Washington Wildfire Arson Suspect Linked to Previous First-Degree Murder Charge

Court documents reveal that the man suspected of igniting the largest wildfire that has ravaged hundreds of structures and displaced thousands in eastern Washington previously faced a first-degree murder charge. He later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter.

Aaron F. Farinacci, age 37, was taken into custody on Monday. He is accused of first-degree arson related to the Old Trails Fire, a major blaze engulfing the region around Spokane, Washington’s second-largest city.

These wildfires have resulted in the destruction of at least 700 buildings, forcing around 67,000 residents to flee. Investigators have not linked Farinacci to the other two ongoing fires, which are still under investigation.

Farinacci’s arrest coincided with statements from Washington Governor Jay Inslee, a Democrat, who underscored the role of climate change as firefighters contended with the region’s devastating fires.

“Climate change isn’t some existential global thing,” Inslee said Monday. “It’s our neighbors. It’s our friends.”

Court records reviewed by News Media show Farinacci was initially charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault in a 2010 Arizona homicide before pleading guilty in 2012 to reduced charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault.

The Associated Press reported that Farinacci, then 21, fatally shot his father during an argument over washing dishes in Mesa, Arizona, in 2010. Farinacci also shot himself but survived.

A Maricopa County judge sentenced Farinacci to 12 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault. Arizona Department of Corrections records show he was released on Dec. 23, 2020.

Less than six years after his release from prison, Farinacci again found himself accused of a major crime.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said Major Crimes detectives and Washington State Department of Natural Resources fire investigators identified Farinacci as the suspect after developing probable cause during the investigation.

Detectives obtained arrest and search warrants before taking Farinacci into custody without incident at his Spokane residence, where he was booked into the Spokane County Jail on suspicion of first-degree arson.

Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels said witnesses reported seeing a man – later identified as Farinacci – acting suspiciously near where the fire started. After returning home and noticing smoke rising from the same area, they flagged down an Airway Heights police officer and provided investigators with a physical description of the man and the clothing he was wearing.

Deputies initially detained and questioned Farinacci before releasing him as first responders focused on evacuating residents threatened by the rapidly growing fire, Nowels said.

As detectives reviewed witness statements, body camera footage and evidence gathered with fire investigators, they developed probable cause to arrest Farinacci.

When deputies first contacted Farinacci, he was carrying waterproof matches and a butane lighter, investigators said. Fire investigators later determined the blaze was consistent with dry grass being ignited by a match or lighter.

Nowels said the first-degree arson charge reflected the evidence investigators currently have but cautioned that additional charges could be considered as the investigation continues and authorities assess the full scope of the fire’s destruction.

The sheriff credited observant residents with helping investigators quickly identify the suspect.

“As it happens in so many critical cases, it was citizens who were paying attention to their surroundings, being aware and willing to step up and say something that led to the relatively quick apprehension of Mr. Farinacci,” Nowels said.

LOS ANGELES — A report released Tuesday confirmed that the devastating 2025 Eaton Fire, which resulted in numerous fatalities and widespread destruction, was ignited by Southern California Edison equipment.

The blaze tragically took the lives of 19 individuals and caused extensive damage to over 9,000 locations, both residential and commercial. Los Angeles County Fire officials pinpointed the origin to an inactive tower.

“After conducting an 18-month comprehensive investigation, which involved the expertise of electrical and metallurgical specialists, we determined that electrical arcing events at the non-operational Southern California Edison (SCE) tower triggered the wildfire,” the agency detailed in their statement.

The relentless fire took firefighters almost a month to fully contain, leaving a charred landscape of 22 square miles in its wake.

Kathleen Dunleavy, a representative for Southern California Edison, acknowledged the receipt of the report and stated that the company is currently analyzing its contents.

“We have taken our potential role in the start of this fire seriously from the very beginning,” Dunleavy said. She said SCE previously acknowledged “it was likely our equipment was associated with the ignition of the Eaton Fire.”

She said the utility continues to support the community as it recovers.

With four decades of experience in the fitness realm and as a co-founder of TRAINFITNESS, the UK’s leader in personal training education, I’ve witnessed firsthand how posture in adults over the age of 50 isn’t simply a matter of trying harder to sit upright. It boils down to the muscles utilized over the years. By consistently practicing five specific bodyweight exercises, one can reverse the effects of a hunched posture more reliably than endless chiropractic sessions could.

What’s Really Causing Your Slump

By the time most people hit 50, their posture often tells a familiar story. The head juts forward beyond the shoulders, the upper back takes on a rounded shape, and the shoulders curl inwards. Meanwhile, the pelvis tends to tip forward, causing an outward belly and a hollowed lower back. Such is the cumulative effect of spending decades in a seated position.

The primary culprit is the sedentary lifestyle, often characterized by long hours of sitting — usually six to eight hours daily, five days a week, for over thirty years. This lifestyle causes the hip flexors to shorten, as they rarely extend fully. Likewise, the chest muscles become compacted since the arms remain forward, while the muscles between the shoulder blades weaken and stretch due to inactivity. Meanwhile, the neck shifts forward to better view screens, further amplifying posture issues.

Add in the phone and the tablet, which drag the head down and forward for the hours we’re not sitting at desks, and you have a body that’s spent a lot of years being asked to hold one bad shape. Muscles adapt to what they do most. They shorten in the direction of habit and lengthen where they’re not needed.

The other cause is muscle loss. After 50, the deep postural muscles that hold the body upright have been slipping without training. Without them, the body sags into whatever shape gravity pulls it into, and that shape is a slump.

Why Muscle Work Beats Adjustments

Chiropractic adjustments move joints. They don’t build the muscles that hold the joints in place. A good adjustment can give someone a temporary sense of relief and improved position, but within a day or two, the muscles pull the joints back to where they were, because those muscles are what dictate posture, not the bones.

Bodyweight moves work on the muscles directly. They build strength in the muscles that pull the body upright and length in the muscles that pull it into a slump. Over weeks, this changes the resting posture without needing anyone to keep manipulating your spine. The body ends up holding itself in the better position.

There’s also the daily habit angle. Ten minutes of bodyweight work at home, four or five times a week, adds up to a serious dose of postural retraining across a month. A chiropractic visit is once a fortnight or once a month. The maths on which one shifts posture faster isn’t close.

None of this is a criticism of chiropractors themselves. Many are excellent at what they do, and there are cases where a specific adjustment is exactly what someone needs. But for the everyday postural slump most over 50s carry around, the fix is muscle work, not manipulation.

Wall Angels

This opens the chest, mobilizes the upper back, and fires up the muscles between the shoulder blades that hold the shoulders back where they belong. It’s the single most useful move for reversing the forward-shoulder slump most over 50s develop.

How to Do It:

  • Stand with your back, bottom and head against a wall, feet a foot or so out from the wall
  • Press the lower back gently towards the wall to flatten the curve
  • Raise your arms to shoulder height, elbows bent to 90 degrees, palms facing forwards
  • Slowly slide the arms up the wall, keeping backs of hands, elbows and wrists in contact if you can
  • Slide back down

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t let your lower back arch off the wall to force the arms further. If your shoulders don’t have the range yet, keep the lower back pinned and only slide the arms as far as they’ll go with that spine position. Range comes with weeks.

Sets and Reps: 8 to 10 slow reps.

5 Chair Exercises That Restore Leg Muscle Faster Than Squats After 60

Doorway Chest Opener

This stretches the front of the chest, which has been shortened by years of sitting and screen work. Loose chest muscles let the shoulders sit back rather than being pulled forward, which changes the whole line of the upper body.

How to Do It:

  • Stand in a doorway with forearms on the frame, elbows at shoulder height
  • Step one foot through the doorway
  • Let your chest move forward until you feel a stretch across the front of the chest
  • Hold for 30 seconds, breathing slowly
  • Step back and repeat once more

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t push too hard into the doorway or arch your lower back to fake more stretch. The pull should be at the front of the chest, not in the shoulder joint or low back. If it’s not there, ease off.

Sets and Reps: Hold 30 seconds, repeat once

Bird Dog

This trains the deep postural muscles that hold the spine steady while the limbs move. It’s the pattern the body uses when walking, reaching or carrying, and it’s the muscle group that’s been most switched off by years of sitting.

How to Do It:

  • Come onto all fours, hands under shoulders, knees under hips
  • Keep the spine long, not sagging and not arched
  • Slowly extend the right arm forwards and the left leg backwards, until both are level with the trunk
  • Hold for 3 seconds without letting the trunk twist
  • Return to the start position under control
  • Repeat on the opposite side

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t lift the arm and leg so high that they arch your lower back. The trunk should stay perfectly level, as if a glass of water were balanced on the small of the back. Height doesn’t matter. Trunk control does.

Sets and Reps: 8 reps per side, 3-second hold.

The 8-Minute Bed Routine That Flattens Belly Bulge Faster Than Ab Workouts After 50

Glute Bridge

This wakes up the glutes and strengthens the muscles that pull the pelvis into a neutral position. Weak glutes are one of the biggest causes of the forward-tipped pelvis and pushed-out belly most over 50s carry, and this move fixes both at once.

How to Do It:

  • Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart
  • Squeeze the bottom muscles and lift the hips towards the ceiling until your body forms a straight line from knees to shoulders
  • Hold for 3 seconds at the top
  • Lower under control

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t push through your lower back instead of your glutes; that loads the back and does nothing for the bottom. If you feel it in the lower back rather than the glutes, tuck the pelvis under a little at the top and squeeze harder.

Sets and Reps: 12 to 15 reps.

“Klay Thompson, never a MVP candidate in nothing, 22ppg,” Durant wrote, making a stark comparison between Thompson’s achievements and the accolades of Embiid, Brown, and Maxey.

Thompson, known for his usually easygoing demeanor, was not pleased to find himself caught in the crossfire. The ex-Warriors guard responded by posting Durant’s remarks on his Instagram Story, directly addressing Durant in the process.

“Aye man u good?” Thompson wrote. “What u using my full government for??”

Draymond Green then entered the exchange with a shot referencing Durant’s history of using anonymous social-media accounts.

“Slim thought he was on his burner?” Green wrote on Threads.

The jab recalled Durant’s infamous 2017 mistake, when he defended himself in the third person from his verified account after apparently forgetting to switch profiles. It also carried added bite because of Green and Durant’s turbulent history, including their heated 2018 argument that contributed to tension during Durant’s final Warriors season.

Durant’s broader comparison is not entirely without merit. Philadelphia can field four players capable of producing at an All-Star level, including an MVP center and one of basketball’s greatest players.

The Warriors, however, had already won a championship and recorded 73 regular-season victories before Durant arrived. That group paired established chemistry with Stephen Curry’s shooting, Thompson’s two-way play and Green’s versatility before adding another MVP.

The new 76ers may possess comparable individual credentials on paper, but they have yet to play a game together. Durant’s argument will ultimately be decided on the court.

For now, it has only succeeded in uniting Thompson and Green against their former teammate.

In a relentless sequence of air raids, Israeli military jets targeted the Gaza Strip for the second consecutive day on Monday, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 18 Palestinians, confirmed medical sources. This escalation comes on the heels of US President Donald Trump’s announcement heralding progress towards implementing a peace agreement established last year.

Beginning at daybreak, Israeli aircraft targeted key locations, including Gaza City in the north, the central area of Deir al-Balah, and Khan Younis in the south. The strikes wrought the highest single-day death toll seen in recent weeks, according to local health officials in Palestine.

President Trump’s declaration last Friday conveyed optimism when he asserted that Hamas and other Palestinian factions had consented to lay down their arms. Many saw this promise as a potential game-changer in the long-standing conflict.

Despite these diplomatic developments, skepticism lingers. On Sunday, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen, a participant in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet, expressed doubts regarding Hamas’ commitment to disarmament. He cautiously stated that while the Israeli government remains open to giving Hamas a chance to disarm, confidence in them following through is limited.

Speaking with Israel’s Army Radio, Cohen emphasized that no formal accord had been reached to cease fire on Gaza. He further argued that should Hamas fail to lay down arms, Israel might need to assume complete control over the Gaza enclave, which it already partially occupies, to ensure security and stability.

“In the deal we signed with the United States, our stance is that Hamas must be dismantled. This is the first thing that must happen,” he added.

Later on Sunday, a spokesperson for Netanyahu’s office told Reuters news agency that Israel expressed concerns to the US on the disarmament plan.

“The most important concern for Israel is that nothing can happen before Hamas completely and truly disarms …,” Doron Spielman, a spokesperson for the Israeli prime minister’s office, said.

Attacks hit Gaza tents, apartment and house, medics say

Strikes on Deir al-Balah killed at least four people, Palestinian health officials said, and a separate attack wounded five people and set some tents ablaze in Mawasi, near Khan Younis, according to the civil emergency service.

A couple and their nine-year-old son were killed in a strike on a house in Mawasi, Palestinian officials said.

Another couple was killed with their child in a strike on an apartment in Gaza City, where two more people died in a strike on a tent near the office of the Egyptian representative mission, medics said. Later on Sunday, another two people were killed in the city’s eastern Zeitoun neighbourhood, they added.

One person was killed near Jabalia in northern Gaza, Palestinian officials said.

In a subsequent attack on Gaza City, medics said an Israeli airstrike on a car killed at least three Palestinians near Saraya Square.

Trump’s Board of Peace, the US-led body overseeing the ceasefire, published on Friday a 15-point roadmap setting out the final steps for implementing the agreement.

Nickolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace’s lead envoy for Gaza, said the strikes across Gaza came despite efforts by the board and mediators to bring Palestinian factions to agree on the roadmap for the implementation of Trump’s plan.

He said in a post on X that he was working with parties, mediators and regional partners to “de-escalate and create the space for the full implementation of the President’s plan”.

“Achieving a lasting peace is hard but achievable if everyone makes their best efforts,” Mladenov said.

At least 1,230 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since a ceasefire was reached in October, according to health authorities.

Four Israeli soldiers were killed over the same period, according to Israeli tallies.

Hamas says it has shown flexibility

Hamas has said Israel must stop its attacks in Gaza and pull its troops back, in accordance with other key terms of the ceasefire deal, before it will agree to hand over weapons to a new Palestinian body named to run Gaza.

A senior Hamas official said on Sunday the group had demonstrated “considerable flexibility”, but accused Israel of wanting to impose a de facto situation on the ground by intensifying its strikes.

“This escalation, coinciding with progress on the political track, clearly demonstrates that the occupation government is seeking to undermine efforts aimed at ending the war and to impose facts on the ground by force,” Basem Naim said in a statement.

Former senior Fatah official Mohammed Dahlan, who is based in the United Arab Emirates, said in a Facebook post that Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and a senior adviser involved in the US initiative, had told him he was working with the Israeli side to stop attacks on Gaza.

Dahlan said contacts with the US were continuing to ensure the agreement was fully implemented, adding that its success now depended on Israel fully ending its daily attacks on Gaza.

Taking to Instagram, the niece of King Charles expressed her excitement, stating, “Jack and I are thrilled to introduce Baby Girl Brooksbank!! We are head over heels in love with our little one.”

Accompanying the heartwarming announcement was a photograph of the baby peacefully lying on a bed, sparking an outpouring of congratulatory messages from followers.

The couple splits their time between a charming villa in Portugal and a cozy cottage at Kensington Palace.

While their daughter does not hold an HRH title, her birth positions her 15th in the line of succession, nudging her great-uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh, down to 16th place.

The daughter of disgraced Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson has yet to reveal the newborn’s name.

The Royal Family’s official Instagram account warmly received the news in a heartfelt message posted just moments after the birth was announced. 

A statement read: ‘Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, born on Monday, 3rd August 2026, at 6.20pm, at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal.

Buckingham Palace officials previously revealed the couple’s sons August, five, and Ernest, two, were ‘very excited’ to welcome a new member of the family.

She will also be the 15th great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and the third to be born since her death in 2022.

The new arrival will be the fifth grandchild of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, following the birth of Princess Beatrice’s daughter Athena Mapelli Mozzi in January last year.

The baby’s grandfather Andrew – the King’s brother – was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office in February amid the scandal surrounding his friendship with the late paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein. 

Eugenie and Jack married at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle in October 2018, and welcomed their first child, August, on February 9, 2021.

His younger brother Ernest was born on May 30, 2023.

Beatrice, 37, and Eugenie, 36, arrived separately at the venue in Kemble, Gloucestershire, and were dropped off at a house next to the All Saints Church, out of sight of the waiting press.

They then teamed up for a coordinated public entrance together, flanked by their respective husbands, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and Jack Brooksbank, in full view of the cameras.

The move meant that the pair were far more visible as they were photographed during a long walk up from their drop-off spot instead of being deposited – like all the other royal guests – directly outside the church gate.

In a significant development, ICE has detained Giovana Mercedes Moreno Ochompy, a former high school teacher from Illinois and undocumented immigrant, due to her alleged involvement in a triple homicide linked to the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang. Notably, Chicago law enforcement initially released Moreno Ochompy under the city’s sanctuary policies, failing to notify ICE about her release. Tom Homan, the former temporary head of ICE, sharply criticized these sanctuary policies, asserting that they obstruct federal agencies and jeopardize community safety.

In Connecticut, a woman facing charges related to a fatal drunk driving incident, which claimed the lives of an off-duty police officer and his girlfriend, has been identified as an undocumented immigrant. Federal authorities disclosed on Monday that ICE has called on state officials to prevent her release from custody, should that scenario arise.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed to News Media that ICE issued a detainer for 27-year-old Melissa Esperanza Ramirez-Romero, who was arrested following a tragic head-on collision on July 13. The crash resulted in the deaths of 38-year-old Bridgeport Police Officer Cooper Whiteside and his 34-year-old partner, Brittany Islami.

“Melissa Esperanza Ramirez-Romero, a criminal illegal alien, is facing charges for Vehicular Manslaughter and DUI,” a DHS representative reported to News Media. “On July 26, 2026, a detainer was filed against her by ICE.”

The Department escalated its warnings through a post on platform X, highlighting that “an illegal alien KILLED A COP in Danbury, Connecticut.” The agency urged Connecticut’s policymakers to work alongside ICE, stressing the importance of not allowing Ramirez to be released back into the public sphere due to sanctuary city policies.

Ramirez-Romero is charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, operating under the influence, traveling unreasonably fast and failure to drive in the proper lane.

Danbury police said the crash happened around 2:45 a.m. July 13 on Sugar Hollow Road, where a Jeep Compass collided head-on with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Officers found Whiteside of Danbury and his passenger, Islami of New Milford, dead at the scene. Ramirez-Romero was taken to Danbury Hospital with serious injuries.

Whiteside, a Danbury native who dreamed of becoming a police officer since childhood, graduated third in his police academy class and served with the Bridgeport Police Department for two years before he was killed.

The department mourned Whiteside’s death the day after the crash, saying he “served with selfless dedication” while extending its condolences to his family and loved ones.

“Rest easy, brother,” the department wrote. “We’ll take it from here.”

The DHS announcement came as Connecticut officials worked to correct false claims that Ramirez-Romero had been registered to vote.

Connecticut Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas said in a video that Ramirez-Romero has never been registered to vote in Connecticut and that an innocent U.S. citizen with the same name was mistakenly identified online, leading to death threats against the unrelated woman.

“The defendant charged in connection with the July 13 crash that killed an off-duty Bridgeport police officer is not and has never been registered to vote in Connecticut,” Thomas said. “The voter registration record circulating online belongs to a different person entirely. Another Melissa Ramirez, a United States citizen who lives in New Britain, is legally registered to vote in Connecticut.”

Danbury police also warned that multiple people with similar names had been mistakenly identified online and urged the public to verify information before sharing it.

Ramirez-Romero remained held on a $500,000 bond pending her next court appearance.
