A seaside celebration in Bali turned terrifying when a balloon reportedly burst inside a well-known restaurant, triggering a fast-moving fire that tore through the venue.

Footage from the scene showed flames engulfing Chez Gado-Gado in the popular Seminyak resort district on Sunday. The blaze left an Australian teenager in hospital with burn injuries, according to 7News.

Witness Tara Borelli, from Sydney, said the incident unfolded during a 70th birthday gathering. “There was a 70th birthday, and they had two balloons on their table and a waitress went to light the candle on the birthday cake, but she lit it a bit too close to the balloon,” Borelli told News.com.au. “It popped, then exploded. We felt the heat from the pop.”

Borelli said panic spread almost instantly as the restaurant’s straw roof caught alight. “I just grabbed my daughter and little cousin and ran straight onto the beach towards the water,” she said, adding that “within minutes” the entire restaurant was burning.

“It lit up like a firecracker… people were screaming and crying and running around,” Paul Cole, another witness, told 9News.

The Badung Fire and Rescue Service said it took more than two hours to put out the flames and there were no casualties, according to The Bali Sun.

First Inspector I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya of the Denpasar Police, citing statements from witnesses at the scene, told reporters Monday that the fire is “strongly suspected” to have started after a balloon “was hit by a candle flame, causing it to explode and catch fire,” the website added.

“Initial extinguishing efforts using fire extinguishers by restaurant staff were unsuccessful because the fire had already grown large and spread quickly to the thatched roof,” he reportedly said.

One witness told 9News, “There are the balloons, a lot of explosions, explosion and explosion and explosion, it was just, yeah, it was terrible.”

“It was just bedlam,” added Joe Xuereb, another witness. “As soon as the fire started, people didn’t know what to do.”

The restaurant now says on its website that it is “temporarily closed.”

Patrick Clancy has opted to remain hundreds of miles from the Massachusetts courthouse where jurors are weighing the fate of his ex-wife, Lindsay Clancy.

The jury, made up of nine women and three men, was dismissed Tuesday after a fourth day of deliberations ended without a verdict. The panel is expected to return Wednesday morning to continue its discussions.

Earlier in the day, jurors sent a note to the judge indicating they had not been able to reach a unanimous decision.

As concerns grew over the possibility of a mistrial, Patrick remained in New York City, where he lives in an apartment with his new wife, fertility specialist Rachel Danis.

The 38-year-old father, still grieving, has been seen in Manhattan on multiple occasions since Thursday afternoon, when the jury first began considering its verdict.

He has been seen looking tense, making phone calls and grocery shopping as he hunkers down in the city – each time wearing sunglasses and keeping a low profile.

Patrick has been cruelly harassed throughout the trial after online conspiracy theories falsely claimed that he was somehow involved in the deaths of his children, despite evidence showing he was not at the family home when they were killed.

The Daily Mail has spoken to relatives of Patrick, as well as criminologist Dr Casey Jordan, who together paint a picture of a man determined to shield himself from a firestorm.

Jordan, a professor at Western Connecticut State University, said Patrick has doubtless stayed away from the Plymouth courtroom out of a need for privacy and self-protection.

‘He’s in a bunker,’ Jordan told the Daily Mail.

‘He is fully aware of the vitriol against him, and everyone who wants to hold him responsible for the acts of his wife.’

Jordan praised Patrick for rebuilding his life in the aftermath of the tragedy and described his online critics in blunt terms: ‘Vultures picking his shattered bones.’

She said people have a deep need to hold someone accountable for such a horrific loss, and that widespread sympathy for Lindsay, 36, has seen many strangers direct their anger toward Patrick instead.

‘We can’t shake our fist at God, so Patrick is next in line,’ she said.

She added: ‘We shouldn’t punish husbands for the sins of their wives.’

Patrick has not appeared at the trial since he testified at the end of July.

On Friday, many wondered whether he would attend the final stage of the trial to get a sense of closure.

But the prospect of walking back into the Plymouth courthouse may hardly have been an appealing one.

Outside the courthouse, crowds of women have gathered to support Lindsay, some openly condemning Patrick and repeating baseless claims.

Lindsay has already admitted to strangling all three of their children with fitness bands in January 2023.

But she insists she is not guilty of murder because she was in the grip of severe postpartum psychosis during the killings and could not comprehend what she was doing.

Jurors at Plymouth Superior Court have been asked to decide whether Lindsay deliberately murdered five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan inside their Duxbury family home.

They can find her guilty of murder, convict her of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, or find her not criminally responsible because of mental illness.

Since Lindsay killed their children, she has been held at Tewksbury Hospital, where she has remained since May 2023.

In that time, Patrick has been rebuilding and turning to a new chapter of his life.

He divorced Lindsay, relocated to New York City in May 2023, and sold the family’s Duxbury home in May 2024.

Throughout it all, he has continued to publicly defend his ex-wife against critics who brand her a monster, insisting she was driven to violence by a devastating mental health collapse rather than calculated cruelty.

He has not visited her in hospital since the killings.

Photos of Patrick with Rachel Danis, 37, first surfaced online the following February, and she eventually moved into his Midtown apartment.

By late last year, she was photographed wearing what appeared to be an engagement ring, and the couple married this past April in a small, intimate ceremony in Central Park.

Both he and Rachel have reportedly received death threats, with their personal details posted publicly as part of a sustained harassment campaign.

One member of the Clancy family, speaking to the Daily Mail on condition of anonymity, said it has been a hard time for the family.

‘Obviously, this is a very hard time for everybody in the family,’ the relative said.

Another relative said the ordeal has taken a heavy toll on Patrick as he tries to push forward with his life, adding that he has been seen viewing apartments in his area.

‘I think he is doing okay under the circumstances,’ the relative said. ‘It’s very stressful for the whole family.’

In Plymouth, Judge William Sullivan ordered the jury to continue deliberating after they told him Tuesday morning that they were unable to reach a unanimous decision.

‘I know that this was a long trial,’ he said. ‘I know there were over 80 witnesses, over 300 exhibits. But because of that, I’m going to ask you to go back out, keeping in mind all the instructions that I gave you, to go out and to continue your deliberations at this time.’

Lindsay, dressed in a beige sweater, showed no visible emotion as the judge spoke, with her parents and sister seated nearby in the courtroom.

She faces three counts of first-degree murder, a charge that carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Jurors also have the option of convicting her of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, which carries a far shorter sentence, or finding her not guilty by reason of lacking criminal responsibility, a verdict that would likely send her back into psychiatric commitment.

Should the jury remain deadlocked, the judge retains the power to declare a mistrial.

The outcome of Lindsay’s murder trial could also affect something else Patrick holds dear – his fight for justice for his three dead children.

The Microsoft salesman is suing the healthcare providers who treated Lindsay in the months before the killings, arguing that their alleged failures contributed to the deaths of his children. The providers have denied the claims.

Legal experts say a guilty verdict would establish, in the eyes of the law, that Lindsay was criminally responsible for the deaths of Cora, Dawson and Callan.

That could significantly complicate Patrick’s $1 million wrongful-death lawsuit against her healthcare providers, potentially making it harder to argue that their actions were a cause of the children’s deaths.

A mistrial could create fresh complications for Patrick, including the possibility that he may have to testify again if Lindsay faces a retrial.

Two Ukrainian citizens were injured early Wednesday after an explosion near a train station in Augsburg, Germany, authorities said.

German police temporarily shut down Augsburg’s main train station after discovering a suspicious package in the wake of the blast. Investigators later determined the item posed no threat, allowing rail service to resume at around 10 a.m. local time. Officials said the injured victims were a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man, though their names have not been released.

“We can give the all-clear — the object we found in front of the main train station was harmless, and we have reopened the station,” police spokesperson Timo Küfner told The Associated Press. “The trains are running again, too.”

The explosion happened shortly after 3 a.m. local time and left both victims with only minor injuries, police said.

“It’s still too early to say anything about a possible motive for the overnight explosion, but we are investigating,” said Küfner.

The incident comes just a day after Germany accused Russia of carrying out a failed drone sabotage operation at the Leipzig/Halle Airport.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Russia’s consulate in Bonn will be closed and the contract for the Russian House cultural center in Berlin will be terminated after German authorities concluded Moscow was behind the Aug. 4 incident.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said forensic evidence and intelligence findings tied Russia to the attack, in which authorities found a drone carrying an explosive device beside a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport.

Officials said the device failed to explode because of a faulty detonator.

Germany also said it believes a second drone collided with a nearby cargo aircraft, while officials have linked the incident to what Dobrindt described as Russia’s “well-established pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe.”

The Russian Embassy in Berlin called the accusation “absurd,” while Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow would respond in a “mirror-image” fashion to Germany’s actions. The embassy later described Berlin’s measures as an “unprecedented escalation in Russian-German relations.”

In addition to closing Russian diplomatic facilities, Wadephul announced tighter entry restrictions for Russian nationals and additional measures targeting Russia’s shadow fleet. He also said he had summoned Russia’s ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechayev.

Hayden Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, was photographed barefoot and crouched beneath a bar table during an arrest that took place a year before the actress’s death.

The attempt to stay out of sight appeared unsuccessful, with one photo showing a Los Angeles Sheriff’s deputy standing directly over the table where Hickerson was hiding.

The photos surfaced two weeks after Panettiere died on August 16 at a residence in Greenville, where officials said the death was suspected to be a drug “overdose.” Hickerson was reportedly with her at the time.

At the time of the West Hollywood bar incident, sources told the outlet that Hickerson had entered the Los Angeles hotspot appearing to be under the influence and behaving erratically.

Hickerson allegedly broke a drinking glass at the bar and things escalated even more as it was claimed that he threw one of his shoes at another person who was eating at the restaurant, which led the staff to ask him to leave according to insiders for TMZ. 

The sources went on to claim that Hickerson began ‘freaking out’ so an employee attempted to physically remove him but he refused to go so police were called.

TMZ’s insiders also said that law enforcement also had trouble getting Hickerson to leave but they eventually were able to remove him and arrested him outside of the establishment. 

The owner of Barney’s Beanery told the publication that Hickerson is not banned from the restaurant and is allowed to return.

Prosecutors declined to file charges due to insufficient evidence, though he was arrested again four days later for allegedly being under the influence of a controlled substance. He entered a diversion program and had the case dismissed after completing 10 Narcotics Anonymous meetings according to TMZ. 

The bizarre images come days after it was revealed that Hickerson had reportedly exchanged messages with a Greenville, South Carolina, woman in the months before the death of the Heroes star.

Hickerson sent text messages and Instagram DMs to the 26-year-old woman, Page Six reported on Thursday after reviewing the exchanges.

The woman, who spoke with the outlet on condition of anonymity, told the outlet that she initially crossed paths with Hickerson on March 28 at the Greenville bar Cat’s Pajamas.

It was not clear what the relationship status was between Panettiere and Hickerson at the time the woman said she was in touch with Hickerson, as Page Six reported it couldn’t determine ‘whether there was any overlap’ in the timeframe, noting they had been photographed at March 2 at LAX Airport.

The Daily Mail previously reached out to attorneys for Hickerson and reps for the late Panettiere for further comment on the story but has yet to hear back.

The woman told the outlet that she had been ‘heavily intoxicated’ at the time she claims she first crossed paths with Hickerson, and as a result did not ‘remember much of that night.’

The woman told Page Six that Hickerson on March 29 followed her Instagram page from his, since-deactivated, account under the handle @brianhickerson_.

The outlet reported that a message to the woman sent from Hickerson’s account read: ‘Great meeting you last night pretty lady. I owe you a date. I’m heading to [C]ity Tavern for a slushie in a bit you should join.’

The woman told Page Six that she wasn’t aware of who Hickerson was and didn’t have any ‘knowledge’ about his link to Panettiere, as the outlet noted it saw text messages with a friend to support her statement.

On April 1, the woman replied to Hickerson, explaining that her memory of the evening was limited, according to the outlet.

She wrote, according to Page Six, ‘Hey Brian! I’m sorry I missed this – I’m awful with my inbox. I have to be so honest, I don’t remember much of that night. What happened?

‘I’m sorry I missed your slushy invite but I for sure would not have made it. Today is the first day I’ve had a clear mind since Saturday night.’

Hickerson told the woman that she ‘didn’t seem too drunk,’ Page Six reported, adding that he’d gone out that evening since his brother ‘was in town.’

According to the outlet, Hickerson told the woman that she asked him to take her ‘somewhere nice on a date’ – which ‘clearly throws Waffle House out the window’ – and he suggested he could take her to the Greenville eatery Halls Chophouse.

Hickerson wrote to the woman, according to Page Six, that he ‘just moved here from Los Angeles so it was nice meeting a pretty girl in Greenville out of the blue.

‘I also realized after I reached out on instagram you gave me your number so I’ll shoot you a text if that’s better.’

The woman told Hickerson in reply that she didn’t remember the details he had shared with her, asking what part of the club they met in and how old he was, noting that she was 25 (at the time), according to Page Six.

The woman told Hickerson she would ‘definitely prefer to meet properly,’ according to Page Six, adding that she doesn’t go to Waffle House until ‘the 12th-ish date, with Hickerson commenting it was ‘very intimate’ place to go on a first date.

According to the outlet, Hickerson told the woman they had initially met ‘in the middle of the dance floor.’

Hickerson, who has since turned 37, said of his age, ‘I’m 36 but I read on a 25 year old level. Is that a deal breaker?’ Page Six reported.

The woman replied with an emoji indicating she was amused, according to the outlet, saying they should first go to the upscale restaurant then, once they’ve ‘known each other for a while,’ dine at Waffle House.

According to Page Six, Hickerson told the woman he had found her ‘just as adorable’ as when they initially had met ‘the other night,’ then asked where she was from.

Hickerson told the woman that he had been ‘ten vodka sodas deep’ and thought she told him she was from Alabama, according to the outlet, to which she said that she was from Greenville.

Hickerson told the woman that he had grown up in Greenville ‘as well,’ according to Page Six, then asking her where she went to school.

The woman told Page Six that she had ‘stopped corresponding’ with Hickerson, having had ‘lost interest’ in him on the basis of the age differential and lack of memory about their initial encounter.

Hickerson subsequently sent a series of text messages that the woman did not reply to, Page Six reported, on April 2 and April 4, writing on the latter date, ‘Im gonna be out of town for work till next Monday. So how about we shoot for halls mid week?’

That day, he also replied to an Instagram Story she posted urging those who didn’t have anyone to attend Easter Sunday services with to contact her, according to the outlet.

Hickerson said, according to Page Six: ‘Goodness you must be reading my mind haha I was gonna skip tomorrow because it was just me. Where do you go?’

Hickerson last sent the woman a text April 14, according to the outlet, writing, ‘Hey hey, I’m back in town this week. When am I taking you to hall’s?’

The woman told the outlet that she did not respond to Hickerson, and the first time she heard his name in the time since was when news broke of Panettiere’s passing.

She told Page Six: ‘I vaguely remembered the name and began looking through my direct messages.

‘The possibility that I had unknowingly become connected to a high-profile relationship, especially in these unfortunate circumstances, was beyond my comprehension.’

The woman told Page Six that Hickerson had never spoken about his relationship with Panettiere; and after her death she first learned about his past domestic abuse convictions linked to their relationship. 

On August 20, Hickerson’s lawyer Sloan Ellis said in a statement obtained by The Daily Mail: ‘Hayden’s death remains under investigation and it is important to allow that investigation to proceed.

‘As has been publicly reported, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play,’ Ellis said. ‘Out of respect for Hayden’s loved ones and the ongoing investigation, there will be no further comment at this time.’

Hickerson and Panettiere, who had been linked since 2018, had a stormy history in which he had been convicted of domestic abuse in connection with their relationship. 

Hickerson in April of 2021 entered pleas of no contest to a pair of felony counts of domestic abuse in an agreement after he was initially charged with eight counts of domestic violence, including assault with a deadly weapon, battery and corporal injury, in Los Angeles in July of 2020.

He received a 45-day jail sentence and probation for four years from the court, which ordered him to complete classes on domestic violence following the pleas of no contest.

The other charges were subsequently dropped following the pleas, and Panettiere had been issued a protective order spanning five years, which had expired earlier this year.

Panettiere put out a statement in 2020 saying she hoped she could serve as an example for others in a similar situation.

‘I am coming forward with the truth about what happened to me,’ she said, ‘in the hope that my story will empower others in abusive relationships to get the help they need and deserve.’

Panettiere in her memoir said she had not wanted ‘to be a spokesperson for domestic violence,’ adding: ‘I never wanted to call myself a victim, but here I am.’

She said in the book: ‘It’s part of my story whether I want it to be or not. So, I’ll lay it all out here: seven years of mental illness, addiction, rage, abuse and pain in just a few pages.

‘You never forget the first time someone slaps you nor do you forget the last … the slaps become hits.’

This past May, Hickerson spoke with TMZ about past instances of domestic violence and abuse in his relationship with the actress, which she detailed in her memoir.  

‘I got arrested for abusing her, and I wouldn’t blame her friends for being pissed off with me, so I don’t really have much to say on that,’ said Hickerson, who was first linked to the late actress in 2018. ‘You never lay hands on a woman, bottom line.’

Hickerson detailed a horrifying story that Panettiere wrote about in her memoir.

He said: ‘There’s a story where I was drunk, right? Hayden was standing across the room and I had a phone in my hand and I said, “Hayden, I’ll give you 10 seconds to run as fast as you can before I throw it at you.”‘ 

Hickerson continued: ‘Who wants to read something about themselves, right? But you gotta be vulnerable and I did it. I did it, so.’

He said he was in ‘such a dark place’ involving ‘drugs’ and ‘alcohol,’ adding, ‘Good God, almighty, she’s five foot two on paper, four-foot-11 in real life. I mean, come on.’

Panettiere’s passing was announced August 16 by her father Skip, who said in a statement: ‘It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden.

‘She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her – and to the millions who watched her onscreen. We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.’

Authorities in Greenville, South Carolina said that officials responded to an apartment in the area on August 16 after receiving a report of an ‘unresponsive female’ via a possible ‘drug overdose,’ subsequently determined to be Panettiere.

Officials, who attempted lifesaving measures prior to declaring the actress deceased, said that no signs of trauma or foul play were evident in their probe into Panettiere’s death, which remains ongoing.

An Iranian drone strike ignited a fire in Kuwait City, while Bahrain said it shot down incoming drones, as Tehran targeted US allies across the Gulf early Wednesday after a night of American airstrikes that Iranian officials claim included a deadly attack on a wedding party.

The renewed violence shattered a monthlong pause in direct fighting between the US and Iran, deepening uncertainty over how to bring the conflict to an end. The war has already driven up oil prices, unsettled the global economy and created mounting political challenges for US President Trump’s Republican Party ahead of the November midterm elections.

Tensions have climbed sharply since the weekend, when the US military struck Iranian rocket launchers on an island in the Strait of Hormuz. American officials said the launchers were being prepared to fire mines into the critical waterway. Iran responded by launching missiles at US bases in Jordan, though all were intercepted.

US allies in the region fend off Iranian attacks

Iran also launched drones toward Kuwait late Tuesday, which were intercepted. A day earlier, the United Arab Emirates said it had intercepted an Iranian drone approaching over its waters.

Bahrain, home to a key US naval base, said its air defense systems intercepted incoming fire from Iran early Wednesday. In a statement, the Bahraini military accused Tehran of carrying out “attacks targeting civilians.”

Also on Wednesday, Kuwait’s government communications center said a fire broke out at a residential complex in the capital after it was hit by an Iranian drone at dawn. It said the blaze had been contained and there were no casualties.

Elsewhere in the region, in Iraq where Iranian-backed proxy forces are active, Kurdistan’s Counter-Terrorism Directorate said it had intercepted 10 drones laden with explosives in the Irbil area. Iranian television reported that American bases in Irbil had been targeted.

Israel’s military also said that Iran-backed Hezbollah fired two explosive drones at its soldiers in southern Lebanon but there were no casualties.

The US Central Command said Tuesday’s strikes focused on Iranian military targets including air defense sites, radar systems and maritime assets.

One US strike hit a home hosting a wedding, according to Iranian media. At least five people were killed, including a child, and at least 68 were wounded, Iranian officials said.

Images from Iran’s semiofficial Tasnim news agency showed several hospitalized children being treated for injuries.

Footage from the Iranian Red Crescent showed rescue workers entering a damaged home in the wake of the strike, with debris scattered all around. It showed a hole in the roof of one house in a neighborhood of densely packed homes.

“Make no mistake: these crimes will not go unpunished,” Ebrahim Azizi, chairperson of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on X.

The US military said it was aware of the report but that it “never targets civilians.”

The Strait of Hormuz remains largely shut down

During last month’s lull in fighting, the US ramped up economic pressure on Iran, which is suffering from soaring inflation, negative growth and a collapsing currency, as Washington sought to win concessions to fully open the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping traffic.

About a fifth of the world’s traded oil was shipped through the key waterway before Israel and the US attacked Iran on Feb. 28 and Iran largely shut it down. Despite many pronouncements from Washington that the strait is open, only a handful of ships are making the passage each day and Iran has regularly attacked vessels.

On Wednesday, Saudi shipping company Bahri said two Filipino sailors were killed in an attack late Monday as their vessel transited the strait.

Since the fighting resumed, the price of Brent crude oil, the international standard, climbed above $95, up more than 30% from the start of the war.

In launching its latest attacks, US Central Command said it was responding to Tehran trying to hit commercial ships and American forces in the Middle East.

Trump offered an additional explanation, telling Fox News in a phone call that US forces struck radar systems that Iran had been trying to rebuild.

“We waited until it was almost built and then we hit it,” he said.

Late Tuesday, Trump said he would not force Iran to the bargaining table.

“I couldn’t care less if they sign a worthless, to them, agreement. I like our position now much better, with almost total control of the Hormuz Strait, and their economy totally collapsing. They are just playing out the inevitable. When are the Iranian people going to rise up and fight?” Trump wrote on social media.

Earlier, Trump had appeared to pivot toward trying to bend Iran to his will through economic sanctions. He warned that if Iran retaliated for the new strikes, “they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level.”
