The Boys Season 5: Unexpected Villainous Returns That Will Shock Fans

0

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for “The Boys” Season 5, Episode 3 – “Every One of You Sons of B******”

Season 5 of “The Boys” continues to expand its narrative by introducing a slew of intriguing characters. Following the revelation of Ashley’s (played by Colby Minifie) enigmatic abilities and her strategic marriage to newcomer Oh Father (portrayed by Daveed Diggs), the climactic final season further enriches its storyline by reintroducing some iconic villains in Episode 3.

Indeed, both Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito) and Madelyn Stillwell (Elisabeth Shue) make their much-anticipated returns. Last appearing in Season 4, Edgar remains distant from the corridors of power, wisely steering clear of Homelander (Antony Starr). Yet, he’s pulled back into the chaos due to his alleged insights into the V-One serum, which Homelander desires for immortality, while the Boys aim to thwart this ambition. Consequently, much of the episode unfolds within a fortified billionaire bunker where Edgar is sequestered alongside Victoria Neuman’s (Claudia Doumit) daughter Zoe (Olivia Morandin) and Translucent’s (Alex Hassell) offspring, Maverick (Nicholas Hamilton).

On the other hand, Stillwell, despite her demise at Homelander’s hands, reappears in a surreal twist as a visionary apparition. She urges Homelander to embrace a messianic role with a sinister twist, further entwining him with extremist religious ideologies. This bizarre resurrection adds depth to Homelander’s character and underscores his evolving alignment with radicalism.

While Stan Edgar’s re-emergence is less surprising given his history with the Boys, his casual maneuvering into M.M.’s (Laz Alonso) ultimate adversary is noteworthy. By revealing details about the legal battle M.M.’s father Walter Milk waged against Vought and disclosing his intentions to reclaim Vought’s dominance, Edgar sets the stage for a tense reunion. Their inevitable encounter promises to be more explosive than any previous cigars-and-conversation moment.

The Boys is working overtime to bring back all available evils

Stan Edgar has interacted with the Boys so much that his return is the less surprising of the two. However, the way he almost casually turns himself into M.M.’s (Laz Alonso) endgame villain by discussing the lawsuit the latter’s father Walter Milk challenged Vought with and revealing that he plans to take back control of Vought is nothing short of impressive. Expect these two to meet again before the show is over, and this time it won’t be over cigars.

Madelyn Stillwell’s return, on the other hand, had already been teased with the bright light that has been shining on Homelander’s face. Of course, her angelic presence is just another aspect of the volatile supe’s numerous issues, but it just might be the most dangerous one yet. After all, the only thing more dangerous than an egomaniac Superman with no qualms about taking lives is one that believes he has the divine right to do whatever he likes, no matter how many people die on the way.

Combine all this with the return of Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), which was already teased in the ending of “The Boys” Season 4, and it seems that the show is fully committed to bringing back every available antagonist it can possibly get for the endgame. If things stay as horrifyingly inventive as the tactic to bring Stillwell back, we’re certainly not complaining.

“The Boys” Season 5 is streaming on Prime Video.

Revitalize Your Strength After 55: Top 5 Morning Exercises That Outperform Gym Machines

Discover Five Pilates Moves to Enhance Strength Without the Gym

As we age, the decline in physical strength may not be immediately noticeable. Many might be surprised to learn that muscle loss, or sarcopenia, manifests in more subtle ways than just losing the ability to lift weights. It can lead to fatigue and make everyday activities, such as carrying groceries, climbing stairs, or even opening jars, feel like monumental tasks. This reduction in strength can also affect your independence by decreasing stamina and stability.

Instead of worrying about how aging may impact your lifestyle, why not take a proactive approach? We reached out to Lily Collins-Sak, a Pilates expert and founder of The Daily Pilates, who combines her expertise in Kinesiology and Exercise Science to offer a revitalizing fitness plan. Inspired by her passion for movement and holistic wellness, Collins-Sak has crafted five morning exercises designed to rebuild full-body strength more effectively than traditional gym machines, particularly for those over 55.

“After the age of 55, muscle mass can diminish for various reasons,” Collins-Sak explains. “Factors such as hormonal changes, cartilage wear, and the brain’s ability to communicate with muscles can all impact coordination, muscle repair, and range of motion over time. To maintain strength and mobility after 55, it’s crucial to engage in both strength training and exercises that mimic real-life movement patterns.”

“Muscle mass can decline due to a variety of reasons after 55,” explains Collins-Sak. “Hormonal shifts, cartilage changes, your brain to muscle signaling all can affect coordination, muscle repair, and limit your range of motion over time. Staying active after 55 requires incorporating strength training along with mobility work that purposefully focus on real life movement patterns.”

As you sleep, major muscles like your glutes, which support solid posture and daily movement, aren’t completely switched on. When you start your day, these muscles can benefit from gentle engagement to help your body move more efficiently.

“Short, intentional morning workouts rooted in Pilates can help reawaken the body as a whole, improve posture, and build mind-body awareness,” Collins-Sak adds. “Traditional gym machine routines may strengthen but miss integrating mobility and balance components that are increasingly important for maintaining strength and preventing injury.”

Below, she breaks down five exercises that can help rebuild strength. Keep in mind that your morning routine doesn’t need to be long or vigorous in order to be effective. It’s important to choose a workout that seamlessly fits into your schedule and keeps you consistent.

Glute Bridges

“Glute bridges are one of the most effective and approachable exercises for firing our glutes and supporting nearly every movement you make throughout the day,” Collins-Sak says. “Strong, responsive glutes reduce strain on the lower back and improve overall stability. This Pilates staple is also amazing for releasing overnight stiffness throughout the back since it recruits core muscles to help control and articulate the spine.”

  1. Begin by lying flat on your back with bent knees and feet hip-width apart on the mattress, arms at your sides with palms pressing into the surface.
  2. Press through your heels to lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from head to heels.
  3. Squeeze your buttocks, holding at the top for a moment.
  4. Lower your hips back to the start position.

Table Top Taps

“This simple yet powerful move focuses on connecting to your deep core—especially the transverse which helps to stabilize the pelvis and protect the lower back,” Collins-Sak notes. “By maintaining a neutral pelvis (pubic bone level with hip bones) you build awareness of proper alignment. Keep this awareness throughout the day to help maintain proper alignment and support long-term injury prevention.”

  1. Lie flat on your back with your arms at your sides and knees bent at 90 degrees in a tabletop position with your hips stacked over your knees.
  2. Activate your core and gently press your back into your floor.
  3. Keep your knees bent and together.
  4. Slowly lower one foot toward the floor, tapping your toes to the ground.
  5. Lift and repeat on the other side.

Side-Lying Leg Lifts

“The outer hips and glutes are essential for balance and stability, especially while walking. Because the exercise is performed while maintaining a neutral pelvis, it also helps to recruit your deep transverse and obliques, win-win,” Collins-Sak says.

  1. Begin by lying on one side with your legs stacked, your head resting on your bottom arm, and your top hand placed on your hip.
  2. Lift your top leg upward.
  3. Hold it for a moment.
  4. Slowly lower.
  5. Repeat on the other side.

Bird Dogs

“The entire posterior chain benefits from this one! Focus on reaching long through the body rather than lifting high. This sense of length and control helps improve posture and coordination, and overall body awareness,” says Collins-Sak.

  1. Start on all fours.
  2. Extend your left arm and right leg.
  3. Hold for a moment before returning to the start position.
  4. Switch sides and continue to alternate.

Spine Roll-Downs

“Spine roll-downs are an amazing and mindful way to help bring movement to the spine first thing in the morning! This exercise helps to release tension, improve circulation, and restore mobility after sleep. As you gently articulate through each segment of the spine, you encourage blood flow and oxygen throughout the entire body, waking you up like a big latte,” Collins-Sak notes.

  1. Begin standing tall.
  2. Slowly “roll” your body down, bringing your belly button in toward your spine.
  3. Reach your arms toward the floor as you roll down through your spine.
  4. Use control as you roll back up to the start position.

80s Brat Pack Star Stuns Fans with Dramatic Transformation at 66

0

In a rare public appearance on Monday, an iconic heartthrob from the 1980s turned heads with a strikingly different look while out and about in Los Angeles.

Now at 66, the actor seems worlds apart from his heyday as part of the legendary Brat Pack, which famously included Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy.

This group of young stars captivated audiences with their standout performances in timeless coming-of-age classics like “The Breakfast Club” and “St. Elmo’s Fire,” where this actor was a significant presence.

Sporting a black overcoat paired with camouflage pants, the former teen idol finished off his eclectic outfit with a retro motorcycle helmet and a backpack slung casually over one shoulder.

However, it was his long, gray beard and rugged facial hair that left fans doing a double-take, wondering if this was indeed the same actor who once portrayed Brooke Shields’s clean-cut boss in “Suddenly Susan.”

So, can you guess which 80s bad boy looks completely unrecognizable now?

If you guessed Judd Nelson, you’re absolutely spot on!

Born November 28, 1959, in Portland, Maine, Nelson’s Hollywood career took off with Making the Grade (1984), but it was his role as rebel John Bender in The Breakfast Club that made him a household name.

It’s long been rumored that Nelson almost got fired from The Breakfast Club due to his intense commitment to method acting.

According to reports, he took his role as the rebellious Bender so seriously that he stayed in character even when the cameras weren’t rolling, which apparently rubbed director John Hughes the wrong way.

In fact, Hughes was said to have considered letting Nelson go due to his behavior on set.

However, the rest of the cast, who had formed a close bond during filming, reportedly rallied behind Nelson, urging Hughes to keep him in the movie.

Hughes ultimately decided to keep the controversial actor, and Nelson’s portrayal of John Bender went on to become one of his most iconic performances.

Following this success, Nelson solidified his place in 80s pop culture with memorable roles in St Elmo’s Fire (1985), where he played the charming but conflicted Alec, and Blue City (1986), further establishing himself as one of the decade’s top stars.

He also voiced the character Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime in The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

In the late 80s and early 90s, Nelson expanded his range with roles in films like New Jack City (1991), where he played a tough cop, and the slapstick comedy Airheads (1994), showing that he could evolve beyond his heartthrob status.

Television also saw a resurgence for Nelson, particularly with his standout role as Jack Richmond, the tough but loveable boss in the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan (1996-1999).

The role marked a significant turning point in Nelson’s career as he shifted from leading man in teen films to a more established TV actor.

By the 2000s, Nelson moved into a range of TV and direct-to-video projects.

He made appearances on hit shows like Psych and Two and a Half Men, while also reprising his voice role as Hot Rod in the animated Transformers series.

His career didn’t slow down, as he made memorable appearances in cult favorites like The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009), and continued to work steadily in both film and TV, never quite leaving the public eye.

In his personal life, the actor remains quite private.

However, he has been romantically linked to several women in the entertainment industry, including a 1993 engagement to actress Shannen Doherty, as well as relationships with talent manager Loree Rodkin and model Kelly Stafford.

Two Individuals Arrested for Alleged Antisemitic Arson Attempt at North London Synagogue Involving Petrol Bombs

0

Authorities have apprehended a woman and a man in relation to the ‘antisemitic’ attempted arson at a synagogue in North London.

Masked individuals, suspected of wielding petrol bombs, were caught on CCTV targeting Finchley Reform Synagogue on Fallow Court Avenue in North Finchley last night.

This afternoon, a 47-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man were detained in the Watford area, both facing charges of arson with intent to endanger life.

The authorities are treating this incident as an antisemitic hate crime. It follows a recent attack on March 23, when four Hatzola ambulances were set ablaze outside another synagogue in nearby Golders Green.

Police reported that CCTV footage captured two individuals, clad in dark attire and balaclavas, entering the synagogue grounds at 12:09 a.m. today.

They then put two glass bottles next to the synagogue’s windows and threw a brick at the building. One of the bottles, which contained a substance suspected to be petrol, was smashed by the brick.

Neither of the bottles was ignited and there were no injuries reported. The building was left undamaged and the suspects fled the scene.

The attack was reported to the police at about 8.30am this morning by a member of synagogue staff.

Police arrested the woman at 4.47pm this afternoon and the man at 7.15pm in connection with the attack and they remain in police custody.

Scotland Yard has said that last month’s ambulance arson attack does not appear to be linked to this incident.

The firebombing caused gas canisters in the ambulances, from Hatzola, a volunteer-led service, to explode.

Three men – Hamza Iqbal, 20, Rehan Khan, 19, and a 17-year-old boy, were charged with arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered.

Sarah Sackman, MP for Finchley and Golders Green, branded last night’s attack as ‘shocking’ – adding the Jewish community should be ‘free to go about their lives without fear’.

‘This morning, I became aware of an attempted arson attack at Finchley Reform Synagogue overnight. Thankfully, no one has been hurt. I have been at the synagogue, supporting local residents and community leaders,’ she said.

‘This shocking attempt to harm a local synagogue follows a series of alarming attacks on the Jewish community in Finchley and Golders Green.

‘As your local MP, and as a member of the community, I refuse to allow this to become the “new normal”. British Jews must be free to go about their lives without fear – whether taking their children to nursery or attending synagogue. We do not want to live behind ever higher walls.’

She added: ‘I thank the CST and Metropolitan Police for their quick and effective response. I will continue to raise the issues of antisemitism and security at the highest levels in Government to protect our community.’

The incident is being investigated by detectives from the Met’s North West Area Command Unit, with support from specialist detectives from Counter Terrorism Policing London.

Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, who leads policing in the area, commented on the arrest: ‘I hope the swift action by officers today to identify and arrest two people provides some reassurance and demonstrates how seriously we take attacks of this nature.

‘However, we understand the significant concern the Jewish community will feel at another incident so soon after the arson attack on four ambulances in Golders Green.

Four Hatzola ambulances were firebombed in nearby Golders Green on March 23

Four Hatzola ambulances were firebombed in nearby Golders Green on March 23

‘There is no suggestion the matter in Finchley and the incident in Golders Green, for which three people have been charged, are linked.

‘Our increased patrols in the Finchley area continue, and I would ask that anyone with concerns speaks to my officers.’

Cantor Zöe Jacobs, on behalf of the senior clergy of Finchley Reform Synagogue, said: ‘FRS is a proud, progressive and welcoming space for all. We not only hold Jewish services and celebrations, but within our community we host a nursery, a homeless shelter, and are a safe place for refugees to gather.

‘Last night, two men tried to attack our Synagogue and were unsuccessful.

‘This is clearly an attempt to intimidate the British Jewish community, but we will not be deterred by these cowardly acts. Instead, we will continue to prioritise building bridges across the wider Barnet community.

‘At this time, and as always, our community is being incredibly well supported by the police, the government, CST and all of our key partners.’

Democrats and Advocates Voice Concerns Over Rep. Spanberger’s Proposed Revisions to Retail Marijuana Legislation

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Governor Abigail Spanberger is advocating for significant amendments to legislation passed by Virginia’s Democratic-led General Assembly, which aims to establish a retail market for recreational marijuana.

One of Spanberger’s key proposals involves delaying the launch of retail marijuana sales from the initially planned January 1, 2027, to July 1, 2027.

“My objective is to ensure that there is clear guidance in both the implementation process and the final retail market we establish,” Spanberger told 8News.

Additionally, Spanberger suggests decreasing the initial number of retail outlets from 350 to 200. She is also pushing for stricter penalties for public marijuana consumption and proposes making it a Class 2 felony, with a life imprisonment penalty, for transporting 50 pounds or more of marijuana into Virginia with the intent to sell or distribute.

“I’ve engaged in extensive discussions with governors and officials from states with legalized recreational cannabis markets,” Spanberger remarked. “Every single one advised making sure to get it right the first time and to avoid rushing, as unexpected issues are bound to arise.”

However, advocates and the legislation’s authors don’t seem to be on board with Spanberger’s changes.

“No matter what the amount is, there should be no marijuana crime alone that puts somebody in prison for life,” Chelsea Higgs Wise, Executive Director of Marijuana Justice, told 8News.

In a statement, Senator Lashrecse Aird (D-Henrico), who wrote the Senate version of the two identical bills, said in part, “The Governor’s Substitute represents a significant departure from the framework passed by the General Assembly, raising serious concerns about fairness, access and public safety.”

“The proposal creates a less accessible legal marketplace,” said Delegate Paul Krizek (D-Fairfax), who wrote the House version of the bill.

When the General Assembly returns to Richmond next week, they’ll have the option of either accepting or rejecting Governor Spanberger’s proposed changes.

Ben Stokes Opens Up About Surviving a Devastating Cricket Injury That Required Major Surgery

0

Ben Stokes expressed his relief at being “lucky” to survive after a cricket ball struck and fractured his cheekbone during a practice session at Durham in February.

The England Test team leader had to undergo extensive facial surgery following the incident, which has postponed his participation in county cricket until next month.

“It was quite a frightening ordeal,” Stokes shared with the ECB website. “I took a direct hit to the face. Had it been a couple of inches off, I might not be here for this interview had I not turned my head slightly.”

“It was quite a scene, but I’ve managed to escape rather fortunately. I’m grateful to still be around and that everything’s fine,” he added.

Initially, Stokes aimed to play in half of Durham’s first six County Championship matches. However, after consulting with the surgeon who repaired his fractured cheekbone, he adjusted his expectations to participate in just two games.

This means he is set to return to action for Durham against Worcestershire and Kent in the first half of May, before the first Test against New Zealand on June 4, and may also appear for England Lions against South Africa A at Arundel on May 22.

Durham head coach Ryan Campbell told Daily Mail Sport last month: ‘He was ready to go. His aim was to play round one and then sort of work his schedule out after that.

‘There was no way he was going to play six games, for instance, but three of the six was what we were looking at. Unfortunately, it is not to be.

‘He wants to get up and running because they haven’t played since the fifth Test in Sydney, so it was a rare opportunity for him to play some decent cricket with us.’

Stokes limped out of the 4-1 defeat to Australia with an adductor injury suffered on the penultimate day of the series, and was then set back further when he was struck in the face by a drive from teenager Robbie Bowman at an academy net session.

Campbell said ‘the specialists have been very clear with what’s going on and that definitely needs to heal before he can have the confidence to run in and bowl at batters,’ but even playing as a batsman was a no-go because of the threat of being struck in the face while fielding.

Meanwhile Stokes has also admitted he became ‘consumed’ by the Ashes following England’s harrowing 4–1 defeat, but insists his passion proves he is still committed to the Test captaincy.

Stokes said he never contemplated stepping down after the tour of Australia, but did say he was concerned by the fact that he couldn’t get the trip out of his mind.

‘I was getting a bit worried initially, because I just couldn’t stop thinking about it,’ he said. ‘I couldn’t stop thinking about Australia, and I couldn’t stop thinking about the Test summer coming up. Genuinely, it just completely and utterly consumed me.

‘I would switch off from it for about half an hour, and then I’d get my iPad out and start writing down notes and all this kind of stuff. I’d never experienced that before. I thought I had gone into those places before, but after Australia, my gosh, it was pretty extreme.’

Stokes told the ECB website that he decided to turn his mental agitation into a positive.

‘The fact that I am so consumed by trying to make sure that we do things in the future to potentially stop a series like Australia happening again – to me that’s positive and proves how much I still want to do this, how much I’m still eager to do the role as England captain and be part of English cricket going forward,’ he said.

‘Whereas if I got back and just completely shut myself away from it, and maybe didn’t pay any interest, and just see what happens and let other people make decisions for me probably – probably subconsciously that’s me going “I don’t really want this”.

‘But the fact that I was how I was for the first week or two after Australia, really proved that I’m proper in this still.’

Drama Heats Up: Britani Batemen and Bronwyn Newport Face Off on ‘RHOSLC

Real Housewives of Salt Lake City is in the midst of filming its highly anticipated seventh season.

EXCLUSIVE: Britani Batemen and Bronwyn Newport Are Feuding on New Season of ‘RHOSLC’

An exclusive tip-off to Reality Blurb has unveiled some juicy drama unfolding during production.

An insider revealed that “‘Friend of’ cast member Britani Bateman was prompted to stir things up with full-time housewife Bronwyn Newport.”

“The producers wanted Britani to confront Bronwyn,” the source explained, “and she certainly delivered on that front.”

“Production wanted Britani to go after Bronwyn,” they elaborated. “And she did.”

The drama surrounding the pair occurred “weeks ago,” according to the insider; however, they were not able to provide details on what it was that Britani went after Bronwyn over.

Aside from the drama between them, fans are in for an emotional season, as star Mary Cosby‘s son, Robert Cosby Jr., passed away in February.

Following the news of Robert Jr.’s death, Mary released a heartbreaking statement on Instagram.

“Our beloved son Robert Jr. has been called home to the Lord,” she said at the time. “Though our hearts ache, we take comfort in God’s promise and in knowing he is finally at peace. We are grateful for your prayers and trust in the Lord to carry us through this time of sorrow.”

She captioned her post with the hashtags, “#Godfirst #love #❤️.”

While Robert Jr. had struggled with substance abuse issues for some time, when the season six reunion aired, he was incarcerated.

Mary admitted this was a bit of a relief, sharing she knew he was somewhere he “wasn’t using” drugs.

“At some point, I have to step back so that he can learn and he can make his own decisions, and unfortunately, he’s learning the hard way,” she explained at the time. “But I’m OK with it.”

“It’s just, you don’t want to see your kid suffer, but I know it’s good,” she elaborated. “And I’d rather him be there than dead, you know?”

Aside from Mary’s devastating situation, fans will also see Bronwyn dealing with the fallout of her separation from her husband, Todd Bradley, which she discussed on the reunion.

“After thoughtful consideration, Bronwyn Newport and Todd Bradley have separated,” a rep confirmed to PEOPLE in a December 12 statement. “This was a mutual decision made with care and respect for one another. They ask for privacy during this time.”

While Bronwyn has moved on and is dating boyfriend Brandon Good, she talked with Kelly Ripa about her future with Todd. She shared she’d love for them to “be together,” but she currently needs “space.”

“Todd and I are tricky. We’ve been together for a long time,” Bronwyn stated on the February 11 episode of SiriusXM’s Let’s Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa podcast, via Us Weekly. “I do really love Todd.”

“ Todd and I are separated, and it’s very difficult because our lives are so intertwined and so intermeshed after all this time together,” she said later on the episode. “And I hear him saying to me, since I’ve asked for that separation, that he wants to understand and he wants to do different[ly] and he wants to make it right, and there is a huge part of me that wants that for him.”

“I do want us to be together,” she added. “I’d love to just smooth it over and move forward. There’s also a part of me that feels like some things you shouldn’t have to explain, some things you shouldn’t have to ask for. Some things should be, like, innately understood in such a close relationship.”

She also shared she’s being “very difficult” for Todd as she doesn’t know what she wants “next.”

“I think I just want some space and some time to think about it … He would like to go back to how close and happy we were, and he’s willing to make some changes to get there … But I feel like as a 40-year-old woman, that I don’t wanna have to tell someone how to fix things with me,” she concluded.

Massive Fire Engulfs Major Australian Oil Refinery, Firefighters Strive to Control Blaze

0

Firefighters in Victoria are currently tackling a major fire that erupted at one of the only two oil refineries still in operation across Australia.

The blaze ignited late Wednesday night, around 11 p.m., at the Viva Energy refinery located in Geelong, as reported by Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV).

FRV responded swiftly to numerous calls from the public, who reported hearing explosions at the site.

As of Thursday morning, an update on the VicEmergency website indicated that while firefighters continue to combat the flames, there is no immediate danger to the public.

However, the full extent of the damage inflicted on the refinery remains uncertain at this time.

According to the company’s website, the refinery can process up to 120,000 barrels of oil a day and supplies 10 per cent of Australia’s fuel.

It is one of two operating refineries in Australia, with the other in Lytton, Queensland.

Australia has faced fuel security concerns since Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz after it was struck by the United States and Israel.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese last month announced the excise on ‌fuel and diesel would be halved in response to surging prices.

IDF Conducts Potent Airstrike Against Hezbollah, Surpassing Damage of 2024 Pager Explosions

0

In a bold move, Israel has intensified its military campaign against Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, choosing this time to target the group’s members and leaders directly. This strategic shift by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) signifies a departure from previous operations that primarily focused on dismantling weapons caches and logistical networks. The recent assault is reported to have inflicted more significant damage than the acclaimed 2024 pager attacks.

Targeting the leadership could be seen as a shrewd tactic. In organizations like Hezbollah, leaders often embody the strategic and intellectual core, while the rank-and-file members serve as expendable assets. Despotic leaders frequently eliminate potential threats from within, preferring to keep a tight grip on power by surrounding themselves with less capable followers. Hence, by striking at the leadership, Israel likely maximized its impact.

What stands out, however, is an intriguing observation:

While the latest offensive may have effectively neutralized key Hezbollah figures, the psychological impact of the 2024 pager attacks arguably looms larger in the collective memory. The resonance of such operations often transcends their immediate tactical success, leaving enduring effects on the morale and operational capacity of groups like Hezbollah.

Nearly simultaneously, explosions tore through Beirut, Lebanon, the Beqaa Valley and southern Lebanon as roughly 50 Israeli aircraft struck more than 100 Hezbollah targets.

The targets were not rocket launchers or weapons depots, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), but the nerve centers of the organization — command rooms, intelligence headquarters and offices where Hezbollah commanders planned the next stage of the fight.

Going for the leadership isn’t the worst tactic in the world, especially when you consider that the leadership in organizations like this tends to be the only members with any brains to speak of; most of the run-of-the-mill jihadis are pretty much the dictionary definition of useful idiots. Also, despotic rulers tend not to like having people around who have much of anything in the way of gray matter, as your smarter goblins may harbor notions of taking over. So Israel probably got a lot of bang for their buck on this deal.

But here’s the interesting statement:

The strike drew a comparison to the “beeper” operation in September 2024, when thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah operatives exploded almost simultaneously across Lebanon and Syria in an operation widely attributed to Israel.

The blasts killed more than 40 people and wounded roughly 4,000, according to Lebanese authorities, while Hezbollah later acknowledged that about 1,500 fighters were taken out of action. The operation shattered Hezbollah’s communications network and became the benchmark in Israel for a strike that fundamentally changed the battlefield.

Now, this recent attack may have reduced more Hezbollah leaders to ambient temperature, but there can be little doubt that the pager attack had a greater psychological impact.

On Wednesday, the two suspects, Emir Balat, aged 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, aged 19, pleaded not guilty to the federal charges against them. The pair allegedly traveled from Pennsylvania to New York City with the intention of launching this attack.

The incident took place on March 7, when the suspects purportedly tossed live explosive devices during a protest outside the residence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Fortunately, the bombs failed to detonate, and no injuries were reported.

During their court appearance, Balat and Kayumi faced eight charges, which include conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist group and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. Both firmly denied the allegations by entering not guilty pleas.

Appearing in federal court Wednesday, both Balat and Kayumi pleaded not guilty to eight charges, including conspiracy to provide material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.

Balat and Kayumi appeared in court wearing beige prison jumpsuits and shackles and remained motionless as they responded to the judge regarding the next steps in their case.

During the arraignment, Kayumi’s lawyers pointed to his client’s family members, who were seated in the courtroom and came to show their support.

Upon being referenced, an older man in the group grew emotional and proceeded to wipe away tears.

Prosecutors told the judge they are continuing to comb through the “voluminous” discovery in the case, and asked to be granted an additional three weeks to review evidence.

Authorities are also still working to gather information from multiple electronic devices seized from the pair’s vehicle and their respective homes.

“As alleged, just weeks ago, Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi carried out a terrorist attack on the streets of New York,” U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jay Clayton previously said in a statement. “They sought to murder multiple innocent victims in the name of ISIS. The brave women and men of the NYPD responded immediately, and Balat and Kayumi were arrested on site.”

“Since their attack, our partners at the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force have uncovered evidence revealing the alleged meticulous planning by the defendants in their attack, including a notebook with detailed attack plans and a storage unit containing explosive residue and bomb-making materials,” he added.

As Kayumi was being arrested, an individual from the surrounding crowd asked him why he carried out the alleged attack, to which he replied, “ISIS,” according to authorities.

Prosecutors allege that while speaking to law enforcement, Balat said he hoped the planned attack would be “bigger than the Boston Marathon bombing.”

Dashcam video recorded as the pair were traveling to New York also allegedly captured their discussions surrounding the planning of the attempted attack, according to the indictment.

“What do you think? Are they going to remove the airplanes for us … over New York? Are they going to stop them? If we do the attack and the bombs go off and everything?” Balat asked.

“Just can’t wait for that bomb to go off and his freaking head, his body to get split in half bro, dead,” he added.

“All I know is I want to start terror, bro,” Kayumi allegedly replied, adding, “I want to petrify these people.”

A forensic analysis of the two devices determined that both contained explosives, according to the indictment.

If convicted, both Balat and Kayumi face the possibility of life in prison.

The pair are due back in court on June 16.
