Teen Killed by Speeding Women in Audi, Mercedes Collision

0

Inset: Julia Henderson (Mecklenburg County Jail) and Alex Jaden Rodriguez (Whitley’s Funeral Home). Background: North Carolina state troopers investigate after two women allegedly racing crashed into Alex’s motorcycle, tragically taking his life (WSOC).

In North Carolina, authorities have detained two women accused of recklessly speeding down a highway at astonishing speeds of over 132 mph. These drivers, one piloting an Audi and the other a Mercedes, were allegedly racing side by side when they violently collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the tragic death of a teenage rider.

Julia Henderson, aged 22, and Estrella Gutierrez-Perez, 21, now face serious charges, including second-degree murder and engaging in a spontaneous speed contest, following the unfortunate demise of 17-year-old Alex Jaden Rodriguez.

The dramatic incident unfolded late in the evening on July 25, around 7:30 p.m., as detailed in probable cause arrest affidavits. Witnesses and law enforcement reported that Henderson, behind the wheel of her Audi, reached blistering speeds of 132 mph, while Gutierrez-Perez was racing close behind in her Mercedes at speeds exceeding 120 mph. This high-stakes race took place on the southbound lanes of Interstate 85, close to the city of Charlotte.

In stark contrast, the legal speed limit on this stretch of highway is 60 mph.

The two vehicles collided with Alex, ejecting him from the motorcycle, per cops. Gutierrez-Perez’s Mercedes overturned and ended up on its roof. The motorcycle was pinned under the Audi, according to troopers with North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Troopers said Alex was going the speed limit. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A driver in a fourth vehicle involved in the crash suffered minor injuries.

Henderson was arrested on Thursday and is at the Mecklenburg County Jail without bond. Gutierrez-Perez was arrested Sunday evening. She’s at the Alamance County Jail without bond, records show. Their next court dates were not immediately listed.

Alex’s obituary describes him as a “dedicated student” who graduated a year early from high school.

“He was pursuing his passion for mechanics at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, aspiring to become a light duty diesel mechanic,” the obituary reads. “Known for his love of working on small engines and his ability to fix anything with a motor, Alex also cherished time spent hunting, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. His warm nature meant he never met a stranger, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.”

Virginia Police Hunt Additional Suspects in VSU Shooting

0

Authorities are on the lookout for additional individuals involved in a shooting at Virginia State University that left five people injured. Investigators are currently assessing whether these individuals acted as aggressors or if they were responding in self-defense.

This update comes as a 19-year-old suspect, not enrolled at the university, is being held without bail. Virginia State University President Makola Abdullah addressed the community on Sunday evening, ensuring them of ongoing investigations and the university’s full cooperation with law enforcement agencies at all levels.

In response to the incident, there will be an increased police presence on campus to ensure safety while the investigation remains active.

Camron Harris, 19, of Henrico

Early Saturday morning, a shooting at Virginia State University led to the arrest of 19-year-old Camron Harris of Henrico. Authorities found him concealing himself in a closet within Seward Hall, a residence on campus, around 4 p.m. Saturday—more than 14 hours post-shooting and following the lifting of a campus lockdown. The number of additional shooters involved remains unclear, as their identities have not been disclosed. However, Lt. James Lamb, commander of the Chesterfield County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, confirmed that detectives are working diligently to identify these individuals and understand their involvement in the incident.

“We don’t have specific locations that we are looking [at] yet as we are working on identifying them,” Lamb told AP in an email.

Virginia State University is a historically Black university located in Ettrick, Virginia, about 24 miles south of the state capital of Richmond. The public university has about 5,700 students and was the first fully state-supported four-year college for Black Americans.

The victims ranged in age from 17 to 23 and only one of them – a male, 20, with non‑life‑threatening injuries – was a student at the university, according to police. A non-student male, 21, sustained critical injuries, while a male, 23; female, 19; and male, 17, have non‑life‑threatening injuries.

The shooting erupted at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday near the university’s Quad Annexes residential area. Virginia State University police and Chesterfield County officers responding to the scene found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside campus residence halls. The shooting prompted a lockdown that was later lifted after authorities said there was no immediate threat to the campus community.

Police later arrested Camron Harris, 19, of Henrico, after officers found him hiding in a closet inside Seward Hall, a campus residence hall, at about 4 p.m. Saturday — more than 14 hours after the shooting and several hours after the lockdown had been lifted.

Harris, who police said is not a Virginia State student, faces four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was being held without bond at the Chesterfield County jail and was due in state court Monday.

The 20-year-old Virginia State University student was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released from the hospital. A 21-year-old man remained in critical condition, while the other victims were expected to recover, according to police and university officials.

In his Sunday night message, Abdullah said “the investigation remains ongoing” and thanked university police as well as the other law enforcement agencies assisting in the case. He acknowledged the concern the shooting had caused among parents and families and said student and campus safety remained among the university’s highest priorities.

Virginia State remains a “strong and resilient community,” his statement concluded.

Ariana Grande Reveals Matching Tattoo with Boyfriend Ricky Álvarez

Their romance is etched in enduring ink.

Ariana Grande has once again expanded her impressive array of tattoos, debuting fresh ink during a show in London as part of her “Eternal Sunshine” tour. Observant fans spotted that the pop star, aged 33, had inscribed a new phrase along her collarbone, which seemed to be the heartfelt message, “I do love you.”

Intriguingly, Grande’s beau, Ricky Álvarez, sports the exact phrase on his left collarbone, a matching sentiment albeit in a differing typeface.

It’s possible that their matching tattoos nod to the iconic 1965 hit by Billy Stewart, evocative of lyrics such as, “I do love you, yes, I do now,” and the affectionate plea, “Pretty little baby said, I want you to try / To understand a that I, that I, that I / I want to be your lover man.”

On August 12, Grande gave a peek at her new tattoo artwork through an Instagram post, where the phrase was enclosed in quotes. In the same post, she made her relationship with Álvarez Instagram official, sharing images that caught the couple in a warm embrace, showcasing their love to the world.

Page Six exclusively confirmed that the pair, who dated from 2015 to 2016, rekindled their romance last month following Grande’s breakup with Ethan Slater. Álvarez first joined Grande’s team as one of her backup dancers for a performance in 2014, and stayed on for her Honeymoon Tour in 2015

It’s hardly the first time Grande has commemorated an important relationship with new body art.

She and her “Wicked” co-star Cynthia Erivo have multiple matching tattoos, as did she and ex-fiancé Pete Davidson during their whirlwind relationship; most of those have since been removed or covered up.

Hayden Panettiere’s Struggle: Walking Aid Months Before Passing

0

In the months leading up to her untimely passing at 36, Hayden Panettiere was seen relying heavily on crutches and the aid of friends to move around.

The renowned Nashville actress was found lifeless on Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina, with circumstances surrounding her demise yet to become clear. According to a 911 dispatcher, she appeared to have experienced a ‘cardiac arrest.’

Another dispatcher reportedly suggested that an overdose might have been suspected in Panettiere’s case.

Over the last year, Panettiere battled an enigmatic back injury that left her motionless without assistance, a struggle evident in the months preceding her death.

Video taken in May appears to show the impact the injury had on Panettiere as she struggled to walk while out in New York, her right leg visibly causing her some trouble.

However, she bravely attempted to conceal her struggles, often wearing a bright smile as she made her way into buildings.

While arriving at CBS Studios to promote her memoir that same day, Panettiere also relied on an assistant for support as she emerged from her car.

She held the woman’s hand tightly as she walked inside the studio, a smile on her face again deflecting attention from her physical troubles.

In March, Panettiere was also seen on crutches while at LAX with on-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson.

When asked about the crutches, Panettiere explained that she was suffering from ‘some pinched nerves in my lower back,’ in footage obtained by the Daily Mail.

However, she added that she was ‘on the mend,’ offering a smile and a thumbs-up before climbing into a black SUV outside the airport.

It is an injury that Panettiere struggled to find answers for and one that left her fearing she would be ‘paralyzed’ for the rest of her life.

Panettiere opened up about the issue during a May interview with Women’s Health, revealing it all began when she woke up and felt ‘nothing but pins and needles’ from the waist down.

‘I’ve been dealing with an injury for the past year,’ she told the outlet during a barre workout. ‘Some nerve damage in my lower back.’

‘I quite literally woke up and felt nothing but pins and needles from my waist down,’ she said.

‘I wasn’t able to bend my toes or lift my foot at all. No one was able to give me a solid answer.’

‘It was like that for so long, that I was sitting there going, “Oh my gosh, am I gonna be paralyzed for the rest of my… life?”

‘It’s the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me physically, for sure.’

The former child star, who was known for her roles on the hit NBC series Heroes and musical drama Nashville, was found dead in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday afternoon. She leaves behind an 11-year-old daughter.

Representatives for Panettiere announced on Sunday: ‘It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden.

‘She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her – and to the millions who watched her onscreen.’

Detectives confirmed to the Daily Mail that they responded to the apartment block in Greenville yesterday afternoon after they received a 911 call from an ‘acquaintance’ of Panettiere, describing her as ‘unresponsive’.

In the dispatch audio of the call made at 1.51pm, a female dispatcher described Panettiere as suffering a ‘cardiac arrest.’ A few moments later, a male dispatcher could be heard saying that Panettiere had suffered a suspected overdose at the home in Greenville.

Officers and paramedics carried out chest compressions while trying to save Panettiere’s life.

The actress – who was due to turn 37 this Friday – was pronounced dead at the scene just over 40 minutes later at 2.32pm.

Police and the local coroner’s office are probing the death, but said the ‘preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.’

Panettiere had an 11-year-old daughter called Kaya following a life-threatening birth, but later gave full custody to her former fiancé, Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko.

The star first appeared in soap operas, then gained wider recognition for her role in the 2000 sports drama Remember the Titans with Denzel Washington, and as the voice of Dot in Pixar’s 1998 film A Bug’s Life.

Panettiere later found fame playing cheerleader Claire Bennet in the superhero drama Heroes before starring as country singer Juliette Barnes for six seasons on Nashville.

She earned two Golden Globe nominations for best supporting actress on the show, while her singing produced 11 entries on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

Panettiere’s film credits include 2006’s Bring It On: All or Nothing, the comedy-drama film Raising Helen, and appearances in Scream 4 and Scream VI as Kirby Reed.

Erin Patterson’s Return to Court: Updates on the Mushroom Poisoning Case

0

Erin Patterson, infamously known as ‘the mushroom killer,’ is set to make a courtroom comeback this week as she seeks to overturn her shocking murder convictions. These accusations stem from the deliberate poisoning of her three family members.

Last year, Patterson, aged 51, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 33 years behind bars, after being found guilty of the murders of her estranged husband’s parents, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, as well as Gail’s 66-year-old sister, Heather Wilkinson.

The grisly incident occurred in July 2023, at her home in Leongatha, Gippsland, Victoria, where she served a meal of beef Wellington secretly infused with deadly death cap mushrooms to her relatives.

Patterson was further charged with the attempted murder of Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, who managed to survive despite becoming critically ill.

In her defense, Patterson insisted that the inclusion of toxic mushrooms was a tragic mistake, asserting that the deadly ingredient found its way into the dish accidentally. She acknowledged trying to conceal her error out of sheer panic.

The case garnered unprecedented public and media attention and was the subject of several books, television shows and podcasts.

Why is Erin Patterson returning to court?

Patterson will face a two-day hearing that starts on Wednesday at Victoria’s Court of Appeal in Melbourne’s CBD.

The hearing is an application for leave to appeal, which is a formal request to the court to hear the appeal.

The prosecution and defence will submit written and oral arguments, before a full panel of three judges will determine whether the case has merit for an appeal.

If Patterson is successful, the court could quash her convictions and order a retrial, or acquit her.

If the court rules against her, her convictions will stand, and she will serve out the remainder of her sentence.

In that instance, she could appeal to the High Court, which is Australia’s highest court and can overturn decisions made in lower courts.

The Director of Public Prosecutions is also appealing the length of the sentence, arguing Patterson — who will be 82 years old when she is eligible for parole in 2056 — should be locked up for life.

If they are successful, Patterson could be re-sentenced to life without parole or a non-parole period of greater than 33 years.

Patterson is not expected to attend the hearing in person, instead appearing via video link from prison.

What is Patterson appealing?

In documents lodged with the court last year, Patterson, who has always maintained her innocence, argued she suffered a “miscarriage of justice” during the 10-week trial, laying out seven grounds of appeal.

She claimed the prosecution’s five-day cross-examination of her was “unfair and oppressive”, while the prosecution’s closing address “caused a substantial miscarriage of justice”.

The prosecution “changed its case” by implying there was a motive for murder in the closing address, despite saying there was no motive for the killings in their opening statement, the documents state.

Patterson also criticised key prosecution evidence, including cell tower evidence and sightings of death cap mushrooms in Loch and Outtrim in Victoria, which was used at trial.

The final ground of appeal argued there was a “fundamental irregularity” when the jury was sequestered for deliberations.

The Victorian Supreme Court previously confirmed the 12-person jury was unwittingly staying at the same hotel as the lead detective and two members of the prosecution.
