CAIRO – In a dramatic overnight incident, a cargo ship experienced a jarring assault, reportedly being struck by a projectile while navigating the waters off Oman, near the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz. This revelation comes as the seas of diplomacy appear equally turbulent, with the US and Iran presenting conflicting narratives about any ongoing dialogue.

Amidst this maritime upheaval, US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that discussions were reigniting between the two nations in an effort to potentially ease tensions. Contradicting this claim, however, Iran firmly stated that their discourse was exclusive to Oman, focusing solely on matters concerning the Strait of Hormuz.

The Middle East is buzzing with developments, as Tuesday brings critical updates to the forefront of international attention.

Incident in the Strait of Hormuz: Cargo Ship Under Attack

The ship faced its ordeal at precisely 2 a.m. local time, according to reports from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center. Located approximately 37 kilometers (23 miles) northeast of Al Khasab in Oman, the vessel’s operators reported it being “struck by an unknown projectile,” adding another layer of mystery to this maritime security dilemma.

The UKMTO did not provide further information on the ship, including what flag the vessel was sailing under or whether it was carrying cargo.

The town of Al Khasab sits on the tip of the Arabian peninsula that juts into the Strait of Hormuz, the crucial waterway at the mouth of the Persian Gulf through which a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas passed before the war.

The strait has been effectively shut by Iran’s attacks on shipping since the start of the war in February, while the U.S. also has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports in the waterway.

US and Iran offer conflicting claims about talks

Trump said Monday that talks with Iran had resumed, a day after saying he called of massive strikes he had threatened to unleash on the country. Trump said he pulled back at the urging of Gulf allies Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Whether “Iran wants to admit it or not, we are, in fact, talking,” Trump maintained.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Monday that no negotiations were being held with the U.S., adding that Tehran’s talks were only with Oman and focused on establishing a route for safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump voiced frustration with Iran, suggesting Tehran had asked for the talks, which are critical to ending the monthslong conflict and reviving stalled cargo traffic through the strait.

“Iranian Leadership is unbelievably duplicitous!” the U.S. president vented on Truth Social, his social media platform.

“They ask for a meeting, some would say ‘beg,’ talks begin, with more scheduled in the immediate future, and they say, openly and proudly, that they’re not having any discussions, that nothing is being talked about, and they’re only dealing with ‘Oman’,” he wrote.

In a distressing incident in Florida, a mother reportedly neglected her children to the point that they assumed she had passed away. Around 1 a.m., her 6-year-old son, diagnosed with autism, sought help from a neighbor, bringing along his younger sibling to alert them of the situation.

According to an arrest report accessed by Law&Crime, the autistic child was expressing through song that his mother was deceased, referring to the events surrounding Shalesia Cave’s oldest child.

The woman in question, 25-year-old Shalesia Cave from Gainesville, faced arrest in the early hours of Saturday. She faces three charges of child neglect not resulting in severe physical harm after authorities reportedly discovered her unconscious in a bathtub.

The unsettling details were documented in the arrest report by a Gainesville Police Department officer, who provided a vivid account of the scenario, noting:

After I shook and spoke loudly to [Cave], she gradually came to her senses but was still incredibly unaware of her surroundings or her physical state. [Cave] then started crying, slurring her words, and not being able to form understandable sentences.

Police were called to Cave’s apartment around 1 a.m. on Saturday after the neighbor reported speaking with Cave’s children, who had knocked on her door.

“The witness advised that she saw on her Ring camera [Cave’s children] were visibly distraught, knocking on her door stating that their mother was dead,” the arrest report states.

The neighbor says she placed Cave’s children inside her residence and then “rushed” to get another sibling, who was 10-months-old, out of Cave’s home. She called 911 while doing this.

“The witness advised that there was no one else in [Cave’s] residence,” the arrest report states. “[Cave] was the only person that was with her kids.”

Police say the children were “clearly distraught” while speaking with officers. Cave was found “breathing but unresponsive” and naked in her bathtub. It’s unclear what caused her to allegedly pass out.

While speaking to police, Cave “spontaneously uttered that she ignored her kids” earlier in the evening “so that they would go back to sleep,” per the arrest report.

Cave was released on her own recognizance over the weekend after being booked in the Alachua County Jail. She has been ordered to stay away from her children; it’s unclear whose care the kids are under.

Despite Bayern falling to PSG in the last four, Kane scored in both legs of the semi-final, as he had also done against Real Madrid in the previous round. 

Kane was equally brilliant for England in the World Cup, having been instrumental as Thomas Tuchel’s side progressed to the semi-finals. 

The England captain scored six goals, including two braces, but his lack of involvement in their semi-final loss to Argentina could count against him.

Historically just two domestic trophies would not be enough to win the Ballon d’Or but Kane’s mind-boggling output over the past year means he remains the bookies’ favourite to win the prestigious prize.

Kane will have his work cut out for him though, as the second on the list of favourites for this year’s award is Lamine Yamal. 

The Barcelona and Spain star is seen as having a strong chance to become the first teenager to win the Ballon d’Or.

Since the start of last season, Yamal has been simply unstoppable. The Spaniard enjoyed a stellar season for both club and country, winning La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup and of course the World Cup.

Yamal racked up an impressive 16 goals and 12 assists in 28 La Liga games, while he also netted six times and assisted four goals in the Champions League.

His contribution would have likely been even higher had Yamal not seen the end of his season blighted by injury. He made a speedy recovery in time for the World Cup and while he may have not been at his blistering best, the winger played a vital role.

The 19-year-old, who started all but one game, was crucial to Spain’s success, despite only scoring one goal.

The threat he posed forced teams to double up on him, providing open space for teammates. Yamal was also expert in drawing free kicks and penalties through his trickery. Even with a low output his effect was still felt.

To many captaining your side to a World Cup with eight flawless performances should immediately make you a top candidate for the honour, but Rodri’s year has been disrupted by several injuries, preventing him from playing half of the Premier League season.

When on the pitch Rodri has been outstanding and he was deservedly named as the  World Cup’s Player of The Tournament after orchestrating sublime victories over France and Argentina in the semi-final and final respectively. 

Victory for Rodri would indicate that performances in the biggest games are key, rather than consistency over the course of 12 months.

While French superstar Mbappe went another season without a trophy, his individual performances and numbers have been typically magnificent over the past nine months.

With Real Madrid, Mbappe netted an impressive 42 goals in 44 games, including 15 in 11 Champions League outings to end as the top scorer in the competition.

Mbappe was undoubtedly one of the leading figures at the World Cup, scoring ten goals to win the golden boot, finishing clear of his nearest challenger Lionel Messi.

The haul also saw Mbappe become the outright leading goalscorer in World Cup history.

Despite Mbappe reiterating his individual brilliance once again, a lack of silverware may hold him back from winning his first Ballon d’Or.

Messi silenced doubters from the first match, in which he scored a hat-trick against Algeria. He would go on to contribute goals and assists in all but one of Argentina’s World Cup matches, racking up eight and four respectively.

After years of ridicule and derision in the early 2020s, Dembele has been transformed from an underachieving talent to the world’s best under Luis Enrique at PSG.

For the second year running, Dembele won the Champions League with the French side. The forward held his nerve to score their all-important equaliser from the penalty spot in the final against Arsenal – his 20th goal of the season.

Dembele also enjoyed a prolific World Cup with the Frenchman scoring six goals, including an excellent hat-trick against Norway. But his lack of influence in helping Les Bleus past Spain in their semi-final may count against him.

Bellingham’s reputation was already stellar before this year, but he became England’s Birmingham Baggio as he attempted to drive the Three Lions to the World Cup final, akin to how the ponytailed star had done for Italy in the 1994 tournament.

Similarly to his Madrid teammate Kylian Mbappe, Bellingham failed to pick up any silverware and will be massively held back by that in the voting. However, it would be ignorant to not at least consider Bellingham for the prize.

The midfielder certainly possesses the talent to deserve the prestigious award. However, the award rarely goes to the most gifted footballer at the time, but rather the most successful in that year’s campaign.

So unfortunately for Bellingham, despite his heroic England performances and unquestionable quality, a season in which you win no silverware and register 13 goals and assists in 40 games is unlikely to cut it.

With “Spider-Man: No Way Home” previously making waves with a $260 million debut in December 2021, “Brand New Day” has indeed surpassed all expectations.

Despite a smaller number of theaters, the intense buzz these films generated brought significant crowds to the select venues. Until 2026, the only wide-release movie reaching an opening weekend per theater average above $60,000 was “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.

While “The Lion King” from 1994 holds the record with a staggering $793,376 per theater during its limited debut—a milestone unlikely ever to be surpassed—the record for the highest per theater average for a wide release now belongs to “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” With a per theater average of $80,252, it left “Endgame’s” $76,601 in the shadows. Astonishingly, “Brand New Day” also outperformed significant limited releases like “Black Swan” ($80,211), “Up in the Air” ($78,763), and “Boyhood” ($77,523), all the more impressive given its release across 4,487 venues.

All these numbers simply indicate that “Brand New Day” was packing individual theaters at a staggering rate for a wide release opener.

From the start, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” was a box office behemoth destined to destroy records like The Hulk obliterates concrete walls. Its domestic opening day was $169.3 million, a noticeable increase over the previous record holder, “Avengers: Endgame” and its $157.46 million debut. It left all prior Spider-Man adventures in the dust, with a 39% increase from the $121.96 million opening day of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” That $169.3 million opening day was also already bigger than the three-day domestic launches of “Spider-Man 3” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

Interestingly, “Brand New Day” still holds onto this record even considering it grossed $72 million of that opening day sum from Thursday showings that began at noon. Removing that figure from the equation and “Brand New Day” still grossed $97.3 million on its opening day. That just narrowly edged out the $96.7 million opening day sum of “Avengers: Endgame” when subtracting its $60 million worth of Thursday night showings. Any way you slice it, “Brand New Day” is the new champion of domestic opening days.

This doesn’t just amplify how hilarious it is that Sony bought Spider-Man’s film rights for $7 million. It also further changed the box office game, redefining the ceiling for how much money movies could amass in North America on their opening days.

Let’s make like Peter Parker in “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and travel overseas for a moment. The record-shattering “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” box office didn’t just stay in North America. Key international territories also flocked to this movie. That included moviegoers in India, who showed up to the tune of $35.4 million. That gives “Brand New Day” the biggest Hollywood opening weekend ever in India by a major margin and the country’s sixth biggest opening weekend ever for any film. To boot, within its first four days of release, it became the third biggest Hollywood title ever in India. 

Given that a trio of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies featuring Spider-Man were already among the top five biggest Hollywood movies ever in India before “Brand New Day” premiered, this new adventure anchored by Tom Holland’s web-slinger resonating in the country shouldn’t be a surprise. Even with that track record, the massive numbers for “Brand New Day” in India is tremendous. After all, it’s often a crapshoot whether or not splashy American blockbusters can make a dent in this country given the competition from local tentpoles like “Kalki 2898 AD,” “Pushpa 2: The Rule,” or “RRR,” among many others.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” though, was so bog that its record-shattering went global, and it had no issues making history in this territory.

Brazil is a country rich with amazing cinema with practically flawless gems like “Central Station,” “The Given Word,” and “Bacurau.” Brazilian audiences also often show up in great numbers for major American titles, so it wasn’t surprising that “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” made a pretty centavo in this territory, especially after “Spider-Man: No Way Home” made a fortune in this country. However, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” annihilated all pre-release box office expectations by scoring the biggest opening weekend ever in Brazil for any movie, locally or internationally produced.

“Brand New Day” opened to $23.8 million in Brazil, reaffirming Spider-Man’s enduring appeal in this country. Back in 2002, Brazil contributed a mighty $17.53 million to the worldwide gross of “Spider-Man,” above its grosses in other key territories like South Korea and Australia. Nearly 25 years later, this web-crawler has only grown more beloved in Brazil. Out of all “Brand New Day” opening weekends for individual international territories, Brazil provided the sixth biggest debut, outpacing Germany, Australia, and Italy.

Only time will tell if “Brand New Day” can dethrone “Inside Out 2” to become the biggest movie ever in Brazil, though the odds sure do look good. Now if only some of Brazil’s homegrown masterpieces could secure “Brand New Day-“sized box office success in North America.

Among the biggest opening weekend record holders of all time, there’s a common theme between their releases. Before “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” every single movie that opened to $220+ million domestically opened either in December or the final weekend of April. Prior to July 2026, only two July releases (2019’s “The Lion King” and “Deadpool and Wolverine”) had debuted to $190+ million. Once upon a time, July routinely housed record shattering domestic opening weekends thanks to titles like “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” and “The Dark Knight.”

However, starting in the mid-2010s, the biggest movies were launched either at the start of the summer or just before the various December holidays in North America. July has still produced modern financial juggernauts, like the box office behemoth “Barbie.” However, the biggest $220+ million North American opening weekends seemed the exclusive domain of two months. “Brand New Day,” meanwhile, kicked off its theatrical run in the penultimate month of the summer, leaving those December and April tentpoles behind.

Like “It” scoring a $123 million bow in the “dead zone” of September, “Brand New Day” was a vibrant reminder that record obliterating box office hits can launch anywhere. “The Dark Knight” and “Dead Man’s Chest” would be proud seeing July produce such box office numbers again.

Nauru Reclaims Identity as Naoero, Leading Global Wave of Cultural Resurgence

In a bold cultural initiative, the Pacific nation of Nauru has reinstated its historical name, the Republic of Naoero, in a bid to empower its national identity and enrich its cultural heritage.

This significant change follows the May approval of a constitutional amendment by Nauru’s parliament. Initially, the government intended to seek public endorsement through a national referendum, but President David Adeang recently announced via social media that the referendum would no longer proceed.

“After careful consideration, we decided against a referendum. Naoero is not a novel name needing validation from the populace,” Adeang clarified in his announcement.

He emphasized that the name Naoero already resonates within the community, is prominently displayed on the national coat of arms, and is constitutionally recognized, thus solidifying its rightful status.

Going forward, the nation will use the shortened name “Naoero,” and its citizens will be known as “dei-Naoero.”

European colonisers changed the country’s name to Nauru after finding it difficult to pronounce the island’s native name Naoero.

The nation is the world’s third-smallest after Vatican City and Monaco, with a population of about 12,000.

Adeang said the decision was not about politics but about identity, heritage, and “preserving the legacy of our ancestors and strengthening the future of our children”.

The government has formally notified international organisations and countries of the change, with the transition process already underway.

A more meaningful name

Over the last 50 years, a trend of smaller nations asserting their independence from old colonial empires has given rise to a growing cultural trend — the national name change.

For many nations like Naoero, the desire to revert to its original, pre-colonial name is about cementing a sense of national identity or pride.

Timor-Leste adopted its current name — a Portuguese tautology in which both words mean “East” — in 2002. It was previously known as Timor Timur — its Indonesian name that, funnily enough, also meant “East East” — from 1975 until independence.

Tuvalu and Kiribati took back their names in 1978 and 1979 respectively, doing away with colonial names the Ellice Islands and Gilbert Islands.

Vanuatu followed suit in 1980, retiring the name New Hebrides after becoming independent.

Overseas, Türkiye was among the most recent major nations to change its name.

Its campaign for a name change started in 2021 when Turkish president Recep Erdoğan began asking various international bodies to observe the traditional spelling and pronunciation.

Erdoğan’s feeling was that the name Türkiye represented “the culture, civilisation and values of the Turkish nation in the best way”.

In 2018, Eswatini retired the name Swaziland to mark the 50th anniversary of Swazi independence. The name means “land of the Swazis” and was chosen, in part, to avoid being confused with Switzerland.

Cabo Verde, recently rising to fame for their underdog run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, officially ended use of the name Cape Verde in 2013.

The change came about after national delegates asked the United Nations to use only Cabo Verde for official purposes rather than the Anglicised version.

Namibia did away with the name Southwest Africa in 1990, while the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire changed from the Ivory Coast in all official capacities in 1986, and has refused to acknowledge any translation of its name from French ever since.

Burkina Faso retired the name Upper Volta in 1984 in favour of combining two words from local languages — “Burkina” (from Mooré, meaning “upright”) and “Faso” (from Dyula, meaning “fatherland”). Other translations note its meaning as “Land of the honest/incorruptible men”.

In 1980, Zimbabwe dropped Rhodesia from its name, one coined by colonialists two decades earlier.

In 1975, the Republic of Dahomey became Benin, and Dutch Guiana became Suriname.

In a significant development in the battle against destructive wildfires in Washington, a local man has been apprehended on charges of first-degree arson. The suspect is linked to the Old Trails Fire, a devastating blaze responsible for obliterating hundreds of structures and compelling mass evacuations in the Spokane region, law enforcement disclosed.

The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci, was arrested following a collaborative effort between detectives from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and investigators from the Washington Department of Natural Resources. Their findings provided sufficient grounds for his arrest, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.

Crucial tips from the public, combined with vital information from responding Airway Heights officers and Spokane County deputies, were instrumental in zeroing in on Farinacci, the sheriff’s office reported.

Authorities have revealed that Farinacci is a convicted felon originally from Arizona. However, they noted that his criminal record does not include any fire-related offenses.

Officials clarified that Farinacci currently has no known ties to two other significant fires raging in the vicinity, specifically the Autumn Lane and Fairview fires.

“We will be looking into any other crimes Mr. Farinacci may have committed in the past,” Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels said during a news briefing.

Nowels said first-degree arson was the charge supported by probable cause at that stage of the investigation and cautioned that the case could change as authorities gathered additional evidence.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Farinacci and a search warrant for his residence in the 2800 block of West Elliott Drive, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies served the warrant Monday and arrested Farinacci without incident. Authorities said detectives found a butane lighter and waterproof matches while detaining and searching him.

Farinacci was booked into the Spokane County Jail and was being held on $1 million bond.

The Old Trails Fire was first reported Saturday near North Old Trails Road and West Euclid Road. It became the largest of three destructive fires burning around Spokane and remained uncontained Monday, according to authorities and wire reports.

Dramatic dashboard camera footage recently released by the Florida Highway Patrol shows the heart-stopping moments when a state trooper raced toward a street takeover that had brought traffic on Interstate 75 to a standstill. As the trooper navigated through a sea of halted vehicles, the high-speed chase that followed hit speeds of 140 mph, according to authorities.

The chase began with an urgency echoed by flashing emergency lights and blaring sirens. The trooper sped along the interstate, quickly approaching a chaotic scene where vehicles blocked all northbound lanes near mile marker 266 in Thonotosassa, shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Upon arrival, the dashcam captured pandemonium as people darted between cars, while others scrambled to get back into their vehicles, adding to the commotion.

With determination, the trooper carefully maneuvered among the clusters of cars before setting his sights on a green BMW, the driver of which was later identified as 25-year-old Yulian Lugo, who was attempting to flee the scene.

Officials reported that Lugo accelerated to an alarming speed of around 140 mph—double the speed limit—before making a swift exit off the interstate, intensifying the pursuit.

The dashcam then showed the trooper following him into what appeared to be a residential neighborhood, where Lugo eventually pulled over without further incident.

The trooper ordered Lugo out of the BMW before placing him in handcuffs.

Moments later, two passengers stepped out before sitting on the hood of the patrol vehicle as the trooper secured the scene.

Lugo was arrested and charged with aggravated fleeing to elude and participating in a street takeover, both felony offenses, authorities said.

Three passengers – a 24-year-old and two 18-year-olds – were also ultimately arrested, and each was charged with misdemeanor highway racing. All four were booked into the Hillsborough County Jail.

Investigators said the incident began around 1:30 a.m. Saturday when hundreds of vehicles blocked all northbound lanes of I-75 while participants allegedly performed burnouts and other stunts in the middle of the interstate.

Investigators alleged Lugo fled the scene as many of the vehicles dispersed when law enforcement arrived, triggering the pursuit shown in the newly released dashcam footage.

The I-75 incident marked the latest in a series of takeover-related events that have drawn increased attention from Florida law enforcement this summer.

In June, the St. Augustine Beach Police Department said it thwarted a planned “teen takeover” before it began after investigators used electronic monitoring to identify plans circulating online.

Earlier this year, Orlando police also released video showing hundreds of riders on e-bikes swarming downtown streets, running red lights, blocking traffic and delaying an ambulance. Officers said the group created a significant public safety hazard and vowed to continue cracking down on similar incidents.

Sidney Starr, widely known from the Love & Hip Hop franchise and also recognized as Sidney Favors, is currently embroiled in serious legal troubles. The reality TV personality is facing multiple felony charges related to child abuse.

The charges against Starr, who is both a transgender model and TV star, include sexual battery of a child under age 16, aggravated child molestation, and sodomy, as outlined in Georgia court records accessed by Oxygen.

Viewers may remember Starr from her appearance in season nine of Love & Hip Hop: New York. Her arrest took place on August 2, following a call to police in Hapeville, Georgia, reporting a sexual assault at an Embassy Suites hotel located in the greater Atlanta area, according to an official press statement.

After being detained, Starr admitted to engaging in the acts but insisted they were consensual, as revealed in an interview with investigators, detailed in an arrest warrant attained by Oxygen.

Currently held without bond at Fulton County Jail, Starr awaits her next court appearance set for August 25, according to the latest court records.

“Because this case involves a juvenile,” the Hapeville Police Department said in a press release sent to Oxygen, “no additional information will be released from our agency.”

Starr previously gained attention in 2012 for falsely claiming she was in a relationship with rapper Chingy after the two posed for a fan photo. The rumor sparked backlash and she later apologized for making up the story, according to TMZ. 

In addition to Love & Hip Hop: New York, Starr has also made appearances on FOX’s Empire and Maury Povich’s titular talk short.  

Just days before her arrest, she shared news of her latest project.

Her attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Oxygen.
