Deliberations in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial were expected to continue Wednesday, following a day in which jurors informed the judge they remained divided over whether the Massachusetts mother should be held criminally responsible for the deaths of her three children.

The panel, then in its fourth day of weighing the case, sent a note Tuesday morning to Judge William Sullivan saying it had not been able to reach the unanimous agreement required for either a guilty verdict or an acquittal. Sullivan instructed the jurors to continue deliberating, a standard step in criminal trials when a jury signals it is struggling to come to a decision.

Jurors returned to the deliberation room and continued their discussions behind closed doors for the remainder of the day. Around 3:30 p.m., they asked to be dismissed for the evening and to pick up their deliberations again the next morning.

Clancy, 36, a former labor and delivery nurse, has not disputed that she strangled her children. Her defense has argued that postpartum psychosis drove her actions, while prosecutors maintain she understood what she was doing at the time. She has pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility.

Throughout the trial, jurors heard from family members and medical professionals about Clancy’s deteriorating mental health in the months leading up to the killings, including her use of multiple medications and a brief stay at a psychiatric facility. Psychiatric experts for the prosecution and defense offered sharply conflicting opinions about her mental state when her children died.

If jurors ultimately can’t agree on a verdict, the judge could declare a mistrial. Prosecutors would then have to decide whether to put Clancy on trial again, drop the charges or try to negotiate a plea deal with her lawyer.

After court ended Tuesday, Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, said he saw it as a good sign that the jury kept working.

“The fact that they have not said that they’re done is very, very heartening,” he said. “Obviously, they’re working very hard.”

If the jury decides Clancy was criminally responsible for her actions, it could convict her of either murder or manslaughter. If she is acquitted, a judge could still order her confined to a mental health facility if an evaluation determines that she poses a danger to the public.

A developing storm in the Pacific is drawing fresh attention as forecast models suggest it could track unusually close to the California coast — with some projections even raising the possibility of a direct impact.

Tropical Storm Marie is forecast to intensify into a Category 1 hurricane on Wednesday, bringing sustained winds of more than 75 mph.

The system is currently moving along Mexico’s coastline and is expected to approach the Baja California Peninsula, the narrow 775-mile stretch of land that sits just south of California and the US-Mexico border.

The National Hurricane Center has cautioned that Marie is likely to remain at hurricane strength through Sunday as it moves northward along the West Coast.

New spaghetti models, which show a range of possible storm tracks, indicate Marie has a significant chance of curving toward Southern California, potentially putting areas such as Los Angeles or San Diego in the path of landfall.

The National Weather Service has already warned beachgoers in Los Angeles that there is a high risk for large waves and dangerous rip currents throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Coastal flooding is also predicted to be a concern along beaches and shorelines facing the south this weekend.

A Pacific cyclone has never made landfall in California at hurricane strength. The last tropical storm to make landfall was in September 1997 when Nora crossed from Mexico into the US.

Two major forecasting models, the so-called American and European models, both show multiple tracks which could take Marie towards a historic landfall in Southern California.

Meteorologist Levi Cowan aggregated dozens of these potential routes from the National Weather Service’s Global Forecast System and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts to build the latest spaghetti models.

Those models, seen on Cowan’s website Tropical Tidbits, largely agree that the Pacific Cyclone will continue rolling along the Baja Peninsula through the weekend, but its path after that becomes unclear.

Roughly half of the predictions show Marie turning east and spiraling into multiple California cities, including San Diego, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Santa Clara and Santa Barbara.

The other half of the current predictions favor Marie continuing to head straight and remaining in the Pacific until it fades. 

It is important to note that forecast models can shift dramatically once storms form and get closer to making landfall. The farther into the future a forecast model tries to predict, the weaker the certainty of it being correct gets.

Meteorologist Sebastian Westerink from the National Weather Service expressed skepticism that Marie would maintain its strength all the way to California, predicting it would weaken in the colder waters closer to the West Coast.

Westerink told the Los Angeles Times: ‘By the time this storm reaches Southern California, it will very likely be below hurricane status and even tropical storm status.’

A tropical storm has not taken such a path, from the Pacific Ocean straight into the California Coast, in nearly a century, when the Long Beach Tropical Storm landed in 1939.

Meanwhile, hurricanes in California have never been regarded as a real threat due to the California Current bringing much colder water closer to the coast, depriving major storms of the warm ocean water they need for fuel.

At the same time, storms have been regularly blocked from reaching California by prevailing northeast trade winds, which steer eastern Pacific cyclones to the west – towards Hawaii or open water.

Despite their rarity, meteorologists have feared that 2026 could be a historic year for Pacific storms, thanks to the emergence of a potentially record-setting El Niño.

A prominent think tank says it has identified what appears to be a partly submerged Iranian uranium facility inside the Natanz nuclear complex, one of Iran’s most closely watched nuclear sites.

The reported discovery of the covert facility is fueling fresh questions about whether Iran’s nuclear weapons infrastructure was fully eliminated during the two U.S.-Israeli-launched wars against the regime in 2025 and 2026.

The Washington, D.C.-based Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) announced in late August that it had located an underground Iranian site likely connected to uranium enrichment, which could potentially be used in the production of atomic weapons.

In its report, the institute wrote that “The facility does not appear to have been targeted in the military actions of either 2025 or 2026. Since the June 2025 war no vehicle activity has been observed at the facility in available satellite imagery.”

According to the institute, “The Institute has identified a separately enclosed, partially below-ground, bunkered building at the Natanz Nuclear Complex that was likely intended to serve as uranium hexafluoride… storage facility to support large-scale uranium enrichment at the Natanz Fuel Enrichment Plant. The bunkered structure was constructed between 2010 and 2017, with the bulk of construction occurring between 2015 and 2017.”

It further added that “The lesson for today is that any temporary enrichment ban must include a dismantlement and dissolution of remaining capabilities and must not allow for any type of preparatory activity for the end of a ban.”

Uranium is the crucial material to produce atomic weapons. Iran’s regime is vehemently opposed to the Trump administration’s demands that it stop enriching uranium and hand over its already enriched uranium.

According to another report by the Institute for Science and International Security in April,” From December 2024 to June 2025, a half-year period, Iran almost doubled its stock of 60% enriched uranium to 440 kilograms. This action dramatically increased suspicion that Iran was moving toward a decision to build nuclear weapons, significantly shortening timelines to be able to create a nuclear arsenal with up to ten nuclear weapons.”

The U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran’s vast nuclear weapons facility during Operation Midnight Hammer in June 2025 significantly set back Iran’s ability to produce atomic weapons and enrich uranium.

Jason Brodsky, policy director at United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), told News Media that “The report assesses the structure at the Natanz nuclear facility was not targeted during Operations Midnight Hammer and Epic Fury. This raises questions as to why the U.S. and Israel did not target the site. Given that Iran is not allowing IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] inspections of bombed facilities, in contravention of its NPT [Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons]obligations, this will require Washington and Jerusalem to rely on their own intelligence estimates as to this bunkered building.”

Brodsky added, “If it is still intact and can accommodate this kind of enrichment activity, the site should be destroyed in any future strikes. The allowance of such a facility under the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] demonstrates the flaws of the agreement — permitting Iran to retain an industrial scale enrichment program following the sunsets of various provisions — and underscores why zero enrichment in Iran has to continue to be the international demand.”

When asked about the facility and if the IAEA plans to inspect it, Fredrik Dahl, a spokesman for the IAEA, told News Media, that “The building you are referring to is well-known to the Agency as part of the Natanz site that the IAEA regularly inspected prior to mid-2025.”

Asked about the report, Anna Kelly, a White House spokeswoman, told News Media that “First, Iran’s nuclear facilities were totally obliterated during Operation Midnight Hammer. Now, Operation Economic Outcast is severing every remaining economic lifeline sustaining the Islamic Republic of Iran. President Trump has been clear that Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon, and America is entering the endgame with the single greatest financial offensive ever mounted against an adversary.”

Successive U.S. administrations have repeatedly designated the Islamic Republic of Iran since the 1980s as a leading state-sponsor of terrorism.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s announcement last week that the U.S. imposed the economic equivalent of the military campaign that defeated Nazi Germany on the Islamic Republic of Iran could set off a series of events leading to the dissolution of the nearly 47-year-old dictatorship in Tehran, according to experts.

Bessent’s declaration of economic warfare — formally designated Operation Economic Outcast — follows President Trump’s commitment to launch an “economic D-Day” against the clerical regime. The comprehensive U.S. economic pressure point campaign also aims to isolate the regime with respect to its efforts to rebuild its nuclear weapons facility.

Jim Thornton, best known as the announcer on Wheel of Fortune, was suspended Tuesday by Sony Pictures Television Studios.

Sony confirmed the move in a statement to the Daily Mail, saying: ‘We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.’

The studio did not disclose the nature of the allegations or provide further details about the inquiry.

The Daily Mail said it has contacted Thornton for comment, but he has not responded.

TMZ reported that the investigation is connected to a commercial American Airlines flight Thornton took in May, when another passenger allegedly raised a complaint about him with a flight attendant.

The situation was apparently serious enough that the plane’s pilot arranged to have law enforcement waiting for Thornton once he reached the gate. 

Thornton’s attorney told TMZ that the announcer ‘did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested, and has not been charged with any crime.’

‘When questioned about the complaint made by a fellow passenger on the flight, law enforcement spoke to him for five minutes or less, immediately determined that no wrongdoing had occurred and told my client he was free to go.’

Thornton, who was pictured in a photo from the flight while wearing a Wheel of Fortune jacket, was reportedly questioned by the officers before he was allowed to go on his way. 

In a statement to the Daily Mail, American Airlines said: ‘On May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard.’ 

Amid his suspension, Thornton appeared on Tuesday’s pre-taped episode of the show. 

Thornton’s tenure with Wheel of Fortune goes back to 2011, when he replaced former announcer Charlie O’Donnell after his death in November 2010 at 78.

At the time, the long-running game show was hosted by Pat Sajak and Vanna White.

Thornton is rarely seen on the show, but TMZ notes that in 2023 he filled in for Sajak to host a round of the competition because one of the contestants was hoping to meet him.

After Sajak’s retirement, Ryan Seacrest joined White to co-host Wheel of Fortune beginning in September 2024. 

Thornton has previously served – briefly – as an announcer on The Price Is Right in 2004. 

In addition to being the announcer for Wheel of Fortune, Thornton is also a voice actor who has recorded small roles on high-profile Disney-Pixar films including Monsters, Inc. and Wall-E. 

Outside of his work as a live-action announcer, Thornton is best known for appearing on the animated comedy The Cleveland Show and MTV’s Celebrity Deathmatch.

He appeared in the main cast role on the Celebrity Deathmatch revival, which aired for two seasons from 2006 to 2007, after the original cult series was on the air from 1998 to 2002.

Each episode of the stop-motion animation comedy series featured gruesome wrestling matches between celebrities that ended with one of them dying in comically over-the-top manners.

Thornton voiced one of the wrestling announcers and commentators, Jimmy Gomez, which represented his most significant acting work to date.

WASHINGTON — For one Michigan Democrat, the “American dream” may be easier to chase north of the border.

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, previously floated the idea that Americans seeking greater opportunity might have better odds in Canada, suggesting the path to success is more attainable there than in the United States.

Speaking on a May 2023 episode of his podcast, “America Dissected,” El-Sayed questioned the long-standing national promise that the U.S. remains the world’s premier land of opportunity, citing research on economic mobility that he said favors Canada.

He argued that the familiar message — that anyone with ambition and a small start can build a prosperous life in America — overlooks a harsher reality: many people, he said, do not even begin with the resources needed to climb the ladder.

El-Sayed added that economic data indicates people are “twice as likely” to achieve that dream in Canada, while in the U.S., he said, a person’s starting point too often determines where they ultimately end up.

The US currently has a lower unemployment rate, higher gross domestic product per capita, higher median disposable income, and faster economic growth despite having a much larger population than Canada.

In 2024, America’s median household disposable income was $66,155, compared to Canada’s $36,487, according to data from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

El-Sayed recently defended Canada in its trade war with President Trump.

“If you’re starting a trade war with Canada [it] is cause you’re the asshole,” he chided at a press conference this week.

El-Sayed’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
