The suspect accused of murdering a Loyola University Chicago student is scheduled to appear in court for the first time, following a delay due to his treatment for tuberculosis.

Authorities allege that 25-year-old Jose Medina-Medina fatally attacked Sheridan Gorman on March 19, at approximately 1 a.m., while she was on a pier with friends. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Medina-Medina entered the United States illegally on May 9, 2023, and was initially apprehended but later released under the Biden administration’s policies.

The scheduled hearing for Medina-Medina was originally set for Monday but was postponed due to his ongoing tuberculosis treatment. The court session is now rescheduled for Friday at 11:30 a.m. local time, during which prosecutors are anticipated to disclose further details regarding the case. Medina-Medina faces charges including murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and illegal weapon possession.

A spokesman from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office informed Fox News Digital on Friday that Medina-Medina remains in the medical division of the county jail. Earlier in the week, he was hospitalized before being transferred to the jail’s medical facility.

Criminal defense attorney Donna Rotunno told Fox News Digital the decision to postpone Medina-Medina’s hearing on Monday was likely made by the Cook County Sheriff’s Department and medical personnel. He will likely appear virtually as officials are concerned about the disease Medina-Medina has, she added.

A native of Yorktown Heights, New York, Gorman attended Yorktown High School and was described in an obituary as someone who “had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and believed in.”

“People often say someone ‘lit up a room’ or had ‘inner and outer beauty,’ but in Sheridan’s case, those phrases fall way too short. She radiated something even greater—a rare and unmistakable warmth, a spirit that was vibrant, compassionate, and full of life. She was funny, kind, and deeply loving, with a heart that made space for everyone,” her obituary states. “She loved fiercely—her family, her friends, her community, and her faith. She brought people together, lifted them up, and made the ordinary moments feel extraordinary simply by being in them.”

In a statement ahead of Friday’s hearing, Gorman’s family said the shooting doesn’t change the way they view Loyola University Chicago, where Sheridan was a freshman.

“We have been asked whether this tragedy changes how we view Loyola University Chicago. The answer is absolutely not. Sheradin and our family love Loyola,” the family wrote. “We’ve also been asked whether students should feel safe there. The answer is yes. Sheridan chose Loyola because she felt at home there. She was happy, she was thriving, and she felt safe in that community. That was our experience as her parents as well.”

“What happened to Sheridan was not a reflection of the Loyola community. It was the result of a failure outside of it,” the family added.

A police source told Fox News earlier that the shooting was an apparent ambush, adding that the suspect was reportedly wearing some kind of face mask or covering.

An arrest report obtained by Fox News Digital states that, after the shooting, Medina-Medina was captured on security video in his apartment building lobby waiting for an elevator and wasn’t masked. A building engineer told police he knew the suspect who had a “very distinct limp and gait.”

Pictures of the suspect’s face were sent to a police database, and information from U.S. Customs and Border Protection identified the suspect as Medina-Medina. 

Court documents obtained by Fox News Digital show that Medina-Medina told officials he was living at Leone Beach Park fieldhouse in Rogers Park in 2023, which was being used as a city-sponsored shelter for migrants. Medina-Medina was arrested in 2023 and charged with shoplifting after he allegedly stole just over $130 in merchandise from a Macy’s in downtown Chicago. He failed to appear for court hearings related to that case, and an arrest warrant remained active until the alleged murder.

Paul Pierce, a celebrated figure in NBA history, faces a significant child support claim, as reports emerge that he is being asked to provide nearly $30,000 monthly. This request stems from a paternity lawsuit initiated in January by Princess Santiago, an event coordinator based in Los Angeles.

Documents obtained by TMZ reveal that Santiago is seeking not only financial support but also sole custody of the child. Her demands include a substantial $29,811 per month in child support, alongside a request for $100,000 to cover her legal expenses. Additionally, Santiago insists that Pierce undergo a DNA test to confirm paternity.

Beyond monthly support, Santiago is asking the former Boston Celtics star and NBA champion to shoulder half of the ‘reasonable expenses’ associated with the pregnancy, delivery, and post-birth period, which she estimates at $18,846.

In the court filings, Santiago argues that Pierce’s earnings throughout his career should reflect on his ability to meet these financial obligations. She claims he amassed between $195 million and $203 million in NBA salary alone. Furthermore, Santiago references Pierce’s public statements, suggesting he managed his finances in such a way that he didn’t rely on his NBA salary for personal or family expenses, relying instead on his endorsement deals.

In the latest filing, Santiago claims Pierce earned ‘approximately $195million to $203m in total NBA salary’ and that he ‘has publicly stated that during his NBA career he made enough money from endorsements that he did not have to use his NBA salary to pay his expenses or generous expenditures on his family, romantic partners and family.’

Back in January when she made the initial filing, Santiago said in a statement: ‘I filed for paternity papers after multiple attempts to resolve this privately. Paul Pierce is the father of my son, King, and I am simply asking for a paternity test so the truth can be confirmed.’

This is the latest in a string of public embarrassments for Pierce. 

In October, he was charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of driving with .08 per cent blood alcohol content after he was found asleep at the wheel of his Range Rover SUV in the middle of a traffic-jammed highway.

On the night of his arrest, California Highway Patrol shut down multiple lanes of Highway 101 to investigate a crash. It left Pierce and many other motorists stuck in gridlocked traffic for nearly an hour.

When the highway was re-opened at around 10:30pm local time, Pierce was found sleeping at the wheel just south of the crash.

Pierce posted an image of rows and rows of cars with brake lights on and captioned it: ‘Imagine being stuck in stand still traffic for 45 mins and falling asleep.’

After being taken into custody, Pierce posted on social media that he simply fell asleep for ‘being old and tired.’

‘I took this picture that night because I never been in stand still traffic for this long,’ he said.

‘I’m old, I’m tired, and I fell asleep. I’m good y’all thanks for the love.’

Former Boston Celtics star Pierce won an NBA championship with the team back in 2008

The California Highway Patrol claimed that Pierce, who provided officers with a blood test, showed signs of alcohol impairment when they approached his vehicle.

Pierce has pleaded not guilty in the case.

Since retiring in 2017, the 48-year-old California native has worked as an NBA analyst for two sports cable stations, both of which ultimately fired him.

In 2021, Pierce was let go by ESPN after livestreaming himself playing poker with bikini-clad women as the group enjoyed some alcohol and marijuana.

The Truth, as he was known during his playing days, resurfaced at FS1 in 2024, where he served as a regular contributor on Undisputed with Skip Bayless.

That show was later cancelled and Pierce moved to another show, Speak, which was also shut down.

Just before starting a two-week break, the Senate reached an agreement to conclude the 42-day partial government shutdown, which had been largely focused on federal immigration enforcement issues.

In a voice vote that took place after 2 a.m., the Senate approved a measure to fund the Department of Homeland Security, except for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and certain components of Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The legislation notably excluded many immigration enforcement reforms demanded by Democrats following the fatal shootings of two Americans in Minnesota during President Trump’s immigration campaign.

This week saw some progress in negotiations, but discussions eventually stalled. Democrats argued that the Republicans’ proposal to fund the entirety of DHS fell short of addressing their concerns.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, representing New York, stated that his party remained steadfast.

“Through it all, Senate Democrats stood united — there was no wavering, no backing down,” Schumer remarked on the Senate floor following the vote. “We made it clear: no blank check for a lawless ICE and Border Patrol.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, said Thursday afternoon that Republicans sent Democrats their “last and final” offer. 

Shortly after, the Senate began a procedural vote on DHS funding, which was held open for more than six hours in hopes that there would be a breakthrough in negotiations. The vote ultimately failed. 

But Mr. Trump said he would sign an emergency order to pay TSA agents as travelers face long waits in airport security lines, which Thune said alleviated “the immediate pressure” to reach a deal. 

Mr. Trump’s announcement appeared to pave the way for ending the impasse, which threatened to cut short the Senate’s recess. 

After Friday’s vote, Thune ruled out the possibility of immigration enforcement reforms, telling reporters that Democrats “kissed that opportunity goodbye” by failing to provide funding for those agencies. 

“I think that ship has sailed,” he said. 

Republicans have vowed to fund immigration enforcement agencies through the reconciliation process, though the strategy is expected to face more hurdles with the GOP’s narrow majority and a lack of Democratic support.
