Non-College Grads’ Unemployment Nears 23-Year Low

0

Young workers without college degrees are benefiting from one of the strongest labor markets they have seen in decades, with unemployment near historic lows, according to a Burning Glass Institute analysis cited by the Wall Street Journal.

The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday evening that the data points to a particularly resilient job market for 22- to 34-year-olds who do not hold a diploma from a college or university.

The unemployment rate for that group is now approaching some of the lowest levels recorded since 2003, a sharp contrast with the experience of similarly aged workers who earned college degrees, the analysis found:

At the same time that workers without degrees are enjoying unusually strong prospects, college graduates are facing one of their tougher job markets. The strain appears even greater for people with advanced degrees or credentials in areas such as science and technology.

The split marks a notable shift from long-running patterns in the U.S. economy. Much of the change reflects basic supply and demand: employers need more skilled trades workers, while retirements among older workers and reduced immigration have tightened the available labor pool.

Meanwhile, more Americans have college degrees than ever, just as artificial intelligence is doing more of the entry-level work companies typically hire young graduates for.

The report comes days after an extremely strong jobs report on Friday, with the United States adding 162,000 jobs in August with unemployment holding at 4.1 percent, the same rate as in July. The report blew past economists’ forecast of just 55,000 jobs and an uptick in unemployment to 4.2 percent.

As – News Economics and Finance Editor John Carney reported:

The private sector added 127,000 jobs in August, far more than the 53,000 expected. The prior month’s gain of 30,000 was revised up to 71,000.

Manufacturing payrolls rose by 16,000, above the 5,000 estimated. The July estimate was revised up from a gain of 5,000 to a gain of 14,000. Durable goods added 15,000 jobs in August after adding 24,000 in July and 13,000 in June.

Construction added 22,000 following an 18,000 gain in July. Construction has been increasingly in demand thanks to a data center building spree.

Leisure and hospitality unexpectedly added 62,000 jobs after contracting in July and June. Retail services added a slight 1,400 and wholesale added 7,800. Transportation and warehousing added 5,000 and utilities 2,500.

The jobs numbers come after revisions to both the June and July numbers, which together accounted for an additional 55,000 jobs.

Kai said in the video: ‘I’m very, very lucky to have this, obviously as a freshman. I’m very lucky to have this apartment. It’s amazing.

‘I love it, it’s really nice coming home to no one, and after a long day on the golf course, it’s always nice to just chill here and do nothing.’

Her apartment tour comes just one week after she shared a vlog documenting her emotional final days at home and initial experience at school.

‘It’s all pre-cooked so she doesn’t have to do anything crazy,’ Emma said.

‘She’s living off of diet sodas, so I got her fruit and prosciutto and we got her some pasta and bread and stuff, like basic foods.’

Mexico Trial Opens in Killing of Australian Surfers, US Friend

0

Three men accused in the 2024 killings of two Australian brothers and their American friend went on trial Monday in Mexico’s Baja California state, according to court officials.

The defendants face charges of murder and aggravated robbery in connection with the deaths of the three victims, who disappeared while camping and surfing at a remote beach in Baja.

Jesús Gerardo García, also known as “El Kekas,” appeared in court in the coastal city of Ensenada alongside two other defendants identified as Irineo Francisco N. and Ángel Jesús N. They are charged in the deaths of Callum Ryan Robinson, 33, Jake Martin Robinson, 30, and Jack Carter Rhoad, 30.

The surnames of the latter two defendants were not released, in accordance with Mexican criminal procedure.

The victims’ bodies were discovered several days after they vanished, discarded in a shaft near a cliff top. Authorities said each had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

Martin Robinson, the father of the Australian brothers, attended the hearing with his wife.

“I know they would want us to be here; they would do the same for us,” he told reporters before entering the courthouse.

Prosecutors say the men were killed during an attempt to steal their pickup truck, which was later found burned near their bodies.

García former partner, Silva Raya, was sentenced to 20 years in prison last year after admitting she instigated the robbery to steal the pickup’s tires.

The trial is due to continue Tuesday.

Nigel Farage Urges Face Covering Ban After Masked Migrant Protests

0

Nigel Farage has urged the government to outlaw face coverings across Britain following migrant boat demonstrations in Dover and Portsmouth, where hundreds of protesters concealed their identities.

The Reform UK leader branded masks and balaclavas a “menace,” arguing they are used to threaten and intimidate members of the public, regardless of whether they are worn by far-right groups or hard-left activists.

Farage said it would once have been “unimaginable” to see an ordinary person feel compelled to cross the street simply to avoid someone whose face was hidden.

His comments followed major disruption at Britain’s busiest ferry port on Saturday morning, when a large group of men dressed in black and wearing balaclavas brought traffic around Dover to a halt.

The anti-migrant protesters blocked routes in and out of the south coast port while chanting slogans including “stop the boats” and “enough is enough.”

And overnight on Sunday, official vehicles were damaged and police officers were injured during a stand-off with masked protesters in the Eastney area of Portsmouth after the passengers on a migrant boat were brought ashore.

Hard-Right organisation Patriot Platform – run by convicted attempted kidnapper Daniel Thomas – claimed responsibility for the demonstrations.

Mr Farage told The Telegraph: ‘Now, I’m all for the protest – plenty to protest about – but seriously this is not the way to go about it.

‘Let’s be clear, face coverings are a menace. Whether it is a heavy-duty balaclava worn by a gang member or the dark mask of ‘Antifa’ extremists, their purpose is to bully and intimidate.’

He added: ‘Reform UK is calling for a ban on all full-face coverings in public spaces. No ifs, no buts. And yes, that includes religious ones too.

‘Because a free and open society depends fundamentally on trust. That trust is built on a simple, ancient social contract: I show you my face, you show me yours. When you strip that away, the entire fabric of public safety and mutual trust begins to fray.’

In a fiery interview on Saturday night, Farage dubbed the protest ‘disgusting’, insisting that ‘nobody in any political protest, left or right, should be appearing in balaclavas’.

Thomas, an associate of right-wing activist Tommy Robinson who uses the nickname Danny Tommo, confronted Reform UK’s Zia Yusuf in Portsmouth and said the party leader should be ‘careful with his words’.

Only a day after hard-Right protestors caused havoc in Dover, several hundred took to Portsmouth in a bid to stop 140 asylum seekers being transported to an immigration centre.

The migrants had earlier arrived on a huge dinghy which set sail from Calais, with the French coastguard shadowing the vessel until British lifeboats took over.

Protesters, some of whom had waded into the sea earlier in the day, said they were prepared to remain throughout the night to block any routes out of the city, leading to clashes with police as riot officers were deployed.

Eastney is just four miles from the Port of Portsmouth and the HM Naval Base, home to six Royal Navy destroyers and its two flagship aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales.

In protest footage shared on social media, a riot officer appeared to be pushed from his motorbike as demonstrators, many wearing caps and hoods, shouted: ‘Shame on you.’

Further clips showed officers carrying shields ordering the crowd to ‘get back’ before pushing some protesters away from a nearby police van.

The demonstrators remained in the area until almost midnight amid chaotic scenes and multiple clashes with officers near the waterfront.

The chairman of the Hampshire Police Federation said seven police officers ‘were assaulted’ during an anti-migrant demonstration in Portsmouth.

Spencer Wragg told LBC: ‘We’ve had several officers that were assaulted, obviously during that incident. The number is seven officers.

‘Thankfully, there’s no major injuries, but we’ve seen a plethora of different injuries caused in different ways. There’s been a lot of criminal damage as well as the assault on my colleagues.

‘What we saw was people breaking the law, assaulting officers, causing damage to property, and I’m sure for those residents in that area, that must be quite a frightening experience.’

Asked if any arrests were made, Mr Wragg said: ‘There were no arrests made on the night.

‘Obviously, as you would expect, and there’s an ongoing investigation, and I’ll anticipate there will be arrests in the coming days and weeks.’

Lioness Fans Shocked by Jill Wagner’s Iconic Wipeout Past

Jill Wagner may be winning over Lioness viewers as Bobby, the no-nonsense CIA operative, but many fans are only now realizing her television résumé includes a very different kind of high-adrenaline role.

Long before her turn in the action drama, the 47-year-old actress spent six seasons on ABC’s hit competition series Wipeout, co-hosting the show from 2008 to 2014.

Wagner became a familiar face to audiences as she interviewed contestants moments after they either conquered the course or emerged from one of the show’s famously chaotic wipeouts.

The format challenged participants to battle their way through a giant obstacle course packed with bouncing balls, rotating platforms, swinging hazards and slick ramps designed to send competitors tumbling.

Thanks to its over-the-top spills and slapstick spectacle, Wipeout built a loyal cult following, with viewers tuning in as much for the bruising falls as for the race to the finish.

Wagner acknowledged how stunned fans have been after learning who she is in a recent Instagram video captioned ‘Fooled ya.’

‘I’m getting sent this video from all my friends. There is this video out that says I was this many days old when I figured out that the host on Wipeout, that Jill, was Lioness Bobby Jill.’

‘What about if I told you that Lioness Bobby Jill and host Wipeout Jill was also Teen Wolf Kate Argent Jill, is also Christmas movie Jill? I know, it’s crazy,’ she said.

‘But here’s the thing. Guys, it is our job as an actor to fool you. To make you think we’re the characters that we’re playing. So, first of all thank you. That’s like the biggest compliment, is that you people don’t know who I am.’

‘I actually kind of prefer it like that,’ she added.

Fans on social media have been sharing their surprised reactions after discovering that she used to host Wipeout.

‘My mind is blownnnn!!!’ one Instagram user wrote. ‘No way I can’t believe this,’ another added.

‘Yoooooo what !???’

‘I knew she looked familiar but couldn’t remember from where,’ another wrote.

Wagner is also known for playing hunter Kate Argent on season one of Teen Wolf. She later transformed into a Werejaguar and resurfaced in seasons three, four and six.

In 2019, Wagner was cast as the lead in Hallmark’s Mystery 101 series of TV movies, playing Amy Winslow, an English Literature professor who helps a local detective solve strange crimes.

Wagner currently stars in Lioness and recently opened up about working with the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, revealing one of her most challenging moments under his direction.

The show, which stars Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldana, is in its third season, and while Wagner, who plays Bobby, says that nothing was ‘physically draining for me,’ she said the current season is ‘a bit more cerebral.’

Speaking to People with her co-star Laysla De Oliveira, who plays Cruz, the actress admitted that Sheridan forced her to redo one scene using her non-dominant hand with almost no notice.

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Sheridan for comment.

‘There was one day that Laysla and I were trying to get this entrance into the house,’ she explained. ‘Cruz and Bobby have to come in and clear the room, and we were having difficulties with some of the angles.

‘Ten minutes before we roll, he comes in and says, “No, I think you should switch arms. Transition your weapon to your left arm.”’ Wagner recalls. ‘And I was just like, “Hmm … OK. Help me.”’

The actress told the publication that although the task was tough, it turned out to be a success.

‘Ultimately, we worked it out, and it’s probably going to be one of my favorite moments,’ Wagner continued.

Lioness season three dropped on Paramount+ in August, and the finale hits the streaming platform on September 20.

US Forces Sink Ecuadorian Cartel Narco Hub in Pacific

0

U.S. forces sank a floating refueling vessel on Monday that officials said was being used by an Ecuadorian organized crime network.

The vessel, which supported “at-sea drug trafficking operations” in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, was interdicted by personnel from Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere (JTFWH), according to U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

“JTF-WHEM continues to conduct precise and professional operations to dismantle the logistical networks fueling narco-trafficking in the Western Hemisphere,” SOUTHCOM said in a post on X.

SOUTHCOM said the refueling vessel was linked to the Los Choneros narco-terrorist organization.

Those who were on board were taken off the vessel and are expected to be turned over to authorities in Ecuador.

Once the boat was cleared, US forces sank it.

JTFWH was activated by SOUTHCOM in August to counter threats, strengthen regional security, and respond to crises in the Western Hemisphere.

The Trump administration has prioritized targeting suspected drug-smuggling vessels bound for the United States.

Last week, the cartel was designated by the State Department as a foreign terrorist organization. Its members have attacked and threatened public officials and their families, security personnel, judges, prosecutors, and journalists in Ecuador, the agency said.

“Their ultimate goal is to control drug trafficking routes through Ecuador by terrorizing and inflicting brutal violence on the Ecuadorian people,” said State Department deputy spokesperson Thomas Pigott.

In July, US and Ecuadorian authorities cooperated to extradite Los Choneros leader Fito Macias, who was the first Ecuadorian citizen extradited from Ecuador to face justice in the US.

Texas Education Board Approves 9/11 Lessons on Radical Islam

0

The Texas Board of Education has granted final approval to revisions in the state’s high school social studies standards, a contentious decision expected to shape how students learn about Islam, Christianity and related historical events.

The updated curriculum, spanning U.S. history, government and world geography, was adopted after extensive public testimony. Dozens of speakers addressed the board, with most voicing opposition to the final language.

Among the approved changes is wording that identifies “radical Islam” as the motivation behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, rather than limiting the discussion to the specific terrorist organizations responsible.

The standards also direct students to examine early Islam through references to Prophet Muhammad’s “brutal military campaigns against Jewish and Christian tribes,” the “normalization of slavery” and the capture of women as “harem slaves.”

Several Democratic State Board of Education members pushed back against the wording, but the Republican-majority board still approved that section and the other changes on Friday.

Muslim groups and students, as well as multiple curriculum experts, also spoke out against the new changes.

“I feel attacked, as if my religion doesn’t belong,” Habiiba Quresh, a 15-year-old Muslim student, told the board, according to The Texas Tribune. “I shouldn’t have to defend my religion in the middle of history class because of one sentence someone on this board wrote.”

At least three of the board-appointed curriculum experts also warned against the new language.

Andrea Hutchison, a social studies curriculum coordinator for Prosper ISD, argued the material did not “hold up to close historical scrutiny,” according to the outlet. Robert Koons, a philosophy professor at UT-Austin, said most nonreligious scholars find the source of the claims “not very reliable,” adding that he would warn against including material that is “not based on well-established secular sources.”

The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said the board’s decision to “single out and denigrate Islam, minimize the brutal realities of slavery and segregation, and entirely erase Palestinian history is an affront to our system of education and the First Amendment.”

“No credible scholar of history validates the bigoted caricatures of Islam this curriculum teaches,” CAIR Texas and CAIR Action Texas said in a joint statement. “Even the board’s own appointed experts warned it doesn’t hold up to historical scrutiny, yet the board voted against removing it. Texas students of every background deserve an education that tells the truth about their history and their neighbors’ history, not propaganda that teaches them to see each other as threats or erases them from the story altogether.”

State Board of Education Chair Aaron Kinsey pushed back on criticism of the revised standards, saying opponents had “sensationalize[d] all these topics and [made] them seem more divisive than they actually are.” He added that board members “worked through, democratically, how to make those choices on behalf of our constituents” and said he believed they “did an exceptional job overall.

But Republican school board member Julie Pickren boasted about the material’s final approval, according to Fox 7.

“This social studies law that got us here, I’ve been working on for over 10 years with the House and the Senate, the Texas House and Texas Senate … and so this is such a huge accomplishment; this vote kind of bookends 12 years of life’s work,” Pickren said.

The approved curriculum is expected to be phased into classrooms during the 2030-31 school year.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Reportedly Surprised by King Charles’ Letter

0

Harry and Meghan were reportedly caught off guard by the King’s stark letter, which made plain that they would be regarded as “private citizens” rather than working members of the Royal Family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to believe they received no prior notice that Charles would issue the directive, confirming they will not carry out any royal duties in the UK.

The couple, who returned to Britain two weeks ago, are also understood to be uneasy about the timing of the announcement, amid suggestions it may coincide with a key meeting on their security arrangements.

Harry and Meghan are continuing to seek round-the-clock armed police protection while they are in the UK with their children, Archie and Lilibet, with reports indicating they have concerns about safety during the school run.

The Royal and VIP Executive Committee, known as Ravec, which is the Home Office body responsible for decisions on royal security, is reportedly expected to meet as early as today to consider arrangements for the Sussexes.

But last night the King ruled out any role for Harry and Meghan with the Royal Family on the eve of the crunch security meeting.

A spokesman for the Duke and Duchess said: ‘We were a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance.’

The couple’s spokesman apparently admitted the letter’s publication had taken them off guard. It is understood that while Harry and Meghan were told about the letter, they were not consulted on its contents.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla attend The Braemar Gathering in the Highlands on Saturday

King Charles III and Queen Camilla attend The Braemar Gathering in the Highlands on Saturday

A Buckingham Palace source told The Daily Telegraph that the release had nothing to do with the security issue or any meeting.

King Charles’s letter told more than 100 ‘senior stakeholders’ across the country that his son and daughter-in-law are not working royals with a reminder that their HRH titles remain on ice.

It comes after sources close to the couple repeatedly briefed select media about plans for their new life back in Britain.

They include a resumption of public engagements with the media invited to attend. Some of the couple’s friends have even boasted that Harry has finally secured the ‘half-in, half-out’ deal he always wanted – with the freedom to mine lucrative commercial opportunities while undertaking limited official duties by the ‘back door’.

That model was firmly rejected as unworkable by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, at the so-called ‘Sandringham Summit’ of January 2020, which led to the Sussexes’ acrimoniously quitting, not only royal life, but also Britain while embarking on a series of very public attacks on the institution.

Now the King has moved decisively to quash speculation over their return, and publicly re-enforce the boundaries laid down by his late mother.

And he makes clear that Harry and Meghan’s public appearances should not be treated as royal engagements and no public money should be spent on them.

Publication of the letter came as Prince Harry conducted his first official outing on Monday since arriving back in Britain – and will be seen by many as particularly timely. He was pictured smiling at the Tower Bridge Studios in London and signing a mural on a wall during a pseudo-royal engagement.

Later, Meghan’s As Ever Instagram page posted a photo of the Duchess petting a dog in the sunshine in what is thought to be the first picture of her put online since the Sussexes arrived back to the UK.

The letter released on Monday was written on His Majesty’s instruction by his Lord Chamberlain, Lord Benyon, head of the Royal Household, following ‘a number of requests for guidance’.

It states clearly that ‘there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used’.

It adds: ‘The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.’

Former press secretary to Queen Elizabeth, Ailsa Anderson-Cole, told the Daily Mail that the letter was ‘decisive and unequivocal’.

‘It was also cleverly done, making their position clear, but in response to queries by stakeholders [rather than by issuing their own statement].’ she said.

‘The King is taking charge of the narrative and acting decisively to end any speculation.’

The letter was sent to the duke and duchess’s team shortly before it was made public, without any discussion over its contents, the Mail understands.

Among the ‘senior stakeholders’ to receive it were the 98 Lord Lieutenants who are the monarch’s representatives in counties across the UK.

The Mail understands that Buckingham Palace had been contacted by a number of officials seeking clarity about operational matters pertaining to the Sussex family while they are resident in the UK. The letter was ‘shared’ with Harry’s team and then released publicly in the interests of ‘transparency’.

Officials stressed that there was nothing new in its contents, and that it simply reiterated Buckingham Palace’s position ‘in full accordance with the Sussex family’s stated wishes to remain private citizens while in the UK’.

It was, they added, ‘in keeping’ with the Sandringham agreement, which still very much stands. However, the fact that the Palace chose to send the letter out demonstrates the level of consternation and confusion sparked by the family’s sudden return.

The suggestion that the guidance has been issued to make clear the ‘continued position for the benefit of all parties’ will be interpreted by some as a warning shot across the Sussexes’ bow.

‘People have been asking for clarity. The guidance is both consistent and clear,’ a source told the Mail.

The letter is also at pains to stress, given Harry’s continued lobbying of the Home Office to reinstate his taxpayer-funded police protection now he has returned home, that this remains a matter for the department’s executive committee Ravec to determine, and not the King.

It is expected to make a ruling on the matter in the coming weeks. In the meantime, the palace says questions over security around a visit by Harry or Meghan should be referred to the local police authority.

Since their decision to quit the UK in 2020 and his loss in the High Court against the Home Office security decision, Harry had maintained it was unsafe for him to bring his family to the UK.

Just a year ago he publicly stated that he could not foresee a time this would ever happen.

But in July he brought Meghan and their children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, over for a short holiday during which they met King Charles at Highgrove for the first time in four years.

Then last month sources close to the prince revealed they had suddenly decided to return to the UK. The King was only told of the move four days before the news was made public and the family arrived just two weeks later. It is understood they have settled in the Cotswolds, with the children enrolled in a local private school.
