Illegal Immigrant Identified as Suspect in Drone Attack Plot Targeting White House UFC Event

0

An alarming plot to execute a drone attack during a UFC event at the White House has brought the spotlight onto Abraham Alvarez, whom the Department of Homeland Security identifies as the mastermind behind the scheme. This revelation has stirred significant concern, as Alvarez is an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

According to officials, Alvarez entered the United States as a child and remained past the expiration of his B2 visa, which lapsed in 2001. However, he was later granted deportation relief under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program during the Obama administration, allowing him to stay in the country.

Alvarez is among five individuals implicated in a chilling conspiracy to assassinate President Trump and other high-ranking officials during a UFC event hosted on the White House South Lawn. The event, known as UFC Freedom 250, attracted thousands of spectators eager to witness the combat sports spectacle.

Federal investigators are looking into 23 individuals who were allegedly part of the plot.

Those arrested face possible life sentences and a $250,000 fine if convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, with an additional maximum penalty of five years in prison for planning to commit an act ot violence on White House grounds.

2026 Horror Sensation Climbs Hulu’s Charts, Captivating New Audiences

“Return to Silent Hill” has defied scathing reviews to carve out a significant presence at the box office, and now it’s captivating audiences on Hulu. Despite being labeled by some critics as the worst movie of 2026, the film has found a second wind on the streaming platform. According to FlixPatrol, it dominated Hulu’s streaming movie chart in the U.S., securing the top spot from June 14 to June 17. The film has also climbed into the top 10 in various other countries.

This impressive streaming performance mirrors its success in theaters, where it grossed $47.8 million worldwide against a $23 million budget. Studio executives have praised the film’s efficient release strategy, pointing to the enduring appeal of the Silent Hill franchise. While the movie sparked considerable controversy and mixed reactions, many fans found satisfaction in its chilling narrative.

On Rotten Tomatoes, “Return to Silent Hill” garnered a number of positive reviews from audiences who took to the comments section to share their thoughts.

Viewers particularly appreciated the effort behind the film’s production. “Tough movie to make, just happy they made it,” commented a user named Jordan. Another reviewer, Tony R., lauded the movie for honoring the game series and effectively exploring the themes of “Silent Hill 2.” He commended the film’s atmosphere and pacing, suggesting it serves as a solid introduction for newcomers. Fans consistently noted the film’s successful adaptation of the game into a live-action format.

Some fans definitely loved Return to Silent Hill

However, some praise was tempered with caveats. “Better than the last two films, still not as good as the games,” observed a user named Will H. Regardless of whether audiences see “Return to Silent Hill” as a faithful video game adaptation or a standalone horror success, its streaming triumph speaks volumes about its impact.

Most of those viewers noted the hard work that went into making the film. “Tough movie to make just happy they made it,” a commenter named Jordan said. Another reviewer named Tony R. wrote, “They did an amazing job paying homage to the game series and explored each of the themes in Silent Hill 2.” He also praised the film’s mood and pacing, and declared the movie was a solid jumping-off point for newbies. Plenty of fans weighing in noted how good a job the film did translating the game into a live-action film.

Still, some of that praise came with qualifications. “Better than last two films still not as good as the games,” remarked a user named Will H. Whether one thinks “Return to Silent Hill” is just a good video game translation or a good horror film at large, it’s definitely hard to argue with its streaming success.

Kingsport Man Receives 24-Year Sentence for Major Fentanyl and Meth Trafficking Operation

In Greeneville, Tennessee, a federal judge has handed down a significant prison sentence to a Kingsport man involved in the illegal drug trade. On Wednesday, Aaron Tyshawn Jackson, aged 27, was sentenced to 24 years behind bars, followed by a decade of supervised release, due to his role in distributing fentanyl and methamphetamine in the Kingsport area, often referred to as the Model City.

The U.S. District Court’s decision came after Jackson was convicted by a jury on charges of conspiracy to distribute substantial amounts of dangerous substances: 400 grams or more of fentanyl and 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. These charges underscore the severity and scale of his drug operations.

According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s office, the evidence presented during the trial revealed that Jackson had been actively acquiring large quantities of these narcotics in Chattanooga, his former hometown. He then transported and distributed them in Kingsport, contributing significantly to the local drug problem.

Knicks Enthusiasts Gather Overnight as Millions Attend NBA Championship Parade

Manhattan’s streets have erupted into a frenzy as hordes of New York Knicks supporters converge to celebrate their team’s NBA championship with a Thursday morning parade.

Thousands camped out overnight to secure prime spots, while millions more are flocking to the city, eager to catch a glimpse of stars like Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns among the celebrated roster.

This massive turnout has led to chaos and disarray, as fans scramble to find any available space. Some have voiced concerns over the lack of effective organization, with videos capturing tense exchanges and large groups left stranded without direction.

By 7:30 a.m., the NYPD declared all designated viewing areas at full capacity. Nonetheless, social media clips show determined fans breaching a police barricade in a rush to reach the parade route.

The situation worsened when fans gathered at an entrance listed on Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s website, only to be informed of a ‘misunderstanding’—the entrance would remain closed.

‘Open the f***king gate. The gate is supposed to open at six,’ one man was heard shouting.

The Knicks’ dazzling playoff run, which ended with a 4-1 win over the dominant Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, has electrified the city in recent weeks.

Mamdani has predicted that Thursday’s celebration, due to start at 10am ET, might be ‘the largest parade in New York City history’ as fans celebrate the team’s first title since 1973.

‘There will be performances, there will be New Yorkers, there will be the team and there will be history,’ the mayor said Monday.

The event will start near Battery Park and travel up Broadway through the city’s ‘Canyon of Heroes’ before concluding at City Hall, where Mamdani plans to give the players the keys to the city.

Police plan to deploy 10,000 officers to secure the event, which follows jubilant but sometimes chaotic street celebrations that were marred by violence during the Knicks’ series with the Spurs.

‘We want people to enjoy this moment,’ police commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a planning meeting Wednesday, ‘but public safety comes first.’

An NYPD spokesperson said they will deploy helicopters, drones, heavy weapons teams, K-9s and explosive detection dogs, highway units, transit officers and a plainclothes operation.

More than 50 floats and other vehicles are expected to participate and some 650 sanitation workers have been assigned to clean up what could be tens of thousands of pounds of debris, if recent history is any guide.

Knicks legends Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier – a member of the ´70s champion teams – and Patrick Ewing are expected to be in the parade. Mike Breen, the Knicks’ play-by-play announcer on MSG Network, was set to emcee the City Hall ceremony.

Alicia Keys, the singer who joined with Jay-Z on the indelible 2009 ‘Empire State of Mind,’ has been tapped to perform.

‘How could I not?’ Keys said Wednesday in a social media post that featured her chatting with Knicks forward OG Anunoby.

Thursday’s ticker-tape parade will be a first for the Knicks. When the team won the title before, in 1970 and 1973, they weren’t honored with New York’s signature procession.

The festivities on Thursday will be the 210th ticker-tape parade in New York, and it comes after a ticker-tape bash for the WNBA’s New York Liberty in 2024.

Decades-Long Legal Battle Uncovers Racial Bias in Police Investigation of Train Track Incident

0

In brief

  • A coroner has found that a police investigation from 1988 was influenced by racist attitudes.
  • The family of Mark Haines has fought for almost 40 years to prove that racism marred the investigation into his death.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that this article includes the name and image of a deceased individual.

The courtroom atmosphere was tense and respectful as Don Craigie addressed the assembly with his resonant and authoritative voice.

“If that had been a white boy, that train would still be there,” Craigie asserted emphatically during an inquest held in late 2025.

“They would have overturned that train engine,” he added, his words hanging heavily in the air.

Craigie appeared before the inquest to seek justice for his nephew, Mark Haines, whose mysterious death on train tracks near Tamworth, New South Wales, remains unsolved nearly four decades later. Haines, a Gomeroi teenager, was found under circumstances that continue to raise questions.

Your trusted source for staying up-to-date with the world around you. Get free daily news updates and analysis, straight to your inbox.

On Thursday, a coroner found police were influenced by prevailing racist attitudes in the regional city and the investigation was deeply flawed from the beginning.

Craigie always believed racism marred the haphazard police investigation into the 17-year-old’s death on 16 January, 1988.

For years, he made it his mission to have the case re-examined.

The teenager’s body was discovered on the tracks early on a rainy Saturday morning, with a towel under his head.

A stolen Holden Torana was found crashed nearby.

An autopsy showed Mark died from a traumatic brain injury and police initially ruled he laid on the tracks either deliberately or in a dazed state.

His body was moved quickly after it was discovered, while the car and train were not forensically tested and several strong leads were not pursued, Deputy State Coroner Harriet Grahame found.

She said it was impossible to ignore the experience of Craigie and other Aboriginal people who lived in Tamworth in the 1980s, a time when members of the community were routinely called racist names and barred from renting houses.

The region’s police force had only recently come under scrutiny over the 1985 death in custody of Bruce Leslie, who suffered a skull fracture.

“I question how a police investigation could be quarantined from these attitudes,” Grahame said, delivering her findings at Tamworth court house.

“I find it inconceivable that such a superficial investigation would have taken place … had a young white teenager from the right side of town been found on the train tracks in similar circumstances.”

Grahame ruled out suicide, noting the placement of the towel.

She also found a theory about the possible involvement of local boxer Eddie Davis to be an “unsubstantiated rumour”, but that Mark’s close friend Glenn Mannion likely knew more about what happened that night.

Mannion gave evidence at the inquest and has always denied knowing more.

“I am satisfied that Mark’s death is suspicious in that some of the people involved did not or have not come forward,” Grahame added.

She said it was a “deep personal regret” the inquest did not result in a breakthrough for Mark’s heartbroken family.

The case was referred back to the unsolved homicide unit for recommended re-examination, including testing of a cigarette lighter found at the scene.

The Aboriginal Legal Service’s managing coronial advocate James Pender said Craigie’s advocacy was tireless and revealed entrenched racism within the police force.

“This coronial finding highlights the need for further truth-telling about its impact, as well as action to address it,” Pender said in a statement.

Before the findings, Mark’s sister Lorna Haines spoke of her enduring love for her charismatic big brother.

Haines quietly wept before she could speak.

Their parents died without knowing what happened to their “shining light” and their father continued to grapple with Mark’s death in his final years, she said.

“(I) would sometimes hear him call out Mark’s name in his sleep,” Haines said in her statement.

Craigie said he had done everything he could to seek some form of justice.

“Mark got the death sentence, the family got a life sentence,” Craigie said.

“We miss him deeply.”

Rumor Alert: Could Miley Cyrus Take Over Katy Perry’s Spot on American Idol?

In a surprising development, discussions are underway for Miley Cyrus to potentially step into Katy Perry’s shoes on American Idol, following Perry’s unexpected announcement of her departure this week.

Katy Perry, 39, has officially confirmed her decision to leave the beloved ABC competition, paving the way for a new celebrity to join the judging lineup alongside Lionel Richie, 74, and Luke Bryan, 47.

Producers are actively seeking a fresh face for the panel, with some executives advocating for the return of Jennifer Lopez, while others are keenly considering 31-year-old Miley Cyrus for the role.

Miley Cyrus, known for her bold performances such as the infamous twerking act with Robin Thicke in 2013 and other provocative antics, remains a figure of intrigue and controversy.

The US Sun reports that some top TV executives are hesitant, expressing concerns that Cyrus might be too daring for the family-oriented nature of the show.

The judge, 39, confirmed she is stepping down from the popular ABC show, leaving a slot open for a new star to join regulars Lionel Richie , 74, and Luke Bryan , 47 (Katy pictured on the show)

A source told the publication: ‘Names like Jennifer Lopez and Shania Twain… are in the frame because they have worked on the show before and are ‘safe’ faces, but there is a push for Miley

‘She is a younger star with an audience that has grown up with her as Hannah Montana and is a celebrated pop star in her own right.

‘Some senior figures at ABC have concerns about the risqué and open nature of Miley saying or doing something which is not necessarily family-friendly.’

Elsewhere, producers are hoping to get Jennifer Lopez back on the judging panel, according to show insiders, who claim bosses could consider shaking up the entire panel.

‘A return from the past is on the cards,’ a source told DailyMail.com exclusively. ‘J.Lo will be asked to come back. When people come back, things work… people like nostalgia, and people like Jen. It would be a big get to get her back.’

Lopez, 54, made her judging debut on season 10 in 2011. She returned to the role for seasons 11, 13, 14 and 15 – enjoying great feedback from fans during her run.

But the insider claimed producers are also considering other possibilities, including recruiting younger names to draw in a new demographic – and even Taylor Swift.

‘The show could also go younger and have a younger voice in the mix, because if they keep Luke and Lionel, they want someone who is a bit of a firecracker,’ they continued.

They added: ‘They would consider changing the entire panel if need be, even though they love Lionel and Luke.’

The pair have both served as judges since the revival in 2018.

‘Show host Ryan [Seacrest] has told higher-ups to go for someone that is out of the box if they do a complete overhaul,’ the source continued. ‘No one thought Steven Tyler was going to be what he was and he was a fun choice.

‘Right now every option is on the table, it will take a few months to figure out full details and a replacement, but Ryan is having them think outside the box.’

The source also claimed bosses are anticipating big name stars throwing their names into the ring, adding: ‘There are a lot of people who want this job, everyone will be considered, and they have a long time to figure it out.

‘They are going to enjoy the ride and honor Katy’s last year and announce her replacement around the finale or when they officially get the green light for a return next season.’

Producers aren’t afraid to shoot for the stars as the source stated that they would even extend an offer to Swift, 34.

‘She will be offered the job,’ they said. ‘That is a long shot.

‘They are just thinking about what would be the best-case scenario, namely to get the biggest star in the world. But they aren’t holding their breath on getting Taylor.’

Perry revealed she had quit American Idol during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday.

The multihyphenate had reportedly been plotting her exit from the show since last year, when it was revealed she felt repeatedly ‘thrown under the bus by producers’ who she believed were purposefully editing her to look like the ‘nasty judge.’

‘I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for Idol. I mean, I love Idol so much,’ she revealed on the late-night show.

‘It’s connected me with, like, the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse.’

The Grammy nominee pointed out it was her seventh season and former judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson all left after seven seasons too.

Show bosses feel no ill will toward Perry for her decision to step back after seven seasons, with the insider adding: ‘ABC and producers of Idol are OK with Katy Perry making this her swansong on the show.

‘They knew it was coming and to have her address it on another ABC show a few days before the season starts was no surprise.’

The source continued: ‘They are going to enjoy this season with Katy and she will always be welcomed back.’

In fact, her decision to quit is being seen as a great turning point for the series as there are hopes it could revitalize interest.

Bosses are reportedly going to reach out to Taylor Swift - but know it is a 'long shot'

Bosses are reportedly going to reach out to Taylor Swift – but know it is a ‘long shot’

The insider explained: ‘It gives the show a new life because this entire season there will be talk about who her replacement will be, if they will do a complete overhaul and the show will be in the news the entire time, which is great for ratings.

‘Then next season will be talked about because it will all be new. Look at what The Voice does all the time.’

Considering Perry is currently the highest paid judge with a reported salary of $25 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, the network will certainly need a big check to woo a performer of the same caliber, or an even bigger household name.

Lopez, who is gearing up for the release of her ninth studio album this week, has already been gaining traction online, with fans convinced she will make a grand return.

The Jenny From the Block singer enjoyed five seasons in total. She briefly quit in 2012 before returning in 2014, and was there for the final series before its cancelation in 2016.

Speaking previously about her decision to step down in 2012, she said: ‘I really learned a lot about myself. I had purpose.

‘And I just felt I’ve got to work on my acting more, my singing more, my dancing more, my everything. I just need to be better in every way.’

Explosive ‘Widow’s Bay’ Episode 10 Recap: Unraveling the Shocking ‘Offering’ Twist

“The weight of previous generations hangs over us like a nightmare,” Karl Marx once observed, a sentiment that resonates both in reality and within the eerie confines of Widow’s Bay. This series serves as an intricate metaphor for navigating the chaos inherited from our predecessors. In this world of horrors, shaped by ancestral failures, the price of liberation might be more than we can bear. As we grapple with this legacy, we risk transforming into the very monsters we seek to vanquish.

But that’s the analytical, outsider’s perspective. From the island’s viewpoint, the scenario is more like: Can you believe they’re doing human sacrifices based on the number of tolls from a cursed bell? And now Loftis is eternally trapped because his son Evan, a direct descendant of Richard Warren, means the sacrifices must continue as long as he’s alive?

And yet, amidst this grim narrative, there’s humor. To echo Stephen King: Dear Reader, that’s what makes captivating television.

Indeed, the season finale of Widow’s Bay (cheers for the Season 2 renewal!) presents a somber tale. Both Mayor Tom and Sheriff Bechir face the moral dilemma of potentially killing the kindly Ruth Livingston to save the island and their loved ones. It’s a classic ethical quandary: do nothing and let many perish, or take action and ensure the death of one individual?

When Tom broaches the topic with Ruth, without revealing the full context, her response likely resonates with many viewers. “Life is the runaway trolley — and I’m the lever,” she reflects. “You can’t control the misfortunes life throws at you, Tom! But if I pull that lever, it’s a choice, and I’m consciously deciding to end a life, something I could never bring myself to do.”

Widow's Bay, Ruth
Apple TV

She then shows him a lengthy Tennessee Williams quote she’s cross-stitched: “We live in a perpetually burning building, and what we must save from it, all the time, is love.” The abyss gazes also, as Nietzsche said, and we must not allow it in. By that standard, Tom and Bechir fail. Only dumb luck prevents them from being murderers.

And for no reason, too! Doped up by Tom, Ruth reveals that she had a secret daughter with a married man, whom she gave to him and his wife to raise as their own. That, of course, was Lauren, Tom’s late wife, making his son Evan Richard Warren’s final descendant, as it long appeared he would be. I don’t mind the predictable outcome given the unpredicted twist it took the show to get there, and the outstanding work done by K Callan as Ruth as a result.

Yet the horrors cease even though both Ruth and Evan are still alive, because the evil in the island has claimed a different victim instead. While panic grips the shelter because food, water, and light are running low, Dale discovers a cache of old film canisters and fires them up.

That’s how he learns the horrifying truth about Widow’s Bay: When the church bell tolls, that number of souls must be sacrificed to the island entity. As recently as this 1960s-ish film was made, it appeared to be the town’s official policy.

He doesn’t take it well.

So yes, that’s the purpose of the torture chair and subterranean doors that Evan and his jackass friends find beneath the shelter — which is where poor Kenny the custodian (Michael Malvesti) is dragged off into oblivion while Evan tries in vain to rescue him from the other side of the door.

And just like that, the storm lifts, and the panic with it.

I went back and checked, and the church bell tolls nine times in the middle of the night at the start of Episode 2. Unless my count is off, nine souls have met their end this season: Shep the fisherman, the Sea Hag, Rev. Bryce, Richard Warren, an EMT and a gas station attendant killed by the Boogeyman, the Boogeyman, Todd the Shaman, and Kenny the custodian. It’s possible my count is off, and I’m not sure if, uh, entities fit the requirements laid out in the “So, you’re an Offering” filmstrip.

If not, there’s the grimmer possibility: The bell is counting down, and only Kenny’s death counts. So it’s probably bad that as a peaceful Tom and Evan look out over the sunlit water after he tosses the Warren family’s heirloom brooch into the depths, the church bell rings eight times, huh?

Speaking only for my own preferences, I find sitcoms to be weak as a load-bearing structure. The whole project is often dragged down into sappiness when serious themes are broached, because the need to make the audience laugh undercuts the seriousness, even the pain, of those themes. It takes a show willing to really sit with that pain (Girls) or go in the complete opposite direction and offset the seriousness with absolute silliness (Scrubs) to make it work, and those kinds of balances are hard to strike.

How To Subdue Somebody sign in 'Widow's Bay'
Photo: Apple TV

Widow’s Bay makes it looks easy at an even higher difficulty setting. Creator Katie Dippold’s script for this episode alone layers black comedy (Dale’s horrified face after watching the filmstrips, the “HOW TO SUBDUE SOMEBODY” poster on the examining room wall), genuine scares (those eerie commands on the loudspeaker, the footage of human sacrifices in their underwear with bags over their heads), real human drama and ethical issues (the moral dilemma facing Tom and Bechir, the question of whether Ruth’s overwhelming goodness is mere naïveté or essential to remaining human), and the whole Karl Marx thing if you wanna read that deep into it, which I do. A lot of shows would simply collapse under all that weight.

But just as it has been from the start, Widow’s Bay is built to withstand that test. Dippold’s concept and writing, Hiro Murai’s directing, the perfect cast full of incredible actors creating instantly recognizable and indelible characters, the strength of the world-building as both a parody of Stephen King/H.P. Lovecraft cursed New England towns and as an exemplar of them…Widow’s Bay is well constructed in a way that leaves one reaching for comparisons like Mad Men or The Terror on one hand, Cheers or The Golden Girls on the other. I can’t wait until the next tourist season begins.

Elon Musk Calls for Legal Action Against Politicians Ignoring Grooming Gangs: New Report Sparks Controversy

0

Elon Musk has once again drawn global focus to the scandal of grooming gangs in Britain by highlighting a report funded by citizens that accuses the UK government of inadequately protecting children and teenagers from systematic sexual exploitation.

“The politicians who ignored the Rape of Britain must face prison,” Musk remarked on X on June 16. This comment came after Rupert Lowe, an MP from Great Yarmouth and the leader of the Restore Britain movement, unveiled an extensive independent report exceeding 200 pages on the issue.

The report, which is available online, was penned by barrister Graham Smith and released through Rupert Lowe’s independent inquiry into grooming gangs. It gained financial backing from public donations, amassing approximately $1.1 million from over 23,000 contributors as of Wednesday.

Lowe’s findings contend that many people in Britain have lost faith in the government’s ability to scrutinize its own shortcomings. This distrust stems from years of public outrage over grooming gang scandals in towns such as Rotherham, Rochdale, Telford, Oxford, and Oldham. In these areas, girls were groomed, raped, trafficked, and abused by groups of men, often of Pakistani descent, while authorities like the police, social services, and local councils repeatedly failed to take action.

Rupert Lowe, representing Great Yarmouth for Restore Britain, has released this independent report addressing the grooming gang scandal in the UK.

The Lowe report claims that grooming gangs “operated with either the active or passive consent of public authorities” and describes the scandal as a “rotting stain” on Britain’s history. Its recommendations include a sweeping overhaul of sentencing guidelines, life imprisonment starting points for organized child rape, deportation of foreign nationals convicted of group-based child sexual exploitation, a dedicated Crown Prosecution Service unit, stronger protections for child witnesses and possible private prosecutions against officials accused of failing victims.

“If they fail to take the necessary steps, we will deploy private prosecutions to obtain justice at last,” Lowe wrote in the report.

The report also makes claims about the ethnicity and religion of offenders, arguing that Muslim men, particularly men of Pakistani heritage, were overrepresented in organized grooming gang cases. It claims the number of victims could reach at least 250,000 when known local patterns are extrapolated nationally.

That figure has not been verified by the British government. Baroness Louise Casey’s government-commissioned 2025 audit found serious institutional failures and said authorities had often avoided difficult questions about ethnicity out of fear of racism accusations.

She wrote, “We found that the ethnicity of perpetrators is shied away from and is still not recorded for two-thirds of perpetrators, so we are unable to provide any accurate assessment from the nationally collected data.”

However, her report also stated that “Despite the lack of a full picture in the national data sets, there is enough evidence available in local police data in three police force areas which we examined which show disproportionate numbers of men from Asian ethnic backgrounds amongst suspects for group-based child sexual exploitation, as well as in the significant number of perpetrators of Asian ethnicity identified in local reviews and high-profile child sexual exploitation prosecutions across the country, to at least warrant further examination.”

Her audit also identified other perpetrators, including White British, European, African or Middle Eastern individuals.

Emma Schubart, a research fellow at the U.K.-based think tank the Henry Jackson Society, told News Media: “The government should take this report seriously. While some of its headline figures rely on extrapolation and parts of its methodology will rightly be challenged, it raises questions about grooming gangs, institutional failures and offender demographics that cannot simply be ignored.”

The British government has already launched a statutory national inquiry into grooming gangs across England and Wales. The inquiry was formally established in April 2026 and is expected to examine institutional failures, local and national responses, possible cover-ups and the role of ethnicity, religion and culture in group-based child sexual exploitation.

A Home Office spokesperson told News Media: “The grooming gangs scandal is one of the darkest moments and most shameful failures in our nation’s history, and we pay tribute to the immense bravery of those who have shared their experiences in the fight for justice.”

“We are determined to get victims and survivors the answers they deserve. That is why we have launched the Independent Inquiry into Grooming Gangs with legal powers to hold institutions to account for past failures, and backed the police with record funding to track down and put perpetrators behind bars,” the spokesperson said. “There will be no hiding place for those responsible.”

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told Parliament last year that more than 800 previously closed grooming and child sexual exploitation cases had been identified for formal review, with the figure expected to rise above 1,000. She also said the government would introduce mandatory reporting, aggravated offenses for grooming offenders and new ethnicity and nationality data collection.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer previously rejected attacks over his handling of the scandal, accusing critics of spreading “lies and misinformation” and saying some were more interested in politics than victims. Starmer has defended his record as former director of public prosecutions, saying he reopened closed cases and changed the prosecution approach to child sexual exploitation.

A central counterpoint to Lowe’s report is that Britain has already held multiple inquiries into child sexual abuse and grooming gangs, including the seven-year Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, and that the urgent priority should be implementing recommendations and prosecuting offenders rather than launching parallel investigations.

But others say the very existence of a privately funded inquiry shows a deeper collapse of public trust. They argue that previous investigations exposed failures but did not deliver enough accountability for victims or consequences for officials who ignored warnings.

“Perhaps the most striking finding is not in the report itself but in how it was funded,” Schubart told News Media. “The fact that more than 20,000 people contributed to a citizen-funded inquiry reflects a growing lack of confidence that public institutions are willing to confront the issue fully. Whether you agree with every conclusion or not, that loss of trust should concern policymakers just as much as the report’s findings.”

The issue has also drawn public criticism from the Trump administration. The State Department previously warned the U.K. over its handling of the grooming gangs scandal, saying thousands of girls had suffered “unspeakable abuse” before authorities acted.

Lowe said that the government’s statutory inquiry risks becoming another long process that delays accountability, comparing it to other British scandals where official reckoning came only years later.

US Gas Prices Plummet Below $4 as US-Iran Deal Reopens Vital Strait of Hormuz

0

For the first time in over five months, gas prices in the United States have dipped below the $4 per gallon mark.

According to data from the American Automobile Association, the national average for regular gasoline declined to $3.999 per gallon on Thursday, showing a reduction of nearly 3 cents compared to the day before.

This decrease in fuel costs coincides with the anticipated reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. This development comes after the US and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding to resolve the conflict that had previously disrupted global oil distribution.

The last occasion the US saw its national average gas price fall below $4 was on March 30.

GasBuddy noted that the national average price had already dropped to approximately $3.98 by early Thursday, following a dip below the $4 threshold on Sunday.

Indiana has the lowest statewide average at $3.40 a gallon and is among 28 states where average gas prices are now below $4.

President Trump signed the US-Iran memorandum of understanding on Wednesday over dinner at the Palace of Versailles in France.

Iran’s closure of the key shipping route in late February cut off roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply, sending crude oil and gasoline prices sharply higher.

Gas prices climbed above $4 nationwide in late March after most shipping through the strait was blocked.

The national average peaked at $4.56 a gallon on May 21 before beginning a steady decline as expectations grew that negotiations would lead to the waterway reopening.

Americans have spent about $46 billion more on gasoline since the start of the conflict, Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, said earlier this week, according to Reuters.
