After a two-year marriage with Ryan Reynolds came to an end, Scarlett Johansson was soon seen dating Sean Penn, who is 24 years her senior.

Miley Cyrus caused a global buzz as she was caught kissing Kaitlynn Carter on the very day her breakup with Liam was made public.

And let’s not forget legendary icon Elizabeth Taylor who famously married Richard Burton just 10 days after finalizing her divorce from Eddie Fisher back in 1964.

In 2011 a then 26-year-old Johannsson and Penn, 50, shocked when they sparked up a romance just weeks after the end of her marriage to Reynolds.

Sean and Scarlett’s relationship from the start surprised everyone when it came out of the blue, but according to the insider it was all a result of Scarlett’s pursuing.

The actress is said to have initially chased Sean following his divorce from ex-wife Robin Wright, even though he wasn’t looking for a relationship.

‘Scarlett pursued him,’ they said.

They were also spotted together on a flirty lunch in a Los Angeles restaurant that March when Scarlett rested her legs on the actor’s lap. 

Speculation that there has been trouble brewing in their fledgling relationship began in May when Scarlett was noticeably absent from the premiere of Penn’s latest film, The Tree of Life, at the Cannes Film Festival.

A source then confirmed to People Magazine in June that the pair has indeed called it quits and were no longer an item.

According to reports, the  ‘did not want to be tied down’ to the Lost In Translation actress.

Miley and Kaitlynn’s tumultuous romance began in the wake of their twin splits from their partners.

Kaitlynn initially shared vacation photos of herself aboard a yacht with Miley on August 9 2019, only two days before the Wrecking Ball singer announced that she had separated from her husband Liam Hemsworth whom she’d been married to since December of the previous year. 

On August 11, photos were released of the two women cuddling and kissing aboard a boat, confirming the two had sparked up their own relationship. 

Their tryst reportedly took Liam by surprise. He filed for divorce from the Party In The USA singer after seeing the photos of her and Kaitlynn kissing aboard the boat. 

Kaitlyn had only recently ended her five-year romance with Brody Jenner.

Unraveling the Idaho In-N-Out Shooting: An Armed Citizen Shares Insights

Authorities are diligently investigating the motives behind a tragic shooting event at a bustling In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho. A 24-year-old gunman fatally shot three individuals and injured seven more, ultimately ending his own life after an exchange of gunfire with a bystander and an off-duty Idaho state trooper.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks confirmed on Sunday that Chad Williams acted independently during Saturday’s horrific incident. However, detectives are still in the process of identifying the reasons behind the shooting and piecing together the gunman’s actions leading up to it.

“Their brave actions likely prevented the situation from escalating and causing more harm,” Hicks said, referring to the armed citizen and the officer who returned fire. “We want to extend our appreciation and recognition for the courageous efforts of the off-duty officer and the bystander in halting this tragic event.”

The identities of the trooper and the bystander have not been publicly released. However, the Idaho Statesman highlighted the heroic actions of Jordan Salinas, a 35-year-old from Kimberly, Idaho. Salinas was carrying a FN Five-seveN semi-automatic pistol equipped with a suppressor during the incident.

Salinas, a reported “healthcare worker, the full-time caregiver of his wheelchair-bound brother,” told the paper he took up gun training after a 2021 shooting – never even aiming a gun at an animal – saying he was able to “observe,” “orient” and “decide” that “OK, this is the guy,” he said before being resolute to “act.”

The gunman, he said, was shocked by the armed response.

“He did not like it when bullets started firing both ways,” Salinas, whose girlfriend at the restaurant was stuck in Williams fire, told the Statesman, adding he felt “no fear.”

“There’s a task that needs to be done, and we’re the ones who need to do it,” he added, only standing down when he say police take over the scene, thinking “OK, my part is done.”

The shooter was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near the restaurant, according to police.

“These people are true heroes in our community,” Twin Falls County Sheriff Jack Johnson said. “They diverted the shooter and without a doubt saved many lives.”

Hicks said Williams’ family was cooperating with authorities. Detectives were examining his activities before the shooting and trying to determine whether any victims had been deliberately targeted.

Authorities said seven people were injured. Two remained in critical condition Sunday, three were listed as stable and two had been treated and released from a hospital.

Officials said both fired at Williams during what authorities described as a chaotic and fast-moving attack, diverting his attention from the restaurant as customers and employees fled.

Witness Lane Koehn, 34, said he was stopped at a traffic light near the restaurant when he saw a man carrying an AR-style rifle emerge from the drive-thru. Another man armed with a handgun then began firing at the shooter, Koehn told The Associated Press.

Koehn said he later saw an In-N-Out employee drag a wounded co-worker across the parking lot. The injured worker had been shot in the chest, he said.

“She was pretty bad off, but I don’t know. I hope she made it,” Koehn said.

One of the three people killed was an In-N-Out employee, company owner Lynsi Snyder confirmed in a statement. Officials had not released the victims’ identities as they worked to notify relatives.

“My heart is broken, my chest is heavy, my eyes burn from the tears I’ve shed,” Snyder said. “We lost one of our beautiful associates tonight.”

“In-N-Out will be mourning with the families and praying for them as they tread through a very painful season.”

Snyder said the employee had been caring for customers when she was killed. The company was working with police and offering support to victims, employees and their families.

The shooting erupted Saturday afternoon at the recently opened restaurant in a busy commercial area where hundreds of shoppers, diners and employees were believed to have been present.

Twin Falls resident Haley Dodaro said she and her mother were waiting in the drive-thru when they saw workers running from the restaurant and people fleeing across the road.

“At first,” Dodaro said, she thought there might have been a fire. A person directing traffic then warned them that there was an active shooter.

“People were running out crying and screaming,” she said. “It was very scary.”

Nayeli Rodriguez, who was inside the restaurant with her daughters, said an employee told customers to get down after gunfire was heard near the kitchen. An older man tried to shield Rodriguez and her children before they escaped.

“We were trying to get as far as we could, and some angels let us in their car,” Rodriguez said.

A local taxi company said one of its drivers, Terry Dudley, was shot twice in the back while charging his Tesla near the restaurant. North Star Taxi said Dudley survived but faced “a very long road ahead.”

Salinas posted a humble Facebook message urging focus on “victims, their families, and everyone affected.”

“The last 24 hours have been overwhelming,” the message posted late Sunday night read. “I want to sincerely thank my family, friends, and everyone who has reached out with messages, prayers, and support. I haven’t been able to respond to everyone yet, but please know I’ve seen your messages, and they mean more to me than I can put into words.

“In the coming days, I’ll share a more complete account of what happened, to the best of my recollection, when I’m able.

“For now, my heart remains with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by yesterday’s tragedy. Thank you for continuing to keep them in your thoughts and prayers, and thank you all for the incredible support you’ve shown me and my family.”

The FBI asked members of the public to submit photographs and video recorded during the attack. Twin Falls police also urged anyone who witnessed the shooting or had relevant information to contact investigators.

On Instagram this past weekend, Hylands’ son, Luke, delivered the heartbreaking news, writing, “I am heartbroken to share the news that my Dad Scott has passed away Wednesday night.”

Luke expressed that he and his family are grappling with the overwhelming loss, noting they’re “still trying to process this horrible loss.”

Reflecting on his father’s legacy, Luke described Hylands as his “forever hero and best friend,” adding, “There simply are not enough words I can say about you right now.”

He concluded his heartfelt tribute with, “Always and forever. I love you. Goodbye Dad. xo.”

At the start of his post, Luke called Hylands “Husband, Father, Actor, Director, Writer, Storyteller, Friend, and lover of life.”

In a press briefing held on Sunday, authorities highlighted the role of two brave individuals who exchanged gunfire with a suspect during a confrontation at an In-N-Out location in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Earlier reports from – News suggested that a bystander who was armed intervened by firing at the suspect, with an eyewitness noting that this individual’s prompt action likely averted further tragedy.

However, during the conference, officials clarified that it was not solely this armed citizen who engaged with the suspect; an off-duty police officer also fired shots at the perpetrator.

The New York Times cited comments from Twin Falls County Sheriff Jack Johnson, who praised both the citizen and the off-duty officer, stating, “These individuals are heroes in our community, and their quick response undoubtedly diverted a larger tragedy.”

KARK quoted Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks expressing gratitude, “We believe their actions deterred the suspect from the scene, thus averting more harm. We want to publicly acknowledge and commend the off-duty officer and the citizen for their courageous intervention.”

The attacker reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and – News observed that police identified the deceased individual as a 24-year-old man.

Three people were killed in the attack, including one In-N-Out employee.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Early this morning, 67-year-old Michael Scott Vicary was taken into custody following accusations of breaking into a occupied apartment close to the university campus and rummaging through the refrigerator and kitchen cupboards.

At approximately 2:19 a.m. on August 2, a police officer from the Gainesville Police Department was dispatched to an apartment complex located at 1235 NW 5th Avenue. One of the residents was alerted by strange noises coming from the kitchen, prompting her to investigate and find an unfamiliar man searching through the refrigerator and cabinets. She described the intruder as a white male, estimated to be between 70 and 80 years old, dressed in a flannel shirt.

Vicary, fitting the provided description, was discovered in the vicinity of the apartment building’s lobby. Additional officers located the victim’s work ID badge among Vicary’s possessions, and the resident confirmed his identity as the individual she had seen in her kitchen.

During a search conducted in connection with the arrest, officers reportedly found a metal water bottle and a glass cup, both of which belonged to the victims.

Post Miranda, Vicary reportedly confessed to entering the apartment because the door was unlocked, and he admitted to taking the victim’s badge before leaving the apartment. He said he does not live in the building and was just checking it out.

Vicary, whose address is listed as GRACE Marketplace, has been charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling and petit theft. He has no local criminal history, but he has an extensive criminal history over the past three years in Palm Beach County; he was most recently convicted of shoplifting on June 1 and sentenced to time served. Judge Denise Ferrero set bail at $150,000.

Over recent times, several key figures from the liberal spectrum have been coming to terms with a stark realization: the Democratic Party they once stood by seems to have strayed far from its original path. Among those acknowledging this shift is Bill Maher.

Known for his outspoken style, Maher has previously highlighted how he faced significant backlash from the left for the simple act of sitting down with former President Trump. Unintentionally thrust into the public eye, two dedicated Northern Territory Police officers have found themselves at the center of a heartbreaking case.

Sergeant Chris Harden and acting sergeant Karl von Minden were part of the team that discovered the body of a young girl identified as Kumanjayi Little Baby, located on the outskirts of Alice Springs.

In accordance with Warlpiri cultural customs, the name of the deceased has been altered, as traditional practices prohibit the mention of a person’s name after their passing.

The two officers spoke exclusively to SBS News for the first time about the enormous five-day search effort that made international headlines.

It culminated in the discovery of her remains, and within hours the arrest of 49-year-old Jefferson Lewis, who has been charged with her murder.

The two search and rescue specialists were having an extremely busy year. The top end of Australia is flood and cyclone central, and they’d been travelling from disaster to disaster.

Von Minden’s job was to coordinate and oversee the sprawling search operation that involved a call out for volunteers; hundreds arrived, some even flew to Alice Springs to help.

Harden was on the front lines of the grid search, walking metre by metre through buffel grass that had grown high and ominous in the summer rains, wrangling a group of volunteers each day.

“There was holes, washouts, everything which you just could not see,” Harden recalled.

“There was a big risk that someone was get bitten by a snake, fall down a hole, do an ankle. But everyone was united. The community were just unbelievable.”

Both of them barely slept and neither of them had worked on a search of that scale and complexity before.

“That was quite a unique operation, I think, across the territory. We have coordinated quite large search and rescues before, but never to the scale where we had so many civilian volunteers helping and the amount of people out there and the terrain that we were looking at,” von Minden said.

“You go outside and suddenly there’s 200 people volunteering, putting their name down, wanting to search,” Harden said.

They paid tribute to all the services that got involved.

Their police colleagues, the SES, Defence, fire services and all the government agencies and organisations that downed tools on their normal jobs to join forces in the quest to locate the little girl.

“If we didn’t have that, yeah, we could still be, you know, searching for her,” Harden said.

Hundreds of volunteers rolling up to walk the lands, cook the food and provide other support ended up being crucial; one even flew down from Darwin to lend a hand.

“It really was an honour to serve alongside all those people that came in and helped us,” von Minden said.

“It was a time that we really needed that support from the community, and they really stood up and helped us.”

After five days of around the clock efforts, Kumanjayi Little Baby’s body was found.

It was devastating.

“I think we were always confident we were going to get an outcome. It wasn’t the outcome that we were hoping,” Harden said quietly.

“Our mission was to was to find her and bring her back to a place of safety. We always had hope that we were going to find her, but yeah, as we know, it wasn’t the case.

“But at least there was closure for the family, for us, for the volunteers.”

‘We all had a purpose’

The Northern Territory Police executive director of cultural reform, Leanne Liddle, is an Arrente woman from central Australia.

She also became a public voice for Kumanjayi Little Baby’s family when they got the worst news any family can get.

Liddle has also been at the forefront of the efforts to tackle racism in the NT police force, and acknowledges the relationship between the police and Indigenous community in central Australia has been incredibly fraught after a series of death in custody investigations.

But she is hopeful the unity of the community and police in this moment will be a turning point for the relationship.

She described the two officers as “amazing people”.

“We were looking for a little lost girl in pink. We weren’t looking for a little lost Aboriginal girl who was at a town camp at the end of the day,” she said.

“We all had a purpose, and we all were involved, and that was what everybody wanted to do was to find this little girl. And though it was tragic that we found her, it was closure for the family, particularly mum.”

‘It’s been very humbling’

The two police officers have come to the north-east Arnhem Land Garma Festival as a way to come to terms with the enormity of the effort, and the aftermath.

“Watching the Garma Festival makes you proud to be an Australian when you’re here and a spectator involved,” von Minden said.

“It’s been very humbling,” Harden said.

“You move on, you get to that, and you don’t have time to reflect, and you don’t think about the impacts.

“I just didn’t think people sort of really sort of, yeah, showed that affection or care for us, and yeah, it’s yeah, it’s been very, very emotional, and yeah, I’ve been just yeah blown away with that response. It’s been great.”

“There’s this armour, you know, there’s this expectation that police officers, particularly in these roles, are hardened, they have very little emotion,” Liddle said.

“But the dignity and respect, and you know, the what I saw and behind the scenes and seeing the community, the respect they’ve showed them here while at Garma has just been incredible, and I think it goes towards healing.”

While both officers were front and centre of the search efforts and public communication throughout the search, they didn’t realise that people would recognise them.

They didn’t have time to watch the news or see how the story had spread across the country and the world.

“We don’t see that it’s a national on TV. That yeah, the whole Australia are behind her, and just you know, supporting the community and trying to hope that we do find come and try a little baby,” Harden said.

“Until you sort of get back to Darwin, have a time to sort of have a sleep, reflect, and you go, wow, we sort of were involved in something sort of quite remarkable.”

Bryan Kohberger seeks to withdraw guilty plea in Idaho murder case

In a surprising turn of events, Bryan Kohberger, who stands accused in the tragic killings of four University of Idaho students, is seeking to retract his previous guilty plea. In a post-conviction petition, Kohberger claims he was subjected to ineffective legal counsel, coerced into the plea, misled by disinformation, and falsely promised certain outcomes. This legal maneuver aims to secure a new trial. While this move has left the victims’ families, including Kaylee Goncalves’ mother, disheartened, it hasn’t caught them off guard.

According to experts, Kohberger is facing formidable challenges in his bid to reverse his guilty plea in the murder case revolving around the four university students. A seasoned attorney, who once represented the infamous D.C. sniper Lee Boyd Malvo and has a history of helping clients successfully withdraw pleas, explained the complexity of Kohberger’s situation.

Mark Petrovich, a lawyer with extensive experience in criminal defense and post-conviction proceedings, provided insight into this rare legal process. Speaking to News Media, Petrovich pointed out that defendants often struggle to rescind guilty pleas post-sentencing, particularly when the claims involve unrecognized exculpatory evidence prior to the plea agreement.

Petrovich advised against drawing too close a parallel between Kohberger’s current legal efforts and Malvo’s past appeals. The latter’s appeals were influenced by evolving constitutional laws concerning juvenile sentencing, whereas Kohberger is an adult attempting to nullify a plea deal strategically designed to sidestep the death penalty.

“This is truly a monumental uphill battle,” cautioned Petrovich. “First, convincing the judge to permit the plea withdrawal is challenging, and subsequently prevailing in potential new proceedings poses even greater difficulties due to substantial obstacles.”

Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 to the stabbing deaths of University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves in Moscow, Idaho, in November 2022. He was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole after accepting a plea agreement that spared him from the death penalty.

In recent court filings, Kohberger claimed he was pressured into accepting the plea agreement, did not fully understand potentially exculpatory evidence before pleading guilty and was misled about the conditions he would face while incarcerated.

He contends those factors undermined the voluntariness of his decision to plead guilty.

Petrovich said he once represented a client who sought to withdraw a guilty plea before sentencing. A judge granted the request, the case proceeded to trial and the client was acquitted, but he said Kohberger’s circumstances are fundamentally different because he has already been sentenced.

“You can’t wait until after you’re sentenced and see what the consequences of the plea are and then change your plea,” Petrovich said. “It’s going to be a very, very difficult burden to overcome.”

Petrovich said Kohberger would face two significant hurdles even if a judge allowed him to withdraw his plea.

One would be convincing jurors after previously admitting guilt under oath.

Even if a judge allowed Kohberger to withdraw his plea, Petrovich said jurors would almost certainly learn he had already admitted guilt, creating another significant obstacle at trial.

“One thing that’s important is that you still can’t hide from the jury the fact that you said under oath that you’re guilty,” Petrovich said. “Even if you withdraw, then you have to explain that … if you’re going to get anywhere with any kind of jury finding.”

Petrovich also questioned whether Kohberger’s attorneys would have advised him to accept a plea agreement without first reviewing the evidence disclosed during discovery.

He noted that defense attorneys handling capital cases typically spend years reviewing discovery before recommending whether a client should plead guilty.

“The attorneys on the case … were intimately familiar with the evidence and the information that was provided to them by law enforcement and prosecution,” Petrovich said. “I’m sure they knew all about everything. If they encouraged him or if there was a discussion and a plea was decided on, I’m sure it was for good reason.”

Kohberger’s case is not the first involving a notorious killer who later sought to undo a guilty plea.

James Earl Ray pleaded guilty in 1969 to assassinating the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to avoid a potential death sentence. Three days after entering his guilty plea, Ray sought to withdraw it, arguing he had been pressured into confessing. He spent the rest of his life trying to undo the plea but died in prison in 1998 without ever receiving the jury trial he sought.

Serial killer Clifton Bloomfield unsuccessfully sought to withdraw guilty pleas after admitting to five murders in New Mexico to avoid capital punishment. Washington serial killer Robert Lee Yates Jr. also challenged his plea agreement after admitting to murdering 13 women, but courts ultimately rejected both efforts.

Kohberger’s plea agreement spared him from facing a capital trial and ended years of pretrial litigation in one of the country’s most closely watched murder prosecutions.

Petrovich said that history, combined with the years of discovery and plea negotiations leading up to Kohberger’s agreement, makes the effort to withdraw it especially difficult.
