Police Identify Suspect in CEO’s Mansion Invasion Case

0

Police have identified one of three suspects wanted over a “terrifying” home invasion at the residence of a Canadian CEO, saying the man was accidentally shot by one of his accomplices.

Daijohn Richards, 23, of Toronto, is wanted in connection with Thursday’s violent break-in at the $2.1 million home of David Morton in the affluent Bridle Path neighborhood, police said.

Morton, the CEO of MAC Group, was at home with his wife and their two daughters when three masked men reportedly forced their way inside shortly after 3.30am. The suspects were armed with handguns and a hammer.

Morton and his two daughters were shot during the ordeal, while his wife, Doriana Zohil-Morton, was “smashed in the head” with the hammer, according to the Toronto Sun.

All four family members survived, although two suffered what were described as “life-altering injuries.”

On Saturday, the Toronto Police Service identified Richards as one of the three suspects sought in the attack. All three remain at large.

“We know who you are, and we’re actively looking for you. Your world just got smaller,” Inspector Kristy Smith said at a press conference.

Investigators believe Richards was shot in the right shoulder by one of the other suspects as the group terrorized the family and demanded valuables, Smith said.

Richards reportedly went to St Joseph’s Health Centre for treatment soon afterward. Hospital staff notified police in accordance with Ontario’s mandatory reporting rules for gunshot wounds.

He was discharged “late Thursday morning,” before police recognized his possible connection to the home invasion later that evening, authorities told CP24 News.

“We conducted a number of interactions with this male prior to him being released from the hospital,” Smith said.

Asked why officers had not arrested Richards while he was receiving treatment, Smith said police had not yet established sufficient grounds connecting him to the crime.

“We don’t just go off of suspicion,” Smith said. She explained that investigators later established the link through forensic work with the Centre for Forensic Science and door-to-door inquiries in the neighborhood.

Addressing Richards directly, she said: “I strongly urge you to get a lawyer, contact a lawyer, and turn yourself in.”

Police confirmed that a Canada-wide warrant had been issued for Richards and urged anyone who knows where he is to contact investigators immediately.

“Investigators believe Daijohn Richards was accidentally shot by one of the other suspects during the struggle inside the victims’ home,” authorities said. “He may show apparent signs of a shoulder injury.”

The suspects confronted Morton, 75, his 64-year-old wife and their two adult daughters, Maggie and Cristina Zohil-Morton, both in their 20s (both pictured)

Police also released a photo of Richards, who is wanted on a slew of charges, including four counts of discharging a firearm with intent to wound, four counts of robbery with a firearm and three counts of aggravated assault.

He is also charged with break and enter into a dwelling-house, possessing a prohibited device and disguise with intent.

The manhunt also continues for the two remaining unidentified suspects, with Smith warning the public not to approach them if they are spotted.

The latest developments come just two days after three suspects stormed a multimillion-dollar home on Hyde Park Circle, near Bayview and Lawrence Avenues, at around 3.45am.

They forced their way inside through a rear door, with two carrying guns and the third armed with a hammer, before confronting Morton, 75, his 64-year-old wife and their two adult daughters, Maggie and Cristina Zohil-Morton, both in their 20s.

‘There was a violent interaction. There was a demand made for valuables from within the home – whether or not they escaped with anything is uncertain,’ Smith said, according to The Toronto Sun.

‘An affluent area where people would have things that are sought after would be the motivation for this,’ she added.

Sources told CP24 that the masked intruders made their way to the second floor and entered the victims’ bedrooms, where they fired multiple shots and attacked the 64-year-old woman with a hammer.

Smith also revealed Saturday that, ‘through the grace of God,’ some of the victims had since been released from hospital, although it remains unclear which family members have been discharged.

She described the attack as involving ‘an appalling level of violence, all for the purpose of acquiring property,’ adding: ‘This was a family asleep in their own home,’ CP24 reported.

Morton told the Daily Mail in an emailed statement Friday afternoon that his family went through a ‘terrifying and life-threatening experience’ while they should have been in the ‘safety and security of [their] own home.’

‘It is difficult to put into words the trauma of experiencing something so horrific in the one place where everyone should feel safest: their own home,’ he added.

‘No family should ever have to experience this. People should be able to sleep peacefully in their homes without fear of armed individuals breaking in and threatening their lives.’

The CEO of the Toronto-based real estate services company said his family was ‘deeply concerned about the increasing violence associated with home invasions’ and the safety of families across the city.

Thursday’s attack marked the 119th home invasion reported to Toronto police so far this year, a 32.2 per cent increase over the same period in 2025.

Detectives have yet to establish whether the family was specifically targeted or what motivated the suspects, according to the National Post. Security camera footage from inside the home has since been handed over to police.

Smith said residents should expect to see an increased police presence in the area as the investigation continues.

‘This is a very active and ongoing investigation,’ said Smith, adding: ‘I can assure you that we are doing our best to provide information on the three suspects.’

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact the Hold Up Squad on 416-808-7350 or 33 Division on 416-808-3300.

The MAC Group describes itself as a family-owned business operating across real estate, executive corporate housing, global mobility and the luxury villa market in the Caribbean.

Morton heads the company as CEO, with his wife serving as president and daughter Maggie also working there. Their other daughter, Cristina, is the founder of immigration law firm Zohil-Morton Law.

Tourists Claim to Spot Legendary Lake Champlain Monster Champy

0

A new report from Lake Champlain has revived the enduring question of whether the United States has its own answer to Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster.

Guests at Marine Village Cottages near Point au Roche said they noticed an unusual shape cutting through the water during a visit to the expansive lake on August 7.

Beth Haig said she was the first member of the group to notice what appeared to be a mysterious creature, according to the Adirondack Explorer.

“At first it looked like a wave, but then you could see something serpent-like,” Haig recalled. “It moved up and down as it traveled across the lake, and it was large.”

The sighting, reported near the New York-Vermont border, quickly led to renewed speculation that the group may have seen Champy, the legendary creature said to live beneath Lake Champlain’s surface.

Hailee Finkle, who was with Haig at the time, managed to record a 24-second cellphone video before the unexplained shape disappeared.

“I’m definitely more of a scientific person, but it was strange seeing it in person,” Finkle said. “I’m trying to believe it could be something beyond a scientific explanation.”

Susan Sisti, Haig’s mother, said the figure appeared to move across the lake at roughly the speed of a small motorboat.

Stories about Champy have inspired local businesses along Lake Champlain and draw tourists to the picturesque lake

The Champy legend has helped inspire local businesses along Lake Champlain while attracting tourists to the scenic waterfront

Champy is often compared to Scotland's famous Loch Ness Monster, another globally popular mythical creature

Champy is frequently likened to Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster, one of the world’s best-known mythical creatures

“It was almost as if an alligator was partly submerged,” Sisti said. “The front looked like the top of its head, and then there were several raised sections behind it.”

She added that the shape appeared to be “at least three or four times” larger than any alligator she had ever seen—while noting that she had never encountered an alligator in Lake Champlain.

Tales of Champy have circulated for centuries, helping fuel themed cafés, souvenir products and distinctive storefronts around Lake Champlain. The legend also remains a draw for visitors exploring the picturesque lake.

More than 100 alleged Champy sightings have been reported. The earliest account is often linked to Samuel de Champlain, the founder of Québec and the lake’s namesake, who reportedly encountered the creature in 1609.

The explorer described it as a five-foot gar with a body “as big as my thigh,” a head as large as two fists and silvery-gray scales reportedly so tough that a dagger could not pierce them.

Other accounts have portrayed Champy as everything from a gigantic sea serpent to a dragon-like animal. In 1819, a man identified as Captain Crum told The Plattsburgh Republican that he had seen a 187-foot black serpent in Bulwagga Bay.

According to the newspaper’s account, the creature had a seahorse-shaped head, “three teeth,” a white star on its forehead, a red band around its neck and huge eyes described as being “the color of peeled onion.”

Like the Loch Ness Monster, Champy remains a powerful part of local folklore despite the lack of credible scientific evidence confirming that either mythical creature exists.

Filmmakers Kelly Tabor and Richard Rossi allegedly spotted the sea creature on camera in early June this year. Experts have said the sighting could have been an illusion (Stock Image: Loch Ness Monster)

Filmmakers Kelly Tabor and Richard Rossi allegedly spotted the sea creature on camera in early June this year.

They documented a gigantic, mysterious shape in Lake Champlain, which viewers said is proof that Champ exists.

‘To see our hometown legend of Champ being debated and celebrated from New York to Tokyo is an incredible honor for our entire lake community,’ Tabor told the outlet.

‘When I saw it, I saw it was like a skinny neck, and that the body got larger,’ Tabor told the Daily Mail.

‘It looked like the skinny neck was oscillating back and forth, as if it was grazing underwater. My eyes were just popping out.’

Rossi said it is always good to get footage of any sightings checked by experts.

‘It’s exciting to hear about new sightings. We encourage all new sightings to go through a vetting process of having scientists with PhD degrees examine them as we our doing with our sighting,’ he told the Daily Mail.

The duo is now working on The Secrets of Lake Champlain, the sequel to their movie Lucy and the Lake Monster.

The movie is in post production and is expected to be ready for release to theaters nationwide in 2027. ‘We look forward to sharing it with all of you,’ he said.

Despite the alleged sightings, many people remain sceptical that Champy exists.

Experts have said that large lakes can often create optical illusions, Adirondack Explorer reported.

It can be floating logs, swimming animals, clumps of seaweed and unusual light conditions that create the appearance of something far more mysterious than reality.

However, both New York and Vermont governments have said that the creature ‘should not be disturbed, injured or harassed’ if it exists.

As for the recent sighting, Haig said she doesn’t believe the sighting was Champ but it was still interesting.

‘I grew up on that lake. I’ve never seen this before,’ she said.

Trump Seeks to Set Aside ‘Decoy Dan’ Alaska Senate Ballots

0

Alaska’s Republican-controlled government asked a federal judge Saturday to throw out a lawsuit brought at President Donald Trump’s urging that seeks to block certification of a potential Democratic victory in the state’s closely watched U.S. Senate contest. In its filing, the state said there was “no reason for this Court to entertain this meritless lawsuit any longer.”

The forceful response from Alaska’s attorney general came after U.S. District Court Judge Sharon L. Gleason set Saturday as the deadline for arguments on whether the case should be dismissed before any hearing takes place.

The U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit has drawn widespread criticism from election law specialists. It asks Gleason to delay certification of a potential win by Democrat Mary Peltola while the court examines whether voters were misled by a second candidate whose name matched that of Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, Peltola’s primary opponent.

On Friday, the Justice Department expanded its request, asking the court to set aside every ballot marked for the second Dan Sullivan. The department said those votes should be separated while officials determine whether voters mistakenly backed a spoiler candidate.

Alaska officials called that proposal “both disturbing and impossible” in Saturday’s filing. They argued that identifying those ballots would not be possible without compromising the privacy of individual voters.

Trump has also called for Peltola to face prosecution. His demand followed a New York Times report that internal messages and social media posts seemingly indicate the Democratic campaign played a role in encouraging the second Sullivan—a retired teacher from the remote fishing community of Petersburg—to enter the race.

Here’s the latest on the ‘Decoy Dan’ scandal in the ongoing Alaska Senate race:

The state countered that the ballot clearly differentiates between the two candidates. The senator appears as a Republican and the incumbent, while the other candidate is identified only as “Daniel J. Sullivan.”

“State officials carefully designed the ballot to minimize voter confusion,” Alaska representatives wrote. They urged the judge to dismiss the lawsuit permanently and permit the state to complete the election process—including counting ballots and certifying the results—without what they called unwarranted federal intervention.

Heavy Rain Threatens Flooding in Saturated Parts of the US Southwest

0

Heavy rain was forecast to begin Saturday evening, raising the risk of flash flooding across already saturated parts of the U.S. Southwest through Monday, the National Weather Service said.

Some areas could receive up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of rain after a series of weather systems produced a deadly season of intense rainfall across the region. In the Phoenix area Friday evening, emergency crews rescued people from multiple vehicles stranded on flooded roads.

“It’s not going to take much rainfall to be impactful at all in some of these locations just because of how saturated they are,” said Allison Santorelli, a meteorologist with the Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Flood watches were issued for nearly all of Arizona, along with parts of southern Utah, southwestern Colorado, western New Mexico and southern Nevada. The alerts cover the Four Corners region, the sparsely populated area where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah meet, which has been particularly affected by recent rainfall.

Santorelli said the weekend storm could produce both flash flooding and flooding along small streams and rivers.

The Phoenix Fire Department said on X that crews rescued people from four vehicles on flooded streets Friday night. In nearby Scottsdale, fire Capt. Dave Folio said on Facebook that firefighters were assisting someone trapped in a vehicle when another vehicle carrying two people entered the same floodwaters and also required rescue.

In a video posted on Facebook, Folio warned that just 2 inches (5 centimeters) of water can “sweep your vehicle off its wheels.” He said the vehicles involved were surrounded by 3 to 4 feet (0.9 to 1.2 meters) of water.

In Bullhead City, Arizona, along the state’s border with California, Friday’s heavy rain washed water, rocks and debris onto streets throughout the city, officials said in Facebook posts. Parks were also closed.

The Most Offensive Celebrity Halloween Costumes Ever Revealed

0

Halloween has long given celebrities one night a year to reinvent themselves as almost anyone imaginable.

For celebrities, Halloween has long been the perfect opportunity to step into an entirely different identity.

Many stars use October 31 to bring their boldest fashion ideas to life, recreating pop culture icons and taking on daring characters from film and television.

While some are celebrated for their imagination, others have faced fierce criticism over controversial Halloween costume choices.

Past costumes have touched on deeply sensitive subjects, including deceased celebrities, abuse, racism and even pedophilia. But which stars have previously appeared in some of the most upsetting outfits?

The list includes Bill Maher, who portrayed the late Steve Irwin with a fake stingray barb and blood across his chest, and Julianne Hough, who faced backlash after wearing blackface while dressing as a character from Orange is the New Black.

Here, the Daily Mail revisits some of the most offensive celebrity Halloween costumes from years past.

In 1999, actress Chloë Sevigny appeared in a costume portraying Princess Diana as dead.

The much-loved former member of the British Royal Family had died in a Paris car crash just two years earlier.

Sevigny appeared to reference the accident with a cut on her chin and dark makeup around both eyes, while additional cosmetics gave her complexion a paler appearance.

Her beige blazer left little doubt about the reference, with the words ‘Die Di’ written across the lapel.

Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher also drew criticism for dressing as beloved animal expert and television personality Steve Irwin, just one month after Irwin died in a stingray attack in September 2006.

Maher recreated Irwin’s ‘The Crocodile Hunter’ persona, adding a fake stingray barb protruding from his chest.

He later discussed the costume on his talk show, saying: ‘People who really love animals understand if you get killed by one, chances are you were doing something to it you shouldn’t have been.’

Former Dancing With The Stars professional Julianne Hough became one of the most widely cited examples of a controversial celebrity Halloween costume when she dressed as Crazy Eyes, the character played by Uzo Aduba in the Netflix series Orange Is The New Black.

Her use of blackface sparked widespread offense. The racist practice involves applying makeup to caricature Black people, a tradition rooted in 19th-century minstrel shows that perpetuates harmful and degrading stereotypes.

She later apologized for the costume on X as she said: ‘It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way.

‘I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.’

In 2025, model Julia Fox shocked fans after she stepped out as Jackie Kennedy in the immediate aftermath of John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

She opted for a replica of Jackie’s iconic pink Chanel-style skirt suit before heavily staining it with fake blood.

Fox later took to Instagram to share the reasoning behind the outfit, writing that it was not a costume but a ‘statement.’

‘When her husband was assassinated, she refused to change out of her blood-stained clothes, saying, “I want them to see what they’ve done.” The image of the delicate pink suit splattered with blood is one of the most haunting juxtapositions in modern history. Beauty and horror. Poise and devastation,’ the actress wrote.

Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire and a friend dressed as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard just a year after their defamation case, sparked by Heard’s claims that Depp had abused her. The actor strongly denied all allegations made by his ex-wife.

The photos from the Instagram post showed Hampshire holding a bottle of wine as their friend channeled Heard with an upset face.

The post was later deleted and Hampshire issued an apology. She wrote: ‘I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe. Domestic abuse is never, ever funny.’

Depp famously lost the libel action which he brought at the UK High Court in 2020, after being called a ‘wife beater,’ but successfully brought a libel action against Amber in a US court in 2022. The jury also ruled with Heard on one of her three countersuit claims, finding Johnny’s lawyer had defamed her in that instance.

As a result of the controversy, Depp’s reputation took a battering with his stock as one of the world’s leading actors dramatically falling amid sensational headlines of domestic abuse, sexual violence, drug taking and excessive drinking.

Ashley Benson was blasted on social media as she dressed as Cecil the Lion for an advertisement.

The animal was named in the original upload but it was later edited before the post was ultimately deleted.

Cecil the Lion was killed in July 2015 by American dentist and trophy hunter Walter Palmer in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park and stirred up plenty of controversy at the time.

She later tried to deny that it referenced the slain animal as she wrote: ‘Yesterday’s post was in poor taste and I absolutely regret all of the hurt that photo caused.

‘My costume was not Cecil the Lion, when I saw that, I contacted my management who handled the post and had it immediately changed.’

American Psychological Association Rejects U.S. House Report on Antisemitism

The president and CEO of the American Psychological Association dismissed the findings of a House report alleging antisemitism within the organization, telling colleagues on Thursday that the APA had held listening sessions with Jewish psychologists.

“The APA’s actions not only create a harmful environment for Jewish members but also raise broader concerns about the profession,” a spokesperson for the House Committee on Education and Workforce told JNS.

“When an organization responsible for accrediting psychology programs and shaping professional standards allows ideology to overshadow scholarship, it risks undermining the credibility of the entire field,” the spokesperson said.

Released Thursday, the committee’s report concluded that anti-Israel and anti-Jewish activists had “successfully co-opted” the association.

Internal emails reviewed by the committee showed that APA leaders removed references to terrorism from a statement about Oct. 7 after an affiliated group objected.

The report also described opposition to recognizing a Jewish ethnic psychological association. Critics reportedly argued that Jews benefited from “white privilege.”

“The committee will not only continue to stand up for Jewish psychologists but will work to expose antisemitism wherever it occurs,” the committee spokesperson told JNS.

After the report was published, APA President Wendi S. Williams and CEO Arthur C. Evans, Jr., sent an email to colleagues, which JNS reviewed.

“We don’t agree with this report,” they wrote. “The American Psychological Association unequivocally condemns antisemitism in all its forms.”

The association said it had “held listening sessions with more than 120 Jewish psychologists and stakeholders to better understand concerns” and had “established a Collaborative of Jewish Psychologists to support continued engagement.”

“We recognize that this work requires continued attention and action, and we remain committed to advancing APA’s mission to promote well-being and respect for all,” Williams and Evans wrote.

The Anti-Defamation League released a statement Friday, provided to JNS, thanking the House committee for its report.

“Antisemitism at the American Psychological Association is not isolated,” the organization stated. “It is embedded in its ranks and in its leadership.”

The ADL said that it and other Jewish organizations had “publicly and privately told APA leadership exactly what needed to change, and it failed to act” for more than a year.

“When a healing profession treats one group’s pain with such indifference, Jewish patients are right to wonder whether they will be met with compassion or with contempt,” the ADL stated.

Ex on the Beach Star Pala Negara’s Newborn Son Dies 16 Hours After Birth as Police Investigate

Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the death of Pala Negara’s newborn son.

The Ex on the Beach alum and her fiancé, Chris Hunter, welcomed Harmony Hunter on Aug. 28, almost three weeks after the baby’s due date.

Labor initially began as a planned home birth. However, after complications developed, Negara was taken to Lismore Hospital in New South Wales, Australia, before being transferred to Gold Coast University Hospital in Queensland. Harmony died there after 16 hours, Negara told the Daily Mail in an interview published Oct. 27.

“My body feels broken and aches for our baby, the life we grew together,” Negara wrote in a September Instagram post. “I don’t think we will ever know how to move through this heartbreak.”

Authorities are now investigating the events that led to Harmony’s death.

“Police were notified after the baby was born in the state’s north, about 4.30am on Friday 28 August 2026, and subsequently died at a Gold Coast Hospital later that day,” a spokesperson for the New South Wales Police Force told . “A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.”

Before the birth, Negara had joined a home birth program operated through Byron Central Hospital, which also oversaw her prenatal care.

“We did everything right,” Negara told the Daily Mail. “We were under the Medicare system and I had my 41-week scan and everything was fine.”

But after she reached 41 weeks and six days, Negara said she received a text informing her that the program’s care was ending “because of its gestational limit.”

Seven days later, on Aug. 28, Negara went into labor.

“I understand a rare silent placental abruption occurred during delivery and was identified only afterwards,” Negara told the Daily Mail. “Paramedics were called and, to my recollection, arrived approximately 40 minutes later.”

Negara said Harmony lived for 16 hours before dying at Gold Coast University Hospital. She added that the Queensland coroner’s autopsy attributed the death to hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy, or HIE.

HIE is a severe form of brain injury that can occur in infants following a difficult birth.

“Alongside our devastating grief,” Negara told the outlet, “I am receiving counseling and recovering from postpartum hemorrhage.”

Negara told news.com.au that she believes her family was “left stranded” by a medical system that “broke its promise,” leaving them to “handle the fallout alone.”

“Going into unexpected spontaneous labor on my own… [is] something no mother or father should ever have to endure,” Negara said. “Pregnancy is the most vulnerable time for a woman. A mother cannot transfer her own clinical file, nor should she ever have to guess how to navigate hospital maternity escalation while 42 weeks pregnant.”

A spokesperson for Northern NSW Local Health District, which oversees Byron Central Hospital, offered condolences to Negara and her family.

“We have cooperated fully with the Queensland Coroner and have responded to their requests for information,” the spokesperson told news.com.au. “As this matter is still being investigated, we are unable to comment further.”

Negara later shared details of Harmony’s planned burial on Instagram.

“We will soon lay our angel to rest on Bundjalung Country where he was born, the land that has held my family and continues to hold our family,” she wrote in a September post. “We know you will return to us again old soul, we can feel you surrounding us, our Angel.”

Spokespeople for Negara, Byron Central Hospital and the Queensland Coroner’s Court did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Oxygen.

Poundland Collapse Could Put 30,000 Jobs at Risk, Founder Warns

0

Poundland’s founder has warned that the retailer’s collapse could put as many as 30,000 jobs at risk.

Steve Smith, who no longer owns the discount chain, has accused its current owners of being “greedy” as Poundland faces the prospect of administration.

The company’s future remains uncertain, with pressure mounting on US investment group Gordon Brothers to reconsider its decision to reject a bid from Northern Irish firm Martin Property Group, which says it can save the business.

Mr Smith, who co-founded Poundland in 1990, said a collapse would affect far more than the retailer’s own workforce and could result in tens of thousands of job losses across the wider supply chain.

“If Gordon Brothers are being greedy then it is going to cost thousands of jobs,” he wrote in a lengthy LinkedIn post. “In the newspapers it says 12,000 jobs are at risk. My estimate is more like 30,000 jobs.”

He said the potential losses extended beyond Poundland employees, warning that the retailer’s thousands of suppliers could also be hit. Some, he claimed, depended almost entirely on the chain and could themselves be forced into administration.

Mr Smith also argued that if Poundland entered administration, taxpayers would ultimately bear the cost of supporting thousands of unemployed workers, while liquidators would “make a lot of money”.

He added that he had attempted to contact the current owners “several times”, but claimed they “never returned my call”.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Mr Smith’s own attempt to buy Poundland back had been rejected, despite him having sufficient funding to purchase the entire business at its current £30million valuation.

He said Gordon Brothers had refused to engage meaningfully with his proposal and confirmed that he now backed the offer from Martin Property Group.

Mr Smith is the latest prominent voice to criticise the owners’ approach to the retailer’s rescue negotiations.

A Poundland collapse would be one of the biggest high street failures since Debenhams shut its stores in 2021, resulting in the loss of about 12,000 jobs.

Sir Andy Street, the former managing director of John Lewis and former Mayor of the West Midlands, said the apparent dismantling of Poundland was “disgraceful”. He asked: “Why has a viable bid been rejected in favour of breaking up the business?”

“The owners must be called in to explain this. Poundland must be saved to protect thousands of jobs,” added Sir Andy, whose former constituency included Walsall, home to Poundland’s head office.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he wanted to protect jobs. His Makerfield constituency includes a Poundland distribution centre where 270 positions could be lost.

“We want to see jobs protected. If there was a potential owner to avoid this that hasn’t been accepted, then the Business Secretary [Jonathan Reynolds] and I want to know why that is the case,” said Andy Burnham.

In a social media post, Reform’s Robert Jenrick said a collapse would be an example of “crony capitalism”.

He said: “People have attacked me for taking up this fight, saying: ‘Businesses go under all the time, that’s just the free market’.”

‘Sure, but this is crony capitalism and the 12,000 workers deserve better.’

Poundland has struggled in recent years after ‘straying from the single £1 price point that defined its core identity’ and expanding into selling clothes and frozen food, said retail expert Jonathan De Mello.

Retailers are also battling higher costs, following Government moves to hike wages and employer National Insurance contributions, while shoppers have been lured in by online giants Amazon and Temu.

Other firms thought to be hoping to buy shops include rival Poundstretcher, which is owned by US investment group Fortress, and retailers including Iceland and Lidl.

CDS Superstores, the group behind The Range, Homebase and Wilko, is also thought to be interested. The group is owned by Chris Dawson, known as Britain’s ‘Del Boy Billionaire’.

Modella Capital, which bought WH Smith on the High Street and rebranded under TG Jones, has also been rumoured to be involved in talks.

Bally Auluk, national officer for the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers, said this week has been ‘incredibly distressing’ for Poundland staff and accused Gordon Brothers of attempting to ‘jeopardise their livelihoods’.

He urged its owners to ‘reconsider and to prioritise a unified buyer’.

The Daily Mail has approached Gordon Brothers and Pepco for a comment.
