A colossal blaze has erupted in close proximity to the top-secret Area 51 base in Nevada, triggering speculation about a possible test of a clandestine weapon.

Known as the Quail Springs Fire, the inferno ignited on Saturday and has since scorched over 4,400 acres of land.

The wildfire is raging in Lincoln County, just south of Rachel, near Bald Mountain on lands designated as the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR).

As of Monday, firefighters have yet to contain any part of the wildfire as it continues to spread through the Nevada Test and Training Range, a military training ground that remains off-limits to civilians.

Officials have attributed the fire’s origin to a lightning strike, but this hasn’t stopped internet users from spinning alternative theories. Comments on a livestream spotlighting the fire near Area 51 are rife with suggestions that a secret weapon test might be behind the blaze.

‘I don’t want to be that guy, but I wonder if they’re testing DEW (Directed Energy Weapons), and this is the result of such,’ one viewer shared, referring to advanced systems that use lasers, high-power microwaves or particle beams to destroy targets.

Another commented, ‘Maybe they tested a new dumb weapon and blew themselves up lol,’ while another suggested the fire was to ‘burn the evidence’ of aliens.

Area 51 has become a cultural phenomenon thanks to decades of conspiracy theories connecting the base to UFOs, aliens and experimental aircraft testing.

Officials noted that no evacuations have been ordered, and no structures are threatened. 

They also said no residences or public spaces are currently threatened.

YouTuber Dreamland Resort captured footage of the fire, showing columns of smoke around Bald Mountain, the highest peak in the Groom Range, located directly inside the restricted military zone of Area 51.

The fire is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense, which is listed as the landowner for Area 51 and surrounding regions. 

‘The Quail Springs Fire experienced moderate growth, primarily due to winds, high temperatures, and low relative humidity,’ according to officials with the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM), one of the agencies working to control the blaze. 

‘Firefighters are utilizing a confine and contain strategy, rather than full suppression.’ 

Twenty-six personnel are currently assigned to the fire under the direction of a Type 3 incident commander. 

Because the blaze is burning inside a restricted military training area, crews are working to contain it rather than attempting a direct attack.

Firefighters are also protecting specific buildings, infrastructure and other assets at risk.

BLM added that firefighters will continue to monitor the blaze as warm, dry weather and afternoon winds persist through Tuesday. 

Fire activity is expected to intensify each afternoon before easing overnight as temperatures fall and humidity rises.

Isolated thunderstorms could also produce sudden, erratic wind gusts that may rapidly spread the flames. No major change in the weather is currently forecast.

Area 51, established in 1955, remained largely unknown until 1989, when Robert Lazar claimed on TV that he worked at a secret site near Groom Lake, ‘S-4,’ studying alien technology and spacecraft.

While the remote US Air Force base in Nevada, approximately 83 miles north-northwest of Las Vegas, has kept a tight lid on its activities, the CIA finally lifted the lid in 2013, officially admitting Area 51’s existence.

The agency declassified a more than 400-page report that detailed how testing its secret spy planes ‘accounted for more than one-half of all UFO reports during the late 1950s and most of the 1960s.’

The U-2 spy and A-12 reconnaissance planes were being flown in the shadows of the desert amid the Cold War, but the extreme altitudes sparked fears of an alien invasion.

‘High-altitude testing of the U-2 soon led to an unexpected side effect, a tremendous increase in reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs),’ the report states.

‘Once U-2s started flying at altitudes above 60,000 feet, air-traffic controllers began receiving increasing numbers of UFO reports.’

However, the CIA report does not mention Area 51’s purpose after 1974.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — On Monday, a section of a vital interstate highway in Oregon was shut down due to an encroaching wildfire, which has led to evacuation directives amid a slew of blazes across the state.

The Oregon Department of Transportation reported that the Fox Fire necessitated the closure of Interstate 84, spanning approximately 70 miles (113 kilometers) between Baker City and Ontario near the Idaho state border. I-84 is a crucial route, linking Portland with eastern Oregon as it stretches through the Columbia River Gorge before heading towards Boise, Idaho.

The western U.S. has faced relentless wildfires this summer season, exacerbated by prolonged dry spells, historically low snowfalls in some regions, intense heat, and unpredictable winds. Tragically, federal officials revealed on Saturday that a fourth firefighter succumbed to injuries sustained when he and his team were caught in a swiftly advancing wildfire near the Colorado-Utah border last month.

The Fox Fire is raging near the Oregon-Idaho border, around 12 miles (19 kilometers) northeast of the small town of Huntington. With a population of 500, Huntington has been ordered to evacuate. The town is close to I-84, and Ontario, which also sits on the state line, lies approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) to the southeast.

Propelled by hot, dry, and windy conditions, the Fox Fire has charred nearly 72 square miles (186 square kilometers) and, as of Monday, had not been contained.

With aircraft potentially grounded due to limited visibility from the smoke, firefighters were building bulldozer lines around Huntington near a railroad that also runs through the area to protect critical infrastructure, authorities said.

The state transportation department warned people on social media to avoid the area, adding that no local detours were available due to other roads also being closed due to fire.

Elsewhere in eastern Oregon, the state transportation department’s website showed a rural stretch of U.S. Route 20 was also closed Monday due to wildfire for nearly 70 miles, between the small cities of Burns and Vale.

In central Oregon, the Akawa Butte Fire was deemed a top priority for firefighting due to its proximity — about 5 miles (8 kilometers) — to Sisters, a small city of about 3,000 people. While authorities said Sunday that fire activity had decreased across much of the fire, part of the town is still under an evacuation notice with residents told to be prepared to leave if necessary.

A tragic incident in Michigan has unfolded as officials identify a couple who, along with their six children, were discovered dead inside their burning home. This heart-wrenching case is being handled as a murder-suicide.

Responding to a house fire in Grand Haven Township on Friday, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office found eight family members—six children and two adults—dead inside the home. Gunshot wounds were present on all victims, escalating the investigation into a suspicious death case.

On Monday, authorities named the deceased adults as Kristopher Karolkiewicz, aged 47, and Amanda Karolkiewicz, aged 39. The children, whose names remain confidential, included four boys, ages 15, 12, 11, and 5, and two 11-year-old girls. Two of the children had been adopted by the couple.

Investigators from the sheriff’s office have indicated that Kristopher Karolkiewicz is suspected of committing the murder-suicide, sparking further inquiry into the events that led to this devastating loss.

Authorities said Karolkiewicz started the fire in numerous places throughout the house after carrying out the murders.

“The cause and origin of the residential fire remains under investigation by Michigan State Police arson investigators. However, preliminary indications are that the fire was intentionally set in numerous places throughout the interior of the residence. The family pets also perished due to the fire/smoke,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

Amanda and her two adopted daughters had returned in mid-July from a vacation in China, where she took them to Shanghai Disneyland, according to her TikTok.

The Grand Haven Fire Department initially responded to reports of people being able to smell smoke in that area between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Friday, but firefighters couldn’t locate a fire.

Amanda’s stepfather, Steve Lawwill, wrote that he was “so grateful for the joy they brought into our life” and that the family is “just so shattered.”

Just before 11:45 a.m., officials returned to the 14900 block of Riverside Trail after receiving reports of white smoke coming from a home there.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said there are no additional suspects.

In a surprising development, Bryan Kohberger, who had previously confessed to the brutal killing of four Idaho college students, is seeking to retract his guilty plea. The convicted murderer now seeks a courtroom trial to contest his guilt.

Now 31, Kohberger is currently serving four consecutive life sentences. He announced his latest legal maneuver during an interview with The New York Times, asserting that he possesses an “absolute claim of innocence.”

“My actual innocence is my truth,” Kohberger declared in the interview, adding that his initial plea was influenced by “false promises and blatant disinformation.” He insisted it “MUST be withdrawn.”

Last July, Kohberger admitted guilt to the November 2022 slayings of University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, both aged 21, along with Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, both 20.

His plea led to a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Though Kohberger admitted responsibility for the killings as part of a plea deal that spared him the death penalty, he has never publicly explained why he targeted the four friends. 

He declined to comment on specifics about the alleged evidence that he says will exonerate him, the Times reported.

He also reportedly refused to talk about the concerns he has surrounding the plea process. 

Mogen, Kernodle, Goncalves and Chapin were found stabbed to death on November 13, 2022, in a rented off-campus house in the small, rural town of Moscow.

Prosecutors say that Kohberger, who was masked, snuck into the home and brutally murdered the students. 

Idaho Attorney General Raul Labrador called Kohberger’s U-turn ‘deeply painful’ for the victims’ families and said he was standing by them.

A spokesperson for the Goncalves family called Kohberger ‘the mosquito you just can’t seem to swat.’

The spokesperson added: ‘(Kohberger) appeared in court for a hearing before a judge, accompanied by his four lawyers. He chose not to leave his fate – or the facts of the case – to a jury.

‘He never cried foul, never claimed he was uninformed or pressured… He admitted his guilt.’ The spokesperson added that they wished Kohberger had been given a death penalty trial and suggested he now wants more attention.  

Kohberger, a graduate student in criminology at nearby Washington State University, was arrested in Pennsylvania, where his parents lived, roughly six weeks later.

A Q-tip from the garbage at his parents’ house and genetic genealogy were used to match Kohberger’s DNA to material recovered from a knife sheath found at the home, investigators said. 

They also used surveillance camera footage to help locate a white sedan that was seen repeatedly driving past the home on the night of the killings.

Cellphone location data also showed that Kohberger had been in the neighborhood multiple times before the attack. 

Kohberger’s attorneys got the trial moved to Boise after expressing concerns that the court wouldn’t be able to find enough unbiased jurors in Moscow.

But Judge Stephen Hippler rejected their efforts to get the death penalty taken off the table and to strike critical evidence – including the DNA – from being admitted in trial.

In exchange for Kohberger admitting guilt and waiving his right to appeal, prosecutors agreed not to seek his execution. Both sides recommended that he serve four consecutive life sentences without parole.

After his arrest in December 2022, Kohberger’s initial court-appointed lawyer said that the murderer was ‘eager to be exonerated.’

The defense spent more than two years challenging the evidence against hi before accepting the surprise plea deal just weeks before he was set to go to trial.

Kohberger acknowledged he committed the ‘willful, unlawful, deliberate’ murder of the victims ‘with premeditation and with malice aforethought’ as part of this agreement. But it didn’t force him to provide a narrative or say why he did it.

It’s unclear why Kohberger killed the four students and spared two roommates who were home at the time.

Investigators also never found a connection between Kohberger, the four victims or the two surviving roommates.

Judge Steven Hippler suggested in court that he too wanted to know why Kohberger did it, but he cautioned against continuing to wonder.

‘By continuing to focus on why, we continue to give Mr Kohberger relevance, we give him agency and we give him power,’ the judge said at the defendant’s sentencing. 

‘The need to know what is inherently not understandable makes us dependent upon the defendant to provide us with a reason, and that gives him the spotlight, the attention and the power he appears to crave.’

On a poignant Monday, Savannah Guthrie issued a direct plea geared towards her mother’s kidnapper, marking over six distressing months since her 84-year-old mother went missing without a trace from her residence in Arizona.

In an emotional plea posted to her Instagram account, Savannah Guthrie appealed directly to whoever is responsible for Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapping, saying that her family is “in agony” and “will never stop looking for her.”

“Today, I speak to you with a clear message,” Savannah voiced with intensity. “It has been an excruciatingly long time since our mother was taken away. Our family endures unending pain, a nightmare from which there is no awakening. Despite our efforts, our situation remains unchanged. Our search and yearning for her are relentless, leaving an unfillable void in our souls. We are reminded daily of life’s harshness and lack of compassion,” she expressed.

With hope, Savannah continued, “I’ve seen your attempts at making things right. I implore, no, I beg you, to choose righteousness now. Guide us to her. Reveal where she can be found. I am convinced it’s never too late to set things right. Let’s bring closure to this ordeal, for everyone’s sakes. Regardless of our past journeys and choices, I believe there’s always a way back. Please, do the right thing.”

In a concerning trend, children are disappearing from major urban areas, with cities in California showing the most significant declines.

A recent analysis by the Wall Street Journal reveals that over the last decade, the number of children residing in cities has decreased by 6% nationwide. This drop reflects a growing movement among families to abandon city life in favor of more affordable and spacious living environments.

San Jose, at the heart of Silicon Valley and known for its exorbitant real estate prices, leads this trend, witnessing a formidable 20% reduction in its under-18 population. This ranks San Jose highest among U.S. cities experiencing such significant declines in youth population.

More strikingly, San Jose has seen a 34% decrease in its population of children under the age of five within the past decade, as highlighted by the report.

Los Angeles also reflects similar shifts, with its population of children under 18 dropping by 16% from 2015 to 2024.

Of the 25 cities that have lost the most children in that time frame, six were in California.

San Diego has lost 14% of its children while Fresno, Sacramento and San Francisco have lost 5%, 4% and 3% respectively, according to the analysis, which examined cities with more than 500,000 residents.

Falling birthrates — a nationwide trend, with the number of births falling by 9% over the past decade — are only one factor driving the disappearance of kids from major cities.

The Covid pandemic accelerated the flight of families choosing to leave cities in search of more space and affordable living, the report noted.

“Families had more exit options and they took them,” Connor O’Brien, a fellow at think tank the Institute for Progress, told the WSJ.

A handful of large cities, particularly in the Sun Belt, have bucked the trend and increased their share of kids.

The number of children in Fort Worth, Texas, and Jacksonville, Fla., increased by 11% over a decade, followed by Washington, D.C. and Seattle, which have each increased their kid populations by 10%.
