After 60, maintaining strength isn’t just about growing older; it’s more about how you incorporate movement into your daily routine. I’ve coached folks in their 60s and 70s who outperform many people twenty years their junior, simply because they continuously challenge their bodies. Rather than relying on intricate exercise routines or pricey gym gear, they focus on repetitive actions that help maintain muscle, boost mobility, and keep them ready for day-to-day tasks.
While many assume that aging naturally leads to a loss of strength, the real issue is how often muscles are kept challenged. Exercises that engage multiple muscle groups send a strong message to the body to stay fit, rather than isolated machine exercises. They also enhance balance, coordination, posture, and stamina, gifting a youthful feeling that comes from improved movement.
Having spent years training adults over 60, I’ve noticed one common trait among the strongest individuals: they prioritize movement daily. These five exercises help strengthen the entire body and reinforce skills essential for everyday activities like standing, walking, lifting, pushing, or carrying things. Stick to these, and you’ll gain practical strength comparable to those decades younger.
Sit-to-Stand
If I wanted to judge someone’s lower-body strength in less than a minute, I’d ask them to perform sit-to-stands. Every repetition strengthens the quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, and core while reinforcing one of the most common movements of daily life. I recommend slowing down the lowering phase because controlling your descent builds just as much strength as standing up. Clients who master this exercise often notice climbing stairs, getting out of low chairs, and standing for longer periods become much easier. Few exercises deliver as much functional value with so little equipment.
How to Do It
- Sit near the front of a sturdy chair.
- Place your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Lean your torso forward slightly.
- Press through your heels to stand.
- Lower yourself with control.
- Perform 12 to 15 repetitions.
Resistance Band Rows
Strong posture often separates active older adults from those who struggle with everyday movement. Resistance band rows strengthen the upper back, rear shoulders, and biceps while helping reverse the rounded posture that develops after years of sitting. I include this exercise in nearly every program because pulling strength supports healthier shoulders and better overall movement. Clients frequently tell me they stand taller and experience less neck tension after adding rows to their routine. Strong backs make strong bodies.
How to Do It
- Anchor a resistance band in front of you.
- Hold one handle in each hand.
- Stand tall.
- Pull your elbows backward.
- Squeeze your shoulder blades together.
- Complete 12 to 15 repetitions.
Standing Hip Hinge
One of the most valuable movement patterns you can preserve after 60 involves learning to bend correctly. Standing hip hinges strengthen the glutes, hamstrings, and lower back while teaching your hips to generate movement instead of your spine. I often tell clients this exercise pays dividends every time they pick something up from the floor. As the hips become stronger, everyday lifting feels easier and the lower back experiences far less strain. Proper movement mechanics matter just as much as muscle strength.
How to Do It
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
- Place your hands on your hips.
- Push your hips backward.
- Keep your back flat.
- Return to standing by driving your hips forward.
- Perform 12 repetitions.
Standing Knee Drives
Walking confidently requires much more than strong legs. Standing knee drives strengthen the hip flexors, core, glutes, and supporting leg while improving balance and coordination at the same time. I frequently prescribe this movement because it closely mirrors the mechanics of walking without requiring much space or equipment. Clients often report feeling more stable and energetic after practicing knee drives regularly. Better walking mechanics support nearly every aspect of healthy aging.
How to Do It
- Stand tall.
- Lift one knee toward your chest.
- Pause briefly.
- Lower slowly.
- Alternate sides.
- Continue for 45 to 60 seconds.
Trump Considers Dropping Attorney General Nomination
President Donald Trump has expressed willingness to temporarily withdraw his nominee for attorney general, Todd Blanche, following a lack of support from two Republican senators.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump stated he wouldn’t oppose pulling Blanche’s nomination if outgoing Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina fail to back his confirmation during the Senate Judiciary Committee vote.
Trump further indicated that Blanche’s nomination could be reintroduced for consideration after the midterm elections.
This development comes amidst an ongoing deadlock between Trump and Senators Cornyn and Tillis. Central to their disagreement are issues relating to a tax immunity deal for Trump and his family, alongside a proposed $1.8 billion ‘anti-weaponization fund.’ These contentious points have prompted the senators to withhold their approval until there is official assurance that both the IRS deal and the fund are decisively abandoned. Blanche has acknowledged that formal revisions would be necessary to prevent any future revival of the settlement.
Despite extensive negotiations with the Department of Justice, no resolution has been reached. Cornyn highlighted the stalemate, stating that discussions have made no progress toward reaching the required changes.
That Trump appeared willing to gamble the fate of his attorney general nominee in order to keep alive a sweeping IRS settlement that would shield Trump and his family from tax audits offered a fresh glimpse into the president’s motivations in his second White House term.
Cornyn suggested Thursday the concerns about Blanche’s confirmation are shared by others in the chamber as well, noting on social media that Trump ‘is mistaken if he believes concerns about the provisions in his tax lawsuit settlement are limited to me and Senator Tillis,’ Cornyn said.

The impasse threatens to snarl Blanche’s confirmation hopes for the near-term, leaving Trump without a Senate-confirmed attorney general.
It could also prompt renewed scrutiny of the IRS settlement, barring the requested modifications. Already, the settlement and the so-called anti-weaponization fund had created new fissures within the Republican Party and the Trump administration.
GOP leaders have shown more willingness to buck the President on his legislative priorities, which could complicate things for him in the final months before the midterm elections.
A Senate Judiciary Committee spokesperson conceded that Blanche’s nomination lacked votes to advance from committee, saying that the panel’s chairman, Senator Chuck Grassley, works to ‘set President Trump’s nominees up for success in committee, not failure.’
‘Senators Cornyn and Tillis want written assurances from the Department of Justice regarding the Trump-IRS settlement. Tomorrow’s markup is postponed as work continues to secure sufficient support in committee to favorably report Attorney General-nominee Todd Blanche, who is highly qualified for the job,’ the spokesperson said.
It’s not the only issue that could be a thorn in Blanche’s side in the days or weeks ahead.
Blanche spent his confirmation hearing earlier this month fielding tough questions from Democrats and Republicans alike, who pressed him repeatedly on controversial actions the Justice Department has taken during Trump’s second presidential term.
Lawmakers grilled Blanche about the Justice Department’s botched release of the Epstein files, his personal loyalty to Trump, and concerns about carrying out politically motivated investigations or penalizing career officials who refused to carry out these marching orders.
A spokesperson for the Justice Department said Tuesday that the two sides were in contact.
DOJ ‘provided a written proposal to Senator Cornyn’s staff following ongoing discussion with both the Committee and the Senator’s office,’ adding that they ‘look forward to further discussion around any outstanding concerns.’

A recent legal filing from a former juror in the high-profile Alex Murdaugh murder trial sheds light on ongoing efforts to uncover purported jury tampering allegations from the 2023 proceedings, a development that has captured public attention.
Myra Crosby, who gained attention as the “egg juror,” has submitted paperwork asserting that the public deserves access to the ongoing investigation into Becky Hill. Hill, the former court clerk in Colleton County, South Carolina, is at the center of these serious allegations, according to a report by WCSC, a local news outlet.
Crosby earned her unusual nickname following a memorable moment when she was dismissed from the jury just before deliberations commenced. She made headlines by asking the judge for permission to retrieve a carton of fresh eggs and her purse that were left in the jury room, adding a unique twist to the trial narrative.

That decision ultimately led to Murdaugh’s murder conviction being overturned by South Carolina’s Supreme Court.
The high court ruled the integrity of the jury’s decision was directly impacted by Hill’s actions.

According to WCSC, Crosby filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request in May for the release of records relating to Hill’s jury tampering to be made public.
In response, the attorney general said videos cannot be released right away because they may need parts blurred or removed to protect the jurors’ identities.

Crosby argued those redactions are no longer needed because the jurors already spoke in open court, and some have also appeared in TV interviews and documentaries.
She says even if a few parts need to be hidden, that should not slow down the release of those records.

This oversized prototype played a crucial role in testing Apple’s first iPod while keeping its true design hidden from the public. It was a clever engineering tactic to mask what would eventually become a game-changing product.
Deviating from the sleek and compact design familiar to many, the prototype featured a much larger casing. This allowed Apple employees to experiment with the device in public spaces without giving away the iPod’s final look and feel.
Internally dubbed the Apple P68, the beige-hued prototype remains in excellent condition thanks to Jim Dumont, who played a pivotal role as the fifth engineer enlisted for the original iPod team.
Dumont’s journey with Apple began in 2001 when he joined as a software engineering program manager. His tenure at Apple saw him not only develop the iPod across several generations but also make significant contributions to the creation of the iPhone.
The surviving prototype retains many of the features used during development, including engineering switches, barcode labels, exposed wiring and the oversized casing.
It is accompanied by an archive of Apple development material assembled during Dumont’s time on the iPod team, helping document one of the company’s most closely guarded product launches.

In a bold and unified move, England, along with other UEFA member nations, has announced a boycott of FIFA’s competitions. This reaction comes as a direct response to FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s controversial initiative to offer shares in the World Cup.
Following an emergency virtual meeting on Thursday, UEFA unveiled details of Infantino’s plan to seek £3.1 billion through private investments aimed at bolstering FIFA tournaments.
European football’s leading organization has vocally opposed the proposals introduced by Infantino earlier in the week, marking a significant stance against the FIFA chief’s vision.
In the aftermath of the recent World Cup, Infantino has set a deadline of September 19 for FIFA associations to cast their votes on his proposal, pushing for a swift decision-making process.
However, following Thursday’s intense discussions, UEFA’s Football Associations, including those from England, have expressed their firm resolution to withdraw from FIFA tournaments like the forthcoming Women’s World Cup if the plan is ratified.

Issuing a statement in the wake of the decision, UEFA underscored that the ‘World Cup is not for sale’ and called the secrecy around the plans ‘irresponsible and indefensible’.
‘UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions,’ the statement began. ‘UEFA and its 55 member associations stand as one. We unanimously and unequivocally reject FIFA’s proposal to transfer ownership interests in the World Cup and other FIFA competitions to private investors.
‘The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product. It is one of football’s greatest sporting legacies. It has been built over generations by players, national teams and supporters across every continent. No part of it should ever be surrendered to private investors. The World Cup is not for sale.
‘It is both irresponsible and indefensible that a proposal of such significance for football was conceived in secret and brought to the brink of approval without any meaningful consultation with those entrusted with stewarding the game. This is not merely a profound failure of leadership, but an abdication of FIFA’s duty as the custodian of world football.
‘National associations around the world are now presented with an ultimatum: accept the irreversible capture of football’s greatest competitions or bear the consequences. This is not a ‘democratic decision’, but governance by intimidation – an act of coercion unworthy of an institution entrusted with the stewardship of the global game.
‘But our opposition goes far beyond process.
‘The moment external investors acquire ownership interests in FIFA competitions, football changes forever. Commercial return becomes a permanent obligation. Investor expectations become a daily pressure. From that moment onwards, every decision on the international calendar, every decision on competition formats and every decision shaping the future of football is no longer driven by what best serves the game, but by what best serves shareholders.
‘This model has no place in world football. Football’s future cannot be dictated by the expectations of those whose first duty is to maximise financial return. Nor can the interests of national associations, leagues, clubs, players and supporters become subordinate to investor returns. Football cannot mortgage its future for financial gain.

‘Nobody should be in any doubt: UEFA and its national associations will oppose these plans with absolute determination.
‘There are moments when institutions are judged not by what they are prepared to accept, but by what they refuse to compromise. This is one of those moments.
‘Some things are simply too important to sell. The FIFA World Cup belongs to football. It always will. And so long as Europe has a voice, it will never be for sale.’
On Wednesday, UEFA had accused FIFA of trying to bribe associations into agreeing with the proposals, which could see them receive up to an additional £15m in revenue.
In another blow to the plan, the president of the Asian Federation Sheikh Salman wrote of his ‘great concern and disappointment’ in FIFA’s decision to prepare the plans without consultation.
CONCACAF, which represents 41 countries in North and Central America and the Caribbean, is another federation which has also expressed early skepticism in the wake of the bombshell plans.
Film Legend Suneil Anand Passes Away Following Heart Attack
At 70, Suneil Anand has passed away, leaving a void in the world of Hindi cinema. His niece, Gina Narang, confirmed the heartbreaking news, expressing the family’s deep sorrow: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce Suneil Anand’s passing. The abundance of love and support from all corners has been a source of comfort, and we are sincerely thankful. We request privacy during this challenging time.” Suneil was the son of the iconic Dev Anand, a towering figure in Indian cinema whose illustrious career spanned more than six decades.
Tragically, Suneil succumbed to the same fate as his father in the same hospital following a heart attack in London while en route to India from the United States.
