In a shocking case from Florida, a man stands accused of murdering his mother just after she relocated to the state in a bid to help him with mental health issues. The tragic incident unfolded shortly after she posted bail for him.

At the center of this heartbreaking scenario is 21-year-old Gibson Nash. Authorities have charged him with first-degree murder following a bewildering chain of events that culminated in the discovery of his mother’s lifeless, bloodied body.

The grim discovery was made by deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, who found 56-year-old nurse Margaret Chu Dufour sprawled on the floor of her Polk County residence. This wasn’t the first time officers had visited the home.

Just a month earlier, deputies had been called to the address to handle a “disturbance” related to her moving company, marking the beginning of a series of unsettling events.

The “movers tried to upcharge her and charge her more money,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a news conference on Aug. 5.

After movers left, his deputies helped her finish moving items into her new home “without fanfare,” Judd said.

“That’s the kind of customer service our deputies do.”

So deputies with the same department were horrified to find her dead on the floor a month later. It was the culmination of a series of puzzling events on the morning of July 21, Judd said.

Just before 7 a.m., her son was involved in multiple traffic crashes while driving her vehicle, a blue BMW SUV, Judd said.

After fleeing the first crash, Nash allegedly hit a slew of other vehicles with the SUV, Judd said. The rampage caused more property damage, additional crashes between other vehicles, and ultimately, injuries to three people, who were treated at a hospital.

Deputies then found Nash unconscious behind the wheel of the SUV covered in blood. That confused deputies, Judd said.

“It was a significant crash, but it was like, ‘Why is he unconscious?’” Judd said.

Deputies tried to sort it out at the scene.

“He’s got blood on his hands, and the paramedic thinks this is not a bloody kind of crash. Where did the blood come from?”

Nash was taken to a local hospital with an unknown identity. He was sedated and intubated.

Meanwhile, deputies went to Dufour’s house because it was shown on the vehicle’s registration. She didn’t answer their knock at the door.

They learned that she wasn’t supposed to be at work that day. They saw a broken glass plate near her patio door and a shovel near the side of the house.

Because of the “suspicious circumstances,” they entered the house with a key they found on the front porch, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies then found Dufour “stomped into a bloody puddle in the middle of the floor,” Judd said.

The medical examiner said she died from “blunt force injury from a beating, and from being strangled to death,” Judd said.

“It’s one of the most, personally, violent murders we’ve seen in a very long time,” said the sheriff, who’s been in law enforcement 54 years.

In April, Nash had been arrested twice for allegedly threatening to kill his mother. They both lived in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the time. The first time, Dufour had called 911 after locking the door behind her after entering a smoke shop, leaving him in her vehicle just outside.

She told the 911 operator that her son had “attacked” her the night before and “assaulted” her that morning, Judd said. The only way she could get him to calm down was agreeing to take him to the smoke shop, she said on the call.

Shortly after, Nash was arrested for allegedly threatening to kill her with a knife. Later that month, Nash pulled a knife and threatened to kill her again, this time “over not being able to play on the Xbox,” Judd said.

Soon after, Dufour moved to Florida. But she returned to Tennessee to bond her son out of jail, Judd said.

Her move south was an attempt to get Nash more mental health treatment, Judd said. Family members told investigators that he’s “bipolar, schizophrenic and maybe autistic.”

While in the hospital after the July traffic crashes in Florida, blood on his clothing was tested and found to be his mother’s, Judd said.

Investigators found “remarkable” bruising on his knuckles and feet “from where he kicked and kicked and stomped and beat his mother,” Judd said.

Nash also was in liver failure from overdosing on Tylenol, Judd said.

Dufour had recently started work as a nurse on the surgery floor at Bartow Regional Medical Center.

Nash’s lawyer, hired by his father, wouldn’t let law enforcement interview him.

“Fortunately for us, he made some omissions without being interviewed,” Judd said.

It was not immediately clear who Nash’s attorney is.

Nash also has been charged with two third-degree felonies for “leaving the scene of a crash involving injury.”

“Gibson Nash needs to remain locked away from the public forever,” Judd said.

He is currently held without bond in a Polk County jail.

“The way he murdered his mother was a mix of pure rage and extreme violence. After killing her, he caused two vehicle crashes on a busy road. He has no respect for others and is a clear threat to society.”

What started as a night out in Sydney’s eastern suburbs dramatically turned when a man ended up in a hospital, with blood staining the ground while onlookers urgently called for an ambulance, after a suspected assault was recorded on CCTV.

Authorities received an emergency call around 11 p.m. on Saturday, responding to reports of a physical altercation on Coogee Bay Road in Coogee.

Security cameras captured the tense moments leading up to the escalation that descended into violence.

The footage shows a small group, featuring a younger man dressed in a white shirt and the supposed victim, engaging in conversation and embracing on the street.

Subsequently, the video reveals the young man slapping the 41-year-old, then moving aggressively towards him.

The older man backs away with his hands raised, appearing to try to stop the blows, before he is seen on the ground as others rush in to help.

A woman can be heard yelling for someone to call an ambulance while bystanders roll the injured man onto his side.

The footage then appears to show the group trying to walk back towards the fallen man before the woman pushes one away.

“Look what you’ve done to him,” she yelled.

Paramedics treated the 41-year-old man at the scene before taking him to the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Police from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command began investigating, arresting a 26-year-old man at the scene before taking him to Maroubra Police Station.

He was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and refused bail to appear before court on Sunday.

In a firm statement on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that his administration has rejected a peace proposal put forward by President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, signaling a significant diplomatic standoff.

Netanyahu addressed his Cabinet with unmistakable clarity, saying, “I want to clarify this: Israel rejects the 15-point document. I have heard people saying, ‘You didn’t say that.’ So here I am saying it again.’

He reiterated that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will not execute any withdrawal from Gaza until Hamas has fully disarmed, underscoring a non-negotiable condition for the peace process.

This development comes on the heels of last month’s touting by President Trump of his peace initiative’s progress, which he believed was a critical breakthrough. However, that optimism now faces a significant setback as Netanyahu opposes a central component of the plan, which conditions Israeli withdrawal on the complete disarmament of Hamas.

The Board of Peace’s roadmap initially suggested a phased Israeli pullback from Gaza in response to Hamas laying down its weapons – a concept initially celebrated by Trump but now unequivocally rejected by Netanyahu, who maintains a staunch stance against this proposed timeline.

‘When I say Hamas must be disarmed, I mean heavy weapons, lighter weapons, all weapons. We are talking about genuine disarmament, not a fictitious one,’ Netanyahu declared Sunday, insisting Israeli troops will remain in Gaza until the terror group is completely stripped of its arsenal.

Hamas has taken the opposite position. The group said last month it would only disarm after Israel fully withdraws from Gaza and ends military operations, adding that surrendering its heavy weapons would come later and only if a Palestinian state is established.

Netanyahu also doubled down on his long-standing opposition to Palestinian statehood, declaring: ‘As long as I am Prime Minister, there will be no Palestinian State.’ His comments come as he faces a fierce political fight ahead of October elections, with the wars in Gaza and Iran expected to dominate the campaign.

Senior Hamas official Basim Naeem blasted Netanyahu’s remarks, urging US officials and international mediators to ‘exert pressure’ on the Israeli leader to follow the agreed roadmap and ‘prevent him from obstructing the process for domestic political and electoral considerations.’

Naeem said Hamas remained committed to the Board of Peace’s proposal, describing it as an act of ‘national responsibility’ that serves the ‘interests of the Palestinian people.’

Netanyahu acknowledged negotiations with Washington remain ongoing despite the impasse.

‘We are currently discussing this issue with the Americans,’ he said. ‘They have ideas; some of them are acceptable to us and some are not, and we know how to stand firm on these matters.’ 

Netanyahu visited Washington, DC last month for the funeral of former South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who was one of Israel’s most vocal allies in the US Senate.

During the trip, the Israeli leader also met with Trump at the White House, and rubbed shoulders with other top cabinet officials.

At the Washington National Cathedral, Netanyahu crossed paths with Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and was also seen speaking closely with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and his wife.

He was also spotted among senior Trump aides and administration heavyweights including Stephen Miller, Steve Witkoff, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, HHS Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, and Homeland Security chief Markwayne Mullin.

Trump’s meeting with Netanyahu last month was the eighth face-to-face engagement  since the Commander in Chief returned to the White House, and their first in-person encounter since a secretive, behind-closed-doors session on February 11.

Organizers of the Miss North Carolina USA pageant have clarified that the decision to strip the recent winner of her crown was due to her history of objectionable speech, rather than her conservative political views or Christian beliefs.

According to a statement from A Blaize Productions, the group responsible for maintaining the North Carolina state license for the Miss USA pageant, the action taken against Brittany Boltinhouse was not influenced by her personal views, political affiliations, or religious stance.

“Our organization is proud to encompass a diverse range of backgrounds, political ideologies, and belief systems. We value and celebrate this diversity,” the statement emphasized.

The 27-year-old Boltinhouse captured the Miss North Carolina USA title in June. However, her reign was short-lived as controversial remarks from her past surfaced, leading to her recent dethronement. Boltinhouse argued that her political opinions and previous public statements were the true reasons behind the decision.

“I believe and think I was stripped from my title because of my political stance and my belief system as a conservative Christian woman,” Boltinhouse, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, told the Carolina Journal in an interview Friday.

“I am proud of my faith. I am proud of my standards. I am a proud conservative woman, but a Christian woman. I’m a God-fearing woman.”

“I will never let my guard down for my faith, and also I love this country.”

The organization that stripped her of her spokeswoman victory says it was due to her online speech, after old social media posts resurfaced of her repeated use of the N-word.

“The decision followed a careful review of the totality of information that came to our attention, including previously undisclosed conduct and public content spanning multiple years that was inconsistent with the standards and responsibilities expected of a Miss North Carolina USA titleholder under the agreements governing the position,” the organizers’ statement concluded.

Miss USA President and CEO Thom Brodeur, who lists “he/him” pronouns on his Instagram, had said in a statement earlier this week that the pageant “does not tolerate racism, homophobia, transphobia nor language that strips any person of their dignity,” according to Fox Carolina, saying the objectionable statements “reflected conduct over an extended period of time.”

“A title here isn’t a trinket,” he told ABC News. “It is a position of trust, extended by an organization and accepted by a woman who agrees to carry a standard in public,” he added. “When that standard is broken, the title cannot continue as though nothing happened.”

The Miss North Carolina USA title has since passed to first runner-up Myla Hadley, who is set to represent the state at the Miss USA pageant beginning Aug. 24 in Miami.

“I think and believe that my title was ripped from me because of my beliefs,” Boltinhouse told the Carolina Journal, adding “every teenager has made a mistake” when talking about the posts from 2017-2019 where the alleged objectionable statements were made online.

Boltinhouse pointed to her winning the crown based in part on being named Miss Congeniality “because of my character and who I am.”

“I won’t be judged for my past,” she said, taking this setback as a “blessing in disguise” for her, adding she is “glad it happened to me and not some other young lady that, you know, probably just wouldn’t make it through what I am going through right now.”

“You have a right to be a conservative in this country, a constitutional right,” she added in that interview. “Everyone has a right to say what they want to say and feel what they want to feel.”

It’s almost unbelievable in hindsight, but Matthew Schaefer wasn’t the top contender for the Calder Trophy on the opening night of last season. Surprising as it may seem now, Schaefer didn’t even rank as the second choice.

Ivan Demidov, who eventually finished a distant runner-up in the race to No. 48, was the clear preseason favorite, with odds set at +185 on Opening Night. Following closely were Zeev Buium, Michael Misa, and Jimmy Snuggerud, each with odds ranging between +800 and 12/1. Schaefer was listed at 13/1. It seems almost absurd now, but it highlights just how unpredictable this market can be.

A similar scenario unfolded in the 2024-25 season. Anticipation was high for that rookie class, headlined by the likes of Matvei Michkov and Macklin Celebrini. Yet, it was Lane Hutson, another talented debutante, who stole the spotlight and clinched the coveted award.

This year’s NHL rookie lineup might not boast the historical prestige of its predecessors, but it still features standout prospects: Gavin McKenna and Porter Martone lead the charge.

Selected first overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs, McKenna is expected to secure a prominent spot on the roster straight out of training camp, likely assuming a top-six role. Meanwhile, Martone has already earned a devoted following in Philadelphia after an impressive playoff run, where he notched five points over the course of 10 games last spring.

The two are co-favorites to win the 2026-27 Calder Trophy at +300, just ahead of Sharks’ rookie winger Ivar Stenberg (+600), 2025 No. 3 overall pick Anton Frondell (+900), and Cole Hutson (+900) of the Capitals.

All five figure to be handed big roles this season, which is a critical part of handicapping this market, but there are a lot of other players who tick that box, too. And their prices are a lot more appealing:

2026-27 Calder Trophy picks

Konsta Helenius, Buffalo Sabres (18/1, bet365)

It flew under the radar because so much was going right for the Sabres last year, but Konsta Helenius was the goods in his brief spin with the big club.

He tallied four points in nine games during the regular season, and then added a pair of goals in four playoff contests. The former No. 14 overall pick passed the eye test, too, as he was a ball of energy in Buffalo’s middle six.

Helenius was also a beast in the AHL, registering 63 points in 63 games, and was one of the best players for Finland at the World Championships, scoring the golden goal and notching six points.

Helenius is almost certain to get a prime role with the Sabres next season, and he’s already proven he can compete at the varsity level.

Viggo Björck, Winnipeg Jets (40/1, bet365)

By all accounts, the Jets are going to give Viggo Björck every opportunity to break camp as their No. 2 center.

Winnipeg needs a shot in the arm, and fair or not, Björck is going to be the one asked to provide it.

Björck, who was picked No. 8 overall at the 2026 NHL Draft, was tabbed as an NHL-ready prospect, and the Jets are in a position to let the Swede learn on the fly. He fills a need for them down the middle, and the franchise desperately wants to give its small-but-rabid fanbase a reason to be excited.

If the Jets do let Björck roll out of the gates, he’ll be in a plum position to put up big numbers.

An American transgender asylum seeker has returned to the U.S. after a challenging stint in a perilous Islamic refugee center in the Netherlands. However, her feelings about her home country remain less than positive.

Jane-Michelle Arc, 48, fled to Ter Apel, the largest refugee camp in the Netherlands, following Donald Trump’s re-election in 2024. Concerned for her safety as a transgender woman in the U.S., Arc sought refuge in Europe.

Through her time in the overcrowded and often violent camp—known for frequent stabbings and attacks—Arc realized a desire to return to her roots in California, despite the harsh environment she experienced.

Now back on American soil, Arc’s dissatisfaction with her homeland has resurfaced.

“The situation I have in the U.S. as a trans person is not good, right? But here, I will be hurt or killed,” Arc shared with local news outlet Pow News.

‘It is too dangerous to walk to the grocery store because of the people that live in the camp, and I’m one of them, I live here. You see these guys in yellow vests, they actually wear them because there are so many stabbings.’ 

Ter Apel has been deemed dangerous by the Red Cross, who said aid volunteers feel ‘unsafe’ at the site, adding that violence ‘cannot be controlled.’ 

Last month, Arc returned to the US, but the software engineer’s transition back to the States hasn’t been the easiest. 

From the healthcare system to the expensive grocery prices, she’s finding life difficult along the Pacific Coast after a year away. 

‘First time shopping in the US, and In-N-Out too. America is really, really loud and overwhelming. And everything is so expensive,’ she wrote on Threads shortly after returning.

‘The Dutch complain about groceries being expensive, but good grief, San Francisco is a whole different experience.’ 

On Wednesday, she wrote: ‘I have my gripes with the Dutch healthcare system. And I know what I like about the American healthcare system. The ways in which the US system are bad are very, very bad. The ways in which the Dutch system are bad are “bad,” but not the way the US is. 

‘I feel like healthcare is something humanity decided to just make worse on purpose because it seems like we know what we want and need from healthcare as a species.’  

A few weeks ago, she celebrated being back in the US for a week by acknowledging how much more ‘comfortable’ the States are. 

Despite the ease of living more safely, she complained that the ‘transphobia is quite overt.’ 

‘Which is the way it was before I left,’ she wrote. ‘America isn’t supposed to be like this. I wish society gave a s**t.’ 

She also complained about the ongoing debate about transgender athletes in sports, as she is a triathlon athlete herself who has written about competing and winning women’s events. 

‘I’m a trans athlete and I don’t give a s**t who I compete against, I’m there to win,’ she wrote. ‘If that’s men, fine. Women, fine.’  

During Arc’s early days at Ter Apel in April 2025, she candidly wrote on Substack about missing California, saying: ‘I feel California in my bones. So deeply.

‘I need California in a way I struggle to describe because it is so deep and elemental and romantic and passionate and good and true it just stops meaning anything because it means everything. And I left, man, I left California.’ 

She wrote about not having toiletries inside the asylum center and wearing filthy clothing. 

From her bedside on her first night, she wrote about not being afraid in the center. 

‘I am not afraid someone is going to threaten to kill me while screaming slurs at me outside this door. I am not afraid I will be arrested and killed in a men’s jail for peeing in a public restroom. I am not afraid that one group of people is using me as a pawn in a greater ideological war against another group of people,’ she wrote. 

‘I can’t describe the feeling of that stuff not being on my shoulders. It’s been there now for a long time.’ 

In a later post, Arc, who also posts online under the name Max Toegang, wrote: ‘This place is f**king dire, and it has problems. But hate and aggression aren’t the problems.’ 

She also detailed how the center told her to ‘be careful who I hang out with and where I go’ after she got ‘sideways looks from Muslims.’ 

It is unclear when Arc started to feel physically unsafe at the center.  

For years, it has sheltered people fleeing war and persecution, including Eritreans, Somalis and Syrians, who say it remains too dangerous to return home despite the fall of Bashar al-Assad.

Now, a new wave has begun arriving: transgender Americans who say they fled the US fearing for their safety after Donald Trump returned to the White House.

Since May 20, the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) has limited access, allowing only vulnerable asylum seekers, such as women and children, inside.

Others must wait outside until space opens up, and the Red Cross reported the violence in front is due to a ‘small group of men who are generally not among the people seeking assistance.’

The area will become a safety-risk zone, allowing authorities to conduct preventive searches, Dutch Asylum and Migration Minister Van den Brink announced per NL Times.

‘It’s scary, it’s legitimately scary, I decided that my mental health is degrading so substantially being here, that I just need to get out,’ Arc said at the time. 

Arc transitioned from male to female in 2012, and changed the gender on her ID in 2013.

But after Trump’s re-election, she feared losing protections in jobs, housing and healthcare. When her passport renewal threatened to erase her legal identity, she chose to leave the US.

She previously told The Guardian that fleeing the country is ‘the dumbest thing’ she has ever done.

‘I did it because I was afraid for my life. I didn’t do this in secret. I talked to everybody I knew. I said: “I am planning to do this wildly stupid thing.”

‘Everybody said: “I don’t love this for you, but there is no other option,”‘ she said.
