Reclaim Leg Strength After 65: The Chair Routine Transforming Lives in Just 10 Minutes

0

Feeling unsteady on your feet after 65? This quick and effective 10-minute chair routine helps you regain your leg strength effortlessly.

>

The strength in your legs plays an essential role in day-to-day activities as you age. It directly impacts how stable you feel when rising from a chair, your confidence when navigating a curb, and the ease of executing everyday movements. Stronger legs not only enhance these experiences but also contribute to an overall sense of physical capability.

Incorporating a chair routine into your exercise regimen offers a controlled approach to improving leg muscle strength. With the chair’s support, you gain a visible target that encourages you to focus on precise repetition, making workouts feel less overwhelming. Such routines are invaluable for maintaining consistency, ensuring that your exercise habits are sustainable and enjoyable over time.

This straightforward 10-minute session involves just two exercises yet covers a comprehensive range of leg movements. The chair sit-to-stand exercise mirrors the actions of rising from a seat, enhancing those muscles. Meanwhile, the chair-supported reverse lunge introduces single-leg exercises that independently target strength and stability in each leg.

As you perform each cycle, keep a steady rhythm and embrace each round as an opportunity for practice. This approach encourages the development of stronger legs through precise movements, improved control, and incremental advancements that will gradually become evident in daily tasks.

The 10-Minute Chair Leg Strength Routine

What you need: A sturdy chair and enough space to stand in front of it and step back safely. Choose a chair that stays planted and gives you reliable support. This routine takes 10 minutes and alternates between two chair-supported leg exercises.

The Routine:

  1. Chair Sit-to-Stand: 5 rounds of 40 seconds
  2. Chair-Supported Reverse Lunge: 5 rounds of 40 seconds

Directions

Set a timer for 10 minutes. Perform Chair Sit-to-Stands for 40 seconds, then spend 20 seconds breathing and setting up for reverse lunges. Perform Chair-Supported Reverse Lunges for 40 seconds, then spend 20 seconds returning to the chair and resetting.

Alternate between the two exercises until you complete five rounds of each. Move with control, use the chair as needed for balance, and keep every rep within a range that feels strong. Here’s how to do it.

4 Daily Exercises That Firm Side Fat Faster Than Gym Classes After 60

Chair Sit-to-Stand

The chair sit-to-stand builds leg strength through a movement you already use every day. You practice shifting weight into your feet, standing tall, and lowering back down with control. That makes it useful for the quads and glutes, and it also helps your knees feel more supported during simple daily tasks. The chair gives each rep a clear starting and ending point, which makes progress easier to feel over time.

How to do it:

  1. Sit near the front edge of a sturdy chair.
  2. Place your feet flat on the floor about hip-width apart.
  3. Lean forward slightly so your weight shifts into your feet.
  4. Press through the floor and stand tall.
  5. Slowly lower yourself back toward the chair.
  6. Lightly touch the seat and stand again.

Best Variations: Hands-assisted sit-to-stand, slow-tempo sit-to-stand, sit-to-stand with a pause above the chair.

4 Morning Exercises That Rebuild Lower Back Strength Faster Than Gym Sessions After 60

Chair-Supported Reverse Lunge

The chair-supported reverse lunge gives each leg focused strength work while the chair helps you stay balanced. Stepping backward keeps the movement controlled, and your front leg handles most of the work as you return to standing. This exercise helps rebuild strength through the thighs, glutes, and hips, which can make walking, climbing stairs, and getting around feel more confident. Keep the step small at first, then build the range as the movement feels smoother.

How to do it:

  1. Stand beside a sturdy chair and hold it lightly with one hand.
  2. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart.
  3. Step one foot back.
  4. Bend both knees slightly.
  5. Press through your front foot to return to standing.
  6. Alternate sides with control for the full 40 seconds.

Best Variations: Small step-back lunge, supported split squat, reverse lunge with a pause.

5 Daily Exercises That Restore Stamina Faster Than Cardio After 60

How to Make This Routine Work Better After 65

This routine works best when you treat it as practice, not a test. Ten minutes gives your legs enough work to build strength while keeping the session manageable enough to repeat several times per week. That consistency matters because leg strength after 65 responds well to clean reps, steady effort, and small progressions. The chair helps you stay confident as your legs take on more of the work over time. Keep the pace smooth, use a range of motion you can control, and let the final round feel stronger than the first.

  • Use a sturdy chair: Pick one that stays planted and gives you reliable support.
  • Start with a comfortable range: The sit-to-stand and reverse lunge should feel controlled before you make either move deeper.
  • Keep your hand support light: Hold the chair for balance, then gradually use less help as your confidence improves.
  • Track smoother reps: Progress can mean better control, steadier balance, or fewer pauses between reps.
  • Repeat it consistently: Aim for three to five sessions per week so the routine becomes familiar and easy to stick with.

England Train Derailments: Two Incidents in 48 Hours

LONDON – In a troubling turn of events for the UK’s rail network, a passenger train derailed near London on Friday, the British Transport Police confirmed. This accident marks the second derailment in just two days, following an incident on Thursday where two individuals sustained serious injuries after a train left the tracks.

Emergency responders, including officers, paramedics, and firefighters, rushed to the scene close to Wickford train station in Essex, roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of London. Reports indicated that the train’s rear carriages had derailed. Remarkably, these carriages remained upright, and authorities confirmed that there were no injuries from the incident.

National Rail has acknowledged the situation, stating that they are actively investigating the cause of the derailment. As a result, significant disruptions to train services are anticipated to persist throughout Friday afternoon.

This latest derailment follows closely on the heels of a serious incident involving a London to Eastbourne train, which veered off the tracks near the town of Lewes in southern England less than 24 hours earlier. In that accident, three carriages overturned, critically injuring two passengers and leaving 18 others with minor injuries.

According to the transport police, all passengers from the Lewes derailment were safely evacuated within approximately three hours of the incident.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

According to police reports, a Wisconsin man pinned a woman to her vehicle following her attempt to fend him off using pepper spray.

The man, identified as 33-year-old Vang Yang, targeted the 63-year-old woman in an alleged “road rage incident” that took place in Madison’s northern area on Tuesday morning, police disclosed in a detailed report.

Authorities reported that the altercation erupted around 9:50 a.m. near the intersection of North Sherman Avenue and Northport Drive.

Despite the harrowing encounter, the woman managed to free herself and drive to her workplace, where she contacted law enforcement. Meanwhile, Yang stayed at the location of the incident, the statement revealed.

Dane County court records show that Yang has been charged with felony battery to an elderly person or at-risk adult and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. He was released from the Dane County Jail on Thursday after pleading not guilty and has a court appearance scheduled for Aug. 26.

Global Outrage as Iran Eyed for Influential Human Rights Panel: A Threat to International Integrity?

0

Labeling it “Orwellian,” the head of a U.N. watchdog expressed grave concern over the prospect of Iran’s potential membership on a key United Nations committee. This powerful group helps shape significant policies surrounding human rights, women’s rights, and counterterrorism efforts.

The U.N. General Assembly is scheduled for a decisive vote this November on Iran’s inclusion in the Committee for Programme and Coordination. This committee, composed of 34 member states serving three-year terms, is likely to see the vote as a mere formality, largely expected to succeed.

Though the committee doesn’t directly craft human rights treaties or condemn violations, it holds substantial sway over the administrative execution of human rights initiatives throughout the U.N.’s operations.

Despite Iran’s well-documented record of systematic human rights abuses, aggressive crackdowns on women, extensive surveillance, and lethal suppression of dissent, the U.N. Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) put forth its nomination for Iran in April.

Global bodies also consider Tehran a leading state sponsor of terrorism that funds proxy militant groups, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. In addition, Tehran has attacked neighboring Gulf states in recent months amid a war with the United States.

“It’s the last government in the world that should have any influence,” Hillel Neuer, executive director of Geneva-based UN Watch, told News Media.

“Sadly, at the United Nations today — an organization founded after World War II out of great idealism to bring international peace — it is a case of the lunatics running the asylum,” Neuer added. “You have the Islamic Republic of Iran, a regime that beats, blinds, tortures, rapes, and imprisons women for standing up for their rights or showing a few strands of hair.”

News Media reached out to the Iranian Permanent Mission to the U.N. for comment.

Iran’s appointment would not be unprecedented. The U.N. Human Rights Council’s 47 member states currently include nations with severely criticized human rights records, including China, Cuba, Pakistan and Eritrea.

“The United Nations speaks out in the name of values and principles such as human rights, democracy, freedom, equality and women’s rights,” Neuer said. “The reality is that, sadly, at least half the U.N. is made up of dictatorships.”

Tehran continues to brutally suppress basic freedoms. In July, two men were publicly hanged for participating in nationwide anti-government demonstrations, while hundreds more remain jailed or killed for demanding regime change.

In addition, the U.N. has been accused of bias for heavily criticizing Israel’s military actions in Gaza, while often failing to pass formal resolutions or issue direct condemnations against Hamas.

According to Neuer, the most disappointing aspect of Iran’s potential committee appointment is the willingness of Western democracies to acquiesce.

“The short answer is interests, cynicism, politics, dealmaking, and a culture of ‘go along to get along,'” Neuer said. “If you are the French, Canadian, or German ambassador, you don’t want to pick a fight with dozens of countries or trigger friction with Iran. They would rather simply avoid it.”

Japan Hit by Catastrophic Rainfall: Eight Dead, Thousands Stranded in Unprecedented Downpour

0

A relentless deluge of unprecedented rainwater has transformed the streets east of Tokyo into gushing torrents, claiming the lives of at least eight individuals. This devastating weather event has marooned over 10,000 travelers and commuters throughout Japan’s Chiba prefecture.

Approximately 7,000 people found themselves spending the night inside terminals at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport. Floodwaters had cut off essential rail and road links, coinciding cruelly with one of Japan’s peak holiday travel seasons.

Emergency crews were seen distributing essentials like sleeping bags, water, and food as families made temporary beds in cramped departure halls on Thursday night. The scene was a somber testament to the storm’s impact.

Tragically, among the eight fatalities was a man in his 60s or 70s. He was discovered lifelessly adrift on a submerged road in Ichikawa, a grim reminder of the storm’s fury.

In another heart-wrenching incident, a 66-year-old woman perished after becoming ensnared within her flooded vehicle in Sakura. Other victims were similarly found in inundated cars or lying on flooded streets throughout the prefecture.

The scale of the downpour was extraordinary even by the standards of disaster-prone Japan, with over 14 inches of rain falling within 24 hours in parts of Chiba.

Chiba city recorded 4.5 inches in a single hour on Thursday evening, followed by more than 7 inches over three hours and 11.5 inches in six hours.

All three totals smashed local records dating back to 1966.

“This case was an extremely unusual situation, even by Japan’s historical weather standards,” Chiba Governor Toshihito Kumagai said.

“I have responded to many disasters in the past, but I have never experienced a case like this.”

Almost 230,000 residents were urged to seek safer ground as floodwaters poured through streets, swallowed cars and entered homes.

An early damage count found more than 80 homes had been flooded, but authorities warned the true figure was likely to rise as emergency crews reached more of the affected areas.

The rain knocked out power to about 68,000 households at its peak.

Roughly 23,000 remained without electricity on Friday morning.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued its highest Level 5 heavy rain warning across 22 Chiba municipalities as the deluge intensified, along with its most severe landslide warning in six areas.

Those warnings were downgraded to Level 4 shortly after 5 a.m. on Friday as the worst of the rain eased.

However, forecasters warned that the atmosphere remained highly unstable and further intense thunderstorms were possible later in the day.

Waterlogged ground and swollen waterways also meant even comparatively modest rainfall could trigger fresh flooding or landslides.

At Narita, the airport company said approximately 7,000 people remained inside the terminals at 4 a.m. after buses and trains linking the airport with central Tokyo were suspended.

“I never thought I’d spend the night at the airport, but it is what it is and we are learning,” one stranded traveller told Japanese broadcaster NHK.

“We’re never going to forget this trip.”

Rail links began reopening in stages on Friday morning, although delays, cancellations and long queues continued.

Flights were operating broadly as scheduled, with Japan Airlines warning that some services could be delayed but saying no widespread cancellations were expected.

The chaos extended far beyond the airport.

More than 4,000 people spent the night inside JR Soga station after surrounding streets were submerged by water that reached as high as an adult’s waist.

As many as 1,700 other people took shelter inside the Chiba prefectural government building and a neighbouring government facility, while 11 temporary accommodation sites were opened across Chiba city.

Dozens of abandoned vehicles remained scattered across flooded roads on Friday morning.

On one stretch of road in central Chiba, more than 20 vehicles blocked traffic across approximately 492 feet.

Major highways linking Narita Airport with Tokyo were also closed or heavily congested, forcing motorists onto alternative routes.

Weather experts said the disaster was caused by a rare combination of cold air high in the atmosphere, an enormous supply of warm, moist air and converging winds over Chiba.

Jesse James Faces $90k Custom Gun Lawsuit Amid Divorce and Abuse Allegations

Jesse James, known for his past marriage to Sandra Bullock, finds himself in hot water amid controversy surrounding a $90K bespoke firearm, coinciding with his ongoing divorce and abuse accusations linked to his fifth spouse.

The 55-year-old former TV star is facing legal action over a custom gun ordered by a client. According to TMZ, Jesse argues that the client, who has initiated the lawsuit, is balking at settling the full payment and is attempting to reverse the agreement.

In documents presented, David Chace states he entered into a verbal contract with Jesse and his firm, Jesse James Firearms Unlimited, back in 2018 for the crafting of a tailor-made gun set.

Chace contends he has already provided the West Coast Customs founder with a $5K deposit, alongside an additional $75K, but he is yet to receive the firearm or any updates on its expected completion.

In response, David is pursuing a lawsuit to reclaim his money, along with seeking further compensation for damages incurred.

Jesse told TMZ, however, that he had been in constant contact with David throughout the process as the gun has been finished but the customer refuses to pay the final bill and owes him $90K.

David had claimed that he had put the custom firearm plans on hold in 2020 and tried to change his order from a whole set of pistols to a single custom and that Jesse had agreed to the switch-up in April 2020.

It has been six years since the original agreement as the customer claims that the gun hasn’t been finished to his satisfaction as Jesse claims he is being ‘hostile and inappropriate.’

Jesse told TMZ that it took almost a year just to make the parts of the weapon which is valued around $250K which he gave David a discounted price for.

The Monster Garage star alleges that David doesn’t want to pay him the money and is suing in order to get his money back.

The lawsuit news comes as Jesse’s wife of two years Bonnie Rotten – real name Alaina Hicks – has once again filed for divorce from the reality TV star after she filed twice in late 2022.

This time both have accused each other of domestic abuse.

James even filed for the restraining order on Wednesday after Rotten’s divorce petition. She also had her own restraining order request.

He is asking the court to keep Rotten ‘100 feet from him and their child until a custody hearing can be held,’ according to a Friday report from TMZ.

Former porn star Rotten, 30, became 55-year-old James’ fifth wife in June 2022. They welcomed a son named Bishop in 2023.

James famously cheated on his A-list movie star wife Sandra Bullock which led to their 2010 divorce. He also dated tattoo artist Kat Von D.

DailyMail.com has contacted Jesse James’ representative for comment.

In court documents, James said that in early 2022 before they even wed she attacked him and tried to break his finger. But he married her anyhow.

And he added that she was violent many times after that.

His examples are when Bonnie allegedly tried to poke a hole in his neck with her nail when she was pregnant with their son.

James also said that she kicked him from behind, breaking his wrist and dislocating his thumb. She argued that she slammed the door on him and he fell.

He also accused her of abusing their cats and dogs.

This comes as Jesse's wife of two years Bonnie Rotten - real name Alaina Hicks - has once again filed for divorce from the star after she filed twice in late 2022. This time both have accused each other of domestic abuse

Bonnie claimed that Jesse slapped her in the face once and punched her in the throat.

TMZ claimed to have spoken with Bonnie.

She told the site she moved out of the house with Jesse and took their son with her ‘to protect them.’

She also claimed that Jesse is trying to ‘gaslight’ her.

Rotten told the site: ‘For the safety and well-being of our child, I will not engage in litigating this matter in the press. I trust the legal process to address these issues appropriately and respectfully ask for privacy during this time.’

This comes after she filed for divorce twice in 2022.

In December 2022 she accused her husband of cheating and branding him ‘disgusting’.

One day later, Rotten revealed the pair had reconciled.

In 2022 the two were at each other’s throats.

Rotten announced her pregnancy with a sonogram photo in November 2022, with the caption: ‘Jesse is busy trying to f*** other women while I’m pregnant.’

This comes after James took to Instagram to deny the cheating accusations and share an array of snaps of the couple in happier times.

He wrote: ‘Baby I didn’t cheat on you I swear!! I’m sorry we got into a fight. I’m sorry I called you a r****d when we were fighting.

‘I know that just made you more mad, and didn’t do anything to make the situation better. It was out of line and childish and immature. I’m sorry I did that.

James, who has a long history of infidelity, added: ‘In the whole time we have been together, I have never texted or sent inappropriate DMs to anyone.

‘Please know. I’ve never thought about cheating on you. I’ve never tried to cheat on you. I’ve never had the urge to cheat on you. You are the only one I want, forever.

‘Every chick that was hanging around back then got told I was in love with you and I couldn’t see them anymore,” he wrote. “This was me making efforts to secure your trust and do things the right way. (What a ‘Man’ does).

James admitted that he had texted an ex ‘out of spite’ after his row with Rotten, saying: ‘I really thought we were done, and I was so mad and acted out of anger and spite.

‘I know this hurt you and I’m sorry. I unfollowed her and won’t contact again.’

‘I know you’re pregnant, and I know you are having a rough time right now. I want to make things better and do everything possible to make your life the best.

‘I want to be a positive and fix everything with us. I’ve learned from my past mistakes and I will do whatever it takes to make you happy, and gain your love and trust. Please come home. I love you.’

He later changed the caption on the post to: ‘2022 a love story in 9 pictures’ and tagged his estranged wife.

In December 2022 he said: ‘Ok I think you guys have had enough.. I’m sorry you guys had to endure my little social experiment this week, but it was necessary, For Starters…I love my wife. Like really love her.’

Rotten branded the famed mechanic a ‘truly disgusting human being’ and said, ‘I’m so hurt by everything he has done to me.’

She also accused him on following his ex and other girls on Instagram: ‘I see his page he’s following his ex and a bunch of girls.

‘I’m his pregnant wife and he chooses to act like this. THAT’S NOT A MAN.’

‘I’m so hurt by everything he has done to me. He doesn’t give a f*** about anyone but himself. He’s a truly disgusting human being,’ she went on.

She also addressed those who warned her about James.

Bonnie had her eight-year-old daughter in attendance from her first marriage to celebrate the nuptials.

This isn’t the first time James has been accused of cheating by a spouse.

His marriage to Oscar winning actress Sandra Bullock imploded following news of his infidelity in 2010.

Sandra and Jesse got married in 2005, and together they adopted a child named Louis.

However, soon after the couple took that big step, news of his infidelity with tattooed model Michelle ‘Bombshell’ McGee swept over.

In April 2010, Jesse checked himself into a rehab facility in Arizona for sex addiction after apologizing profusely to Bullock, although that wasn’t enough to save the marriage – they divorced the following June.

Jesse has three children: Chandler James and Jesse James Jr. with his first wife, Karla James, to whom he was married from 1991 to 2002.

He also shares daughter Sunny James with his second wife, retired porn actress Janine Lindemulder, to whom he was married from 2002 to 2004.

His fourth wife was professional drag racer Alexis DeJoria.

They married in March 2013 and went on to separate in March 2020, after he allegedly cheated with ‘at least 20 women’ and would ‘sneak his mistresses into the marital home in Austin, Texas for sex while his wife was away on race meets or at family functions.’

He was also engaged to famous tattoo artist Kat Von D in January 2011. They had an on-off relationship before ultimately splitting in September 2011 as she later accused him of cheating with multiple women.

Megyn Kelly Defends Martha Stewart’s Bold Remarks on Meghan Markle, Celebrates Her Wit and Wisdom

Megyn Kelly didn’t hold back her criticism of Meghan Markle following a recent social gathering involving Martha Stewart.

During her SiriusXM broadcast on Tuesday, Kelly emphasized her trust in Stewart’s version of events, which suggested that Markle was allegedly recounting tales of her meeting with King Charles at a recent dinner in California.

“Martha tells it like it is,” Kelly asserted. “She doesn’t sugarcoat.”

Kelly, at 55, pointed out that despite Stewart being 85, her mental acuity remains impressive, implying she wouldn’t have misinterpreted Markle, 45, during the event.

In an interview with People released last week, Stewart shared that Markle had reportedly been discussing her meeting with Charles, 77, shortly after returning from the palace.

However, the host of the dinner exclusively told Page Six, “I sat next to Meghan at the dinner party and this account of what happened is simply untrue. Meghan didn’t talk about her European vacation other than to say the family had a great time.”

Kelly, a long-time critic of Markle and Prince Harry, theorized the mom of two had her team put out a statement to discredit Stewart after the dinner.

“Meghan can’t have anything written about her without filing a lawsuit, threatening a lawsuit, having her people call,” Kelly said, noting that Stewart only “said something innocuous about Markle” in the interview.

Kelly’s guest, Maureen Callahan, similarly blasted Markle and said she’s “her own worst enemy.”

“I completely believe Martha Stewart’s version of events,” Callahan said, calling the former “Suits” star a “ghoul” and “child.”

Callahan also slammed Markle for being estranged from her dad, Thomas Markle, who underwent leg amputation surgery in the Philippines earlier this year.

“She’s not gonna go see anybody’s father unless he has a crown on his head,” Kelly said, referring to the 71-year-old cancer-stricken monarch. “That’s the father she’s willing to spend time with.”

Kelly also predicted that Charles is going to fully reconcile with Markle and Harry, 41, after their reunion.

“I think the King is gonna allow it. I think he’s gonna let him back in,” Kelly said. “He’s a dad before he’s a king.”

Page Six has reached out to Markle’s rep for comment.

Along with the dinner party claims, Stewart made shady comments about the “With Love, Meghan” host’s attempted homemaking career in the People interview.

“If you’re an actress, it’s hard to then transition to a princess and then from a princess into a homemaking guru on a television show,” Stewart said about Markle, whose Netflix lifestyle series got canceled after two seasons.

“It doesn’t sort of follow. So go from there,” Stewart added.

Stewart previously took a dig at Markle’s cooking endeavours in July 2025.

“I hope she knows what she’s talking about,” the original lifestyle guru told Yahoo Lifestyle at the time.

“Authenticity, to me, is everything, and to be authentic and knowledgeable about your subject matter is extremely important.”

US on High Alert: Historic Hurricane Warning as Nation Prepares for Imminent Impact

0

Tropical Storm Lala is gaining strength in the Pacific, and experts caution that it might soon transform into the first hurricane on record to impact Hawaii’s Big Island.

On Friday morning, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) revised the storm’s projected path and intensity, indicating that Lala is expected to reach hurricane force by early Saturday morning.

Amos Lonokailua-Hewett, the Administrator of the Maui Emergency Management Agency, emphasized, “Lala is intensifying, and it is crucial for residents to be ready for the potential of severe winds, torrential rain, flooding, and substantial waves.”

This occurrence would be unprecedented, marking the first recorded instance of a hurricane making landfall on Hawaii’s Big Island since the commencement of precise weather documentation in the 20th century.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Jesse Ferrell noted, “Hawaii’s Big Island has never experienced a hurricane making landfall. Only Tropical Storms Darby in 2016 and Iselle in 2014 have previously reached land on the Big Island.”

NHC upgraded their alert to an official Hurricane Warning for the Big Island (Hawaiʻi Island), and also issued Tropical Storm Watches for all of Maui County, which includes the islands of Maui, Molokai, Lānaʻi and Kahoʻolawe.

Lala currently has sustained winds of 60 mph and is expected to begin impacting the state Friday afternoon, delivering potentially dangerous wind gusts and rain.

Once the storm arrives on Saturday, AccuWeather’s worst-case scenario warns that parts of the Big Island could see up to 30 inches of rain, deadly flash flooding and mudslides, wind gusts reaching 100 mph and ocean surges approaching six feet.

The heaviest rainfall and wind damage is expected to impact the eastern side of the Big Island, however, forecasters now predict that the entire island chain will see at least two to four inches of rain this weekend, with isolated spots seeing eight inches.

AccuWeather predicted that Lala will be a Level 2 out of 5 on their ‘Real Impact’ scale for rating hurricane damage.

This means the storm will likely cause wind damage to small buildings and trees, power outages and significant property damage in coastal communities.

AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva warned that the oncoming storm closely resembles Hurricane Hone, which brought severe flooding and dangerous winds to the island paradise in 2024.

‘Despite never making landfall in Hawaii, Hone brought more than two feet of rain to portions of the Big Island, causing significant flooding, as well as winds in excess of 70 mph,’ DaSilva said in a statement.

The only other hurricane believed to have made landfall on the Big Island was the 1871 Kohala Cyclone but there are only unconfirmed reports from local newspapers documenting the extreme weather event.

According to Hawaiian news outlet Big Island Now, the Kohala Cyclone was a Category 3 hurricane when it struck the north side of the Big Island on August 9, 1871.

AccuWeather has projected that Tropical Storm Lala will only reach Category 1 hurricane status overnight, meaning it will have sustained winds of 75 to 95 mph.

More than one million people are spread out across the state, particularly in communities such as Honolulu, Waikiki, Kahului and Kihei.

Hawaii is in the peak of its summer travel season, with roughly 250,000 vacationers visiting beaches and other tourist attractions on any given day from June to mid-August.

Maui, Hawaii’s second-largest island and one of the state’s top vacation destinations, welcomed approximately 2.5 million visitors in 2025, drawing tourists to its world-class white and black sand beaches, luxury resorts, whale watching sites and iconic attractions such as the 64-mile-long highway known as the Road to Hāna.

Mayor Richard Bissen of Maui County said in a statement: ‘County departments have been preparing for Tropical Storm Lala, and we’re asking our community to do the same.’

‘Use today to finish securing property, making sure your home has enough food, water, supplies and medications, and check on kūpuna (grandparents), neighbors and loved ones.’

Australian Homebuyers Face $275K Extra, 10 More Years of Payments

0

Imagine committing to a mortgage payment plan that stretches all the way to 2066. This could be a reality for some Australians as more lenders introduce 40-year home loans into the market.

In recent years, a growing number of smaller lending institutions in Australia have begun offering these extended mortgage terms, which extend a decade beyond the conventional 30 years.

AMP, a prominent name among Australian banks, has jumped on this trend by unveiling a new 40-year mortgage product specifically targeted at investors.

This move places AMP alongside a select group of lenders such as Credit Union SA, Unity Bank, Great Southern Bank, RACQ Bank, Bank of Us, Liberty, and Pepper Money.

Sally Tindall, the director of data insights at financial comparison site Canstar, shared with SBS News that many of these extended 40-year mortgages are aimed at younger individuals and first-time homebuyers.

Last year, a Finder survey found that 30 per cent of Australians would take out a 40-year mortgage if it reduced their monthly repayments to a more affordable level.

But experts warn there are major downsides that would-be borrowers should weigh.

The trade-offs of a 40-year mortgage

With house prices at historic highs, a longer loan term can make it easier for some Australians to enter the housing market by reducing monthly repayments, improving their serviceability or increasing how much they can borrow.

But it comes at significant cost.

According to an analysis by Canstar, an additional decade of repayments on a $600,000 mortgage could reduce a borrower’s initial monthly repayments by around $288 but result in nearly $275,000 in extra interest over the life of the loan.

“It improves someone’s chances of getting the green light on a loan that they might not have otherwise been able to afford,” Tindall told SBS News.

“But really, if you are someone that is struggling to pay off a debt over 30 years, it’s worth stopping and thinking, well, is the size of the amount I want to borrow too high for my financial situation?”

Last year, when Great Southern Bank introduced a new 40-year loan, its chief customer officer, Rolf Stromsoe, suggested the product could be a stepping stone for first-home buyers, allowing them to enter the market before ultimately refinancing.

“As their needs evolve and their earnings capacity changes, they may refinance any number of times — but this is the loan that can start it all,” he said.

But Tindall warned that refinancing may be a challenge with this type of product, given the limited pool of lenders that offer them and their high-risk profile.

It also exposes borrowers to the risk of being trapped in a loan they could struggle to refinance.

“Is that pay rise guaranteed? Is that promotion guaranteed? Absolutely not,” Tindall asked.

“It might all work out fantastically. It might not, and so it’s really important to be looking at the alternatives, so that you understand the risks of that particular strategy, and go in with your eyes open.”

She added that with fewer lenders to choose from, interest rates on these loans could be less competitive.

A growing trend?

Amid a global housing affordability crunch, longer loans are also gaining traction in several other countries.

In the UK, mortgages stretching beyond 30 years have become increasingly common, while 50-year loans are gaining popularity among younger buyers in Japan.

In the US, President Donald Trump floated the prospect of a 50-year mortgage last year.

Sarah Megginson, personal finance expert at Finder, said she expects more lenders may start offering 40-year loans in Australia as housing becomes increasingly out of reach for many buyers.

“I think that we will see more banks respond to customer demands by looking at different ways they can evolve their products and get more lending happening,” she told SBS News.

And as the cost of living burden leaves households with limited wiggle room in their budgets, she said, the prospect of saving a few hundred dollars a month on a mortgage may be attractive to some.

“Long term, the pain is there, but in the short term, people are just looking to try and release a bit of pressure,” she said, describing longer loan terms as offering “short-term gain for long-term pain”.

Tindall, however, doesn’t think there’s appetite for many lenders to offer 40-year loans.

“I don’t think they’re going to become more common,” she said. “APRA (The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority) sees them as risky, and certainly the big banks don’t touch them.”

The banking regulator has previously said it places greater scrutiny on higher-risk mortgage lending, which includes lending at very long terms.

There are a range of factors behind this, Tindall said, including the sheer length of the loan. Someone taking out a 40-year mortgage in their 40s could still be paying it off well into retirement, in their 80s.

She doesn’t believe longer loan terms are the answer to Australia’s housing affordability problem — far from it.

“I can’t see a world where we move towards a 40-year mortgage as a solution to overpaying on a property.”

“What we need to see in order to make housing more affordable is more stock and lower prices, rather than just getting people to sign up for longer debts.”

Kentucky Educator Arrest Highlights Urgency of New Anti-Grooming Law, Advocate Urges Vigilance

What may seem like harmless attention toward a child can sometimes conceal darker intentions, warns a Kentucky advocate. This caution comes as the state’s newly enacted grooming law results in its first arrest mere weeks after its implementation.

Laura Wills-Coppelman, who established Institutional Complicity Kentucky, known as ICKY, shared with News Media her perspective on the recent arrest. She views it as validation of the new legislation’s purpose, which is to offer law enforcement an earlier chance to intervene before behavior potentially escalates into sexual abuse.

“For the first time, legal measures in Kentucky enable intervention in scenarios where children might face irreversible harm,” noted Wills-Coppelman. “It’s an essential advancement in efforts to thwart child abuse.”

Just a few weeks post-enactment on July 15, the new law led to the arrest of 25-year-old Sadie M. Flores from Mayfield. She faces charges of grooming a minor, classified as a Class D felony.

The Graves County Sheriff’s Office said Flores, an employee at Graves County Middle School, allegedly had an improper relationship with a minor student in the district.

The allegation was initially reported to Graves County Schools, which immediately turned the information over to the sheriff’s office, according to authorities.

Detectives seized electronic records, conducted interviews and took other investigative steps before interviewing Flores and arresting her around 3:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.

Wills-Coppelman cautioned against drawing conclusions about Flores, saying the evidence and allegations in the case must now be evaluated through the court system.

But she said the arrest illustrates the significance of creating an earlier point at which authorities can investigate conduct that may precede abuse.

Wills-Coppelman said one of the biggest misconceptions about grooming is the belief that one questionable interaction can be viewed in isolation and labeled grooming.

Instead, she said grooming often unfolds gradually, with behaviors that may seem explainable on their own becoming increasingly concerning when they form a pattern.

“Grooming is a pattern of behavior that is intended to build trust, erode boundaries, and create conditions for a child to be exploited or abused,” she said.

Potential warning signs, she said, can include excessive attention or favoritism, gifts, secrecy and increasingly isolating a child from other trusted adults or peers.

Individually, some of those behaviors may have innocent explanations. The alarm, Wills-Coppelman said, comes when adults begin seeing them develop into a broader pattern over time.

And from the child’s perspective, she warned, grooming may not feel threatening at all.

“Grooming is a form of manipulation,” Wills-Coppelman said, explaining that a child may instead feel “special and seen and validated” by the attention.

“It doesn’t often register as dangerous until it’s too late,” she said.

For parents watching from the outside, however, the same relationship may begin setting off alarm bells.

“Why does this adult need so much access? Why are they being isolated so much? Why so much excessive attention?” Wills-Coppelman said parents should ask themselves.

Wills-Coppelman said survivors her organization has spoken with have repeatedly described another troubling pattern — adults who recognized something felt wrong but did not speak up at the time.

“A lot of people, bystanders, in their situations in retrospect look back and say, ‘I had an icky feeling,'” she said. “I saw something or I heard something that made me feel uncomfortable. I wish I would have spoken up.”

She stressed that reporting concerning conduct is not the same as declaring someone guilty.

Instead, she said, authorities are responsible for examining the evidence and determining whether conduct meets the threshold for criminal charges.

“The point of awareness can be the point of prevention,” Wills-Coppelman said.

That distinction has become particularly important amid concerns that ordinary interactions between teachers, coaches, youth leaders and children could be mistaken for grooming. The law makes clear that legitimate school, work and volunteer-related communications are not what it is designed to criminalize.

Wills-Coppelman rejected that characterization, calling appropriate adult-child boundaries “common sense.”

“Healthy adult-child mentorship respects appropriate boundaries. Grooming erodes them,” she said.

“The intent of the law is to create an earlier intervention point, not to criminalize ordinary relationships between adults and children.”

Wills-Coppelman said the legislation received unanimous support in both chambers of the Kentucky legislature and bipartisan backing.

House Bill 4, primarily sponsored by Republican state Rep. Marianne Proctor, passed the House 98-0 and the Senate 38-0 before the House unanimously approved the Senate’s changes. Gov. Andy Beshear signed it into law April 10.

“This is not a political issue. This is a human issue,” she said.

The pushback she has encountered, she said, has instead largely centered on due process and concerns about what happens after someone reports suspected grooming.

Wills-Coppelman said due process remains an essential part of the law because a report alone does not automatically trigger criminal charges. Investigators must evaluate the evidence before determining whether charges are warranted.

“We can preserve and respect due process and also prioritize the prevention of abuse and the protection of our children,” she said. “They are not competing principles.”

Wills-Coppelman said she ultimately hopes the law results not in more arrests, but fewer children ever reaching the point where alleged abuse occurs.

“The ultimate goal of this law is not more prosecutions,” she said. “It’s earlier recognition, awareness and understanding of what these behaviors look like and ultimately prevention.”

For Wills-Coppelman, passing the grooming law is only one piece of a larger fight.

She said she now wants Kentucky’s educator code of ethics brought into alignment with the new law and is pushing for greater accountability when people in positions of authority become aware of disturbing patterns but fail to report them.

That includes situations in which institutions attempt to handle serious allegations internally rather than referring them to the appropriate authorities, she said.

“My efforts are focused not only on the obvious villain, which is the perpetrator in these cases, but also turning some attention toward enablers, systems and institutions and the people within those organizations that had the capacity and the ability to take action and made a deliberate choice to not do so,” Wills-Coppelman said.

In the Flores case, Graves County Schools said administrators contacted law enforcement immediately after becoming aware of the allegation.

Superintendent Matt Madding said the district has since been informed that charges were filed against the teacher and pledged continued cooperation with investigators.

“We take any allegation involving the safety of a child or the professional conduct of an employee extremely seriously,” Madding said in a statement.

The district said it is limited in what it can disclose because the case remains an ongoing legal and personnel matter.

Wills-Coppelman hopes Kentucky’s approach eventually reaches far beyond the state.

She said Ohio has legislation similar to Kentucky’s, but her goal is for protections against grooming to ultimately become a nationwide standard.

“A child’s protection from grooming and abuse should never depend on geography,” she said.

For now, Kentucky’s first case under the new law will move through the courts, while the legislation itself faces its first real-world test.

And for Wills-Coppelman, its success won’t ultimately be measured by the number of people put behind bars.

“If it prevents even one child from the horrific consequences of abuse,” she said, “that makes it all worth it.”
