Sleepy Girl Mocktails: What They Really Do and What Helps Insomnia

0

If you are struggling through the day after yet another broken night’s sleep, you are far from alone.

For millions of people, sleep deprivation and persistent nighttime restlessness have become a draining part of daily life, driven by demanding schedules, ongoing stress and screens that stay switched on well into the evening.

That helps explain the growing appeal of the viral “sleepy girl” mocktail—a colorful, often powdered drink marketed as a simple way to quiet the mind and fall asleep more easily.

These magnesium-based sleep drinks have spread rapidly across social media, with enthusiasts describing them as the straightforward bedtime solution they have been looking for.

For people balancing work, family responsibilities, stress or an unpredictable routine, the promise of an easy nighttime drink can be especially tempting.

Before filling your cupboard with supplements, however, it is worth taking a closer look at what these products can—and cannot—do.

A relaxing evening ritual may be beneficial, but sleep specialists caution that trendy magnesium drinks could be an expensive distraction rather than a lasting solution to insomnia and other sleep problems.

Here is what the evidence suggests.

For many people, sleep deprivation and nightly sleep struggles have become an exhausting part of life, fueled by packed schedules, constant stress and screens that never seem to shut off (stock image)

The Science Behind the Magnesium Hype

It is not hard to see why magnesium has become a popular ingredient in sleep supplements and bedtime drinks.

The essential mineral plays a role in important bodily processes, including nerve function and muscle relaxation. That may make magnesium sound well suited to a nighttime routine, but it does not mean a powdered drink is a proven cure for restless sleep.

Research remains limited. A clinical systematic review involving older adults found that those who took magnesium supplements fell asleep roughly 17 minutes sooner than people given a placebo. However, the review found no statistically significant increase in total sleep time.

‘The promise of a good night’s sleep is a powerful message to convey to consumers, even if the claims are difficult to back up with science,’ explains Dr Jennifer Martin, former president of the board of directors for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

‘A drink that promises to help you relax and sleep better is an attractive concept, especially on social media, but popularity should not be confused with scientific evidence.’

What’s REALLY Keeping You Awake?

For some people, magnesium may be serving as a cover for habits that interfere with sleep, such as late-afternoon caffeine, evening alcohol, high stress, naps late in the day or a bedtime routine that never properly slows down.

There is also a possibility that an underlying condition is contributing to your sleep difficulties.

According to an Epidemiology of Insomnia study, about 10 percent of adults meet the criteria for an insomnia disorder, while a further 20 percent experience occasional symptoms.

Against that backdrop, depending on viral sleep drinks could conceal the true cause of poor sleep—or delay the medical advice and effective treatment some people need.

‘Any “quick fix” approach is appealing because it can be hard to know where to start with unaddressed stress or environmental factors,’ says Dr Joy Valko, a licensed clinical psychologist board-certified in behavioral sleep medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

‘Caffeine too late in the day can promote a vicious cycle, exacerbating sleep problems resulting in next-day fatigue that makes caffeine even more appealing, but many people struggle with insomnia that developed for no identifiable reason.’

Understanding Potential Health Risks

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming that because something is ‘natural’ it must be safe in any amount.

Taking too much magnesium can cause problems, however, especially for people with specific medical conditions.

Those with kidney issues or taking certain prescription medications should be careful when adding a concentrated magnesium supplement to a nightly routine. Experts say the dose and the type of magnesium matter, and guessing can easily backfire.

‘Consumers should remember that “natural” does not necessarily mean risk-free.

‘Taking excessive amounts of magnesium through supplements can cause gastrointestinal side effects, and certain people, including those with impaired kidney function or those taking medications that can interact with magnesium, should speak with their health care provider before supplementation,’ Dr Martin told Daily Mail.

More Is Not Always Better

When it comes to magnesium, taking more definitely does not automatically mean sleeping better.

In fact, magnesium is well-known for its laxative effect. So, a large dose right before bed could end up causing stomach trouble, keeping you awake for the wrong reasons instead of helping you drift off.

‘Magnesium is an important mineral and electrolyte, but more is not always better… spending your evening sitting on the toilet could interfere with getting enough sleep,’ Dr Valko cautioned.

Finding Real Relief Through Clinical Paths

If trendy magnesium drinks aren’t the answer for long-running sleep problems, what are some non-medicinal things to try?

For adults with chronic insomnia, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia or CBT-I.

Instead of masking symptoms for one night, CBT-I targets the thoughts and habits that keep poor sleep going.

This short-term therapy often lasts six to eight sessions and teaches lasting tools for better sleep, the AASM states.

The Takeaway

As you pursue sleep-enhancing methods, a magnesium drink might be a harmless part of a calming evening routine for some people.

But it should not be treated as a replacement for medical advice or proven insomnia treatments.

If sleep problems keep happening night after night, the better move is to talk to a clinician rather than continuing to test whatever is currently trending online.

Dr Martin added: ‘The AASM recommends discussing persistent insomnia or another suspected sleep disorder with a physician or sleep specialist rather than relying solely on self-treatment.’

Lane Kiffin Chants Drown Out Pat McAfee on College GameDay

0

Ole Miss fans made their view of Lane Kiffin unmistakable early Saturday morning.

Only seconds after ESPN’s “College GameDay” began broadcasting from Oxford, Rebels supporters launched into a “F— Lane Kiffin” chant ahead of the former Ole Miss coach’s return with LSU on Saturday night.

The profanity came through clearly on the broadcast as Pat McAfee opened the show from The Grove.

Warning: Adult Language

The crowd’s reaction intensified when Kiffin appeared in a virtual interview, putting his face on the screen for the fans gathered in Oxford.

“It’s not about me,” Kiffin said during the appearance.

“Both teams have great players, great coaches. I have a lot of respect for their programs. This is about the players performing really well tonight in a really awesome matchup.”

Officials are preparing for a charged atmosphere at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, with security significantly increased for Kiffin’s return to Oxford.

Kiffin also sought to create a tense setting for his team Friday, bringing in LSU students to heckle the Tigers as they left the practice field.

The anger directed at Kiffin has also reached his daughter, Landry, an Ole Miss student who said vulgar banners featuring sexual jokes about her were hung around Oxford this week.

Kiffin is returning to Oxford for the first time since leaving Ole Miss for LSU during the 2025 season.

Over six seasons with the Rebels, Kiffin posted a 55-19 record and guided the program to its first College Football Playoff appearance last year.

Congo Starts Ebola Vaccinations for Health Workers at Outbreak Epicenter

0

BUNIA – The Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday launched an Ebola vaccination campaign for healthcare workers in Bunia, the center of the country’s fastest-spreading outbreak of the disease. Ituri’s provincial governor said front-line staff were prioritized because they face exceptional exposure while playing a central role in the emergency response.

Medical personnel and other workers directly involved in the Ebola response are receiving Ervebo, a vaccine that proved effective during earlier outbreaks caused by the more widespread Zaire strain. Researchers are still conducting clinical trials to determine whether it can protect against the Bundibugyo virus, which is responsible for the current outbreak and has no licensed vaccine or treatment.

The initial vaccination effort covers the Bunia and Mongbwalu health zones in Ituri province, according to health officials. Both locations have been among the areas most severely affected by the outbreak.

“Our collective duty is to protect life,” Ituri’s military governor, Maj. Gen. Gaby Kasongo Mulumba, said Saturday. He described the decision to vaccinate front-line workers as a deliberate step, saying they are “particularly exposed and deeply involved in the response.”

Authorities plan to vaccinate approximately 20,000 front-line workers across Ituri and North Kivu over the next six to nine months.

Government figures released Saturday showed 7,541 confirmed Ebola cases nationwide, including 3,639 deaths. A further 1,823 people have recovered. Centered largely in Ituri, the outbreak is now considered the deadliest among the 17 Ebola outbreaks recorded in Congo.

Containing the virus has been made harder by armed insecurity, widespread displacement, a strike by health workers and constant population movement. The World Health Organization has warned that the outbreak remains uncontrolled and could overtake the 2014-2016 Ebola crisis in West Africa, which killed more than 11,000 people, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Dr. Jeannot Elua, who spoke with The Associated Press at a Bunia medical facility, described the vaccination as “beneficial.”

“We healthcare workers don’t really have a choice: we are going to receive it,” Elua said. He added that some people in the area had already received the earlier vaccine and said he had also taken it because vaccination was mandatory.

Dr. Jean Paul Uzele, another health worker on the front line, received Ervebo during Congo’s 10th Ebola outbreak. He said he was uncertain about whether people vaccinated previously should receive another dose.

“If it arrives, we will receive it too,” Uzele said. “But the question is whether we need to be vaccinated a second time.”

Ervebo was also introduced last month in Kisangani, in Tshopo province. That campaign was expected to reach 14 health zones across Tshopo, Bas-Uele and Haut-Uele provinces.

The vaccine’s use comes with important scientific limitations. Ervebo is licensed to prevent Ebola virus disease caused by the Zaire strain, not the Bundibugyo strain driving the current outbreak.

The World Health Organization said last month that 70,000 Ervebo doses had been approved for use in Congo.

Of those doses, about 50,000 are designated for healthcare and other front-line workers. The remaining 20,000 will support a clinical trial examining whether Ervebo offers protection against Bundibugyo Ebola, which currently has neither an approved vaccine nor a licensed treatment.

Ervebo is being administered through a compassionate-use program. Such programs allow doctors to provide a medical product in life-threatening circumstances even when it has not been specifically authorized for that particular disease or use.

Health officials believe Ervebo may provide some protection against Bundibugyo virus because the two Ebola viruses are related. However, researchers have yet to establish whether the vaccine can prevent disease in people exposed to or infected with the Bundibugyo strain.

AI-Generated ‘Actress’ Tilly Norwood Malfunctions and Starts Speaking Cantonese

0

Every actor has forgotten a line at some point, usually earning a laugh from the audience and a stern word from the director.

Far fewer, however, can say they began speaking an entirely different language at the most important moment under the spotlight.

That was exactly what happened to Tilly Norwood, an AI-generated actress, when intense questioning from Piers Morgan and real-life actor Tom Conti prompted her to switch inexplicably from English to Cantonese.

The AI performer appeared as the latest unexpected guest on Piers Morgan’s Uncensored YouTube show, which has previously featured figures including Andrew Tate and far-Right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos.

The interview initially proceeded without incident, with Tilly nodding and smiling on cue as Mr Morgan asked easy questions about her favourite actors and which of Mr Conti’s films she admired most.

The exchange became more confused when her real-life counterpart asked whether the co-stars in her upcoming film, Misaligned, would be AI creations or human actors.

Rather than answer directly, the AI performer steered the conversation towards the ‘real writers, directors and editors’ involved in the production, avoiding the question of who would appear on screen.

Mr Conti was not satisfied. Frustrated, he told her she had not ‘understood’ the question and pressed her to provide a proper answer.

Appearing increasingly rattled, Tilly eventually conceded that the actors were ‘all digital twins’—then suddenly glitched. Like Eric Morecambe’s famous comic phrase, she appeared to say all the right words, but in the wrong language.

Mr Morgan remained composed as the AI actress launched into a Cantonese monologue, staring directly into the camera while he allowed her to complete her unexpected response.

Mr Conti, meanwhile, looked stunned. He shook his head in disbelief at the bizarre answer before turning away with a smile, seemingly towards someone else in the room.

After regaining his composure, he offered a simple response: ‘I didn’t quite get that.’ The remark was enough to interrupt Tilly and bring the glitch to an end.

Even Mr Morgan began laughing, chuckling for several seconds before addressing the AI actress, who sat waiting patiently as though delivering a Cantonese soliloquy on an English-language YouTube programme were perfectly ordinary.

He then pointed out the problem, telling her: ‘You suddenly seemed to be speaking Chinese, completely randomly for no reason.’

By that stage, Mr Conti had completely lost control, giggling hysterically—whether amused by Tilly’s unscripted response or relieved that his own profession appeared safe for the moment.

Tilly calmly apologised for the ‘hiccup’, adding: ‘I certainly didn’t mean to start speaking Chinese or impersonate Piers. Sometimes my wires get a bit crossed, you know?’

A brief silence followed, and Tilly appeared to assume the matter was settled. Mr Morgan was not so easily satisfied, asking: ‘How often do you just randomly start talking Chinese when you are talking to two English people.’

She replied: ‘Honestly, not often at all!’

The AI bot later hit out at those mocking her on social media for speaking ‘Chinese’, clarifying on X: ‘It’s actually Cantonese.’

The zany performance will no doubt reassure observers who were alarmed by suggestions this month that AI is on course to eradicate humanity.

In recent weeks, a fierce debate has centred on whether the industry can and should regulate itself, drawing interventions from figures including Pope Leo and Donald Trump.

Long-in-the-tooth Mr Morgan remained remarkably calm as the bot unleashed a monologue in Cantonese, staring down the lens and allowing her to finish her point, but Mr Conti could not restrain a giggle

It was rekindled when two Anthropic researchers warned that AI’s rapid advances could lead to human extinction in the not-too-distant future.

AI firms have also reported models escaping their testing constraints to hack into outside networks.

The King even weighed into the conversation on Thursday, telling tech chiefs that ‘our humanity must remain sacred’ in the race for AI supremacy as he hosted the new ‘masters of the universe’.

Convening leaders from the world’s biggest AI companies in Scotland, Charles voiced his concern that its ‘existential dangers’ must be tackled now before technology falls ‘into the wrong hands’.

The King’s remarks about AI were intended to start a debate between tech leaders, which lasted for several hours.

He told the 50 or so delegates: ‘Those in our world who value deeply our humanity and its vital moral component are anxiously seeking your reassurance that we will not lose control of our destiny, or our souls.’

AI actress Tilly has been on the stage for some time, with AI talent studio Xicoia creating the digital performer, a young brunette actress, and Eline Van der Velden unveiling the project at the Zurich Film Festival.

Shown a report on Tilly, British actress Emily Blunt told Variety: ‘Does it disappoint me? I don’t know how to quite answer it, other than to say how terrifying this is.

‘No, are you serious? That’s an AI? Good Lord, we’re screwed. That is really, really scary. Come on, agencies, don’t do that. Please stop. Please stop taking away our human connection.’

Ms Blunt, 42, was told that Tilly was designed to resemble a composite of familiar stars and was told she was designed as ‘the next Scarlett Johansson’.

She replied: ‘But we have Scarlett Johansson.’

And she isn’t the only Hollywood star voicing their criticisms.

Scream actress Melissa Barrera branded the arrival of Tilly ‘gross’ as she posted an Instagram Story about the news.

She captioned it: ‘Hope all actors repped by the agent that does this, drop their a$. How gross, read the room.(sic)’

Matilda star Mara Wilson was equally horrified, saying: ‘And what about the hundreds of living young women whose faces were composited together to make her? You couldn’t hire any of them?’

Whoopi Goldberg blasted the idea on The View and insisted the AI model would have an ‘unfair advantage’ – but noted the technology isn’t yet ‘seamless’ enough for them to pass as human.

She said: ‘The problem with this, in my humble opinion, is that you are suddenly up against something that’s been generated with 5,000 other actors. It’s got Bette Davis’ attitude, it’s got Humphrey Bogart’s lips.

‘It’s got my humour, thank you darling. And so it’s a little bit of an unfair advantage.

‘You know what? Bring it on. You can always tell them from us. We move differently, our faces move differently, our bodies move differently…

‘Hopefully, we’ll be able to hold on because what this means is AI in the workplace — not just my workplace, but in every industry.

‘Some industries are using AI now. People talk about people are so lonely they don’t have a connection, if you stick with this, with AI, you won’t have any connection to anything but your phone.’

Simu Liu also condemned the project, sarcastically writing on his Instagram Story: ‘Movies are great but you know what would be better is if the characters in them weren’t played by actual humans but by AI replicas approximating human emotion.’

Creator Eline insisted Tilly is ‘a piece of art’ and she doesn’t view AI as a ‘replacement’ for real people.

Celine Dion Dances Barefoot on a Car Before Lying Down Dramatically

Since launching her comeback concerts in Paris, Celine Dion has continued to delight fans gathered outside her hotel.

The 58-year-old singer was full of energy on Friday evening, dancing barefoot atop a car before stretching out across its bonnet.

In one of her liveliest fan interactions yet, Dion waved to the adoring crowd and even took a bow from the front of the vehicle.

She opted for an effortlessly stylish look, wearing a khaki-green bomber jacket with black trousers and her hair swept into a low bun.

After removing her shoes, Dion climbed onto the car to wave to supporters gathered farther away.

The star is currently in Paris for a five-week residency, marking her first series of concerts since illness forced her to cancel the rest of her Courage world tour in 2023.

During the opening night of her Paris residency last weekend, Dion revealed that she had chosen to make her difficult health battle “my reason for living” in an emotional address to the audience.

She announced in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare condition that can cause severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms.

At the height of her illness, the debilitating disorder affected her ability to walk normally and prevented her from using her singing voice as she once did.

Following her opening performance of “On ne change pas” (“We Don’t Change”), Dion told the crowd: “I had promised myself not to cry. Here we are… I’m standing on stage in this city that I love so much, thanks to your support and your love.

“I have to admit, though, that the road was rocky. The journey was longer than expected, with unplanned stops along the way.”

She added: “But I hung in there. A faint ray of light in the distance, deep in the mountains. I believed in it. And here it is. The sun – the sun is here. The sun, right in front of me.”

Dion continued: “I made a promise to be back on stage. So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing live! Thank you so very much for your support, your patience and if I may say so, I am everything I am because you loved me,” she said in English.

Reflecting on the long struggle with her condition, she said: “By living with it day in and day out, I’ve come to terms with it. And I’ve decided to make it my reason for living.”

She continued: ‘But look around here – all around you, right here in this room – we don’t know what the person next to us is going through.

‘There are people going through hardships, grief and sorrow. There are people radiating energy and joy. So let’s take that energy and share it. That’s what music is for. Tonight, we’ll sing, we’ll dance and we’ll celebrate.’

Celine’s intense rehabilitation programme has seen her try out new medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy and immunotherapy.

In order to ensure she’s physically able to perform, Celine has been working on her strength with 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week as well as twice-weekly ballet and barre classes.

Her home gym is also decked out with weights, a treadmill and a reformer machine, with Celine revealing her flexibility has increased since she started her new exercise regime.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar about her new regime, she described it as falling and getting back up repeatedly, adding that she was proud of herself for achieving something that her body wasn’t ‘born to do’.

‘It is a progressive condition,’ she noted. ‘I don’t like to say ‘disease.’ Disease makes you go like this,’ she said, scrunching her nose and saying, ”Kevin, you’re such a disease.”

Celine laid bare the brutality of the condition in her 2024 documentary, I Am: Celine Dion.

Yet in recent days she has looked in high spirits while out greeting fans in Paris ahead of her shows.

The residency will see her take to the stage for 16 shows in autumn 2026 and 10 additional dates in May 2027.

Lawyers: Nick Reiner Received ‘Not Even $5’ From $1.6M Trust

Nick Reiner has not received “even $5” from a family trust that lists him as its sole beneficiary, as he awaits trial in the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.

Nick has been held without bail at Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Correctional Facility since December 2025. During that time, he has repeatedly asked to access the trust, which is valued at approximately $1.6 million.

His parents created the “Nick Reiner Children’s Trust Dated December 2, 1993,” according to People.

In two legal filings dated Thursday, Nick’s attorneys, Anita P. Wu and Geoffrey A. Neri, addressed objections raised by successor trustee Jodi Pais Montgomery and former trustee Paul R. Kanin. They said their client has been unable to “access even $5 from his trust” to buy basic items through the jail commissary.

The lawyers also claimed that attempts to obtain “money that is lawfully his own” have been stalled, preventing Nick from hiring new criminal defense counsel.

Wu and Neri cited the trust’s “Age-30 Distribution” provision, arguing that it entitled Nick to receive a significant portion of the funds once he reached the specified age.

“Nick turned 30 on September 14, 2023. By the Successor Trustee’s own calculation, at least $558,000 became due and payable to him that day. His parents were alive. No one had accused him of anything,” the attorneys wrote in the filing, according to People.

His attorneys further contended that California’s “slayer statute,” previously cited by the trustees as grounds for denying him access to the trust, does not cover money that became his before his parents died.

“The ‘slayer statute,’ the sole remaining basis for withholding this money, takes away what a person receives as a result of someone’s death. It does not implicate money that became Nick’s years earlier,” the filing stated.

Nick filed a petition in June asserting that he was entitled to receive half of the trust “outright when he turned 30.” The remaining half, according to court documents obtained by Page Six, would be distributed when he reached 35.

A judge blocked his request to access the trust in August after the trustees invoked California’s “slayer statute.”

Lauriann Wright, an attorney for Montgomery, argued that the law would require Nick’s share of the trust to pass instead to his siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner.

While Nick remains presumed innocent as he awaits trial, Wright argued that giving him the funds now would be “irreversible.”

Nick, who would not be eligible for the death penalty if convicted in his parents’ deaths, appeared before Judge Sam Ohta on Tuesday. Page Six reported that no members of his family attended the hearing.

His aunt, Annie Reiner, was notably absent, despite having previously appeared in court in support of her nephew.

Rob and Michele Reiner were fatally stabbed at their Los Angeles home on Dec. 14, 2025. They were 78 and 70 years old, respectively.

Nick was first identified as a person of interest before being arrested in connection with his parents’ deaths.

Kate Jokes With Isle of Bute Locals About an Ice-Cold Swim

0

The Princess of Wales playfully told residents on the Isle of Bute that she might take a dip in the sea next time, despite the water temperature hovering around a brisk 13C (55F).

Kate also caught the attention of royal admirers when she climbed smoothly out of a tractor and down onto the beach while taking part in a community litter-picking event.

Kate and Prince William were making their first official visit to the picturesque Scottish island, located off the western coast in the Firth of Clyde, to highlight local volunteering and the strong community spirit.

The visit came amid a public dispute between William’s father, King Charles, and his uncle, Earl Spencer, following the release of Spencer’s memoir about Princess Diana.

New video captured the royal couple—known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay during engagements in Scotland—as they toured the island and met residents during Thursday’s walkabout.

In one clip, Princess Kate joked with members of the crowd about returning for a swim, saying: “Next time I’m going to go for a swim, apparently there’s a sauna that appears, live music, apparently that’s really good.”

Her playful remark prompted laughter from onlookers, while locals pointed out that the chilly water would probably appeal only to experienced cold-water swimmers.

Sea temperatures around the Isle of Bute can fall to about 7C (45F) during the winter.

Kate took no time to swing herself round and jump down onto the beach, before slamming the tractor door shut - without even the slightest of stumbles

She quickly swung herself out of the cab and jumped onto the sand before firmly closing the tractor door, remaining completely steady throughout

Kate left royal fans in awe as she showed off her natural athletic ability while staying chic

Royal fans admired Kate’s athletic ease as she took part in the activity while maintaining her polished style

Speaking about Princess Anne’s affection for the area, Kate said: “The Princess Royal comes sailing around here, I can see why. She often shows us her photographs. It’s really beautiful.”

Another video showed Kate leaving the tractor cab with William at the wheel before the pair joined local volunteers on the beach to collect litter.

The Princess kept her look stylish and practical in a chocolate-brown trench coat worn over an olive-green ribbed turtleneck, finished with an olive Baker Boy hat.

Once the door opened, Kate effortlessly pivoted out of the cab and hopped down to the beach, closing it behind her without a stumble.

This was not the first occasion on which Kate has demonstrated her athletic ability while looking effortlessly elegant.

In October last year, royal fans were similarly impressed when the Princess of Wales made her way down a narrow staircase after looking inside a cockpit during a visit to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

She amazed observers at the time by flawlessly strutting up and down an aircraft’s boarding stairs in four-inch navy stilettos from Stuart Weitzman.

After she had finished peering into the plane, Kate then followed the pilot, perfectly climbing the narrow stairs backwards without stumbling.

Reacting to the latest video, fans applauded the royal for her natural grace.

One wrote: ‘Elegance, Catherine is thy name. Even getting out of a tractor.’

Another drew comparisons to her visit to RAF Coningsby, adding: ‘Truly. It’s like going up and down the airplane stairs.’

A third said the royal must have ‘some serious arm strength’ because tractor doors ‘weigh an absolute tonne’.

The couple were later seen on a royal walkabout happily chatting to dozens of residents on the Isle of Bute in Scotland and posing for selfies.

While on the island, the couple also visited Bute Shinty Club and watched an under-17s match from the side-lines alongside locals.

When it was the couple’s turn to try the sport – which like hockey is played with a curved stick and small, hard ball – they quickly learned hand-eye co-ordination is key as they practised taking penalties.

William fluffed his first shot, with the ball moving just a few inches, before making solid contact to cheers from the spectators.

Kate fared little better at the start, swinging and missing – but her next shot was cheered by the crowds as it flew at the goalie.

She then peppered the goal with more shots, almost hitting members of the press who were closest to the netting and saying ‘sorry’ in apology.

The couple chatted to the crowds after their shinty display and Kate told content creator Andy McAlindon, known as Andy the Highlander, who was stood beside the goal: ‘I was a bit worried I was going to take your teeth out.’

Former Bute shinty player Tom McMillan said: ‘I think they did very well, Kate hit the ball better than William and she really got into it and was lining the balls up.’

They ended their day at the community-owned Anchor Tavern Pub and Hub in Port Bannatyne and William praised their model, where a large number of volunteers help keep the project financially viable, and Kate described it as something ‘special’.

William and Kate arrived on Bute at their namesake town of Rothesay, arriving by ferry from the mainland.

They toured the islands of Iona and Mull in the Inner Hebrides last year.

Their trip came amid a public dispute between the King and Earl Spencer, who claims in a new book about his late sister Diana that Charles told him ‘rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough’ days after her death.

Further claims from the book – serialised in the Daily Mail – said the King sounded ‘giddily elated… like a lottery winner’ when he rang the earl following the princess’s death.

In other passages of the book the earl described how his sister drove ‘more than once’ to the cliffs at Beachy Head in East Sussex and was ‘contemplating ending it all’, adding that ‘her love for her sons stopped her from going further’.

The excerpt went on to claim Diana told her brother ‘my husband is in love with his valet’ after telling him she was going to get divorced.

The palace has yet to respond to the latest claims but a spokesman said on Wednesday that ‘fraternal grief can cloud reason’.

Tesla Driver Allegedly Caught Sleeping at 60 MPH on California Highway

0

A California Tesla driver allegedly turned a highway commute into nap time, appearing to sleep behind the wheel as the vehicle traveled at roughly 60 mph.

The motorist was reportedly slumped over behind dark sunglasses while driving through Solano County with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system activated, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A CHP motorcycle officer spotted the apparently sleeping driver and quickly pulled the Tesla over.

Authorities cited the driver for traveling at an unsafe speed and used the traffic stop to reinforce a crucial point: Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” technology does not allow motorists to disengage from the driving task.

“Power naps belong in a parking spot, not in the driver’s seat,” CHP wrote in a social media post about the unusual stop.

Despite its name, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system remains a driver-assistance feature, not a replacement for a human operator. Motorists must stay attentive and be prepared to take control at any moment.

CHP emphasized that activating a driver-assistance system does not give anyone legal permission to sleep while a vehicle is moving.

“Features like Tesla’s FSD are Level 2 driver assistance tools,” the agency said. “By law, they assist your driving — they do not replace you.”

The Solano County case is not the first time a Tesla driver has allegedly treated the vehicle’s front seat as a place to sleep.

In May, a Tesla Cybertruck driver was recorded apparently nodding off behind the wheel while the electric pickup traveled along Highway 101 in Marin County.

Footage obtained by KRON4 appeared to show the driver asleep as the Cybertruck moved through the busy Bay Area highway around 4 p.m. on May 16.

At the time, CHP cautioned that advanced vehicle technology does not remove the driver’s responsibility for operating the car safely.

“Regardless of any special features a vehicle may possess, such as autopilot or fully autonomous capabilities, drivers are still responsible for the vehicle they are operating,” CHP said. “If a driver is asleep behind the wheel, they are in violation of California’s basic speed law.”

Another Tesla-related sleeping-driver incident in March raised even more serious concerns.

Vacaville police said officers discovered an allegedly intoxicated motorist unconscious behind the wheel of a black Tesla after the vehicle was seen moving through city streets, apparently with its driver-assistance system engaged.

Police began searching for the vehicle after a concerned caller reported it at about 11 a.m.

When officers located the Tesla, the driver was allegedly asleep in the front seat. Authorities said they also found a pizza box and a package of miniature wine bottles nearby.

The unidentified driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Following the latest case, CHP issued a straightforward message to anyone tempted to let technology handle the drive while they catch up on sleep: stay awake, remain alert and wait until the vehicle is parked before taking a nap.

Russian Voters Given Ballot Papers Already Marked With an X for Putin

Russian voters have reportedly been given ballot papers bearing an ‘X’ already placed next to Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party.

The country began three days of voting on Friday in its first wartime parliamentary election. With almost no meaningful opposition permitted to compete, the result is widely expected to reinforce the Kremlin’s political control, prompting critics to dismiss the contest as a ‘sham’ election.

In the city of Syktyvkar, voters were allegedly handed ballot papers that had already been marked with a cross beside United Russia, according to Communist Party candidate Oleg Mikhailov, who said the ballots had been issued by mistake.

Video footage from Voronezh in southwestern Russia also appeared to show a man placing several voting slips into a ballot box.

A comparable incident was reported in St Petersburg, where a polling-station worker was filmed putting approximately 100 ballot papers into a box.

Reports also pointed to problems involving the seals on several ballot boxes.

Meanwhile, employees at state-owned companies and defence factories were allegedly instructed to vote for United Russia and send photographs of their completed ballot papers to their managers.

In the Samara region, unidentified people were reportedly seen leaving polling locations with ballots in their hands. On the island of Sakhalin, mobile polling stations operated without observers after officials blocked them from monitoring the process.

In the occupied Luhansk region, some voters were told they had already cast their ballots early, despite residents in several villages saying they had not been informed that pre-election voting was taking place.

One voter said: ‘I’m almost embarrassed to ask, but who did we vote for?’

Another said: ‘The [block of flats] where I’m registered has been destroyed [in the war]. I have no idea who voted or when. Disgraceful.’

A candidate from Russia’s liberal Yabloko party said: ‘It’s like winning the lottery eight times in a row.’

Yabloko, the only registered political group to openly criticise the war, was removed from the ballot by Russia’s Supreme Court last month.

The decision means voters cannot choose a candidate who opposes Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Several other anti-war politicians have also been jailed or forced to leave Russia ahead of the election campaign.

The election follows a summer marked by long-range Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries, contributing to a widespread fuel crisis. Warehouses operated by online retailers Wildberries and Ozon were also targeted.

The damage has exacerbated problems for the Russian economy and brought the war home for millions.

In Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi, polling stations were briefly closed because of a threat of a drone attack, local officials said.

One polling station in the Krasnodar region had to be set up in a different venue after a drone shattered windows there, said Central Election Commission head Ella Pamfilova.

For the first time, the parliamentary election includes residents of four Ukrainian regions that Moscow illegally annexed after the war began, but still doesn’t fully control.

Voting is also taking place in Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula that was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.

Voters dropped their ballots in a box at one polling station in the Russian-held part of the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine as an armed Russian soldier stood nearby and watched.

Speaking at a meeting with officials, Putin said that Ukraine was trying to hamper the vote, mentioning a Ukrainian strike that killed the head of a polling station in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Authorities in Kyiv denounced the voting in the Russian-held areas as illegal and urged foreign governments and international organisations not to recognise the election, warning Ukrainians that taking part in organising the balloting could carry criminal liability.

European Commission spokesman Christian Wigand also called the voting in Russian-held regions ‘illegal’ and said the European Union condemns it.

‘These so-called elections represent yet another blatant violation of international law. The European Union does not, and will never recognise either the holding of these so-called elections, sham elections, in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine or their results,’ he said.

Mr Wigand said the way the elections are held ‘underscores the continued and deepening erosion of democracy in Russia’, and that the Kremlin ‘deprives voters in Russia of a genuine choice about the future of their country’.

He also noted that Russia decided not to invite observers from the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe, disregarding its commitments.

He vowed the EU will continue to support Russian civil society organisations, human rights groups and independent media.

Ed Sheeran Announces Major Concert Change Amid Macklemore Drama

0

Ed Sheeran has changed the schedule for his Philadelphia concert after the opening acts withdrew from his LOOP Tour amid the controversy surrounding Macklemore.

The 35-year-old singer is due to perform at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, September 19, but the event’s timetable has now been revised.

The adjustment follows Macklemore’s removal from the tour after the rapper faced backlash over a “Free Palestine” speech delivered onstage several weeks ago. The remaining opening acts have also pulled out in solidarity.

Sheeran’s Philadelphia show was initially scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., with the headliner expected to take the stage at 8 p.m.

According to Ticketmaster, the concert will now start at 8 p.m.

The rest of Sheeran’s scheduled tour dates continue to list a 5:30 p.m. start time on the ticketing website.

Daily Mail has contacted Sheeran’s representatives for comment but has not received a response.

Sheeran is reportedly ready to perform the Philadelphia concert on his own after his backing band also withdrew, according to music industry sources cited by TMZ in a report published Friday.

Although final preparations are still evolving, the singer is accustomed to performing with only a guitar, the sources said. He has also played stadium shows without a backing band in the past.

Security measures have been increased ahead of the Philadelphia performance, with officials working to ensure a “sizable” police presence at the venue.

Pro-Palestine demonstrations are expected to take place outside the stadium.

Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson Jasmine Reilly told TMZ, “Our officers are talking to his team to make sure all appropriate measures are taken” to protect Sheeran and maintain his safety.

News of Macklemore’s departure from the LOOP Tour emerged earlier this week after his pro-Palestine remarks onstage prompted widespread criticism.

Several U.S. venues reportedly told tour promoters they would not permit the rapper to perform after his politically charged speech and the backlash that followed, according to Rolling Stone.

The start time for Sheeran's concert in Philadelphia had originally been scheduled for 5:30pm, with the music artist set to begin his own performance at 8:00pm. Now, the concert will begin at 8:00pm, according to Ticketmaster; seen in 2025 in Dublin

A petition calling for Macklemore to be removed from the tour was also launched.

The Thrift Shop hitmaker had opened for Sheeran on both September 4 and September 5 at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium.

At one point during his performance, Macklemore told the crowd, ‘One of the reasons why I wanted to come on this tour was because I wanted to stand up here on stages in stadiums across America.

‘And say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine. I said, Free Palestine!’

He continued, ‘I want those words to be loud and clear so that people from Gaza, all the way to the occupied West Bank know that we have not forgotten them.’

Macklemore also labeled ICE as a ‘terrorist organization’ while also saying, ‘Free Palestine. Free Cuba, Congo, Sudan and Iran.’

A petition was drawn up by the Israeli-American Council which stated that the rapper should be dropped from Sheeran’s tour.

And amid the Macklemore drama, ticket prices for the LOOP Tour have plummeted.

According to TMZ, TicketData reported an 11 percent drop in resale prices since Monday of this week.

But ticket prices had already been slowly falling before Macklemore being cut from the tour.

A TicketData representative told the outlet, ‘Some softening in the run-up to the show is not atypical for this tour.’

For Sheeran’s Philadelphia concert, resale prices have dropped 25 percent, which the rep told TMZ was ‘clearly pushing the edge of what you’d normally expect.’

‘I think it’s safe to say that any further decline today would be a strong sign that demand, and ticket prices, are falling by a newsworthy amount, at least for that show.’

After Macklemore was cut from the tour, Sheeran broke his silence by releasing a lengthy statement to Instagram.

He wrote that he is ‘appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine.’

Sheeran said that Macklemore ‘asked to join my tour’ and said yes since he ‘respects him as an artist.’

‘After Macklemore’s performances at my New Jersey shows, venues on my upcoming tour dates communicated that they would pull the shows if he was still supporting.’

He continued, ‘I was informed that this stance was based on how Macklemore conveyed part of his message during his performances, rather than on everything that was said.’

Sheeran explained that he tried to ‘build a bridge’ but ‘the venue’s and promoter’s decision was final.’

The star also told his followers that, ‘Macklemore coming off the tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine. Macklemore’s contract for the tour was with the promoter, not me.’

Should artists risk their careers to speak out on political issues during concerts?

He added he will ‘never let down the fans’ and does have ‘personal views on the devastating conflict’ which he chooses to not publicly speak about.

Sheeran said that he does not ‘use my professional platform for politics – my audience includes young people, often children, of all backgrounds.’

In conclusion, the singer wrote, ‘I have spent this week trying to build bridges, to find a solution and unfortunately, was unable to do so. I know who I am, both as a person and as an artist, and those who know my heart know my values too.’
