Northeast Braces for Imminent Tornado Strikes Amid Severe Storm Alert

0

A severe thunderstorm is poised to impact nearly 50 million residents across the Northeast, with the potential to spawn tornadoes that could affect multiple states within hours.

According to warnings from the National Weather Service, 17 states find themselves in the path of this looming storm. This includes regions such as New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio.

Beginning Tuesday afternoon, areas including major cities like New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Washington DC, should brace for flash flooding, hail, and wind gusts that could reach up to 75 mph.

The NWS also indicates a slight possibility of this system developing into a supercell, an intense thunderstorm type known for its ability to generate tornadoes capable of uprooting trees and damaging rooftops.

The Storm Prediction Center at the NWS has outlined a five percent risk for tornadoes within a corridor extending from Kentucky to New York—a region housing approximately 57 million people.

Meteorologist Max Veolicty added: ‘The best chance of tornadoes today will stretch from the Ohio Valley into the Northeast and back into the I-95 corridor of the Mid-Atlantic.’

AccuWeather Expert Meteorologist Tyler Roys said in a statement: ‘While tornadoes can’t be ruled out, the bigger threat today is damaging straight-line winds as lines of storms sweeps through the region.’

‘In a densely populated corridor like this, that kind of wind can down trees and power lines fast and it’s timing up with the evening commute, which is exactly when we don’t want people caught off guard.’

North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and parts of Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Connecticut and Massachusetts also face a chance of seeing extreme weather Tuesday night.

Potentially deadly flash flooding is expected to cause major travel disruptions along the entire East Coast on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the heaviest flooding expected to span from the New York City area to North Carolina.

New York City’s Department of Emergency Management has warned residents to expect the worst of the storm between 6pm and 11pm ET.

New York’s John F Kennedy and LaGuardia Airports have both issued ground stops due to impending thunderstorms, delaying travelers by more than two hours.

AccuWeather meteorologists expect the storm to have its biggest impact on the evening commute for millions of Americans tonight.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms will increase the risk of localized flash flooding, especially in urban areas where drains are unable to handle that amount of water pouring down, sometimes in just a matter of minutes.

This often catches people by surprise with little or no warning to get to safety. Forecasters have warned that this makes flash flooding one of the most dangerous types of flooding.

NWS officials warned in a statement: ‘Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.’

No official tornado watches or warnings have been issued in the Northeast as of 12pm ET.

AccuWeather revealed that the major storm event formed after a large cold front pushed eastward across the US and crashed into very warm and humid air lingering after a massive heat dome blanketed the region earlier in the month.

When cooler air clashes with this hot, moist air, it forces the warm air to rise quickly – creating powerful thunderstorms.

Cities with large public transportation systems, such as New York and New Jersey, have already warned that subways could be flooded during the heavy downpours Tuesday evening.

Newark, New Jersey’s Office of Emergency Management has begun placing storm barricades in areas where flooding is expected.

Residents in Connecticut and Pennsylvania have already begun reporting afternoon storms sparking flash floods.

Specifically, the National Weather Service’s New York office issued flash flood alerts in Bridgeport, Stamford and Norwalk, Connecticut through 3.30pm ET.

Highland Park Police Intensify Search for Two Individuals After Walker Avenue Shooting

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (WLS) — Authorities in Highland Park are turning to the community for assistance in locating two individuals who hold significant interest in a Monday evening shooting incident, which left one person seriously injured and hospitalized.

Officials have unveiled photos of the two individuals seen conversing with the victim shortly before the shooting occurred.

Police have identified the pair—a man and a woman—as either possible witnesses or suspects connected to the incident.

The altercation took place on Monday night along the 300-block of Walker Avenue, close to Highland Park’s boundary with Highwood, where the shooting victim was found.

The 30-year-old man who was injured was initially rushed to the hospital in critical condition, though as of Tuesday morning, police have confirmed that his condition is stabilizing.

Police said it is an isolated incident and those involved knew each other.

Following the shooting, officers with rifles and shields could be seen patrolling the area along with drones and dogs.

“No I figured they’re long gone or they’ve been down there in the forest preserve, who knows,” neighborhood resident Marian McNair said.

McNair was determined to take her morning walk even though police are still looking for two people wanted in connection with a shooting the day before.

“The neighborhood is changing, things change. There was at Santee’s a couple of weeks ago and now we don’t know the whole story,” McNair said.

People living in the area say following the shooting officers armed with rifles and shields could be seen patrolling the area using drones and dogs.

At one point, people were told to shelter in place. Neighbors said the situation was unsettling.

“I don’t know. It’s starting to get, you know, it’s getting pretty nasty. This is something happen in Chicago, Waukegan or North Chicago, but not here in Highwood,” one nearby resident said.

Nicola Roberts-Jones said she may have seen the two persons of interest in the neighborhood the day before the shooting,

“It was a similar outfit that’s why I recognize a lady, but that was the one thing that kind of made me a little bit more nervous because the fact that you saw them the day before,” Roberts-Jones said.

The shelter-in-place has been lifted.

Police are warning the public that if you see either of the individuals, call 911.

Effective Daily Leg Exercises to Enhance Balance Beyond Lunges for Those Over 60

0

Embrace balance to enjoy a vibrant and independent lifestyle as you get older.

>

For those aged 60 and above, enhancing and sustaining balance should top the list in workout routines. As we age, several bodily functions—including those essential for balance—naturally start to diminish. Balance hinges on the interplay of vision, inner ear function, and sensory capacities, which are crucial for bodily stability and reaction.

“As you grow older, your vision, inner ear, and joint nerve receptors become less responsive, compelling your brain to exert more effort in spatial awareness,” explains Denise Chakoian, a Certified Fitness Trainer from Rhode Island and owner of Core Cycle and Fitness LaGree. With over 16 years of experience training diverse age groups and fitness levels, she notes, “Keeping active can hinder these changes considerably, though it doesn’t completely halt the natural aging impacts on these systems. This is why even regular walkers, weight lifters, or cyclists might find their balance less reliable than it was two decades ago.”

Maintaining stability isn’t just about staying upright—it’s fundamental for independence, letting you live life to the fullest. To aid this endeavor, we consulted Chakoian, who shared six daily leg exercises that can enhance balance more swiftly than lunges. These exercises target the muscles crucial for maintaining steadiness during regular activities such as walking, standing up, and climbing stairs.

“These exercises collectively test balance, coordination, and lower-body strength without the need for complicated gear or advanced fitness levels. They also teach the ankles, hips, glutes, and core to function together—mirroring how balance operates in real-life scenarios,” Chakoian elaborates. “By simulating daily movements, the enhancements they bring are practical and easily integrated into everyday routines. When practiced consistently, they can lower the risk of falls while fostering confidence and autonomy in movement.”

Director Claims FBI Delays Led to Possible Erasure of Crucial Nancy Guthrie Footage

0

Delay in involving the FBI in the investigation of Nancy Guthrie’s alleged kidnapping may have led to key video evidence slipping through the cracks. The intricate procedure required to access Nest doorbell video after her camera went missing and she lacked a cloud subscription complicated the recovery process, as stated by the FBI director.

Authorities report that Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, was abducted from her residence in Tucson, Arizona, in the early morning hours of February 1.

Working alongside Google, the FBI managed to retrieve cached footage from Guthrie’s Nest camera, which was not saved for long-term retrieval and was close to being erased, according to Director Kash Patel in his briefing to News Media.

Any additional footage that might have existed was lost before the FBI’s arrival on the scene, leaving its potential value as evidence unknown.

“We were looking for the needle of all needles in all haystacks, because since she didn’t pay for it, they didn’t record that data,” he said. “But there was a chance that it was located in their cache just before it was being deleted.”

That’s where investigators found the video and still images that Patel made public on Feb. 10, in the hope that someone would recognize the suspect and turn him in.

A short time later, FBI experts had generated a rough physical description. The masked suspect is described as between 5 feet, 9 inches and 5 feet, 10 inches tall with a medium build. He was wearing a black Ozark Trail backpack.

A masked man appeared on Guthrie’s Nest camera at least twice — once on the day of her Feb. 1 abduction, and once about three weeks earlier, News Media has reported previously. Authorities have not publicly ruled out the potential for additional suspects in the case.

There is only a single still image publicly available from the earlier visit. Experts say it’s likely that video existed at one point.

If the FBI were involved sooner, agents may have been able to recover additional evidence, which potentially may have included a suspect vehicle, more footage of the masked intruder or even additional imagery from a prior visit to Guthrie’s home, Patel said.

Photos released on Feb. 10, 2026, show a “subject” on Nancy Guthrie’s property. (Provided by FBI)

“What we do know is that the longer you wait, there’s no chance of recovering the video,” said Morgan Wright, the CEO and founder of the National Center for Open and Unsolved Cases. “The earlier you get started, the better your chances. Waiting four days may have been fatal to the recovery of some video that could have been more illuminating.”

Time is the enemy of all investigations and the thief of vital evidence. You can never go back and get this evidence once it’s gone. Time is the most critical factor in any investigation, whether it’s finding the suspect, finding the victim, or finding the evidence.

Because Google and the FBI were able to recover at least some video through this process, it’s fair to infer that earlier video would have existed as well, Wright told News Media.

“If this was recovered from a backend cache, and it was almost deleted, that implies that another video was deleted because they would have been able to recover more than what they did,” he said. “Timing is always an issue.”

At this point, however, whatever may or may not have existed remains unknown and unavailable to investigators.

“Time is the enemy of all investigations and the thief of vital evidence,” Wright said. “You can never go back and get this evidence once it’s gone. Time is the most critical factor in any investigation, whether it’s finding the suspect, finding the victim, or finding the evidence.”

Patel has previously said the FBI was ready to help on day one and explained this week that he wanted to deploy scores of FBI personnel from the outset. However, local authorities didn’t request the FBI’s assistance for four days.

By the time the FBI arrived, the crime scene had already been released. People had been allowed to knock on Guthrie’s front door, where her blood was on the porch. It was secured once more, and FBI agents spent hours examining the home and the yard, collecting additional home security cameras.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has countered that an FBI task force member was present during the initial stages of the investigation — however that officer is not a federal agent.

The sheriff’s department declined to comment for this story.

Anyone with information on Guthrie’s kidnapping is asked to dial 1-800-CALL-FBI or 520-88-CRIME to remain anonymous.

The combined sum of rewards in this case is more than $1.2 million.

Tragic Loss: Godzilla vs. Kong Star Kaylee Hottle Dies at 18 in Fatal Crash

0

Kaylee Hottle, known for her captivating roles in a pair of Godzilla movies, has tragically passed away at the age of 18.

Her father, Joshua Hottle, shared that the young actress lost her life in a car accident on a Tuesday morning in Maryland, as reported by TMZ.

Kaylee, who was part of the deaf community, brought to life a character able to converse with Godzilla via sign language in the 2021 release Godzilla vs Kong and reprised her role in the 2024 installment, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Prior to her film debut, she appeared in advertisements tailored for deaf and hard of hearing audiences.

Her father shared the heartbreaking news with the public during a livestream called ‘I am taking a flight that I never would like to take,’ where he expressed in American Sign Language his journey from Texas to retrieve his daughter’s remains, as indicated by TMZ.

Joshua said he received a phone call from officials telling him his daughter’s heart had stopped on the way to the hospital not long after he learned about the accident.

Kaylee played Jia in the two Godzilla films and had the script translated into ASL with the help of her parents and another individual.

‘I was fine with memorizing the script and signing my lines, but the tough part was signing out the “spoken” parts because we had to change it, and sometimes they’d tell us it was wrong but they didn’t understand that ASL changes almost everything,’ she said during a 2021 interview with The Daily Moth.

‘Because the interpreter said what I said. The producer and director would sometimes say “Don’t say that” and want me to follow the script, but the signs for that sentence would be different in ASL.

‘There was one instance where there was a misunderstanding between us related to the ASL translation, which caused a delay, but they later understood.’

Kaylee also taught her castmates how to sign: ‘Teaching the cast how to sign. They had never interacted with a deaf person before. I had to explain how to sign and use facial expressions. That was the hard part, but when they picked up on it, it was fine. I didn’t really have challenges, they were very accommodating. Some of the workers learned how to sign.’

Kaylee said her character had a ‘special’ connection with King Kong.

‘Because Kong and my character had a special bond. We signed with each other. Not with Godzilla, it was different. Then later we met,’ she said.

Kaylee’s co-star Alexander Skarsgård sang her praises at the time, calling her a scene stealer.

Kaylee ‘steals the movie,’ he told Junkee in 2021.

‘It’s her first movie,’ he said. ‘It’s fascinating how comfortable she is in front of the camera and how quickly she takes notes from the director Adam [Wingard].

‘He’ll explain something and she’ll be like ‘got it, got it’ then she’ll just do it and everyone’s like ‘the f— … how did she?’ She’s so professional and just incredibly … there’s so much going on on her face, her expression and the subtleties of that is fascinating to watch.’

In addition to her role in the Godzilla films, Kaylee appeared on an episode of Magnum P.I. and did commercials for products which helped deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

She did a public service announcement for the video chat messenger Glide and a commercial for Convo Relay.

Kaylee was also featured in 10 Deaf Children: One Powerful Message.

Nicolas Jackson Eyes Aston Villa Move with Unai Emery; Alex Scott Declines New Bournemouth Deal Amid Interest from Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea

0

It’s that exciting time of year once more—the transfer window has swung open and will remain so until September 1, promising a whirlwind of activity as clubs hustle to secure key signings ahead of the new season.

Stay tuned as we bring you the latest updates provided by Simon Jones and the dedicated team at Daily Mail Sport…

Villa step up Garnacho talks

Aston Villa has intensified its pursuit of Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho, signaling a potential high-profile transfer in the making.

Chelsea, aiming for a permanent deal, holds firm at a £40 million valuation, mindful of the sell-on percentage due to Manchester United.

Roma have also offered a loan with options for Garnacho who was of interest to Villa before he left Manchester United last summer.

Villa remain keen to sign Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea and are monitoring developments with Crysencio Summerville at West Ham.

The Hammers have a £39m offer plus add ons on the table from Roma and have added interest from Al Hilal.

PFA free agent squad in action tonight

Former Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams and Egypt international Samy Morsy are in the PFA free agent squad of 21 to face Hednesford Town at Key’s Park Stadium at 7.45 pm tonight.

Former Crystal Palace midfielder Jonny Williams and Egypt international Samy Morsy are in the PFA free agent squad of 21 to face Hednesford Town at Key’s Park Stadium at 7.45 pm tonight.

Around 48 players have now joined the PFA pre-season camp where they train and play a series of friendlies to showcase their availability to clubs over the summer.

Former Manchester United and Port Vale keeper Ben Amos and ex-Ipswich Town striker Connor Wickham are among a growing band of players looking to earn contracts elsewhere.

Another friendly is planned at Tranmere Rovers on Friday.

The games can be viewed on the PFA’s live YouTube stream.

Spurs agree to sell Lankshear to Middlesbrough

Tottenham have agreed to sell Will Lankshear to Middlesbrough for £14million potentially rising to £20m with add-ons.

There is also a 20 per cent sell on clause and Spurs have matching rights on any bids from other clubs in the future.

Striker Lankshear, 21, who was on loan at Oxford United last season, is expected for a medical later today.

Nicolas Jackson interested in Aston Villa move

Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson is interested in his potential switch to Aston Villa to work with his former head coach Unai Emery again.

Jackson’s name came up during conversations between Chelsea and Villa centred on Morgan Rogers, who is set to move to Stamford Bridge for a club-record £117million and sign a six-year deal with the option of an extra year.

Villa have long been admirers of Jackson under Emery, who had the striker at Villarreal. Chelsea have been taking their time to decide on the 25-year-old Senegal international’s future.

With Jackson, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu and Joao Pedro as Xabi Alonso’s striker options currently, there is an acceptance inside of Chelsea that they need to reduce their numbers, especially while facing a season out of Europe.

Joao Pedro is considered untouchable and so not for sale. Delap is keen to have another season to prove himself after a disappointing campaign following his move from Ipswich, while Emegha has only just arrived this summer from their sister side Strasbourg. Guiu is expected to leave either permanently or on loan.

There remains a market for Jackson, who spent the last season on loan at Bayern Munich. Chelsea are believed to value him at £65m.

That is down on the £80m they were understood to be seeking last summer before sanctioning his temporary switch to Bayern. That came at a time when the relationship between Jackson and then-manager Enzo Maresca had broken down.

Chelsea’s plan for Jackson was to have him return in pre-season so that Xabi Alonso could take a closer look at the scorer. Alonso said at his unveiling last week that Jackson was due to join them on their tour of Australia and Asia after his post-World Cup break.

However, sources close to Jackson have told Daily Mail Sport that they are seriously considering Villa as an option after his name was discussed during talks about Rogers. Alejandro Garnacho has also been linked with Villa, but the Argentinian is said to be prioritising a move to Italy.

As reported on Window Watch yesterday, Ipswich are close to sealing a £20m deal for Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu with a further £3m in add-ons.

QPR snap up Lamptey

Former Chelsea and Brighton full-back Tariq Lamptey has joined QPR on a permanent deal.

The 25-year-old has signed on a free transfer after leaving Serie A side Fiorentina.

Lamptey said: ‘I like to get up and down, a lot of energy, a lot of fun. Hopefully I’ll keep the fans on the edge of their seats.

Fiorentina paid £6m for the Ghanaian.

Sheffield United weigh up Matondo move

Sheffield United are continuing to evaluate winger Rabbi Matondo who has impressed during their training camp in Valencia.

The Wales international, who is free to leave SK Brann, is due to play in a behind closed doors friendly against Huddersfield Town today.

Matondo figured in the Blades friendly against Levante last week and Chris Wilder is expected to make a decision this week with the likes of Derby County and Middlesbrough also showing interest.

Sheffield Wednesday close in on TENTH summer signing

Aston Villa forward Tommi O’Reilly is poised to become Sheffield Wednesday’s 10th summer signing.

The 22-year-old, who impressed on loan at Crewe in League Two last season, is due to sign on loan again at Wednesday.

The Owls’ young goalkeeper Logan Stretch, 19, has been loaned out to National League North side Buxton, who are managed by former Wednesday youth coach Jordan Broadbent.

Man City teenager joins Northampton

Manchester City striker Matty Warhurst has joined Northampton Town.

The prolific 19-year-old was keen to leave for first team football and had interest from a host of clubs in League One and League Two including Stockport County, Cambridge United, Leyton Orient and Swindon Town.

Warhurst, who turns 20 in September, has scored 61 goals in 97 games for various City sides in the last few seasons, including 36 goals in 41 games for the under-18s before adding 13 goals in 18 Premier League 2 appearances and eight goals in 11 FA Youth Cup games.

Alex Scott turns down new Bournemouth deal

Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott has turned down a new contract.

Scott has two years remaining on his current deal and was offered fresh terms by the Cherries in March this year.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all hold an interest in the 22-year-old, but Bournemouth’s stance is that he is not for sale this summer – regardless of his contract situation.

Daily Mail Sport understands Bournemouth have not put a price or valuation on the Under-21 European Championship winner as they do not consider him for sale.

Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott has turned down a new contract at the club

Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott has turned down a new contract at the club

Just last week, new Cherries boss Marco Rose told the media he was confident that in-demand Scott and Junior Kroupi would remain on the South Coast for their Europa League campaign.

Bournemouth’s policy this summer is to keep hold of their best players for Europe – including Scott, Kroupi and winger Rayan – but it remains to be seen if substantial offers would test their resolve.

Scott played 39 times for Bournemouth last season and was key to securing European football for the first time in the club’s history.

Thomas Tuchel awarded Scott his first international call-up last November, although he did not earn a cap.

The midfielder also travelled to the United States with the Three Lions before the World Cup to take part in their tournament preparation camp.

Even if Bournemouth could be persuaded to do business over Scott, it’s understood that United would have to sell players to afford the £80m it would be likely to cost to prise him away from the Vitality Stadium.

The club want to sell top-earner Marcus Rashford following his loan spells at Barcelona and Aston Villa, and would listen to offers for Joshua Zirkzee. Manuel Ugarte would also have been available, but the Uruguay midfielder sustained a serious knee injury at the World Cup and will spend much of next season recuperating at Carrington.

As it stands, United will struggle to sign Scott and Roma midfielder Manu Kone appears to be a more realistic option after United held talks with the Frenchman’s camp.

The deaf actress gained fame for portraying Jia in the 2021 film and its follow-up, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, launched in 2024. Her father, Joshua Hottle, shared the heartbreaking news during a Facebook live stream on Tuesday, July 21.

In an emotional recount shared through American Sign Language (ASL), Joshua, who is also deaf, explained he had to travel from Texas to Maryland to retrieve Kaylee’s body after hearing of her untimely death. He disclosed that Kaylee was involved in a severe car accident, with authorities alerting him that her heart had stopped on route to the hospital.

Born in 2007 to a family entirely fluent in ASL, Kaylee naturally embraced sign language. She attended the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, Texas, before officially stepping into the world of acting with a 2017 commercial for the video relay service Convo.

Through her work in commercials, Kaylee found her big break, earning her first major film role as Jia in the action-packed Godzilla vs. Kong, marking her debut in the feature film industry.

In the movie, Jia’s character forges a unique connection with King Kong through sign language, establishing a compassionate and special bond with the monumental creature.

She starred opposite Alexander Skarsgård and Rebecca Hall, who both learned ASL so they could communicate with Kaylee on set when the cameras weren’t rolling.

She reprised the role of Jia in the film’s sequel, and was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor at the 52nd Saturn Awards in 2025.

Tributes have flooded in for Kaylee online, with one writing: “Such a talented young actress who brought so much heart to the Godzilla films.”

Another shared: “Absolutely heartbreaking news. She was so talented and brought such incredible representation to the MonsterVerse films. Rest in peace.”

A third echoed: “That’s awful, such a beautiful talented girl taken way too soon.”

A fourth added: “Heartbroken to hear this, she lit up the screen and now we’ll keep her memory shining.”

Someone else said: ” Awww no!! This is absolutely devastating. I really wasn’t expecting this today. Sending love and prayers to her and her family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Reflecting on the cinematic landscape of July 21, 1966, audiences were captivated by “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, topping box office charts 50 years ago from today. While some might speculate this spoke to turbulent marital dynamics in America back then, the film’s true acclaim came at the 1967 Academy Awards, making history at the 39th ceremony. It joined an exclusive club of films nominated in every possible category. Only two other films have matched this feat to date: the 1931 classic “Cimarron” and Ryan Coogler’s daring 2025 release, “Sinners,” a unique vampire musical.

But what exactly is “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Adapted from Edward Albee’s iconic play, a staple of American theatre, this film was brought to life by the exceptional director Mike Nichols. It stars Hollywood legends Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who were intrinsically connected on-screen and off, as they were wed during the film’s production (from 1964 to 1974, remarrying from 1975 to 1976). In the film, they portray Martha and George, a fractious couple with ties to academia; Martha is the daughter of the university president, while George is entrenched as an associate history professor. The plot thickens one evening when they welcome a younger couple, portrayed by George Segal and Sandy Dennis, into their home, unveiling their volatile nature.

The narrative spirals into chaos with mind-bending games, intense shouting, and alcohol-fueled conflicts as Nick and Honey, the unsuspecting guests, find themselves caught in the psychological crossfire. The film’s peculiar title is born from George and Martha’s strange adaptation of the nursery rhyme, transfiguring “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” into their chilling anthem. It’s a mesmerizing watch, marked by stellar performances and outstanding filmmaking.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? won Oscars … and cemented a legacy

The film made waves at the 39th Academy Awards, clinching five Oscars. Elizabeth Taylor, already an Oscar winner for “BUtterfield 8,” triumphed again as best actress, while Sandy Dennis secured best supporting actress. The film’s technical prowess was honored with awards for art direction, cinematography, and costume design. Despite these successes, it narrowly missed out on the best picture award to “A Man for All Seasons,” which also clinched best director for Fred Zinnemann and best actor for Paul Scofield, leaving Richard Burton without a win.

The legacy of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” is nothing to be scared of, however. Taylor Swift, a noted fan of Taylor for several reasons unrelated to their shared name, released a song on her 2024 album “The Tortured Poets Department” called “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” in a clear reference to this Burton-Taylor classic. (She also, for that matter, released a song simply titled “Elizabeth Taylor” on her 2025 album “The Life of a Showgirl,” so it’s clearly a deep well of inspiration.) Most infamously, “The Dinner Party,” one of the all-time best episodes of the American version of “The Office,” is a take on this play and movie as Steve Carell’s Michael Scott and Melora Hardin’s Jan Levinson torment each other while osso bucco takes hours to braise in the oven, horrifying guests like Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly (John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer).

You can rent “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” on major streaming platforms like Amazon if you haven’t seen it … and if you haven’t, you definitely should check it out.

Officers repeatedly told Matthie to get on the ground, lie on his stomach and place his hands behind his back.

When Matthie was slow to put his hands behind his back, an officer holding a police dog warned that he would be “dog bit” if he did not comply.

After he was handcuffed, two officers got him to his feet before noticing he had a “long” object in his pocket, according to the video.
