The manager of a hotel targeted by Islamic State-backed militants in Mozambique has defended his decision to escape by helicopter with two dogs, shortly before a British contractor was killed.

Timothy Roberts told an inquest that the owners of the Amarula Hotel had instructed him to board the aircraft, which cost £11,200 to charter.

The helicopter pilot said the dogs were placed in the hold, meaning they did not occupy seats that could have been offered to other evacuees.

Mr Roberts has faced criticism for allegedly “abandoning” the hotel before contractor Philip Mawer, 58, was killed while attempting to flee in a road convoy. His vehicle was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade.

The inquest at Winchester Coroner’s Court heard that Mr Mawer had spent 18 months working in Mozambique when the coastal town of Palma was ambushed by militants from the Islamic State-backed group Al-Shabaab in March 2021.

He had been offered a place on another helicopter but declined, “insisting women and children went first”, before joining the convoy of vehicles that later came under attack as it tried to reach safety.

Mr Mawer, who was originally from Somerset, worked as a project manager for RA International. The company had been contracted to build accommodation for workers involved in “the largest gas operation in Africa”, run by TotalEnergies.

Giving evidence at the inquest into Mr Mawer’s death, Mr Roberts said he had urged him to leave earlier, but the contractor had refused.

In a statement, Mr Roberts said he had grown close to Mr Mawer during the Covid lockdown in 2020 and had been worried about his safety.

He said he began trying to arrange an evacuation on March 24 after hearing people nearby shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

“I phoned my contacts and told them we had been compromised and had no weapons. I called everyone, police, and told them we had to get out. Nothing occurred,” he said.

“They were rescuing governors and staff. When I asked if they could rescue other people I was told they could not.”

“I called Phil as I was concerned for him and told him to get on, but he said no. He wanted women and children to go first.”

“After the fourth flight we were told they had no fuel and, with daylight diminishing, it couldn’t fly.”

“The guests all became quite sombre as they all thought they would be saved and they hadn’t been. The fighting intensified.”

Two days later, Mr Roberts said he was informed that another helicopter would arrive to evacuate them.

“I believed that were we to stay we would have been killed. We were merely sitting ducks,” he said.

“I called everyone together and said we needed to leave as soon as possible.”

‘I was then instructed by the hotel owners that a helicopter was coming and I should get on it.

‘At 15.15 hours [the] convoy left. A helicopter came in and I was evacuated. At the same time I was told the convoy had been targeted.’

Simon Everett, chief executive of Everett Aviation – which rescued the hotel manager and the two dogs – said ‘his company had no responsibility to evacuate people’.

He said: ‘I’ve known the manager of the hotel for a long time and Tim Roberts, known as Robbie. We were good friends

‘The only reason we were there is he telephoned my general manager and asked to be rescued because insurgents were advancing on the hotel.

‘I authorised them to rescue him, three staff members and his two dogs.

‘It was a four-seat vehicle and I was told the two dogs did not take any seats.

‘In hindsight I should never have made the decision to authorise the rescue. It was too dangerous. The pilot could have been killed as well as the passengers.’

Reinaldo, an IT specialist working for the hotel whose surname was not given, was in the passenger seat of the pick-up truck Mr Mawer was driving at more than 60mph. He survived when it was struck by the rocket-propelled grenade. 

He told the inquest their vehicle came under gunfire before the rocket hit, adding: ‘Around 15.15 we set off in a convoy. Phil’s pick-up was the 16th in the convoy. We were travelling at very high speed, maybe 100kmh. 

‘We became attacked by al-Shabaab and gunfire started hitting us. The vehicle behind us began reversing. I became aware that we ourselves were hit by an RPG.

‘Our vehicle began skidding and was still under fire. We got out and ran.’

TotalEnergies has been accused of hampering rescue attempts and failing to provide enough fuel for helicopters trying to bring people to safety. 

TEPMA1, a TotalEnergies Mozambican subsidiary, denied having any responsibility for Mr Mawer and said it could not release fuel to DAG, the private military group working on behalf of the Mozambique government fighting insurgents and rescuing hostages. 

It said it did not know Mr Mawer was still in Palma and claimed human rights abuse allegations against DAG meant it could not provide it with fuel. 

The inquest continues.  

Fifty-five years after Gene Wilder first appeared as Willy Wonka, the eccentric and enigmatic chocolatier remains one of cinema’s most enduring characters.

The 1971 adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s classic was followed by Tim Burton’s 2000s remake starring Johnny Depp, while a more recent prequel explored Wonka’s early life with Timothée Chalamet in the title role.

Now, the beloved story is being reinvented once again in Netflix’s series Wonka’s The Golden Ticket, which arrives on Wednesday, September 23.

The show follows 12 “Golden Ticket winners” as they enter a new version of Wonka’s Chocolate Factory and take part in a series of games inspired by both the classic film and Dahl’s original novel.

Viewers may recognise the voice guiding them through the adventure. Netflix has partnered with AI audio company ElevenLabs to recreate Gene Wilder’s voice, a decade after the actor’s death.

The series will also feature Rusty Goffe, who appeared in the 1971 movie and is returning as the head Oompa Loompa.

It remains unclear whether any of the original child stars will appear. Since the film launched them into the spotlight, their lives have taken remarkably different paths. So, where are they now?

Peter Ostrum 

Peter Ostrum was 14 years old when he made his screen debut as Charlie Bucket in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. He is now 68.

Playing the Golden Ticket winner alongside Gene Wilder, Ostrum later described his pay as “paltry.” He ultimately left acting behind and built a career as a veterinarian.

Despite stepping away from Hollywood, he has said the film continues to provide him with a small stream of income.

During an appearance at the Snowtown Film Festival in 2018, Ostrum said he received roughly $8 to $9 in royalties every three months when the movie aired on television.

The film initially received “lukewarm reviews” and, in Ostrum’s words, “died a quiet death.” It earned around $4 million at the box office before quickly fading from view.

Its fortunes changed through repeated television broadcasts in the 1980s, when it gradually developed a devoted following. Ostrum has admitted he did not realise just how popular the movie had become.

Ostrum told the Daily Mirror: “Back then, when the film came out, there was no red-carpet premiere.

“I was in my hometown in Ohio, and they held an opening there. I was the only one who attended. There was a little bit of fanfare, but not much, and the film died a quiet death.

“It received lukewarm reviews and people forgot about it. It wasn’t until video came along ten years later that it resurfaced and took on a life of its own.”

Ostrum eventually exchanged acting for veterinary medicine. After earning a doctorate from the prestigious Cornell University, he became a respected veterinarian, using money from the film to buy a horse.

He turned down a potentially lucrative three-film deal with producer David L Wolper following his success in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory to concentrate on his studies before specialising in treating cattle and horses.  

‘Everybody could be so lucky to have an experience like this and then to go in a completely different direction,’ he told the Today show in 2015.

Discussing his brief acting career with the Daily Express in 2014, the Ohio-born father of two recalled: ‘Looking back, my pay cheque was paltry, but it was during filming that I really became interested in medicine.’ 

Peter continued: ‘People tell me they watched Willy Wonka so many times growing up that they wore out their VHS copy. We had no idea we were making a classic, which even coined a new phrase: “I’ve found the golden ticket.”

‘I will always cherish my memories of making the movie, but I feel I won the golden ticket by becoming a vet.’

Julie Dawn Cole 

Julie, now 68, played the famously spoiled Veruca Salt – the girl that always wanted more.

She ends up plummeting down a garbage chute in the film when she stands on an eggdicator when it shows her to be a ‘bad egg’.

The mother of two starred on television shows including Fat Families, long-running soap operas Emmerdale and EastEnders, and hospital drama Holby City. 

She’s now a qualified psychotherapist but regularly revisits her childhood role, having starred in 2010 Edinburgh Fringe show Willy Wonka Revisited: The Veruca Salt Sessions.

Julie also worked as children’s services manager at Woking Hospice where in 2014 she auctioned off some memorabilia she was given from the Wonka set to raise money for the charity.

It included a ‘golden ticket’ and the contract the children sign in the film before entering the factory.

Back in 2024, Julie featured alongside her former co-star Paris Themmen in Willy’s Candy Spectacular: A Musical Parody at the Edinburgh Fringe.

The musical comedy was based on an ‘immersive’ Willy Wonka experience in Glasgow, which descended into chaos after parents paid £35-a-head to turn up at a near empty warehouse. 

Paris Themmen 

While he didn’t fully get his dream of becoming a TV star, Paris Themmen still works in the entertainment industry.

Paris, now 67, had acted before his role as television-mad Mike Teavee, but took an official break from acting as a teenager ‘to be a kid’.

He’s taken occasional television roles in adulthood and other careers have included flirtations with film production and commercial casting.

Paris also now signs autographs at movie conventions, runs a photography business and makes sporadic appearances in commercials, plays and on TV shows.

He also founded Access International, a travel service that arranged Europe-bound charter flights for backpackers.

Speaking about his time on set with Gene and his castmates in Munich, where the film was largely shot, he told Collider: ‘It was surprising because we were in Germany, right next to Switzerland and Holland, where they make gorgeous chocolate. 

‘And yet, they shipped Hershey bars, Almond Joys and Mounds to us from America, so that was a bit of a crime against chocolate and humanity that they did that. There were definitely things for us to eat, dummy leaves and some marzipan things. 

‘I liked the gum, which wasn’t gum. It was actually taffy. It was the three-course gum, which wasn’t gum. It was taffy, but it was very yummy. I liked that one.’ 

Paris currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife of nine years, Nikki Grillos.

Denise Nickerson

Denise Nickerson later revealed her role as chewing-gum fanatic Violet Beauregarde nearly cost her her teeth.

Denise admitted to developing 13 cavities in her teeth while preparing for the role. 

The former child star claimed the damage was caused by the high-sugared Bazooka gum she munched on in order to get into character.

Denise was also a regular on TV shows such as Search For Tomorrow, The Brady Bunch, Dark Shadows and The Electric Company. 

Her last role was Zero To Sixty in 1978. 

Twice married, she eventually quit acting and worked as an accountant for an engineering plant and as an office manager at a doctor’s office. 

In 2018 she was hospitalised after suffering a stroke before submitting herself to the care of family members. 

On July 8, 2019, the former actress was again rushed to hospital following an overdose of prescription medication and died on July 10, aged 62, after developing pneumonia and slipping into a coma. 

Denise’s family later confirmed the news on Facebook with a message that read: ‘She’s gone,’ before revealing she died in her Colorado hospital bed at approximately 10.30pm local time.

Michael Bollner 

Michael played chocolate-chomping Augustus Gloop and still lives in Germany.

He traded acting for tax; the chubby-cheeked child star is now an accountant in Munich.

The former actor, now 67, starred in a handful of German language films after Willy Wonka, but quit soon after because his father wanted him to finish school.

Addressing his career change with Collider, Michael said: ‘I run a little tax office in Munich, and we spend every Christmas together with my employees. 

‘Every two or three years, I show the Wonka movie. The film is not famous in Germany and my new employees have to know what a star their boss is.’ 

In an earlier interview with This Morning, the former actor admitted he had no idea the film would become so popular. 

‘I just went down to make this movie, stayed there for a few weeks and I didn’t really know what was going on,’ he recalled. ‘I thought, “This is just a movie and it will fade away very quickly.”‘

Michael’s greedy character is famously sucked into a chocolate river in one famous scene from the film but he admitted it was less enjoyable than it looks on-screen.   

‘It was no chocolate at all, but just stinking water lying around for more weeks,’ he told Hollywood Reporter. ‘And it was dark water. I had to jump in that water, which was just 15 centimetres deep. 

‘There was a hole about three meters [wide], and I had to hit the hole, which was not so easy as the water was very dark. So I was always afraid that I will hit my head on the ground of the river.’ 

Gene Wilder 

Gene Wilder, who played Willy Wonka, died in 2016 aged 83 following a three-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

The actor was a household name long before he agreed to play Wonka, a decision that apparently dismayed Roald Dahl.

The author had wanted legendary Irish comedian Spike Milligan to take the role before producers approached the American star, who accepted on one condition.

He said: ‘When I make my first entrance, I’d like to come out of the door carrying a cane and then walk toward the crowd with a limp. After the crowd sees Willy Wonka is a cripple, they all whisper to themselves and then become deathly quiet.

‘As I walk toward them, my cane sinks into one of the cobblestones I’m walking on and stands straight up, by itself; but I keep on walking, until I realize that I no longer have my cane. 

‘I start to fall forward, and just before I hit the ground, I do a beautiful forward somersault and bounce back up, to great applause.’

When asked why, he added: ‘From that time on, no one will know if I’m lying or telling the truth.’

He went on to write several screenplays and direct several films.

Gene was married four times in his life, with his first two marriages ending in divorce.

Jack Albertson 

Jack, who played Grandpa Joe, died in November 1981 at the age of 74 from colorectal cancer.

Before his untimely death he had a successful career in acting, including various stints on Broadway and before Wonka he won an Academy Award For Best Supporting Actor in 1968 for his portrayal of John Cleary in The Subject Of Roses.

The seasoned actor also won a Tony Award for an earlier performance in a 1964 stage production of Roses, and was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 1977. 

Rusty Goffe 

Rusty Goffe starred as the head Oompa Loompa, and as such was one of the few to receive a credit on the film.

The Kent-born actor, now 77, enjoyed a successful career after Willy Wonka and was last seen on screen in 2016.

He appeared in Flash Gordon (1980), Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977) and five of the eight Harry Potter films.

Rusty, who was 22 when the film was made, said he was ‘very proud’ to be a part of the Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory film, adding: ‘When we were doing it we didn’t realise it was going to be as big.

‘It was made for adults by the way, not for children. It was made for adults. And adults and children alike loved it.’

He paid tribute to Gene when he died in 2016 calling him ‘an amazing man, he was very gentle, very quiet, but he knew what he wanted’. 

‘He was a very, very funny man and it showed in the movie. He had a magical aura about him and it really showed,’ he added.

Rusty can currently be seen on Netflix’s show after reviving his Oompa Loompa role.
