Clay Aiken Reveals Emotional Impact of Kelly Ripa Dispute: A Week That Changed Everything

Reflecting on a controversial TV moment, Clay Aiken recently opened up about his infamous encounter with Kelly Ripa, where he placed his hand over her mouth during a 2006 episode of “Live with Regis and Kelly.” This incident, which transpired on air, has lingered in public memory for more than two decades.

As the “American Idol” alum, now 47, recalled his stint as a guest co-host on the daytime talk show, he shared that his intention was to pose questions to their guests, which led to the unexpected gesture of silencing Ripa.

During a recent discussion on the “Hollywood Raw” podcast, Aiken was asked if he had spoken to Ripa since that day. His response was candid: “No. I didn’t have the problem.”

Despite his active involvement in New York City’s Broadway circuit and social events, Aiken revealed he has encountered Ripa, now 55, at various gatherings over the years.

Reflecting on their lack of reconciliation, Aiken admitted, “Maybe I should feel bad that I have not gone up and said something myself, but she hasn’t either.” He emphasized the passage of time, noting, “We’re talking about something that happened — 20 years ago — which became this huge blowup.”

“That was the most catastrophic week of my life,” the musician added. “No one would remember but me because I was the one with the scars.”

“I’m on the show because I wanted to show them I could handle this myself; I could host something and I wasn’t getting to talk,” he said.

“Like, there were cue cards. They had my name on them. So I tried to be funny, and I did what I did, which was incredibly innocent. And then it got a little cold in the room.”

Aiken admitted that he felt bad and was “worried” that he had upset Ripa after seeing the audience “frozen.”

“Is that a no-no?” Aiken asked Ripa at the time, to which she responded, “Oh, that’s a no, no, no. Don’t know where that hand’s been, honey.”

The TV personality shared on the podcast that he didn’t remember how he and Ripa parted ways, but it wasn’t until the following week, when the latter’s co-host, Regis Philbin, had returned, that the situation escalated.

At the time, Philbin, who died in 2020, and Ripa discussed Aiken’s “hostility.”

“There was a lack of respect, and when you’re a certain person, you’re in the public eye, you have to be respectful of other people,” Ripa told her co-host.

“And I don’t think that he was respectful in any way. If that upsets his fans, I’m sorry to hear that, but you don’t put your hands over somebody’s face and mouth when they’re conducting an interview, even if it’s for a laugh. And that’s all I’m gonna say.”

Then the following day, Rosie O’Donnell addressed the incident on “The View” and referred to Ripa as  “homophobic” despite Aiken not having been out yet.

Ripa responded to the actress by calling into the talk show to defend herself, stating, “I have three kids. He’s shaking hands with everybody in the audience.”

“I mean, it’s cold and flu season. That’s what I meant. To imply that it’s anything homophobic is outrageous, Rosie, and you know better. You should be more responsible,” the TV personality told O’Donnell.

Recalling the “blow up,” Aiken said, “I was not out at the time. I was to Rosie … I was out to people who I knew, but I wasn’t publicly out about it.”

“I was not out to my grandparents and the people in my family. And not only does Rosie call it a homophobic remark — which I think she accidentally said, and then she tried to walk it back a little bit — but then Kelly calls in live to ‘The View’ that day and they get in an argument over it.”

The actor added, “Not only did she out me, but they had a big argument about whether I was gay and who talked about me being gay.”

That same week, Aiken reflected on how his “wonderful publicist” and interns did “great work” on finding videos of Ripa placing her hand over Philbin’s mouth throughout the years and sending the clips to the media.

“The tides sort of turned,” Aiken said, explaining that he then sent Ripa flowers, which she thanked him for and allegedly apologized for “blowing” the situation out of proportion.

Per Aiken, Ripa extended an olive branch to him and an offer to return to the show. However, the Broadway star alleged that he’s “tried” to appear on the show but has been unable to return.

A rep for Ripa wasn’t immediately available to Page Six for comment.

Barack Obama Shares Heartfelt Support for Knicks Star Jalen Brunson

0

The Knicks have become a team capable of capturing the attention of several former presidents.

Having already garnered praise from Donald Trump for finally ending their 53-year championship dry spell, the New York Knicks, along with stars OG Anunoby and Jalen Brunson, were lauded by Barack Obama during his guest appearance on the “All the Smoke” podcast.

Anunoby emerged as one of the pivotal figures in the Knicks’ victory over the Spurs in the NBA Finals. His crucial last-second tip-in was instrumental in clinching Game 4, which saw the team make a dramatic comeback from a 29-point deficit at Madison Square Garden.

Reflecting on Anunoby’s performance, Obama remarked, “I’m struggling to recall a more impressive series by a player who hasn’t been an All-Star, don’t you agree?” He continued, noting how Anunoby served as a reliable force throughout the playoffs.

During the Knicks’ playoff campaign, Anunoby averaged 20.1 points and 6.3 rebounds over 17 games, acting as a key driver in their successful run.

The former commander in chief, however, didn’t keep his praise to just Anunoby, however, as he listed all the key attributes of Brunson that led him to became NBA Finals MVP.

“It’s the toughness and endurance and mental fortitude of that guy,” Obama said. “You just felt like, ‘I’m going to keep coming and I’m not going to doubt myself and not going to let my team doubt myself.’ And for a second-round draft pick, who was a champion, who was a winner, you didn’t see it coming.”

After comparing Brunson’s run from college to NBA stardom to Steph Curry’s from Davidson to the Warriors, Obama said the Knicks guard had exactly the right attribute to become a winner.

“A cliche, but that dude has the heart of a champion,” Obama said. “You can see, just watching him with his dad [Rick Brunson] at the end of the game and kind of what that meant, all the work they must’ve put in. All those years, all that commitment — real proud of him. And I know he’ll never have to pay for a meal again in New York. … He’s the king of New York right now.”

The comments come nine days after Trump heaped praise on owner James Dolan and the Knicks for their win on Truth Social.

“What incredible playoff wins we have all witnessed, especially the last four — Maybe the greatest in the history of basketball,” Trump wrote.

Dolan told WFAN last week that the Knicks would visit the White House, becoming the first NBA team to visit Trump during either of his two terms.

Brunson, in an interview with New York magazine published Wednesday, said he and the team have not discussed a visit to the nation’s capital.

“We haven’t discussed it,” Brunson said. “But as a team, we’ll discuss it and we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”

Air Canada Flight Forced to Divert to Boston After Pilot Removal Midair

0

On Wednesday, an unexpected medical emergency midair prompted an Air Canada flight to make an urgent diversion to Boston’s Logan International Airport. The unscheduled landing occurred after the captain of the flight encountered a health issue, as confirmed by the airline.

Flight AC7664, which was overseen by Air Canada’s regional partner PAL Airlines, was on its way from Newark, New Jersey to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The flight, carrying 61 passengers, was traveling aboard a De Havilland Q400 turboprop when the situation arose.

According to a statement given to Fox News by Air Canada, the captain experienced a medical event that necessitated his removal from the flight deck, following standard safety procedures.

In the midst of the emergency, the first officer had to assume complete control of the aircraft, executing a successful diversion. The plane made a safe landing in Boston at 1:37 p.m. local time.

Airline officials said their pilots are fully trained to fly and land safely without the assistance of a second pilot.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) confirmed the aircraft landed without incident, and Massport Fire Rescue and Boston EMS “responded to the crew as necessary.”

The captain, whose condition was not immediately released, was taken for medical treatment in Boston, according to Air Canada.

It is unclear what the medical issue entailed.

The airline is working to provide the affected passengers with new travel arrangements so they can complete their journeys to Halifax.

Mackenzie Shirilla’s Final Appeal Denied in ‘Hell on Wheels’ Murder Case

0

The Ohio Supreme Court has decisively closed the book on Mackenzie Shirilla’s appeals for freedom, dealing a final blow to the convicted killer’s efforts to overturn her sentence. Her most recent appeal was summarily dismissed, following a previous failed attempt that faltered due to a missed filing deadline by a single day.

Currently 21 years old, Shirilla is incarcerated at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, where she is serving a life sentence. Her imprisonment stems from a tragic 2022 car crash that resulted in the deaths of her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, aged 20, and their mutual friend, Davion Flanagan, who was 19.

Tuesday’s decision by Ohio’s highest court effectively seals Shirilla’s fate, ensuring she remains behind bars until at least October 2037. This marks the earliest point at which she will be eligible for parole, earning her the label ‘hell on wheels’ from those following the case closely.

Chief Justice Sharon Kennedy affirmed the court’s stance, signing an order that the court ‘declines to accept jurisdiction of the appeal,’ as reported by People. This decision essentially terminates any legal avenues Shirilla might pursue in seeking relief from her sentence.

Now that her appeals have been fully exhausted, Shirilla’s path to freedom remains blocked until she is eligible for parole at the age of 33, a sobering timeline reflecting the gravity of her actions and the court’s unwavering position.

The decision dealt a crushing blow to her legal team, which has aggressively fought to overturn the verdict through three separate appeals – two in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court and another in the Eighth District Court of Appeals.

Her attorneys have repeatedly argued that medical evidence suggests Shirilla suffered from a pre-existing condition that may have caused her to lose consciousness before slamming her sedan into a brick building at nearly 100mph.

They claimed that her trial lawyers failed to adequately investigate evidence that she suffers from Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, or POTS.

But every attempt she has made has been rejected by the courts.

Shirilla brought her case before Ohio’s highest court after using all available options in the lower courts, but it was denied in May 2025.

She filed a motion for postconviction relief after her initial attempts to secure release were denied, a separate legal process used to challenge a conviction or sentence outside of a direct appeal.

Last month, however, the motion was tossed by the appellate court after her legal team failed to meet the strict deadline, filing it 366 days after the trial transcript was submitted – just one day past the cutoff.

She then petitioned the Supreme Court to consider her motion, arguing that because juvenile court transcripts were not filed until months after the trial transcripts, she should have been allowed more time to submit it.

Her attorneys also argued that the delay was the result of a miscalculation tied to a leap year.

Tuesday’s decision comes years after prosecutors said Shirilla, then 17, deliberately drove her Toyota Camry into the side of the PLIDCO building in Strongsville, Ohio, on July 31, 2022, as her relationship with Russo deteriorated.

While Russo and Flanagan died almost instantly, Shirilla survived the crash and was hospitalized with multiple severe injuries.

Evidence presented at trial showed that the vehicle was traveling approximately 100mph in a 35mph zone moments before impact, with data indicating the accelerator was fully engaged and no brakes were applied.

Surveillance video showed the car speeding down a quiet road before smashing through a business sign and slamming into the building, with first responders finding the vehicle split in half in what one officer called ‘the worst crash I’ve ever seen.’

Shirilla has maintained that the crash was not intentional, calling herself a ‘third victim’ who does not need to be ‘rehabilitated’ in shocking phone calls with her mother.

Judge Nancy Margaret Russo ultimately found her guilty in 2023, famously declaring: ‘This was not reckless driving – this was murder.’

‘She had a mission, and she executed it with precision,’ the judge said.

The case has remained in the headlines in recent weeks following the release of The Crash, which revisited the fatal collision and featured interviews with Shirilla from prison.

The Daily Mail had previously reported allegations from former inmates that she cultivated a ‘Mean Girl’ reputation behind bars, embraced the notoriety surrounding her case and showed little remorse for the crash.

A former inmate, who gave her name as Kat, said: ‘She showed absolutely no remorse. Mackenzie acted like it was glorified high school, she walked around like she was famous.’

Kat also revealed that Shirilla was enjoying such torrid romances with other women that she would regularly walk around with ‘hickeys on her neck.’

‘The girlfriend thing was well known,’ she said. ‘And in prison it’s very common especially for people in her life sentence situation and especially with the younger girls.’

Shirilla herself previously told The Daily Mail that she believed she was the victim of a ‘wrongful conviction.’

She is serving two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life, and has recently landed a prison job as a food service worker after complaining that there was ‘literally nothing’ for her to do behind bars.

Major Earthquakes Devastate Caracas: Multiple Building Collapses Reported in Venezuela

0

Powerful earthquakes rocked areas west of Venezuela’s capital on Thursday, causing buildings to crumble and prompting scientists to predict significant casualties and widespread devastation throughout the South American nation.

The initial earthquake, registering a magnitude of 7.2, was followed by an even stronger 7.5 tremor less than a minute later, both occurring approximately 160 kilometers from Caracas, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The USGS warned of the potential for “extensive damage and high casualties,” with initial estimates of fatalities ranging between 10,000 and 100,000 as the disaster’s impact is expected to be far-reaching.

Authorities have yet to release official figures regarding the number of deaths or injuries.

On state television, Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello confirmed, “Several buildings have collapsed in Caracas, and many homes have been destroyed.”

Video footage showed emergency workers climbing into the ruins of one collapsed building in the capital as night began to fall.

Many Venezuelans were at home when the quakes hit, celebrating a public holiday commemorating an 1821 military victory which secured Venezuela’s independence from Spain.

“As soon as it started, we began hearing people screaming,” Astrid Ramirez, a 41-year-old publicist in western Caracas, said. “Everyone was running down the stairs.”

Venezuela sits on a seismically active tectonic region where the Caribbean Plate collides with the South American Plate.

Residents in the capital, which was also rocked by a deadly magnitude 6.3 earthquake in 1967, rushed to evacuate as the quake shook buildings.

“There was a very loud crash. Things fell in the house, jugs inside the refrigerator. I’ve never experienced anything like it,” said Coro Martinez, 56, who lives in eastern Caracas.

Maria Romero, an 80-year-old pensioner on the south side of Caracas, said that the police helped her get out. “This earthquake was horrible, even worse than the one in 1967,” she added.

Fire trucks could be seen on the streets in the capital, and the facades of some buildings had suffered significant damage.

The US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat for Puerto Rico and the US and British Virgin Islands following the earthquake, adding that islands off the coast of Venezuela — Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire — could also be hit by hazardous waves. It withdrew the warning within about an hour.

Earn $500 for Reporting Illegal Fireworks in SLO County

0

In San Luis Obispo County, citizens are being incentivized with cash rewards to aid in cracking down on illegal fireworks sellers as the Fourth of July approaches.

On Wednesday, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office revealed its collaboration with SLO County Crime Stoppers, aiming to intensify efforts to curb the distribution and use of unlawful fireworks throughout the area.

Through this initiative, locals have the opportunity to receive up to $500 in rewards for providing information that assists authorities in locating individuals who possess or sell illegal fireworks, as enforcement measures are heightened for the upcoming festivities.

“Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $500 for tips leading to the identification and arrest of those found in possession of illegal fireworks with the intent to distribute them,” the county sheriff’s office detailed.

The statement additionally emphasized that “illegal fireworks present a grave risk to public safety, potentially causing fires, injuries, property damage, and severe distress for pets, livestock, veterans, and others sensitive to loud noises.”

The crackdown comes after illegal fireworks sparked a blaze that destroyed the historic Templeton Feed & Grain store during last year’s Fourth of July celebrations.

Prosecutors later charged an adult man and a 16-year-old boy, alleging the pair drove to Bakersfield to buy the illegal fireworks before bringing them back to San Luis Obispo County.

In July 2025, a massive explosion ripped through a 5,000-square-foot fireworks warehouse in Yolo County. Seven workers were killed, two others were injured and the blast ignited a 78-acre wildfire after authorities said large quantities of unregulated fireworks had been stockpiled at the site.

Anyone with information related to illegal fireworks is encouraged to contact 805-549-7867 or to call 805-781-1933 to report the use of them.

JPMorgan Chase Executive Faces Fines and Job Loss After Knicks Game Trash Can Incident

0

A recent incident involving a Knicks championship parade stunt has led to unexpected repercussions, including job loss for a JPMorgan Chase executive. The city has now imposed fines after retrieving a Knicks-themed trash can reportedly taken from a Manhattan street by said executive.

According to the New York City Department of Sanitation, Angie Báez returned the commemorative trash can on Wednesday morning. This action follows a video capturing her emptying its contents onto a sidewalk before taking the can during the Knicks’ championship celebrations.

The Department of Sanitation confirmed to News Media that its police authority issued Báez two summonses related to the episode. She received a $75 penalty for littering and an additional $100 fine for hindering sanitation operations.

“These fines represent the maximum allowable by law for first-time offenders,” stated a spokesperson from the department.

Video of the incident spread widely on social media following the June 18 parade, which drew hundreds of thousands of fans to Lower Manhattan to celebrate the Knicks’ first NBA championship in more than five decades.

Báez was later identified by the New York Post as a JPMorgan Chase executive whose LinkedIn profile listed her as Executive Director of Community and Industry Engagement for Card and Connected Commerce. Her previous experience included diversity, equity and inclusion leadership roles, including at The Infatuation, which was acquired by Chase in 2021.

Following the incident, JPMorgan Chase confirmed that Báez was no longer employed by the company.

News Media contacted JPMorgan Chase on Wednesday seeking additional comment about her departure.

“This employee is no longer with the company,” a spokesperson said, reiterating the company’s previous statement.

The company declined to provide additional details.

Despite the public attention surrounding the incident, the New York Police Department indicated it has no complaint report on file.

“There is no complaint report on file with the information provided in your inquiry,” an NYPD spokesperson told News Media.

The Department of Sanitation said it does not have an estimate for the cleanup costs associated with the trash dumped from the basket, but noted the amount was insignificant compared to the overall cleanup effort following the parade.

“We do not have a cost estimate, but note that the trash you see in the video is a tiny amount in comparison to the 75,260 pounds of confetti and litter we collected Thursday and Friday,” the department said.

The agency also appeared to have some fun with the situation in a social media post announcing the basket’s return.

“We have 23,000 litter baskets on the street citywide, and you never know where one of these may pop up,” the department said, adding that fans interested in a Knicks-themed basket can purchase smaller versions online.

WNBA Star Sophie Cunningham’s Safety Restored as Alleged Stalker Arrested in Indianapolis

0

In a recent development in Indianapolis, a man accused of stalking Sophie Cunningham, the star of the Indiana Fever, has been taken into custody. At 48-years-old, Kevin Singh is set to face the legal system with his initial court appearance scheduled for Thursday.

Authorities have charged Singh with a range of serious offenses, including felony stalking, felony intimidation, and misdemeanor harassment following his detainment on Tuesday. If the court finds him guilty, Singh could be facing a sentence ranging from one to five years in prison.

The situation began when prosecutors allege that Singh delivered a package addressed to ‘Sophie’ at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. This package contained a Guns N’ Roses T-shirt soaked in men’s cologne along with a letter. After this incident, Singh allegedly began a series of persistent and alarming social media messages with explicit content.

The narrative escalated in February, as detailed in the probable cause affidavit. Singh’s behavior reportedly became increasingly menacing, despite being issued a cease-and-desist letter earlier. His actions ultimately led to him being banned from the venue.

In one of his messages to Cunningham, Singh expressed his frustrations over the consequences he faced, stating, ‘The organization literally threatened me with JAIL,’ in reaction to the imposed restrictions. His communication continued with an alarming tone, referencing her mental health and questioning the gravity of his situation, saying, ‘Over what?? Because you can’t stop looking at what I post?? Do you have ANY f***ing clue what that threat feels like? I can’t go there for ANY reason. Any concert, comedy show . . . because of you, & your F***ed UP mental health.’

Singh has also sued the Fever’s parent company Pacers Sports & Entertainment after being barred from the arena, claiming he ‘suffered financial losses, embarrassment, emotional distress, and loss of use of purchased event access’ as a result of the decision, according to the lawsuit.

According to prosecutors, Cunningham initially thought Singh was ‘another guy posting nasty things,’ but is now taking more caution in public.

‘She has been staying in her home more, and she’s been having nightmares,’ read the court file, reported by Fox59.com. ‘Sophie Cunningham also said she feels like she is always watching her back, doesn’t feel safe and is fearful of Kevin Singh.’

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said the case has added weight due to Singh’s prior criminal history.

As reported by WISHTV.com, Singh is on probation in Hendricks County (Indiana) after pleading guilty to two counts of invasion of privacy. Prosecutors in that case dismissed a stalking charge and four other felonies, according to WISHTV.com.

Cunningham is sadly not the first Fever player to be stalked. In July of 2025, a man named Michael Lewis pleaded guilty to stalking Caitlin Clark and was subsequently given a 2.5-year jail sentence.

A Fever spokesperson declined to comment on the matter to The Daily Mail, citing pending litigation.

‘The internet has made it easier than ever to target, harass and intimidate others. Threats of violence, whether face-to-face or behind a keyboard, will be taken seriously,’ Mears said in a statement.

‘Coming forward is never easy, regardless of a person’s position or public profile. The victim is setting an example by speaking out. No one should have to endure harassment, intimidation or threats of violence, and every person deserves to feel safe in their workplace and throughout our community.’

DCC Alum Reece Weaver Supported by Charly Barby Through Retirement Decision

The third season of Netflix’s hugely successful series America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders introduced viewers to vibrant new talents such as Faith Ward, Emily Aubrey, and Parker Kilpatrick. While the newcomers captivated audiences, the show also highlighted the enduring journeys of returning members like Kleine Powell, Megan Mcelaney, and Anna Kate Sundvold. These remarkable women shared their experiences and challenges, hoping to inspire and connect with fans.

One cheerleader who has particularly captured the hearts of Netflix audiences and beyond is Reece Weaver. The 24-year-old from Florida quickly became a standout star thanks to her vibrant personality, kindness, and strong faith in Christ. Married to Will Altman, whom she met at the University of Alabama, Weaver faced a turning point this season. She candidly discussed the pressures of her public role, the physical demands of being a DCC member, the effects of social media, and her commitment to being a dedicated wife.

In a move that surprised few, Weaver announced her retirement from the squad in the season’s finale, after three impactful years. During her emotional exit interview with DCC Director Kelli Finglass and Head Choreographer Judy Trammell, Weaver shared her heartfelt reasons. “This is a difficult day, but I believe it’s time to turn a new page. I’m emotional because of how truly grateful I am. You all trusted me with this role, and it surpassed my dreams,” she expressed tearfully.

After placing her uniform back on the rack, Weaver embraced Finglass and Trammell. “You’ve done an outstanding job and will certainly be missed,” Trammell told Weaver warmly. “Thank you, that’s a tremendous honor,” Weaver responded. Once Weaver exited, Finglass acknowledged her absence from next year’s roster with a heavy heart. “Reece is one of those you struggle to let go,” noted Finglass. “She’s made tremendous life changes and comprehends their significance,” Trammell added. “And I value that deeply. Her gratitude is palpable,” Finglass concluded with genuine emotion.

Weaver’s departure was a poignant moment for many, including her friend Charly Barby. Barby first tried out alongside Weaver in 2023 but didn’t make the team until 2024. Despite this, she maintained a close bond with Weaver throughout the process. Speaking with DECIDER over Zoom, Barby shared that she stood by Weaver through “every aspect of her decision” to retire.

Heroic K-9 Uncovers Major Drug Operation in Tuscaloosa

0

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — A routine traffic stop on Interstate 59/20 has culminated in a significant drug trafficking arrest, resulting in the confiscation of over 14 pounds of cocaine.

The West Alabama Narcotics Task Force stopped a black Ford F-350 towing a trailer when the driver was observed failing to maintain lane integrity, according to a deposition filed on Monday.

Upon the vehicle being stopped, law enforcement identified the driver as 49-year-old Oswaldo De La Cruz Gutierrez. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle and reportedly gave verbal permission for the agents to conduct a search. Meanwhile, Tuscaloosa Police Department’s K-9 unit, featuring the dog Baki, conducted an exterior sniff and indicated the presence of drugs.

The K-9 Baki’s detection skills led to the discovery of 14.2 pounds of cocaine concealed inside a backpack. This bag was strategically hidden beneath the spare tire of the gooseneck trailer, situated in the truck bed, as detailed in court records.

“It’s not surprising,” commented John Clayton, Assistant Special Agent in Charge with the Drug Enforcement Administration. “There is a significant amount of trafficking along the I-20/59 corridor.”

Methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl are the top three drugs being trafficked almost every day across the state. As Clayton mentioned, while it’s not a shock to law enforcement, locating drugs is not always easy.

“If you can dream it, it can be done,” Clayton said. “From trailers, boats and miscellaneous hiding spots on vehicles, they use any way they can to move these drugs through the area without being detected.”

That is where police K-9s come in.

“If a drug trafficker is trying to conceal those drugs, they’re not going to allow us to search the vehicle without probable cause,” said Sgt. Brad Flowers with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. “That’s a huge role the dog plays in the state of Alabama to give us that probable cause to search.”

Flowers is sergeant over TCSO K-9 training. Just like at the Tuscaloosa Police Department, the sheriff’s office uses dogs for various tasks including suspect apprehensions, bomb and drug detecting. In the case of drugs, without probable cause such as blatant smells of drugs or visible drugs or paraphernalia, law enforcement cannot search that vehicle.

But if a K-9 called onto the scene for an air check alerts to drugs, they now have probable cause.

“Just our dogs at the sheriff’s office — at least 25 times a month they are getting us into a car when we wouldn’t be able to do it,” Flowers said.

In the most recent case involving a TPD K-9, the dog was able to help agents locate cocaine despite being in a bag under a tire because even some of the most secretive and eluding hiding spots can’t fool a dog’s nose.

“Sometimes on really windy days, the odor travels to different areas of the vehicle,” Flowers said. “So the dog might locate a little further back, but they’re normally pretty close to where it will be found.”

The Chilton County man arrested Friday by the task force is charged with drug trafficking. He remains in jail on $2 million bond. If the man is released from jail, he will be put under house arrest with ankle monitoring surveillance, per a court order.
