Volodymyr Zelenskyy Faces Internal Challenges After Years of Conflict

0

In the aftermath of Russia’s extensive military aggression against Ukraine, now spanning nearly four and a half years, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy encounters a significant political hurdle on the home front.

This past week, Kyiv witnessed unprecedented demonstrations under Zelenskyy’s leadership, as public discontent over strategies to counter their eastern adversary erupted into the open. Thousands of young Ukrainians flooded the streets, voicing their outrage over controversial military recruitment practices and the administration’s alleged corruption.

In response to these mounting protests, Zelenskyy took decisive action on Wednesday, relieving army chief Oleksandr Syrsky of his duties. Syrsky, a seasoned commander aged 60, had become a lightning rod for protest since the dismissal of a younger, reform-oriented defence minister.

The dismissed minister, 35-year-old Mykhailo Fedorov, was ousted by Zelenskyy a mere six months into the role. Reports suggest that Syrsky may have influenced Zelenskyy’s decision to remove the tech-savvy youth, only to be replaced himself by Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new military head.

These leadership changes hint at potential instability within Zelenskyy’s administration, particularly following the recent dismissal of former Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko earlier this month.

Ukrainian opposition MP Oleksiy Goncharenko told the SBS World News Weekly podcast that Zelenskyy’s position is “very weakened” amid ongoing corruption scandals, and the rotation of political appointments suggests Zelenskyy is trying to shore up his position.

However, Iryna Skubii, senior researcher in Ukrainian studies at the University of Melbourne, told SBS News that what may appear to be a crisis from the outside reflects “how democracy works” in Ukraine.

“It’s how civil society illustrates what they want from political leadership at this time, and political leadership listened to them and made this decision accordingly,” she said.

Protesters wave signs and Ukrainian flags in a town square.

Ukraine has been subject to Russian aggression since the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. The conflict escalated when Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Skubii said Ukrainians are understandably tired but remain resolute in their rejection of Russian domination.

Peter Tesch, a former Australian ambassador to Russia, told SBS News that the divide between Syrsky and Fedorov — who is reportedly being considered for another position in Zelenskyy’s government — is one between the old guard and the new. The latter’s ideas about pursuing the conflict with drones and other technological capabilities, as opposed to sending more people into battle, resonate with Ukrainians, hence their jumping to his defence.

“It’s a very significant and potentially high-risk political situation for President Zelenskyy,” he said, although the removal of both men “has probably cauterised some of the political risk”.

Russia, which “is counting on” being able to outlast Ukraine in a war of attrition, will attempt to capitalise on political infighting, Tesch said, and any perceived reluctance to pursue the war will encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin that his grind-them-down approach will eventually succeed.

“It’s a dangerous inflection point,” he added.

Russia has been escalating aerial strikes in recent months and the United Nations has reported a surge in civilian deaths in Ukraine.

However, Ukraine has also upped its use of long-range drones to hit fuel infrastructure in Moscow, and has signed a recent anti-ballistic missile pact with European nations which will make it a key part of a new continental air-defence system.

Retired Australian Army Major General Mick Ryan, senior military studies fellow at the Lowy Institute, told SBS News that such political “crises” are nothing new in Ukraine and that, while it has been a “serious civil-military relationship crisis”, it is not a “dire” one when it comes to Ukraine’s military outlook.

“A certain amount of tension between soldiers and politicians, when you’re under the kind of stress the Ukrainians have been under for four and a half years, is totally normal in any country,” he said.

A large fire above a shopping centre.

Still, Ukraine has been unable to hold democratic elections since 2019, and Tesch notes that the “issues” of Zelenskyy’s democratic legitimacy and national cohesion are ones he will have to continue to navigate as the war drags on.

The recent political flare-up, he argues, is “itself a sign of a healthy democracy” and one that disproves “Kremlin propaganda” questioning Zelenskyy’s legitimacy.

For Ryan, none of the recent drama changes the fundamentals. Zelenskyy is stuck between somewhat lacklustre Europe, an indifferent United States, and a Russian leader who is now locked in an existential battle and “does not appear willing to negotiate under any circumstances”.

“We need to temper our expectations for the new Ukrainian military leadership team,” he said.

On the ground, Goncharenko said the front line in the occupied territories has now been “a stalemate” for almost three years.

Along with Crimea, Russia now illegally occupies some 20 per cent of Ukrainian territory, including parts of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Luhansk, but neither side has been able to shift the balance decisively.

“There are no big changes, just thousands and thousands of people are dying,” he said. “This war should be stopped right now … but unfortunately the war continues,” Goncharenko said.

Australians, Tesch argues, have a clear stake in continuing to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia as the conflict, at its core, is over “whether international law has any meaning.”

“Anything which points to the lack of collective Western resolve to stand up for international law and to ensure that might does not make right is bad for Australia’s strategic interests regionally and globally,” he said.

“I’m pleased that successive Australian governments have stayed the course with Ukraine.”

Skubii, who has written that the world “has stopped seeing Ukraine” and now just accepts the grim, continued loss of life, said only substantial economic and sustained military pressure will force Russia to accept defeat. Until that point, while Ukrainians are tired and fearful of a fifth winter with intermittent heating, they have also learned to live with the war.

“It’s really very, very, very hard,” she said. “But, you know, children go to school, people continue to go to parties, weddings.

“Life is still going on.”

Tom Schwartz Shuts Down “Unrecognizable” Comments with Empowering Response at Age 43

Tom Schwartz is determined to set the record straight.

The former Vanderpump Rules star pushed back against a tabloid that featured a paparazzi snapshot of him taken in Los Angeles, captioned with the statement: “Tom Schwartz is unrecognizable as he surfaces downcast at 43.”

The article, dated July 22, remarked on the absence of Schwartz’s usual cheerful demeanor. It also noted the temporary closure of Hollywood bar Schwartz & Sandy’s, which Schwartz co-owns with Tom Sandoval, while pointing out that Schwartz’s ex-wife Katie Maloney‘s L.A. sandwich shop is still operating.

Schwartz was less than thrilled with this portrayal. On July 23, he took to Instagram Stories to lightheartedly address the piece, posting a screenshot alongside the quip, “You better sleep with one eye open @DailyMail,” accompanied by a crying emoji.

His girlfriend Kiana Carroll also supported him, sharing a lighthearted Boomerang video of Schwartz relaxing by a pool, captioning it, “It was a bad angle guys.”

And while the friendship between Schwartz and Sandoval, 43, did hit a rough patch during the final days of Schwartz & Sandy’s—which were preceded by the infamous Scandoval cheating controversy and a complete VPR cast overhaul—it’s all water under the bridge for the Valley star.

Jon Bon Jovi Shocks Fans with Sudden MSG Show Cancellation

In an unexpected turn of events, Jon Bon Jovi had to cut his performance short at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night due to difficulties getting through his set.

The legendary rocker, who is 64, was delivering the eighth of a planned nine-show residency at the iconic New York City venue. As part of his Forever Tour, he began the evening with the crowd favorite from 1986, “Livin’ on a Prayer,” but soon announced he needed to halt the concert.

An audience member recounted to Page Six that Bon Jovi apologized to fans, saying, “I’m sorry, I’m hurt and you’re not getting the best of me.”

He urged the concertgoers to retain their ticket stubs, reassuring them with, “Don’t throw away your ticket stubs, I’m gonna figure something out, OK? Just hold onto it, we’ll figure out how to reschedule.”

Before leaving the stage, Bon Jovi added, “But I’m gonna have to cool it for the night. I feel great,” underscoring the need to pause the show to protect his health.

Representatives for the “It’s My Life” singer told Page Six in a statement, “The Bon Jovi concert at Madison Square Garden ended after 90 mins tonight.”

“Jon Bon Jovi spoke from stage and told fans he has been battling a sinus infection which led to the show’s early ending,” it continued. “As part of the Bon Jovi residency at Madison Square Garden, Jon has said numerous times that it has been a joy to return to live shows for the band.”

The statement concluded, “Updated information will be available shortly.”

The Forever Tour marks the band’s first tour since its frontman underwent vocal cord surgery in 2022.

“There is a lot of joy in this announcement — joy that we can share these nights together with our amazing fans and joy that the band can be together,” Bon Jovi said in a statement unveiling the tour.

“I am lucky enough to be able to hold a light out to the audience each night and stand in their reflection for a tremendous collective experience — I get to stand in the WE of our concerts,” he added.

In 2024, he told the Sunday Times he might never sing live again following his vocal cord surgery if he can’t sing at the level he’s accustomed to, telling the outlet, “If the singing is not great, if I can’t be the guy I once was … then I’m done.”

But last month, he told People he was “fully recovered.”

“It was longer than I’d ever expected, but it had to be right. We never lost faith,” he told the mag.

The father of four said his health crisis taught him how to live in the moment.

“I used to always have my nose to the grindstone, always put my head down, thinking of tomorrow, never living in the today,” he explained. “This forced me to not only live in the today but be appreciative for every today that’s still here.”

MEMORISE: Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. – Psalm 100:2 (KJV)

READ: Luke 17:12-19 (KJV)

12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:

13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.

15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,

16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?

18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.

19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Isaiah 35-37

Open Heaven 24 July 2026 MESSAGE

Yesterday, I discussed how a fellow who has been delivered must praise God to sustain his or her freedom. Today, I will discuss thanksgiving, perpetual worship, and genuine service to the Lord as steps a person must also take to maintain his or her freedom.

In today’s Bible reading, ten lepers cried unto Jesus for mercy, and He told them to go and show themselves to the priests. As they went, they discovered that they were healed, but only one of them returned to say “Thank you” to Jesus. He returned praising and glorifying God with a loud voice. He was not shy about giving thanks to God, and Jesus gave him an extra miracle; He made him whole. An African adage says that a child who is grateful for a gift he or she receives today will definitely receive more gifts in the future. When you give thanks to the Almighty God for what He has done for you, beyond retaining what He has given you, you will also position yourself to receive more from Him.

Worshipping God perpetually is another step to sustaining deliverance and freedom. In 2 Kings 5:1-17, God delivered Naaman from the yoke of leprosy. After his deliverance, Naaman made up his mind that he would only worship the Almighty God for the rest of his life, and I am sure that his deliverance remained permanent. You must also make up your mind that you will spend your life worshipping God and Him alone. You should also have a place where you can meet with God to worship Him regularly, regardless of its size or unconventional nature. I remember a time when the only place I could worship God without disturbance was in my bathroom. You should also ensure that your heart is always prepared to worship Him at all times.

Another key to sustaining deliverance and freedom is to serve God genuinely and wholeheartedly. When the Lord takes away a fellow’s burdens, the fellow should serve Him with his or her whole heart and be committed in the place of service. In Mark 5:1-20, after Jesus had delivered the mad man of Gadara, He told him to go about preaching the gospel to his friends. When you submit yourself as a tool in the hands of God to expand His kingdom, the devil cannot possess you again. I pray that as you thank the Almighty generously, worship Him perpetually, and serve Him wholeheartedly, He will preserve your victories and increase His blessings in your life, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven 24 July 2026 PRAYER POINT

Father, please help me to cultivate a heart that thanks You generously, worships You perpetually, and serves You wholeheartedly all the days of my life.

Open Heaven 24 July 2026 HYMN 7 – I Am Thine O Lord

1 l am Thine, O Lord
I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.

Chorus:
Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died.
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer bless Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

2 Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the power of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.

3 Oh the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee,
my God
I commune as friend with friend!

4 There are depths of love
that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy
that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.

Black Bear Strolls into California Water District Office, Captured on Video

0

In a surprising midweek encounter, a black bear made its way into a Southern California water district office on Wednesday. The curious bear managed to push open the front door, roamed around briefly, and then returned to the nearby forest.

This unusual visit was caught on surveillance cameras at the Crestline Village Water District, located in the San Bernardino Mountains. The footage shows the small black bear entering the office in the afternoon, with employees witnessing the unexpected guest’s short stay.

The bear took its time exploring, sniffing around the premises before heading back to the entrance. Demonstrating an impressive level of independence, it opened the door once more to exit the building without assistance.

“It was an exhilarating experience to see a bear up close,” remarked Josselyn Brian, an employee of Crestline Village Water District, to KTLA. She added, “Thankfully, no one was in harm’s way. We didn’t have any customers inside, just staff, making it a thrilling yet safe encounter.”

Employees also told the outlet they watched as the bear wandered back into the woods after leaving the office. No injuries were reported, and the animal did not appear to damage the building.

The encounter is the latest unusual bear incident to capture attention this week.

Earlier this week, a bear in rural New Mexico climbed to the top of a utility pole near Gladstone, about 170 miles east of Santa Fe, in an encounter that was captured on video and later shared by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

“We appreciate the enthusiasm for American Energy Dominance, but this isn’t what we meant,” the department joked in a social media post accompanying the footage.

The video, verified by Storyful, also included audio from a 911 caller reporting the unusual sight.

“I’m calling to report a bear on top of a light pole,” the caller told a dispatcher.

The dispatcher said wildlife officials had already been notified but could not safely tranquilize the animal while it remained atop the pole because it could fall.

The bear later died after being electrocuted before wildlife officials could safely rescue it, the New York Post reported.

Wildlife experts say black bears are strong climbers and may scale trees, utility poles or other tall structures when startled by people, traffic or dogs.

In mountain communities like Crestline, where bears regularly roam neighborhoods in search of food, encounters with people are not uncommon, though one wandering into an office building is considerably more unusual.

Fierce Storm Unleashes 2,000 Lightning Strikes, Ignites 35 Wildfires Across Central Oregon in Hours

0

In Central Oregon, the air was thick with ash as emergency sirens resonated across the landscape. This followed a ferocious lightning assault that violently struck the area, sparking no fewer than 35 wildfires within mere hours.

A fierce thunderstorm discharged nearly 2,000 lightning bolts by the evening hours on Wednesday. These strikes battered forests, rangelands, and individual trees, stretching firefighter resources to their limit in the face of multiple emergent fires, as highlighted by Central Oregon Fire Information.

Although some sections of the region experienced intense rain showers, these downpours were far too scattered to curb the overwhelming spread of fires triggered by the relentless lightning activity.

Fire officials issued warnings about the likelihood of additional fires cropping up in the near future. This stems from the fact that trees and vegetation struck by lightning might smolder inconspicuously before bursting into flames.

Among the initial serious incidents was a wildfire igniting approximately three miles northeast of Terrebonne, situated on the north side of the Crooked River and east of Smith Rock State Park.

The fire was mapped at 19.4 acres before firefighters stopped its forward spread.

The Dickerson Fire, about 6 miles southwest of Brothers, grew beyond its initial estimates before crews fully contained it.

The biggest threat remains the wind-driven Akawa Butte Fire, which had exploded to 26,144 acres and triggered Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation orders near Sisters.

The newly reported Ten Mile Fire near Madras had also grown to roughly 800 acres as firefighters continue battling flames across the region.

Officials say the danger is far from over.

The storm followed another lightning event last week that produced holdover fires, blazes that can smolder unnoticed for days before suddenly flaring to life.

Frightened Bear’s Desperate 35-Foot Climb Ends in Tragic Incident

0

In a truly tragic scene, a bear was seen desperately clinging to the summit of a towering 35-foot telephone pole, only to face electrocution moments later.

A passing motorist made the startling discovery near Clayton, New Mexico, casting a somber tone over an otherwise ordinary drive.

Captured on video, the bear could be seen struggling for balance on the narrow crossarm of the pole, visibly panting as it fought to maintain its precarious position.

‘We couldn’t believe our eyes at first; we had to turn back to really understand what was happening,’ Shannon Mullens shared with Storyful, a social media content agency.

‘Initially, we assumed the bear might have been lifeless, but as we drew closer, it became clear that the bear was still alive.’

During a frantic 911 call captured in the video, taken on Monday, an operator told the concerned witness to ‘just leave it be.’

‘I’ve already called Game and Fish, and they said there’s nothing that they can do,’ the operator explained. ‘They could go and shoot it and tranquilize it to get it down, but if they do that, then it’s gonna fall and hurt itself.’

The ordeal ultimately ended in horror when the bear was electrocuted before officials could rescue it.

Wildlife specialists explained that frightened bears, particularly younger animals, may instinctively climb utility poles for safety after being startled by vehicles, humans or dogs.

Another witness who filmed the incident and contacted authorities later claimed the animal was electrocuted after officials ‘refused to come out.’

Advocacy group World Animal News criticized the response, arguing that officials should have made greater efforts to rescue the bear.

‘The heartbreaking incident has renewed discussion about how wildlife emergencies involving animals in immediate, life-threatening situations should be handled,’ the agency said.

‘Every wildlife emergency deserves prompt attention, careful assessment, and, whenever possible, every reasonable effort to help animals in distress and give them the best possible chance of survival.

‘May this precious soul rest in peace. We must do better for wildlife in crisis.’

In a statement to Storyful, a spokesman for the New Mexico Department of Wildlife suggested the animal’s death was caused by members of the public who had stopped ‘to film and take pictures of the bear.’

‘The reporting party was instructed to leave the bear alone so it could come down on its own and local dispatch was asked to instruct concerned citizens to leave the bear alone; however, some members of the public continued to stop next to the power pole to film and take pictures of the bear, so the bear remained at the top of the pole,’ the representative wrote.

‘A Union County sheriff’s deputy, the power company and Department conservation officers were notified. Unfortunately, the bear sustained fatal injuries before they arrived,’ the spokesman added.

A similar incident happened last year in Arizona, when another bear had climbed atop a telephone pole.

Werner J Neubauer, a lineman, was called to the scene in Cochise County and quickly went to work de-energizing the equipment and deployed a fiberglass stick to get the animal to climb down.

The bear initially refused to budge but eventually climbed safely back to the ground.

Rhapsody Of Realities 24 July 2026: Built For Success By The Word

Rhapsody Of Realities 24 July 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): Built For Success By The Word

TOPIC: Built For Success By The Word (Rhapsody of Realities 24 July 2026)

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee – Isaiah 26:3

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

Very early in my life, the Lord set me on course for a life of ever-increasing success and impact. I got acquainted with the Word of God very early in life and I’m forever grateful to the Lord for that. I was born again before I was nine years old and began to preach the Gospel not long after. I started winning my friends to Christ, and shortly after, I began a fellowship. By fifteen, I was already holding crusades. From then on, the journey has been from glory to glory.

When God sets you on course and your mind is stayed on Him, the Word declares that He will keep you in perfect peace because you trust in Him. That peace is the peace of prosperity, a life that continually moves forward.

Psalm 1:3 describes this life clearly: “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” This is the result when you give attention to the Word, to shape your life. The result is extraordinary. You’re like a tree planted by the rivers of water, bearing fruit in season. There’s no failure in your life.

I love the way the AMPC describes it in Joshua 1:8: “This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall deal wisely and have good success.” When you give yourself to the Word, you deal wisely and have good success.

What a life; a life built only for success. It’s the result of meditating on the Word; the Word reproduces itself in you. The Word of God is seed. Meditation keeps it rooted in your spirit such that it governs your mentality to only walk and talk the Word. Your life becomes the demonstration of the Word. Hallelujah.

PRAYER

Dear Father, I thank you for the power and efficacy of your Word in my life. My mind is stayed on you, and I walk in perfect peace and unending prosperity. I give myself wholly to your Word, meditating on it day and night, and it produces in me a life of continuous success and fruitfulness. My life is the expression of your Word, and I walk in victory always, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Philippines’ Replica of the Virgin Mary’s House Attracts Catholic Devotees Nationwide

ALFONSO – Perched on the historic grounds of Ephesus, Turkey, stands the revered House of the Virgin Mary, a sacred sanctuary believed to be where Jesus’ mother spent her twilight years. Thousands of miles away in the Philippines, Asia’s largest Catholic nation has warmly embraced a faithful replica of this hallowed site, drawing devotees to a serene field near Manila.

“The concept was born out of the need for a sanctuary,” explained Dennis Paez, the priest spearheading this heartfelt project. “Here, everyone is welcome without any questions asked.”

Unveiled in 2024, this meticulous replica stands in Alfonso, a quaint town in Cavite province roughly 70 kilometers (approximately 45 miles) south of bustling Manila. Since its grand opening, the site has been a spiritual hub, hosting Catholic pilgrimages and notable events like the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, celebrated with fervor in July. Painstakingly crafted, the 67-square-meter (720-square-foot) building mirrors the dimensions and aesthetics of every stone of its ancestral counterpart.

Catholic lore holds that Mary found solace in the house of Ephesus following the crucifixion of Jesus, residing there under the care of the apostle John to evade persecution in Jerusalem, until her assumption into heaven.

According to Paez, the replica’s construction spanned about 10 months, uniting workers from diverse religious backgrounds, which he sees as a testament to the Virgin Mary’s power to bring all her children together in harmony.

“The apostolate of this place is to accept people with unconditional positive regard,” added Paez, who is also a psychologist specializing in supporting youth. “There is no therapy here. The therapist is our Mother.”

Marian devotion shapes Filipino faith

In the country of about 113 million people, nearly 80% identify as Catholic.

Philippine faithful often refer to the Virgin Mary as the Blessed Mother. Processions honoring her are held regularly throughout the country.

“We are a long-suffering people,” Paez said. “Our wealth is really our faith and our faith is such like that because of the Blessed Mother.”

Religious historian Michael Delos Reyes said that Filipino devotion to the Virgin Mary dates back to the time Spanish colonizers introduced Christianity in the 16th century. However, that devotion has also found expression in more recent moments of the country’s history.

Delos Reyes said that some attributed the 1986 People Power Revolution that led to the ouster of then-President Ferdinand Marcos to the Virgin’s intercession. And in 2013, when the Typhoon Haiyan ravaged Tacloban, devotees looked to the Blessed Mother for hope.

Filipinos turn to Mary for comfort

“To Jesus through Mary” is a phrase that reflects the central place Mary holds in Filipino Catholic life.

“Her maternal dimension is what Filipinos find meaningful, as well as her power to intercede on believers’ behalf,” said Deirdre de la Cruz, a professor of history and Southeast Asian studies at the University of Michigan.

Marian iconography and rosaries frequently adorn Filipino cars, public transportation, individual altars and shrines both in urban and rural landscapes, De la Cruz added.

“As someone who is known to provide comfort, Mary is a very familiar figure and someone to whom one can appeal in difficult times,” she said.

Daphne Oseña Paez, who recently visited the replica, said that despite being raised Catholic her devotion was not as strong as it became in adulthood. It began with a trip to Mexico, where she saw the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and it deepened years later after enduring a difficult pregnancy that made her seek refuge in her faith.

“We don’t pray to Mary herself, but Mary intercedes for us,” Oseña Paez said. “In my times of trouble, and I’ve had a lot, I really clung on to the love and comfort of her as a mother.”

A pilgrimage closer to home

Donated Marian icons line the walls inside the replica. At the center stands a statue of Mary modeled after the one in Turkey, alongside a relic said to be from her veil.

Most of the displayed images were donated by art collector and Philippine culture advocate Maritess Pineda. She said her devotion to Mary led her to start a collection that has finally found a home.

Other Filipinos felt drawn to contribute in their own way. Rupert Suarez and his wife had visited the House of the Virgin Mary in Ephesus years earlier. When he learned about plans to build a replica in the Philippines, he joined the the project.

“I usually pray to the Mother,” Suarez said. “It’s so very blessed that we already have this replica built.”

The site has received little public promotion since its inauguration. Yet Father Paez said pilgrims have visited.

“I don’t at all think that it is me bringing them,” Paez said. “It’s The Blessed Mother asking them, inviting them to come.”

In Wisconsin, a woman faces accusations of disorderly conduct following claims from her uncle that she reacted inappropriately after his mother’s passing.

Forty-seven-year-old Karin Andrews has been charged with a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, a charge filed on Tuesday, months after her grandmother died at her 61-year-old uncle’s home in Salem Lakes, Wisconsin. According to a criminal complaint examined by Law&Crime, the alleged incident, which occurred in December 2025, was brought to the attention of law enforcement by Andrews’ uncle. He contacted the police on January 5, nearly a month after the family loss.

The uncle informed police he possessed video evidence of the incident. Upon reviewing this footage, authorities observed Andrews engaged in a heated argument with her uncle, during which she exclaimed, “Are you f—ing kidding me?” Her uncle, described as having remained “calm,” is seen requesting that Andrews leave. Subsequently, Andrews allegedly lunged toward him, seemingly spitting in his direction.

While Andrews was not taken into custody, she has been officially charged with disorderly conduct. Her court appearance is set for August 6.
