Jay Slater’s mother has returned to Tenerife to retrace the final known steps of her 19-year-old son for a new documentary. In the programme, she also reveals the horror of being shown photographs of Jay’s dead body.

Jay disappeared in June 2024, triggering a huge search operation across Tenerife. His case also prompted a wave of conspiracy theories and online abuse, with trolls making unsubstantiated claims about what had happened and targeting his family and friends.

Two years on, his mother Debbie Duncan remains haunted by the question of whether her son suffered during his final moments before he was found dead in the hills of northern Tenerife.

For Channel 5’s Cause Of Death, the 57-year-old returned to Tenerife’s Rural de Teno national park alongside Jay’s uncle, Glen Duncan. Together, they revisited the route he took before falling to his death.

Ms Duncan also described how Spanish police showed her images of Jay’s body when she returned to the island to collect his phone.

Ms Duncan, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, said: ‘I did think about it (viewing his body) and thought, I don’t think I can. But then, when we had to go back to Tenerife to get paperwork from the courts and to collect his phone, to my horror there were images of Jay. I thought my heart was going to stop beating.

‘Whenever people say, “How did you know it was Jay?” Well, it was Jay. My beautiful boy.’

She later visited the place where Jay left the road and broke down as she laid flowers for her son. Ms Duncan said Jay would have been ‘so sorry for the mistakes he made’.

The documentary was filmed only weeks after Ms Duncan received the delayed Spanish post-mortem report. It confirmed that Jay died after falling into a ravine measuring 82ft in depth.

In another section of the programme, she discusses the findings from both the Spanish and Home Office post-mortems with pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd.

Dr Shepherd, who carried out the Home Office post-mortem, told The Sun that, given the trolling Ms Duncan had endured, it was ‘really important she knew the truth’.

He said: ‘She wanted to know how his injuries would have affected him. I was able to tell her that yes, it was an awful injury, and yes, it killed him. But the head injury was so severe that it probably would have killed him immediately. It was the end — there was no pain and suffering.’

Despite the evidence, conspiracy theorists circulated false claims, including suggestions that Jay’s disappearance had been a ‘revenge attack’ linked to his past behaviour. Some even questioned Ms Duncan’s conduct and asked why she had not appeared visibly more distressed.

Jay’s body was found four weeks after his disappearance in a remote area near Masca. An inquest in 2025 concluded that he died on June 17, 2024, from injuries consistent with a ‘heavy fall from height’. Nevertheless, online sleuths continued to spread fabricated claims about the case.

Dr Shepherd said his examination established the cause of death as head injuries. Jay’s body showed no evidence that he had been restrained or assaulted, but the findings did not stop further abusive messages.

Speaking on This Morning earlier this year, Ms Duncan said: ‘It’s just never ended, two years on almost, and they just keep coming – it’s going round in circles, the comments about, “He was involved in the mafia and drug dealing”, and then it gets really personal.

‘[Trolls have been] calling his family, calling me [saying] “they’re drug dealers… he had a bad upbringing”, it just got really personal.’

‘They don’t know us, they don’t know our family, they don’t know Jay but yet they just judge… and the conspiracies started almost immediately.’

Last year, Debbie hit back at ‘disgusting’ online trolls after the family were bombarded with more than 30 million videos speculating about the case.

She first revealed she was calling for a law change to tackle the spread of misinformation and online abuse during the investigation into a missing persons case back in October 2025 and has been campaigning for Jay’s Law over the past 12 months.

Jay went missing during his first holiday without his parents, after partying at the NRG music festival and Papagayo nightclub in Playa de Las Americas.

After the event died down, he got into a car with two men he’d met on the holiday and drove to their Airbnb in the village of Masca, about 20 miles away.

After leaving the property, he phoned his friend Lucy Law saying he was lost in the mountains and his other friend Bradley Geoghegan to tell them he was trekking home after missing a bus.

When he failed to return to his accommodation he was reported missing.

Before long, dozens of conspiracy theories about Jay’s whereabouts were posted online.

Some of the theories claimed that he had been kidnapped by drug dealers and murdered in the mountains after losing a bag of drugs, while others claimed he had staged his own death or been killed by relatives.

Kylie Minogue’s AFL Grand Final entertainment debut sparked a wave of disappointment among viewers watching the pre-game show on Saturday.

The 58-year-old Australian pop superstar performed a 20-minute set at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, reportedly earning $3 million for the high-profile appearance.

Minogue began with her 2001 hit Love At First Sight, but many fans at home quickly criticised the sound and staging, with some branding the performance “horrendously bad.”

“So far Kylie isn’t really doing it for me,” one viewer posted online. Another described the set as “Kylie doing karaoke versions of her own songs.”

A third commenter acknowledged Minogue’s status as an Australian music icon, but added: “This has been horrendously bad.”

“This Kylie pre-game performance is bloody shocking — she’s not even singing,” another social media user claimed.

The criticism continued as viewers questioned the overall production. “This pre-show is very, very ordinary. The band doesn’t seem to be playing at all, and I’m not sure Kylie was a great choice,” one person wrote.

“I like Kylie, but the sound isn’t good,” another viewer commented, while a third said fans were viewing the performance through “rose-coloured glasses” and insisted it was “not very good at all.”

Several viewers also took aim at the audio mix and the timing of the dancers accompanying the Padam Padam hitmaker.

“Is this supposed to sound like a backyard karaoke version of a Kylie concert?” one frustrated fan asked.

Another offered a more measured assessment, praising Minogue’s performance skills and the visuals while criticising the sound. “Kylie is a great performer and the visuals are good, but her sound is way off. That’s what we’re judging it by, and so far this is pretty average. What a shame.”

“Is it just me, or does her audio seem off?” one user asked. Another added: “Every dancer is out of time, making Kylie look second-class.”

Despite the backlash, other fans rushed to defend the Melbourne-born singer and praised her contribution to the AFL Grand Final pre-game entertainment.

“Putting recency bias aside, this is the greatest pre-game performance of all time,” one supporter declared.

Another wrote: “I have to say Kylie is killing it during the pre-game entertainment. Absolutely brilliant!”

“Anyone saying this is bad needs to learn how to have fun,” a third fan argued.

Kylie opened her set with Love At First Sight before performing some of her biggest hits, including The Loco-Motion, Can’t Get You Out of My Head and Confide In Me. 

She then later sang her latest chart-topper Padam Padam with G Flip. 

Ahead of her pre-game performance, Kylie revealed she felt ‘nervous’ about her spectacular, which featured around 100 dancers and her biggest hits.

‘I am nervous, excited right now. I am all those things,’ she said during a press conference in Melbourne on Friday, according to News 24.

‘When it comes to just about to go on, maybe I will feel right at home. I don’t know.’ 

Kylie has been rehearsing at the MCG all week for the footy gig, looking far younger than her years as she donned a series of fashionable looks.

At one stage, Kylie reached death-defying heights as she was lifted high above the stadium on a small podium while going through her setlist.

Rigged up with a safety harness to prevent her from plunging to the ground below, Kylie launched into a high-octane song and dance routine.

Aided by a whole team of helpers, she later changed into a distressed shirt dress, this time with the words ‘I’m home’ emblazoned across the front.

The Padam Padam hitmaker appeared before a sell-out crowd at the 100,000-seat MCG.

Her 20-minute gig is set to net the pint-sized pop star a hefty payday.

Kylie is believed to be walking home with a whopping $3million for her highly anticipated show.

Her enormous payday was reported by New Idea, after the AFL recently confirmed that Kylie was on their ‘wish list’ for some time.

A little-known businessman has become a near-permanent fixture alongside Kimberly Guilfoyle as Donald Trump Jr.’s former fiancée travels across Europe promoting multibillion-dollar US energy projects.

Christos Marafatsos, 39, has attended so many high-level meetings with the US ambassador to Greece that several foreign officials believed he was serving as her chief of staff.

Marafatsos is neither a diplomat nor an embassy staff member. He is a private businessman and registered lobbyist for Aktor Group, a major Greek construction company.

Aktor is also the company Guilfoyle has repeatedly highlighted as she urges European countries to move away from Russian energy and increase imports of American liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to the Wall Street Journal.

Marafatsos’s constant presence has left officials across southeastern Europe questioning the increasingly indistinct boundary between diplomacy, politics and private business during the Trump administration.

Guilfoyle, 57, has assumed an unusually prominent diplomatic role since arriving in Athens last fall. She has traveled throughout the Balkans to promote a proposed “vertical gas corridor,” a route intended to bring US LNG through Greece and transport it north toward Ukraine.

The Journal reported that Guilfoyle has also consistently promoted Aktor, a relatively new player in the gas sector that has partnered with Greek state-backed energy company DEPA.

During a visit to Bulgaria this spring, Guilfoyle reportedly told people there that the Bulgarian government should work with Aktor.

“There is no doubt that this is kind of an official position of the US government,” one person familiar with the discussions told the Journal.

Marafatsos was seated beside Guilfoyle during a meeting with Bulgaria’s president.

His appearance drew added attention because Aktor’s chief executive had flown Guilfoyle into the country on a private jet, according to the WSJ.

Several people who took part in meetings with Guilfoyle and Marafatsos, including government officials, told the newspaper that he did not disclose his connection to Aktor.

Earlier this month, a Journal reporter saw Guilfoyle and Marafatsos arrive together at an international energy conference in Thessaloniki. They were traveling in the back of a black BMW at the head of the US convoy.

Marafatsos entered the hotel through a separate entrance, out of sight of photographers waiting outside.

His involvement is especially unusual given his professional background.

Raised in Maryland, Marafatsos previously co-founded a produce distribution company in the Washington area. His business interests have also included real estate consulting and an IMAX 3D attraction focused on the Acropolis.

His lobbying career is comparatively new.

Marafatsos registered to lobby for Aktor in November, just days after Guilfoyle arrived in Athens, according to federal records cited by the Journal.

Aktor has paid him $160,000 through June to help ‘establish connections’ with the Executive Office of the President, State Department and Energy Department.

He subsequently added three other Greece-linked businesses to his roster and reported more than $440,000 in US lobbying income over nine months.

Former US officials have raised concerns about the arrangement.

Robin Brooks, a 21-year Foreign Service veteran who served as National Security Council director for the Balkans and Central Europe under President Joe Biden, called the promotion of a foreign company by an American ambassador ‘absolutely problematic.’

Bringing a registered lobbyist into meetings with foreign officials, she added, ‘calls into question whether the meeting is advancing American interests or advancing some sort of private interest.’

Guilfoyle and the administration strongly reject suggestions that she has behaved improperly.

A US Embassy official said Guilfoyle traveled to Bulgaria ‘to advance American interests: increasing sales of US LNG to European partners and decreasing European dependence on Russian gas.’

The official said she remained in ‘full compliance with State Department guidance.’

Guilfoyle’s lawyer Jesse Binnall said she has worked with companies throughout the energy industry and has not focused exclusively on Aktor. He also said her official meetings are arranged through embassy channels rather than Marafatsos.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Guilfoyle as an ‘incredibly effective advocate for the President’s agenda,’ adding that both he and Trump ‘greatly value’ her work.

Marafatsos said he was ‘proud to champion commercial initiatives that advance U.S. interests and create lasting economic opportunity in Greece and Southeastern Europe.’

Aktor’s lawyers also rejected claims Guilfoyle improperly promoted the company, saying its involvement in the vertical corridor began before ‘any contacts’ with the ambassador.

Whatever the controversy, Aktor’s access has soared.

Its joint venture with DEPA, Atlantic-SEE LNG, has struck agreements or memorandums with companies across Bulgaria, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania.

Guilfoyle also helped Aktor secure a proposed $6 billion deal in Albania that, if completed, would see the country purchase gas through the company until 2050.

Not every deal is guaranteed to materialize. Ukraine’s state-owned gas company told the Journal on Friday that negotiations over future Atlantic-SEE purchases had halted.

Marafatsos’ relationship with Guilfoyle stretches back years.

He became involved with Trump’s political operation during his first presidential campaign and later chaired Greek Voices for Trump.

After Guilfoyle’s nomination as ambassador, Marafatsos reportedly helped prepare her for her Senate confirmation hearing, attended her swearing-in and became an increasingly close adviser.

Trump himself even singled him out during a Greek Independence Day event at the White House.

‘Good looking guy, he is,’ the president declared.

Guilfoyle’s arrival in Greece followed her very public split from Trump Jr, whom she began dating during Trump’s first term.

After photos emerged of Don Jr with Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson, Trump announced in December that Guilfoyle would become his ambassador to Greece.

Since arriving, the former Fox News personality has embraced the role with characteristic flair, mixing meetings with presidents and ministers with fashion shows, art galas and social media posts to her nearly two million Instagram followers.

But it is Marafatsos who has increasingly emerged as the intriguing figure at her side.

People who have attended meetings with the pair say Guilfoyle routinely introduces him simply with: ‘This is Christos.’

She has also allegedly directed people to send information or follow up with him after meetings.

One investor told the Journal he was surprised to discover afterward that Marafatsos worked for Aktor because the lobbyist had not disclosed the relationship during their meeting.

And earlier this month, Marafatsos was once again beside Guilfoyle as she prepared to address officials from nine countries at the Thessaloniki energy conference.

Before she took the stage, Guilfoyle handed him her phone – her lawyer said it was because her dress had no pockets.

As Guilfoyle’s diplomatic footprint across southeastern Europe grows, so too does the presence of the private businessman and lobbyist who has repeatedly appeared at her side, despite holding no official role in American diplomacy.
