Devoted fans of comics, video games, movies, and fantasy genres dedicate months to constructing meticulously detailed costumes that pay homage to their favorite heroes and villains, showcasing a blend of passion and craftsmanship.

Take Sarah Lu, for instance. At 27, having recently relocated to San Diego, she undertook the challenging task of crafting a costume of Toothless, the beloved dragon from DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon.” Starting her project in January, Sarah invested approximately $400 to bring her vision to life.

“For me, cosplay is where theater, music, and dance converge. I harness all these elements to animate a character. There’s something truly magical about that process,” she expressed to Reuters while mingling on the busy convention floor.

Some cosplays capture the hearts of Comic-Con attendees, becoming instant crowd favorites, while others quietly contribute to the vibrant tapestry of the event. Regardless of the attention they receive, each costume adds another layer to the energetic atmosphere of the convention.

San Diego resident Jose Samaniego, 21, said success often comes down to attitude.

“Be confident in yourself,” he said. “If you’re not confident in your own cosplay you’re going to give off a really bad aura and no-one’s going to like you. If you don’t like how you’re dressing, then your outfit’s awful,” he added.

With Comic-Con taking place during the summer, cosplayers in intricate outfits must also contend with the heat.

“‘How do you stay cool?’ Hydrate, hydrate and hydrate,” said David Martinez, 54, a project manager for a pharmaceutical company in San Diego, who attended dressed as a mashup of Spider-Man and the artist Bob Ross.

Despite months of preparation, costumes can malfunction.

Glue can soften in the heat, causing pieces to fall apart, while fabric can rip or tear.

That is where Bryan Mero, a costume repairperson passionate about helping attendees steps in.

Dressed as Fix-it Felix from the Disney animated film “Wreck-it Ralph,” Mero patrols the convention floor carrying a yellow hammer and a backpack filled with repair supplies.

Lu told Reuters that Mero is the real “MVP” of the entire convention.

“I come and bring a supply of anything we need to fix a cosplay; superglue, duct tape, safety pins, bobby pins, hairspray, hair ties, all different colors, all the main colors for that, a soldering iron, a hot glue gun. I know I’m missing quite a few things because my pack is about 15 pounds,” he said.

“That’s kind of what I provide and I do it for free only because I’m just asking to just pay it forward,” Mero added.

Declan Rice needs a rest. The Arsenal and England midfielder played 69 matches for club and country last season. Arteta ran him into the ground – he has previous for this, just ask Bukayo Saka – and, by the end, you could tell.

He played through a hamstring injury from Christmas onwards and was substituted early in England’s victory over Croatia with ‘neural pain’ in his back.

‘The body’s been through a lot this season,’ he said after England’s World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina. ‘I think you can see I’m mentally done, physically done. I need a break now.’

Only, Arsenal’s title defence starts in less than a month. Having Guimaraes will allow Arteta to rest his linchpin.

But that’s only one reason. He’s Rice, and he’s more. In many ways, he’s the complete central player. Over his four and a half years at Newcastle, he ranked in the top five midfielders for both tackles and chances created from open play. Only Rice and Bruno Fernandes have run more miles since Guimaraes joined the Premier League.

His tenacity out of possession will be ideal for Arteta’s intense press. He wins the ball back but then he does something with it.

What has been clear in recent seasons is how over-reliant Arsenal are down the right and, conversely, how under-served they have been at playing through the middle. Saka is the main source of attacking threat while creator-in-chief Martin Odegaard also likes to drift that side.

Guimaraes is the ideal player to fix that. Nine goals for Newcastle last season was as many as Rice and Zubimendi combined, while his five assists match Rice’s figure.

So much of his creativity for Newcastle comes through the middle. As you can see from the chances created maps below, many of Rice’s come tucked into the left channel and frequently not until he gets into the final third.

Guimaraes is more focused in central areas and, quite frequently, from deep.

That could be crucial for Arteta. His ability on the ball from deeper areas will allow Arsenal to be quicker and more direct when they have possession, an aspect of their play Arteta is keen to improve if they are to push on once more.

For too long, they have struggled to break down defences with cutting passes and instead turned back to set-pieces or Saka.

Towards the back end of last season, we saw Arsenal try to implement this more, especially in their Champions League semi-final victory over Atletico Madrid where they used the pace of Viktor Gyokeres to exploit space in behind the defence.

Guimaraes loves a pass from deep to set his team-mates away. Arsenal know that only too well, Guimaraes having sent a defence-splitting ball through to Jacob Murphy to run clear in their clash early in the season.

All of that shows why Arteta wants him, and why he’s so keen to splash the cash on a player that’s not far off 30. Because he can play the Rice role or he can play the Zubimendi (or Myles Lewis-Skelly) one. Rice can sit in, Guimaraes can push on. Or the other way around. He can split defences, he can run at them.

What better way to push on again than by signing a player who can do it all.

David Anthony Burke, known by his stage name D4vd, faces serious charges, including first-degree murder, continuous sexual abuse of a minor under 14, and mutilating human remains, all related to the death of Celeste Rivas Hernandez.

Burke has entered a plea of not guilty against all accusations set forth.

During a session at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles, a text exchange came to light where Celeste posed the question to Burke, ‘What [if] the first abortion didn’t work?’

This conversation occurred in June 2024, as reported by the BBC, at a time when Celeste was just 13 and Burke was 19 years old.

In a separate message sent that month, Burke wrote: ‘Let’s let this abortion be the last one til we have the real one…’

About five months earlier, the musician had apologized to Celeste for ‘putting her through this,’ according to the messages shown in court.

‘Neither of us are capable of watching and taking care of the baby,’ the teen girl replied. ‘It’s for the best no?’

When Burke asked her if ‘it is mine,’ Celeste responded, ‘of course it’s yours David.’

After she asked Burke if anyone knew that they were having sex, he replied, ‘nope and i want to keep it that way until we married.’

Los Angeles Police Detective Corey Farell testified that investigators confirmed the teenager had an abortion in January 2024, according to LAmag.

Data recovered from Burke’s iPhone and presented by prosecutors showed that texts between him and Celeste dated back to August 8, 2022, when she was 11 and he was 17.

Some of the conversations, taken from Burke’s iCloud account, discussed contraception and pregnancy.

Burke’s phone also contained photos of Celeste during the alleged sexual abuse, Farell said on Friday.

Farell testified that Burke’s lock screen featured an image of the two embracing while topless, per the outlet.

He added that investigators had found sexually explicit photographs and videos on the device which prosecutors used to illustrate an alleged sexual relationship between Burke and Celeste.

According to Farell, the footage appeared to have been recorded inside Burke’s bedroom.

The content found on the device allegedly included the teen and the singer naked and in sexual acts, plus close-up photos of their genitals.

This prompted Celeste’s parents to leave the courtroom, with the teen girl’s mother, Mercedes Martinez, sobbing as she left.

Burke was mostly expressionless while Farell testified. He continued staring forward as Celeste’s mom exited, according to LAmag.

The court also heard that Burke and Celeste had discussed a plan for the teen to run away from home and live with the singer around February 2024.

The preliminary trial brief alleged that Burke ‘continued to manipulate’ Celeste into March 2025.

‘All we do is have sex and just hang out man I want more than that for myself,’ she texted him, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors said that texts from April 22 of that year showed how Celeste became jealous over Burke’s relationship with other women, the brief said.

She then ‘threatened to disclose damaging information about her relationship with defendant to end his career and destroy his life,’ the document continued.

Burke was set to release his first studio album and had an ’emerging multi-million-dollar career already in progress’ at stake, prosecutors said. 

He allegedly sent an Uber to take Celeste from her family’s Lake Elsinore home to his rental in the Hollywood Hills the following night around 10.10pm.

The singer allegedly stabbed Celeste to death multiple times and stood by while she bled out, according to the filing.

A resident of Wisconsin faces grave allegations for purportedly attempting to poison her ex-husband. The method? Eye drops surreptitiously added to his beverages.

Jessica Meis, 37, currently sits in the confines of Portage County Jail, detained on a hefty $100,000 bond. She stands charged with aggravated battery intensified by a domestic violence designation, along with two counts related to inserting foreign substances into consumables. According to an in-depth criminal complaint accessed by Law&Crime, Meis’ ex-husband reached out to the Stevens Point Police Department just this Monday, suspicious that Meis may have tried to taint his drink.

The ex-husband relayed to the authorities that since 2021, an array of troubling symptoms had plagued him—constant fatigue, bouts of dizziness, prolonged sleep, and persistent headaches. These baffling symptoms seemed to peak around the period when their divorce was finalized in June 2025. Despite their separation, the former couple continued to share their Stevens Point residence until Meis secured accommodations of her own.

The detailed complaint reveals that Meis reportedly confessed to adding eye drops into her ex-husband’s drinks. Her rationale? Doom has taken over the world on several occasions, and he’s actually proven to be a pretty decent leader at times — until his worst instincts get the better of him. In “Avengers: Emperor Doom,” the Latverian madman uses the Purple Man’s power, meaning people must obey all of his orders, to his own advantage. He has all of the world leaders hand control over to him and achieves global dominance. But over time, he gets bored and doesn’t want to rule anymore.

In 2024’s Marvel Comics “Blood Hunt” event, Doom convinces Doctor Strange to give him the power of the Sorcerer Supreme to save the world from a vampire invasion. Afterward, Doom keeps the powers and rules over Earth once more. Then there was the time in “Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Trial and Triumph” where the two magic users descend into the underworld to rescue Doom’s mother’s soul from the clutches of Mephisto, who’s basically the devil of the Marvel universe. With craftiness and sheer power, Doom bests the devil, proving he’s a force to be reckoned with in any plane of existence.

But Doom isn’t always interested in winning over heroes. When Sue Storm’s about to give birth in 1998’s “Fantastic Four” #54, and with no other options, Doctor Doom delivers her child. He insists on naming her Valeria Richards and appoints himself her godfather. Forging a special connection with the child of your greatest enemies is a good way to psychologically torment them, and it’s proof that Doom is one of Marvel’s greatest haters.

Heartfelt Desperation: Conor Hanlon’s Emotional 911 Call After Discovering Wife Unconscious

James “Conor” Hanlon spent more than six agonizing minutes on a 911 call, desperately seeking assistance for his wife, Brooke Hanlon. This recording, now obtained by Oxygen, captures the urgency and distress of the moment. 

Conor recounted to emergency services that he found Brooke unresponsive on the second floor of their home in Chester on June 6. 

According to a statement from the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, this call prompted a response from EMS and Chester Township Police to the Pottersville Road residence. Tragically, they discovered the 35-year-old deceased, with the Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirming the cause of death as multiple sharp force injuries, labeling the incident a homicide.

What Did Brooke Hanlon’s Husband Conor Hanlon Say In His 911 Call?

The call, filled with Conor’s frantic cries, commenced around 4:30 p.m. as he conveyed his address amidst a palpable sense of urgency.

“Oh my God,” Conor exclaimed in the recording obtained by Oxygen. “I need an ambulance. I need an ambulance.” 

He told the dispatcher that he found his wife unconscious in their home.

“I just found my wife,” a hysterical Conor explained. “I don’t know what’s going on. CPR, I need CPR instruction.”

When the dispatcher asked whether 35-year-old Brooke was still conscious, he replied, “Oh my God, there’s a laceration in her chest!”

“There’s blood,” he added. “I need you here. I need you here immediately.”

After confirming that the paramedics were on their way, the dispatcher asked Conor whether there was a defibrillator in the home and Conor responded that there wasn’t.

“I don’t know what to do,” Conor told him. “What the f–k? What the f–k?” 

The dispatcher began to tell him how to administer CPR as Conor exclaimed, “There’s blood everywhere.”

As the dispatcher continued to count out loud, guiding him through the compressions, Conor exclaimed, “Oh my God” and  “I need you here,” then began to wail and scream.

“Sir, try and take a deep breath, sir,” the dispatcher told him. “Are you still doing the chest compressions?” 

To which Conor replied, “of course,” then started to count out loud again before seemingly turning his attention to his wife, saying, “Oh, baby girl. No!” 

“Brooke, baby,” he told her. “I need you. I need you.”

As the paramedics got closer, Conor told the dispatcher he was on the second floor of the home and that the door was open.

“I got this,” Conor said. “You got it, Brooke. Come on.”

Then, Conor told the dispatcher that Brooke had a cut right below her breast as he asked, “What the f–k happened?” 

The dispatcher continued to guide him through CPR. After the dispatcher told Conor that he was doing a great job, Conor replied, “I’m not” and began to cry and scream.

The call ended with the paramedics arriving at the scene and Conor telling them, “I found her.”

Has There Been Any Arrests in Brooke Hanlon’s Death?

Just minutes after arriving at the scene, an officer deemed the scene “suspicious,” and the major crimes team was called in to investigate, according to audio obtained by People,

The investigation remains ongoing and no arrests or suspects have been announced. 

Conor has reportedly retained an attorney and has been communicating with authorities, according to Fox News.

A spokesperson for the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed to Oxygen July 23 that there were no new updates on the case.

Australia’s superannuation funds have celebrated another banner year for earnings, but financial specialists caution that these levels of returns may not be sustainable going forward.

The Australian labor market continues to outperform expectations, intensifying speculation that the Reserve Bank may resort to further interest rate hikes. Meanwhile, avocado enthusiasts can take comfort in projected persistently low prices.

Don’t expect another super year like this

Though Australia’s superannuation funds have repeatedly impressed with their performance, experts advise caution, reminding investors that such high returns are not guaranteed annually.

New data from superannuation research firm Chant West shows the median growth fund returned 9.5 per cent over the past financial year, marking four consecutive years of returns above 9 per cent.

Chant West head of superannuation investment Mano Mohankumar told the SBS On the Money podcast that while recent performance has been strong, it’s unlikely to continue indefinitely.

Strong international sharemarket gains helped drive returns, with global shares rising more than 25 per cent over the year. Australian shares also posted solid gains of around 6 per cent.

One of the few weaker spots was Australian listed property, which comes as new figures from Domain showed national median house and unit prices recorded their first quarterly decline in more than three years.

Australia’s jobs market remains a sticking point for the Reserve Bank

The chance of another interest rate rise increased this week after stronger-than-expected employment figures.

More than 76,000 jobs were created last month, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.4 per cent because more Australians entered the workforce, pushing the participation rate to a one-year high of 67 per cent.

The participation rate measures the share of working-age Australians who are either employed or actively looking for work. Economists say the increase could reflect ongoing demand for workers or more people seeking employment as cost of living pressures persist.

Citi Australia senior economist Faraz Syed told the SBS On the Money podcast the key concern for the Reserve Bank is whether a tight labour market starts driving wages significantly higher.

The next official inflation figures will be released on Wednesday, ahead of the Reserve Bank’s next board meeting on 10 August.

Good news for avocado lovers

If you’ve noticed cheaper avocados at the supermarket, that trend looks set to continue.

New research from Rabobank found Australian avocado production has rebounded strongly, with both supply and exports expected to reach record highs.

The increase has been driven by expanding orchards and improving yields as newer plantings mature.

While that’s welcome news for growers exporting to markets including Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, it’s also good news for Australian shoppers, with abundant supply expected to keep retail avocado prices relatively low compared with historical standards.

Will This African Nation Become the Next Focus in Counterterrorism Efforts?

The United States is weighing the option of launching airstrikes against terrorists linked to al Qaeda in Mali, as suggested by regional experts and recent media insights.

Since a series of coups in 2020 and 2021, a military junta has taken control of Mali, a nation in the Sahel region of West Africa. Seeking new alliances, the junta distanced itself from Western nations like France and the U.S., opting instead for military backing from Russia and its Africa Corps mercenaries in their battle against jihadist factions.

Among these insurgent groups, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) stands out as a significant threat, currently laying siege to Mali’s capital. The group, in collaboration with another faction, has been implicated in the deaths of 50 Malian soldiers this month alone and the killing of the country’s defense minister earlier this year. Notably, they have forced Russian battalions to withdraw on at least two separate occasions this year.

JNIM harbors ambitions of transforming Mali into an Islamist Jihadist state, which, if realized, would mark it as the first nation in the world under jihadist regime control. The group was officially labeled a Foreign Terrorist Organization in 2018 during the initial Trump administration.

Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist groups are also operating freely in Mali, and are linked to terror groups in neighboring Nigeria.

A State Department official didn’t respond to a Washington Post report that the U.S. is considering strikes against JNIM in Mali, but used strong language Thursday when talking to News Media, leading analysts to suggest the time for talking may be over.

“The United States unequivocally condemns the terrorist activity in Mali,” the official said, adding, “in the Sahel, the United States is committed to promoting regional ownership and cooperation against terrorist threats, and monitoring indicators and warnings of threats to our homeland.”

Edmund Fitton-Brown, a former British and United Nations diplomat, said the U.S. could order military action, to primarily try and stop jihadists becoming entrenched in Mali. Fitton-Brown, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told News Media, “Mali is mainly important to the U.S. because, as a failed state becoming a safe haven for al Qaeda and ISIS, it looks like the first of several African dominoes likely to fall.”

Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Kenneth P. Ekman, who until last year, served as the Department of War’s West Africa Coordination Element lead, said that with strike action the administration may be able to persuade Mali’s rulers to turn away from Russia, and towards the U.S. for protection – and purchases of military equipment.

Ekman told News Media, “JNIM has a stranglehold on the government and much of the population. The Russians are woefully ineffective and extractive. Cooperation with U.S. forces offers a disproportionate and positive impact.”

Ekman said that U.S. forces have supported partner-led operations against JNIM before, as recently as 2022, adding “⁠recent proposals amount to returning to similar cooperation against a mutual threat.”

The administration may also be in a minerals frame of mind. Mali is one of Africa’s largest gold-producing nations. It also has substantial deposits of lithium, used extensively in rechargeable batteries.

Fitton-Brown said that “President Trump may be less reluctant than his predecessor to work with the juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, if they are losing faith in their Russian friends.”

He continued, “The U.S. is certainly a more capable partner. France has already been displaced, so all three countries might accept U.S. help if it comes only with strings attached that don’t offend or disadvantage them. Whether even the U.S. is capable of stopping the political decline of these countries, and the rise of militant Islam, is another matter. That cannot be achieved by military force alone.”

The FDD’s Fitton-Brown said U.S. assets such as aircraft may not be directly involved if there is a strike, “The U.S. might work with French and other intelligence services to develop local intelligence for strikes on JNIM leadership, but this is unlikely to achieve much. The organization is resilient and will be able to replace those killed.”

A former senior Department of War official told News Media the U.S. has at its disposal cruise missiles and long-range bombers. Attack drones would probably not come into play, and the U.S. Naval Institute’s Fleet Tracker shows no American aircraft carriers anywhere near African waters, effectively ruling out carrier operations.

However, Ekman believes airstrikes are under consideration, noting “JNIM and ISIS are a threat to U.S. interests, and are ascendant in West Africa.”
