The Hidden Stress of Success: Why High-Performers Fall Ill on Vacation

0

As the out-of-office response activates and the laptop finally closes, the eagerly anticipated vacation is set in motion.

However, this blissful escape can be disrupted by an all-too-familiar trio: a sore throat, a congested nose, and a relentless headache.

In a twist of fate, after weeks spent juggling demanding deadlines and unending tasks, some high achievers encounter illness just as they begin to unwind.

This phenomenon has been highlighted in a TikTok video by somatic instructor Liz Tenuto, who suggests that it’s common for “high-achieving women to catch a cold on the second day of every single vacation.”

Tenuto explains that chronic stress over extended periods keeps cortisol levels high, enabling women to persevere through fatigue. But once they finally pause to relax, their bodies appear to relent into a state of exhaustion.

The video struck a nerve.

“Literally happened to me every vacation since I was a child,” one user wrote.

“As a teacher, this happens EVERY extended break we have,” another commented. “I get so sick on the first/second day that I spend the whole week just recovering.”

“It is me. I am this woman. Happens on almost every single vacation!” another wrote.

Tenuto attributed the pattern to what’s often called the let-down effect — the idea that some people become ill shortly after a stressful period ends.

While the TikTok isn’t medical gospel, experts say it is pointing toward a real and biologically plausible phenomenon.

@theworkoutwitch

the let-down effect is when someone develops symptoms of illness, fatigue, pain, migraines, or emotional distress immediately after a period of prolonged stress ends 👇🏼 researchers have observed that people are more likely to get sick on vacation, on weekends, after major work deadlines, after caregiving crisises, or after big life events like moving or athletic competitions the science behind this is: during periods of sustained stress, the body’s stress-response systems help maintain performance and temporarily alter immune, inflammatory, and pain-processing functions but when the stressor ends, and the body shifts into recovery mode, symptoms that were previously suppressed or postponed become noticeable it’s not that relaxation or vacation makes you sick… it’s that relaxation finally gave your body permission to reveal how depleted it already was, which resulted in sickness the moment you slowed down do you want to lower your cortisol so your immune system can stabilize and you don’t get sick when you go on vacation? 👇🏼 “lower my cortisol” 🔗 on my profile 💖✌🏼💖 • • • #immunesystem #highacheiver #hyperindependent #stressed #stress

“The body does not always switch from high-output survival mode into rest mode smoothly,” Dr. Henry Legere, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Restore Hyper Wellness told The Post.

“For some people — especially high-responsibility, high-performing individuals — the first few days of vacation are when the bill for chronic stress finally comes due.”

That doesn’t necessarily mean relaxation itself causes illness.

Rather, Legere said prolonged stress can keep the body in a heightened fight-or-flight state, fueled by hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. During that time, sleep often suffers, the immune system shifts and many people simply unknowingly push through aches, fatigue and similar early stages of illness.

A middle-aged Hispanic woman, wearing a sunhat and seated on a sofa, coughs into her hand while packing a suitcase with summer clothes.

Legere says the transition from chronic stress to relaxation may help explain why some people notice headaches, fatigue or cold-like symptoms. Krakenimages.com – stock.adobe.com

“When stress abruptly drops, people may notice symptoms more, inflammatory pathways may rebound, migraines can be triggered, and latent viral or respiratory symptoms may become apparent,” he explained.

Scientists sometimes refer to this as leisure sickness, but Legere cautioned that neither leisure sickness nor the let-down effect is an official medical diagnosis. While intriguing, the research is also limited.

One small Dutch study published in 2002 found that roughly 3% of participants reported regularly becoming sick during weekends or vacations, with headaches, fatigue, muscles aches, nausea and cold-like symptoms among the most common complaints. Researchers observed that symptoms often appeared during the first few days off and suggested the transition from chronic work activation to relaxation could play a role.

Still, the study relied largely on self-reported experiences, with the authors themselves calling for more research.

So is getting sick the minute vacation begins all in your head? Not necessarily.

“It’s directionally credible, but likely overstated,” said Legere of the viral TikTok.

There also isn’t strong evidence that the phenomenon affects achieving women in particular. While that group may identify with the trend, Legere says anyone living under prolonged stress could potentially experience a similar rebound.

If there’s a silver lining, it’s that vacation doesn’t have to end with tissues and throat lozenges. Legere recommends easing into time off instead of treating vacation like an on-off switch.

That means gradually wrapping up major work projects instead of sprinting to the finish line, protecting sleep in the days leading up to travel and staying well hydrated before and during the trip.

He also advised limiting heavy drinking, keeping caffeine habits relatively consistent to avoid withdrawal headaches and fitting in light movement — such as walking or stretching — on travel days to help the body adjust.

Perhaps most importantly, resist the urge to pack every minute of vacation with activities. If possible, build in a decompression day.

“Treat vacation as recovery training rather than total collapse,” said Legere.

Unlock the Secret: Why Beetroot is the Ultimate Powerhouse for Weight Loss

0

Handling beetroot can sometimes transform your kitchen into a scene straight out of a detective novel, but the striking red vegetable packs a powerful punch.

Rich in vital vitamins, minerals, and nitrates, beetroot is associated with enhanced vascular health, improved athletic performance, and even a heightened libido.

Its brilliant hue comes from anti-inflammatory antioxidants that are praised for their ability to potentially enhance overall well-being.

Adding to its reputation, beetroot is a staple for actor Paul Rudd, who at 57, incredibly maintains the appearance of a man decades younger.

“Beetroot is a regular in my diet, not just for its potential to support exercise and healthy blood pressure, but also for its earthy taste and vibrant, fun color,” workplace wellness nutritionist Lily Soutter shared with the Daily Mail.

‘Enjoying beetroot is a great way to boost intake of fibre, folate, manganese and potassium.

‘Not only do I love adding beetroot to a simple salad, but I also add beetroot juice when making bread, pasta and even dips for a nutrient boost and a fun red/purple colour.’

With so many reasons to eat beetroot – and so many ways to add it to your diet – we take a closer look at the science behind its superfood claims.

Beetroots are packed with vital minerals including folate, Vitamin C and iron

Beetroots are packed with vital minerals including folate, Vitamin C and iron

Why are beetroots so good for you?

Beetroots are packed with essential minerals and vitamins, with a standard 80g serving delivering a huge 44 per cent of the NHS’ recommended intake of folate (also known as vitamin B9).

A serving of this size is equal to three small whole baby beetroots, seven slices of large beetroot or three heaped tablespoons of diced or grated beetroot. Alternatively, a 150ml glass of beetroot counts a single portion.

If eating pickled beetroots, pay attention to any additional salt and sugar used in the production process that could counteract its natural goodness.

‘Furthermore, pickled beetroot, which is preserved in vinegar, is not usually fermented and therefore won’t contain additional live bacteria,’ says Ms Soutter, who adds that looking for fermented beetroot products will provide live bacteria which may support gut health.

A same size serving also contains 13 per cent of the daily target of manganese, an essential trace mineral needed for bone and joint health.

They’re best known for being packed with nitrates, which are converted into nitric oxide in the blood. This compound relaxes and widens blood vessels, leading to lower blood pressure

Present in lesser – but not negligible amounts – is Vitamin C – a powerful antioxidant vital for a healthy immune system – plus potassium, magnesium and iron, which are all vital for cardiovascular health.

And, as if all that wasn’t reason enough to be adding beetroots to your daily rotation, they’re low in calories (34 per 80g serving) and relatively high in fibre.

However, they are quite high in carbohydrates, with 5.4g of their 7.7g carb load coming from natural sugars.

‘Enjoy beetroot with Vitamin C-rich foods, such as lemon juice or in a salad with orange slices, to enhance iron absorption,’ advises Ms Soutter.

Does beetroot lower blood pressure?

Multiple scientific studies have found a link between drinking beetroot juice and reduced blood pressure, and it all comes down to how the body utilises the root veg’s natural nitrates.

In a process that begins in the mouth, the nitrates are converted into nitric oxide, a compound that helps veins and arteries relax and widen, giving blood more space to move through them.

A 2018 review of 11 randomised controlled trials that looked at the effects of beetroot on blood pressure found that it had a particular influence on systolic blood pressure, the pressure of the blood against the arteries when the heart beats.

Its effect on the opposite measurement, diastolic blood pressure – which measures the pressure during the gaps between beats – was found to be less substantial.

Across the studies, the study authors noted that the overall evidence suggested that beetroot could have a beneficial effect on the blood pressure of both healthy people and those with raised cardiovascular risk, including pre-hypertension and hypertension.

‘When it comes to exercise performance and blood pressure, most studies have examined the effects of daily beetroot juice consumption,’ explains Ms Soutter.

‘For general health, whole beetroot can make a great addition to the diet a few times per week, and is an excellent way to boost our fibre, folate and potassium intake.’

Can beetroot boost virility?

The secret to a good sex life is a good vascular system, so it’s unsurprising that beetroots have become associated with virility.

‘Beetroot is a rich source of dietary nitrates, which convert to a substance called nitric oxide, which can dilate blood vessels and thereby improve blood flow,’ says Ms Soutter.

‘As good blood flow is important for erectile function, beetroot has been hypothesised to boost sex drive.

‘However, there is limited evidence to support this, and most of the positive research has focused on the benefits of nitrates in beetroot for lowering blood pressure whilst improving exercise endurance and sports performance.’

Are beetroots good for digestion?

Beetroot is a source of gut-friendly fibre, while some of its compounds, including pectin, act as prebiotics – essentially fuel for beneficial gut bacteria, helping them to flourish.

‘As our beneficial gut bacteria ferment these prebiotics, they produce short-chain fatty acids, which support the health of the gut lining,’ says Ms Soutter.

Eat beetroot with Vitamin C-rich foods to unlock its nutritional potential

Eat beetroot with Vitamin C-rich foods to unlock its nutritional potential

However, beetroot can be a double-edged sword for people with sensitive guts. It contains FODMAPs – types of fermentable carbohydrates that can be poorly absorbed in the small intestine and may trigger bloating, gas, stomach pain or changes in bowel habits in some people with irritable bowel syndrome.

Their red colour is their superpower

Beetroot is rich in two compounds that have attracted significant scientific interest – naturally occurring nitrates and betalains.

Betalains are the pigments responsible for beetroot’s distinctive deep red or purple colour, with some varieties producing yellow pigments instead.

‘Beetroot is a unique source of these phytonutrients,’ says Ms Soutter.

‘Research has shown that this plant pigment has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Antioxidants help protect our cells against free radical damage from UV rays, pollution, and smoke.’

Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage cells over time, contributing to inflammation and ageing. By helping to neutralise them, antioxidants such as betalains are thought to support overall health and may help protect against chronic disease, although more research is needed to fully understand their long-term effects.

Beetroots can interact with medications

People taking drugs for high blood pressure, heart failure and kidney disease need to be wary about eating large amounts of beetroot or any concentrated supplements.

This is because the nitrates in the veggies can cause a ‘double drop’ in blood pressure, leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting or, in more serious cases, a dangerously low blood pressure episode.

For the same reason, people who already have low blood pressure should also avoid concentrated beetroot supplements.

And for people with chronic kidney disease, particularly stages 3 to 5, it’s important to be cautious because beetroot is relatively high in potassium, which can contribute to harmful electrolyte imbalances.

And, because beetroot is high in oxalates, it could trigger issues with people who suffer with calcium oxalate kidney stones.

Exploring the Complex Legacy of ‘Little House on the Prairie’: An American Classic Revisited

Each person has a distinct connection with Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie. Some view the book series as a timeless tribute to the adventurous American spirit, while others criticize it for its perceived insensitivity toward indigenous peoples displaced by settlers like the Ingalls. For many Generation X individuals raised on the classic television adaptation, the tale evokes the comforting presence of Michael Landon’s portrayal of Pa and a sense of nostalgia for simpler times.

Personally, I was captivated by Ingalls Wilder’s novels during my elementary years, a period marked by schoolyard challenges and the sudden loss of my father, which plunged our family into financial hardship. Laura Ingalls, encountered through my well-thumbed paperbacks, was perhaps the only fictional companion who understood my daily struggles with life’s fragility. Her narratives offered me solace, a testament that if Laura could endure, so could I.

Therefore, when audiences stream Netflix’s new rendition of Little House on the Prairie, they will inevitably carry their preconceived notions into the experience. Already, commentators from the right critique it for being overly progressive, while those from the left fault it for being too lenient on the Ingalls’ narrative. For me, recalling how the novels were a vital lifeline during my difficult times, Netflix’s adaptation beautifully captures the series’s complex legacy. It serves as a charming family drama that will either captivate hearts with its tenderness or frustrate those seeking their own ideal version of Little House.

Developed by Rebecca Sonnenshine, the Netflix series Little House on the Prairie bypasses many events from Little House in the Big Woods to chronicle young Laura Ingalls (Alice Halsey) as her family moves to a new homestead in Kansas. While Laura perceives their perilous journey, including crossing rivers and camping in the wild, as an exciting adventure, her more refined sister Mary (Skywalker Hughes) longs for the safety of their former home. Although “Ma” (Crosby Fitzgerald) and “Pa” (Luke Bracey) remain optimistic for their children, it is evident that Caroline empathizes with Mary’s reservations, whereas Charles views this new journey as an escape from past mistakes.

Australian actor Luke Bracey, known for his roles as rugged heartthrobs, skillfully navigates his portrayal of Charles Ingalls, balancing the admired image Laura holds of him with the reality of the flawed man loved by his wife Caroline. Alice Halsey embodies the role of Laura with sincerity, showing her as a brave and precocious young heroine. Young viewers, regardless of gender, will likely aspire to emulate her, and adults will find themselves charmed, much like Warren Christie’s Mr. Edwards is.

The Ingalls sitting in front of a gorgeous sunset in 'Little House on the Prairie'

Photo: Netflix

My favorite thing about Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie is how gosh darn gorgeous its scenery is. Episode 1 director Sarah Adina Smith (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Lessons In Chemistry) turns the flat landscape and sprawling sky into a vast canvas that only highlights how small, and exposed, the Ingalls family are compared to their dreams of building a future on their own terms. The natural light gives everything an amber-tinted haze, like a faded photograph or a favorite memory gilt with nostalgia.

If the visual language of Little House on the Prairie captures author Laura Ingalls Wilder’s rose-colored view of the events of her childhood, then the show’s approach to adapting the books fills some of the gaps between fact and fiction. The idea that the Ingalls are actually illegally living on Osage land comes as a stark surprise towards the end of Ingalls Wilder’s novel; in this version, Charles Ingalls discovers this much earlier, to his earnest horror. It fuels a key source of tension throughout the season. Even if Laura looks at her indigenous neighbors with genuine kindness and curiosity, her family — and the rest of the mostly white settlers — are clued into the legal, moral, and existential quandary that their fledgling town of Independence’s very existence provokes. Do any of these pioneers really deserve to be there? And what are they willing to do to stay?

Mary (Skywalker Hughes), Pa (Luke Bracey), and Laura (Alice Halsey) in 'Little House on the Prairie'

For some, the sheer acknowledgement of this bitter historic reality will feel blasphemous to their sacred memories of the books, and for others, it will feel like the show is trying to brush over the novels’ more hideous moments without honestly interrogating them. Again, what you make of Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie will largely depend on what you bring to it. When I read the books, I clung to Laura’s emotional journey, first and foremost. I marveled at Ingalls Wilder’s descriptions of life on the prairie — the enchanting wildlife, vast vistas, and quirky characters — while recognizing that her worldview was that of a child on the frontlines of a fraught moment in United States history. Netflix’s adaption captures the sheer wonder I felt reading these books, but refracts it through a modern lens.

Little House on the Prairie is an addictive family drama full of stunning visuals, sweet storylines, and a vivid sense of realism. It’s also a loving adaptation of books that mean a lot — good, bad, and in between — to people. Netflix’s Little House might not feel like your Little House, but it sure felt an awful lot like Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House to me.

Little House on the Prairie is now streaming on Netflix.

*Don’t worry, hard core book fans, the show doesn’t forget the existence of baby Carrie or even the brilliant stories from Big Woods! Sonnenshine simply uses memories of the “house in the big woods” to explain the family’s move as well as their individual hopes, dreams, regrets, and apprehensions.

Press Conference Scheduled Today for Updates on Javeayah Harris Homicide Investigation

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. () – The case of missing child, Javeayah Harris, has captivated the community since her disappearance on Tuesday, June 30th, 2026.

Authorities from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office initiated their search for the 4-year-old in the vicinity of Hillsboro Street and Ridgecrest Road. They described Javeayah as wearing pink Minnie Mouse pajamas and Crocs, with braids adorned with pink beads, and urged residents to be vigilant.

By 11 a.m. on July 1st, the search efforts were amplified with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and various other agencies actively joining in the mission to find Javeayah.

On July 2nd, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office tackled public concerns regarding the absence of an Amber Alert and the need for community assistance in the search. They explained that an Amber Alert wasn’t issued as the criteria were not met and emphasized the importance of trained personnel handling the situation to prevent errors. By then, a vast 3000 acres had been searched. That afternoon, they held the inaugural press conference, outlining ways the community could provide information and urging people to share Javeayah’s image widely.

As the search stretched beyond 48 hours by July 3rd, authorities reported no evidence indicating that Javeayah had been abducted and suggested she might have wandered off independently. The search, concentrated around Reynolds Pond Road where she was last seen, involved hundreds of officers and first responders covering 5000 acres. By Friday night, these efforts were scaled back.

On July 4th, Sheriff Marty Sawyer held another press conference with news nobody wanted to hear.

I am deeply saddened to tell you our investigation and evidence leads us to believe 4-year-old Javeayah Harris is deceased. It is the outcome that we all feared and sadly, it is now what we face and we will face it together as a community.

According to Sheriff Sawyer, Javeayah Harris’ parents, Johmarea Harris, 23, and Michilae Herring, 22, were arrested and charged with Homicide by Child Abuse with Herring having an additional charge of Filing a False Police Report. Sheriff Sawyer stated that the 4-year-old was believed to have been dead for about a month.

The following day, Sunday, July 5th, bond was denied for the parents. Both Herring and Harris appeared at the hearings without an attorney. The community mourned the death of the little girl, even though most people didn’t even know her. A vigil was held in the The Alley Sunday night to show love, support and to honor Jeveayah.

While the parents have been arrested for Homicide in this case, the child’s body has not been found. On July 6th, Javeayah Harris’ mother reportedly admitted that she disposed of her body in another location, that was not released to the media. ACSO also released the 911 call that began this entire ordeal.

Tuesday, July 7th brought investigators back to search the Javeayah’s home and the wooded area around it. No information was released on what, if anything, was found there. Law enforcement left the home around 9 pm that night.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office announced on Wednesday, July 8th that another press conference would be held Thursday. The agency is expected to provide the latest in the investigation. It will be held at 10:30am and will be live streamed on our website, wjbf.com and on our Facebook page.

(TODAY) Thursday, July 9th, NewsChannel 6 will have a podcast beginning at 10:15 on 6+ leading up to the press conference. You can join Good Morning Augusta Anchor Mary Morrison and NewsChannel 6 Executive Producer Danielle Casalie as they discuss the case.

Another vigil will be held in Aiken this evening, July 9th, in honor of Javeayah Harris. The community is welcome to come to The Event Center on Shiloh Heights Road at 7:30.

Local Talent Drives Success and Joy for EIU Baseball Team

In Lafayette, Indiana, the atmosphere was electric at the 2026 Prospect League All-Star game, and a key figure soaking in the excitement was Nolan Decker. The scene was especially joyful for Decker, who had every reason to smile wide.

Enjoying a summer filled with baseball in his home state, Decker stood out at the All-Star game, matching his number of appearances there with those made for the Eastern Illinois University Panthers throughout the 2026 season. As a rising redshirt sophomore at EIU, the chance to play at such a prominent event was a significant milestone.

But it wasn’t just his summer accomplishments that brightened Decker’s expression. Conversations about the past spring at Charleston seemed to add to his excitement.

“Absolutely awesome,” Decker recalled, reflecting on his 2026 season with EIU. “Very thrilling, to say the least,” he mused, capturing his enthusiasm for the Panthers’ remarkable run that year.

During the 2026 summer, Decker is competing with the Kokomo CreekChubs, but his heart remains with the memories from the spring when EIU won an impressive 33 games. Transferring from Troy to Eastern Illinois did more than just amplify his skills—it reunited him with his childhood best friend, Bryce Riggs, making the season all the more special.

“[He] absolutely dominated this year,” Decker said of his longtime friend, who was named the 2026 OVC Pitcher of the Year.

The duo, both from Noblesville, Ind., plans to become roommates for the 2026-27 school year and both continue with the Panthers’ baseball program.

“Just seeing him on the mound dominating, being able to have the laughs but compete as well has been a blessing,” Decker said.

He says the summer in the Prospect League has helped him get valuable experience while gaining confidence.

EIU will have a new pitching coach in 2027, as Jake Lotz takes over after spending the previous three years at DII Lewis University.

Manhattan Developer Downplays Collapse Concerns, Labels Buckling Columns an ‘Isolated Incident

0

The developer responsible for a Manhattan skyscraper, which triggered concerns of a collapse due to bent columns that led to evacuations, is downplaying the fears. They describe the structural damage as a “localized situation” and assert that it never endangered the building’s stability.

MetroLoft said in a statement obtained by NBC 4 New York on Wednesday that the developer worked closely with New York City’s Department of Buildings to confirm the building “is now stable,” and that it has “a clear plan to fix” the issue.

“This is a localized situation affecting less than 30 apartments out of over 1,600. At no time was the building or any portion of it at risk of collapse,” the statement explained.

On Tuesday, emergency personnel identified two bent support columns and sagging floors within the 37-story building. This discovery led to the evacuation of construction workers and residents from nine surrounding buildings.

Nathan Berman, the founder of MetroLoft, addressed the situation in an interview with the real estate publication The Real Deal, stating that the collapse fears had been “blown a little bit out of proportion.”

“This is a 1.3 million-square-foot project with an issue at the building’s northwest corner,” Berman told the publication, noting that the building has a “huge base that is as stable as anything in the city.” He said the damage was limited to a roughly 20-by-20-foot section of the building and described the problem as “very fixable.”

Fire officials initially warned of an “extremely dangerous situation” after finding the damaged columns on the 21st floor, though they said the primary concern was “a localized collapse” rather than the failure of the entire 37-story structure.

After emergency crews worked overnight to stabilize the building, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said no additional movement had been detected but vowed to make a full investigation into what caused the situation.

Berman said the damage likely occurred because added weight from the ongoing office-to-residential conversion overloaded two columns, calling it a “freak accident” involving supports that may not have been reinforced sufficiently or may have contained an undetected defect.

“That’s it. There’s no mystery, and there’s no magic,” he said.

He rejected claims from a union official that the project lacked enough structural steel, calling the allegation “total nonsense” and insisting the work had been designed and approved by structural engineers.

The project is converting the former Pfizer headquarters near Grand Central Terminal into roughly 1,600 apartments in what is billed as the largest office-to-residential conversion in New York City history.

Berman said replacing the damaged columns and raising the sagging floors should keep the project on track for its planned 2027 completion.

Opposition leader Angus Taylor has defended Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson following her decision to test the triple zero emergency service during a Telstra outage on Wednesday.

Sarah Henderson, who serves as the Opposition’s communications spokesperson, attempted two calls to the emergency services number during widespread disruptions caused by the outage. The incident had thrown the entire country into disarray.

Under Australian law, making false calls to triple zero can lead to a maximum penalty of three years in prison. Henderson’s actions have drawn criticism from the Labor party, labeling the calls as irresponsible.

Australia’s leading telecom provider, Telstra, continued to face connectivity issues into the following day. These problems were exacerbated by a separate incident that made it difficult for some users to reach triple zero.

Although Telstra managed to resolve major issues by mid-morning on Wednesday, residual effects lingered, with several transport networks remaining slow or completely stalled into Thursday.

Early on Thursday morning, the company said overnight work had reduced the separate triple zero error by about 90 per cent. On Thursday afternoon, it said it had “implemented a solution” that had addressed the issue, and customers could feel confident calling triple zero.

‘Doing her job’

Taylor argued on Thursday that Henderson was doing her job as Coalition communications spokesperson and that her actions were not illegal.

“If [Communications Minister Anika Wells] hadn’t been absent for seven hours, Sarah wouldn’t have had to do these things,” Taylor said.

“These actions were not illegal and they were made necessary by complete and utter failure from this minister and that should be the focus of the press, and it should be the focus of the nation.”

The senator insisted she was within her rights to make the test calls on Thursday morning.

“I was simply, as the shadow minister for communications, making those initial calls to work out whether the … system was actually operating,” she told Sydney radio station 2GB.

“I accept the criticism, but what I will say is that I am in a unique position holding this government to account.”

Industry Minister Tim Ayres said making the calls at a time when the emergency phone network was being impacted was reckless.

“I was absolutely shocked by that revelation. I just say to Australians, don’t do what she did,” he told ABC radio.

“It’s utterly irresponsible. I just don’t know why anybody would do that, but I’d certainly say nobody should follow her example.”

Political ‘point scoring’

Telstra’s chief financial officer Michael Ackland said on Thursday that Telstra had completed more than 630 welfare checks during the outage for people who had called triple zero but failed to be connected.

Ackland said 230 had reported via SMS that they did not require a further response, 402 required follow-up calls and 170 of those were passed on to police.

Opposition regional communications spokesperson Anne Webster defended Henderson’s conduct, saying the test calls were necessary.

“She’s the shadow minister, she needs to know whether it works or doesn’t work … I would have thought that it was reasonable,” she told ABC radio on Thursday.

“People want to know. I mean, we’re a curious set of beings, aren’t we?”

Opposition defence spokesman James Paterson described the criticism levelled at Henderson as an attempt at point-scoring.

“This is an absolutely desperate attempt from the government to try and distract from their own failures,” he told Sky News.

“I understand why she did what she did. It’s certainly not an offence, and if the government was serious, they would have to put up or shut up here.”

The communications regulator is opening an investigation into Wednesday’s network outage, which experts have said exposed just how reliant critical infrastructure is on a handful of providers.

It is the third major national outage in less than a year for the $56 billion giant, which powers about 25 million Australian mobile services.

Kate Bush Earns £8 Million as ‘Running Up That Hill’ Tops the Charts

In a remarkable turn of events, Kate Bush generated a stunning £8 million from her 1985 hit “Running Up That Hill” after it soared to the top of the charts last year, a full 37 years following its original release.

This resurgence in popularity occurred after the song featured prominently in the fourth season of the Netflix supernatural series “Stranger Things,” catapulting it to number one in the UK and rekindling its international success.

Originally crafted by Bush for her renowned “Hounds of Love” album, the track also climbed to the top of the Australian charts and reached the number one spot on the iTunes chart in the US, indicating its widespread appeal across generations.

This resurgence in interest allowed Kate to triple her net worth, while simultaneously helping the song smash three Guinness World Records, underscoring its timeless allure and impact.

Bush achieved the distinction of being the oldest female artist to secure a Number One position in the UK’s Official Singles Chart. Furthermore, her song broke records for having the longest duration to reach Number One and the longest gap between Number One rankings on the UK’s Official Singles Chart.

She achieved a UK number one with her debut single Wuthering Heights in 1978, meaning there was a 44-year gap between to chart toppers.

Running Up That Hill reached number three in the charts when it was first released in 1985.

Kate’s company Noble & Brite Ltd brought in on £8.8million in 2022 and, even after £2.5m was paid to creditors, £6m was kept in net assets.

Her total equity tripled from £2m in May 2022 to £6.3m in May this year.

She paid more than £2.4m out in tax, according to her accounts filed with Companies House.

In the show, Running Up That Hill was grieving teen Max Mayfield’s (Sadie Sink) favourite song, and it unexpectedly saved her life in episode four.

The song reached the top of the UK charts in June last year after it appeared in the popular Netflix science fiction series and went viral on TikTok.

It was also the first time Kate had a number one in Australia since 1978, when her debut single Wuthering Heights claimed the top spot.

The singer-songwriter told BBC Radio 4’s Women’s Hour last year of the renewed interest in her music: ‘It’s so exciting, it’s quite shocking really, isn’t it?

‘The whole world’s gone mad!’

She added: ‘The thought of all these really young people hearing the song for the first time and discovering it is, well, I think it’s very special.’

The songstress also admitted that she hadn’t listened to her track in quite a while as she doesn’t tend to replay her ‘old stuff’.

Bonnie Tyler expressed excitement about being in good health to perform shortly before she was admitted to the hospital and tragically passed away.

“I’m in good health at the moment, knock on wood, and I’m thoroughly enjoying my time on stage,” she said to Hello! in an interview published in March.

“I continue to rock out on stage with my wonderful band, and when you have your health, you truly have everything,” the “Total Eclipse of the Heart” performer remarked.

Tyler mentioned her fitness routine involves practicing Pilates for “20 minutes a day,” even if she’s just in her hotel room.

She also disclosed that she had surgery to address some issues she had been experiencing with her knees.

“I have had problems with my knees; I didn’t have new knees, I had what they call washouts [a surgical knee procedure], which turned out to be very successful,” she told the outlet.

“So, hopefully that will last for a long time,” Tyler added.

The “Holding Out for a Hero” songstress’s interview came five months before she died on July 8. Tyler was 75.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in [a] hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” a spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday.

“We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy,” they added.

In April, Tyler was hospitalized after she began experiencing intense abdominal pain.

The “If I Sing You a Love Song” songstress had a serious tear in her bowel and had to undergo emergency surgery.

The following month, Tyler was placed in a medically induced coma after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal.

In June, her team revealed that she was out of the coma but said the “recovery process is slow.”

At the time, all of Tyler’s planned concerts had been canceled through August and her management released a statement thanking fans around the world for their “tremendous sympathy and support.”

Tyler is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert Sullivan.
