believe in miracles.”
She also thanked those who donated to her family’s GoFundMe created by her mom’s friends.
“I know that he was a good man. A lot of people loved him and people prayed for him, and he was loved by … many, many people,” Emilia gushed.
James died on Feb. 11 at age 48 following an almost three-year battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer.
“He met his final days with courage, faith and grace,” Kimberly, who married James in 2010, announced at the time. “There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come.”
The “Varsity Blues” star was diagnosed in the summer of 2023, waiting until November 2024 to go public with the news.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — A judge has ruled in favor of using Missouri’s new U.S. House districts, which have received support from President Donald Trump, for the upcoming midterm elections, even though a voter referendum on the map may still occur.
This decision by Cole County Circuit Judge Brian Stumpe is a significant win for Republicans, who are aiming to secure an additional congressional seat in the November elections through these new districts.
Critics of the new district boundaries argued that they should have been automatically halted in December when over 300,000 signatures were collected for a statewide referendum on the issue. However, Judge Stumpe stated that the opponents did not have the legal standing to sue. He further noted that the map would only be suspended if the petition is later found to be legally valid and contains enough legitimate signatures.
According to state law, Missouri’s Republican Secretary of State, Denny Hoskins, has until August 4th—the date of Missouri’s primary election—to verify the validity of the referendum petition.
Missouri’s situation is part of a larger national redistricting conflict that started last summer. President Trump urged Texas Republicans to redraw House districts to favor the GOP in the midterms.
