Millions Alerted to Potentially Fatal Flooding as Hurricane Arthur Strikes US Coast

0

The trajectory of Tropical Storm Arthur poses a significant threat to approximately 40 million residents spread across eight states. The storm, which has been named the first of this hurricane season, made its initial impact on Wednesday night.

After making landfall on the Texas Coast, Arthur has been reclassified as a post-tropical cyclone. As it progresses, the storm is expected to unleash torrential rains and severe flooding from Louisiana to the Carolinas.

Experts at AccuWeather have issued warnings of “extreme” flooding risks for Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle throughout Thursday. These regions could experience rainfalls reaching up to 12 inches, which may exacerbate flooding in both coastal and urban areas.

By Friday, the storm’s effects are predicted to extend to Georgia and the Carolinas. Forecasters caution that Arthur will likely continue to cause life-threatening floods, substantial property damage, and significant disruptions to both commerce and travel.

Alex DaSilva, AccuWeather’s Hurricane Expert, highlighted the risk in a statement, noting that rainfall could range from 2 to 4 inches per hour. Such intense rainfall might lead to swift flooding, potentially resulting in road closures, particularly within urban locales.

However, flooding is not the only concern tied to Arthur, as the National Weather Service has also issued a widespread tornado watch across coastal areas in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

In Mississippi specifically, weather officials upgraded that alert to an official tornado warning in Perry, Greene, Stone, Harrison, Hancock and Pearl River Counties – warning that twisters could touch down at any moment.

NWS said in a statement: ‘TAKE COVER NOW! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.’

Tropical Storm Arthur’s June 17 landfall is the earliest a named storm has hit the US mainland since Tropical Storm Cristobal struck Louisiana on June 7, 2020.

It has been 40 years since a hurricane made a June landfall in the US, when Bonnie landed in Texas in 1986.

Only one tropical storm made a direct hit on the US last year, when Tropical Storm Chantal struck South Carolina on July 6, 2025.

Although the weather phenomenon known as El Niño is expected to make this Atlantic hurricane season weaker than normal, forecasters have warned that conditions could particularly extreme between Texas and the Carolinas all summer.

While El Niño flips global weather patterns, making it warmer in the Pacific and cooler in the Atlantic, it also pushes the natural jet stream flowing over the US farther south, creating a continuous stream of turbulent air over the southern half of the country.

AccuWeather’s Paul Pastelok told the Daily Mail that the 800-mile-long corridor between Houston, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia is likely to see continuous extreme weather events, even if they do not become tropical storms and hurricanes.

‘As far as heavy rainfall and tornadoes, Houston to Atlanta, Orlando and parts of the Mid-Atlantic, pick a city… those are more concerning, especially as you get into later this year,’ Pastelok warned.

Arthur’s path on Thursday and Friday will follow that exact route, according to the latest tracking models, likely exiting in the Atlantic after surging through North Carolina on Saturday.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for 101 Texas counties due to the severe storms, heavy rainfall and flooding cause by Arthur this week.

Meanwhile, severe heat advisories have been issued by NWS in several areas surrounding Arthur, including in Florida, North Carolina and throughout Southern and Central Texas.

Intense humidity moving with the Gulf storm is making temperatures feel 10 to 15°F hotter than it actually is for millions throughout the Southeast.

The heat index, which is the ‘feels like’ temperature on days when the air is more humid, is expected to reach 110°F throughout Southern Florida on Thursday, including on Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

Conditions are expected to be even worse in South Texas, where the heat index will rise to 120°F in Corpus Christi, Laredo and San Antonio.

NWS said: ‘Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.’

Chicago Cross Burning: Man Charged with Hate Crime After Shocking Park Incident

0

A 21-year-old man has been formally charged with committing a hate crime, arson, and other related offenses following the burning of a cross in a Chicago park, according to police reports.

Merlin Lu confessed to a local television station earlier this week that he was behind the cross burning incident that took place on June 9 in Grant Park. However, he claimed his actions were intended as a protest against President Donald Trump, and not as a symbol of racial hate or intimidation towards the Black community.

The police, in a statement released Wednesday night, confirmed that Lu faces multiple charges, including four felonies and four misdemeanors. Among these are charges for a hate crime and for using a cross to intimidate.

“I understand why my actions were perceived in that manner, and I apologize, but that was not my intent,” Lu stated in an interview with WMAQ-TV prior to his arrest.

As of Thursday, it was unclear whether Lu had legal representation to speak on his behalf. He was set to appear in court for a detention hearing.

“I did know about this historical relevance beforehand. But I didn’t know the severity, how racially motivated it may seem from what I did,” Lu told the TV station. “Cause my protest has nothing to do with race, nothing to do with gender.”

Lu said he was protesting the “ruling class” and Christian nationalists who support Trump.

Someone put a large, multicolored, glass fiber heart with the word, “resilient,” in the place where the burning cross stood in the park.

Lu’s LinkedIn page says he has attended college in Indiana and Chicago and was studying chemistry.

Portugal’s Internal Strife: Ronaldo’s Sister Fuels Tensions with Fernandes Amidst Martinez’s Potential Saudi Move

0

Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister stirred up controversy by liking an Instagram post that criticized Bruno Fernandes, sparking rumors of discord within the Portuguese team following their lackluster 1-1 draw against DR Congo on Wednesday.

Portugal, who traveled to the United States as one of the World Cup favorites, saw their campaign stumble right from the start in Houston.

Joao Neves gave Roberto Martinez’s squad an early lead with a remarkable header, but just before halftime, DR Congo equalized with a goal from Yoan Wissa.

The match concluded in a draw, despite Portugal’s significantly higher FIFA world ranking, sitting 37 places above their African opponents.

In Portugal, the reaction to the result has been predictably intense, with increasing demands for Ronaldo to be benched after the former Manchester United star failed to record any shots on target during the Texas match.

But now, in a dramatic turn of events, Ronaldo’s sister appears to have thrown her support behind an attack on Red Devils captain Fernandes.

The 41-year-old’s elder sibling Katia Aveiro liked an Instagram post by a Brazilian page accusing Fernandes of performing for United, but failing to turn up in a Portuguese shirt.

The account also compared the United captain to Barcelona winger Raphinha, whose poor form for Brazil has brought him a wave of criticism this week.

‘This one here is the Raphinha for Portugal. Too much popcorn for the national team,’ the post, featuring a picture of Fernandes, read.

However, Ronaldo has bore the brunt of the backlash after appearing a shadow of his former self during the clash.

The Al Nassr forward registered just 25 touches against Congo and failed to fashion a single clear-cut chance – yet, still, was not substituted.

With 83 minutes on the clock and Portugal in desperate need of a goal, Martinez instead opted to replace Champions League-winning midfielder Vitinha with Goncalo Ramos.

The move was blasted by ex-England forward Chris Sutton as ’embarrassing’ on BBC Radio 5 Live.

‘He (Martinez) is scared to take him off. He is not the manager. He (Ronaldo) might score the winner, but the game passed him by,’ Sutton fumed.

‘He is a brilliant player. He was once the playmaker, but now he is the poacher. He is not only the poacher, but he runs the estate.

But the icon has become increasingly ineffective leading the line for Portugal

‘I don’t understand some of his management. Cristiano Ronaldo was on the periphery and Martinez has to be brave enough to be the manager.’

Martinez responded to that criticism by insisting that it would have made ‘no sense’ to substitute the greatest goalscorer in Portuguese history when his country needed a goal.

‘We were finding it difficult because they were playing in a back six,’ Martinez argued.

‘And in a situation like that, you can use his qualities. It makes no sense to get a player like Cristiano out of the game where you need goals.

‘The straight line is not the quickest way. The way he attracts defenders and uses space is valuable. When you need goals, you need a player like Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch.’

This summer’s tournament is expected to be Martinez’s final one at the helm, with a return to club football seeming likely.

And reports emerging today suggest that the 52-year-old is in talks with Ronaldo’s Al Nassr over a potential cash-grab switch to the Middle East.

The Saudi Pro League side are on the hunt for a new manager with Jorge Jesus, who departed last month after winning the league.

It was initially thought that the Saudi Government-owned club had their sights set on the appointment of ex-Fulham boss Marco Silva, but he looks set to join Benfica.

Martinez has not managed a club side in a decade but a move to Al Nassr could be ideal for the ex-Wigan Athletic and Everton boss.

He would team up with not only Ronaldo in Riyadh but also Joao Felix, who has too travelled Stateside with Portugal for the World Cup.

Severe Flash Flooding Strikes Southern States Amid Prolonged Rainfall from Storm Arthur

0

As Post-Tropical Storm Arthur transitions, it brings with it the potential for severe and life-threatening floods across the southern United States. Communities in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama are bracing for the impact as relentless rains continue to pour.

The lingering effects of Tropical Storm Arthur are making their presence felt, putting millions at risk of flash floods from Eastern Texas stretching all the way to Georgia.

Authorities have issued a Level 4 out of 4 flash flood warning for Thursday, with the threat scaling down slightly to Level 3 out of 4 by Friday. These warnings highlight the severe rainfall and possible catastrophic flooding expected in the Southeast U.S.

Areas identified as highly vulnerable to flooding include Baton Rouge in Louisiana, Jackson in Mississippi, Montgomery in Alabama, and Atlanta in Georgia.

The FOX Forecast Center notes, “A convergence of moisture from the Pacific and the Gulf is creating a persistent plume over the South, significantly increasing the flood risk across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The most intense rainfall is expected to remain on the storm’s eastern flank as it progresses northward.”

As a result, flood watches are in effect across most of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.

The flooding has already claimed the life of a 15-year-old in Texas, who drowned in a flooded pond.

A massive multi-unit search was coordinated, with boats and specialized diving teams deployed.

Following an extensive search and the use of sonar technology, the teenager was located submerged in the water and pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

Overall, widespread rainfall could total 5 to 8 inches across Southern Texas to Alabama, with 8 to 12 inches possible in portions of Louisiana, which could result in deadly flash flooding.

Outside of the flash flood risk, there is a lingering Level 2 out of 5 severe storm threat across coastal Mississippi and into Southern Alabama, where tornadoes are possible.

As the remnants of Arthur move toward the Carolinas, rounds of persistent rain will kick off on Thursday and last well into Friday, but there is uncertainty about when exactly the heaviest rain will fall.

As this mid-level spin moves offshore, it will hover over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream.

At this point on Friday, a new area of low pressure could form, bringing gusty winds and heavy rain to coastal regions along the East Coast.

This is unlikely to be a tropical threat, but it is worth monitoring amid potential development in the coming days.

Royal Experts Reveal: Charles and Harry’s Private Meeting Set for Next Month

0

According to recent reports, King Charles is eager to mend fences with Prince Harry and is willing to make time for him, along with Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet, should they decide to visit the UK next month.

If the family plans to travel together in mid-July, the King is expected to prefer a private meeting, likely at a royal residence.

However, insiders suggest that Queen Camilla might choose to excuse herself from such a gathering, and it is believed that the Prince and Princess of Wales are unlikely to join the meeting with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Royal aides are reportedly cautious about the possibility of Harry and Meghan utilizing their visit as a platform, especially amid claims that a Netflix film crew might accompany them to the UK.

Royal commentator and author Phil Dampier noted that some skeptics argue Harry and Meghan could be seeking a boost of royal allure, considering their waning influence in the United States.

It will be the first time in four years that the Duke of Sussex and his family have visited the UK, in time for the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games for injured servicemen in Birmingham.

But not everyone in Harry’s family will be as keen to see them as King Charles, particularly his wife and eldest son.

Phil Dampier said: ‘The King wants a reconciliation with his son and wants to see his grandchildren. I think he will want to avoid a public meeting on this trip as it would turn into a circus, but would meet them privately.

‘But whether Queen Camilla is keen to meet is another matter. It wouldn’t surprise me if she has some family commitment to go to and avoids them. She will feel she was badly treated in Harry’s book Spare.’

He added: ‘There is now no way, however, that Harry will meet up with William and Catherine.’

The Prince and Princess of Wales are not expected to see the Sussexes (pictured together after the Queen’s death in 2022)

‘He [Harry] has been making it clear in recent months that he wants a reconciliation with his family, but how genuine that is only he knows.

‘Harry’s aim is to get him along to the Invictus Games as guest of honour next year.’

Mr Dampier also believes that the fact all four Sussexes are coming to the UK suggests that Harry has had ‘assurances’ they will get taxpayer-funded armed bodyguards.

‘No one knows what security arrangements have been made for Harry and Meghan’s trip next month, but the fact she is coming with their children indicates they have been given some assurances,’ he said.

‘It may be that security is provided on a case-by-case basis in future.

‘I don’t think taxpayers would want to finance their security full time, so this is a compromise.’

Royal commentator Richard Palmer says the Palace remains worried about Meghan and Harry’s motives for wanting contact with the Royal Family again.

Aides are concerned about whether to trust them, given all the secrets they have spilled since Megxit.

He said: ‘There remains a fair degree of suspicion within the Royal Household, and there is the fear that they will use any meetings with the monarch to try to boost their commercial brand. But against that, the King wants to have a relationship with his grandchildren.

‘If Archie and Lilibet are coming over, then I think it makes it highly likely that the Sussexes will spend time with the King. There’s a good chance that this could be the start of the family coming to terms with the rift and starting to try to rebuild relationships.

‘It may never be the same, but families can learn to move on and reach some sort of accommodation after these types of rifts. Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales may be more cautious about meeting. It may take more for them to be won over, but this could be the start of something.’

Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, have not seen their grandfather King Charles III since their last trip to Britain in June 2022 for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Duchess of Sussex has not made a long trip to the UK since the late Queen’s funeral that September, only stopping over in London on foreign tours.

She and Harry were booed on the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral last time they were seen by the public almost four years ago.

Harry is said to be satisfied with security arrangements for the visit in mid-July and is now planning for Archie and Lilibet to make the trip from California.

One of his business associates in Los Angeles said there had been a ‘warming of the frost’ between Harry and Charles, telling the Telegraph: ‘Harry says he’s coming back before the end of the year with the children with the express intent to reunite with his dad.

‘He has wanted his kids to meet their grandfather, especially after their summit in London last year.

‘While there have been deep-seated trust issues, there is a sense now that all parties want peace.’

Harry, who stepped down as a working royal in 2020, levelled a barrage of accusations at the Royal Family in his Oprah Winfrey interview, Netflix documentary and tell-all memoir Spare.

But in a step towards repairing their troubled relationship, Harry joined Charles for a private tea when he visited the UK in September last year, spending 54 minutes with his father at Clarence House.

It is not known whether Harry or his family will see Charles on the visit, though the prince will meet people from patronages such as WellChild and Scotty’s Little Soldiers.

A source close to Harry told News.com.au: ‘It’s been a point of great sadness that he’s been unable to bring his wife and kids back to the UK safely to reconnect with friends and family, but anyone would understand his desire to put their safety first.

‘He would love to introduce the children to his wider family, to show them the UK, where he grew up – his homeland. That would be a natural thing for any parent.’

The Daily Mail understands Harry and his family would not automatically receive enhanced security protection for a private family visit.

A spokesman for the Sussexes declined to comment.

Journey to Success: How an Immigrant Family Thrived in Jacksonville’s Land of Opportunity

0

The tale of Shankar and Sudha Thayver is a testament to the sacrifices, determination, and hopes that lure countless individuals to the shores of America. Their story is emblematic of the immigrant experience that has long been a cornerstone of the American narrative.

In the ongoing national discourse about immigration, which remains a contentious yet vital subject, the stories of those who leave their homelands in search of opportunity and a brighter future are both compelling and essential. As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, First Coast News is shedding light on the journeys of immigrant families, such as the Thayvers, who embarked on their new life from the distant city of Madurai, India.

As they sift through old family photographs, Shankar and Sudha recount the beginnings of their life together, which started with an arranged marriage nearly three decades ago.

“Can you imagine? I had never spoken to her or even seen her before our wedding,” Shankar recalls with a chuckle, reflecting on the unique circumstances that set the stage for their shared journey.

“Can you imagine I’ve never talked to her, seen her.. getting married,” Shankar said with a laugh.

Their union in Madurai was lavish, drawing 1,200 guests.

“This is right before the wedding,” Sudha said while looking through the album.

But the life they would build together would take them far from home. Shankar’s first stop in the United States was Delaware, where he worked for a tech company while his wife and young child remained behind in Madurai.

“It was hard leaving family, without Indian food, you know – new boss, new work environment – that is hard,” Shankar said.

Stories like the Thayver’s are part of a much larger American story.

“We are a society that has been created through migration and understanding the history of immigration is essential to understanding what it means to be American today,” said Nicholas B. Miller, Associate Professor of History at Flagler College.

Miller says families who leave behind the familiar for unknown possibilities often embody the promise that continues to draw people to the United States.

“Perhaps the American Dream lives on most brilliantly among foreigners. It’s that vision of America as this place of opportunity, that continues to inspire millions of migrants to pursue a life in the United States,” Miller said.

For Shankar, the experience deepened his appreciation for the country he hoped to build a future in.

“I always appreciate what the forefathers had to go through to build this country to what it is right, it’s amazing. American history is well documented, and it breaks your heart when you read through it.”

The challenges didn’t end once the family reunited.

“When my mom was here because I’m upper middle class from India right, so she’s like what are you doing here?!” Sudha recalled.

Sudha went from a pampered lifestyle at home to cleaning houses in the United States.

“It was a big challenge for me, but you know what– at the end, we all want to make it.”

The couple has since worked their way back into a privileged class, but not before extraordinary sacrifice. Jacksonville’s Indian community is one of the fastest-growing immigrant populations in Northeast Florida. According to Neilsberg research, the city is home to more than 13,600 residents of Indian descent, making up roughly 1.4% of the local population.

It was here in the River City that the Thayvers found opportunity to build the life they envisioned in the land of the free.

“Free of speech, free of faith- whatever you want to do. But the financial freedom is also very, very important right,” Shankar said.

The family’s path to success included setbacks.

“We started buying investment properties. I didn’t like what the agents were telling you. No one was savvy enough to do the numbers well.”

Shankar went back to school, earned his real estate license and worked tirelessly, earning the nickname “Weekend Warrior.”

“And we were struggling I’ll tell you- me and my wife,” Shankar said. “We bought this house, a couple of investment properties- everything was losing money- and we have two young children. It was challenging.”

At the time, Sudha was living in the United States on a dependent visa and, without a Green Card, felt limited in what she could do.

“I had to wait until I get my permanent residency so I can start working. That’s when I started helping more.”

Eventually, Shankar left the tech job that brought the family to Jacksonville, and together they doubled down on their vision of life in America.

“We hired our first employee an then it just kept growing and growing, Shankar said. “And in 2018 we did our first acquisition. We’ve done seven acquisitions so far.”

Today, the Jacksonville based Thayver Group also has an office in Dallas and 40 people on its team. Their children are now adults, and the company continues to grow.

As Shankar and Sudha reflect on success earned through decades of sacrifice, perseverance and hard work, you’ll hear no regrets about building a life in the United States.

“In my opinion it’s the best country on earth with all these opportunities,” Shankar said.

“If not this country I cannot say where else I would have done it. I am very grateful for this country and where I am now,” Sudha said.

US-Iran Agreement Unveiled: Key Details You Need to Know

0

In brief

  • The full text of the 14-point memorandum of understanding was published on Thursday morning.
  • United States President Donald Trump has signed the document, a US official said.

The United States and Iran have put an end to days of speculation by unveiling the full text of their memorandum of understanding. This document clarifies the terms of their recent agreement.

Released on Thursday morning, the document—entitled the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran—was shared by a senior U.S. official and broadcast by Iranian state media.

According to a U.S. official speaking to Agence France-Presse, President Donald Trump has secured an agreement with Iran aimed at concluding the ongoing Middle East conflict. The official confirmed that the signing occurred during a dinner with the President of France, as reported by U.S. media outlet Axios.

Iran’s state media, referencing foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, reported early Thursday that the agreement has been officially signed by the presidents of both countries.

Though details are sparse, the agreement addresses several key issues, including Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the easing of sanctions, the conflict in Lebanon, and ensuring the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Your trusted source for staying up-to-date with the world around you. Get free daily news updates and analysis, straight to your inbox.

It paves the way for a broader 60-day negotiation period for a final deal, with talks starting in Switzerland on Friday.

“The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran commit to negotiating and achieving the final deal in maximum 60 days extendable with mutual consent,” according to the memorandum.

Here is everything you need to know about the 14-point memorandum between the countries.

End of conflict on ‘all fronts’

The first point of the agreement declares “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon”.

“The final deal will confirm the permanent termination of the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and other provisions of this paragraph,” it said.

Lebanon has been a sticking point in the broader Middle East conflict. Last week, tensions escalated when Iran struck Israel in retaliation for Israeli strikes in Lebanon — attacks Iran said violated the ceasefire that took effect in April.

Talking to reporters at the close of the G7 summit in France, Trump expressed sympathy for Lebanon while criticising Israel, calling it a source of tension with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

‘Safe passage’ in the Strait of Hormuz

According to the fifth point of the deal, with the signing of the memorandum, “Iran will make arrangements using its best efforts for the safe passage of commercial vessels with no charge for 60 days only from the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman and vice versa”.

It also says Iran will start talks with Oman to “define the future administration and maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz”.

Located between Iran and Oman, the Strait of Hormuz is an essential trade route that typically carries a fifth of the world’s oil.

On the other hand, based on point four of the agreement, the US will fully end the naval blockade of Iran “within 30 days” and will “further undertake to remove its forces from the proximity of the Islamic Republic of Iran within 30 days after the final deal”.

Iran’s nuclear questions

The eighth point of the agreement appears to be the main focus of discussions between the US and Iran over the next 60 days.

It says the Iranian government “reaffirms that it shall not procure or develop nuclear weapons”, but it doesn’t detail the method.

In regard to Iran’s current uranium stockpile, the memorandum says the “minimum” methodology will be “downblending the stockpile under the supervision” of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The countries have also agreed “to discuss the issue of enrichment” — Iran has previously insisted on keeping the country’s enrichment capability, which the US is against.

A US$300 billion for the ‘reconstruction’ of Iran

Points six, seven, 10 and 11 of the memorandum are about the economic advantages for Iran.

Based on the agreement, as part of the “final deal”, the US and regional partners will develop a US$300 billion ($427.5 billion) plan “for the reconstruction and economic development” of Iran.

On Tuesday, in a post on Truth Social, Trump said: “The story that the US is paying Iran 300 million Dollars is Fake News.”

It also says the US will take action to make fully available for use “the frozen or restricted funds and assets” of Iran. Decades of international sanctions have left a huge part of Iran’s assets frozen abroad.

With the “implementation” of the memorandum, the US and Iran “will mutually agree on the procedures related to the release of these funds during the negotiation”.

It also says, “as a part of the final deal”, the US will “terminate all types of sanctions against” Iran.

With the signing of the memorandum and until the termination of sanctions, the US will also issue waivers for the export of Iranian crude oil, according to the agreement.

Maintaining “the status quo”

Point nine of the deal says the countries will “maintain the status quo” until the final deal is reached.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will maintain the current status quo of its nuclear program and the United States of America will not impose any new sanctions and will not deploy additional forces in the region,” it wrote.

Prince William Steps In to Help Preserve Beloved Local Pub

0

On June 18, 2026, Prince William stepped up to preserve a cherished village pub with a personal contribution.

The Prince of Wales generously donated £1,000, emphasizing the importance of such establishments as “lifelines” in a heartfelt letter to a group striving to safeguard the Somerset Arms in Semington, Wiltshire. This beloved pub has remained closed for three years and is now on the market.

Prince William wants to help save pubs

Prince William wants to help save pubs

As reported by the Daily Telegraph, Prince William addressed the Semington Community Benefit Society, stating, “Pubs have long occupied a special role in the core of British culture.

“These venues offer more than just hospitality; they are essential places that unite people, cultivate a sense of community, and enhance the well-being of local residents.

“They are not simply places of hospitality, but vital spaces that bring people together, foster a sense of belonging and support the well-being of local communities.

“In rural areas, they can be a lifeline, helping to combat isolation and sustain local identity. I am very keen to support the role that pubs play, not only as businesses, but as community hubs that contribute so much to the social fabric of our nation.”

William told the campaigners he is looking forward to “coming down to pull a pint and celebrate your success”.

Andy Cobley, the vice chairman of the Semington Community Benefit Society said they were “over the moon” to have received support from the 44-year-old royal.

He said: “We are incredibly excited and stunned. It is brilliant His Royal Highness can recognise what is going on in these small villages and help us out. It’s fantastic.”

The group are aiming to raise £395,000 to buy the Somerset Arms, and so far have received almost £195,000 in pledges and £4,000 in individual donations.

News of the donation comes just two weeks after William insisted “we need to protect our pubs” during a visit to the Prince of Peckham in south east London.

He told a group of regulars at the bar: “I could stay here forever.

“I love pubs. I want to do as much as I can to support them because I love the community.

“We need to protect our pubs.

“It’s the people – the team – around a pub that make it.”

The prince – who has children Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight, with wife Catherine, Princess of Wales – praised owner Clem Ogbonnaya.

He added: “It’s a family business which is good, because that makes the pub.”

William surprised residents at the pub, who were there for the weekly Chatty Patty breakfast club, which aims to tackle loneliness and offers free tea for locals, and told them he “grew up in pubs”.

During the visit, William received a round of applause and declared his efforts “really good” when he pulled a pint of Red Stripe with the owner, before tucking into jerk chicken and plantain.

He said of the dish: “It blew my mind. I’m hoping Deliveroo can deliver this to Windsor.”

Clem believes pubs are “very underused spaces” that can play a key role in bringing communities together, and praised the prince for having “come down here and put something like Chatty Patty on the map”.

He added: “We want Chatty Patty to exist not just in Peckham but all around London.

“The key thing he was talking about was how do we, because there are a lot of disenfranchised young black Britons in the country, how do we address that – how do we get more of these spaces with all of this energy, all this love and enthusiasm throughout the whole of London.”

And during a trip to Scotland in January, William and Catherine spent time at The Gothenberg pub in former mining village Fallin, where the prince ordered half a pint of cider.

William told a table of local men, including publican Rob Donaldson: “I want to help pubs. This is the best place to come and get to know each other.

Knicks Prepare for Face-Off with Trump Following Spectacular NBA Finals Booing

0

New York Knicks owner, James Dolan, has officially announced that the reigning NBA champions will visit the White House in celebration of their remarkable title win.

This visit marks the first time an NBA championship team will make the trip to the White House during the Trump administration.

Speaking on WFAN New York on Wednesday, Dolan shared that the formal invitation from Washington, D.C., was received and promptly accepted by the team’s management.

For Dolan, the decision holds considerable personal significance, given his longstanding friendship with the president. He recently hosted the president in his private suite during Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

“I invited the President to join us for the game,” Dolan commented. “He’s a friend I’ve known for three decades, and I’m really excited to have the opportunity to take the team to the White House.”

The president has previously reciprocated that admiration publicly, praising Dolan’s competitive drive and the remarkable resilience of the roster during a press conference earlier in the month.

‘I’ve been a Knick fan for a long time, and I’m also a Jim Dolan fan,’ the president noted. ‘He’s a nice guy. He spent a long time wanting to win… He’s got a team that’s amazing.’

The team’s dominant postseason run culminated in a decisive five-game series victory over the San Antonio Spurs, sparking massive, city-wide celebrations that brought millions of fans into the streets.

The lone blemish on the Knicks’ otherwise flawless Finals record came during an intense Game 3 showdown, a matchup that the president watched firsthand alongside Dolan from the executive suite.

During his visit, the president was booed by thousands of Knicks fans inside Madison Square Garden when he was shown on the big screens during the national anthem.

While previous championship teams across various professional sports leagues have occasionally bypassed the traditional Washington capital visit due to scheduling conflicts, the Knicks are seemingly committed to the event.

The update comes just days after Dolan granted a rare television interview to local station Fox 5 New York where he dished about the team’s success, his likelihood for selling the team, and whether or not his venue would host Taylor Swift’s wedding.

Speaking on ‘Good Day New York’ on Wednesday, the day before a ticker-tape parade goes through Lower Manhattan, Dolan revealed that he hasn’t had a good night’s sleep in a while.

‘I finally got a few hours last night, but it’s been long,’ the owner said.

Dolan also expressed some surprise at how much the Knicks victory has brought the city together since the win on Saturday.

‘I knew there was a lot of pent up frustration, but we’re obviously really happy about how people have all come together, the whole city’s turned orange,’ the owner commented.

‘It’s great, it’s great for the city, it’s great to see people come together on something.’

As for why people embraced these Knicks, Dolan believes, ‘I think that it was the team itself.

‘The guys, they’re all lovely people, good character people, and I think that people felt that throughout the season but particularly in the playoffs and Jalen [Brunson] leading them. They’re very, very likeable.’

Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Rex Heuermann’s ‘Dexter’-Inspired Kill Room Revealed: DA Unravels His Fatal Flaws

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — Rex Heuermann, who has confessed to the Gilgo Beach murders, will spend his remaining years behind bars. Disturbingly, prosecutors revealed that he maintained a chilling “Dexter”-like murder chamber in his basement.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, who played a key role in Heuermann’s prosecution, remarked on the eerie resemblance. “It was reminiscent of that show, and upon discovery, those were the comments shared,” Tierney explained. They managed to reconstruct the scene in its original basement setting.

Intriguingly, Heuermann’s former spouse now occupies this very room, a revelation she made in the docuseries, “The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets.”

Judge Timothy Mazzei handed Heuermann the severest sentence available on Wednesday, imposing three consecutive life terms without parole, plus an additional four consecutive sentences of 25 years to life.

“You’re a disgusting and despicable small man, if you’re a man at all,” Mazzei told the defendant. “And you’re a coward.”

Moments later, he told the court officers to “get him out of here.”

Heuermann is expected to be in state prison before the end of the week, Tierney said.

So he took that book, not to gain insight, but to become a better serial killer, specifically not to get caught.

In an interview with Fox News and News Media after the sentencing hearing, Tierney explained why investigators returned to Heuermann’s basement long after they’d arrested him and spent days searching the house.

They recovered a deleted document that Heuermann labeled “HK,” which Tierney said stood for “hunt-kill.” Although Heuermann had made and deleted multiple versions of it over time, investigators could only recover one.

Prosecutors have described it as a planning document. He noted the locations of traffic cameras to and from the places he dumped victims’ bodies. He wrote down supplies he’d need for the murders and reminded himself to be well rested and mindful of screams.

He also discussed the merits of using tape vs. pins to hang drop cloths in the basement where he is believed to have killed seven of the eight victims.

“He was hanging plastic sheets from the ceiling and on the walls,” the district attorney said. “That’s what the document talks about, and then what he says is don’t use push pins, because it ruins the ceiling. Use tape.”

When detectives returned to the home with infrared and ultraviolet lights, they found more evidence.

“We could see the adhesive stains on the wall,” Tierney said. “And then what we are able to do is we were able to see that they made a perfect square — and that’s where, we believe, the crimes occurred.”

Heuermann, described as an “ogre” by the only eyewitness in the case, stands at about 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs close to 300 pounds. The victims were all around 5 feet tall and 100 pounds, and in the “HK” document, he noted that “small is good.”

The victims were Sandra Costilla, 28, found in North Sea; Karen Vergata, 34, found on Fire Island and near Tobay Beach; Valerie Mack, 24, found in Manorville and along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach; Jessica Taylor, 20, found in Manorville and along Ocean Parkway — and the so-called Gilgo Four, who were all found just east of Gilgo Beach in the brush north of Ocean Parkway. They were Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27.

Investigators believe Heuermann’s known killings spanned from Costilla’s 1993 murder through the 2010 disappearance of Costello.

Before Heuermann was sentenced, relatives of his victims delivered emotional statements about the decades of pain and loss left behind by the killings.

Mack’s adoptive parents were among the first to address the court. Her father told Heuermann that despite the brutality of his crimes, “you never touched her soul,” adding that “Valerie is the one who is free today, and you are not.”

Taylor’s relatives recounted the anguish of learning that only some of her remains had initially been recovered and the pain of seeing the case repeatedly return to public attention over the years. One cousin mocked Heuermann’s efforts to evade capture, telling him he had created elaborate plans to get away with murder but still left behind evidence that led investigators to him.

The most emotional testimony came from the family of Brainard-Barnes, one of the so-called Gilgo Four. Her sister, Melissa Cann, recalled the last conversation they shared before Brainard-Barnes disappeared.

“The last words she said to me were, ‘I love you. I’ll see you tomorrow,’” Cann told the court.

Cann described years of survivor’s guilt and said she dedicated herself to helping ensure the killer was eventually identified and brought to justice.

Brainard-Barnes’ daughter, Nicolette, said she was just 7 years old when her mother was killed and is now older than her mother was at the time of her death. She said the victims “mattered infinitely more” than Heuermann and described him as “a coward who takes out his own shortcomings on others.”

Heuermann pleaded guilty to seven murders on April 8 and confessed to Vergata’s 1996 slaying, which he had not been charged with.

Asked if there may be more victims, Tierney declined to speculate. If the evidence ever indicates there were, he said, he’d bring it to a grand jury and seek a new indictment.

He revealed that prosecutors have more evidence against Heuermann that has not yet been made public and described how Heuermann evolved over the years from a “disorganized” killer to an “organized” one.

Tierney said Heuermann appeared more disorganized early in his criminal career before becoming increasingly methodical and deliberate over time, as shown by the planning document, his evolving modus operandi and digital evidence that showed he was scouring news reports for updates on the murders he’d committed.

At some point, he also picked up the book “Mindhunter” by famed FBI analyst John Douglas.

“If you’re a high school football player and you get, Peyton Manning’s book, you want to become a better quarterback,” he said. “So he took that book, not to gain insight, but to become a better serial killer, specifically not to get caught.“

As part of the plea deal, Heuermann has agreed to sit down with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit to be analyzed clinically, Tierney said. Douglas, a pioneer of criminal profiling, had been chief of the FBI’s Behavior Science Unit, the BAU’s predecessor.

“That was a suggestion of mine,” Tierney revealed. “I’m a former federal prosecutor. I’m familiar with the work of BAU. I know I knew about the ‘Mindhunter’ book by this defendant. I knew that that was something that he was interested in, so I thought it would be a good opportunity.”

Investigators could potentially learn from Heuermann in a clinical setting and use the knowledge to assist in new cases as they come up, he said.
