World Cup Stars Triumph: New Club Deals for Viral Sensations

0

Nostalgia swept through older football enthusiasts as the World Cup approached, sparking discussions about how the event rarely introduces us to previously unknown players anymore.

The era where a young prodigy or unassuming talent would burst onto the scene, prompting a frenzy among the world’s top clubs eager to secure their signature, seems to have passed.

Today, with unparalleled access to matches and data, clubs typically utilize the World Cup to confirm existing insights about players. This trend is evident in several post-tournament transfers, where clubs pursued players they had already identified prior to the World Cup.

On Sunday, a fervent crowd of Colo-Colo supporters flocked to Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport, eagerly welcoming their World Cup standout, Vozinha, who had arrived to finalize his move.

In this context, Daily Mail Sport examines some post-World Cup transfers, highlighting how standout players from the tournament are poised to make their mark at new clubs following their exceptional displays in North America.

Vozinha

The 40-year-old goalkeeper finally sealed his post-World Cup move to Colo-Colo on Sunday after touching down in Santiago.

‘I’m very happy to be here. And I want to thank the fans for the patience they’ve shown while waiting for me,’ the Cape Verde star told reporters in Chile.

‘See you at the Monumental Stadium.’

It completes a fairytale couple of months for the goalkeeper, who was one of the heroes of Cape Verde’s surprise run to the last-32, before they were beaten 3-2 by Argentina after extra-time.

As well as keeping a clean sheet against Spain and Saudi Arabia, Vozinha made 18 saves across the tournament and outperformed his xG against by 0.9.

His standout performances were among the highlights of Cape Verde’s debut appearance at the World Cup.

At the start of the Spain match in Cape Verde’s World Cup opener, he only had 50,000 followers on Instagram, but after making a memorable seven saves, that number dramatically increased, with Vozinha now having 28.6million followers.

Vozinha was named in FIFA’s team of the tournament to complete a remarkable rise.

His move to Colo-Colo is the most high-profile of his career, after playing for clubs in his homeland, Moldova, Slovakia, Cyprus and Portugal’s second tier.

Vozinha will now look to help Colo-Colo win the league title during his six-month contract, which includes an option of a 12-month extension.

Ismael Saibari

Bayern Munich were keen to stress that their £43million signing of Morocco star Saibari had been part of their long-term planning, rather than a reaction to his World Cup displays.

‘We’re delighted to have secured the services of Ismael Saibari, one of the most exciting forwards at the World Cup,’ said Max Eberl, FC Bayern board member for sport, when Saibari’s move was made official on July 1.

‘Transfers like this don’t happen on the spur of the moment but are the result of long-term planning: the key factor was that we made our position clear to him early on because we were aware of Ismael’s skills and were able to show him a clear future with us from the start.

‘Ismael Saibari will bring extra quality and unpredictability to our attacking play.’

Saibari had led the line for Morocco at the World Cup, with the versatile attacker scoring in all three of their group stage matches.

He was forced off injured in their last-16 win over Canada, resulting in the 25-year-old having to watch from the stands as Morocco lost to France in the quarter-finals.

Saibari had come into the tournament off the back of being named as the Player of the Year in the Eredivisie, having helped PSV Eindhoven secure a third consecutive title.

The Moroccan has now reported to training with Bayern and will be looking to make an impact in the Bundesliga.

Valentin Barco

Chelsea’s signing of Barco was confirmed after the World Cup, but was agreed long before it.

Daily Mail Sport reported back in May that the Blues had agreed to sign the former Brighton full back from their sister club Strasbourg – a 13th deal between the two BlueCo clubs.

Barco, who had been playing as a midfielder in Ligue 1, had earned a call-up to Argentina’s World Cup squad off the back of his performances last season.

The 22-year-old had limited involvement for Argentina on their path to the World Cup final, featuring for just 19 minutes in a group stage match against Jordan.

That still did not stop Barco making an impact on the pitch, with the Argentina hitting the headlines when he clashed with Jude Bellingham after England‘s semi-final defeat at the World Cup.

Barco infuriated the Three Lions after he sprinted across the pitch when Enzo Fernandez equalised late on in the clash.

He ran right in front of several England players and appeared to taunt them, before John Stones reacted by giving him a shove. Barco later also came onto the pitch in the aftermath of Lautaro Martinez’s winning goal.

There were also reports that the new Chelsea star had been winding up the England bench for the entirety of the 90 minutes.

In response to his antics, Bellingham gave the 22-year-old a slap on the back of the head after the full-time whistle as Argentina’s players celebrated, causing a scuffle on the pitch.

The reception Barco receives from English crowds this season will be interesting, while Chelsea fans will be hoping he can make an impact on the field of play.

Johan Manzambi

‘I am very, very happy and I am excited to play with this club,’ Manzambi said after sealing his move from Freiburg to Aston Villa.

‘It’s a very big club in England, and they’re playing in the Champions League. I’ve already played against Aston Villa, and for me, it was the perfect plan.

‘I hope I can play the same as in the World Cup and with Freiburg.

‘I’m sure that with the team, the coach and the staff that I can do the same.’

Manzambi opted for the move to Villa Park over Newcastle, despite the Magpies having a £49million bid accepted and had verbal agreement on terms with the 20-year-old.

The Swiss international had been one of the breakout stars of the World Cup, having initially begun the tournament as an impact substitute before forcing his way into a starting role.

Manzambi scored three goals and provided two assists until his tournament was cruelly ended by a knee injury.

While Manzambi played higher up the pitch for Switzerland, Aston Villa highlighted how he operated in a more deep-lying role for Freiburg. The midfielder had impressed Aston Villa during their preparations for the Europa League Final, even though Freiburg were beaten 3-0 by Unai Emery’s side in May.

Manzambi will be a central player in Aston Villa’s revamped team this summer, with Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans having left the club and Amadou Onana out for a prolonged period with a knee injury.

Tim Payne

Like Vozinha, Payne was catapulted to fame at the World Cup where the New Zealander became a viral sensation.

Argentine content creator called Valen Scarsini, known as ‘El Scarso’, set out to find a player at the 48-team tournament in the US, Mexico and Canada who was unheralded and unknown for most fans.

He then wanted to see just how far his mission to make the player famous could go.

Payne ended up being his pick because the Wellington Phoenix centre-back only had 5,000 followers on Instagram.

Scarsini’s bizarre campaign led to Payne’s follower count exploding, with the 32-year-old now boasting over 5.6million followers.

The interest of a South American audience to Payne and New Zealand’s World Cup campaign carried on, with the defender landing himself a transfer as a result.

Club Olimpia, Paraguay’s biggest club, signed Payne ahead of the All Whites’ first match of the tournament, reportedly paying £430,000 to Wellington Phoenix for his signature.

‘Club Olimpia is one of the biggest clubs in South America, with an incredible history, passionate supporters and ambitions that match its stature, and I am looking forward to rising to that challenge,’ Payne said when confirming his move.

‘For our family, this is something really special. My son, growing up speaking Spanish like his mum did, immersing ourselves in her culture and her family’s world is what makes this so much more than just a football move.’

Payne had also made the point of thanking Scarsini and his followers for their role in his life-changing move.

Payne made his debut for Olimpia on Sunday and marked it with a goal, curling a superb effort into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Lucas Herrington

Herrington saw his World Cup end in heartbreaking fashion after sending a penalty over the crossbar in Australia’s shootout defeat by Egypt in the last-32.

The 18-year-old was quickly offered support by Sweden great Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who praised his courage in stepping up to take the penalty at such a young age.

‘Penalty is like lottery. You score, you become a hero, you don’t score, sadly you become zero,’ Ibrahimovic said.

‘I just want to reach out to Herrington. You’re 18 years old, you’re young, this is just the beginning of your career.

‘You stepping up there, you showed a lot of courage, not everybody will do that. My friend, you’re the best. Don’t listen to the rest. Listen, Herrington, if you want to reach out, I’m here.’

Exactly one month on and Herrington is closing in on a move from Colorado Rapids to the Premier League, with the teenager set to become the most expensive Australian player in history at around £17million.

Herrington, who earned praise for his composed performances at the World Cup, is expected to seal a move to newly promoted Hull City, with their owner Acun Ilicali confirming their interest to the BBC on Saturday.

Asked if Herrington was someone Hull were looking at, Ilicali said: ‘Yes.

‘He’s (got) very big potential. Very young boy. I think (a) future star. We are very close, very close.’

Asked when he thought a decision might be made on Herrington, Ilicali said: ‘One week.’

Heartache Unleashed: Jen Hamilton Exposes Ex’s ‘Diabolical’ Affair with a Grandma

In a bold display of independence and resilience, influencer Jen Hamilton commemorates what she terms “Jendependence,” casting a spotlight on the controversies surrounding her estranged husband, Brian Hamilton. Allegations have surfaced, hinting at Brian’s supposed “double life” entanglement with an older woman.

“On August 4, I faced what could have been a difficult day—it marked what would have been my 14th wedding anniversary. Instead, it was the first anniversary since uncovering my husband’s shocking betrayal,” Jen, age 35, expressed candidly via Instagram this past Saturday, August 8. “To counter the heartache, I organized a gathering with all my colleagues. The turnout was incredible; everyone showed unwavering support and I revealed everything to them.”

Back in June, Jen publicly revealed her separation from Brian, ending their near 14-year union, simultaneously accusing him of leading “a double life with a 56-year-old woman.” As of now, Brian has not addressed or refuted these claims.

In a vivid assertion of taking control, the author of Birth Vibes: Stories and Strategies for an Empowered Birth commemorated the “Jendependence” fête on what was once her wedding anniversary, August 4. Capturing her defiance in a photograph, Jen is seen provocatively giving dual middle-finger salutes to a fire consuming her old bedsheets.

Jen Hamilton

In what appears to be a continuation of transparency, Jen Hamilton shared what seems to be a partial text exchange with Brian Hamilton, post-breakup. “I truly hope you leverage every resource available to you,” Jen, 35, conveyed in a message, a part of a conversation she publicly displayed through an Instagram video shared on Wednesday, July […].

“I burned the bedsheets which held years of my own personal repression and the lies he told. He cannot hurt me anymore,” she insisted. “Boooo to cheating on your loving and faithful wife with a grandma. No offense to grandmas. She just is one.”

Jen mentioned that she is discovering new ways of reframing what has been a very traumatic few months.

“I am getting to the point now that I’m grateful for what this has brought me,” she concluded Saturday’s post. “Because now I get to create my own future instead of living in the knowing that things would never get better for me. I’m so grateful for my friends. And for that night. Happy Jendependence to me.”

Late last month, Jen admitted that there may still be aspects of Brian’s alleged “double life” that she’s not aware of.

“Me, now? Me, big, strong girl. Okay? Me, independent girl. Me, ‘don’t need no man’ girl. Me, ‘get out of bad relationship’ girl. But I feel like I need to get out ahead of something,” Jen joked on July 29. “If anything comes out about other things this guy’s done in my marriage, just listen. Me, now? Me, big, strong girl. Me, independent girl. Me, back then? Me, insecure girl. Me, desperate girl.”

She added, “Yes, he had a double life with a woman who was 56 years old. Yes, I should have left him way earlier — giving myself grace. I am so fortunate to have the means and resources to leave a bad relationship. There are so many women who are unable to do so, whether from finances, resources, etc.”

Jen previously expressed hope that something positive would come out of such a difficult period in her life. She therefore launched the Sisterhood of Solidarity fashion line — featuring clothing and apparel with empowering slogans such as “We Rise Together,” “Keep Going,” and “G.Y.A.U. (Get Your Ass Up)” — to raise money to help women get out of troubled relationships.

Jen Hamilton

Influencer Jen Hamilton is in her carefree era amid her divorce from husband Brian Hamilton. Jen, 37, took to Instagram on Sunday, July 26, to share a mirror selfie in which she showed off her sexy ensemble for a night out: a certifiable black high-neck “revenge” top with sheer patterned sleeves, paired with high-waisted jeans, […]

“One thing that I love to do is take something terrible that is happening and turn it into something good for other people,” Jen explained to her followers on July 23. “What I recognized through this process is that I am so fortunate to be able to get out of a situation that I didn’t need to be in because I have the resources to do so. So many women do not have that.”

As she gets started on her second book, Jen has vowed not to give up Hamilton as her last name because it has become so synonymous with her brand.

“It’s my name now,” she pledged via Instagram on July 27. “I made this name special and I’m gonna keep it.”

Ayodele Fayose Unveils Shocking Link Between Nigeria’s Population Surge and Power Shortages

Ayodele Fayose, Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency, has highlighted a significant link between Nigeria’s surging population and the country’s chronic electricity shortages. He emphasizes that inadequate power supply significantly influences how Nigerians spend their evenings.

Discussing the urgent need to tackle the electricity crisis, the former Ekiti governor pointed out that the absence of reliable power forces many Nigerians to remain indoors after sunset, thus restricting nightlife and outdoor leisure activities.

Fayose noted that with limited entertainment options available at night, many individuals might find themselves spending more time with their spouses, a situation he believes contributes to Nigeria’s escalating population.

He also argued that enhancing electricity supply would pave the way for a more vibrant nightlife and boost business and recreational pursuits, offering Nigerians alternatives beyond staying inside their homes.

“We need to address this electricity issue in Nigeria. At that level, the people have no other attractions. Nothing else attracts them after seven o’clock. Darkness falls, and everyone engages with their spouses, leading to a population boom.”

The simple problem is because there’s lack of electricity. People go to bed early. Their mind is simply prepared that, well, if this is the only available recreation, let me remain here. But when we address this electricity, there will be nightlife. There will be recreation outside your wife,” he said.

The remarks have also renewed conversations about the need for reliable electricity and better recreational opportunities across Nigeria.

Tragic Loss: Ugandan Football Star David Owori Fatally Attacked by Robbers Near His Residence

0

In a tragic incident, Ugandan soccer sensation David Owori has been fatally attacked in what appeared to be a robbery.

The 27-year-old captain of SC Villa met his untimely end when a mob violently assaulted him on August 4 outside his residence in Makindye, a neighborhood in Kampala’s suburbs, as explained by Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala, according to NBC News.

Authorities are diligently working to track down the suspects, who allegedly assaulted Owori to pilfer his cellphone along with other possessions, as reported by the BBC.

Discovering Owori unconscious, concerned bystanders promptly took him to Albert Cook Hospital for urgent medical attention.

“Around 2 a.m., he was moved to Case Hospital for further treatment,” Kawala informed New Vision, “where he was subsequently declared deceased.”

Case Hospital shared on X that Owori died from a “severe and irreversible brain and head injury.”

Shortly after the devastating news, his club team spoke out.

“We call upon the relevant security and law enforcement agencies to urgently pursue, apprehend, and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime,” the team wrote on their website. “This senseless act has robbed the Club and the country of a committed captain and a promising sportsman, and it must not go unanswered.”

“The Club undertakes to stand with the family,” the message continued, “and to ensure that David is accorded a decent and dignified send-off.”

Owori, whose nickname was Colgate, was honored by friends, family and fans.

“Our deepest condolences and prayers are with his family,” SC Villa wrote on X. “Rest in peace, Captain.”

Owori was not “just a footballer,” The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) noted in a statement. “He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation…We have lost a son, a leader and a star. His light on and off the pitch will never be forgotten.”

Following his death, he was honored with a moment of silence on Aug. 6 at the FUFA Super 8 match.

A spokesperson from the Kampala Metropolitan Police did not immediately reply to a request for comment from Oxygen.

Record-Breaking 4th of July Fireworks at National Mall Marks Historic Celebration

0

Nearly two months have passed since President Trump declared that Washington, D.C. would host the “LARGEST FIREWORKS SHOW IN HISTORY.” This week, Guinness World Records made it official, confirming the event’s record-breaking status.

According to Guinness World Records, “The largest firework display consists of 840,537 fireworks, and was achieved by Freedom 250 and Pyrotecnico, Inc (both USA) at an event organized by Event Strategies Inc in Washington D.C., USA, on 4 July 2026.” Their confirmation appeared on their website, cementing this dazzling event in history.

Despite unforeseen weather conditions that prompted the evacuation of spectators from the National Mall, the fireworks spectacle went on. Starting just before midnight, it attracted a crowd of hundreds of thousands who braved the elements to witness the monumental display in the heart of Washington, D.C.

Before the fireworks show, President Trump delivered a brief speech as part of the “Salute to America” celebration, commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary. This event was a grand centerpiece of the day’s festivities.

When the fireworks finally lit up the night sky, the show lasted for an impressive 40 minutes, captivating the audience with its sheer scale and splendor.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum explained in June that the fireworks would be launched from several sites because of its immense scale.

“Normally the fireworks are set off right along here,” he told the Washington Reporter of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

“This year, because of the size and scale of the thing, there are so many locations where the fireworks are going to be going off, including barges,” he explained.

The White House launched Freedom 250 as a public-private partnership months ago and the president serves as chair of the initiative.

The previous record holder for largest fireworks celebration was a megachurch’s 2016 New Year’s Eve show, which featured 810,904 fireworks, according to The Washington Post.

“On July 4th, America came together to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday with the largest fireworks display in history — over 850,000 fireworks lighting up the National Mall and the Potomac River, and miles around in a 40-minute spectacular,” Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez shared in a statement with Fox News Digital.

Alvarez added, “This historic display shattered the previous global benchmark and stands as a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and pride as we begin our nation’s next 250 years. Freedom 250 is honored to have brought this moment to millions of Americans, and we thank everyone who made it possible.”

“No other president in history could have accomplished the incredible feat that President Trump did at our Nation’s historic 250th birthday celebration, which included an incredible air show, a record-breaking fireworks display, and an inspiring speech delivered before hundreds of thousands of American patriots,” the White House said in a statement, according to the Post.

Chicago White Sox Honor Ozzie Guillén by Retiring No. 13 Jersey

0

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox honored the legendary Ozzie Guillén by retiring his No. 13 jersey before Saturday’s face-off with Cleveland, celebrating his dual legacy as former manager and shortstop.

At 62, Guillén, now a vibrant voice on White Sox broadcasts, made history as the 13th individual and uniquely, the team’s first former manager to receive this prestigious honor. His number now graces the facade of Rate Field’s second deck, marking a lasting tribute.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

A triumphant chapter in his career, Guillén’s tenure with the White Sox began in earnest as a dynamic three-time All-Star. Starting his 16-year major league journey with Chicago, he captured the AL Rookie of the Year award in 1985 at just 21 and clinched a Gold Glove in 1990.

During his 13-year playing stint with the Sox, Guillén posted a .265 batting average, notched 24 home runs, drove in 565 RBIs, and amassed 163 stolen bases across 1,743 regular-season games. After his time in Chicago, he wrapped his playing career with Baltimore, Atlanta, and Tampa Bay, retiring in 2000 with a career .264 average, featuring 28 homers and 619 RBIs.

Guillén’s journey came full circle when he returned to Chicago as manager from 2004 to 2011. His leadership culminated in guiding the White Sox to their last World Series championship in 2005. Across eight seasons, he achieved an impressive managerial record of 678-617.

Guillén was introduced in front of the White Sox dugout by A.J Pierzynski and Paul Konerko, stars on the 2005 White Sox team that rolled to an 11-1 record in that postseason. Other former teammates and players were also in attendance, as well as White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf.

“I’ve never been nervous playing baseball,” Guillén said. “I’ve never been nervous managing baseball. But today I am very, very nervous because this is a different moment.

“Today I’m not here as a manager. Today I’m here as a grateful man given this opportunity.”

In a statement, Reinsdorf said: “From the moment he joined this organization in spring training 1985, Ozzie Guillén has been one of a kind.”

Guillén was electric as a player and outspoken, often fiery, as a manager. The Venezuela native never shied away from bluntness – and profanity – in assessing players, plays, games or whatever.

Konerko said Guillén was “passionate” and “never had trouble telling anyone something that was wrong.”

Guillén also managed the Miami Marlins in 2012 and was fired after one season after his team went 69-93. Not only the record, but backlash caused by Guillen’s awkward praise of former Cuban strongman Fidel Castro contributed to his dismissal in South Florida.

On Saturday, Guillén was joined by his wife, Ibis, onstage, with family members including his three sons, seated in front of him. He wore a dark suit with a prominent Venezuelan flag lapel pin.

Meeting with reporters, Guillén called out his Venezuelan heritage and his selection of uniform No. 13 as something linked to the country’s baseball tradition.

He saluted nine-time All-Star infielder Dave Conceptión, who wore No. 13 over 19 seasons with Cincinnati as an inspiration. He called out current Venezuelan Atlanta outfield Ronald Acuña Jr. for continuing with the tradition of wearing No. 13.

“I think 13 belongs to my country,” Guillén said. “And to me in Venezuela 13 is a lucky number and Americans did not believe what a lucky number that is.”

Rapid Hip Mobility Rediscovery: 4 Bed Exercises Outperform Stretching for Seniors Over 60

0

For older adults experiencing stiffness upon waking, bed exercises offer a remarkable remedy.

>

There are numerous reasons why some people prefer exercises that can be done from the comfort of their beds. These exercises effectively stretch and tone muscles, enhance core stability, boost flexibility, and increase blood circulation. Plus, almost everyone has access to a mattress, which eliminates the necessity for gym equipment. This method of exercise proves ideal for individuals recovering from injuries or those needing joint mobility without the strain of weights.

Nikkii Behrens, the visionary behind Rare Street Pilates and Nikkii Health, shares insights on four essential bed exercises designed to rejuvenate hip mobility faster than post-60 stretching routines. Excitingly enough, these exercises allow you to check off your workout agenda while still nestled in your bed!

“As we age, a natural decline in hip mobility can occur due to a combination of factors such as reduced muscle mass, joint stiffness, lower levels of physical activity, and alterations in connective tissues. Many individuals also spend extended periods sitting down, resulting in tight hip flexors and inactive glute muscles. Limited hip mobility isn’t just confined to the hips themselves—it can lead to a shorter stride during walking, diminished balance, lower back pain, poor posture, and make everyday activities like climbing stairs, getting out of bed, bending to tie shoes, or standing from a chair significantly more challenging. The encouraging news is that mobility can be improved at any age with consistent, gentle movements,” Behrens explains.

Bed exercises eliminate the fear of having to get down on the floor, making them an ideal choice for those over 60 who experience morning stiffness, reduced confidence, or have limited mobility. The emphasis is on regularity rather than intensity; just five to ten minutes each morning, moving your hips through their full range of motion, can significantly enhance mobility, reduce stiffness, and assist in maintaining independence.

“Focus on slow, controlled movements, breathe steadily throughout, and never push into pain. Small amounts of movement performed regularly are far more effective than occasional intense stretching,” Behrens adds.

Knee Hugs (Single Knee-to-Chest)

“This gently mobilizes the hip joint, stretches the glutes and lower back, and helps reduce morning stiffness without placing strain on the body,” Behrens tells us.

  1. Lie flat on your back with bent knees.
  2. Gently bring one knee toward your chest, holding over the shin or behind the thigh.
  3. Slowly lower.
  4. Repeat on the other side.

5 Daily Exercises That Restore Hip Mobility Faster Than Floor Stretches After 55

Windshield Wipers

“This encourages gentle rotation through the hips while also improving mobility through the lower spine and pelvis—movements we rely on for walking and changing direction,” Behrens explains.

  1. Lie flat on your back with bent knees and feet hip-width apart on the mattress.
  2. Keep your shoulders relaxed as you allow both knees to fall to one side.
  3. Return to the center.
  4. Allow them to fall to the other side.

6 Morning Exercises That Restore Hip Strength Faster Than Floor Stretches After 55

Supine Lying Twist

“This movement improves rotational mobility through the hips, pelvis and lower spine—all essential for walking efficiently, turning, getting in and out of a car, and reducing stiffness after long periods of sitting or sleeping,” Behrens tells us. “It also provides a gentle stretch through the glutes, outer hip and lower back while encouraging coordinated movement between the hips and trunk.”

  1. Lie flat on your back with your arms out to the sides for support.
  2. Bring one knee in toward your chest.
  3. Gently guide it across your body while keeping your shoulders resting on the mattress.
  4. Hold for a few slow breaths before returning to the center.
  5. Repeat on the other side.

5 Short Workouts That Keep You Stronger Than Most 30-Year-Olds After 50

Figure Four Stretch

“This targets the deep muscles around the hip, including the piriformis and glutes, helping improve external hip rotation, which is essential for comfortable walking, getting in and out of the car and everyday functional movement,” Behrens points out.

  1. Lie flat on your back with both knees bent.
  2. Cross one ankle over the opposite knee to create a figure four shape.
  3. Remain in this position as you hold the stretch. Or, gently draw your supporting leg toward you for a deeper stretch.
  4. Repeat on the other side.

Environmental Threat Unveiled as Ships Depart the Strait of Hormuz

0

The potential economic upheaval from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has sparked widespread discussion. However, the substantial ecological risks tied to the prolonged blockage of ships have largely been ignored.

Our latest study reveals a looming environmental danger: over 1,500 commercial vessels stranded in the Gulf since February have been gathering a variety of marine biofouling species on their hulls.

With the strait now open, these ships could carry these organisms to new ports, risking a massive international biosecurity crisis akin to a “super-spreader” event.

These unwanted visitors — alien marine plants, animals, parasites, and diseases — can wreak havoc on local ecosystems, fishing industries, and aquaculture, leading to severe ecological and economic repercussions.

Yet, this scenario isn’t the first instance where shipping interruptions have led to significant biofouling accumulations on dormant vessels.

Shipping disruptions

Global merchant vessel traffic is the main mode of transport for commodities, and researchers have identified 24 choke points in maritime trade.

But 20 of these have alternative routes, meaning shipping can be managed by rerouting vessels. This can take longer and cost more but avoids mass layups.

Only four choke points have no alternative routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, the Oresund Strait in the Baltic Sea, the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits out of the Black Sea, and the Bohai Strait in the Bohai Sea.

Disruptions at choke points can be caused by conflicts and wars (Strait of Hormuz, Suez Canal), terrorism and piracy (Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea, Malacca Strait between Malaysia and Indonesia), maritime accidents (Suez Canal, 2021) and environmental impacts such as drought (Panama Canal in 2019 and 2023).

But disruptions can also be intentional. At any time, around 1% of the global commercial fleet is deliberately laid up because ships are taken out of service due to economic oversupply, seasonal market dynamics or the need for maintenance and upgrades.

Economic downturns such as the global financial crisis in 2008 have led to mass vessel layups following a sharp decline in global imports and exports. Thousands of vessels — about 10% of global container vessels and 25% of refrigerated vessels – were lying idle at anchor or pulled out of service.

The oil crisis during the 1970s laid up 466 tankers globally.

Large fishing fleets undergo seasonal layups associated with regulatory closures and weather-related limitations. For example, the conservation-related fishing closure in the South China Sea between May and August results in thousands of vessels laid up each year.

Similarly, fishing fleets in the North Pacific and Bering Sea operate within restricted seasonal windows and spend the off-season in a few high-density ports.

Threats to New Zealand and Australia

Stationary vessels can accumulate large amounts of biofouling in a short time, especially in tropical waters. When vessels subsequently leave locations, they take those species to new regions, potentially delivering the next alien animal or plant pest, parasite or disease.

The Persian/Arabian Gulf is home to more than 50 marine non-native species, and many species native to the region have already been introduced across the globe.

While New Zealand and Australia are not likely to receive a large number of vessels trapped in and near the Strait of Hormuz in the first month after reopening, research suggests numerous ships carrying potentially invasive species will be arriving within a year.

Both New Zealand and Australia have well-developed biosecurity rules and strong regulatory frameworks in place. This includes early detection and rapid response capabilities if ships with biofouling risk factors are identified.

For example, Biosecurity New Zealand was able to screen and take action when cruise ships were laid up during the COVID pandemic. Affected ships had to leave New Zealand waters or conduct maintenance to ensure their hulls and niche areas (propellers and rudders) were at an acceptable biosecurity standard of cleanliness.

However, management of biofouling on commercial vessels arriving for a short time remains challenging. We recommend the following actions to manage the biofouling risk for vessels arriving from the Strait of Hormuz region.

  • Inspection to estimate the level of biofouling prior to departure. Several services exist in the region to assist in this task. Use of environmental DNA sampling near vessels could assist in identifying the level of biosecurity threat.
  • When possible, in-water cleaning prior to departure from the Persian/Arabian Gulf region. However, this should capture ship biofouling and coating debris rather than further expose the environment to new introductions and contaminants. Safe and effective cleaning at the earliest opportunity will decrease bioinvasion threats.
  • Forecasting of vessel routes, specifically identifying the first port after departing the gulf, and communicating with port and national authorities to assess biosecurity risks.
  • National authorities and ports that receive vessels should implement early detection and rapid response using environmental DNA or low-cost, rapid assessments to identify new invasion events sufficiently early to respond.
  • Authorities should establish rapid alerts and dissemination networks to share biosecurity events.

The opportunity to mitigate the impacts of this potential super-spreader event, and other similar events, requires global cooperation and action to protect our environments, economies and social values from marine biological invasions and their effects.

Heroic Utah Helicopter Pilots Tragically Killed in Wildfire Fight

0

Saturday brought tragic news from Utah as authorities confirmed the deaths of two helicopter pilots involved in wildfire operations.

The incident claimed the lives of these heroic pilots when their Sikorsky Skycrane helicopter crashed on Friday morning, as reported by the Sevier County Sheriff.

These pilots were bravely engaged in battling a blaze within the sprawling Fishlake National Forest.

Their helicopter crash ignited yet another fire, which merged with the original inferno to devastate nearly 174 square miles.

While the pilots’ identities remain undisclosed, officials noted their employment with Helicopter Transport Services, a company contracted by the US Forest Service for this perilous task.

Initially officials said they were unable to reach the crash site because of the fire.

Then, on Saturday, crews were able to enter the area and confirmed the deaths, according to the Sevier County sheriff and coroner.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate once its team can examine the wreckage. It will likely take the NTSB a year or more to determine the cause.

Numerous fires also were burning in other parts of the West, including one that closed part of Mount Rainier National Park in Washington.

The National Park Service shut down access to the Sunrise and White River areas of the park after a new wildfire burned less than a third of a square mile.

Firefighters were working to gain control of it.

Larger fires near Spokane, Washington, have now burned more than 15.63 square miles, but firefighters constructed more than 75 miles of containment line to help control those flames.

Meanwhile in Oregon, hot and dry conditions helped an uncontrolled fire spread beyond 30 square miles.

Firefighters were still trying to identify the best places to set up containment lines around the Wrights Spring fire as they mourned the death of 47-year-old Jason Ensign, who was killed while operating a bulldozer for a timber company.

The blaze grew rapidly Thursday and cut off Ensign’s escape route.

And north of the border in British Columbia, more than 20,000 people had to evacuate ahead of another fast-moving wildfire.

Public Outrage Unleashed Over Royal Funeral Plans for Disgraced Prince Andrew

Despite his significant fall from grace and the removal of his titles, Andrew Mountbatten–Windsor is set to receive a royal ceremonial funeral.

According to senior Whitehall sources, as reported by The Mail on Sunday, the former Duke of York remains included on a confidential government roster of royals entitled to high-profile funerals. This remains true even after he became a private citizen in the wake of revelations about his association with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender.

Insiders reveal that this contentious decision is incorporated into the Government’s detailed ‘bridge’ plans. These plans, meticulously prepared in advance, dictate the funeral arrangements for Royal Family members.

Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022 adhered to ‘Operation London Bridge’, while Prince Philip’s farewell followed ‘Operation Forth Bridge’, named after a famous bridge near Edinburgh.

While specifics of Mountbatten–Windsor’s funeral plans are yet to be disclosed, royal commentators suggest the service will likely take place at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel, in line with the farewell ceremonies for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

The 14th–century chapel also serves as the venue for baptisms and royal weddings, including that of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2018.

It is anticipated that Mountbatten–Windsor would be buried at the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore, a 33–acre private cemetery in Home Park, Windsor.

Others buried there include King Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne in disgrace in 1936 to marry American socialite Wallis Simpson, who is also buried there.

It is not expected that the plan for 66–year–old Mountbatten–Windsor, which is overseen by the Cabinet Office and kept under constant review, will be required for some time, given that he appears to be in good health.

But on Saturday US lawyer Gloria Allred, who has represented 27 of Epstein’s victims, said: ‘Andrew has brought disgrace upon the Royal Family and the UK as a result of his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein.

‘Under these circumstances, the question arises as to why this man should be afforded the honour of a royal funeral. What kind of message would such a ceremony send to Epstein’s victims?

‘Additionally, why should UK taxpayers bear the burden of paying his expenses either in life or after his death?’

Alicia Kearns, Tory shadow Home Office minister, said: ‘There are no circumstances under which Andrew should be afforded a royal funeral.

‘He should live out his days far from public life, and the police and CPS should ensure their investigations into him are robust and don’t drag on. All such plans should be revoked immediately.’

Norman Baker, a former government minister and expert in royal finances, said: ‘This must be an oversight. Mr Mountbatten–Windsor is a commoner and should in no way be getting any sort of royal funeral.’

The ‘bridge’ plan for Andrew is likely to have been revised in the past year to take into account that he is no longer a working royal. In a humiliating blow, King Charles stripped his brother of his HRH style and prince title in November last year.

Although the details of the arrangements for Mountbatten-Windsor¿s funeral are unknown, royal experts believe a service would be held at St George¿s Chapel in Windsor Castle

Royal experts believe Mountbatten–Windsor’s funeral would be similar to that of Princess Margaret, who died in 2002 aged 71 after a stroke and cardiac complications. A 400–strong congregation, including 30 royals, attended a private service in St George’s Chapel. Flags were flown at half–mast at all royal residences throughout a six–day period of mourning.

Ahead of the funeral, the princess’s coffin was laid in Kensington Palace, where her family paid their respects. It was draped in Margaret’s standard and a spray of white lilies and roses and was then taken to the Queen’s Chapel at St James’s Palace.

The coffin was then driven to Windsor where police had to erect barriers for 3,000 people to watch the cortege enter the castle gates.

In a break from royal tradition, which is unlikely to feature in Mountbatten–Windsor’s plans, Princess Margaret was later cremated at Slough Crematorium.

While not an official state or public occasion, the funeral was a major royal event that was accompanied by a costly policing and security operation.

One delicate matter the former Duke may have to ponder in the coming years is who will act as pallbearers during his ceremony.

Servicemen from regiments associated with members of the Royal Family normally have the honour of carrying their coffin.

Eight sergeants from the Royal Highland Fusiliers, of which Princess Margaret was the colonel–in–chief, carried her coffin.

Mountbatten–Windsor served in the Royal Navy, including during the Falklands War as a Sea King helicopter co–pilot, and was the honorary colonel of the Grenadier Guards, the Royal Irish Regiment, and the Royal Regiment of Scotland. However, he lost his military titles amid the Epstein scandal.

Retired Rear Admiral Chris Parry, who captained the Royal Navy’s HMS Fearless, said he believed the Navy would ask for volunteers to act as pallbearers.

‘The guy doesn’t relinquish being a naval officer,’ he said. ‘He wasn’t thrown out. He had a Falklands medal and you can’t take that away from him and he deserves the credit for that. If somebody said to me ‘Would you do it?’, I’d do it.’

US lawyer Spencer Kuvin, who represented nine of Epstein’s victims, said: ‘Taxpayers should not ever be funding a funeral for a private individual. No public money should be used to benefit him during death. It’s an embarrassment to the Crown.’

Tory MP Joe Robertson said: ‘Public funds should not bankroll Andrew Mountbatten–Windsor’s funeral. He has lost all his royal titles and publicly funded roles for a reason. He is an ordinary citizen – one who still has a lot of questions to answer – and his funeral should be paid for privately just like everyone else.’

The Cabinet Office and Buckingham Palace declined to comment.

Mountbatten–Windsor did not respond to a request to comment.
