A dramatic turn in the legal saga unfolded when, on Wednesday, a man faced the consequences of his actions. After deliberately crashing his car into the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters back in January, he received a sentence of six months and one week in jail, specifically for damaging a side-entry door of the prominent establishment.

The man at the center of this incident, 36-year-old Dan Sohail from New Jersey, learned his fate in a Brooklyn federal court. In addition to his prison sentence, he was handed a hefty bill, required to pay $20,000 as restitution. Having already served six months, Sohail is expected to regain his freedom shortly, in roughly a week’s time.

Sohail had been formally accused of deliberately targeting a religious institution, admitting his guilt this past May. His actions placed him in the legal crosshairs under charges that underscored the gravity of such offenses.

Though prosecutors pushed for a longer stint behind bars, recommending a 14-month sentence to send a strong message against rising antisemitic hate incidents, the presiding judge opted for a lighter punishment. Prosecutors had hoped an extended sentence might deter similar future attacks on Jewish establishments, reflecting the ongoing concerns about increasing hate crimes targeting these communities.

On Jan. 28, Sohail repeatedly rammed his vehicle into the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters. He moved protective barriers, gestured for congregants to get out of the way and drove his car into the building’s side entrance five times, knocking the door off its hinges and destroying his car’s front bumper.

While the doors were damaged, no injuries were reported.

Judge Eric N. Vitaliano said he was “somewhat saddened” that the Justice Department wanted him to be influenced at sentencing by the public’s mistaken initial impression that the attack was a hate crime.

Prosecutors said ahead of sentencing that 80 of 146 hate crime incidents across New York City since the start of the year were based on crimes targeting Jewish people and institutions.

But Vitaliano said the government’s push for a stricter sentence as a deterrent to future attacks was in part based on the incident initially being labeled as an “I-hate-the-Jews crime, or, worse, an act-of-terrorism crime.”

The judge cited a psychiatric report and said Sohail’s mental health challenges “played an important role” in his sentencing.

“This is a sad tale,” Vitaliano said.

Sohail’s lawyer, Mia Eisner-Grynberg, said he had been trying to win acceptance at the Jewish institution as he struggled with psychological issues.

Eisner-Grynberg told the judge in court papers before sentencing that Sohail was battling depression and post-traumatic stress disorder after a traumatic childhood when he carried out the attack, even as he “desperately sought belonging and understanding through his exploration of Judaism.”

She said Sohail attended the Chabad he later attacked, finding rabbinical students there “warm and welcoming.”

Sohail “danced with them” and followed their recommendation to visit Israel, but he became erratic and extremely anxious after returning to the U.S., “begging” members of Chabad to help him, Eisner-Grynberg said.

Ramming the car into the building was “an irrational cry for help,” she said.

An ordinary baggage check took a surprising turn at an Alabama airport when TSA officers stumbled upon stolen historical treasures hidden within a passenger’s luggage, causing quite a stir.

These historical items emerged during the screening of a traveler’s checked suitcase at Gulf Shores International Airport (JKA), situated approximately 45 miles from Mobile, Alabama, on July 18.

According to a story on the TSA website, dated July 24, lead TSA officer Justin Dupree identified the artifacts as five cannonballs from the Civil War era.

Dupree, upon examining the bag, noticed a mysterious large opaque image on his X-ray monitor, which initially made him think of a medicine ball.

The discovery revealed five cannonballs, each varying in size, carefully wrapped in paper towels.

The larger ones were “about the size of grapefruits,” Dupree said.

“My first thought was, ‘I couldn’t see a fuse and need to get some help quick,’” Dupree said, according to the TSA.

“I couldn’t see the entire item but was scared I might have been holding a live explosive.”

He quickly alerted his supervisor, Richard Cash, a supervisory TSA officer.

Dupree, who’s been a TSA officer for about four years, said he had “never seen anything quite this unique.”

“I’ve seen inert grenades and training munitions but never an Indiana Jones-esque stolen artifact-type situation,” Dupree said.

Cash analyzed the X-ray image and agreed with Dupree that the cannonballs could pose a danger.

Regional TSA explosives specialists were notified, and local police and deputies with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the airport.

“It was my first time dealing with a potentially live explosive.”

Cash told TSA officials that he “had never seen anything like this.”

“It was my first time dealing with a potentially live explosive, and it’s actually only the second incident we’ve had since JKA opened in May 2025,” he said.

The cannonballs were prohibited from the aircraft because they were classified as artillery munitions, and officers could not immediately determine whether they were inert, Cash said.

“With assistance from the [explosives expert] and law enforcement, and because we were unable to initially determine they were inert, they could have been dangerous to the aircraft,” he said.

Officials later found that the cannonballs had been stolen from Fort Morgan, a historic fort in Gasque, Alabama.

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office told Fox News Digital a juvenile stole them from a storage area within the fort.

The cannonballs “were being transported in the juvenile’s grandmother’s checked bag,” officials said.

“Fort Morgan personnel were able to confirm the items as their property due to paint markings they apply to artifacts,” the office added.

“The grandmother stated that she did not know they were stolen. Fort Morgan’s director chose to not press charges, so there was no further action from us.”

In a statement, TSA Alabama Federal Security Director Tara Corse said she was “very proud of the great catch and teamwork by Officers Dupree and Cash.”

“Even if inert and not active, travelers should avoid bringing weapons of any kind, including replicas, to the airport. They can cause security alerts, flight delays and safety concerns,” said Corse.

In a startling turn of events, a bride-to-be found herself in handcuffs after reportedly igniting a fire in a Mormon church in Utah, using a tampon as the alleged tool, merely a day before her wedding was scheduled to take place.

The woman at the center of this incident, 25-year-old Lenita ‘Tessa’ Joy Moreno from Wyoming, has been accused of setting the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Kaysville ablaze just hours before her nuptials. This act of arson resulted in damages exceeding $108,000, as reported by KUTV News.

Upon investigation, fire experts concluded that the flames were intentionally ignited beneath a chair using unconventional materials, notably, a tampon, which added a bizarre twist to the arson case.

Surveillance cameras in the vicinity momentarily captured Moreno allegedly pilfering two to three lighters from a nearby hardware store, tucking them away in her shirt and shoe before leaving the premises.

According to a probable cause statement provided to KUTV, authorities suspect that Lenita sparked the fire while the church was still occupied by five other individuals, a detail that compounds the gravity of the incident.

‘Lenita did not obtain a marriage license for her own wedding that was to occur the following day after the fire but had lied stating she had.’ 

On Monday, Moreno was arrested and charged with aggravated arson, retail theft and providing false information to a peace officer.

Her arrest came more than two weeks after police and fire crews rushed to the Kaysville Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 198 West Center Street following reports of a fire shortly after 10pm on July 10.

Inside, family members told police they had been setting up for the next day’s ceremony and were preparing to leave when the fire alarm suddenly went off, according to a police booking affidavit obtained by KUTV and KSL News.

They said that after spotting flames in the Relief Society room, one person attempted to douse the blaze with water from wedding decorations while another used a fire extinguisher.

During the initial investigation, authorities determined the fire had been deliberately set beneath a chair that was stacked against the wall. 

‘Under one of the chairs appeared to be items that were out of the ordinary, including what appeared to be a tampon with the applicator on the floor,’ the affidavit read, according to KSL.

The groom told investigators that he and his fiancée had been inside the Relief Society room just minutes before the fire alarm went off. 

Police also noted that the woman initially identified herself as Tessa Moran, but was later confirmed to be Moreno, KSL reports.

‘The cost of building repair to date is just over $108,000,’ the affidavit said.

In the days following the fire, investigators interviewed those who were present at the scene, including the unidentified groom, who said he and Moreno had gone to Ace Hardware and Chevron that night to purchase drinks and decor hooks. 

Employees at Ace Hardware confirmed the visit, and surveillance footage soon showed Moreno walking toward the lighters, secretly snatching an unknown number of them and hiding them on her.

According to the documents, Moreno’s fiancé was not nearby when she allegedly grabbed the lighters. The couple ultimately left Ace Hardware after paying only for the hooks.

During a police interview, Moreno admitted to stealing when confronted about the incident, but refused to tell investigators what specific items she had walked out with, the affidavit said.

When questioned about having a lighter, she allegedly told police she did not carry one and would have no reason to because she does not smoke. 

‘Lenita is from out of state and through the investigation has been found to continually be deceptive and take drastic steps to hide her lies,’ the affidavit said, according to KSL.

The bride-to-be was booked into the Davis County Jail on multiple charges, where she remains held without bail. 

The investigation involved Kaysville police and fire officials, the fire marshal’s office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The Department of Justice revealed that the substantial haul of cocaine was concealed inside the floorboards of a flatbed trailer and commercial truck intercepted at the Calexico Port of Entry, which bridges California and Mexico. Jose Manuel Lopez, 44, a Mexican national and the truck’s sole occupant, was arrested and charged with importing cocaine into the United States.

If convicted, Lopez faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum penalty of life.

In court filings seeking to keep Lopez in custody, prosecutors described the seizure as “a tremendous amount of drugs, even by the standards of this district.”

The only larger cocaine seizure in the Southern District of California this year came in May, when authorities uncovered more than a ton of cocaine worth an estimated $45 million linked to an alleged cross-border drug tunnel.

Officials said the trailer was carrying 269 bundles of rebar when U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, working alongside Homeland Security Investigations and the Drug Enforcement Administration, detected anomalies during an X-ray inspection.

After a narcotics detection dog alerted officers the trailer, they unloaded the rebar and removed the wooden floorboards, where they discovered 366 packages of cocaine weighing more than 1,000 pounds, or approximately 454 kilograms, prosecutors said.

Lopez pleaded not guilty during his initial appearance in federal court Tuesday. A detention hearing is scheduled for Aug. 3.
