Tom Suozzi Urges Democrats to Dispel Unpatriotic Perceptions

0

The Democratic Party is facing a significant image challenge that requires immediate attention, according to Rep. Tom Suozzi. In a recent op-ed, Suozzi underscored the urgent need to address the widespread notion that Democrats lack patriotism.

In a compelling article for The Wall Street Journal, Suozzi (D-NY) expressed, “I love America. Dishearteningly, as we commemorate our country’s 250th anniversary, far too many Americans connect those words solely with Republicans.”

“Democrats must work to alter this perception,” he asserted.

Suozzi also highlighted a range of criticisms towards President Trump and expressed concerns about the “current direction” of the United States.

He elaborated, “Under President Trump, we have not adequately addressed income inequality. There have been instances where masked agents have clashed with U.S. citizens. Moreover, our electoral process and voting rights are under siege, while misinformation spreads unchecked amid rising bigotry, extremism, and political violence,” he stated.

The congressman, however, urged those frustrated with the country’s direction not to let their concerns dampen their patriotism.

“Despite all this, we should remain fiercely proud of the American system,” Suozzi continued. “It has enabled the quest for ‘a more perfect union’, making possible the abolition of slavery, the rights of women and black Americans to vote, the protection of civil rights, the confrontation of religious, ethnic and racial bigotry and so much more.”

He said patriotism doesn’t ask Americans “to whitewash the country’s shortcomings,” but to confront them while recognizing the ability “to correct our mistakes” in the US democratic system to make America better.

“Democrats have long believed that America is great not because it is perfect, but because it has the capacity to become better. We must reclaim the language of patriotism, because our history teaches us that the most American thing any of us can do is help our great nation live up to the ideals charted by our Founders 250 years ago: liberty, equality, democracy and the rule of law.,” Suozzi wrote.

“Patriotism,” the congressman added, “means recognizing that America has been a force for good.”

Suozzi cited the American Revolution and how it “fueled struggles for independence, democracy and self-determination from Europe to Latin America.”

“Two and a half centuries later, America is still a beacon,” he said.

“Patriotism doesn’t demand blind loyalty,” Suozzi argued. “It demands faith that our country is worth improving and confidence that our ideals are worth defending.”

Some recent surveys show that Democrats are less patriotic than Republicans.

Just 18% of self-described Democrats said they felt “proud” to be an American compared to 68% of Republicans, according to an Elon University poll released last month.

A separate recent Reuters/Ipsos survey found 64% of Republicans said they would display an American flag or flag bunting outside their home this July 4, compared with just 27% of Democrats.

Meanwhile, Dariliaza Avila Chevaier, the socialist who won the Democratic primary in House District 13 covering northern Manhattan and The Bronx, once boasted on social media, “I forgot to get napkins so I just wiped my hand on the American flag behind me.”

Suozzi, a former Nassau County executive and gubernatorial candidate who represents the swing 3rd district covering parts of Long Island and Queens, faces a tough re-election battle from Republican Michael Lipetri, a former state assemblyman.

It’s a rematch. Suozzi defeated Lipetri by only 3 percentage points in 2024, when President Trump carried the district over Democrat Kamala Harris, the former vice president.

Lipetri told The Post that Suozzi is trying to desperately distance himself from “American-hating communists” in his own party, and his own voting record, by talking about patriotism.

“Talk is cheap. This is just another example of Tom Suozzi saying whatever it takes to save himself,” Lipetri said.

“Whether it’s voter ID, mass amnesty and open borders, keeping boys in girls’ sports, or tax increases, he flips and votes exactly with the America-hating communists in his own party.”

Suozzi quit Congress in 2022 to run governor, losing to Kathy Hochul in the Democratic primary.

But he won the seat back in a special election in Feburary 2024 after convicted fraudster, Republlican Rep. George Santos, was expelled from Congress. He won re-election that fall against Lipetri in a squeaker.

“We should reject both the politics of resentment on the right and ideological purity on the left,” Suozzi’s op-ed continued. “Americans are looking for practical solutions, not endless culture wars or litmus tests.”

According to the congressman, “the choice Democrats face is clear.”

“We can allow patriotism to become a partisan label, or we can reclaim a tradition that rightly belongs to every American.”

Unlocking July 2026: Your Ultimate Guide to Pay, Tax, Super & Free Electricity Changes

0

This month marks the beginning of a fresh financial year in Australia, bringing significant changes in wages, taxes, superannuation, parental leave, and more. Both federal and state reforms have been rolled out, impacting a wide array of areas in daily life.

Every year, this time ushers in new regulations and legislation. However, this year’s adjustments are poised to particularly influence earnings, retirement planning, family expenses, and how businesses are run.

Several notable updates are now in effect, affecting many aspects of everyday life.

Three hours of free power

One of the significant changes includes an initiative for select families in New South Wales, South Australia, and southeast Queensland. They can now access three hours of free electricity each day through the federal government’s Solar Sharer Offer.

Households wanting to take advantage of this offer do not need solar panels on their roofs. However, they must have a smart meter installed and sign up through a retailer participating in the program.

Millions of workers to receive a pay rise

Millions of Australians covered by awards will receive higher pay after the Fair Work Commission approved a 4.75 per cent increase to minimum and award wages earlier this month.

The National Minimum Wage will rise to $26.44 an hour, equivalent to $1,004.90 a week based on a 38-hour week before tax.

The increase applies from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July.

Around 2.8 million employees paid under modern awards are expected to benefit, alongside workers who receive the national minimum wage.

Superannuation to be paid at the same time as wages

One of the biggest structural changes taking effect from today is the introduction of payday super.

From today, employers are required to pay employees’ superannuation contributions at the same time as wages, rather than quarterly.

The change is designed to reduce unpaid and delayed super and make retirement savings easier for workers to track.

James Koval, chief policy and advocacy officer at the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia, said the reform would affect around 19 million Australians with super accounts.

“What it will mean is that millions of people have a higher balance at retirement simply because they’ll be receiving their superannuation payments earlier and more frequently,” he said.

Supporters argue more frequent contributions could improve long-term balances through compounding returns, particularly for younger workers.

Koval said the reform could also help workers identify unpaid super sooner by making it easier to compare contributions arriving in their account against their payslip.

Business groups have welcomed the intent of the reform but warned the transition may create operational and cashflow challenges, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses.

Koval said while some businesses may face an adjustment period, the reform had been planned for several years and did not increase the amount employers pay, only how often payments are made.

“We think there might be a few teething issues early, but it’s still a substantial improvement because it means that for millions of Australians, they’ll be getting super more frequently.”

The concessional contributions cap will also increase from $30,000 to $32,500.

Price gouging laws

Very large supermarkets, including Coles and Woolworths, are banned from charging excessive prices from today.

The laws will be enforced by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, with retailers that breach them facing penalties of up to $10 million.

Some experts have questioned how effective the laws will be, arguing it may be difficult to determine what counts as a “significantly excessive” price or a “reasonable margin”.

Tax, super and government payment settings also change

Australians are also seeing changes to tax settings, superannuation limits and some government payment thresholds from 1 July.

Tax changes

The lowest marginal tax rate has been reduced from 16 per cent to 15 per cent for taxable income between $18,201 and $45,000, delivering tax relief to millions of workers.

A $1,000 instant tax deduction for work-related expenses has also been locked in for the 2026-27 financial year, replacing the previous $300 limit on receipt-free deductions. It does not apply to 2025-26 tax returns lodged from 1 July 2026.

Other tax changes recently passed by parliament include changes to capital gains tax and negative gearing, although those measures are due to take effect later.

Government payments and thresholds

Some Centrelink payment thresholds and limits have increased through regular indexation from 1 July.

For families receiving Family Tax Benefit Part A and Part B, maximum payment rates will rise, while income and asset thresholds for payments including the Age Pension and Disability Support Pension will also change.

Medicare Levy Surcharge thresholds increase

The income thresholds at which the Medicare Levy Surcharge kicks in have increased from 1 July — to $105,000 for singles and $210,000 for families.

The surcharge applies to higher-income earners who do not hold eligible private hospital cover and is paid in addition to the standard Medicare levy.

Super contribution caps increase

Alongside the shift to payday super, Australians can also contribute more to superannuation before attracting additional tax.

The concessional contributions cap, which covers pre-tax contributions including employer super and salary sacrifice, has increased from $30,000 to $32,500 annually.

The non-concessional contributions cap for after-tax contributions has also increased from $120,000 to $130,000, while the general transfer balance cap will rise from $2 million to $2.1 million.

Koval said the higher contribution caps may be particularly useful for Australians approaching retirement.

“For people who might be in their late 50s or early 60s and really putting thought into how they can have the most comfortable retirement possible, these changes can be really positive.”

He said the increased caps may create more opportunity for Australians to make concessional top-up contributions and strengthen retirement savings before leaving the workforce.

The government has also proposed additional tax changes for Australians with very large super balances. Under the proposal, earnings linked to super balances above $3 million would face a higher tax rate, although implementation remains dependent on legislation and commencement arrangements.

Paid parental leave expands

Families welcoming children from today can gain access to expanded government-funded parental leave.

Paid parental leave has increased from 120 days to 130 days, equivalent to 26 weeks under a standard five-day working week.

Partner leave entitlements have also increased from 15 to 20 reserved days.

The changes apply to children born or adopted from 1 July.

The expansion forms part of a staged increase aimed at supporting workforce participation and giving families greater flexibility in sharing care responsibilities.

New anti-scam protections for text messages

Australians may now notice changes to how branded text messages appear on their phones under new anti-scam protections.

Businesses using branded sender IDs are required to register those identifiers.

Messages sent using unregistered sender IDs may appear as “Unverified” and separately from verified business communications as part of efforts to reduce impersonation scams.

The reforms are designed to make it harder for scammers to imitate trusted organisations.

Other confirmed national changes

Businesses selling seafood now have to provide clearer country-of-origin information to help consumers better understand where their food comes from.

At the same time, Australian Securities and Investments Commission business and company registration fees have increased under updated annual pricing arrangements.

Meanwhile, eligible small businesses will continue to have access to instant asset write-off arrangements for qualifying purchases below the $20,000 threshold.

Consumers in jurisdictions covered by the National Energy Customer Framework now receive stronger protections before electricity disconnection, with the minimum debt threshold increasing.

Across the country: What else is changing?

NSW

A staged transition toward mandatory food organics and garden organics (FOGO) recycling now begins, initially targeting larger waste generators.

New anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing obligations also begin applying to additional professional sectors.

A pair of hands holding an assortment of Australian cash

Victoria

Victorian renters gain access to a portable rental bond scheme designed to allow existing bonds to transfer between rental properties.

Electricity reference prices are also set to fall.

Queensland

New child safety reporting requirements will apply to organisations working with children.

Queensland also introduces new e-mobility rules targeting high-risk e-bike and e-scooter behaviour.

Western Australia

WA residents see an expanded container deposit scheme and access to fuel support measures announced by the state government.

South Australia

Eligibility for the Seniors Card has been expanded to include more residents, regardless of work hours.

ACT and Tasmania

Property-related changes, including stamp duty settings and first-home buyer arrangements, take effect in the ACT and Tasmania from 1 July.

Massachusetts Enforces Curfew in Anticipation of Historic World Cup Match

0

A city in Massachusetts, known for housing one of the largest Cape Verdean communities in the United States, has set a temporary curfew in anticipation of Friday’s significant World Cup match between the West African nation and Argentina.

This curfew will be enforced in Brockton, which is located just south of Boston, running from 10 p.m. on Friday evening until 5 a.m. Saturday morning.

City leaders explained that this measure comes in response to recent World Cup events where celebrations escalated into risky and illegal actions.

According to city officials, past World Cup festivities have resulted in several incidents, including reckless driving, unauthorized street congregations, vandalism, assaults, illegal fireworks, disorderly behavior, and other criminal offenses.

Brockton is home to one of the largest Cape Verdean communities in the United States, with nearly one in four residents identifying as Cape Verdean, according to local outlet The Enterprise.

Friday’s match was expected to draw large celebrations, as the 2026 tournament marks the first time the African island nation has qualified for the FIFA World Cup.

Following previous World Cup matches, Brockton police said several people were injured in shootings that erupted during postgame celebrations, according to local outlet Boston 25 News — prompting city officials to impose the temporary curfew ahead of Friday’s matchup.

Under the curfew order, no one will be permitted to enter establishments serving alcohol after 7 p.m.

Patrons already inside will be allowed to remain until 10 p.m., but “last calls” for alcoholic beverages must end by 9:30 p.m.

The city said only limited exceptions to the curfew will be permitted.

Such cases include law enforcement officers and other first responders, individuals traveling directly to or from lawful employment, those seeking medical care, and those responding to emergencies.

Brockton officials described the measure as a public safety measure intended to preserve public order.

“The purpose of this curfew is to protect public safety, reduce criminal activity associated with post-match celebrations, and enable police, fire, and emergency personnel to effectively maintain order and respond to emergencies,” the city said.

“Residents and visitors are urged to celebrate responsibly, obey all laws, avoid unlawful gatherings, and cooperate with public safety officials to ensure that all World Cup celebrations remain peaceful and safe.”

Transform Your Midsection: 5 Standing Exercises to Rapidly Reduce Belly Pooch After 60

If you’re seeking effective ways to tackle that stubborn belly pooch after turning 60, consider incorporating these five full-body standing exercises into your routine.

>

Pilates is an excellent way to enhance body awareness, posture, mobility, and core strength. However, standing exercises can further elevate your routine, especially when targeting the lower belly. By involving a broader range of muscles, these exercises keep the session dynamic and optimize your body’s training response by engaging legs, hips, shoulders, and core.

As a coach for adults over 60 aiming for body-composition goals, my priority is selecting exercises that provide quick and noticeable benefits. The most effective exercises engage large muscle groups, keep you upright, and offer an athletic yet controlled pace. Incorporating a few well-chosen standing movements can make your home workout feel significantly more productive than spending extended periods on isolated abdominal work.

The appearance of a belly pooch is closely linked to overall body composition. Engaging in strength training not only aids in preserving and building lean muscle but also supports regular movement, which increases daily energy expenditure. Standing exercises are particularly beneficial as they keep your core engaged, while your legs and upper body do most of the heavy lifting.

This workout blends bodyweight intervals with dumbbell and medicine-ball exercises for a full-body session that remains invigorating throughout. Some movements are designed to elevate your heart rate, while others focus on building strength. Every exercise requires your midsection to maintain balance and organization. Aim to complete this circuit two to four times a week, complementing it with regular walks and supportive nutritional habits for the best results.

5 Chair Exercises Trainers Now Recommend to Restore Thigh Muscle After 60

Dumbbell Ski Swings

Dumbbell ski swings train your glutes, hamstrings, shoulders, upper back, and core through a full-body hinge pattern. Your hips drive the movement while your abs keep your torso steady, and your shoulders guide the dumbbells through the swing. The faster rhythm adds a conditioning element without needing to jump. Start with light dumbbells and make every rep smooth.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, hamstrings, shoulders, upper back, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Brace your core and soften your knees.
  3. Push your hips back as the dumbbells swing behind your body.
  4. Drive your hips forward to bring the dumbbells toward chest height.
  5. Keep your arms long and your shoulders relaxed.
  6. Return to the hinge position and repeat with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Kettlebell swings, bodyweight hip hinges, slow-tempo ski swings.

Form Tip: Let your hips create the power instead of lifting the dumbbells with your arms.

Low-Impact Skater Steps

Low-impact skater steps train your glutes, thighs, calves, outer hips, and core while adding a steady cardiovascular challenge. The side-to-side movement wakes up muscles that often get less attention during straight-ahead walking. Each step also asks your trunk to stay tall as your weight shifts from one leg to the other. Keep the motion light and rhythmic.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, outer hips, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Step your right foot out to the side.
  3. Sweep your left foot behind your body as you bend your right knee slightly.
  4. Push through your right foot and travel to the other side.
  5. Bring your right foot behind you as your left leg takes the load.
  6. Continue moving side to side at a steady pace.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 20 to 30 seconds. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Smaller skater steps, skater steps with a reach, slow-tempo skater steps.

Form Tip: Land softly and keep your knees tracking in the same direction as your toes.

The 7-Day Morning Stretch Challenge That Restores Mobility After 60

Dumbbell Push Press

The dumbbell push press targets your shoulders, triceps, legs, and core in a single efficient rep. A shallow dip through the knees helps create momentum, then your upper body finishes the press overhead. This blend of lower-body drive and upper-body strength makes the movement a strong fit for a full-body routine. Keep the dumbbells light enough to press with clean control.

Muscles Trained: Shoulders, triceps, upper chest, quadriceps, glutes, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height.
  2. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Bend your knees slightly.
  4. Drive through your feet as you press the dumbbells overhead.
  5. Straighten your arms at the top.
  6. Lower the dumbbells back to your shoulders with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Single-arm push presses, standing dumbbell presses, band push presses.

Form Tip: Keep your ribs stacked over your hips as the dumbbells travel overhead.

Reverse Lunge to Knee Drive

Reverse lunges to knee drives build your glutes, thighs, hips, and core while adding a quick balance challenge at the top of each rep. The reverse step keeps the movement controlled, and the knee drive adds a more athletic finish without requiring jumping. Your standing leg must generate force while your core keeps your torso upright. Bodyweight works well, and light dumbbells can add progression later.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, hip flexors, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Step one foot back into a reverse lunge.
  3. Lower your back knee toward the floor with control.
  4. Press through your front foot to stand.
  5. Drive your back knee forward toward hip height.
  6. Return your foot to the floor and repeat before switching sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per side. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Assisted reverse lunges, bodyweight reverse lunges, dumbbell reverse lunges.

Form Tip: Pause briefly at the top of the knee drive, keeping your standing foot rooted.

4 Gentle Exercises That Build Shoulder Strength Better Than Heavy Lifting After 60

Medicine Ball Slams

Medicine ball slams train your abs, lats, shoulders, hips, glutes, and legs while adding a burst of power to the workout. The ball starts overhead, then your full body works together to drive it into the floor. Your core connects the upper- and lower-body effort, which makes each rep feel powerful and organized. Use a soft ball designed for slamming and reset your stance between reps.

Muscles Trained: Abs, lats, shoulders, upper back, glutes, hips, legs.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a medicine ball with both hands.
  2. Brace your core and raise the ball overhead.
  3. Reach tall while keeping your ribs stacked.
  4. Drive the ball down toward the floor with force.
  5. Hinge slightly as the ball reaches the ground.
  6. Pick up the ball safely and repeat.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 6 to 10 reps. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Low-impact ball slams, side slams, scoop slams, lighter-ball slams.

Form Tip: Use your hips and abs to power the slam rather than relying solely on your arms.

How to Use Standing Exercises for a Leaner Waistline After 60

A stronger routine for waistline goals combines full-body strength, short bursts of conditioning, and enough consistency to keep building momentum. These five moves work well as a circuit because each one brings a different demand while keeping your core involved.

  • Move through the exercises in order: Complete one set of each move, then rest for 60 to 90 seconds before starting the next round.
  • Start with two rounds: Build toward three or four rounds as your strength and conditioning improve.
  • Keep the weights manageable: Dumbbells and medicine balls should feel challenging yet allow smooth, steady reps.
  • Use the bodyweight moves to keep the pace up: Skater steps and reverse lunge to knee drives add movement without needing extra equipment.
  • Build daily activity around the workout: Walking, errands, active hobbies, and regular movement breaks support the full-body work you put in here.

A leaner midsection after 60 responds well to workouts that make the whole body participate. Train your legs, hips, shoulders, and core together, keep the sessions repeatable, and let steady effort build the result.

Taylor and Travis’s Wedding Becomes an Unexpected Extravaganza of Commercialization

0

An event once heralded as the American equivalent of a royal wedding has swiftly morphed into a lucrative opportunity.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, criticized for their ‘tacky’ choice of Madison Square Garden for their wedding celebration, are leveraging the occasion to boost podcasts and create fresh content for their devoted fans.

Those in the couple’s inner circle seized the limelight on Thursday to market their own ventures amidst the excitement on the closed-off streets of midtown Manhattan.

The groom used his social media platform to draw attention to his New Heights podcast, hinting at a ‘very special guest’ scheduled to appear on the show ‘TOMORROW’.

Reported bridesmaid Selena Gomez turned heads in a striking black feathered ballgown, while simultaneously promoting her Rare Beauty brand by applying lipstick during her journey to the event.

Swift’s longtime friend Lena Dunham was one of the only celebrities to make sure she was seen outside the heavily guarded venue, with the actress rolling down the window her blacked out SUV as she arrived at the party.

And to top to it all off, the bride confiscated phones at the event’s entrance to ensure that her cameras were the only ones rolling.

Swift and Kelce hosted a pre-party at the Infosys Theater inside arena on Thursday night, slated for just 100 guests.

Reports ran wild that the pair may already be legally married. Some sources said they intended to exchange vows in front of 100 of their nearest and dearest on Thursday, before a blowout, festival-style party tomorrow.

Neither they, nor their guests, have confirmed what happened behind the closed doors.

They hung curtains on the arena’s gargantuan windows and erected an arrivals tent which blocked the public’s view of who was there.

A sign at a security checkpoint outside the venue instructed guests to ‘have identification out, have devices ready,’ suggesting attendees were forced to give up their phones before entering.

Press were told to leave the area, with cops heard saying: ‘It’s managed access. That means unless you have a business on the block, you gotta go to the corner.’

‘Either you gotta move or they’ll start arresting people for trespassing,’ an officer told journalists who refused to go to the designated press pen.

K9 units were spotted patrolling the perimeter of the arena, with the National Guard, as well as members of Swift’s own security team, seen in the area earlier this week.

A total of 139 officers have been assigned to oversee the monster bash, including five lieutenants and 14 sergeants, according to the Daily Mail’s sources. Over 1,000 guests are expected to attend on Friday, with celebrations running into the early hours.

Security posts around MSG were erected earlier this week and special ‘cooling stations’ have been set up to allow cops periods of air-conditioning.

The big day is set to feature a castle being built inside the iconic stadium. Crews were also seen hauling trees and other shrubbery, as well as a box marked ‘golf.’

A full street closure will then go into effect, allowing crews to erect a ‘drive through tent’ next to a separate ‘entrance tent,’ according to a special event permit

Another notice on display outside the arena states that photography and videography will take place in and around the area from June 29 to July 3.

Swift’s crews have been setting up for her nuptials to Kelce all week, with the new notice suggesting that cameras may have been documenting the entire process.

Exclusive photographs obtained by the Daily Mail captured professional monitors, camera rigs and high-end production equipment being loaded through the arena’s loading bay in the lead up to her big day.

The singer, who has multiple ties with Disney, is no stranger to turning her life – or her relationships – into a cinematic spectacle.

In 2020, she released her Miss Americana documentary on Netflix which offered fans intimate details of her life on and off the stage.

Then, after her record breaking Eras tour, Swift released a feature-length concert film and sic part docuseries about the tour, highlighting her dubbing romance with Kelce.

She has also debuted multiple self-produced visual albums – each one owned outright by her, released on her timeline, and monetized on her terms.

Sources say Swift turned down offers worth tens of millions of dollars from streaming giants who wanted to broadcast the ceremony live.

The wedding footage, insiders say, will be hers alone to edit, release, and profit from however and whenever she chooses.

Swift and Kelce have faced massive scrutiny over the luxurious event and the disruption it is causing to America’s largest city over the holiday weekend.

During what seemed to be just another routine exploration, Quinn Brown stumbled upon what can only be described as the thrift store discovery of a lifetime.

PORTLAND, Ore. — For 19-year-old Quinn Brown, rummaging through the pay-by-the-pound bins at Goodwill Outlet stores becomes an exhilarating quest.

“It’s an adventure akin to a treasure hunt,” Brown remarked.

In a remarkable find last January, Brown pulled from a heap of forgotten apparel a Los Angeles Lakers warm-up jacket. This item was later verified to have been worn by the legendary Wilt Chamberlain during the iconic 1972 NBA Finals.

“I noticed someone else inspecting it before discarding it back into the bin,” Brown shared with KGW. “I quickly seized it, not realizing its full significance at that moment, but sensing it was indeed extraordinary.”

Just how special became clear after authentication experts determined Chamberlain wore the jacket during the Lakers’ 1972 championship run. The jacket is up for auction at Sotheby’s beginning Wednesday and is expected to sell for between $150,000 and $250,000.

Brown has spent the past three years searching thrift stores and reselling vintage clothing. Before this find, the most he had made on a single item was $250 for a vintage T-shirt. He postponed his freshman year of college to pursue reselling full time, spending long hours digging through outlet bins in search of valuable items.

“I obviously never expected finding anything even a hundredth of what this ended up being worth,” Brown said. “People put in a lot of hours to find something like this.”

Seasoned collectors were equally stunned by Brown’s discovery, including Troy Douglass, owner of Back to the Basket, a Southeast Portland shop specializing in vintage basketball memorabilia.

“I think he kind of hit the lottery, so to speak. Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars is crazy,” Douglass said. “If he’s the one out there pulling up to the outlets every day early in the morning, good for him. Hard work does pay off.”

How the historic piece of memorabilia ended up at Goodwill remains a mystery. Brown said the only clue is a dry-cleaning tag that was still attached to the jacket.

“So somewhere from the dry cleaners, somebody forgot it,” Brown said. “Something like that, but there’s nothing concrete.”

The Sotheby’s auction opened Wednesday and is scheduled to close July 20.

Sophia Bush Expresses Embarrassment Over Jerry O’Connell’s Dolphin Act in Upcoming Film

The movie-making process isn’t always filled with glitz and glamour, and actress Sophia Bush can certainly attest to that.

“I spent that day mortified from a distance,” the 43-year-old actress recounted to Us Weekly in an exclusive interview, referring to a particular scene in her latest film, Summer’s Last Resort. “I’ve never been more thankful to remain just an onlooker during a shoot.”

In the Tubi film, Bush plays Milly, starring alongside Jerry O’Connell and Violet McGraw, who portray her boyfriend and daughter, respectively. The movie follows their attempts to bond on an adventurous tropical getaway. The memorable scene in question features O’Connell, 52, and McGraw, 15, humorously attempting to save a dolphin, while Bush’s character observes the chaos unfold.

Talking about the comical dolphin scenes, O’Connell, who is the father of 17-year-old twins Charlie and Dolly with his wife Rebecca Romijn, quipped to Us, “I was doing things with the dolphin that would completely embarrass [Violet], as well as my own daughters. I really embraced it. Honestly, I’m terrified of my daughters—I’m scared even to mention them. But on the set of Summer’s Last Resort, I could finally indulge in the antics I hold back from doing at home because Violet was there, doing her job, and I got to join in.”

McGraw shared that the scenes involving the dolphins stood out as particularly unforgettable for her. “Working with the dolphins was undoubtedly the most memorable experience for me,” she said.

The movie is action-packed and filled with physical comedy, so it should come as no surprise that the dolphin scene wasn’t the only behind-the-scenes moment that pushed some boundaries.

“There really was a moment where I was like, I don’t know how long we should stay here,” Bush recalled of things getting chaotic during a “big” fire scene. “I think I’m going to remove her now and save us both? And we made it.”

But O’Connell didn’t come out of that one unscathed.

Are the best things in life free? Maybe, but it depends on the time of the year – and which streaming platform you’re using. While Netflix and HBO Max continue to raise their subscription prices, ad-supported streamers like Tubi, YouTube and Pluto TV continue to offer content that doesn’t cost a dime. In June, these […]

“I get nose hairs. Hairs grow out of my nose. It’s my family tree. My dad gets them, his father got them, I have them. My daughters will get them someday. When we were shooting that scene, I was 20 feet behind these two next to the fire, and I took a breath in, and my nose hairs… I could feel them burn,” he told Us. “I didn’t have to use [my trimmer] for like two weeks because that’s how hot it was.”

Admittedly, that wasn’t the actor’s only nasal incident on set. He joked that he “singed all my nose hairs” once again after catching a whiff of sardines on the dolphin’s breath.

“I kissed the dolphin and, I’m not kidding, no offense to dolphins, their breath the worst,” O’Connell said. “It’s just sardine breath, like in your face, and they have no concert of blow hole and mouth and everything. They think everyone wants to be near them.”

At the end of the day, the heart of the movie rests on the mother-daughter relationship between Milly and Summer, McGraw’s character.

“It was just kind of easy because she felt like my mom in real life and took such great care of me,” McGraw told Us of working with Bush.

For her part, the One Tree Hill alum added, “We’re playing a mother and daughter, but we’re also playing friends. It’s a really interesting dynamic. … We’re all very tight, and I think that grew naturally between us, but also for all of us as a group, because we were essentially at summer camp.”

She concluded: “We just had so much fun.”

Summer’s Last Resort premieres exclusively on Tubi Friday, July 3.

How the ‘Legally Blonde’ Prequel Series Cast Bonded with Elle Woods-Approved Methods During Filming

During production, the cast of “Elle,” the prequel to “Legally Blonde,” indulged in a unique bonding exercise that brought them closer.

Danielle Chand revealed to Page Six that the group gathered in the room of the film’s lead actress, Lexi Minetree, to watch “Legally Blonde.”

“Watching the movie with Lexi was a delightful experience,” Chand shared about the beloved 2001 film. “She was familiar with every line! It turns out she’s seen the film around 150 times. We were all completely engrossed and thoroughly enjoying ourselves.”

Currently available on Prime Video, “Elle” carries the creative mark of Reese Witherspoon as an executive producer.

The series delves into the teenage life of the iconic character Elle Woods, originally portrayed by Witherspoon, during the mid-‘90s. The storyline unfolds around her family navigating a big move from Los Angeles to Seattle.

Minetree stars as the teen version of Elle.

Chand plays Shannon, a popular girl at Elle’s new school. Although Elle is the ultimate confident sorority girl in “Legally Blonde,” in “Elle,” the title character thinks Shannon is the coolest, and is desperate to befriend her.

While the other students scoff at Elle, Shannon is the only one who is nice to her.

“Me and Shannon have a lot in common in terms of just being very welcoming and being very cheery,” said Chand.

“Being new anywhere is scary and I always want to be a nice, welcoming face for anyone,” she explained. “So when I saw that that was how Elle and Shannon met, I was like, ‘perfect!’”

The show is Chand’s first major role.

The Canadian actress told Page Six she was in acting class when she got the call she’d landed the role.

“I ran outside because I wanted to take the call alone, because I didn’t know what was going to be on the other end of that phone call,” she recounted. “And then as soon as [my agent] told me that I booked it, I ran back inside with my class, and we did one big group hug, and I just was bawling my eyes out.”

It’s also a posthumous role for James Van Der Beek, as the “Dawson’s Creek” alum filmed it before his death at 48 from cancer in February.

“I didn’t get to meet James Vander Beek,” Chand said. “But I’m really glad that he was able to be a part of the show and that his legacy will live on.”

She continued: “And everyone who did talk to him and got to meet him, they told me that he was just a delight to work with.”

The show has already been renewed for a Season 2, but Season 1 leaves Shannon’s future uncertain.

When asked whether she’ll be in Season 2, Chand told Page Six, “You’ll have to wait and find out.”

Kamala Harris Urged to Stand Firm Against Extremism Within Her Own Party

0

A note to Kamala Harris: Your role is to challenge the radical elements within your party, not to placate them.

Recent reports reveal that the former vice president and unsuccessful 2024 presidential hopeful is seeking an alliance with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in an effort to revitalize her political career.

Just three years ago, Mamdani was a vocal activist, using a bullhorn to confront Chuck Schumer over his stance on Israel.

(Despite this, Schumer wasn’t exactly a champion for Israel, as he was focused on efforts to unseat Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.)

Now, Mamdani stands as a key figure in the Democratic Party. Although he won his position by a slim margin in a three-candidate race and has only been in office for a few months, he has transformed New York City into a platform for his brand of “democratic socialism” — a contradiction, as no government can dominate an economy without curtailing its citizens’ ability to self-govern.

Mamdani has endorsed fellow socialists in Democratic Party primaries — and they have defeated long-term incumbents. Not just in New York City, but in Colorado as well.

Democratic presidential hopefuls see which way the wind is blowing.

After Mamdani’s team won several races, Gov. Gavin Newsom came out in favor of a nationwide “billionaire tax.” Billionaire Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who slammed Mamdani last year for attacking billionaires, has softened his tone, even praising Mamdani for his sense of “fight.” Ro Khanna, who represents Silicon Valley, has come out as a full-throated, Israel-hating radical.

And Harris is looking for support, hinting that she will support his position on “Palestine.”

Harris appears to buy the left-wing line that the reason she lost to Donald Trump in 2024 was because President Joe Biden had not been tough on Israel. Biden gave Palestinians hundreds of millions of dollars, and denied some arms to Israel, but that wasn’t enough, the radicals say.

They are right about one thing: Biden’s stance hurt — because he was indecisive, not because he was pro-Israel. His weakness only invited further aggression from Iran and its proxies.

Harris also seems to think that she lost because she was barely given 100 days to mount a campaign. But she didn’t have to run. She’s the one who cleared the field after Biden quit.

How often did we hear that Trump had to stand up to the extremists on the right?

He did. Now it’s Kamala’s turn.

Harrowing Mid-Air Attack: DOJ Reveals Mexican National’s Attempted Stabbing with DIY Pen Knife on Las Vegas Flight

On Thursday, a Mexican national who acquired lawful permanent residency in 2018 confessed to his crime in court. He admitted to binding three pens with hair ties and attempting to stab a fellow passenger “through the eye to reach his brain” during a flight from Seattle to Las Vegas, federal authorities reported.

The shocking incident erupted roughly 30 minutes before the aircraft’s scheduled landing in Las Vegas. Julio Alvarez Lopez purportedly got up from his seat, headed to the restroom, and upon return, commenced to attack a passenger seated diagonally from him with punches and jabs, as outlined in a federal criminal complaint accessed by News Media.

Witnesses shared with investigators that the scene was drenched in blood while the victim’s wife frantically urged Lopez to cease the assault on her husband. Amid the chaos, the complaint notes she was hit as she tried to protect their 7-year-old son.

Following the assault, Lopez reportedly proceeded toward the front of the plane, asserting repeatedly, “I’ll only talk to the FBI,” as he strode up the aisle, according to an eyewitness account provided to investigators.

A makeshift pen knife assembled from a razor blade and pen barrel, reportedly found on an Alaska Airlines flight.

A sworn law enforcement officer aboard the flight ordered Lopez to sit down before flight attendants provided flex cuffs and passengers restrained him for the remainder of the flight, according to the complaint.

The flight landed safely at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, where officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department took Lopez into custody.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada, Lopez pleaded guilty to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon stemming from the Jan. 24, 2024, attack.

During an interview with FBI agents and after waiving his Miranda rights, Lopez admitted he made the weapon before boarding the aircraft by bundling three pens together with hair bands.

Investigators said Lopez told them he believed the victim, identified in court documents as C.R., had been following him during the flight. Lopez also said he believed C.R. “was the Cartel” and that he was trying to get him to stop following him.

The complaint further states Lopez told investigators he had never seen C.R. before the flight but, “planned on attacking and killing him.”

According to investigators, Lopez admitted he intended to kill the victim by stabbing him in the eye.

“I planned on attacking and killing him,” Lopez told investigators, according to the complaint.

Lopez also admitted to investigators he was trying to stab C.R. “through the eye to reach C.R.’s brain to kill him.”

According to prosecutors, the victim suffered injuries to his body and eye area that required stitches.

Court documents say witnesses noticed Lopez acting strangely before the attack. One passenger told investigators Lopez appeared “fidgety,” repeatedly put gloves on and took them off, got into his backpack several times and avoided making eye contact with other passengers.

A witness described Lopez as having “gray/white hair tied in a bun on the top of his head,” and wearing a sweatshirt at the time.

Another witness said Lopez stood up twice as the aircraft began descending into Las Vegas, went to the restroom, then returned to his seat before suddenly launching the attack.

The complaint also states Lopez told investigators he was seeking asylum in the United States and believed the mafia had been chasing him for several months.

Lopez is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 22.
