Lionel Messi Sets World Cup Milestone, Matching Goal Record with Spectacular Hat-Trick in Argentina’s 3-0 Victory Over Algeria

0

Two decades ago to this very day, a youthful and long-haired 18-year-old, heralded as Argentina’s next football prodigy, made a memorable World Cup debut off the bench in Leipzig, Germany.

In a mere 14 minutes, this rising star of La Albiceleste introduced himself to the global stage with flair, setting up a goal for Hernan Crespo and finding the net himself during a commanding 6-0 victory over Serbia and Montenegro. This feat crowned him as the youngest scorer for Argentina in World Cup history. Capturing the moment’s significance, Diego Maradona — Argentina’s revered legend — was seen ecstatically celebrating in the stands as he witnessed the potential successor to his legacy.

This prodigious talent was Lionel Messi.

Fast forward to Tuesday night, where Argentina’s captain lit up the World Cup once more. With a stellar hat-trick, he matched the legendary Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 career goals in the tournament. Messi achieved this in his characteristic electrifying style, helping the reigning world champions launch their title defense with a flawless 3-0 victory over Algeria.

The pressing question as this World Cup commenced was clear: What more can Messi deliver from his storied career?

The 38-year-old showed he still has plenty of magic in a masterful display in Kansas City

We needed just one game to find out. In fact, we needed just 17 minutes here in Kansas City. That was when La Pulga – Spanish for ‘The Flea’ – lifted a boisterous sea of blue-and-white at Arrowhead for the first time by unleashing a ferocious curling effort into the top-right corner.

Messi, a reserved and modest character throughout his storied career, had as big of a grin on his face as ever as he wheeled away in celebration, with both arms stretched out as if to say: ‘How could anyone ever doubt me?’

Argentina got through the rest of the half in cruise control, yet it was their iconic leader who provided their brightest spark every time he received the ball. In the 37th minute he proved those spellbinding feet haven’t lost their speed or intelligence when he weaved past two players and released Lautaro Martinez in the box, only for the chance to go begging.

Towards the end of the first half Algeria upped the ante and tested Emiliano Martinez for the first time since Fares Chaibi had a goal ruled out for offside in the eighth minute, not long after Messi himself had seen an early opener disallowed.

There was enough cause for optimism in the Algeria locker room at the break. But 15 minutes into the second half, any hopes of spoiling the Argentine party in Kansas City – where the famous home of the NFL’s Chiefs was flooded by thousands of Messi’s devoted followers – were dashed by the great man himself.

This one wasn’t a strike to salivate over, with Messi pouncing on the rebound after Alexis Mac Allister’s shot was saved by Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane to double the world champions’ lead. His disciples hardly cared as they serenaded their talisman, their hero with deafening affection.

And if those who had paid the big bucks to witness his brilliance in the flesh still weren’t satisfied – although that surely can’t be possible – he etched his name even further into the history books by racing through on goal and tucking the ball home to equal Klose’s World Cup record and seal the most satisfying of 3-0 victories.

Just like he was 20 years ago, the late Maradona will be smiling down on his fellow great tonight as he continues to treat us to his mastery.

Argentina still the team to beat

There will be tougher tests on the road to a potential second straight World Cup win, with Algeria providing very little threat themselves in a disappointing display, yet Messi’s three-goal heroics tonight proved Argentina will take some stopping again this summer.

With the energy of Enzo Fernandez, Rodrigo de Paul and Alexis Mac Allister, who looked back to his best at times following an underwhelming season with Liverpool, providing some much-needed legs behind him, the Barcelona legend has the platform to thrive on the biggest stage once more.

Aside from the heroics of his captain this was a controlled, dominant showing from the rest of Lionel Scaloni’s side. Messi was simply the difference.

As a team it still feels like they can go up two or three more gears, which is a worrying prospect for the other leading contenders this summer.

More history awaits for Leo

With just one goal required, it is almost a foregone conclusion that Messi will break the record for most career World Cup goals at what will surely prove his final tournament.

Klose has long held the record of 16, and barring a disaster that tremendous feat will be bumped down to second by the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.

In fact, if Kylian Mbappe keeps up his fine form for France – with his two goals in their 3-1 win over Senegal earlier today moving him up to 14 – the German legend could find himself third.

Regardless, Messi will surely make more history in the group stage with just one goal required to edge himself in front. Oh, and he’s also now set the record for featuring at the most World Cups with six, too.

Even Messi can’t fill FIFA’s stadiums

The topic of extortionate ticket prices and resulting empty seats at nearly every World Cup stadium has already been a fierce one this summer.

And even the presence of one of the greatest players in the sport’s history wasn’t enough to fill up Arrowhead on Tuesday night.

There were a depressing amount of empty seats all the way around the upper tier of the stadium throughout the game, while there were even quite a few directly opposite the TV camera in the lower section, which will have gone down like a lead balloon for FIFA.

If the superstar appeal of Messi can’t stop it, expect swathes of empty seats throughout this tournament as the matches increase in both importance and, as a result, price.

Child-free Choices: An Insight into the Rising Trend in Australia

As the concept of family evolves, more Australians are opting for a life without children. The SBS Insight episode “No Kids, No Problems?” delves into this growing trend, examining the reasons behind this decision and the societal perceptions surrounding it. You can catch the episode on SBS On Demand for a deeper understanding.

For some, like myself, the decision to remain child-free is a longstanding personal conviction. I can’t recall the exact moment when I decided against having children, but the feeling has been with me since I was young. It’s possible that my upbringing—being the eldest in a single-parent family with caregiving responsibilities—shaped my view. In many ways, I feel as though I have already experienced the role of a parent.

Observing friends and family members who had children at a young age, and witnessing the challenges they faced, only reinforced my desire to pursue a different path. The realities of raising children seemed daunting and unappealing, and I found myself unable to relate to those who yearned for parenthood.

The notion of having children has always left me feeling uneasy, and my experiences have solidified my decision to lead a child-free life. This choice, however, is not without its stigmas, as societal expectations often pressure individuals towards traditional family structures. As more people choose to remain child-free, perhaps it’s time to embrace a broader understanding of what family can mean.

But there was one time, just over a decade ago, when parenthood was a looming threat.

My period was a few days late, and I had a funny feeling about it, so I took a pregnancy test. It was positive.

I didn’t feel excited. It only confirmed what I already felt: I didn’t want children.

I didn’t hesitate and booked an appointment with the clinic straight away to have an abortion.

I didn’t feel torn or unsure. There was no “maybe this is meant to be”.

I knew I didn’t want to go ahead with the pregnancy, and I didn’t need time to think about it.

‘I felt like my body wasn’t mine’

The two weeks leading up to the procedure were horrible.

I was uncomfortable in my own body; tired, bloated, nauseous — all of it.

I felt like my body wasn’t mine, like a parasite had taken over. That was the hardest part. I just wanted it out of me. There was no connection to it at all.

That period only reinforced my decision.

I didn’t want to be a parent — not then, not ever.

I felt such relief after the abortion.

Relief that my body was mine again. Relief that I had the choice, and I could make that decision for myself.

I also felt proud.

Proud that I did what was right for me. Proud that I accessed the care I needed.

I’ve never felt regret — if anything, the whole experience just solidified what I’d always known.

And it gave me the confidence to say I don’t want kids without shame or guilt.

‘A practical decision’

Just over two years ago, I had my fallopian tubes removed — a procedure I had wanted for a long time.

I didn’t do it earlier because of doctors’ pushback that I’d heard of from family and friends who had been told no — even when they already had children.

I just felt like it’d be even more of a fight if I asked.

But when I finally asked a couple of years ago, I didn’t get any pushback at all.

Both my abortion and tubal ligation (which is a permanent form of contraception) were positive experiences in terms of the care I received — and my GP and specialists were supportive.

The tubal ligation was a practical decision; I didn’t want to rely on contraception or risk another pregnancy.

I was also diagnosed with endometriosis at the same time, so it was a no-brainer for me.

The procedure has given me certainty, and it brings me peace knowing I will never have children.

I don’t have to explain my choice

Navigating other people’s opinions about this choice hasn’t always been easy.

People say, ‘you’ll change your mind’, ‘you’ll regret it’, or ‘you just haven’t met the right person’.

It just feels dismissive — like they don’t trust that I know myself.

I used to feel like I had to explain my decision, but I don’t anymore. I know what’s right for me.

I think people project their own beliefs or fears, but it doesn’t mean I must take that on.

I understand what it takes to raise kids — the responsibility, the emotional labour, the lifelong commitment — and I’ve never wanted a part in it.

I’ve never felt like I’m missing out. My life has always felt full without children.

‘I don’t want to be guilted’

Still, I’ve felt a lot of pressure around the idea of ‘the village’, especially as a woman.

It feels like there’s an expectation that if you’re child-free, you should be available to help out and step up…but no one really asks if that’s something you want to do. I’ve felt this — even when it hasn’t been asked directly.

And even as a teenager, I didn’t like the idea of being an aunty.

These thoughts don’t mean I don’t care; it just means I don’t want the responsibility or expectation.

I want the choice. If I want to be involved, I will. If I don’t, I don’t want to be guilted.

Of course, if something serious happens, I’ll show up. But I don’t want my life structured around other people’s children.

I don’t feel like I’m missing out

My life now is quiet in the best way. I have space and time. I can focus on my health, my work, and the things that make me happy.

I like being only responsible for myself, and I can make decisions without thinking about a child — there’s freedom in that.

I’m not living a life that feels expected of me; I’m living one that feels right.

Having an abortion didn’t change who I was; it just clarified it. It gave me certainty. Having my tubes removed gave me even more certainty.

I feel calm and settled in my decision. I don’t feel like I’m missing out. I’ve chosen the life that fits me.

I trust myself. I trust that I know what’s right for me, and I’ve built a life around that for me and no one else.

Socialist Candidate Shakes Up DC Mayoral Race, Set to Challenge Trump in Groundbreaking Election

0

A democratic socialist is on the verge of becoming the next mayor of Washington, DC, even as President Donald Trump has threatened to impose federal control over the capital.

Early results indicate that mayoral candidate Janeese Lewis George is leading with just over 50% of the votes. Her closest competitor, former city council member Kenyan McDuffie, trails behind at 36%, with more than 60% of the ballots counted.

Voters faced a decision: support Lewis George, a candidate reminiscent of New York City’s Zohran Mamdani, which could provoke a Republican President intent on challenging DC’s Home Rule, or opt for McDuffie, a more centrist Democrat favored by business and restaurant leaders.

McDuffie, who previously identified as an independent, rejoined the Democratic Party to pursue his mayoral ambitions.

The electorate chose to send a message to the President by leaning towards Lewis George.

‘I wouldn’t like it,’ Trump said Thursday in the Oval Office, when asked about the prospect of a Lewis George win.

‘Maybe we take back Washington and run it on a federal basis. We won’t put up with it,’ he said.

Speaking to supporters from U Street’s Howard Theatre, part of the historic ‘Black Broadway,’ Lewis George took a veiled swipe at Trump’s comments Tuesday night.

On Thursday in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump said he ‘won’t put up with’ the election of democratic socialist DC mayoral candidate Janeese Lewis George

‘If there was ever any doubt. Let it now be laid to rest. It is the people of DC who elect the mayor of DC,’ the democratic socialist said to cheers.

If Lewis George remains above 50 percent, she wins the Democratic primary outright.

If she dips below, some votes from less popular candidates will be reshuffled, as DC has implemented a ranked-choice voting system starting this cycle.

Still, Lewis George remains in a strong position to win.

As in liberal California, many voters in DC use mail-in ballots and can postmark them as late as Election Day.

Returns were delayed for hours after polls were supposed to close at 8 pm ET on Tuesday.

Whoever wins the Democratic mayoral primary is a shoo-in for the general election due to the city’s overwhelmingly Democratic voter base.

In the 2024 presidential election, for example, the Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, won 90.3 percent of the vote to Trump’s 6.5 percent.

The last time the capital city had a Republican mayor, it was still the party associated with President Abraham Lincoln, with Republican Sayles Jenks Bowen serving as mayor from 1868 to 1870.

Should DC have more control over its future, or does its status demand federal oversight?

Trump would have to go to Congress to strip away DC Home Rule.

The District of Columbia Home Rule Act of 1973 allows DC residents the right to elect a mayor and a 13-member city council.

Because DC is a federal district and not a state, the nearly 700,000 tax-paying residents don’t get to elect members of Congress.

Still, Congress ultimately gets to decide what local laws go into effect and must approve the DC budget.

Historically, Republicans in Congress have attempted to meddle in policies supported by the city’s liberal voters – including abortion funding, marijuana legalization and firearms restrictions.

A statehood movement in DC has taken root, with a Democrat-led House of Representatives passing a statehood bill in 2021, but it went nowhere in the Senate, with national Republicans largely against granting DC statehood because it would all but guarantee two Democratic senators and a Democratic US House member.

DC’s current Democratic Mayor, Muriel Bowser, decided to bow out after three terms, despite not being term-limited.

She served through all of Trump’s first term and will end her tenure as Trump hits the two-year mark of his second.

Bowser has maintained a stable relationship with the Trump administration during the President’s second term.

While they clashed during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, she’s ensured DC’s autonomy by making concessions such as paving over the large Black Lives Matter street mural on 16th Street NW directly in front of the White House.

She also walked a delicate line when Trump ordered the National Guard onto DC streets, praising the anti-crime initiatives while criticizing Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s actions.

DCLM Daily Manna 17 June 2026 — Discovery Through Questions

DCLM Daily Manna 17 June 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Discovery Through Questions

TOPIC: Discovery Through Questions (DCLM Daily Manna 17 June 2026)

KEY VERSE: “And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ” (Mark 8:29).

TEXT: Mark 8:27-30 (KJV)

27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am?

28 And they answered, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.

29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.

30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

Bible scholars reveal that there are over 3,300 questions covering various topics and aspects of human endeavour in the Scripture. Some questions are open-ended, reflective, and probing (which was used by the Lord in our text today). Questioning techniques are invaluable tools for finding out or revealing some truths. They help uncover hidden truths, understand the thoughts of the heart, and determine a learner ’s level of understanding and acquired knowledge. When misgivings, misunderstandings, or stereotyped ideas about a subject arise, questions are beneficial. Questions have been powerful tools for aiding discoveries and establishing profound truths.

In today’s passage, we have a practical instance. Christ knew there were varied perceptions about His person and would not leave His disciples in confusion. He, therefore, asked them this all-important question in our text, so they could see the truth on which the Church is built. The religious oligarchy queried the messiahship of Christ. After all, they knew His parents, siblings, and family’s business. No wonder they presumed that He was not genuine, but working against the Old Testament traditions, and they were determined to eliminate Him. They wrongly assumed that He worked miracles through the prince of devils, Beelzebub, and not the power of God, denying His miraculous power. The Lord Jesus used the questioning technique to clear doubts and wrong notions about Himself. He was not John the Baptist, Elias or one of the prophets, but Christ the Messiah, as confessed by Simon Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit.

What men know about Christ determines what they receive from God. Christ is the truth personified. Ignorance about His person implies spiritual blindness, darkness, condemnation and death. In contemporary times, people still doubt the validity of scriptural truth about Christ’s identity and deity. They turn a deaf ear to the teaching of Christ as the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world, and therefore is Lord of all. They erroneously hold to religion, which lacks the power to save from sin and deliver from the activities of the powers of darkness. They abandon the truth but believe in lies and fables, eventually leading to their perdition.

The Lord has not changed; and even today, He still questions all: “What do people say about me? What do you say about me?” The answer is obvious, if you are saved and your sins cleansed. It remains for such believers who have experienced His saving grace, to share their experience with others who have not tasted the benefits of the sacrifice of Christ, so they too can be saved, and granted an eternal abode in His kingdom.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Who Christ is to you paves the way to your eternal habitation.

Discover Barack Obama’s Inspiring Journey from Community Organizer to Historic Presidency as Chicago’s Obama Center Debuts

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — Barack Obama’s journey from obscurity to the presidency is often described as rapid and remarkable by those close to him. However, well before his groundbreaking presidential bid, some associates already saw the potential for greatness in him.

During his U.S. Senate campaign, Obama remarked, “Indeed, I may lack personal wealth or a renowned surname, but what I possess is an unyielding passion.”

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Obama’s fervor for politics was evident even before 2003, when he was merely a state senator with aspirations for the U.S. Senate.

David Axelrod, who played a vital role as the chief strategist for Obama’s presidential run and later served as a senior advisor, recounted a prediction from political activist Bettylu Salzman. She observed Obama during his days as a community organizer in the early ’90s.

Axelrod recalled, “She mentioned, ‘He’s organizing this voter registration drive, yet I have a strong sense he might become the first Black president of the United States.’”

But Obama’s political rise began with baby steps. The first: getting elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996. After serving two terms, he challenged incumbent Congressman Bobby Rush and lost the 2000 primary by a humbling two-to-one margin.

“And many people would have quit at that point, and he could have easily done that and folded up his tent, and he came he came back from that,” said former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

And what a comeback it would turn out to be, starting when Obama hit the campaign trail in 2003 in the race for U.S. Senate.

“The main thing you get out of this is the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful day and shake some hands and talk to voters and hopefully they start remembering your name over time,” Obama said.

Obama would win the 2004 Democratic Senate Primary shortly after that getting a life-changing invitation.

“The next senator from the state of Illinois, Barack Obama,” said Sen. Dick Durbin as he introduced Obama.

Obama gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention that summer in Boston.

“And as he started to speak, you could see more and more people paying attention, and then people are up on their feet, and I looked around, I saw people with tears rolling down their cheeks,” Axelrod said.

“There is not a liberal America and a conservative America; there is the United States of America,” Obama said.

That speech transformed Obama into a political superstar.

“I’d say he hit a grand slam homerun, he has the passion, he has the commitment, he spoke to the American public,” said then-Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

“If you look at all the speeches in terms of that have hit it out of the ballpark, from Jesse Jackson to Barack Obama, it’s always been a speech of unity,” said Political Consultant Del Marie Cobb.

Durbin frequently campaigned with Obama, and in late 2006, said he offered him some advice.

“So, I sat down with him. I said, ‘You ought to run for president. You’re young enough. If you lose, you’ll have another chance, but you got something special, buddy, and I want to help you do it,’” Durbin said.

Obama launched his presidential campaign in February of 2007 on the steps of the old historic state capital in Springfield. His candidacy offered hope with the slogan, “Yes, we can.”

Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel served as Obama’s chief of staff and says Obama was the change people were looking for.

“Almost every president scratches the itch that the predecessor leaves,” Emanuel said.

On election night, Obama hosted a watch party in Grant Park, attended by an estimated 240,000 people who witnessed history as America elected its first Black president.

“We are and always will be the United States of America,” Obama said.

“That’s one of the nights I’ll never forget, and just the joy and feeling a part of that,” Duncan said.

Many of those ABC7 spoke to see the opening of the Obama Presidential Center as a crowning moment for his legacy. Obama who, as a candidate made famous the phrase “Yes, we can,” will now be the former president who can once again tell people “Yes, we did.”

Rhapsody Of Realities 17 June 2026: The Real Source Of Temptation

Rhapsody Of Realities 17 June 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): The Real Source Of Temptation

TOPIC: The Real Source Of Temptation (Rhapsody of Realities 17 June 2026)

But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed (James 1:14).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

The Word of God reveals something profound about temptation and how it comes. Temptation doesn’t begin outside; it begins from within. We just read it: “…every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust….” It didn’t say by someone else’s actions or external pressure; it says you’re tempted when you’re lured by your own lust.

That means the source is internal. Only what your heart already craves can tempt you. So, when people fall into temptation, it’s not the environment that caused it but the inclination of their heart. It’s not what they were exposed to but what they were already attracted to.

The Bible gives us the progression: “Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James 1:15). First, there’s attraction, then contemplation, followed by conception, and finally, manifestation. It doesn’t start with the act; it begins with what was allowed from within.

That’s why the focus should always be on your heart. The Bible says to guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life (Proverbs 4:23). It’s about what you permit to take root within you. Many try to avoid temptation by avoiding situations; while that may be helpful, the real issue is the condition of the heart.

Aman is not tempted simply because something exists; he is tempted because something in him responds. This is why blaming others for your slips, errors, or temptations is disingenuous. The Scripture is clear: you’re tempted when you’re drawn away by what already has a hold on your heart.

That means the responsibility is personal. And this isn’t to bring condemnation but understanding, because once the source is understood, the solution becomes clear. You don’t deal with temptation through fear; you overcome it with the light of God’s Word and by walking in the Spirit. When you walk in the Spirit, you will not fulfil the desires of the flesh: “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for the light of your Word that gives me understanding. I’m not led by wrong desires; I walk in the Spirit and manifest the nature of righteousness. I live above every influence of the flesh, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

FURTHER STUDY

James 1:13-15 (NIV)
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; [14] but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. [15] Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Galatians 5:16-21 (NIV)
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. [17] For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. [18] But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. [19] The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; [20] idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions [21] and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Matthew 5:27-28 (KJV)
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: [28] But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

“I had a medical, you remember back in May? I disappeared off the other week and I had a biopsy and it is cancer and it’s aggressive, but it’s really early so the treatment will be, you know…

“I was praying we could get the harvest done and then I could go and get some treatment but it’s going to be slap bang in the middle.”

Kaleb, wiping away tears, then said, “Look after yourself, you go and do… if you need anything just ring.”

Later in the programme, Clarkson reflected on what a gruelling year it had been, speaking candidly to Kaleb, his girlfriend Lisa, and his two other members of staff.

“We started the year and I had coronary heart disease and ended it with me with cancer,” he explained.

“We can dwell as much as we like on all the bad things that have happened on the farm, but I think it’s better now, at the end of the year, to focus on things that have happened that are good.”

Kaleb asked, “When will we know the treatments worked?” In response to Kaleb’s tears, the Who Wants to be a Millionaire host jests at him to “cheer up”.

“Not for another few weeks. Come on cheer up, it probably did work.”

The emotional episode has now been made available on Prime Video.

Prior to the episodes being released, the TV presenter cautioned viewers that they might prove to be “a difficult watch”.

He posted on Instagram: “Ordinarily we try to keep the show bucolic and charming and cheerful. But the final two episodes which drop in the middle of the night tonight are none of those things really.”

In the clip, he took a deep breath and added: “They’re a difficult watch. They’re really, really difficult.”

Following his announcement to the farmers, Clarkson is subsequently shown in a hospital bed awaiting surgery.

Nevertheless, Clarkson appears to maintain an optimistic outlook as he expresses hope of returning for a sixth season, before quipping that should the treatment prove unsuccessful ‘take care everyone’.

FEC Orders Eric Swalwell to Refund $30K in Donations Amid Scandal

0

As the competition to find his successor heats up, former Representative Eric Swalwell is under pressure from federal regulators to return over $30,000 in general election contributions. Failure to do so could lead to an audit and enforcement actions against him.

The Federal Election Commission issued a warning on June 15 through a letter to Swalwell’s campaign committee, emphasizing that these funds must be refunded since he is no longer pursuing public office.

This action by the FEC adds to the mounting pressure on Swalwell, who is entangled in various financial and personal controversies.

Meanwhile, the controversies surrounding him are intensifying as voters in the San Francisco Bay Area prepare to select his successor. This decision is being made during a special election to fill the seat he vacated.

The election is occurring in California’s 14th Congressional District, which incorporates East Bay areas like Fremont, Hayward, and Livermore.

As of Tuesday night, with 80% of ballots counted, Democrat Aisha Wahab led the field with 42.6% of the vote, short of the 50% needed to avoid a runoff under California’s top-two system.

Trailing the frontrunner, Melissa Hernandez held second place with 16.8% of the vote (17,619 votes), followed by Rakhi Israni Singh in third at 13.3% (13,946 votes).

Both are Democrats.

Wahab is considered a staunchly progressive, left-leaning liberal.

The district leans very left and has long been considered easy territory for Democrats.

The top two candidates from the field will advance to an Aug. 18 runoff election.

The special election comes as Swalwell continues to face escalating scrutiny following his departure from Congress and his suspended California gubernatorial bid.

The FEC set a response deadline of July 20 for Swalwell to return the campaign funds and cautioned that failure to comply could trigger an audit and further penalties.

The FEC noted that general election contributions cannot be retained once a candidate exits a race and must be properly returned, putting immediate compliance demands on the campaign.

The warning lands on top of already heavy scrutiny surrounding Swalwell’s failed California gubernatorial bid, where filings show significant campaign spending, including nearly $38,807 paid between April 19 and May 16 to North Hollywood-based transportation and security operator Darly Meyer and his CYD Global Car Service, which advertises chauffeured vehicles and executive protection.

Those same filings also show the campaign has spent substantial sums on legal fees, totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars, as Swalwell faces multiple ongoing inquiries tied to misconduct allegations.

Separately, Swalwell has been hit with a wave of allegations involving his personal conduct, including claims tied to private Snapchat communications, explicit messages, and inappropriate exchanges with women during his marriage.

Former colleagues have previously described him as a “Jekyll and Hyde” figure, contrasting his public political image with his private behavior.

He has also faced allegations of serious sexual misconduct, including accusations of sexual assault and rape made by multiple women.

Swalwell has not been charged with any crime.

The allegations first became public in April 2026, prompting him to suspend his California governor campaign and leave Congress.

No court dates have been scheduled, and he has not been formally indicted.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, including its Sex Crimes Division, are reportedly reviewing evidence and conducting early-stage interviews with accusers.

Revitalize Your Core: 5 Effective Standing Exercises for a Flatter Stomach After 60

0

If you’re over 60 and aiming for a flatter stomach, it’s time to consider alternatives to traditional ab machines. While these devices may seem effective, they often don’t engage your core in the comprehensive way that standing exercises can. Your core is vital for maintaining balance, stabilizing during squats, managing rotations, and coordinating movements between your hips and shoulders—functions best trained while standing.

Ab machines might isolate your abdominal muscles, but they don’t demand the balance and coordination that your core requires in daily activities. By incorporating standing exercises, you reintroduce these essential elements. Using equipment like dumbbells, kettlebells, or resistance bands can add intensity, requiring your core to maintain stability and posture throughout each movement.

As a coach focused on core training, my goal isn’t to find the most elaborate ab exercise. Instead, I prioritize moves that encourage your core to perform its primary functions: bracing, resisting rotation, controlling the ribs and pelvis, and supporting larger movements. This method proves more beneficial than countless machine crunches, especially when combined with walking, strength training, and a nutrition plan aimed at fat loss.

Gym machines can help you work your abs, but they often take away the balance and full-body control your stomach needs during real life. Standing work brings those pieces back in. A dumbbell, kettlebell, or resistance band provides enough load to challenge your muscles, while your core must keep your posture strong from start to finish.

When I coach stomach-focused training, I’m not looking for the fanciest ab move in the room. I’m looking for exercises that make the core do its real job: brace, resist twisting, control the ribs and pelvis, and support bigger movement. That approach gives you more value than another round of machine crunches, especially when you pair the work with walking, strength training, and nutrition that supports fat loss.

These five standing exercises blend core work and compound strength. You’ll squat, carry, press, rotate, and resist rotation using dumbbells, kettlebells, and bands. The result is a stomach-focused routine that trains your abs while also engaging your legs, glutes, shoulders, back, and grip.

Goblet Squat

Goblet squats train your legs and glutes while your core works hard to keep your torso upright. Holding a dumbbell or kettlebell at your chest forces your abs to brace, keeping your ribs down and your body from folding forward. That makes the movement a strong stomach-flattening option because you’re training large muscles while keeping your midsection engaged the entire time. Compared with gym machines, goblet squats give your core a real job while your lower body builds strength.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell at your chest.
  3. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  4. Lower into a squat by bending your hips and knees.
  5. Drive through your feet to return to standing.
  6. Squeeze your glutes at the top.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps. Rest for 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Box goblet squats, pause goblet squats, tempo goblet squats.

Form Tip: Keep the weight close to your chest and stay tall through your torso.

Band Pallof Press

The band Pallof press trains your abs and obliques to resist rotation. As you press the band away from your chest, the tension tries to pull your torso sideways, and your core has to keep you square. That bracing makes the Pallof press one of the best standing core drills after 60 because it builds strength you can use when carrying groceries, reaching, turning, or walking with uneven loads. Move slowly and make your waist do the stabilizing instead of letting the band twist you around.

Muscles Trained: Core, obliques, shoulders, glutes.

How to Do It:

  1. Anchor a resistance band at chest height.
  2. Stand sideways to the anchor point with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  3. Hold the band at your chest with both hands.
  4. Brace your core and keep your torso facing forward.
  5. Press your hands straight out without rotating.
  6. Bring your hands back to your chest with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps per side. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Pallof press holds, split stance Pallof presses, overhead Pallof presses.

Form Tip: Keep your ribs down and resist the band as it pulls you sideways.

Suitcase Carry

Suitcase carries train your abs and obliques by loading one side of your body at a time. The dumbbell or kettlebell tries to pull you toward the weight, and your core has to fight to keep your shoulders and hips level. That makes the carry a strong choice for flattening your stomach because your midsection braces under load while you walk. It also trains your grip, shoulders, glutes, and posture, giving you more total-body value than most seated ab machines.

Muscles Trained: Abs, obliques, grip, shoulders, glutes.

How to Do It:

  1. Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell in one hand.
  2. Stand tall with your shoulders level.
  3. Brace your core and keep your ribs down.
  4. Walk forward with controlled steps.
  5. Avoid leaning toward the weight.
  6. Switch hands and repeat on the other side.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 carries of 30 to 45 seconds per side. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between carries.

Best Variations: Lighter suitcase carries, heavier suitcase carries, suitcase marches.

Form Tip: Walk tall and keep your shoulders level throughout.

Dumbbell Squat to Press

Dumbbell squat to presses train your legs, glutes, shoulders, triceps, and core in one movement. Your lower body drives the squat, your upper body finishes the press, and your abs have to brace so your lower back doesn’t arch as the weights go overhead. That combination makes the exercise great for building lean muscle and increasing total-body effort, two factors that support a flatter stomach as body fat decreases. Use weights you can control and keep the rep smooth from the squat to the press.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, shoulders, triceps, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold dumbbells at shoulder height.
  2. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Lower into a squat with control.
  4. Drive through your feet to stand tall.
  5. Press the dumbbells overhead as you finish standing.
  6. Lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps. Rest for 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Single dumbbell squat to press, slower squat to press, squat to push press.

Form Tip: Keep your ribs down as the dumbbells move overhead.

Standing Band Woodchop

Standing band woodchops train your abs and obliques through rotation while your hips and shoulders move together. The band provides steady tension to your core as you pull it across your body, and your midsection has to control the path rather than letting your arms yank the band around. That makes woodchopping useful for stomach-focused training because it builds rotational strength in a standing position. Stronger rotation control helps with reaching, turning, lifting, and moving with more confidence.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, abs, shoulders, glutes.

How to Do It:

  1. Anchor a resistance band at shoulder height or slightly above.
  2. Stand sideways to the anchor point with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  3. Hold the band with both hands near one shoulder.
  4. Brace your core and pull the band diagonally across your body.
  5. Finish with your hands near the opposite hip.
  6. Return to the starting position with control and switch sides after your reps.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps per side. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Low-to-high woodchops, high-to-low woodchops, shorter-range woodchops.

Form Tip: Rotate through your torso and hips together without twisting through your lower back.

How to Make Standing Ab Work Flatten Your Stomach After 60

Standing ab exercises work best when they fit into a bigger body-composition plan. Your stomach flattens as overall body fat comes down, and that takes consistent movement, smart nutrition, and enough strength work to maintain lean muscle. These exercises help because they train your core while also engaging larger muscles.

  • Use compound movements for more total work: Goblet squats and squat-to-presses engage your legs, glutes, shoulders, and core. More muscle involvement yields a stronger training effect than small, isolated ab moves.
  • Train your core to brace and resist movement: Pallof presses and suitcase carries teach your midsection to stay strong under tension. That kind of core strength carries over into daily movement.
  • Control your rotation: Woodchops work best when your abs guide the movement. Slow the reps down and avoid pulling with your arms.
  • Keep the load challenging but clean: Dumbbells, kettlebells, and bands should make you work without pulling you out of position. If your posture breaks, lighten the load.
  • Pair strength training with daily activity: Walking, stairs, cycling, and regular movement help burn the calories needed for fat loss. Strength builds the muscle, and movement helps the stomach-flattening process along.

A flatter stomach after 60 doesn’t come from chasing one perfect machine. Build your routine around loaded carries, smart core drills, and full-body strength moves that make your abs work while the rest of your body joins in.
