Naomi Osaka brought a dose of basketball nostalgia to the US Open on Monday night, paying tribute to NBA icon Allen Iverson — famously known as “The Answer” — with a striking entrance look in New York.

Ahead of her first-round match against unseeded Russian Anastasia Zakharova, Osaka stepped onto Arthur Ashe Stadium’s center court wearing Iverson-inspired arm sleeves and a headband. The four-time Grand Slam champion completed the bold outfit with a floor-length wide-tulle skirt and a sleeveless hoodie, blending tennis fashion with unmistakable basketball influence.

Adding another personal touch, Osaka’s grey sweatshirt featured a distressed, burnout design with newspaper-style clippings highlighting moments from her own career sewn into the fabric.

The ensemble formed part of Nike’s broader push to merge tennis and basketball culture at this year’s US Open. Earlier Monday, Aryna Sabalenka leaned into the same theme, wearing a mesh jersey during her first-round victory over Camila Osorio.

For Osaka, the Allen Iverson tribute carried clear personal meaning. She has long admired the former Philadelphia 76ers point guard, crediting him as a cultural trailblazer whose influence stretched far beyond the basketball court.

‘For me, he’s a trailblazer,’ Osaka said earlier in the week, while donning a t-shirt featuring an old issue of SLAM magazine with Iverson on the cover. ‘I think he’s also someone that I look up to a lot, because he’s done a lot in fashion. Whether it’s on purpose or not, he’s shifted the way that NBA players dress. I also think the whole conversation around clothes in sports, and also just expressing yourself through style, I feel like he’s someone that I look up to in that regard.’

Osaka said she has never met the basketball Hall of Famer, but said ‘hopefully he’ll see this,’ suggesting a future meeting could be arranged.

Designers Téla D’Amore and Ev Bravado were happy to use the 51-year-old point guard as inspiration.

‘The look references Allen Iverson, more specifically, his gray sweats and the nonconformist cadence with which he moved through the world as an athlete,’ they told Vogue. ‘Naomi and Law sent two images our way of Iverson wearing a headband—head only—and from there, we had roughly 30 hours to figure out the rest.’  

The 28-year-old made a fashionable start to her tournament before the action began, with a number of staged photoshoots inside the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Locations included the media room, the player garden, and Arthur Ashe Stadium itself, with Osaka sporting a variety of different looks shared daily in the build-up to the start of the event’s main draw. 

Osaka even enlisted Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach to assist with the creation of one of the outfits, posing up a storm in an archival Spring/Summer 2003 Dolce & Gabbana dress among the desks and monitors in the press workroom. 

On-court however, her outfits have been even more creative. 

The four-time Grand Slam champion kicked off this season’s majors series at the Australian Open, where she sported an outfit some fans perceived as a ‘jellyfish-inspired’ look. 

Osaka arrived at the Rod Laver Arena with a wide-brimmed hat with a white veil and parasol before warming up in a frilled jacket and dress that looked like tentacles.

In June at the French Open, Osaka was accused of not coming to Paris ‘to play tennis’ by her first-round opponent Laura Siegemund after arriving for her opening match in a flowing black skirt and corset made from her old Nike outfits before unveiling the shimmering gold dress, which the Japanese star said she thought looked like the Eiffel Tower at night. 

The black corset and skirt was designed by couturier Kevin Garmanier, who works with upcycled materials. The pleated black skirt was made using the inner layers of one of her jackets while her old tennis skirts and dresses were also cut up and reused. The outfit was then covered in hundreds of hand-applied crystals. 

‘I came here to play tennis, not to put on a fashion show,’ Siegemund had told TNT Sports. ‘And if others want to put on a fashion show, then they should go ahead and do it. That’s totally fine with me.’

Her second-round opponent Donna Vekic took a different view, calling for critics to ‘relax’. 

‘Some people take tennis way too seriously,’ she said. ‘Relax, it’s just an outfit. I think it’s good that she’s doing different things, expressing herself through fashion. 

‘Whether it’s good or bad, that’s a different thing, it’s fashion.’ 

At Wimbledon, Osaka played with the tournament’s strict all-white outfit by turning to Japanese designer Hana Yagi for a kimono-inspired look which referenced both Kill Bill star Lucy Liu, and kirigami, the Japanese art of paper-cutting. 

Osaka sported the custom white outfit, covered with embroidered cranes and cherry blossom, both enduring symbols of Japanese culture, with bell-shaped sleeves, an obi belt, and a trailing tulle skirt.

Osaka finished the outfit with a kanzashi hair ornament, historically worn by geisha, and Mikimoto jewellery from the famous Japanese luxury pearl brand. 

As Osaka progressed throughout the tournament, she subtly changed the styling of the outfit, opting to wear just the belt and trailing tiered skirt, or the jacket open instead of cinched at the waist. 

After defeating Aryna Sabalenka to book her spot in the quarter-finals however, Osaka changed her tune somewhat, saying that she felt inspired to ‘dial back’ her focus on outfits, and instead switch it to tennis. 

Discussing her photoshoots before the tournament, Osaka shared that she had been inspired by her own experiences spending time on-site late before the crowds pour in.

‘I feel like I’ve just been running around the grounds earlier in the morning just before, like, the crowds come in, and I feel like I’ve also just been exploring places that I’ve never been to before,’ Osaka shared. ‘And I always feel a little, like, am I allowed to be in here? But we keep getting by.

‘So I would say we just open doors and kind of like peek in. But also Seb (photographer Sebastian Arriagada) kind of led me into the media room. Yeah, thank you for letting me take photos in your workplace.

‘Honestly, like, nothing I do, I do it to make a statement. I think it just ends up being that way,’ she said of her eye-catching on-court looks. 

‘But I literally do the things that I love to do, and I feel like people relate to it, and I’m really glad and grateful for that, because I feel like the type of person I am, a lot of people can see themselves in me. I really, honestly, I love that about myself.’ 

New body camera video released by police in Maryland captures a tense encounter in which an alleged carjacking suspect drove toward officers, hit one officer and several vehicles, and was then fired upon as she tried to get away.

Anne Arundel County police said officers were called around 9 p.m. on May 7 to the area of North Crain Highway and 11th Avenue in Glen Burnie after a reported hit-and-run. Investigators said the woman had crashed her vehicle into another car, then forcibly took a vehicle from a family member who had come to assist her.

Authorities later identified the woman as 28-year-old Jasmin L. Cooper and said she was found inside the vehicle in the 8500 block of Severn.

In the footage, officers are seen aiming their weapons at Cooper as she remains inside the car, repeatedly ordering her to “turn the car off” and “get out of the car.” At one point, she lifts her hands from the steering wheel, but she does not step out of the vehicle.

“So what, she stole her son’s car?” one officer is heard saying in the footage.

A short time later, the woman pulled out of the parking space and sped away while officers hurried out of the way.

Police said Cooper drove toward the officers, striking an officer, two patrol cars and another vehicle, prompting officers to discharge their firearms, striking her..

Additional officers responding to the scene observed Cooper turn onto Reece Road. She crashed into another car in the area of Reece Road and Telegraph Road and attempted to break into another occupied vehicle before officers apprehended her.

The footage shows the woman lying on the ground in handcuffs. The video also shows officers bandaging the woman’s wound after she was shot in the parking lot.

Cooper was charged with carjacking, attempted carjacking , multiple counts of reckless endangerment, first- and second-degree assault and related charges.

The suspect and the officer who was struck by her were both treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul faced fresh criticism after delivering remarks at an Islamic center in Queens while wearing a traditional headscarf.

The Democratic governor had already clashed with Ted Cruz last year over her decision to wear a head covering at the funeral of slain NYPD officer Didarul Islam.

On Friday, Hochul visited the Islamic Cultural Center of New York in Queens, where she attended the center’s weekly Jummah prayer service.

Video shared on social media showed the governor wearing a black headscarf with a charcoal gray suit as she addressed those gathered.

In the clip, Hochul thanked Tareq Albanai, Kuwait’s representative to the United Nations, referring to him as “his excellency.”

The governor also thanked Albanai for allowing her to ‘be part of the family’ by inviting her to the center. 

The center thanked Hochul in an Instagram post Friday that showed two photos of Hochul not wearing the headscarf. 

‘Her visit was a meaningful recognition of the role ICCS plays in New York as a community partner serving and bringing together New Yorkers from across our diverse city and state,’ they wrote.

‘We are grateful to Governor Hochul for spending time with our community and for her continued commitment to ensuring that every New Yorker feels safe, respected, and supported.’

They said the liberal was able to speak to their congregation before visiting the school on the campus. 

Much like her 2025 appearance in a headscarf, she drew furious criticism from prominent conservatives, including Cruz. 

Bruce Blakeman, the Republican Nassau County Executive running against her for governor in November, called it ‘tone-deaf’ just weeks before the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. 

‘Kathy Hochul will say whatever she needs to say and become whoever she needs to become when there are votes on the line,’ he wrote. 

‘Less than two weeks before the 25th anniversary of 9/11, this kind of political pandering is especially tone-deaf. New Yorkers deserve a Governor with principles that don’t change depending on the audience.’

CNN conservative commentator Scott Jennings joked that it was rich coming from the party that accused Republicans of oppressing women.

‘Republicans need to stop this theocratic Handmaid’s Tale bullcrap … wait being told this is the Democratic Governor of New York,’ he wrote. 

‘A self-described feminist voluntarily wearing a hijab to not offend/arouse Muslim men. Oh, the irony,’ added Riley Gaines. 

Cruz previously slammed Hochul for wearing the scarf to Officer Islam’s funeral in 2025, reacting to a photo of her by asking: ‘Um, wut?’

Hochul fired back at the time that ‘respecting a grieving family’s faith is “wut” leaders and anyone with basic decency would do.’ 

The Daily Mail has reached out to Governor Hochul for comment. 

A recent survey showed Hochul leading Blakeman by just four points, 47-43. Ten percent of registered voters are still undecided.

Red Oak Strategic – which conducted the poll on behalf of a pro-Blakeman super PAC – showed just 38 percent of those questioned viewing the Democrat favorably, compared to 58 percent unfavorably.

Only 33 percent of those surveyed say Hochul – who has been endorsed by socialist and newfound ally Zohran Mamdani – deserves a second full term.

Blakeman, meanwhile, is seen favorably by 30 percent of voters against just 23 percent unfavorably, according to The New York Post .

Perhaps most alarmingly, Hochul – who took over in 2021 after Andrew Cuomo resigned – trails Blakeman among independents by a whopping 21 points, 54-33.

Positive signs for Hochul remain her advantage in fundraising, as she has a combined $43million to spend between her own campaign and the state Democrat Party.

Hochul defeated former Congressman and current EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin by just six points in 2022, when traditionally liberal areas lagged in the midterm of Joe Biden’s presidency.

CHICAGO (WLS) — As summer nears its end in Chicago, the city is confronting the deadliest and largest mass shooting of the season, which unfolded over the weekend.

At least 41 people were shot in incidents of gun violence across Chicago from Friday through Sunday night, with three people killed. Among those victims were 15 people struck by gunfire Saturday night in Washington Park, including one person who died.

The day in Washington Park had started on a peaceful note, as former residents of the Robert Taylor Homes came together for a reunion. But by nightfall, the gathering had been shattered by violence.

Bamani Obadele, who once lived in the Robert Taylor Homes, said the community must not allow shootings like this to become an accepted part of life.

“This is not something we should embrace as a norm. This is unacceptable and we need to do better as a community to get out in front of these incidents,” said Obadele, who is with the community health organization Acclivus.

Obadele said he believes the shooting targeted 35yearold Rontonio Guterz, who was killed. Fourteen others were injured, most of them described as innocent bystanders.

Pastor Sandie Norman of Life Beyond Limit Inc. urged those responsible to stop the violence.

“I really want to speak to the shooters. You know what you’re doing is wrong. You know you don’t get a pass to kill people and go into these large gatherings shooting innocent people,” she said. “We have a tendency to normalize 15 people that have been shot one day and the by tomorrow the issue goes away. And it should be more accountability.”

Earlier in the day, Acclivus had a table in the park offering information about its services, including mental health therapy and crime intervention. Obadele said he is concerned that many young people will be scarred after witnessing the violence.

A short distance away in Douglass Park, another shooting left one person dead and two others injured. Acclivus is offering services to those affected by both incidents.

“We must help young people understand this is not normal behavior and this is not acceptable means to an end. We have to deal with conflict in a different way,” Obadele said.

Chicago police say they have made no arrests so far in either of those shootings. Crimestoppers is offering a reward for information.

Acclivus will host an event Tuesday to help victims and their families at their office on 54th and Wentworth from 2-6 p.m.

A suspected reckless driver led San Diego police on a bizarre Sunday morning chase that wound through city streets and ended on a busy beach, where surprised beachgoers looked on as officers arrested him.

The incident unfolded shortly before 7:30 a.m. after San Diego police received several reports of a man driving dangerously in the Pacific Beach area, the department told News Media.

Callers told police the driver of a tan or gold Nissan Frontier was spinning donuts in parking lots, coming close to hitting other vehicles and possibly crashing into curbs and a retaining wall.

Officers reached the neighborhood within minutes and saw the pickup traveling west toward the coast. When one officer tried to pull the vehicle over, police said the driver refused to stop, triggering a pursuit.

Officers eventually terminated the pursuit because of what police described as the driver’s “increasing wanton disregard to public safety.”

Police later located the truck again, but the driver allegedly failed to yield a second time, sparking another pursuit that officers also terminated.

By then, police said the Nissan was wanted in connection with felony evading, and officers saturated the area in an effort to locate it.

Officers eventually spotted the truck again driving slowly but held off on another attempted stop until the department’s ABLE, or Airborne Law Enforcement, helicopter was overhead and able to track it.

The helicopter followed the Nissan as it drove onto the beach and headed toward the water, police said.

Video from the scene shows stunned beachgoers watching as officers converge on the pickup on the sand. The driver, identified by police as 25-year-old Griffin Charles Foy, is seen outside the truck with his hands raised as officers move in to detain him.

A police K-9 was also at the scene but was not deployed during Foy’s arrest, authorities said.

Police said officers conducted a high-risk vehicle stop because of the nature of the alleged violations and Foy’s “disregard to public safety.”

Foy was taken into custody without further incident.

He was booked into San Diego Central Jail on charges of felony evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety, obstructing or resisting a peace officer and driving under the influence of drugs, according to police.

Despite the chaotic pursuit, police said no one was injured.
