New ransom notes released in Nancy Guthrie disappearance

In a dramatic twist to the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has unveiled ransom notes reportedly sent to Savannah Guthrie after her mother’s mysterious disappearance. Alongside these notes, newly uncovered surveillance footage reveals a masked figure lurking near the Arizona home of the Guthrie family, intensifying the public intrigue.

The release of these ransom notes has sparked a surge in public assistance, with authorities observing a noticeable increase in tips regarding Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts.

While the authenticity of the ransom notes remains unverified, their publication has resulted in a “slight” rise in the number of tips from the public, according to a spokeswoman from the Pima County Sheriff’s Office. The complete contents of these purported ransom notes were made public on July 31.

“Following the release of the two ransom notes last week, investigators from the Nancy Guthrie Task Force have observed a mild increase in the flow of tips,” stated Angelica Carrillo, Public Information Officer for the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, in a statement to News Media. “Each tip is being meticulously investigated.”

The alleged ransom notes were sent on Feb. 2 and Feb. 6.

“Hello Savannah,” one of the notes read. “We have your mother Nancy. She is safe but scared. She will be held for ransom and once payment is received she will be released unharmed.”

“She had a white smart watch on the floor of the foot of her bed and the white flood light in backyard was destroyed,” it continued.

In a follow-up message sent to the Guthrie family, the alleged ransom notes states that Nancy Guthrie has passed away.

“We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. We never intended to hurt her, that was not our intention. She perished shortly after she was taken. We believe it was heart related,” the purported ransom note states.

As previously noted, News Media has not independently verified the authenticity of the notes or their contents.

Alleged ransom note

The first purported Nancy Guthrie ransom demand was sent on Feb. 2, a day after her suspected abduction in Tucson, according to authorities.

Second alleged ransom note

The second message was sent on Feb. 6, and authorities say it shares the same “unique linguistic style” as the original ransom demand.

News Media learned of the watch on the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 3, a day after the note was sent, according to authorities. That timeline suggests the sender knew about the watch before the detail became public.

Jason Pack, a retired FBI negotiator, said the watch detail demonstrates familiarity with the house but not necessarily knowledge unique to Guthrie or proof that she was alive.

“He knew about the watch on the floor — almost nobody did,” Pack said. “In my view, two things the language does support: He writes like a native English speaker. The idiom and the small connecting words are all in the right places, and at this length that is hard to fake.”

Father of Teen Suspect Arrested by DeLand Police in Connection to Double Homicide Case

EUSTIS, Fla. – Authorities in DeLand have detained a second individual tied to a chilling double murder case that shocked the downtown area last month, where two men were fatally shot.

Early Friday morning, police apprehended Daytron W. Etkins, 41, at his home on Bates Avenue in Eustis. He faces charges of felony accessory after the fact in the ongoing inquiry into the killings. During the arrest, investigators also carried out a comprehensive search of the premises.

Authorities revealed that Etkins is the father of Keyan Rundell, the 17-year-old already in custody, facing two charges of second-degree murder related to the deaths of victims Dustin Rose and Samson Campbell.

The police allege that Etkins played a crucial role in aiding his son post-homicide, actively attempting to hinder law enforcement from apprehending him. The arrest was a collaborative effort between DeLand police and Lake County law enforcement agencies.

Rundell’s capture occurred on Wednesday, when detectives from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office found him staying at a Super 8 Motel in Ellenton. The arrest was executed smoothly at 8:30 a.m. under the authority of an outstanding warrant from another county.

U.S. Marshals announced the arrest, and DeLand Police Chief Jason Umberger confirmed it at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Influencer Cooper Noriega’s Tragic Overdose Linked to a ‘Drug Delivery’ Network

A notorious drug dealer known for running a sinister “DoorDash for Drugs” service that claimed the life of TikTok sensation Cooper Noriega has been sentenced to 27 years behind bars. The harsh judgment was delivered on Thursday.

U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald presided over the case, delivering the decisive sentence to 37-year-old Erick Oved Estrada, also known by aliases such as “Franco Sanchez” and “Eric Freddy Hook.”

Estrada had been under federal detention since November 2023, following allegations of orchestrating a drug trafficking ring notorious for its same-day delivery of cocaine and fentanyl-tainted oxycodone, a lethal mix responsible for at least two deaths.

He was also linked to selling deadly pills to co-defendant and fellow drug dealer, Arian Alani, aged 37. Alani distributed the fatal fentanyl-laced pills to Noriega on June 9, 2022. In a text two days later, Alani informed Estrada, “my boy just died yesterday,” and criticized selling substances mixed with fentanyl.

Alani admitted guilt in September 2025 to one charge of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. His sentencing is slated for December.

Noreiga had nearly 2 million TikTok followers at the time of his death at 19. He had uploaded an eerie TikTok video about dying “young af ”hours before his death.

The tragic news broke after a samaritan called emergency services after finding the influencer unconscious in the parking lot of a mall near Los Angeles. Despite arriving on the scene shortly thereafter, paramedics were unable to resuscitate Noriega.

Months after Noriega’s death, a victim identified as “S.M.” bought two Xanax pills and two oxycodone pills for $80 from a driver acting on behalf of Estrada. The victim then returned home, ingested the pills, and died of a drug overdose.

Estrada previously pleaded guilty in October 2025 to one count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances resulting in death and one count of distribution of fentanyl resulting in death.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and IRS Criminal Investigation agencies led the case.

Estrada has also been ordered to pay $43,145 in restitution for his crimes.

CBS Evening News, often struggling with ratings, saw its anchor Tony Dokoupil surpassed by none other than his own temporary replacement, according to the latest Nielsen figures.

In an intriguing twist, the show achieved its best viewership since March, led by former ABC personality Matt Gutman.

This surprising development was initially highlighted by Status, with The Daily Mail later confirming these findings using Nielsen ratings data from the week of July 27.

Currently enjoying a two-week break, the 45-year-old Dokoupil experienced his lowest-rated month since he took on the role in January.

Meanwhile, Gutman, at 48, drew in an impressive 4.1 million viewers, outperforming Dokoupil’s July average by 300,000 viewers.

The development puts pressure on Dokoupil, who has not passed the 4 million marker since March.

A veteran executive from a different network told the Daily Mail they found it strange Dokoupil would leave his post for so long. The summer is typically when struggling shows try to pick up ground, they said.

‘Everyone is entitled to a vacation, but when you are trying to build an audience and fighting to right a failing ship, taking a two-weeker is a headscratcher.

‘Never seen this before,’ another executive who spoke to Status said, branding the move as ‘another dagger in Tony’s neck’ and ‘baffling.’

They also flagged it a ‘missed opportunity’ for the anchor to have gained ground on an also-vacationing David Muir, who anchors ABC’s first-place World News Tonight.

‘And his substitute outclassed him in the ratings,’ the executive added.

The once-esteemed broadcast is in the midst of a massive overhaul while being masterminded by Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss.

Weiss, 42, brought on Dokoupil from CBS Mornings, following a disastrous dual-anchor experiment by her predecessors last year that sent more than 1.2 million viewers astray.

At the time, the show was still averaging 4 million viewers comfortably. Sources told Status the number has long been viewed within CBS News as the minimum amount acceptable. Under Dokoupil, it has turned into an achievement. 

Weiss was hired to be CBS News’s editor-in-chief in October, at the behest of then-new Paramount CEO David Ellison. Ellison, at the time, articulated a vision of CBS News reaching more people across the country and moving into the digital age.

Sources told Status last month that they believed Weiss’s moves since taking the reins have irrevocably damaged the CBS brand.

One CBS News staffer told the publication: ‘The problem is clearly Bari. We are all trying to clean this up, but we need Ellison’s help.’

In a distressing episode in Oregon, a young girl anticipated a simple ride from her boyfriend but ended up taking a harrowing trip to the hospital after he shot her. The girl’s urgent text messages to her mother were pivotal pieces of evidence during the trial.

Sky Alexander Korbut, now 20 years old, faces almost six years imprisonment as declared by the Oregon Department of Corrections. The Beaverton Police Department reported that a jury found him guilty of second-degree assault along with illegal firearm possession in April.

This troubling event took place in Beaverton’s Southwest Prairie Terrace area, just outside Portland, early on the morning of November 21, 2024, around 4:50 a.m. Korbut and his 16-year-old girlfriend were in his apartment at that time.

According to court records reviewed by Portland’s NBC partner KGW, the girl had come over asking for a lift home. Korbut, who was tidying his room, placed a gun atop a dog kennel before showing it to her. She reacted by telling him to “get it out of her face” and pushed it away.

Korbut shot the girl seconds later, according to prosecutors.

After she was shot, the girl texted her mother in a panic.

“I got shot,” read one text, followed by “Mama” and “Plz” and “Help me,” a screenshot shared with regional Fox affiliate KPTV shows. Her mom had been asking for her location and had just texted her, “I thought u coming home.”

Korbut called 911 and told dispatchers that “he had accidentally shot” his girlfriend, the Beaverton Police Department recounted. Officers showed up at the home and found the girl “suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries.”

A GoFundMe set up for the girl said she “was shot in her stomach” and it affected “many organs and parts in her body.” Court documents said the bullet hit her intestines, gallbladder, liver, and pancreas, and she “needed 20 liters of blood.”

Though doctors apparently told her family “there was a chance she might not make it,” the girl survived.

The suspect-turned-felon was initially arrested and charged with third-degree assault. However, as the investigation progressed, that charge was upgraded after “detectives uncovered additional evidence, including statements provided by the victim that contradicted Korbut’s account of the shooting.”

Korbut told authorities that he had bought the Smith & Wesson handgun illegally from someone “on the street” after failing background checks, according to court records. He seemed perplexed that the gun fired, saying he was “waving” the gun while moving it when “somehow, the gun went off.”

Psychologist Claims Flawed Plea Deal Boosts Kohberger’s Appeal

The forensic psychologist who famously cautioned last year about Bryan Kohberger’s plea deal being a strategic part of a “long game” now suggests that prosecutors missed a pivotal chance. By not compelling Kohberger to fully disclose the Idaho student murders in his plea, they allowed him potential flexibility to reshape his narrative, even as he waived his right to appeal the sentence.

“It was a gross miscalculation by the district attorney’s office to proceed with this deal. We’re left seeing the victims enduring the ordeal once more, without any real resolution,” expressed Dr. Kris Mohandie, a police and forensic psychologist with expertise in violent behavior.

Having brokered a deal to avoid the death penalty, Kohberger now faces four consecutive life terms without parole, along with an additional decade in prison.

Despite the serious sentencing, Kohberger recently sought post-conviction relief, citing ineffective legal representation and claims of misleading counsel, all the while maintaining his innocence regarding the murders.

Law enforcement discovered his DNA on a knife sheath at the crime scene, in a bed with two of the University of Idaho students he confessed to killing during a change of plea hearing in July 2025.

Mohandie said prosecutors should have required Kohberger to provide a full account of the killings before accepting the plea, even if, as Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson said after sentencing, they believed he would lie.

“Well, that’s a lame excuse, in my opinion, because at least you’ve got him admitting something,” Mohandie said. “This way, he can pull back and say, ‘I didn’t admit to doing anything…I said nothing. There are no stories or statements related to me. And I was coerced into this. I had terrible counsel.’ It enables him to have a complete playing field for him to dance around. With now an infinite array of lies. So pin him to a story is part of why you do this.”

Mohandie said the absence of any detailed confession now gives Kohberger room to challenge the case while forcing victims’ families to relive the proceedings.

“It was ill-conceived, it was poorly designed, and at the end of the day, you know the victims are being re-traumatized by all of this,” he said.

The psychologist also argued that Kohberger’s handwritten post-conviction petition and attempts to regain the spotlight for himself are consistent with the personality traits he has long associated with the convicted killer.

“First and foremost is his desire to get away with things and to outsmart the system, and I do believe that notoriety and fueling his notoriety, continuing to fuel that, is the secondary gain as well,” Mohandie said.

Illustrating that was Kohberger’s decision to call a reporter from prison before filing the petition, he said.

“He is a common archetype, if you will,” Mohandie said. “He’s not special, but he believes he’s special, which is the commonality among these people — the belief that you’re special when you’re not; the belief that you’re smarter than other people and can outwit them.”

Mohandie said that’s why he believes the public should resist looking at killers as fascinating figures.

“They are terrible people and monsters,” he said.
