Inside the Billion-Dollar Family Feud: Ray-Ban’s Succession Saga Revealed

0

An empire of unparalleled fame rests uneasily in the hands of heirs who harbor an intense dislike for each other. Tensions in the family now threaten the legacy of one of the world’s most iconic eyewear brands.

This turmoil centers on an Italian family whose vast wealth was secured by building the illustrious Ray-Ban brand. Today, they find themselves embroiled in a searing legal feud, desperately battling for control over the multi-billion-dollar dynasty.

While they present a united front at glitzy venues like Fashion Week and the Met Gala, behind the scenes, the family operates in a realm reminiscent of a television drama. Their fierce inheritance disputes have spilled from boardrooms into courtrooms, casting a shadow over their public image.

This saga traces its roots back to Leonardo Del Vecchio, who started as a tool-and-die apprentice in Milan before founding Luxottica in 1961. Through strategic acquisitions, including the purchase of Ray-Ban and Oakley, and fusing with a French lens manufacturer, he built EssilorLuxottica, the largest entity in the eyewear industry.

Leonardo Del Vecchio’s passing in June 2022 left behind not only a staggering fortune, valued at $25.5 billion, but also a volatile situation—an impending storm over his heirs that could not be avoided.

Rather than crown a single heir, he carved up his stake in the secretive holding company that controls EssilorLuxottica, handing each of his six children 12.5 percent and his widow, Nicoletta Zampillo, 68, a 25 percent stake. She signed half of hers over to Rocco Basilico, 36, her son from her first marriage, leaving an eight-way split.

His six children are scattered across three relationships. Claudio, 69, Marisa, 67, and Paola, 65, came from his first marriage, to Luciana Nervo. Leonardo Maria, 31, is the son he had with second wife Zampillo. And Luca, 24, and Clemente, 21, are his sons with Sabina Grossi, his former head of investor relations.

The eight shares of Delfin are worth an estimated $3.5 billion each. As of 2023, that makes Del Vecchio’s heirs billionaires, cementing their ranking among Italy’s richest residents.

When it came to the over $125 million in inheritance tax, however, weeks passed before a decision was reached within the family.

The hefty inheritance tax, combined with the transfer of two homes owned by Delfin (worth about $87 million) to Zampillo, and the transfer of 2.15 million EssilorLuxottica shares (worth about $307 million) to CEO Francesco Milleri, plus 22,000 shares to manager Romolo Bardin, left the estate temporarily in limbo.

In his will, Del Vecchio did not specify who would replace him as president of Delfin, according to Italian news agency Ansa.

‘This is a succession planning failure playing out in public,’ business expert Brad Sugars told the Daily Mail. ‘When founders don’t architect airtight governance before they’re gone, families fight the battle after – expensively and visibly.’

Del Vecchio’s heirs chose to accept the inheritance ‘with benefit of inventory,’ meaning all assets and debts were identified before they decided to keep or sell – a way for the recipients to look at an estate before accepting the potential financial risks that come with it.

The potential extra amount owed would’ve been around $45.5 million for each of the six children. But even with the inventory process finished, the heirs reportedly had not yet reached an agreement on how to divide everything by September 2023.

At the time, Leonardo Maria told the Via Solferino newspaper, ‘If I think we haven’t yet managed to close the succession, I’m honestly ashamed.’

In early 2024, the family members neared a ‘new agreement’ on the management of Del Vecchio’s estate, according to Forbes Italy.

Some heirs asked for changes to Delfin’s internal rules that would make a clear path for any shareholder who wants to sell some or all of their stake. The proposed rules set out when and how an heir could exit their investment, rather than leaving the process open to negotiation each time.

Enter Leonardo Maria.

Leonardo Maria is the only remaining heir who works at the company.

He first joined in 2017, eventually becoming the president of Ray Ban, which EssilorLuxottica acquired for $640 million in 1999.

Recently, he laid out a plan to become the majority shareholder in the parent company. The proposal focuses on buying out the combined 25 percent stake in Delfin held by his siblings Luca and Paola.

If successful, the deal would triple Leonardo Maria’s holding from 12.5 percent to 37.5 percent, making him the majority shareholder and putting him firmly in control of his family’s empire.

But the transaction depends on whether he can secure the $11.5 billion in financing from UniCredit, BNP Paribas and Crédit Agricole, which he would then use to pay his siblings in exchange for their shares.

Last month, Leonardo Maria’s half-brother Rocco challenged some of Delfin’s proposal in court in an attempt to block his sibling from becoming the majority shareholder.

The half-brothers have since reached a provisional agreement. But in the aftermath, Leonardo Maria shared a statement saying his deal hasn’t been finalized because of ‘issues of sustainability and risk allocation.’

‘On 30 June, we will be addressing something much deeper: the very nature and future of Delfin,’ Leonardo Maria wrote in a letter, accusing Delfin’s leadership of failing to explain why concerns about his proposed buyout were raised only after shareholders approved parts of his deal.

The letter comes less than two weeks before Delfin’s upcoming shareholders’ meeting, scheduled for June 30.

And while Ray Ban may be the most recognizable consumer-facing brand, the real prize is Delfin’s industry-wide influence over EssilorLuxottica, Generali, UniCredit and Monte dei Paschi.

The latter is one of the most important as the third largest Italian bank. Because Delfin is the majority shareholder, they have sway over curial mergers or acquisitions with competitors like Banco BPM or Intesa Sanpaolo.

Aside from making a splash in the business world, Leonardo Maria made headlines with his personal life by attending the Met Gala, Vogue Italia’s 60th anniversary dinner and other star-studded events in between.

Leonardo Maria was also married to Anna Castellini Baldissera, having a wedding ceremony in June 2022 before divorcing six months later.

The two, according to his Instagram account, actually married in September 2021 in the celebration hall of the Royal Palace in Milan. It is unclear why the couple split, according to Vanity Fair.

In July 2023, the heir and American Days of Our Lives star Jessica Serfaty, 35, got engaged.

The couple made a few public appearances – including on the Met Gala red carpet sporting Ray Bans – but Serfaty’s accusation of abuse on social media overshadowed the now-ended relationship.

‘This is the man who has abused me,’ she said in a faltering voice, pointing the camera at Leonardo Maria. Shortly after, Serfaty posted a photo of herself posing in a bikini along with a statement withdrawing the allegation and defending her then-partner.

‘Leo and I apologize for any who were triggered or affected by yesterday’s story. Sometimes a family can have their own arguments and these should never be made public,’ it stated.

‘We ask that people respect our privacy at this time. I would never stay with an abusive man and which Leonardo Del Vecchio is not.

‘I revoke my words that were driven by anger and not in truth. I take back my words on a guy that will always be my companion, step father [to my child] and family person to me.’

Just weeks later, the couple called off their engagement.

Leonardo Maria was also caught in the middle of an investigation against a Milan-based private intelligence firm, Equalize.

Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore claimed prosecutors are investigating whether people connected to the Equalize intelligence network illegally gathered private information about Leonardo Maria and then used it to pressure or extort him.

The heir said he was misled by Equalize into believing others were spying on him, while the same company was allegedly collecting information on him behind the scenes.

The case suggests that some individuals who appeared to be clients of the surveillance operation may actually have been victims of it as well. As of June 2026, the Equalize investigation is still ongoing.

Now, Leonardo Maria is dating 22-year-old Polish content creator and model Kornelia Ski. The couple were spotted together at Cannes Film Festival, Art Basel Hong Kong and an event for Ray-Ban and Dolce & Gabbana.

Their relationship was first reported in early March 2026, shortly after they were spotted together at Milan Fashion Week.

In April, the two posed with Scuderia Ferrari for the F1 Japanese Grand Prix.

Rocco and Leonardo Maria. The former left the family business to ‘pursue his personal interests,’ according to a statement from EssilorLuxottica

Meanwhile, Rocco was one of only two Del Vecchio heirs who worked at the family business long term, acting as EssilorLuxottica’s chief wearables officer and head of luxury brands until December 2025.

‘After six years supporting our smart eyewear journey, Rocco has decided to pursue his personal interests outside of the company, effective in January 2026,’ EssilorLuxottica said in a statement at the time.

‘He leaves at a time when our position as the category leader is well defined and when our talent pipeline, particularly in the wearables space, is very healthy.’

Zampillo currently serves as the president of the Fondazione Leonardo Del Vecchio, advancing education and eye care initiatives worldwide.

Her first marriage to Del Vecchio lasted from 1997 to 2000, after they met through her father’s ties to Luxottica. Leonardo Maria was born in May 1995.

After their separation, the two married again in 2010 and remained together until Del Vecchio’s death.

Prior to Zampillo, Del Vecchio was married to Luciana Nervo. They had three children together: Claudio, Mariso and Paola Del Vecchio.

He also had a relationship with Sabina Grossi, former Luxottica board member and the company’s former head of investor relations. Although they had two children together, Luca and Clemente, they never wed.

Claudio, one of Del Vecchio’s oldest children, acted as the Luxottica CEO in the 1990s, leading the acquisition of LensCrafters in 1995.

After leaving the company, he acquired the luxury clothing store Brooks Brothers in 2001. It filed for bankruptcy in September 2020 and was later acquired by Authentic Brands.

Del Vecchio’s remaining children keep somewhat of a low profile, even if several of them top Forbes’ list of wealthiest businesspeople. Clemente, became the youngest billionaire in the world at just 19 years old when his father died.

Taylor Swift’s Teacher Kirk Schwabe Passes Away from Cancer on Her Wedding Day to Travis Kelce at MSG

0

On the very day that Taylor Swift tied the knot with Travis Kelce in New York City, news emerged of the passing of one of her former teachers.

Kirk Schwabe, who once taught Swift criminal justice at Hendersonville High School in Nashville and later took on the role of her security guard, succumbed to metastatic kidney cancer at the age of 69 last Friday, as confirmed by his family to The Telegraph.

Sarah Gordon, Schwabe’s daughter, disclosed on Thursday that her father’s condition had worsened significantly, leading to his transition to hospice care.

“In recent weeks, his health declined swiftly, prompting his move to hospice care,” Gordon shared on Facebook this past Thursday.

“Those who know my father understand that he devoted his heart to everything he did,” Sarah elaborated. “Teaching was his passion, and he cherished his students.”

Gordon posted a photo of Swift with her dad while holding a framed record plaque commemorating the release of her 2006 self-titled debut album, “Taylor Swift.”

Schwabe was a police officer in Chicago before he became a criminal justice educator and taught Swift from 2004 to 2006, while the “Opalite” singer was in her mid-teens.

Before his death, Schwabe said he believed his former student had found the right partner in Kelce.

“I do trust Taylor’s judgment. She knows what’s best,” he said in an interview with The Telegraph which was published on July 2.

Schwabe recalled telling Swift that her life was about to change as her career took off.

“I told her, you’re a superstar. This is not fun and games no more. You are it. Everything keeps going up and up and up, and the sky’s the limit for you,” he said.

While working as Swift’s security guard, Schwabe admitted he watched her rise to fame with “panic.”

“If anything happens, I’m the guy,” he said. “We got four or five hundred people in here, and I got some extra security guards, but I don’t know a lot of these guys who got hired, I don’t know what their qualifications are.”

“He treated her like he did his daughters,” his wife Jane added.

Schwabe later left his job as Swift’s security guard after becoming burned out, but remained fond of the singer.

When the pop star made a cameo in the 2010 film “Valentine’s Day,” her character’s teacher was named “Mr. Schwabe,” in reference to the beloved educator.

Swift and Kelce married in a star-studded ceremony at Madison Square Garden officiated by Adam Sandler on Friday.

Although Schwabe did not live to see the wedding, his family told the outlet he remained proud of Swift’s success and was happy for both her and Kelce ahead of the ceremony.

Swift’s aunt Robin Gentry revealed the couple “cried and they laughed and they danced and they hugged and they kissed,” adding there was “lots” of food and that guests were served cake.

Paul McCartney performed The Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand” for the couple, while Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks also took the stage.

Signs outside MSG read “JUST&T MARRIED” to announce the news that the couple had made things official.

Pastor Funke Adejumo Urges Men Not to Sacrifice Their Well-Being for Approval

Well-known pastor Funke Adejumo from Agape Christian Ministries has cautioned husbands against losing their individuality in efforts to please their wives, declaring that satisfying a woman’s every need is beyond any man’s reach.

During her sermon, the pastor explained that women are inherently inclined toward change and advancement, illustrating her point with examples from beauty practices and advising men not to burden themselves unnecessarily.

She highlighted that even God, who crafted women flawlessly, did not discourage them from seeking ways to enhance their appearance.

“To every husband, don’t stress yourself trying to make a woman completely happy. I speak this as a woman, knowing that satisfying a woman fully is unattainable,” she remarked.

Pastor Adejumo emphasized that women often modify their natural gifts despite their belief in being divinely created with beauty, serving as a reminder to men that reaching perfection is an unrealistic goal.

She encouraged husbands to love and care for their wives but warned against exhausting themselves in a bid to meet every expectation.

“God gave us natural nails, we cut them and put on artificial ones. He gave us natural hair, we remove it and wear wigs. If God cannot please us completely, who are you to think you can? she added.”

Her remarks have generated mixed reactions online. While some people agreed with her message and described it as practical marriage advice, others argued that healthy relationships require both partners to make sacrifices for each other.

The statement has continued to spark conversations on social media about marriage expectations, self-worth, and the pressure many spouses place on themselves to keep their partners happy.

American Pope Issues Symbolic Independence Day Message on Immigration to the U.S.

0

Pope Leo XIV, known for his confrontations with the Trump administration over immigration policies, chose to spend the Fourth of July at the heart of Europe’s migration challenges. He visited to pay tribute to the countless lives lost in the perilous journey to European shores.

While Americans observed the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with festivities and fireworks, the US-born Pope traveled to Lampedusa, a Sicilian island, where he held a prayer service at a migrant cemetery and conducted a solemn Mass for the local community and new arrivals.

Later on Sunday AEST, embracing the July 4th spirit, he paid a visit to Brian Burch, the US ambassador to the Holy See. This visit was notable as popes rarely make calls to ambassadors’ residences.

The US embassy revealed that Ambassador Burch presented Pope Leo with a commemorative baseball, a slice of apple pie, and a US World Cup jersey.

On X, the embassy reported that Pope Leo affirmed his support for the US soccer team, mentioning that their discussions encompassed America’s initiatives on peace, the promotion of religious freedom, and the imperative for moral fortitude and courage globally.

A treeless strip of rock nine kilometres long, Lampedusa is closer to Africa than the Italian mainland and is the main port of entry into Europe for hundreds of thousands of migrants who crossed by boat from Libya or Tunisia, often smuggled by human traffickers.

Leo met with some migrants at the port and then walked alone onto the jagged jetty rocks, the wind whipping his cassock and blowing his zucchetto skullcap off as he looked out to the sea.

He then blessed a plaque dedicating the dock to Pope Francis, who visited in 2013, before celebrating Mass on land.

“This is a place where gestures speak louder than words,” Leo said.

“But for gestures to be human, they need a heart.”

In making the visit on this particular day, Leo was sending a powerfully symbolic message to the United States and Europe of the Christian obligation to uphold the dignity of every human being, migrants and the most vulnerable especially, while reminding the United States that it was founded by immigrants.

In a letter sent to Americans on the 4 July anniversary, Leo insisted that protecting the unborn and all human life also means “welcoming, protecting and assisting immigrants, whose hopes, sacrifices and contribution have formed part of the history of this country from its very beginning”.

“To receive them with compassion and generosity is not only an act of charity, but also a recognition of the dignity that belongs to every human person,” Leo wrote.

In recent years, Lampedusa has become ground zero of Europe’s migration debate as the continent struggles to police its borders while honouring its legal obligations to welcome refugees fleeing conflict, climate change and poverty.

In his homily, Leo thanked the residents of Lampedusa for the “miracle of compassion” they have shown in welcoming migrants and urged Europe to rise to the challenge of the moment and assume its responsibility.

“Indeed, before any intellectual consideration or ideological conviction, the encounter with those who lie before us, stripped of everything, calls us to be close to them,” Leo said, wearing vestments decorated with images of waves.

Preaching from “this far-flung corner of Europe on the Mediterranean Sea,” Leo urged European leaders to address the migration phenomenon in a comprehensive way, integrating immediate relief with long-term strategies to receive, protect, support and integrate migrants while developing their home countries so no one is forced to migrate.

“Here you have seen not just one, but thousands of human beings fallen into the hands of robbers who have taken everything from them, beat them brutally and walked away, leaving them half-dead,” he said.

Chicago Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong and White Sox’s Miguel Vargas Join 2026 MLB All-Star Game Rosters

0

CHICAGO — In an exciting update for baseball fans, Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Chicago Cubs and Miguel Vargas from the Chicago White Sox have earned spots on the reserve rosters for the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, representing the National League and American League, respectively.

This announcement came on Saturday evening when both teams revealed their All-Star players.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Shohei Ohtani, a standout player, is set to headline the National League’s starting lineup, accompanied by three teammates from the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have been champions for two consecutive years. MLB shared this exciting lineup on Saturday while unveiling the rosters for the upcoming All-Star Game.

Dominating the votes, Ohtani has been chosen as the National League’s designated hitter. Joining him are Dodgers’ stars Freddie Freeman at first base, Max Muncy at third, and Andy Pages patrolling the outfield.

Completing the National League’s starting lineup are outfielder Juan Soto from the New York Mets, outfielder Brandon Marsh from the Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams, Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies, and catcher Drake Baldwin.

In the American League, leading vote-getter Ernie Clement is joined by Toronto Blue Jays teammate Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on the right side of the infield, along with Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero, Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers and Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez.

The Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout, the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge and the Minnesota Twins’ Byron Buxton will make up the AL’s starting outfield.

The All-Star Game will take place at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on July 14. Starters were voted on by the fans, while the reserves were selected as a combination between Major League Baseball and ballots cast by current players, managers and coaches.

The Dodgers (Ohtani, Freeman, Muncy, Pages and starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto), Braves (Baldwin, Albies, first baseman Matt Olson, starting pitcher Chris Sale and closer Raisel Iglesias) and Phillies (Marsh, first baseman Bryce Harper, DH Kyle Schwarber, starting pitcher Cristopher Sanchez and closer Jhoan Duran) are each sending five players to the All-Star Game.

The Blue Jays (Clement, Guerrero, starting pitcher Dylan Cease and closer Louis Varland), Yankees (Judge, first baseman Ben Rice, outfielder Cody Bellinger and starting pitcher Cam Schlittler) and Rays (Caminero, DH Yandy Diaz, starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen and closer Bryan Baker) are sending four each.

Just as notable on the rosters, though, was a star-studded rookie class, with Travis Bazzana and Parker Messick of the Cleveland Guardians, Kevin McGonigle of the Detroit Tigers and Sal Stewart of the Cincinnati Reds all making the team.

The full list of AL reserves, starting with position players, are Dillon Dingler (Tigers), Adley Rutschman (Baltimore Orioles), Bazzana, Nick Kurtz (Athletics), McGonigle, Rice, Miguel Vargas (Chicago White Sox), Randy Arozarena (Seattle Mariners), Bellinger, Riley Greene (Tigers), Diaz, Baker, Cease, Aroldis Chapman (Boston Red Sox), Jacob Latz (Texas Rangers), Messick, Rasmussen, Joe Ryan (Twins), Schlittler, Cade Smith (Guardians), Ranger Suarez (Red Sox), Varland and Michael Wacha (Kansas City Royals).

The NL reserves are William Contreras (Milwaukee Brewers), Hunter Goodman (Colorado Rockies), Luis Arraez (San Francisco Giants), Harper, Otto Lopez (Miami Marlins), Olson, Stewart, Corbin Carroll (Arizona Diamondbacks, Pete Crow-Armstrong (Chicago Cubs), Jordan Walker (St. Louis Cardinals), James Wood (Washington Nationals), Schwarber, Chase Burns (Reds), Duran, Iglesias, Max Meyer (Marlins), Mason Miller (San Diego Padres), Jacob Misiorowski (Brewers), Eduardo Rodriguez (Diamondbacks), Sale, Sanchez, Paul Skenes (Pittsburgh Pirates), Logan Webb (Giants) and Yamamoto.

Sanchez is the favorite to start the All-Star Game for the NL, given his Cy Young candidacy and the opportunity to pitch in his home ballpark. Schlittler, Rasmussen and Cease are candidates to start for the AL.

MLB once again designated one representative from each of its 30 teams and will go back to having players wear their original team uniforms for this year’s All-Star Game, bucking the recent trend of specialized jerseys for the event.

Five of the starters — Langeliers, Clement, Baldwin, Marsh and Pages — are first-time All-Stars. Freeman and Sale, meanwhile, are going for the 10th time.

Trout is making his 12th trip to the All-Star Game and first since 2023, an event he did not attend because he was recovering from an injury to his left hand. Trout is currently on the injured list with a hamstring injury, but he is expected to be activated by early next week and expects to be on the field for this year’s Midsummer Classic, which will take place close to where he grew up.

The first-place Dodgers, aiming to become the first NL team to win three consecutive championships, have had at least five players make the All-Star Game seven consecutive years.

Quick and Effective: The Ultimate Full-Body Workout for Those Over 50

Pressed for time after turning 50? Here are five exercises that can efficiently engage every key muscle group in just a swift 10 minutes.

>

Once you reach the half-century mark, the importance of consistency in your fitness routine outweighs the need for long and grueling workouts. Yet, with increasingly packed schedules brimming with career demands and family commitments, prioritizing health and fitness often slips down the list. Thankfully, maintaining and enhancing strength doesn’t require a significant time investment and can be conveniently accomplished at home in just a short 10-minute session.

To gain further insights, we consulted with James Brady, CPT, a seasoned personal trainer at OriGym. He asserts that brief workouts, when planned thoughtfully, can prove remarkably beneficial.

“There’s a common misconception that staying fit after 50 necessitates lengthy workout sessions,” Brady shares. “However, a meticulously crafted 10-minute regimen can effectively target all major muscle groups. The secret lies in selecting compound exercises that maximize the efficiency of your time.”

Research focused on aging adults has shown that engaging in a simple 10-minute workout a few times weekly can significantly enhance fitness levels and support healthy aging. This reveals that these brief yet steady efforts accumulate meaningful benefits over time.

The following five exercises create a simple full-body workout that targets every muscle group in your body, including your legs, chest, shoulders, glutes, core, and back-supporting muscles in just 10 minutes. Let’s dive in.

(Next up: 5 Core Moves That Shrink Your Belly Faster Than Crunches After 55.)

Bodyweight Squats

Squats are a top notch compound exercise and absolute gamechanger for building total body strength. They work your quads, glutes, hamstrings, and core while supporting common daily movement patterns that help maintain functional fitness as you age.

How to do it:

  1. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Engage your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Push your hips backward as if sitting into a chair.
  4. Bend your knees and lower your body comfortably.
  5. Keep your weight centered through your heels.
  6. Lower until your thighs are roughly parallel to the floor (or as far as your mobility permits).
  7. Pause for one to two seconds at the bottom of the movement.
  8. Drive through your heels to stand.
  9. Fully extend your hips at the top.
  10. Aim for two sets of 10 to 15 reps, resting for 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

Push-ups

Push-ups are a classic bodyweight exercise because they train your chest, shoulders, triceps, and core. They also challenge your stability and body control in ways many gym machine exercises cannot.

How to do it:

  1. Start in a high plank position.
  2. Position your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. Create a straight line from head to toe.
  4. Flex your core and engage your glutes.
  5. Slowly bend your elbows.
  6. Lower your chest toward the floor.
  7. Keep your elbows angled slightly backward.
  8. Push through your palms to return to the starting position.
  9. Maintain full-body tension throughout.
  10. Perform two sets of 8 to 12 reps. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

4 Morning Exercises That Reverse Sitting Damage Faster Than Yoga After 60

Glute Bridges

It’s no secret that many of us spend too much time sitting, which can lead to weak and underactivated glutes.  Fortunately, glute bridges can help strengthen these muscles while improving your hip mobility.

How to do it:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent.
  2. Place your feet flat on the floor hip-width apart.
  3. Rest your arms at your sides.
  4. Tighten your core muscles.
  5. Press through your heels.
  6. Lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to knees.
  7. Squeeze your glutes at the top of the movement.
  8. Pause for one to two seconds at the top of the movement.
  9. Lower slowly back to the floor.
  10. Complete two sets of 12 to 15 reps. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

Reverse Lunges

Reverse lunges are a fantastic lower body strength builder that can also help improve your balance, coordination, and stability. Compared to forward lunges, they often place less stress on your knees, making them an excellent option for those over 50.

How to do it:

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Brace your core and maintain upright posture.
  3. Step one leg backward.
  4. Lower until both knees are bent.
  5. Keep your front knee aligned over your ankle.
  6. Avoid leaning too far forward.
  7. Push through your front heel.
  8. Return to a standing position.
  9. Alternate sides with each rep.
  10. Perform two sets of 8 to 10 reps per leg, resting for 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

4 Home Exercises That Restore Grip Strength Faster Than Gym Machines After 60

Planks

Planks are the gold standard for building core strength. Unlike crunches, planks train your ab muscles to resist movement, which research shows is how the core functions during common daily activities.

How to do it:

  1. Get down on your forearms and toes.
  2. Position your elbows directly beneath your shoulders.
  3. Create a straight line from head to toe.
  4. Flex your ab muscles.
  5. Tighten your glutes and legs.
  6. Keep your hips level.
  7. Avoid letting your lower back sag.
  8. Breathe steadily through your nose.
  9. Hold for 20 to 45 seconds and repeat for two rounds. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between sets.

Freddie Freeman and Yoshinobu Yamamoto Propel Dodgers to Victory Over Padres

0

As soon as Saturday’s baseball game commenced at Dodger Stadium, the sky outside sparkled with fireworks in celebration of the Fourth of July.

Yet, the real show inside the stadium was reserved for the sixth inning when Freddie Freeman ignited the packed crowd during the Dodgers’ 3-0 triumph over the Padres.

In an unexpected pitching contest featuring All-Star Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Griffin Canning, who had an ERA above 7.00, Freeman made the defining play with a solo home run on his third at-bat, which firmly secured the Dodgers’ lead and ultimately the series victory.

Until that critical juncture, Yamamoto’s performance was practically flawless, preserving the Dodgers’ narrow 1-0 advantage, which had been earned in the third inning through an RBI single by Andy Pages.

However, once Canning exited the mound, Freeman made a stunning introduction to reliever Kyle Hart, sending a definitive reminder of his power with a home run on the third pitch, marking his 15th of the season. Notably, this was the same day he was selected to his 10th career All-Star Game.

“Every one is special,” Freeman said. “So looking forward to next week.”

While that blast only made it a two-run game, it felt like much more the way Yamamoto was dealing.

After working around three singles in the first two innings, then stranding his lone walk of the night in the fourth, the right-hander validated his own All-Star selection from earlier in the day, retiring 11 of his last 12 batters to complete a scoreless seven-inning outing.

From there, all the Independence Day crowd had to do was wait for the actual postgame fireworks show.

Alex Vesia stranded a Padres runner in the top of the eighth with a three-pitch strikeout. Freeman stretched the Dodgers’ lead with the bottom of the inning –– against Padres superstar closer Mason Miller, no less –– with an RBI single. And in the ninth, Will Klein collected his second save of the season.

What it means

After dramatic come-from-behind wins in the first two games of this series, the Dodgers (58-31) produced a much more straightforward wire-to-wire victory Saturday, one that knocked the Padres (43-45) out of second place entirely in the division.

Now, the Arizona Diamondbacks are the next-closest team in the standings. But even they remain a whopping 14 games back as the All-Star break nears.

The Dodgers have taken this opportunity to pull away in the division –– with two series against the Padres in the span of two weeks –– and ran with it by winning five of six games so far against their Southern California rivals.

“We’ve got a good team, and we’re playing really good baseball,” Freeman said. “That’s what happens.”

Who’s hot

It was no surprise to see Yamamoto make the All-Star team.

The bigger question now is whether he can make a push for Cy Young contention.

The third-year Japanese right-hander has been pitching at that level over the last couple months, having allowed just nine runs in 54 ⅔ innings in his last eight starts to lower his ERA to 2.49.

That mark is now the sixth-lowest in the National League. His nine wins are also tied for sixth-most.

For now, Yamamoto was simply happy to be selected to the NL team, even though he is unlikely to pitch in the Midsummer Classic with his next outing scheduled for next Saturday (three days before the game).

“I was there and [felt] happiness and honor last year,” Yamamoto said through his interpreter. “I tasted it last year. Going back there is meaningful to me.”

Who’s not

Pages. Not this year.

Last summer, Pages admitted he was “bothered” when he failed to make the All-Star Game, narrowly missing out thanks largely to a late June slump.

Thus, this year, Pages made a point of not paying attention to his All-Star status, even as he ended up beating Michael Harris II to the wire in fan voting for the NL’s final starting outfield spot.

“I’m really proud of the work that I’ve been doing and to have the opportunity,” Pages said in Spanish, before joking that he could only block All-Star talk out so much in recent weeks around his teammates in the clubhouse.

“They’ve been telling me that it was possible that I could make it, that I could be selected, but I always was trying to wait until I was selected. You just don’t know until the end of all the selections.”

Pages has cooled off since his scorching start to the season, hitting just .217 since May 29. Nevertheless, he has remained a key run producer at the top of the Dodgers’ lineup, with his RBI single on Saturday putting him back in a tie for the MLB lead with 63 this year.

Up next

The teams conclude this four-game series with a Sunday Night Baseball showdown, when Emmet Sheehan (4-5, 5.08 ERA) will face Padres left-hander JP Sears (1-1, 6.97 ERA).

World Cup Update: Mbappe Leads France Past Paraguay’s Tactics, Marsch’s Surprising Commentary, Highlights, and Today’s Key Matches

Good morning and welcome to Day 25 of Daily Mail Sport’s World Cup Breakfast — your essential update on everything you might have missed overnight in North America.

Stay tuned right here for the latest news, viral highlights, and what’s ahead in the tournament.

OVERNIGHT ACTION

France 1-0 Paraguay

As temperatures soared above 35°C in New York, France faced a tough challenge, spending over an hour trying to penetrate Paraguay’s solid defense. The breakthrough finally came in the 69th minute when Desire Doue was brought down in the box, leading to a penalty after a VAR check.

With Mbappe poised to take the penalty, the Paraguayan team did their best to distract him, even scuffing the penalty spot. However, their efforts were in vain. Mbappe calmly side-footed the ball into the bottom corner and laughed as he celebrated the goal, leaving the opposition’s attempts futile.

There were cries for a red card after Mbappe appeared to be booted on the floor, pathetic attempts at coercion from the Paraguayans and a splattering of yellow cards – yet the French prevailed in what was their toughest test so far this summer.

Mbappe burst into laughter once more as he strolled off the sun-baked pitch at the MetLife. That’s two down, three to go for France on their quest to lift the World Cup trophy.

VIEW FROM THE GROUND

The World Cup is battling to be heard here today in Philadelphia, the birthplace of the US Constitution, on its 250th anniversary. Thousands have flown in from across the US to be in the cradle of the country for the 4th of July celebrations. Hotel occupancy levels are 90 per cent higher than usual because of that. The anniversary has also shone a light on the country’s divisions. I saw more than 2,000 people marching through downtown Philadelphia this morning, past the hundreds queuing to get into celebrations at Independence Square. They were demanding an end to Donald Trump’s overseas wars.

It seems a happy coincidence that the World Cup has arrived at a time when the US is reflecting on itself and its place in the world. I listened in as Deutsche Welle, the German broadcaster, interviewed people in Independence Square on Friday night. Arnold, a proud American with no great fascination for football, said: ‘We are a divided country but the World Cup has helped. I’ve not heard one person say a bad word about another country and I’ve seen so many people in one place, cheering. We needed some of that.’

CELEBRITY OF THE DAY

It seems as though everyone wants a piece of Cristiano Ronaldo this summer in what is sure to be his farewell tournament with the Portuguese national team.

He’s shared reunions with old friends Luka Modric and James Rodriguez, given interviews to countless reporters and, now, linked up with the one and only Drake.

The rapper – fresh off the release of his ICEMAN album – was spotted performing his signature ‘where she at?’ gesture in Toronto after CR7 slotted home a penalty against Croatia.

And Drizzy later gave Ronaldo a warm welcome to the city at the Portugal team hotel, with the What Did I Miss? hitmaker joking: ‘We are the same height I swear. Vamos!!! my brother @cristiano.’

VIRAL MOMENT OF THE DAY

Canada boss Jesse Marsch has provided some of the most viral content on the pitch at this World Cup, not least his dance down the touchline after his side were awarded a penalty against Qatar in the group stages.

Marsch, sadly, will not be able to provide any more after Canada were beaten 3-0 by Morocco in the last-16 as the co-hosts’ tournament came to an end.

That still did not stop Marsch from grabbing the attention post-match with an interview that raised eyebrows, as the Canada boss declared ‘I’d rather be us than them’, despite Morocco advancing to the quarter-finals.

‘What a privilege our fans have had to root a team on like this,’ Marsch said. ‘[A team] that goes after the game, that doesn’t play defensive, that shows that they can be better.

‘Of course, we have to be in these situations more and more,’ the 52-year-old manager continued. ‘And then we have to find ways to succeed and build on that.

‘I’d rather be us than them! As good as Morocco is, I’d rather be us.’

‘I’m really proud of our guys, we went after the game. They’re hurting right now but I couldn’t be prouder,’ he concluded, before adding a final ‘I thank Canada’ to the reporter.

Marsch’s bold declaration was met by incredulity on FOX, with former US star Landon Donovan revealing his surprise at the Canada boss’ comments.

‘Did he just say he’d rather be Canada than Morocco? Wouldn’t you rather be still in the tournament? I don’t really understand that,’ Donovan said.

Alexi Lalas added: ‘Canada’s going home. Morocco is going on. So, I would rather be a team that won and is going on.’

Elsewhere, fans also highlighted how the bad blood between France and Paraguay carried on after their match. Footage showed Kylian Mbappe refusing to shake the hand of Paraguay’s Orlando Gill post-match, with the goalkeeper responding by throwing the ball at Mbappe.

Mbappe was then seen laughing at the incident, which may have contributed to a post-match scuffle in the centre circle.

STAT OF THE DAY

Mbappe’s penalty against Paraguay, his 19th for Les Bleus at World Cups, meant the Real Madrid man has now scored as many at football’s premium tournament as Thierry Henry, Olivier Giroud, Zinedine Zidane and Karim Benzema.

Mbappe is still only 27. Just let that sink in. The French captain could, fitness permitting, play in another three World Cups.

It’s surely only a matter of time before he overtakes Messi’s all-time World Cup goalscoring record.

THREE THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR TODAY

1) Could England’s clash with Mexico be affected by rain?

In the UK, we don’t even consider the possibility that a football match could be postponed or, dare I say, cancelled due to the rain. No, that embarrassment is spared for cricket and golf.

But, incredibly, the England football team’s biggest game in years tonight in Mexico City – a city with a much hotter climate than London – could be seriously affected by the weather.

A forecast of thunderstorms in the Mexican capital at around 7pm local time on Sunday prompted calls for the fixture to be moved and, for a brief period, it appeared as though it was going to be. Yet, after backlash, FIFA pulled the plug.

And so the Round of 16 clash will go ahead as planned at 1am BST – weather permitting, of course.

2) Could Thomas Tuchel ring the changes against the Mexicans?

The Three Lions’ bid to end 60 years of hurt across the pond has been nowhere near as plain sailing as many had assumed. Tuchel’s men made hard work of their opener against Croatia, couldn’t break down Ghana, failed to beat Panama convincingly and, versus DR Congo, flirted with elimination.

So, should our German boss make changes? And, if so, where?

England’s defence, particularly the two centre-backs, have come under scrutiny thus far and, in the intimidating Azteca, it could be wise to offer John Stones a starting berth in place of one of Ezri Konsa or Marc Guehi.

Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson and Jude Bellingham are near certs in the midfield, as are Noni Madueke on the right and Kane up front, but the other dilemma lies with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon. Neither star has performed at their best, and it remains to be seen which Tuchel will opt for across the Mexican border.

3) Norway to cause a shock?

Erling Haaland has repeatedly played down not only his own, but also Norway’s chances at this World Cup. Prior to the Vikings’ clash with France last week, the blonde behemoth admitted his side would ‘probably not’ beat Les Bleus and then, in a Snapchat post this week, talked down his own chances of winning the Golden Boot.

Yet, quietly, Norway are becoming one of the stories of this World Cup. After qualifying for the knockout stages for the first time ever, the Norwegians overcame a strong Ivory Coast side to set up tonight’s tie with Brazil. With Martin Odegaard, Haaland and the exciting Antonio Nusa in their ranks, don’t be surprised if they cause an upset against the South Americans too.

TODAY’S GAMES

Brazil vs Norway (New Jersey, 9pm, ITV)

It was 24 years before their victory over Japan that Brazil last had to come from behind to win a knockout match. It was also 24 years ago that the Brazilians last lifted the World Cup. A coincidence? That remains to be seen, but Carlo Ancelotti’s men continue their pursuit of football’s most coveted prize against Norway tonight on the outskirts of New York.

The Brazilians, while boasting game-changers up top, haven’t looked completely assured on more than one occasion this tournament and so, for once, do not go into this clash as overwhelming favourites. In bygone years, the outcome of Brazil vs Norway would not have even been a debate.

Haaland (even if he won’t admit it) will be quietly fancying his chances against Marquinhos and his old enemy Gabriel Magalhaes should Odegaard be able to pull the strings behind him. The Man City star, remember, trails Leo Messi and Mbappe by just two in the race for the Golden Boot.

Will the Norwegians be performing their ‘Viking’ celebration after the match? I’m not quite sure, but I think they’ll go close.

Prediction: Brazil win on penalties.

Brazil, for once, should not be considered overwhelming favourites for their clash with Norway

England vs Mexico (Mexico City, 1am, BBC)

Now the drama surrounding England’s kick-off time has at last come to an end, let’s focus on the football and, more specifically, their opponents.

Overcoming the Mexicans will be a formidable task for Tuchel’s men not only because they’re ranked 10th in FIFA’s rankings, but mainly due to their incredible record at the Azteca Stadium. Mexico have lost just two of their last 89 matches at the Mexico City venue, and have won all four of their games there this summer. Sitting more than 7,000 feet above ground level, the cauldron that is the Azteca is a significant leveller for the Mexicans against an English team who would ordinarily be favourites.

The outcome of this one depends on how Tuchel’s men cope with the atmosphere, the heat and the altitude. Marc Guehi claimed earlier today that Mexico head into the clash as favourites, though Daily Mail Sport is backing the Three Lions to get the job done.

Prediction: England win.

Lena Dunham Stuns with Dramatic Weight Loss at Taylor Swift’s Star-Studded Wedding

0

Lena Dunham appeared noticeably slimmer in recent snapshots featuring the designer outfits she donned for Taylor Swift’s wedding festivities held at Madison Square Garden.

At 40 years old, the creator of Girls participated in both the cozy rehearsal dinner catering to 100 guests on Thursday and the grand ceremony followed by a reception for 1,000 attendees on Friday night.

A close friend of the bride, Dunham gave a bold and entertaining speech at the rehearsal dinner, leaving some guests in surprise, as the Daily Mail exclusively reported.

She later joined a star-studded assembly that included icons such as Bradley Cooper, Gigi Hadid, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez, Tom Hanks, Beyonce, and Hugh Grant to witness Swift’s union with NFL player Travis Kelce on Friday.

Recently, her stylist Talia Cassel sparked interest on Instagram by showcasing the personalized ensembles she put together for Dunham to wear at the events.

In both of the custom outfits – one by Christian Cowan and one by Amber Doyle – Dunham’s reduced frame was impossible to miss.

The Daily Mail has contacted Dunham’s representatives for comment.

Cowan’s more formal creation was presumably the one Dunham wore for Friday night’s ceremony, which was officiated by Adam Sandler and featured performances by Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks and Swift herself.

The newlyweds, who had their respective brothers Austin Swift and Jason Kelce as Man of Honor and Best Man, were dressed in Christian Dior Haute Couture.

Dunham’s figure was cinched in by a slimming black floor-length skirt that featured a waistline designed to slightly resemble a cummerbund.

Last year at the height of the Ozempic era, she bewailed the decline of the body positivity movement, which she said was ‘here, and then it was gone,’ via Variety.

‘I obviously am not critical of anybody’s choice, whether it’s to use Ozempic – people should be allowed to have whatever body they feel comfortable in,’ she said.

‘But we cannot pretend that the bodies people want aren’t influenced, and we can’t claim it’s always for health reasons and not for aesthetic reasons.’

Her fluctuating size has been a lightning rod of public conversation ever since she shot to fame in 2012 on her self-created series Girls, featuring numerous sex scenes in which Dunham exposed her physique on camera.

She attributed her weight gain in recent years both to sobriety and to her raft of medical issues, including endometriosis that led in 2017 to a total hysterectomy with ovarian removal, which in turn resulted in early menopause.

In 2019, she raved on Instagram that she was ‘the happiest I’ve ever been,’ having allowed herself to relax and ‘weigh the most I ever have.’

She has been married since late 2021 to the musician Luis Felber, whom she first met on a blind date near the beginning of that year.

Swift’s wedding presented the risk Dunham might have an awkward run-in with her ex Jack Antonoff, a longstanding friend and co-writer of the bride.

The discomfiture of the potential encounter might have been amplified by the fact Dunham had just presented a scathing account of their romance in her new memoir Famesick, which soared to the top of the New York Times bestseller list.
