Australia’s $271 Billion Health Expenditure May Fall Short of Expectations

0

In Australia, the annual expenditure on health-related goods and services now averages $10,037 per person, marking a substantial rise compared to a decade ago, according to the latest findings from a government report.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s (AIHW) analysis, titled “Australia’s Health 2026,” suggests that the total spending on health reached $270.5 billion for the year 2023-24, which is the period most recently analyzed.

When adjusted for inflation, this figure represents an increase from the $8,615 per person recorded ten years ago. This sum encompasses contributions from federal, state, and territory governments, as well as health insurers, individuals, and various non-governmental entities.

The statistics, part of the government’s latest annual summary released on Thursday, paint a picture of the country’s health status.

The report further highlights that Australians are enjoying longer lifespans, even though there was a recent downturn in life expectancy during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis. Boys born between 2022 and 2024 are expected to reach 81.1 years of age, while girls are anticipated to live until 85.1 years.

However, chronic disease conditions continue to have a considerable impact on the health of Australians, with 61 per cent of people living with one. One in five also experienced a mental health condition like anxiety or depression in the last 12 months.

“Our health is shaped by many different factors, including our environment, lifestyle and access to the services we need,” AIHW spokesperson Louise Gates said.

“Good health helps Australians stay connected to their communities, continue learning and working, and live long, fulfilling lives.”

Healthcare spending continues to rise

Annually, Australia spends more on health care than the OECD average, at $10,500 per person, compared with $8,400 overseas.

The largest share of that spending is on hospital care, which accounted for 42 per cent of total health expenditure.

By contrast, primary healthcare, including public health, accounted for 33 per cent of total spend, a gap that has continued to widen, the AIHW said.

Out-of-pocket healthcare spending remains the largest non-government contribution to total spending, climbing to $44 billion, or $1,634 per person.

Out-of-pocket spending has increased by an average of 1.4 per cent each year since 2013–14.

Mental health diagnoses increase

Mental health conditions are affecting a growing number of Australians, particularly young people.

While the overall proportion of people experiencing a mental disorder has remained relatively stable over time, young people aged 16–24 have experienced a significant increase.

Diagnoses for conditions such as anxiety and depression increased from 26 per cent to 39 per cent between 2007 and 2020–22 for young people.

Young people are also the most likely demographic to access Medicare-subsidised mental health services, with young females accessing support at twice the rate of young males.

Prescription of antidepressants has risen from 120 people per 1,000 to 139 people over the past decade. Stimulant medications used in the treatment of ADHD have risen considerably from six to 28 people per thousand.

Inequalities remain

Of the 18.5 million people above the age of 15 who needed to see a general practitioner (GP) in 2024–25, one in four said they had delayed doing so at least once or avoided doing so altogether.

“Potential barriers to Australians seeing a GP include cost, service availability and waiting times,” Gates said.

Those not seeing a GP due to cost have risen to 7.7 per cent, almost doubling over the past decade.

Barriers to access sit alongside stark health inequalities. After adjusting for age, the death rate in 2022–24 for people living in the lowest socioeconomic area was 1.5 times as high as the rate for people living in the highest socioeconomic areas.

Similarly, people living in very remote areas had a death rate 1.6 times as high as people living in major cities.

“While many health outcomes for Australians are improving, the growing impact of chronic conditions, poor mental health and an ageing population mean prevention and effective, equitable and coordinated care from health, disability, aged care and other welfare systems are more important than ever,” Gates said.

However, the report found there has been considerable improvement in the health of the First Nations population, although further progress remains.

Among First Nations people, healthy years lost from illness and premature deaths decreased by 6.3 per cent between 2011 and 2022, driven by declines in premature deaths from cardiovascular diseases.

Many health outcomes avoidable

Overweight and obesity are increasingly impacting the health of Australians and are now the leading risk factor contributing to ill health and death, overtaking tobacco smoking for the first time.

Around 13.2 million adults (67 per cent) and 1.4 million children and adolescents (27 per cent) were living with overweight or obesity in 2022–24.

“Around 36 per cent of Australia’s total disease burden in 2024 could have been prevented or reduced by addressing risk and environmental factors,” Gates said.

Sayan Mitra of the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney said the report reveals a health system built around “late intervention” rather than proactivity.

“Many chronic diseases begin years before a clinical diagnosis,” he said, pointing to measurable health indicators as practical but underutilised information.

“Australia’s next major health gain will depend on shifting digital health from passive data collection to active prevention infrastructure, using individual-level signals at population scale to identify risk earlier and act before chronic disease becomes established,” he said.

“Australia cannot treat its way out of chronic disease, and acting as though it can will only make the burden larger.”

Secret Strategy: How Trump’s Air Force One Swap Ensured Presidential Safety

0

On Thursday, the White House reported that President Trump’s decision to switch from the newly donated Qatari Air Force One back to the original presidential aircraft for his return trip from Turkey was a deliberate “distraction” tactic aimed at safeguarding the President.

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung dismissed claims that the aircraft swap was due to any direct security threats. He clarified that the new plane features advanced security systems designed to protect the President and his team.

Cheung elaborated, “The President has emphasized that many adversaries are targeting him, and we employ every possible strategy—including distraction and misdirection—to counter such threats.”

President Trump had earlier announced his intention to use the original Air Force One for his journey back to the U.S., following his declaration that he was at the top of Iran’s “kill list.”

Taco Bell Withdraws Key Ingredients Amidst Spread of Intense Parasite

0

Taco Bell has made the decision to remove certain ingredients from its menu in response to a widespread outbreak of a parasitic infection that results in severe digestive distress.

The popular fast-food chain has informed customers at various locations across the United States that it will temporarily stop serving lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, and cilantro onion. This measure is due to the increasing spread of the cyclospora parasite.

This precaution affects several Taco Bell outlets, including those in Michigan, where close to 1,000 people have been affected by cyclosporiasis. This infection, caused by the cyclospora parasite, triggers abrupt and intense gastrointestinal symptoms, such as severe diarrhea and vomiting.

According to reports from local media, notices displayed at the restaurants state: ‘We are currently unable to sell lettuce, cilantro onion, pico de gallo, and guacamole due to a nationwide recall. We apologize for the inconvenience.’

‘Any menu items that usually include these ingredients will be served without them.’

It is not clear what recall the company is referring to. No food recalls have been issued in connection with the spread of cyclosporiasis cases.

Items that include at least one of these ingredients are tacos, the Crunchwrap Supreme and certain Cantina Chicken items.

It’s unclear if any Taco Bell consumers have been sickened by cyclosporiasis. The Daily Mail has reached out to the chain for comment.

The notices come as at least 1,900 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported nationwide this year. No source of the parasite is known at this time and state and federal health officials are investigating.

Health officials from 29 states have confirmed to the Daily Mail that they are experiencing cases.

North Carolina and New York have reported the second- and third-most cases behind Michigan, with 145 and 125 confirmed illnesses, respectively.

However, due to reporting delays, it is possible actual case counts are higher. The Daily Mail is awaiting responses from other states.

CDC data, which has not been updated since July 1, only shows 145 cases in 17 states.

Cyclosporiasis is acquired through eating or drinking food or beverages contaminated with the parasite, often from feces.

The cyclospora parasite particularly tends to cling to raw, fresh produce such as leafy greens, herbs and soft berries that have bumpy surfaces where contaminants can hide.

Previous outbreaks have been linked to bagged salad kits, cilantro, basil and other leafy green produce – though no source or suspected source has been identified in this outbreak.

Human-to-human transmission is rare.

The Cleveland Clinic has warned: ‘Cyclosporiasis is an illness you get from the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. It causes watery, and sometimes explosive, diarrhea and other stomach problems.’

Symptoms usually occur about a week after exposure.

If not treated, cyclosporiasis could last for more than a month, with symptoms subsiding and reappearing multiple times.

To prevent the disease, the CDC recommends avoiding consuming food or water at risk of contamination with feces and following general food safety preparation guidelines.

Treatment consists of a course of the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, which is sold as Bactrim, Septra or Cotrim.

Most people with a healthy immune system will recover without any treatment.

Cases of cyclosporiasis tend to rise between May and August and it is more common in people returning to the US from foreign travel.

As the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) races to identify a source of the outbreak, it earlier this week issued warnings to restaurant workers to reduce the spread.

For lettuce and greens, the department urged restaurants to buy whole heads of lettuce rather than prewashed, bagged lettuce or salad mixes, throwing away the outer two to three layers of leaves and washing inner leaves under running water.

The MDHHS also recommended washing cilantro and basil thoroughly under running water and separating the leaves. Green onions should be trimmed at the root end and have the outer layer removed before washing under running water.

And for raspberries, the department warns their bumpy surface makes them hard to clean, allowing the cyclospora parasite to hide in the crevices. Snow peas must also be washed under running water.

The agency also noted heating foods to 158F (70C) can kill the cyclospora parasite, and all fresh produce should be washed under running water, even if you plan to peel it.

MDHHS emphasized its food-related recommendations are especially vital for people at a higher risk of dehydration or with weakened immune systems, such as those on chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, young children and older adults.

Apache Pilots Grounded Following Controversial Flyover Salute

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — An ongoing investigation into last week’s Salute from the Shore flyover has led to the temporary suspension of eight Apache pilots from flying duties, according to officials from the South Carolina National Guard.

The suspended pilots continue to report for duty and receive their salaries, as they are engaged in other responsibilities, stated Major Lisa Allen. She emphasized that grounding pilots during investigations is a routine procedure.

Major Allen noted that she could not provide details about the reasons behind the suspension due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. She is also working to determine when the pilots were informed of their suspension and how long the suspension will last.

As the inquiry progresses, it remains uncertain whether the pilots will face further disciplinary measures.

Mom Faces Charges for Assaulting Child and Partner Over Relationship Drama: DA Reports

Inset: Emma Spencer (Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office). The apartment complex in Wisconsin where Emma Spencer is accused of assaulting her young daughter and boyfriend (Google Maps).

A teenager from Wisconsin, frustrated with feeling like the third wheel in a relationship with her boyfriend and another woman, reportedly vented her frustration on her 2-year-old daughter. Authorities allege she hit the child in the face as the toddler played with a teddy bear.

Emma Spencer, 17, from Kenosha, is also accused of attacking her boyfriend due to anger about their “polyamorous relationship,” as outlined in a criminal complaint reviewed by Law&Crime.

The complaint describes how Spencer voiced her insecurity by claiming her boyfriend preferred the other woman and lamented that no one loves her. In response, her boyfriend attempted to comfort her, saying, “If I didn’t love you, why would I have a kid with you?” and gestured towards their daughter. It was then that Spencer allegedly slapped the toddler and grabbed her by the face, causing the child to cry.

Prosecutors stated that on Tuesday, July 7, Spencer’s boyfriend confronted her about the incident, questioning why she had struck their daughter. Spencer allegedly replied that she regretted having the baby, saying she never wanted to be a mother, according to the complaint.

After allegedly attacking their daughter, Spencer set her sights on her boyfriend and started “punching him repeatedly in the chest” after mounting him on their bed, according to prosecutors. The other female in the relationship witnessed both attacks and told investigators that Spencer struck the boyfriend around eight to 10 times before she stopped, the complaint says.

During an earlier incident, Spencer allegedly punched her boyfriend in the groin. She also threw a can of Mountain Dew at him, the complaint says.

After being called to the apartment where Spencer and her boyfriend lived, police spoke to the other female in the relationship and learned that they had only been a “throuple” for three days — with the female moving in with them, according to the complaint.

Spencer and her boyfriend had been together for three years.

“The defendant had recently started dating [the female] approximately one week prior and brought her into the home three days ago for a three-way relationship, which was a mutual decision between the defendant and [the boyfriend],” the complaint explains. “The defendant began having conflicting feelings about the three-way relationship and wanted to take a break. She and [the boyfriend] had been arguing throughout the day about the relationship and their feelings.”

Spencer’s boyfriend told her that she “disregarded people’s feelings and mentally hurt people, which triggered her anger,” according to prosecutors. Spencer allegedly claimed she “blanked out” before attacking her boyfriend and child.

“The defendant described having mental health issues for years, specifically with her ‘grip on reality,'” the complaint says. “The defendant had started seeing a therapist two to three weeks prior, meeting once per week. The therapist wanted to prescribe medication, but the defendant’s mother refused to provide consent.”

When Spencer attacked her daughter, the little girl was “toddling around walking and playing with her teddy bear,” according to the complaint. Police reported a “small scratch” on the child’s nose that appeared old, but there were no other visible injuries.

In Wisconsin, 17-year-olds are automatically charged as adults regardless of the severity of the crime they allegedly committed. They are prosecuted in adult court and held at adult county jails.

Spencer has been charged by the Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office with felony child abuse, misdemeanor battery domestic abuse and disorderly conduct domestic abuse. She is being held at the Kenosha County Jail.

Family Pursues Legal Action After Toddler Mistakenly Declared Dead and Found Alive in Morgue

0

A family is contemplating legal proceedings after a 1-year-old child, initially declared dead at an Arizona hospital, was discovered alive in the morgue.

The child’s parents might face child abuse allegations after confessing to marijuana use and neglecting supervision during a Super Bowl gathering. The child, Vincent Fiordilino, was found unresponsive in a swimming pool, prompting first responders to transport him urgently to a hospital, where he was mistakenly pronounced dead.

The family is preparing to take legal action against Dignity Health Mercy Gilbert Medical Center and the attending physician, known as Dr. Toosi. As reported by AZFamily, bodycam footage captured Dr. Toosi declaring the child deceased at 6:20 p.m., only for the mother and a nurse to soon observe signs of life.

According to a police report reviewed by a local news source, Vincent was still showing potential life signs, as indicated by the movement observed in his chest and stomach area.

When this information was brought to Toosi, the report states, the doctor responded “arrogantly” and said, “he was the doctor, he has the medical degree, he went to medical school for a reason, and to let him do his thing.”

Medical officials later found the child breathing and carrying a pulse just before midnight at the morgue. He was then flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where it was confirmed he was suffering from severe medical issues related to the near-drowning.

According to a GoFundMe drive set up for the boy, Vincent’s kidneys, lungs and liver began shutting down after he arrived at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. An MRI initially identified two small areas of potential brain damage, but later testing reportedly found no brain damage. The fundraiser says Vincent continues to require extensive therapy, ongoing medical monitoring and treatment as he recovers.

Neither Toosi nor the parents have been charged with a crime in relation to the incident. Toosi’s attorney declined to comment on the issue when contacted by AZFamily.

According to AZFamily, a Dignity Health spokesperson said the hospital conducted a review following the incident.

“This is a heartbreaking situation. We immediately conducted a thorough review of all aspects of the care that was provided to learn what happened and to make meaningful changes to strengthen our care,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “Out of respect for the patient’s privacy, we cannot discuss details. We continue to work with the family and their representative. Patient safety and exceptional care is our highest priority.”

Trump to Petition Supreme Court for Rehearing on Birthright Citizenship Debate

0

President Trump has announced plans to request the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider its recent decision that invalidated his executive order on birthright citizenship. The high court struck down the policy just last week.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump referred to the ruling as a “miscarriage of justice” and expressed his determination to seek a rehearing from the Supreme Court. He emphasized the ruling could potentially endanger America unless it is overturned.

In a decision made on the last day of its term, the Supreme Court dismissed the executive order, which was one of Trump’s initial actions as president. The order stipulated that for a child born on U.S. soil to automatically gain citizenship, at least one parent must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent legal status.

The decision was backed by Chief Justice John Roberts, alongside conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett and the liberal Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Their ruling underscored that the 14th Amendment unequivocally guarantees citizenship to nearly all children born in the United States.

In his detailed 26-page opinion, Chief Justice Roberts highlighted, “Citizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights — to freely participate in our political community. The Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to ‘every free-born person in this land.’”

Justice Brett Kavanaugh disagreed with the majority’s decision on whether the order violated the 14th Amendment but voted to block the policy under federal law mirroring its language.

Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch dissented. In his 39-page dissent, Alito wrote the court “made a serious mistake” in upholding birthright citizenship.

While losing parties can ask the high court to rehear cases, the justices rarely grant the request.

Steve Vladeck, a professor at the Georgetown University Law Center, said in 2024 that the high court has not agreed to any rehearing of a ruling in an argued case since 1965 and has not agreed to a plenary rehearing since 1956.

“Instead, the principal significance of rehearing petitions with respect to merits rulings today is how they affect the timing of the remand to lower courts,” Vladeck wrote on his “One First” Substack.

Under federal law, losing parties must petition for the rehearing of a judgment or decision by the high court within 25 days of its entry, unless the court or a justice shortens or extends that timeframe.

“The time for filing a petition for the rehearing of an order denying a petition for a writ of certiorari or extraordinary writ will not be extended,” the law states.

Florida Mayor Clarifies Use of Police Vehicle

0

In a breathtaking twist of events, a Florida mayor has found himself in hot water after being discovered driving a police vehicle and deploying its flashing blue lights to secure a VIP-like passage through traffic. This incident has raised eyebrows far beyond the sunshine state’s borders.

Recently unveiled body camera footage reveals the moment when Hialeah Mayor Bryan Calvo, age 28, is pulled over by a Miami police officer. The encounter occurred after Calvo allegedly executed an improper left turn in the upscale area of Coconut Grove, Miami, around 11:30 a.m. on June 14.

What appeared at first to be a routine traffic stop quickly became more serious when Officer Yasmani Gonzalez spotted that the black Chevrolet SUV Calvo was navigating was equipped with flashing red and blue police lights, a feature typically reserved for law enforcement vehicles.

The officer, his curiosity piqued, asked pointedly, “Is this a police car? Is this your personal?” The confrontation was captured in the footage, highlighting the striking nature of the scenario.

Calvo, unfazed, responded, “I’m an elected official,” noting that his role as mayor is non-partisan. This remark, however, did little to clarify why he had access to such a vehicle and the authority to use its emergency features.

The response did little to impress the officer.

‘You turned on your police lights,’ the officer told him. ‘That’s a criminal offense, and I can easily take you to jail.’

The tense roadside exchange continued as the officer delivered a reminder that holding an elected office position does not entitle him to lawless behavior.

‘I don’t care if you’re the mayor,’ Gonzalez slammed. ‘If you’re not a police officer, don’t activate police lights.’

The officer then warned Calvo that he was driving a police vehicle despite not being a sworn law enforcement officer.

Gonzalez proceeded to threaten jail time, saying, ‘that right there could be a third-degree felony.’

However rather than making an arrest, the officer issued Calvo two citations – one for the improper left turn and another for having prohibited emergency lights on the vehicle.

Court records show the mayor has pleaded not guilty to both violations. It also remains unclear whether Calvo is still driving the SUV.

The footage has also launched fresh questions over why the city’s mayor was driving a police-issued SUV equipped with functioning emergency lights.

Florida law generally limits the use of blue lights to authorized emergency vehicles and does not provide a specific exemption for mayors. Although municipalities may authorize rare vehicle assignments or equipment for operational purposes, local policies do not supersede state law.

Driving a city vehicle equipped with police-style equipment could be interpreted as the impersonation of a police officer, even if emergency lights were not activated and is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Persistently denying any wrongdoing, Calvo has insisted the SUV belonged to the Hialeah Police Department and that the emergency equipment had been installed long before he took office.

In a statement he penned, ‘One citation relates to a traffic maneuver and the second concerns equipment that was installed on a vehicle owned by and registered to the Hialeah Police Department, a vehicle that was refitted before I took office and before the vehicle was assigned to me.’

The blue lights incident was not Calvo’s first run-in with the law.

In July 2023, while serving as a Hialeah council member, Calvo was stopped by a Hialeah Police officer for allegedly failing to stop at a traffic signal while driving a red Tesla, according to Hialeah Police Department records.

The case bore a civil penalty of $277. However, Miami-Dade Clerk of Court records reveal the case was swiftly dropped at the request of the citing officer.

While the earlier citation did not involve allegations as serious as those raised during the June stop, the repeat run-in is likely to fuel mounting scrutiny over the driving conduct of one of South Florida’s highest-profile elected officials.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Miami Police Department and the City of Hialeah Mayor’s Office for comment.

She will play in her first Wimbledon semi-final, seven years after her debut at the London tennis tournament at the age of 15 when she beat Venus Williams in the legendary tennis upset.

Gauff will take on Czech Karolina Muchova, the 10th seed, who beat Elise Mertens earlier in the week.

Elsewhere on Thursday is the mixed doubles final, with the all-Australian pair of Marc Polmans and Storm Hunter facing El Salvador’s Marcelo Arevalo and Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko.
