Evanston, Illinois, is taking action to support families in need this holiday season.
Beginning Monday, the city is inviting residents to join in a Holiday Food, Book, and Toy Drive.
The community can contribute by donating new, unwrapped toys and essential food items at various drop-off locations throughout Evanston.
In addition to physical donations, residents have the option to make financial contributions online.
The initiative runs until December 1, giving community members ample time to participate and help make a difference.

Umar Hussein Alkhalifa Al Enizi, aged 24, entered a plea of not guilty today regarding the murder of Troy Edward Vandenberg, which occurred in Browns Plains, south of Brisbane, on September 17, 2021.
The Queensland Supreme Court jury was informed that Vandenberg, 25, and Al Enizi were strangers to one another.

Prosecutor Samantha O’Rourke explained to the jury that there is no dispute over the fact that Vandenberg died just meters from his residence, succumbing to injuries inflicted when Al Enizi allegedly drove an Audi into him.
“This trial centers on the reasoning behind Mr. Vandenberg being hit by the defendant with the vehicle: that is the issue at hand,” O’Rourke articulated during her opening remarks.
“The Crown contends that the act was deliberate.”
The incident started about 2.30pm that day near the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane’s inner southern suburbs.

“Something happened between the two of them that frustrated Mr Vandenberg,” O’Rourke said.
Vandenberg, wearing only underwear, got out of his car at the traffic lights and approached Al Enizi and told him to “open the f—ing door” and hit Al Enizi’s car when he did not do so.
“The pair threw punches at each other but (no witnesses) saw the punches actually connect. The men separated and then went back to their cars,” O’Rourke said.
Both men ended up driving off in the same direction to their respective homes.

At 2.55pm the pair ended up at a housing estate at Logan with Vandenberg following Al Enizi and kicking his car at an intersection.
Witnesses would testify Vandenberg later picked up a hammer and was standing on the roadway before Al Enizi drove across two lanes in order to strike Vandenberg with his car, O’Rourke said.
The jurors were told they would see CCTV footage of Vandenberg being thrown into the air by the impact.
Al Enizi had simply responded in a split second to an impending threat from Vandenberg, who had a hammer and was behaving in an “aggressive unhinged, and terrifying” manner, defence barrister Saul Holt told the jury.
“Troy Vandenberg ran out from the other side (of the road) on a path to intercept Mr Al Enizi’s car as it was driving through and Mr Vandenberg threw a hammer at full force towards his windscreen,” Holt said.
Vandenberg was a muscular man who said on the phone “some black curry-munching c— has just cut me off”, after his first encounter with Al Enizi, Holt said.
Holt told the jury they could find the witnesses were inconsistent about Al Enizi crossing two lanes in order to hit Vandenberg.
The trial continues before Acting Justice Peter Applegarth.
The individual who sexually assaulted Grace Tame, a former recipient of the Australian of the Year award, is set to undergo a hearing to determine his competency to face harassment charges.
In March 2023, Nicolaas Ockert Bester denied three charges of using a communication service to intimidate, harass, or offend.
Authorities allege that Bester, a former educator, posted messages on social media targeting Tame, now aged 30, in the months of April, July, and August of 2022.

Today, Bester, 73, was absent from a brief session at Hobart Magistrates Court regarding the case.
Magistrate Andrew McKee has scheduled the hearing for February 2.
It is expected to run for a full day.
Bester’s lawyer Todd Kovacic confirmed to AAP the hearing was about his client’s fitness to face the substantive allegations and will determine “what happens next” in the matter.
Kovacic, who appeared in court by telephone, said it was the plan for Bester to appear in person for February’s hearing.
An application for a professor to give evidence via video link at the hearing was granted.

The case against Bester has been plagued by delays since he was charged in 2022.
Kovacic has previously told the court Bester had been diagnosed with vascular dementia and his fitness to face a hearing was a live issue.
Bester was convicted and sentenced in 2011 to two years and 10 months in jail for abusing Tame when she was a student at his school and for possessing child exploitation material.
He served one year and nine months.
Tame, who has attended court on previous occasions, was the 2021 Australian of the Year and has advocated for abuse survivors.

In HBO’s gripping series “True Detective,” Matthew McConaughey’s character, Rustin “Rust” Cohle, emerges as a complex figure—brilliant yet profoundly cynical. As Season 1 unfolds, Cohle finds himself under suspicion of being a serial killer. Reflecting on the ominous last words of drug manufacturer Reggie Ledoux, portrayed by Charles Halford, the narrative introduces the philosophical concept of Friedrich Nietzsche’s eternal recurrence. “Someone once told me time is a flat circle. Everything we’ve ever done or will do, we’re gonna do over and over and over again. And that little boy and that little girl, they’re gonna be in that room again. And again. And again. Forever,” he recounts.
Though Cohle’s recollection slightly misquotes the original statement, Ledoux indeed mentions, “I know what happens next… you’ll do this again. Time is a flat circle.” Rust’s sarcastic retort, “What is that, Nietzsche?! Shut the f*** up,” underscores the philosophical undertones running through the series. Both Ledoux and Cohle echo Nietzsche’s idea of eternal recurrence, suggesting a cyclical nature of existence where life’s moments repeat endlessly, encountering the same people and events.
This philosophical thread draws from Nietzsche’s work “Thus Spoke Zarathustra.” In it, Nietzsche, through the character of Zarathustra, presents eternal recurrence as potentially positive—provided one’s life is meaningful enough to warrant repetition. However, for Rust, burdened by years of suffering, this concept only highlights life’s bleakness.
It’s from his work of fiction, “Thus Spoke Zarathustra.” Nietzsche, speaking as Zarathustra, saw this as a good thing on a conditional basis — you have to make your life worthy of living over and over again, but if you do, imagine the rewards you’ll reap. Rust, descending into depression driven by decades of agony, can only see the dark side of such a notion.
Rust Cohle sees Friedrich Nietzsche’s statement as a negative one

While Friedrich Nietzsche himself might find the notion of reliving the same events the same way every time fun, Rust sees the Nietzschean concept of an endlessly reoccurring life as nightmarish. Considering what he’s seen and done, that’s not surprising. Rust’s success traps him; life becomes an endless cycle of horrible crime — horrible criminal — application of sometimes-faulty justice. He falls into depression, alcoholism and PTSD, isolating himself from everyone and everything. Time does, indeed, become a flat circle for him.
At the end of Season 1 of “True Detective,” Rust’s belief justice is restored when he and Marty finally manage to figure out who really killed Dora. It turns out her murder — along with the deaths the cops were trying to pin on Rust — are the handiwork of Errol Childress (Glenn Fleshler) and the Tuttle family cult. Errol is killed, Rust is reunited with his family and the future generally looks brighter — and order has prevailed, in spite of any imperfections Rust or the world at large might have.
Los Angeles often gets a bad reputation, much like Generation Z. Enter Rachel Sennott with her HBO comedy, I Love LA, aiming to shake things up—metaphorically, like an earthquake.
In this new series, the star of Shiva Baby isn’t looking to revolutionize comedy; rather, she’s focused on making audiences laugh, sharing a tale about a friend group that might resemble your own, and perhaps even triggering a bit of an existential crisis along the way. Surprisingly, this blend works exceptionally well.
The series centers around 27-year-old Maia (played by Sennott), a talent manager living in Los Angeles with her boyfriend, portrayed by Josh Hutcherson, and her best friends, played by Jordan Firstman and True Whitaker. The plot thickens when an old friend from her past, played by Odessa A’Zion, reappears, throwing Maia’s life into a whirlwind. While it doesn’t attempt to reinvent the narrative wheel, the show excels in delivering a smart, humorous, and relatable story about the trials and joys of being in your twenties.
As someone who has lived in Los Angeles for a few years, I approached the show with hopeful anticipation, perhaps unfairly influenced by my admiration for Sennott’s previous work. When a new project set in your city surfaces, there’s always a lingering skepticism about its execution. However, I Love LA manages to avoid the pitfalls that could have plagued it on other platforms.

The charm of I Love LA lies in its blend of out-of-touch yet oddly relatable humor. Its jokes, tailored for Angelenos, transcend clichés about traffic on the 405 or the exorbitant parking fees at the Grove. While the humor resonates deeply with locals, its appeal isn’t limited to them. Anyone who’s ever dealt with frenemies, felt adrift in their mid-twenties, or developed a fondness for matcha and smartphones will find themselves laughing at the show’s hilariously exaggerated scenarios and plotlines.
In this show, Sennott nails finding the funny in the awkward, horrific, and slightly traumatizing experiences of being in the liminal space that is your twenties. The pressure to succeed in your career, your love life, maintain and keep up with your friendships, workout, eat healthy, and stay up to date on everything happening in the world — which is a shitshow, by the way — is encapsulated by the comedian in eight short episodes. Oh, and do it with the world watching you through the small box in your hand. If Girls is a generation-defining comedy for millennials, Sennott may have just made the equivalent for Gen Z in I Love LA. It’s only slightly ironic given that the actress is a millennial, although on the cusp between the two classifications.
Traditionally, I watch a show waiting to find the standout performance, hoping to see a single player emerge from the pack as the clear one to watch. I came into I Love LA thinking it would be A’Zion, hoping it would be Firstman, but secretly questioning if it would be Whitaker. In the end, there is no true winner in the ensemble as each gets their fair share of breakout lines, scenes, and episodes that leave the audience wanting more of their character.

Firstman, who plays a desperate stylist, does come out swinging in Episode 1, as does Whitaker, who plays the daughter of a famous film director, not far from her own real-life experience as the child of Forest Whitaker. Both actors appear and bring down the house in the brief moment they first appear on screen with Sennott, setting an impossibly high bar for A’Zion, who graces the screen with her presence later in the episode.
When A’Zion — who also grew up in Hollywood as the daughter of Pamela Adlon — does finally appears, running out to surprise Sennott’s character on her birthday, she sets it straight that the high bar set by her costars is easily going to be met. In truth, each actor brings a little something spectacular to their character, making the most of every morsel they’re given, whether it’s a deadpan look to camera or a full-on improvised line at the expense of their character or another. It makes a show that could be fun with the wrong cast feel so damn good with the right cast.
Rachel Sennott may not know it but she has struck absolute gold with this group. This ensemble takes excellent writing and hilarious premises to new heights and makes me even more excited to see where the story goes in a second season. It’s a friend group I might not exactly want to be a part of, but certainly one I enjoy watching and think you will too.

Utah County officials are grappling with rising expenses, increasing media spotlight, and growing public dissatisfaction regarding the county’s responsibility to fund defense attorneys for Tyler Robinson, accused of murdering Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
Commissioner Amelia Powers Gardner, one of the trio of elected officials managing county policy, operations, and budgets, revealed that Utah County has already allocated “just over $250,000” to the case. This amount is anticipated to double by the end of the year and might surge to approximately $5 million within the next 18 months.
“The Constitution guarantees the right to a competent defense,” stated Powers Gardner. “To maintain a society rooted in justice, it’s crucial that justice is both fair and impartial.”
She mentioned receiving feedback from residents frustrated about taxpayer money funding Robinson’s defense. Nonetheless, she stressed the county’s constitutional obligation and the fiscal prudence of ensuring a fair trial, particularly in a case that could involve the death penalty.

Powers Gardner said part of her role is keeping the community united after a tragedy that affected residents across political lines.
“My job is also to be a leader for my community, and that’s what I have focused on,” she said. “You have to keep in mind, not everybody who was traumatized that day was a Charlie Kirk supporter. There were hundreds of people there that were protesting at that event and were just as traumatized that they saw a father and husband murdered.”
“Our community had a horrific event take place, and that horrific event has affected people across party and ideological lines. Our job in local government is not to play politics, but to take care of all of our citizens — the ones that voted for me and the ones that didn’t. They’re still my constituents, and I work hard for them.”

The judge deemed Robinson eligible for public defense, requiring the county to hire a death-penalty-certified team after all local attorneys declined the county’s standard contract.
“Because it is Charlie Kirk, we sent out that standard contract and got zero attorneys who were willing to take the case for our standard contract,” Powers Gardner said. “It’s a very emotionally and politically charged case. And because of that, none of our usual defense attorneys were willing to take the case.”
She added that due to this being a “very high profile case,” most of their usual contracts were not valid.

“That is very frustrating, but keep in mind that if there’s any way that the defense in the future could claim that we scrimped or saved or undercut their ability to have a competent defense, that means appeals. And appeals mean more money and more time. It’s actually the most prudent use of taxpayer dollars to give Tyler Robinson a competent defense the first time.”
Powers Gardner said the county tried joining Utah’s Aggravated Murder Defense Fund in 2024, a pool designed to offset defense costs in capital cases, but was denied. At the time of the killing, Powers Gardner said the county’s reserve for aggravated-murder cases had just $31 left.
Powers Gardner estimated the impact at about $5 per taxpayer spread over the course of the case, which she estimated could be roughly two years.

Beyond legal costs, Powers Gardner detailed new security and operational burdens.
“Just housing Tyler Robinson in our jail is very expensive… He will be transferred using armored vehicles, andwe will have to clear buildings around the courthouse, and we will have to cover that because there have been threats,” she said.
The county has implemented active-shooter training for the first time and continues to absorb overtime costs.
“In six weeks, we’ve used $250,000 on this,” she said. “And we haven’t even started appearing in court yet.”
Powers Gardner credited Gov. Spencer Cox for being “incredibly supportive,” noting that he was personally engaged and communicative in the days following the shooting.

Robinson faces a top charge of aggravated murder, which carries a potential death penalty.
Prosecutors allege Robinson used his grandfather’s Mauser .30-06 rifle to climb onto a campus rooftop and shoot Kirk once in the neck while Kirk was speaking at a Utah Valley University campus event on Sept. 10.
