Engineers Begin Stabilization on NYC Building as Buckled Columns Prompt Safety Concerns

MANHATTAN, N.Y. (WPIX) – New York City officials have expressed confidence in the stabilization efforts addressing a high-rise on the verge of collapse, which caused a flurry of activity in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday.

The incident resulted in extended street closures, disrupted transit schedules, and necessitated the evacuation of several buildings, including Nexstar’s WPIX headquarters. However, according to a Tuesday night update from the Department of Buildings, emergency supports seem to be effectively stabilizing the situation.

The high-rise, situated on 42nd Street between Second and Third Avenues, is undergoing transformation into 1,600 residential units. It previously served as a facility for Pfizer.

City leaders in New York say they are confident in ongoing stabilization efforts at the buckling high-rise that sparked chaos across Midtown Manhattan. (WPIX)

The chaos started around 8 a.m. on Tuesday when the New York City Fire Department was alerted to falling bricks from the structure.

Workers at the construction site reported to authorities that two support columns had given way on the building’s 21st floor.

As officials worked to clear the area, road closures and evacuations grew by the hour until a wide frozen zone was established, with 40th to 45th streets shut down from First to Third Avenues.

At a news conference on Tuesday, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the building was unstable and shifting, calling it “an extremely serious situation.”

Crews examined the building floor by floor, finding no additional movement of the damaged columns and giving workers the green light to begin emergency repairs.

“We had columns that could not hold the weight before, so we came in with metal beams and poles and galvanized steel in order to replace those columns and hold up the weight,” said Ahmed Tigani, the commissioner for the Department of Buildings.

“The two most important things right now are making it stable and safe for the people working inside and for the people who are nearby, and then looking to figure out what the right intervention is for the long-term stability of the building.”

The city had lifted some evacuations and road closures Wednesday as the stabilization work and investigation continue.

Trump Threatens Swift Action Against Iran Amid Soaring Oil Prices

0

Donald Trump has declared the nuclear agreement with Iran null and void following an incident where Iranian forces allegedly fired upon oil tankers in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz. He further mentioned that additional American military actions are scheduled for later tonight.

“In my view, the deal is finished. I have no intention of negotiating with them any longer,” Trump stated while attending a session at the NATO summit held in Turkey on Wednesday.

He criticized Iranian leaders sharply, labeling them as “scum” and “sick individuals,” asserting that they are governed by malicious and aggressive people.

The US Central Command announced that they have targeted over 80 locations in retaliation for the firing upon the tankers. In response, Iran launched attacks aiming at sites in Bahrain and Kuwait.

Later, Trump emphasized the end of any truce, indicating plans are underway for a new series of strikes against Iranian targets as Wednesday evening approaches.

‘We hit them very hard last night … probably hit them hard again tonight. I’ll give a little warning, we’re going to hit them hard tonight,’ the President said. The President added that he’s considering reinstating the blockade on Iran.

Oil prices surged overnight with global benchmark Brent crude hitting $78.39 per barrel – its highest price since June 19.

All three major US stock market indexes ticked down after Trump declared the MOU was over. Futures for the NASDAQ, Dow Jones and S&P 500 were all down roughly a point on Wednesday pre-market.

But Trump said his negotiators still believed that a peace agreement could be salvaged.

‘I’ll speak to our negotiators. They want to negotiate, they’re good people… but they have to come back to me,’ the President said. As for the Iranians, Trump added, ‘As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time dealing with them.’

CENTCOM said on Wednesday: ‘Forces completed a new round of offensive strikes against Iran, July 7, hitting over 80 targets with precision munitions as an immediate response to Iran’s latest attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

‘US forces struck Iranian air defense systems, command and control networks, coastal radar sites, anti-ship missile capabilities, and more than 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps small boats in and near the strait.’

The US identified the targeted vessels as: Marshall Islands-flagged M/T Al Rekayyat, Saudi Arabia-flagged M/T Wedyan, and Liberian-flagged M/T Cyprus Prosperity.

‘As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time dealing with them. They’re liars,’ Trump said. ‘They’re cuckoo.’

The President said that he initially believed Iran would be peaceful during this week as the country is taking six days to mourn the death of their late leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed by joint US-Israeli strikes on February 28.

‘We said, ‘Go and do your funeral stuff,’ and instead of that, they start shooting rockets at ships,’ Trump remarked.

‘Can you imagine they start shooting bombs, actually missiles at ships yesterday, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, couple of others,’ he added.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who was sitting next to Trump as he went off on Iran’s leadership, offered support for the latest round of strikes.

‘I think what you did last night was absolutely necessary,’ Rutte told Trump. ‘It was a very strong response.’

Rutte has been working to mend the relationship between the White House and NATO following Trump’s repeated remarks about how the military alliance did not support US military forces in the early days of the war.

The NATO leader told Trump that there were only ‘isolated cases’ of allied nations not wanting to offer their support to the US.

‘I would say these are isolated cases,’ Rutte said, adding that 5,000 planes took off from European airports in support of Operation Epic Fury.’

‘Europe [is] one big platform of power projection for the United States,’ Rutte added.

Alleged Gunfire Erupts at Woman’s Home Amidst Husband’s TikTok Affair Scandal

A couple from New York is facing serious allegations after allegedly traveling to Florida and opening fire at the residence of a woman who was involved in an affair with the husband.

Angelo Portelli, 41, and his wife, Natalie Lopez-Portelli, 53, have been charged with multiple offenses including four counts of attempted second-degree murder and battery by strangulation. These charges are linked to an incident in December 2025 involving Jessica Rodriguez and her new partner, as stated in court records obtained by Oxygen.

Jessica revealed to the authorities that her casual relationship with Angelo began after they connected on TikTok, according to an arrest affidavit reviewed by Oxygen. Angelo, who purportedly told Jessica he was in the process of a divorce, had traveled to Florida four times. The relationship ended when Natalie reached out to Jessica in October 2025 to inform her that the couple was actually not divorcing and that Angelo had misled her.

Following the breakup, Jessica began a new relationship with Eugenio Santiago, an officer with the Orlando Police Department’s community service division. He moved in with her and her two children, as detailed in court documents.

Unable to let go, Angelo and Natalie allegedly showed up at Jessica’s home on December 6, according to the affidavit. They reportedly rang the doorbell, claiming to have noticed damage to the rear window of Eugenio’s patrol car.

Though Jessica answered the door, she told authorities that Angelo was wearing a hoodie and face mask and she didn’t recognize him. Natalie also tried to disguise her appearance by wearing a blonde wig, authorities said.

While Eugenio was out checking on the vehicle, Angelo was allegedly seen in surveillance footage approaching him from behind and putting him in what looked like a choke hold.

“As the altercation continued,” authorities noted in the affidavit, “the video showed both Eugenio and Angelo fall to the ground.”

Eugenio can be heard yelling for help as Natalie approached the front door to talk with Jessica. As the scuffle continued, authorities said Eugenio called for Jessica to get his gun.

After breaking free from Angelo, he walked back toward the house and retrieved a weapon, while Angelo raised his own firearm, according to the court records.

Someone in the video yelled “put it down” before gunfire erupted—although authorities said it was unclear who fired the first shot. Eugenio later told investigators that Angelo fired first, per the court records.

“As Angelo ran towards his car, multiple gunshots and muzzle flashes were observed from Angelo’s handgun,” authorities wrote in the affidavit. “Both Natalie and Angelo were then seen running back towards their vehicle and fleeing the area at a high rate of speed.”

The gunfire allegedly did extensive damage to Eugenio’s patrol car, Jessica’s vehicle and the home, authorities said.

Phone records later recovered by investigators allegedly placed both Angelo and Natalie at the scene at the time of the shooting, according to the affidavit.

Angelo—who worked as a customs/border patrol agent at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York—also allegedly confessed to a coworker to being in Florida at the time of the shooting.

The coworker told investigators that when asked about the trip, Angelo began to cry and said Natalie had wanted to see the home of the woman he’d had an affair with while they were in Florida visiting his father, per the affidavit. According to his account, while at the house, he noticed the damaged car window.

“Angelo said because he was a was a fellow law enforcement officer,” authorities wrote in the affidavit, “he decided to go to the house and inform whoever was inside that the window was broken.”

Angelo allegedly told his coworker that he  had words with the man who answered the door and claimed the man had fired two shots first, before he returned fire, per the court records.

However, investigators said in the affidavit that his account “contradicted what really happened according to the surveillance footage of the incident.”

Angelo allegedly turned over a Glock 19 handgun that authorities said was found to match the evidence left at the scene, according to to the court records.

Investigators argued that the couple’s alleged actions that day were carried out maliciously and could have resulted in the death of Eugenio, Jessica or her two children.

“The act was imminently dangerous to another and demonstrated a depraved mind without regard for human life,” they wrote in the affidavit. “The overt act went beyond mere preparation.”

The couple—who are currently being held at Florida’s Orange County Department of Corrections—are slated to appear in court for a hearing July 9 on the charges against them, per court records.

It’s not clear whether either has retained an attorney. reached out the public defender’s office, who declined to comment.

The Impactful Demise of Magneto in X-Men ’97’s Season 2: Episode 4

Warning: Spoilers ahead for “X-Men ’97” Season 2, Episode 4 — “Rise of Apocalypse – Part II”

The animated series “X-Men ’97” has shown that its emotional punches can rival even the most shocking moments of “Game of Thrones.” In the gripping fourth episode of Season 2, titled “Rise of Apocalypse – Part II,” the series might have surpassed the heartbreak of Gambit’s demise from the previous season. This time, it is Magneto, long-time adversary and uneasy ally of Professor Charles Xavier, who meets a tragic end.

The X-Men, displaced throughout different eras, each battle Apocalypse by whatever means possible. In a mission set in Ancient Egypt, Professor X and Magneto lead a team hoping to prevent the transformation of the mutant En Sabah Nur into the fearsome Apocalypse. However, destiny proves unalterable as Nur fully embraces his fate to become the tyrant.

Once Apocalypse rises, he sets out to obliterate the city, but Magneto steps in to safeguard the innocents with his powers. The cost of this heroic act leaves Magneto drained and defenseless, allowing Apocalypse to claim his life in the harsh desert. The moment is made even more poignant as Professor Xavier, powerless to intervene, can only mourn his fallen friend as Apocalypse delivers the fatal blow.

Don’t count Magneto out just yet

In the realm of comics, death seldom equates to a permanent farewell, shifting as easily as the latest trend. An example lies in Morph from “X-Men: The Animated Series,” who is believed dead in the first season, only to make a surprising return later. While Morph’s storyline differs from Magneto’s apparent demise in “Rise of Apocalypse – Part II,” the episodic narrative hints that this might not be the last we see of Magneto.

In “X-Men ’97,” the Children of the Atom were spread across the timeline in an attempt to stop Apocalypse. With all the time-travel jumps taking place, there’s nothing stopping them from going back to the moment before Magneto’s death and changing it. After all, the entire premise of “Days of Future Past” involves Bishop going back in time to stop an event from happening. While his future doesn’t change — and what’s becoming clear in the story is that fate can’t be changed — certain events are averted.

At the same time, maybe it’s best that Magneto doesn’t come back. While he’s teetered between villain and hero many times before, his redemption arc is complete after he’s prepared to sacrifice himself for a city and its inhabitants to survive. In terms of character development, where else can Magneto’s story go?

Ex-Wisconsin Judge Faces Sentencing After Conviction for Obstructing Mexican Immigrant’s Arrest

0

Hannah Dugan, a former judge from Wisconsin, faces sentencing in federal court this Wednesday after being found guilty of felony obstruction. Her case, which involved assisting a Mexican immigrant in eluding federal officers, became a notable point in the broader immigration crackdown carried out during former President Donald Trump’s administration.

Dugan, aged 67, was convicted by a jury on December 19 and now risks up to five years behind bars. Following the conviction, she resigned from her role as a Milwaukee County circuit judge two weeks later, in the shadow of impeachment threats from Republican state legislators. Her judicial career spanned nine years.

Trump administration tried to make an example out of Milwaukee judge

The case against Dugan was initiated by the Trump administration amid an intensified strategy by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain immigrants attending court hearings nationwide. Republicans have criticized Dugan as an activist judge, while her legal team argued that the administration aimed to “crush her” to enforce strict compliance with its immigration policies.

In response to Dugan’s conviction, Republican U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany, a staunch Trump supporter and gubernatorial candidate for Wisconsin, took to social media, calling for her imprisonment.

Ahead of the sentencing, Dugan’s legal representatives have chosen not to issue any comments. Although she refrained from testifying during her trial, they revealed that she will address the court on Wednesday, marking her first public statement concerning the case in over a year.

Prosecutors push for ‘serious sentence’

Dugan’s attorneys argued that as a judge she was immune from prosecution. U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman, who will hand down the sentence, has rejected attempts by Dugan to vacate her obstruction conviction.

Prosecutors argued in a sentencing memo filed last week that Dugan violated her oath as a judge and put both law enforcement and the public at risk.

“Judges are entrusted with tremendous discretion, but there is a line they cannot cross,” Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Frohling wrote. “The defendant crossed that line.”

Dugan’s attorneys argued she has been “punished enough,” including resigning as a judge and facing threats of violence. They argued in her sentencing memo that she should not be sentenced to any jail time besides the part of one day she already spent in federal custody.

Under federal sentencing guidelines, the presentence report calls for 15 to 21 months behind bars. The judge is not bound by those guidelines.

Prosecutors said the average sentence for obstruction cases is 16 months, but they did not recommend a sentence.

“This was a serious offense, and it warrants a correspondingly serious sentence,” Frohling wrote.

No matter what she is sentenced to, Dugan’s attorneys said they plan to file an appeal.

Dugan’s case was a first for Wisconsin

Dugan’s case marked the first time that a state judge in Wisconsin went to trial on charges of obstructing immigration agents. While convicting her of the felony obstruction charge, jurors found her not guilty of concealing an individual to prevent arrest, a misdemeanor.

On April 18, 2025, immigration officers went to the Milwaukee County courthouse after learning 31-year-old Eduardo Flores-Ruiz had reentered the country illegally and was scheduled to appear before Dugan for a hearing in a state battery case.

Dugan confronted agents outside her courtroom and directed them to the chief judge’s office because she told them their administrative warrant wasn’t sufficient grounds to arrest Flores-Ruiz.

After the agents left, she led Flores-Ruiz and his attorney out a private jury door. Agents spotted Flores-Ruiz in the corridor, followed him outside and arrested him after a foot chase. A week later, FBI agents arrested Dugan in the courthouse, leading her outside in handcuffs.

Flores-Ruiz was deported in November.

South Carolina Block Party Chaos: Mob Assaults Officers with Machine Gun and Spear

0

A tumultuous Fourth of July block party in North Charleston, South Carolina spiraled into havoc when gunfire erupted, involving a machine gun and even a spear, culminating in an altercation with police officers. This chaos has now led to charges being filed against six individuals, which includes four juveniles, as disclosed by authorities.

Announcing these developments, the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) revealed the charges against six people, identifying two adults implicated in the incident on July 4 within the Chicora-Cherokee community.

The charges against the juveniles are serious, with accusations including third-degree assault by mob, assaulting a police officer while resisting arrest, resisting arrest itself, possession of a machine gun, and breach of peace.

Due to their status as juveniles, the police have not released the identities of the young individuals involved.

Authorities also arrested 19-year-old Giovanni Mekhi Sincere Campbell, of North Charleston, who is charged with possession of a machine gun, and 18-year-old Sa’Mya Adriana Collette Weaver, who is charged with breach of peace and assault on a police officer while resisting arrest.

Police said the investigation remains active, and additional arrests and charges are possible.

The confrontation unfolded after officers responded to a city-permitted neighborhood block party in the Chicora-Cherokee community at about 8:30 p.m. on July 4.

Earlier that day, police leadership met with event organizers to discuss traffic and parking plans to ensure emergency vehicles could safely access the area if needed.

Officers initially received reports of people firing fireworks toward passing vehicles before learning that several attendees had begun discharging firearms, according to police.

Authorities said officers repeatedly announced that the event had ended and instructed attendees to leave in an effort to de-escalate the situation.

Despite those efforts, multiple fights broke out and additional gunshots were fired, prompting officers to exit their patrol vehicles to separate those involved and restore order.

During the response, officers recovered multiple firearms, including what investigators described as a machine gun, as well as a makeshift spear.

Police said multiple officers were assaulted during the incident, with two female officers suffering minor injuries. Following the incident, the department said, “Attacks on law enforcement are unacceptable and those responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Viral video from the scene shows a female officer attempting to detain a woman when several people rush in, pull the officer to the ground and begin striking her.

Authorities said no civilians reported injuries.

The North Charleston Police Department thanked members of the community who assisted officers during the violence, as well as responding agencies including the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Charleston Police Department, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Investigators continue to examine the shootings and other criminal activity connected to the incident.

Taylor Swift Wedding Drama: Guest Uncovers ‘Scam’ Invitation in NYC Misadventure

0

A touch of luxury dilemmas.

British broadcaster Greg James was so skeptical of the invitation he received to attend Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding that he feared he had traveled from the UK to New York City on a wild goose chase.

On Wednesday, the voice behind the “BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show” shared with his audience that he had received the invite via a link in the dead of night on March 12.

“I immediately shut my phone off, thinking, ‘I can’t deal with something this outrageous right now,’” recalled the 40-year-old, admitting he kept the surprising news to himself for a week.

With no paper invitation to corroborate the digital one, James was convinced the online invite was nothing more than a hoax designed to fool him.

“Until [my wife, Bella Mackie, and I] were in, we thought we may have made a big trip here for nothing,” the DJ admitted. “I wasn’t sure until we got there. … There was a huge part us that was … like, ‘This could not be real. This could be a scam.’”

Swift, 36, verbally invited James to her wedding during an October 2025 interview on the heels of her engagement.

When James joked about Kelce, also 36, doing “a wrestling move” on him, the pop star replied, “He’s going to do that as soon as he sees you at our wedding. That’s gonna happen.”

James then asked whether he was “coming,” to which Swift confirmed, “Obviously.”

More than 1,000 guests attended Swift and Kelce’s Madison Square Garden wedding on Friday.

Here’s the latest on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding at MSG:

Ashish Ferguson gave the first look at the couple’s digital invitations in an Instagram post over the weekend, with the forest-themed painting featuring a custom double “T” monogram and a watermark with the guest’s name.

“You’re invited,” it read. “July 3rd, 2026 Manhattan. Love, Taylor & Travis. One night only. Early evening. Black tie.”

James, whose invitation ultimately ended up being legit, “had the best night maybe ever” at the star-studded ceremony.

He called the food “plentiful” and “amazing,” adding, “It wasn’t a sit-down dinner, I’ll say that. There were multiple cakes … loads of cakes.”

“I did speak to Taylor and I spoke to Travis, but look, on a wedding you know the bride and groom are very busy, so imagine that, but the bride and groom are Taylor and Travis,” James continued. “They were just having a great time. They both looked amazing. They were on the dance floor, it was great.”

While he shared more information via Instagram, quipping that he has “changed [his] mind about destination weddings,” the radio personality was wary of saying so much that the bride “never speaks to [him] again.”

James explained, “It was a wedding and there’s lots of nice family things that they did, so I don’t want to speak about all that stuff.”

Queen Camilla’s Wimbledon Appearance Steals the Show: A Grand Slam of Royal Tennis Excitement

0

Wimbledon was given a regal touch this afternoon when the Queen stepped out with her younger sister, Annabel Elliot. They were in the company of the newlywed couple Peter and Harriet Phillips, adding to the day’s festive atmosphere.

At 78, Camilla dazzled in her vibrant summer attire, donning a striking cerulean Anna Valentine dress. This is the same eye-catching outfit she sported at Ascot races last month as she enjoyed the tennis action at SW19 on the championship’s 10th day.

The royal sisters uphold a cherished tradition of attending the tournament almost every year, securing prime spots in the Royal Box to watch the action unfold.

Dressed in a chic ivory ensemble that evoked classic tennis attire, 77-year-old Annabel accompanied her sister. Together, they were warmly welcomed by Deborah Jevans, Chair of The All England Lawn Tennis Club.

The King’s wife was in a joyful mood, sharing smiles as she met with past British tennis star Heather Watson, along with Ball Boy Zebedee and Ball Girl Aniya, both 15 years old.

She also spoke to Morag Ranford, who has spent 50 years working at Wimbledon in the press operations team, and Peter Dobson – who is this year retiring after 25 years of working as Safety Officer at the Championships.

Elsewhere, the Queen also met with Richard Gammage, CEO of City Harvest – a charity tackling food waste at this year’s sports event.

Princess Anne’s son Peter Phillips, 48, meanwhile, was dapper in a light grey blazer and navy trousers, while his wife Harriet, 45, stunned in a £1,330 checked lime and blue ensemble from Emilia Wickstead.

It’s been a busy social calendar for the couple – who tied the knot in June – as they also joined the King and Queen for Ascot last month.

The pair held an ‘intimate’ ceremony in the Cotswolds, in front of the King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family.

Harriet looked resplendent in a white Emilia Wickstead gown and the Pragnell family tiara – and the pair were the picture of wedded bliss as they sealed their marriage with a kiss outside All Saints Church.

Harriet’s wedding train was held by her three bridesmaids, her daughter Georgina, 14, and Peter’s children, Isla, 14, and Savannah, 15, with former wife Autumn Kelly, who all looked elegant in floral garlands and matching white dresses from the same designer.

And last week, Tatler crowned them ‘the new royal couple to watch’.

It comes as yesterday, Camilla was out and about in East Sussex, as she visited Ashdown Forest near Hartfield to commemorate 100 years since the publication of the first Winnie the Pooh book in 1926.

Ashdown Forest was the inspiration for the original Hundred Acre Wood and former home of author, A. A. Milne.

The royal, who is Patron of the Royal Literary Fund, spoke with wellwishers and local school children for the event, as she was joined by Gyles Brandreth, who gave a reading.

Later, she was praised as a ‘real character’ and a ‘lovely lady’ after dropping in at a pub in Plumpton, nearby the area.

The 78-year-old visited The Half Moon Pub – which serves British classics and also doubles as a campsite – in the village where she grew up.

Camilla was raised at Plumpton’s The Laines, the seven-bedroom property she once described as ‘perfect in every way’.

‘Lovely to have Queen Camilla for lunch today,’ the Facebook post for the pub read, before a later comment added, ‘A real character and lovely to welcome her. Such a lovely lady!’

King Charles’s wife, dressed in a bottle green floral dress, was pictured smiling alongside two staff members.

Social media users took to the comments section to share their thoughts, with one writing: ‘Terrific! Home again!’

A second said: ‘I saw the helicopter in the front field of the college as I drove past; I wondered who it was. Congratulations, very cool.’

‘Got stopped by a police motorbike just before the pub and I thought in my head it must be the Queen,’ said another.

And today, Camilla was all smiles as she joined her sister – who she is known to share a close bond with – for Wimbledon.

In December 2024, the Queen’s sister was full of praise for her silbing and described her as the King’s ‘rock’ for a  BBC One royal documentary following Charles’s first year as monarch, Charles III: The Coronation Year.

Annabel, who acted as one of her sister’s two Ladies in Attendance on the day of the Coronation, added: ‘She is his rock, and I can’t actually emphasise that enough.

‘She’s somebody who is completely loyal and she isn’t somebody who has huge highs and lows.’

But she stressed that it wasn’t a one-sided relationship, explaining: ‘He brings to her everything. I’m not talking about all of this [she said, referring to Buckingham Palace], but… he has such a knowledge and interest in so many different things, which she wouldn’t really have been open to if she hadn’t met him.

‘They are yin and yang, really. They really are polar opposites. But I think it works brilliantly.’

Discover Why the New ‘Elle’ Series Falls Short as the ‘Legally Blonde’ Prequel Fans Expected

When I had the opportunity to preview episodes of Elle, Prime Video’s vibrant new prequel to Legally Blonde, I committed to approaching it with an open mind. The promotional materials and initial photos of Lexi Minetree—an emerging talent in Hollywood stepping into the iconic shoes of Elle Woods two decades after Reese Witherspoon first brought her to life—hinted at a series that promised to be joyful, albeit a bit puzzling.

The storyline introduces us to Minetree’s well-to-do character, who is abruptly uprooted from her cushy life in Bel Air to the rain-soaked streets of Seattle due to an unfortunate incident involving one of her father’s (played by Tom Everett Scott) plastic surgery clients. In this new setting of mid-90s Seattle, Elle finds herself in a world dominated by the grunge and counterculture movements, marking a stark contrast to her bubbly and bright personality.

At first glance, the premise of the series is intriguing. It features a seemingly flawless young woman forced to reassess her life when she becomes an outsider through circumstances beyond her control. The ‘fish out of water’ theme is universally appealing, particularly when the protagonist rises above challenges, staying true to her principles without conforming to an unfamiliar environment. It’s a well-loved motif in many stories across film and television.

However, therein lies the issue.

By developing Elle around a cherished character from such a beloved film series, one would expect the creators to bring fresh narrative angles to this familiar intellectual property, enriching the character’s journey and perspective. The challenge with a show like Elle is that it attempts to reframe a narrative that fans already respect and admire. Legally Blonde is a timeless classic, revered for its empowering message, especially for women, advocating for integrity and dispelling prejudgments. It’s already a masterful exploration of a fish-out-of-water story that embodies these themes.

So naturally, I started Elle by asking: What is the reason for this prequel? What is Elle adding to this conversation? And the answer is…I’m not sure, honestly.

Perhaps it’s because they were too afraid to stray from the original formula that made Legally Blonde a success in the first place, but watching a teenage Elle Woods — the same girl who would one day go on to experience isolation and adversity less than a decade later in an unfamiliar place — experience isolation and adversity in a cloudy and unfamiliar place just comes across as head-scratching. What makes Legally Blonde so endearing is that we get to watch a young woman who has never been the sore thumb that sticks out put her whole self, intelligent mind included, out there. We want to cheer on the underdog, the person who is immediately counted out; it’s humanistic. But if Elle is about a younger Elle Woods experiencing everything she will just have to go through again in a few years time in Legally Blonde, then the original film’s effervescent, underdog charm is immediately undone.

My frustration was simmering pretty low below the surface for much of the first few episodes — that is, until I reached Episode 3 (“You’re Not the Girl I Thought You Were”). Elle goes to a “pool party” wearing a bright pink bikini, only to discover that the pool has been drained and is being used by the cool Seattle kids as a skateboarding venue. If the general sentiment behind that situation (minus the skateboards and pool, of course) sounds familiar at all to you, it could be because a nearly identical thing happens to Elle in Legally Blonde as she shows up to a “Halloween party” in an exposing Playboy bunny costume, only to find everyone else fully dressed and heavily judging her. Surprise, surprise: the copycat scene in the show also leads to a turning point in Elle’s quest to finally make a place for herself in her new home. In the show, that means Elle finally realizes that she just has to be her bold, unabashed self, which translates to singing No Doubt’s “I’m Just a Girl” karaoke-style at the pool party as the entire crowd watches and then joins in.

It’s dramatic, for sure, but by canonically having Elle Woods learn the same brutal and embarrassing lesson twice, felt like a dismissal of this character’s growth and intelligence. Elle Woods is not stupid — that is saliently clear to anyone who has watched Legally Blonde, Elle, or both. Spoiled? Yes. High-strung? Absolutely. But an idiot? Hell no. It’s why watching this particular scene, and the show in general, felt incoherent. Is this show assuming that the Elle Woods of tomorrow is so undiscerning or careless that she would not exercise a little more judgement or caution as she goes about the world, especially at something like a Halloween party for Harvard Law School students? Obviously, it’s not meant to be offensive to the original character — Elle is, by definition, a celebration of a character people worship — but it feels impetuous to have the power of her character arc in Legally Blonde weakened with such choices.

For me, it all goes back to the basic concept behind improv: i.e. “yes and.” To make a cohesive and enjoyable prequel or legacy sequel, you have to be able to hold the core truth of the original project close while also expanding the world based on what the audience is already aware of. It should never be an attempt to rewrite history or rehash stories that have already been told. When making a project built on another (beloved) film or TV show, you have to have a strong enough concept that does not alienate or confuse the people who love the original. If even one fan is sitting there telling you that something does not make sense, it probably is worth hearing them out, especially if that “one fan” is really the thousands of people online who have said since the logline of the show was released that the premise is nonsensical. How could Elle be the person we see her as in Legally Blonde after experiencing something like a major move in a formative period of her life, and it not have a lick of an impact on her character? And for anyone whose immediate retort is that Elle is a resilient person, as displayed in the film, resilience has bounds.

Why couldn’t Elle have been an exploration of a college-aged Elle Woods, navigating life in Delta Nu and finding Warner? Sure, there is less conflict in that idea than seeing a high school student forced to move more than 1,000 miles away to a place she does not know or understand, but if there’s one thing this character is built on, it’s the absence of such struggles. So why would they put forward a show that carbon copies a storyline we’ve already seen for a character we already know? And why would they set it an inexplicable number of years out from when we first meet the character in the original movie? That, to me, feels like a clear indication that the people in charge care more about stretching out content than they do preserving the integrity of the movie and building off of it. And while the series certainly has cute moments and a stellar performance from Minetree, at the end of the day, to quote the musical that did do Legally Blonde justice, Elle Woods deserves “so much better.”
