Nancy Guthrie Kidnapping Case: Police Provide Update as Investigation Nears Nine Months

0

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Friday that investigators are continuing to work with the Nancy Guthrie Task Force on DNA analysis as they pursue new leads in the missing-person case.

“Earlier this month, investigators traveled to Florida to meet with lab scientists to see what more could be done to advance this case,” the department said in a post on X. “A number of ideas were discussed, and we continue to work with all our partners to solve this case.”

The agency urged the public to report any information, emphasizing that no tip is insignificant.

“Even the smallest piece of information could be critical to this investigation,” the department said.

Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC journalist Savannah Guthrie, was kidnapped from her Tucson, Arizona, home on Feb. 1.

The 84-year-old was last seen shortly before 10 p.m. on Jan. 31, after a relative dropped her off at her home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills neighborhood.

Despite footage from Guthrie’s Ring doorbell showing a masked man, authorities have not identified a suspect or person of interest in her disappearance.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed in the days after Guthrie vanished that she had been taken. During a news briefing, he said, “She did not leave on her own. We know that.”

Authorities released two ransom notes tied to Guthrie’s kidnapping in July.

Here’s the latest on Savannah Guthrie’s missing mom Nancy Guthrie

The first note, sent Feb. 2, said Guthrie was unharmed and demanded $4 million in cryptocurrency for her release.

A second note, sent four days later on Feb. 6, claimed that Guthrie had died soon after being kidnapped.

When the ransom notes were made public in late July, authorities said they featured a distinctive writing style. They asked anyone who recognized the patterns to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department or the FBI.

Late last month, investigators said they had learned of a possible new ransom note connected to Guthrie’s disappearance.

“The PCSD/FBI Guthrie Task Force was recently made aware of a new possible ransom note related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation,” the sheriff’s department said in a late-September post on X.

“Investigators are also aware of social media comments regarding the note and are looking further into the information to determine its credibility.”

Anyone with information should call 1-800-CALL-FBI. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact 520-88-CRIME.

US Attorney General Todd Blanche Personally Enters Nevada Voting Fraud Cases After Broader Trump Administration Claims Falter

As October draws to a close and the nation approaches its second midterm election under President Donald Trump, Attorney General Todd Blanche has taken a personal role in four small-scale voter fraud prosecutions in Nevada, according to federal court records.

Between Oct. 23 and Oct. 29, Jullie Ann Sumalinog Moore, Khalida Safi, Moneir Elzobier Ali Yousif and Mlebinge Riziki Ramadhani were each charged with a misdemeanor count of voting by an alien under 18 U.S.C. §611, according to federal court filings.

The allegations, each filed as a separate case, were first reported by All Rise News Editor-in-Chief Adam Klasfeld.

Each charging document carries an unusual signature: Attorney General Todd Blanche, once President Trump’s personal attorney, is listed at the top.

Blanche’s direct involvement may reflect the administration’s still-evolving approach to leading Justice Department posts, including its uncertain strategy for proceeding without Senate confirmation.

Nevada, however, may present a separate explanation.

The high-profile voter fraud cases arrive shortly after a damaging setback for the Trump administration’s broader claims about noncitizen voting.

Earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Security said Nevada’s voter rolls included roughly 16,000 noncitizens. Officials later reduced that figure to 185 alleged noncitizens over the summer. Nevada authorities ultimately concluded that all 185 were citizens.

Best Celebrity Couple Halloween Costumes That Delivered Double the Treat

It’s heartwarming that Heidi Klum found a husband who shares her passion for Halloween. In 2018, she and Tom Kaulitz went undercover as Fiona and Shrek, but that costume now seems downright simple compared with their 2024 transformation into E.T.—complete with the famous “phone home” look—for Klum’s annual Halloween party.

“It took one year to get ready,” the Project Runway host told E! News at the event. On the day of the party, she added, “We started at 10 a.m. this morning. We just got ready, we just came down.”

By comparison, their costumes the previous year—Klum as Medusa and Kaulitz as the warrior she had turned to stone—were relatively low-key. That transformation required five months of planning and 10 hours of work on the day itself.

“This year wasn’t that difficult,” Kaulitz told E! at the party. Klum, however, revealed that “about 15 people” helped create and hand-paint their elaborate costumes, praising the team for doing “a fantastic job.”

The couple has already offered a glimpse of what they’re preparing for this year—and the early hints look gross. In the best possible Halloween way, of course.

While you wait for nightfall, and perhaps search for some last-minute costume inspiration, take a look at the best celebrity couple Halloween costumes of all time:

£71bn Stealth Tax Bonanza: Why Workers Will Pay More

0

A stealth increase in income tax is expected to raise an extra £71billion for the Treasury by 2030-31, according to economists.

Nearly seven million more people will pay income tax than would have done if thresholds had continued to rise with inflation after the freeze was introduced five years ago.

A further six million taxpayers are expected to be pushed into the higher and additional-rate bands as a result of the policy, analysis shared with the Daily Mail found.

Income tax thresholds have been frozen since 2021-22, and former Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced last year that the freeze would remain in place until 2030-31.

As wages rise, the policy means more people are paying income tax, while existing taxpayers can face larger bills on their earnings.

Although Prime Minister Andy Burnham had previously indicated that the issue could be reviewed, Chancellor John Healey left the freeze unchanged in Wednesday’s Budget.

An analysis of Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) figures by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) estimates that the measure will generate an additional £71billion in tax revenue.

The IFS said yesterday: ‘Compared with thresholds rising in line with inflation from 2021-22, the OBR forecast shows that by 2030-31 an additional 6.75million people will be paying income tax because of the freezes. A further 6.03million will be brought into the higher and additional rates, generating an extra £71billion in tax revenue.’

Chancellor John Healey did not change the freeze in his latest Budget, despite previous suggestions that the policy could be reconsidered

Chancellor John Healey left the tax threshold freeze unchanged in his latest Budget, despite earlier suggestions that the policy might be reconsidered

Labour was accused on Friday of ‘hiking taxes by stealth’. Tory Treasury spokesman Gareth Davies said: ‘Labour is making as many people as possible pay as much tax as possible, even as families face rising costs at the checkout and soaring energy bills.

‘The Government would rather squeeze working people dry than reduce the ballooning welfare bill that funds the lifestyles of people who choose not to work.

‘Labour’s claims about providing “breathing space” are simply smoke and mirrors. In reality, it is hiking taxes by stealth and pushing the tax burden to a record high.’

Mr Davies added: ‘The Conservatives are the only party that will cut the welfare bill and reduce taxes, support hard work and aspiration, and allow people to keep more of what they earn.’

Treasury sources said the Government was raising money in a ‘targeted way’, rather than increasing the main taxes charged on people’s earnings.

The freezing of tax thresholds creates what is known as ‘fiscal drag’—a process in which pay rises pull people into higher tax bands.

Before 2021, income tax thresholds were generally increased each year in line with inflation. In that year’s Budget, then-Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that they would be frozen from April 2022 until 2026.

Successive governments have since extended the freeze. While Mr Healey did not refer to it in his Budget, accompanying documents confirm that it will continue until 2031.

Every taxpayer receives a personal allowance of £12,570, meaning income below that level is not taxed. Earnings from £12,571 to £50,270 are taxed at the basic rate of 20 per cent.

Income between £50,271 and £125,140 is subject to the higher rate of 40 per cent, while earnings above £125,140 are taxed at the additional rate of 45 per cent.

Savings and property income can also be subject to additional charges.

The OBR said that had the personal allowance increased in line with inflation since 2021 and until 2030-31, it would be £4,900 higher – with the threshold for the higher rate to kick in £20,100 higher.

It added that the freezes mean the proportion of taxpayers paying either higher or additional rate tax will have increased from 15 per cent in 2021-22 to 24 per cent in 2030-31.

The freezing of tax thresholds affects lower and middle earners the most, with the impact for a basic rate taxpayer the equivalent of a 4 per cent tax increase.

Between 2021 and next year, basic rate taxpayers will have paid £700 more in tax than if thresholds had gone up in line with inflation, analysis by AJ Bell suggests. By the time the freeze ends in 2031, that figure will have risen to around £960.

The situation is even worse for the higher rate taxpayers, who will have paid as much as £3,500 in extra tax by next year.

Inside Adrian Portelli’s New Melbourne Supermarket

0

Surrounded by industrial lots and factory buildings, billionaire Adrian Portelli’s latest venture stands out as an unlikely beacon: a brightly branded supermarket.

Portelli, whose profile has been built on publicity stunts and cash giveaways, has opened the LMCT+-branded store in Deer Park, about 25km west of Melbourne. The area is known for vacant industrial land and a notorious women’s prison.

Called LMCT+ Market, the business is being promoted as a challenger to Coles and Woolworths. It promises savings of up to 10 per cent on many products as Australians continue to grapple with the rising cost of living.

‘It’s day one of the supermarket and it’s fair to say that I’m bored. I’m coming in absolutely swinging, it’s time to stop playing games,’ Portelli said in a video.

The Daily Mail visited the former IGA site, which has been transformed with blue-and-white advertising and a deflated hot-air balloon left over from the grand opening.

Shopping there comes with an unusual condition: customers must scan a membership barcode connected to Portelli’s subscription service before they can enter, creating a markedly different experience from a conventional supermarket.

Customers who had not yet joined could sign up at several kiosks or a staffed service desk near the entrance. A large screen nearby played polished promotional footage featuring Portelli.

Membership costs $99 a year when paid upfront, covering access to the ‘petrol saver’ fuel and market discounts. The top-tier annual ‘elite’ membership costs as much as $999.

The Daily Mail visited the store to see how the groceries compared to Coles and Woolies

The Daily Mail visited the store to compare its grocery prices with Coles and Woolworths

Once the automated gate opened, the Daily Mail entered aisles that looked much like those found in supermarkets across Australia.

Aside from the prominent advertisements for Portelli’s subscription service on the entrance kiosks, there was little to set the store apart from its established rivals.

The compact supermarket was clean and orderly, with well-stocked shelves and fresh produce displayed throughout.

Its range, however, appeared to straddle both value and luxury offerings. Shoppers could find Tim Tams and strawberries for $2.90, alongside Wagyu burgers costing $18 per patty and imported Greek olive oil priced at $42.

That raises the key question for everyday shoppers: how competitive is LMCT+ Market when it comes to replacing regular pantry staples?

Bread: A Just Wholemeal Loaf was priced at $3.70 at LMCT+, compared with $4 at both Coles and Woolworths, according to their websites.

Milk: A two-litre bottle of The Milk Guys Farm Fresh Full Cream Milk cost $3.20 at LMCT+. Coles and Woolworths do not list that brand online, but comparable products were more expensive: Coles had Devondale Full Cream Milk on special for $4.20, while Woolworths listed a two-litre Dairy Farmers Full Cream Milk special at the same price.

Eggs: A 12-pack of Sunrise Eggs Free Range XL cost $5.75 at LMCT+, compared with $7.40 at Coles. Woolworths does not stock Sunrise, but sells a similar 12-pack of Open Range XL eggs for $7.40.

Some items proved to be cheaper than Coles and Woolies, while others were roughly the same

Beef: Premium mince, wrapped in air-tight 1kg packages at LMCT+ costs roughly $13, a small discount compared to the retail giants which offered their own brand of 1kg beef mince for $15 each.

Chicken: About 567g of breast fillets cost $8.51 at Portelli’s store, compared to Coles RSPCA Approved Chicken Breast Fillets, sold for $8.70 for approximately 600g, and Woolworths RSPCA Approved Chicken Breast Fillets weighing 650g costing $9.50.

Bananas: A kilogram at LMCT+ cost $3.99, while Coles sells a bananas mini pack of 750g at $4.90. Woolworths sells Cavendish bananas at $0.81 each, so for four bananas a customer would pay $3.24.

In short, savings are small and dependent on the deals of the day.

LMCT+ appeared to have almost no own brand items – a significant selling point of Coles and Woolworths – apart from the independently bagged mince or 600ml bottles of ‘artesian spring water’ for $1.99.

The supermarket opened earlier this month and, on a first visit on October 15, staff vastly outnumbered customers. During a second trip on October 25, the numbers were equal.

‘It’s been like this all day. I was surprised when I started on Tuesday that it’s not as busy as I thought it might be,’ a shop worker told the Daily Mail as only a handful of customers moved through the aisles.

He said an ‘obstacle’ to attracting people was the membership requirement, with some shoppers ‘unwilling’ to sign up.

‘I think the prices are pretty good, but we need more variety,’ he added.

At the rear of the supermarket, the dingy entrance to the store’s warehouse is visible from the pothole-ridden road.

Three dumpsters were overflowing with cardboard and rubbish, while used crates and pallet bases sat outside a loading dock.

Portelli is right to go after the big two supermarkets but, given the price comparisons to Coles and Woolworths, he may not have come out ‘swinging’.

He has acknowledged competing with the big two will be a ‘challenge’ due to their significantly greater buying power.

He also told followers some Coles and Woolworths prices would be ‘difficult to beat’ given the thousands of products stocked across their networks compared with his single supermarket.

Portelli remains confident his supermarket model will push ahead with a roll-out of his chain across Victoria.

Membership for the supermarket is also linked to Portelli’s LMCT+ service station discounted petrol deal.

California Spirit Halloween Shooting Kills 1, Injures 6

A shooting at a Spirit Halloween store in the Bay Area on Halloween Eve left one person dead and six others injured.

The gunfire erupted at approximately 8:30 p.m. Friday inside the seasonal store at Solano Town Center mall in Fairfield, California, Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said at a news conference.

One victim died at the scene. The six injured people were transported to a hospital, where three remained in critical condition.

Authorities have not released a description of the suspected shooter or confirmed whether more than one person may have been involved.

Police have also not disclosed a possible motive for the Fairfield shooting.

“This is still a very active crime scene. Detectives are speaking with witnesses and diligently working to identify the suspect responsible for this horrific shooting,” police said in a statement.

The store was operating with customers inside when the shots were fired, triggering a frantic rush as shoppers ran for safety.

One witness told KCRA that his wife heard gunfire before seeing people flee, scream and cry. “Well, she just told me she heard some shots and the people running, yelling and crying already,” he said.

The store was open and filled with customers when the shooting began, sending shoppers fleeing for their lives.

According to the witness, his wife heard approximately seven shots before people in the store began racing away from the danger.

The temporary Spirit Halloween shop occupies the former Best Buy location inside the mall, which features roughly 130 stores.

The shooting at the Fairfield Halloween store occurred just hours after a separate fatal shooting at a Spirit Halloween location in Michigan.

The Madison Heights Police Department said an unidentified 21-year-old victim was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds at the store shortly after 2 p.m.

A second 21-year-old, who police suspect in the killing, was assaulted by bystanders and taken to a hospital while in police custody.

2026’s Rattiest U.S. Cities, According to Orkin

0

Orkin has published its 2026 ranking of the U.S. cities with the highest rodent activity. Find out whether your city appears on the list.

WASHINGTON — Los Angeles has held on to the top spot in Orkin’s 2026 list of the “rattiest” cities in the United States, remaining No. 1 for a second consecutive year.

The Atlanta-based pest control company said in a news release that it compiled the ranking by tracking new residential rodent treatments recorded between Aug. 9, 2025, and Aug. 9, 2026. The data provides a snapshot of where rat and mice treatment activity was highest across the country.

After Los Angeles, the leading cities were Chicago, New York City, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

Albuquerque, New Mexico, posted the largest increase, climbing 12 places to No. 31. Hartford, Connecticut, saw the steepest drop, sliding 12 spots to No. 17.

“There’s no single type of city or climate that’s immune to rodent pressure,” Dr. Shannon Sked, Orkin’s national technical director, said in the release. “Rats and mice are highly adaptable and can thrive in communities across the country wherever they can find food, water and shelter. That’s why prevention and early detection are important for homeowners, regardless of where they live.”

Orkin’s top ‘rattiest’ cities list for 2026

If left unchecked, rats and mice can damage buildings and spread disease. Rodent populations can also grow quickly, turning a minor issue into a serious infestation in a short period of time.

Homeowners can help prevent rodents by inspecting a home’s exterior for small openings and sealing them promptly. Fixing leaks can remove potential water sources, while properly maintaining trash containers and replacing damaged ones can help limit access to food.

Heidi Klum Marks Crazy Pizza Anniversary With Leni, Henry, Johan

Heidi Klum attended Crazy Pizza’s third-anniversary celebration in New York City on Thursday, October 29, with three of her four children by her side.

The 53-year-old supermodel was joined at the restaurant’s SoHo location by daughter Leni, 22, and sons Henry, 21, and Johan, 19.

For the evening, Heidi turned heads in an orange ruffled Lever Couture minidress styled with black thigh-high boots. Leni wore a black halter top with coordinating trousers, while Henry chose a red-and-black zip-up jacket and dark pants. Johan kept things relaxed in a black T-shirt and baggy jeans.

Heidi teamed up with Leni’s biological father, Italian businessman Flavio Briatore, to bring the Crazy Pizza brand to New York. The SoHo outpost opened in November 2024, marking the restaurant chain’s first location in the United States.

Heidi’s youngest daughter, 17-year-old Lou, was not present at Thursday’s event. She had recently enjoyed some private one-on-one time with her mother in Paris.

On October 3, Lou Samuel joined Heidi at her first Paris Fashion Week show. The mother-daughter duo watched Vivienne Westwood’s Spring/Summer 2027 presentation before attending the BoF500 Gala.

Heidi called the Paris fashion trip an early birthday gift for Lou, who turned 17 on October 9. She selected the Vivienne Westwood show because of her longstanding connection to the fashion house and its creative director, Andreas Kronthaler. Heidi had walked in one of the designer’s runway shows the previous year.

Ahead of the presentation, Lou spoke with Vogue about the significance of attending a major fashion event for the first time.

“I can somehow express myself more and officially show who I am,” she told the magazine.

She also acknowledged that stepping into the fashion spotlight came with plenty of nerves.

“To be honest, I’m totally nervous because it’s my first time,” Lou said.

Heidi shares Henry, Johan and Lou with her former husband, singer Seal, who adopted Leni during their marriage.
