As people enter their 50s, many observe that their waistlines start to widen, even if their weight on the scale seems unchanged. Factors like a slowing metabolism, diminishing muscle mass, and increased sedentary habits contribute to a thicker midsection and a weakened core. While some might instinctively resort to crunches, hoping they’ll trim their waist, these exercises target only a portion of the abdominal muscles. They fall short of delivering the total-body strength and calorie expenditure necessary for sustained transformation.
Achieving a slimmer waist involves engaging multiple muscle groups, not just focusing on the abs. Standing exercises that utilize your legs, hips, shoulders, and core require more energy and teach your deep abdominal muscles to stabilize the spine during everyday activities. This holistic approach not only tones the muscles around your waist but also promotes better posture, often making your midsection appear slimmer just by standing taller.
In my experience coaching adults over 50, the most significant changes come from dedicating time to functional movements that engage several muscle groups simultaneously, rather than performing endless floor exercises. These five routine exercises build core stability, enhance balance, and boost overall strength, contributing to a more defined waistline. Integrate them into your morning schedule, and you’ll start your day feeling empowered and robust from within.
Standing Cross-Body Knee Drives
Whenever someone wants to wake up their core first thing in the morning, this movement usually tops my list. Bringing the knee across the body forces the obliques, lower abdominals, and hip muscles to work together while the supporting leg strengthens your balance. I encourage clients to move slowly enough to feel every repetition instead of rushing through the exercise. Many notice their posture improves within a few weeks because the deep core muscles become much more active. It’s a simple movement with tremendous carryover into everyday life.
How to Do It
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
- Lift one knee across your body toward the opposite elbow.
- Rotate your torso slightly.
- Return with control.
- Alternate sides.
- Continue for 45 to 60 seconds.
Standing Wood Chops
The core spends much of the day resisting and controlling rotation, making wood chops one of my favorite functional exercises. This movement strengthens the obliques, shoulders, hips, and abdominal muscles while teaching your body to rotate smoothly and safely. Clients often tell me they feel muscles working that crunches never seemed to reach. I especially like how the exercise mimics real-life twisting movements like loading groceries or reaching across a countertop. Functional rotation builds a stronger waist than repetitive spinal flexion alone.
How to Do It
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Hold a light dumbbell or clasp your hands together.
- Start near one hip.
- Rotate diagonally upward across your body.
- Return slowly.
- Perform 10 to 12 repetitions per side.
Sit-to-Stand with Overhead Reach
One of the fastest ways to tighten the waist involves strengthening the muscles that burn the most energy. This exercise recruits the glutes, quadriceps, shoulders, and core while encouraging your abdominal muscles to stabilize your spine throughout the movement. I often recommend reaching fully overhead because it improves posture while increasing core engagement. Clients frequently report feeling stronger during everyday activities after adding this exercise to their routine. Better posture creates the appearance of a trimmer waist almost immediately.
How to Do It
- Sit near the front of a sturdy chair.
- Stand while reaching both arms overhead.
- Tighten your core.
- Lower your arms.
- Sit back down slowly.
- Perform 12 to 15 repetitions.
Lateral Step with Reach
Side-to-side movement strengthens muscles that often receive very little attention during traditional workouts. Lateral stepping activates the hips and glutes while the overhead reach forces the core to stabilize continuously. I include this exercise because it improves balance, coordination, and mobility while gently raising the heart rate. Clients often notice they move more confidently throughout the day after practicing this pattern consistently. Every step strengthens the muscles that help support a firmer midsection.
How to Do It
- Stand with your feet together.
- Step to one side.
- Reach both arms overhead.
- Return to center.
- Alternate directions.
- Continue for 45 seconds.
Father Fights School’s Silence on Biological Males in Daughter’s Bathroom Facilities
In a case that has sparked attention across North Carolina, a father from the state has taken legal action against his children’s school district. He claims the officials have been unresponsive to concerns about whether biological males are permitted to share restrooms with his fourth-grade daughter.
Brandon Matthews, the father in question, has two children attending Mount Pleasant schools. His daughter is enrolled in fourth grade at Mount Pleasant Elementary School, while his son is gearing up for his senior year at Mount Pleasant High School. In May, Matthews approached the principals at both institutions with a straightforward request: to be informed if any students of the opposite biological sex were allowed to use the same bathrooms or locker rooms as his children.
Importantly, Matthews’s request did not involve an identification of any specific student, as clarified by the details of his federal lawsuit.
According to his attorney, the father remains in the dark, still waiting for answers from the school district.
The federal lawsuit, filed against Cabarrus County Schools, demands transparency regarding the policies and practices related to the access of sex-separated restrooms and locker rooms at the two involved North Carolina schools.
“Brandon Matthews does not currently know whether a male is using his fourth grade daughter’s bathroom,” Nicholas Barry, senior counsel at America First Legal Foundation, told News Media.
“And does he have a constitutional right to know that? We say ‘yes,'” Barry said. “Without that information, he’s just in the dark and… He really can’t make any good decisions without that information.”
Matthews’ concerns over the district’s bathroom practices predate the lawsuit.
At a May 11 school board meeting, Matthews appeared with his daughter and urged officials to keep boys and girls in separate bathrooms.
“Nobody’s targeting a child,” Matthews told the board. “All we’re asking is that the bathrooms are accessible to each gender. If they want that, then create a new bathroom.”
Matthews then turned to his daughter and asked her to address the board.
“I’m personally a girl and I wouldn’t want a boy following me in the girls’ bathroom,” she said. “It’s inappropriate.”
Matthews also used heated language during his remarks. He repeatedly warned officials that he could “get aggressive” and, while discussing protecting his daughter, said, “Anytime somebody touches this little girl, I’m gonna hang them from my garage.”
Less than three weeks later, Matthews put his concerns in writing.
He asked his daughter’s principal to notify him “in the event that any biological male is permitted to use the female restroom facilities” she uses. He made a similar request concerning his son’s facilities.

Both principals responded June 8, according to court filings.
The elementary school principal said that “[b]ecause matters involving individual students are confidential,” the school “cannot confirm, disclose, or provide advance notice regarding the status, identity, or accommodations of any particular student.”
The principal told Matthews that if he or his daughter became aware of a specific situation affecting her experience, they could contact the school to discuss his concerns. The high school principal sent a nearly identical response, according to the filing.
Barry argues that didn’t answer Matthews’ question.
“The explanation is fairly straightforward. They don’t want to answer him,” Barry told News Media. “Well, nobody asked for individual student information, so that’s a non-answer,” he added.

Matthews filed suit in the Middle District of North Carolina against the Cabarrus County Board of Education, Superintendent Dr. John Kopicki and the principals of his children’s schools. America First Legal Foundation and co-counsel Philip Thomas are representing him.
On Friday, Matthews also sought a preliminary injunction asking the court to require the district to disclose its policies governing sex-separated bathrooms and locker rooms and whether members of the opposite sex are permitted to access, or have accessed, facilities used by his children.
Matthews, a practicing Christian, says in his sworn declaration that his religious beliefs include that sex is immutable and that his children should not be expected to undress or use restrooms in the presence of members of the opposite sex.
The lawsuit does not allege that Matthews knows a biological male has used his daughter’s bathroom. His attorneys argue that he cannot determine whether it has happened or is permitted to happen.
Matthews said in a sworn declaration that he has been unable to locate a written, publicly available policy explaining when students at either of his children’s schools may be expected to share restrooms or changing facilities with members of the opposite sex.

At an April 13 school board meeting, School Board attorney William Isenhour said “the district addresses the [bathroom and locker room] situation at each school on a case-by-case basis with the goal of addressing concerns of all students and their families,” according to court filings.
News Media sent Cabarrus County Schools detailed questions about the allegations, the district’s bathroom policies, whether parents receive advance notice and its response to the lawsuit.
Matthews says he ultimately seeks advance notice and a meaningful opportunity to opt his children out before they are expected or required to use intimate facilities in the presence of a member of the opposite sex. His preliminary-injunction motion asks the court, while the case proceeds, to require the district to disclose its policies and whether opposite-sex individuals are permitted to access, or have accessed, facilities used by his children.
It also seeks notice when a member of the opposite sex “has been authorized to enter, or is expected to enter” a facility used by their child.
Barry told News Media that a victory could have implications beyond Cabarrus County.
“Yes, I think if we continue to push Mahmood forward, and we start getting wins on it, schools around the country are going to have to start disclosing to parents what their policies are and providing parents the opportunity to opt out,” Barry said.

“I do think as Mahmoud percolates out and as cases like this get decided, it’s going to require that school districts provide notice and an opportunity to opt out to parents on this specific issue.”
That is Barry’s interpretation of what a victory could require. The court has not yet ruled on Matthews’ claims.
Matthews’ attorneys rely heavily on the Supreme Court’s decision in Mahmoud v. Taylor, which involved parents seeking notice and an opportunity to opt their children out of certain LGBT classroom instruction on religious grounds.
AFL argues that if parents are entitled to notice in that context, the same principle should apply to children sharing bathrooms, locker rooms or changing facilities with members of the opposite sex.
Matthews alleges the district violated his rights under the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment and the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
The case is America First Legal’s second lawsuit against Cabarrus County Schools over sex-separated facilities.
Its first lawsuit alleges female students at Cox Mill High School were required to share girls’ restrooms, locker rooms and changing spaces with a biological male.
Those allegations are separate from Matthews’ case and do not establish that a biological male has used the restroom at his daughter’s elementary school.
Barry drew the same distinction in his interview with News Media.
“The first lawsuit we filed, there are allegations that a male is using our three client females’ restroom and locker rooms and changing spaces,” Barry said. “Which is different than what we’re doing here. Here, it’s a straightforward attack on Cabarrus County Schools policy to get information about it and to know whether it’s impacting our clients’ daughter and son at school right now.”
Matthews’ attorneys also stressed in their preliminary-injunction motion that he is seeking information and notice, not an order barring another student from a particular facility.
“Plaintiff seeks only notice and information—he does not seek to prevent any student from using any facility,” they wrote.
Cabarrus County Schools did not immediately respond to News Media’s request for comment.

The New York City congresswoman noted that she had a scheduled interview Sunday on ABC News’ “This Week” and planned on taking hormonal shots in its waiting room before going on air to discuss politics.
“I want you all to see that. And because women can do anything, and I think it’s badass that I’m going to be giving myself shots in the green room [as I] get my glam on,” she said.
Egg-harvesting allows women to have some of their unfertilized eggs taken from their ovaries when younger and then store them at subzero temperatures till they are ready to have them implanted either in themselves or a surrogate.
The process increases their chances of a successful pregnancy later in life, as women’s egg quality often declines rapidly in their mid-30s.
To freeze their eggs, women have to go through about two weeks of hormone treatment before undergoing the procedure to harvest their eggs.
“This is just not something that men deal with,” AOC said.
“Men run for office, or frankly, they interview for jobs, and people don’t think in the back of their mind, ‘Okay, this guy is running for office. How old is he? Oh, well, is he going to want to start a family,’ ” she said.
AOC has been engaged to Riley Roberts, who has worked in marketing and web development, since 2022.
“I got sworn into the House of Representatives when I was 29 years old,” she reflected. “There’s this flip side where you have to then grow up in the public eye in a time that most people usually get to grow more privately.”

Iran’s Demands Halt Strait of Hormuz Reopening: Critical Talks Loom
On Saturday, Iran announced a set of preconditions for reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz, demanding compensation for wartime damages. This move adds complexity to any potential negotiation to unlock the waterway crucial to the global economy.
Since late February, Iran has effectively blockaded the strait in response to attacks by the United States and Israel. Tehran now seeks to impose tolls for ships passing through and has resorted to attacking vessels that attempt to bypass its designated routes.
Repeated assaults within the strait, once freely navigable before hostilities erupted, ultimately caused the breakdown of an April ceasefire. Mediators have been urging both parties to revert to the terms established in a June memorandum to restore peace.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi highlighted that talks with Oman on the strait’s transit and management are nearing completion. However, he emphasized that reopening Hormuz hinges on additional conditions and redress for breaches of the June accord.
On Saturday, Security Chief Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr outlined a series of demands for reopening the strait, which include ceasing “war and aggression against Iran and its allies in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iraq.”
He also demanded the lifting of a parallel US naval blockade of Iran, the end of sanctions, the release of frozen assets and compensation for wartime damage, according to remarks reported by Tasnim news agency.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, meanwhile, said Hormuz’s reopening had “nothing to do with the negotiations between Iran and Oman”, adding that the “enemy is forced to accept Iran’s conditions for the opening of the strait”.
Repeated attacks
The comments came as transit through Hormuz has dropped significantly, with Iran targeting ships it accuses of skirting its preferred route through Iranian waters.
The United Arab Emirates’ foreign ministry on Saturday condemned what it called a “hostile Iranian attack that targeted a tanker belonging to ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) with a missile while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz, without causing casualties”.
Later on Saturday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said a ship was hit by a projectile off Oman in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire that was extinguished but no casualties. It was unclear whether they were referring to the same ship.
On Friday, ADNOC had put out a statement saying that since the start of the war, 15 of its vessels had been attacked in Hormuz, “including three vessels this week alone”.
Oman’s foreign ministry on Saturday condemned “repeated attacks on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz”, without naming Iran.
It also said that “ongoing negotiations regarding navigation arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz are proceeding in a positive and constructive atmosphere”, and urged against any actions that might jeopardise the progress.
The previous Iran-US deal — meant to serve as a jumping-off point for negotiations on a permanent settlement — had said Iran and Oman would hash out future arrangements for the strait in discussion with other Gulf countries and “in line with the applicable international law”.
International law generally forbids tolling in such waterways.
Security agreement
Türkiye’s foreign minister said Saturday he expected Egypt to join a joint defence agreement between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan designed to stabilize the region, calling the country a “natural partner on all issues”.
“I believe that at the next stage Egypt will also be among us in the alliance. We already act toward one another as if we were alliance members,” Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in an interview.
A drone struck US assets at an Egyptian port on the Mediterranean last month, marking the first drone attack on Egyptian territory since the outbreak of the Iran war.
Fidan said the agreement does not target a specific country.
“There is no common threat that we have put in writing,” he said, according to the news agency.

Costco Employee Arrested in Fatal Motorcycle Collision
An unsettling incident has emerged from Issaquah, Washington, involving a Costco worker accused of causing a fatal crash. The employee reportedly confessed to law enforcement that his intention was merely to “scare” a fellow coworker after spotting him embracing a woman he fancied.
Twenty-two-year-old Tyler Sorensen is at the center of allegations that he pursued 20-year-old coworker Jonathan Langdon out of their workplace. The confrontation unfolded on July 31 after Sorensen observed Langdon share a hug with another colleague, Samantha Peterson.
Surveillance cameras documented the disturbing chase as Sorensen’s gray vehicle closely followed Langdon’s motorbike. Disturbingly, the footage shows Sorensen allegedly accelerating and then colliding with Langdon.
The impact hurled Langdon into a street sign, resulting in his immediate death, while his motorcycle continued its unintended journey onward.
Court documents obtained by KOMO News reveal that Sorensen allegedly fled the scene immediately, pausing only once to ensure his car had no damages before heading home.
He was stopped by a Washington State Patrol Trooper and given a speeding ticket, the officer unaware of the fatal collision that had unfolded a few miles back, according to documents.
Roughly an hour after the incident, King County prosecutors claim Sorensen returned to the crash scene only after his father brought him back.
The alleged suspect admitted to police that he intentionally struck the motorcycle, saying his ‘blood was boiling’ after he saw the victim embrace Peterson.

‘It was stupid but I… meant to do it,’ he said, according to prosecutors. He then said he didn’t mean to strike the victim, he just wanted to ‘spook him.’
Sorensen claimed that Peterson was his ex-girlfriend, which Peterson has denied.
Peterson told police the two were not romantically involved and that she had repeatedly told Sorensen he was ‘crossing boundaries’ as a friend.
The 22-year-old allegedly sent a chilling text message to friends shortly after the collision, saying, “I f****d up bad.’
Court documents described how the motorcyclist’s body was mangled after he was catapulted into the street sign, the New York Post reported.
‘Langdon’s body is seen violently impacting the metal signpost, causing his body to wrap around the post and recoil backwards, landing face down,’ per court records.
Prosecutors said Langdon was found face down and wearing a black helmet when first responders arrived at the scene.
The impact of the crash was so severe that it caused Langdon’s visor to separate from his helmet.
‘Langdon’s shirt was pulled up from his waist and there appeared to be an impact mark on his lower back.

‘The impact mark appeared to match the metal sign post next to Langdon in width and the circular holes, which left visible matching marks on his skin,’ documents stated.
Sorensen was charged with second-degree murder and thrown behind bars in King County Jail.
He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on Thursday, and following the hearing, his bail was set at $2 million.
The Costco worker was ordered to remain in custody, and is scheduled to return to court on August 27 for a routine pre-trial conference.
