In the wake of the storms, over 260,000 NIPSCO customers were left in the dark by Thursday morning, marking it as the most significant power outage event the utility has ever faced, with initial outages affecting upwards of 301,000 customers.
NIPSCO projects that power will be restored to 90% of impacted homes and businesses by Tuesday, August 19, with a full restoration expected by Friday, August 21.
Adding to the tumultuous weather story, the National Weather Service confirmed that at least six tornadoes swept through the Chicago area on Tuesday, including two that touched down in parts of northwest Indiana.
The National Weather Service said an EF2 tornado traveled from Monee to Crete and another EF1 traveled from Orland Park to Flossmoor on Tuesday. A third tornado was confirmed in Will County around Mokena, the NWS said. The damage is consistent with an EF1 tornado. Two of the tornadoes traveled into Indiana. The National Weather Service on Wednesday also confirmed an EF0 tornado in the Oswego area. And an EF1 tornado was confirmed in Wilmington. On Thursday, a sixth tornado, an EF1, was confirmed in the Homewood area.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun authorized the state’s National Guard to assist with storm cleanup in Lake County.
The Indiana National Guard said they plan to hand out meals soon, but have yet to release any locations.
Braun declared Statewide Disaster Emergency due to the storms on Thursday.
“Hoosiers’ safety is my top priority,” Braun said. “Our state response is fully mobilized, resources are moving where they’re needed, and we will continue working around the clock to support every impacted community.”
Two people died in the severe storms. In Gary, 58-year-old Paula Plebanski , a woman who was experiencing homelessness, died after being struck by roofing material.
In Portage, 86-year-old Leona Rice died in a house explosion.
However, despite the destruction, neighbors are showing up for each other.
In Portage, the American Legion Post 260 provided meals for those impacted by the storms while Portage Township leaders set up free shelter for people to rest and charge up their phones and medical devices.
Another storm damage victim in Portage, Indiana is making a plea for help amid widespread storm recovery in the area.
A young woman from Portage is trying to find help for her and her parents.
Two trees fell on top of their trailer home in Oak Tree Village Trailer Park causing the roof to cave in. Now the 21-year-old, Dawnn Gaoian, her 76-year-old father John and 56-year-old mother Wendy do not have a place to live.
Dawnn, who just graduated collage, says her family doesn’t have the money to cover the damage and are now unsure of where to go.
“Just seeing your childhood home, all those memories gone, and just trying to figure out where to go next with things,” Dawnn said. “And we don’t have homeowners insurance or anything like that. So it’s definitely been a bit of a struggle to try to figure out where we’re gonna go next with things.”
The family has started a GoFundMe page to aid their recovery.
The storm’s impact is also affecting families preparing to return to school.
The School Town of Munster announced the first day of school for K-12 students has been postponed until at least Monday, Aug. 17.

Convicted in Bob Lee’s Murder, Nima Momeni Alleges Racial Bias in San Francisco Court

Claiming a prejudiced legal saga, Nima Momeni, a convicted murderer, is accusing racial bias in his trial. Momeni, of Iranian origin and not holding US citizenship, is poised for another day in a San Francisco courtroom where his legal defense team intends to argue that racial discrimination played a significant role in the proceedings that concluded with his guilty verdict for the murder of Cash App visionary, Bob Lee.
Momeni, aged 42, faced a jury in December 2024, which resulted in him being convicted on charges of second-degree murder.
Taking a bold step, his defense is now leveraging the California Racial Justice Act, raising contentions that suggest prosecutorial misconduct influenced by racial prejudice, as reported by Courthouse News Service.
This Friday morning, a San Francisco Superior Court judge will delve into the veracity of these claims during an evidentiary hearing. The discussions are set to examine whether the prosecution’s language demeaned Momeni through racial overtones, potentially impacting the fairness of his trial.
A San Francisco Superior Court judge will hear the claim at an evidentiary hearing Friday morning, including allegations that prosecutors used dehumanizing and ethnically charged descriptions of Momeni during the trial.
Momeni was born in Iran and speaks English as a second language.
The case began in the early-morning hours of April 4, 2023, when Lee, 43, was stabbed through the heart beneath the Bay Bridge between about 2:25 a.m. to 2:30 a.m.
Lee, a father of two, had been a major name in tech.
He worked as a Google engineer, founded Cash App and later became an executive at cryptocurrency company MobileCoin.
After the stabbing, Lee left a trail of blood as he called 911 begging for help before collapsing on Main Street.
Prosecutors said Momeni went after Lee in a revenge attack involving his younger sister, Khazar, after she was sexually assaulted by a drug dealer.

Momeni blamed Lee, prosecutors said, because Lee had used drugs with Khazar, introduced her to the dealer and left her alone with the assailant.
Khazar, married to a wealthy plastic surgeon, had a casual relationship with Lee and attended parties with him. Prosecutors showed jurors flirtatious text messages between the pair.
Prosecutors argued Momeni lured Lee away from Khazar’s luxury Millennium Tower apartment and brought him to a dark street beneath the Bay Bridge to kill him.
Khazar later sent Lee a message that morning before realizing he was dead: “Just wanted to make sure your doing ok. Cause i know nima came wayyyyyy down hard on you.”
She also bombarded Momeni with angry messages asking what had happened to Lee after they left her apartment. Jurors saw messages in which she called her brother a “lunatic” and “psycho.”
Momeni took the stand and offered a different story.
He testified Lee attacked him after Momeni made a “bad joke” about Lee spending time in strip clubs instead of with his family.
Prosecutors said Lee was unarmed when he was killed.
California’s Racial Justice Act became law in 2021. In 2025, a San Francisco judge granted an RJA motion for the first time in the city, finding implicit racial bias against a Black man convicted of gun charges.
His felony conviction was reduced to a misdemeanor.
It is unclear what would happen to Momeni’s murder conviction if a judge grants his RJA motion.
And despite the guilty verdict, Momeni still hasn’t been sentenced.
Nearly 20 months after jurors convicted him, he remains in San Francisco County jail awaiting a heavily delayed sentencing hearing.
He faces 16 years to life behind bars.
Hegseth Responds to Claims of Sailors Going Overboard
In a sharp rebuttal to recent claims, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth dismissed reports suggesting that dissatisfaction among crew members of the USS Abraham Lincoln has driven some to the extreme measure of leaping into the sea.
This denial follows an admission by military authorities that a sailor was indeed retrieved from the ocean earlier this month, an event described by CNN as a ‘mental health incident,’ not indicative of a widespread crisis.
Aboard the Lincoln, approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines have been stationed since November 21. Remarkably, the vessel has been at sea for over 240 days without docking at a single port.
Although initially slated to return in May, the ship’s deployment was unexpectedly extended with no definite end date due to rising tensions with Iran.
Extended time away from home has reportedly taken a toll on the crew, with several sailors’ families expressing concerns that exhaustion is pushing some to contemplate drastic actions, such as jumping from the vessel.
But speaking with Newsmax on Thursday, Hegseth said the reports have been ‘completely misrepresented.’
‘Listen, we make sure that every ship, every crew, every captain has everything we can provide them at every single moment,’ he insisted.
US Central Command also called reports suggesting a spike in suicidal ideations ‘false,’ saying: ‘No service members aboard the aircraft carrier have died and the one Sailor who fell overboard [on] August 3 was quickly and safely recovered.’
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth denied reports on Thursday that sailors onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier are so unhappy with the conditions at sea that they are jumping overboard
Sailors onboard the aircraft carrier have been deployed for more than eight months with no indication of when they might return
‘The Sailors and Marines of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group remain resilient and resolved after more than 260 days at sea, 10,000 aircraft flights and 1.5 million pounds of ordnance expended,’ CENTCOM posted on X.
‘The rampant misreporting on Abraham Lincoln’s historic deployment is a disservice to our men and women in uniform and their loved ones.’
The sailor who fell overboard had been wearing a life vest and officials have ruled the incident was a mental health episode, CNN reports.
In his own remarks, Hegseth noted that ‘some deployments are longer than others’ as he claimed he has ‘more respect and gratitude for those sailors than anybody.
‘What they do in those high seas and those austere conditions with less port calls, it’s incredible,’ Hegseth said.
He did not directly address the reports detailing supply shortages, water contamination and sailors’ deteriorating mental health, nor did he say when the vessel would return stateside.
The Wall Street Journal has since reported that officials are preparing to replace the Lincoln with the USS George Washington as part of a scheduled deployment in the region.
Hegseth said he simply said he wants the service members ‘home as soon as everybody else’ does.
‘My commanders know that, our service secretaries know that, [President Trump] expects that,’ Hegseth told reporters.
There have been concerns that the ship was running out of food supplies amid pictures showing the meager portions sailors were receiving for their meals
His comments follow concern from sailors’ families who have complained about mildew in the showers and a lack of clean water as well as food shortages and generally low morale.
Naval officials have said the plumbing issues have resolved, and Hegseth has previously dismissed claims that food supplies were running low as ‘fake news.’
Meanwhile, care packages that families have been sending to the troops have reportedly not made it to the Middle East under an indefinite suspension of mail deliveries to military ZIP codes.
Amid these alleged conditions, the wife of the sailor who jumped off the aircraft carrier told MS Now she was kept in the dark about what happened.
She said her husband was in the water for an hour before he was rescued from what she described as a suicide attempt.
‘I think that it was handled very poorly because they didn’t inform me and they didn’t want me to know, and they’re just trying to cover this up,’ she said.
She shared her last text with her husband on July 21 in which he said life on the ship was getting to him.
‘I’m really trying to not feel negative or hopeless but between the wifi and not knowing when I will come home and not knowing what is happening back at home, it’s really getting me,’ he wrote in the message, noting that he had been due to leave on July 15 but the plan was canceled.
‘I don’t think I can do another deployment after this and i don’t even know if i can finish this deployment,’ the sailor added.
His wife said he went to the chain of command and the medical team onboard the ship to express his concerns about his mental health, telling them he was not doing well.
The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier is pictured in April carrying out blockade operations in the Arabian Sea
She also said her husband expressed his concern that his prescription contact lenses had expired and that he was having trouble seeing and doing his job properly, working on the helicopters on the carrier’s flight deck.
‘Every single time he would make a mistake, they would yell at him and he would get into a lot of trouble,’ she claimed. ‘He would explain to them that he can’t see because his prescription was expired, but they still allowed him to work.
‘I think that also had a big toll on him, because he could have injured a lot of people and he could have injured himself, because that’s what they kept yelling at him every time he made a mistake.’
Her husband is now en route back to San Diego after being medically released. It will be the first time meeting his seven-month-old baby girl as he reunites with his three-and-a-half-year-old son.
‘I just really don’t know what to say about all this because it’s so, because it’s so, it doesn’t feel real to me,’ she told MS Now.
Annabelle Loma has also told how her husband was left overextended before he tried to jump overboard.
Her husband is now left on a medical hold, and Loma said she has not heard from anyone in the Navy about his condition for weeks.
Sailors’ wives have detailed how some tried to jump overboard from the ship
‘He’s scared,’ Loma told the Military Times. ‘He thinks he’ll get a dishonorable discharge and just because he was burnt out, his 13-year career is ruined, just like that.
‘That’s not fair. That’s not what he should be worried about.’
In a separate incident, a sailor on watch saw a shipmate preparing to go overboard and intervened, Maria Rodriguez, the sailor’s wife, told the outlet.
She described how her husband called out to the sailor before reaching down and grabbing the sailor’s arms, pulling him back onto deck.
The sailor had not yet gone overboard when her husband rushed to his aid, Rodriguez said, noting that three other sailors heard the commotion and came running to help.
‘He said he hadn’t felt adrenaline like that in his life and he was just so thankful he was able to get to [the sailor] in time, to stop them from going overboard,’ she noted.
Rodriguez said she does not know what happened to the sailor in the aftermath.
Sailors have also described an incident in which watch standers stopped a crew member from going overboard a few months ago amid a struggle with exhaustion and declining morale, according to Stars and Stripes.
More than 200 family members met with acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao (left) last Thursday to discuss their concerns about their loved ones’ mental health
As concern mounted for their loved ones, more than 200 concerned family members met with acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao in an emotional town hall meeting last Thursday.
At one point during the meeting, a spouse tearfully told officials she received a message that same day from her husband saying ‘he hopes he doesn’t wake up tomorrow,’ Stars and Stripes reports.
A mother also described how her daughter feels like she is never going to be able to come home and believes she is going to die on the ship, according to MS Now.
Officials did not respond directly to those claims or similar statements family members made.
Instead, Vice Admiral Joseph Cahill, commander of the Naval Surface Forces, simply acknowledged the strain on sailors and their families the extended deployment causes.
Senator Richard Blumenthal has called for the Navy to account for the conditions aboard the aircraft carrier
‘We hear you loud and clear [regarding] the impact this has on families, on service members and the long-term ability of us to stand, sustain our force’s health,’ he said.
He then stressed that sailors had access to mental health professionals, chaplains and doctors, and noted they were also sending more mental health professionals to the ship.
Navy officials added that the USS Lincoln’s leadership is continuously assessing sailor’s psychological readiness.
‘Leadership is continuously conducting assessments to monitor and sustain the psychological readiness of every sailor,’ the Navy told Stars and Stripes.
Still, Congressional Democrats demanded answers Wednesday about the conditions onboard the aircraft carrier.
In a letter to Hegseth, Senator Richard Blumenthal called for the Navy to account for conditions aboard the aircraft carrier, which ‘has been deployed more than 250 days’ without coming ashore ‘in over 200 days, setting a record for consecutive days at sea.’
Blumenthal voiced concern for such extended deployments, noting ‘widespread reports of shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing issues, deteriorating mental health, deck safety concerns’ and other problems aboard the Lincoln.
‘The men and women aboard the Lincoln have answered the call to serve their country,’ the senator from Connecticut wrote.
Hegseth said the reports of a mental health crisis aboard the ship have been ‘completely misrepresented’
‘The Department owes them adequate supplies, maintenance and support during this deployment.’
Senator Ruben Gallego also called for ‘an official oversight visit with the bipartisan Senate Delegation to the USS Lincoln to investigate the reported alarming conditions,’ in a post on X.
In the meantime, US military officials have sent the USS George Washington from Vietnam to the Middle East to reportedly replace the Lincoln as one of the two aircraft carriers now stationed in the region.
‘President Trump and Secretary Hegseth are committed to ensuring that the brave American patriots serving our country in uniform are equipped with the resources necessary to counter any threat to the United States,’ White House Spokeswoman Olivia Wales told News Nation.
Transform Your Arms: 5 Effective Exercises to Firm Up Flabby Skin in 30 Days at Any Age
Transform your arm muscles with these effective exercises you can do at home.
>
As we age, losing muscle mass, collagen, and skin elasticity often leads to under-arm flab. Fortunately, targeted strength exercises can help develop lean muscle beneath the skin, promoting a firmer look when combined with other healthy habits.
“Engaging in strength training can enhance muscle development and improve arm shape, though it won’t completely remove loose skin or target arm fat specifically,” says Jacob Siwicki, founder and head coach of Siwicki Fitness. Certified by NCSF and AFAA, Siwicki was a globally ranked Equinox group fitness instructor, a Dartmouth economics graduate, and a former Dartmouth football player. He now shares his expertise on FOX 5 DC and was crowned the top personal trainer in D.C. for 2021. “The key is to focus on building muscle, maintaining a healthy body-fat percentage, consuming adequate protein, and being patient with the process,” he adds.
Toning your arms goes beyond just looks. Strong arms also make everyday activities, like lugging grocery bags, carrying grandchildren, or swinging a golf club or pickleball paddle, more manageable.
We connected with Siwicki to uncover the best exercises for sagging arms, particularly for those over 55. Below, discover five at-home exercises designed to help you get started.

Parramore Market Secures $25,000 Donation Following News 6 Coverage Ahead of Opening
![]()
ORLANDO, Fla. – This past July, viewers met Jennifer Hilaire and the Parramore Market through News 6’s Ashley Garrett. Hilaire has been on a mission to make everyday essentials more accessible to her community. Inspired by this story, a church from Flagler County has offered a substantial donation, promising tens of thousands of dollars to support her cause.
Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, situated in Palm Coast, has pledged to contribute $25,000 to bolster the burgeoning venture, Hilaire shared with News 6.
“Dignity starts here,” boldly proclaims the welcoming message to those entering Parramore Market. Hilaire’s vision is to offer a shopping atmosphere akin to that of a regular grocery store, extending both quality and respect to her consumers.
“I want people to feel,” she expressed passionately. “I want everything to embody what it feels like walking into the Parramore Market.”
Hilaire admitted her surprise when Mt. Calvary Baptist Church initially reached out with their generous offer.
“At first I’m like, this has to be fraud,” she said, laughing.
She said the church sent paperwork asking about the level of need.
“I filled out not knowing what their capacity to give was,” Hilaire said.
Hilaire said she decided to put $25,000 as the requested amount . She considered that amount after last year thru her group The Desire Foundation raising $49,000. The group using that money to feed 6,000 families.
“So I said, you know what, I’m just gonna put 25 thousand,” she said.
The next day, she said, the church sent over a contract approving that amount.
“And I was just like, God — I started shouting in my room. I’m real churchy,” Hilaire said. News 6’s Ashley Garrett responded, “Same,” laughing.
The Parramore Market is set to open on Westmoreland next month and will offer a mix of low-cost and no-cost items, Hilaire said.
She said free items will include produce, baby formula and even laundry detergent — an expense that can quickly add up for families.
“When you go to get your little normal size Tide, that can be anywhere from 10… maybe 15 bucks,” Garrett said during the story. Hilaire added that being able to refill detergent as needed can save money compared with buying new containers.
Hilaire said she had previously shared concerns about how she would continue serving the community financially, but said support has continued to arrive.
“The power of a yes,” she said when talking to Garrett, reflecting on how one opportunity can lead to another.
“Just saying one yes — it’s like you. You said yes to the interview and that opened doors for us to get that funding,” she said. “If they said yes to us, then that’s gonna open more doors for us to feed thousands of people.”
Parramore Market is scheduled to open to the public Sept. 9.

Vann, now facing 17 serious felony charges, including first- and second-degree vehicular manslaughter, assault, aggravated vehicular homicide, child endangerment, DWI, and reckless driving, was apprehended after receiving medical care for accident-related injuries. She is currently held at the Onondaga County Justice Center, with a hefty bail set at $500,000 in cash or a $750,000 bond, according to Syracuse.com’s report.
