Polls suggest the vote wont go ahead, but echoes of Brexit are apparent.
On the drilling platform where Mathew Anthes works, Alberta’s intense local pride is unmistakable. Workers sport hard hats adorned with the provincial flag, noticeably omitting the national emblem of Canada.
“People here take pride in being Albertan, but you won’t often hear them express the same sentiment about being Canadian,” Anthes noted.
Originally from Canberra, Anthes spent much of his life in Melbourne before relocating in 2018 to Rocky Mountain House, a small town nestled in Alberta, Canada.
In line with many residents in the area, he is employed in the oil and gas sector. Alberta is home to nearly all of Canada’s oil reserves, a fact that fuels the ambitions of those advocating for provincial independence, who believe these resources could sustain Alberta as a standalone entity.
The idea of “Albexit” traces back to the 1973 oil crisis, a time when tensions between the locals and the federal government flared over the distribution of wealth generated by fossil fuels.

In 2026, with another oil crisis sweeping the globe, Albertans will finally be going to the polls in October to vote on a motion that could begin the process of separation from the rest of the country.
The question being put to voters is: “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”.
The vote, like all ballot measures in Canada, is not mandatory, as it is in Australia. However, polling by the not-for-profit Angus Reid Institute suggests that up to two-thirds of the 5 million Albertans would vote against having a vote to leave Canada.
Albexit
The referendum is being likened to the ballot measure that saw the United Kingdom remove itself from the European Union.
That is not least of all because the premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, is the moderate leader of a right-wing United Conservative Party (UCP), who many believe has only called the vote to appease more hardline members of her party — much like the British Conservative prime minister, David Cameron.

Smith, in a televised address on Thursday, said that she had to respect the will of the 700,000 Albertans who signed two petitions calling for a vote on the issue.
“Kicking the can down the road only prolongs a very emotional and important debate, and muzzling the voices of hundreds of thousands of Albertans wanting to be heard is unjustifiable in a free and democratic society,” she said.
“It’s time to have a vote, understand the will of Albertans on this subject, and move on.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was head of the Bank of England at the time of the Brexit vote. He has warned that the Alberta referendum is a “dangerous bluff” that could well backfire.
“I saw first-hand what happened in the United Kingdom when the view was ‘Vote for this, it will be a soft exit and then we’ll negotiate, etc’,” he said.
“They’re still, 10 years later, trying to undo what people didn’t think they were voting for.”

Anthes, 39, said that it would be wrong to write the “separatists” off.
“I think it’s a little bit of a pipe dream,” he said. “But a few weekends ago, there must have been two to three hundred people walking up and down the main street with Alberta flags, trying to get you to sign up… it was a big turnout.
“Every weekend there’s a van sitting there with guys out the front that you can go and talk to, and they want you to sign up, and a lot of lot of my friends and colleagues, they’re all for it.”
As a Canadian-Australian dual national, Anthes would have a vote in the referendum, and while he said he will likely vote against leaving, it’s mainly because he thinks it simply won’t happen.

Still, the sense that the population aren’t being listened to is a familiar populist refrain that Anthes said is unlikely to be dispelled from the region even after a negative vote.
“I feel that the same kind of mindset of the more rural aspect of the Trump ideology is here,” he said of the region known as the ‘Texas of Canada’.
“It’s a very conservative place. It’s quite religious. Where I am, your churches are packed every weekend. I wouldn’t [say] it’s backward, but it kind of sometimes feels like that.”
Making life more complicated
Anthes’ belief that the concept has not been well thought out is shared by Trent Brookhouse, another Australian who grew up in Cairns, Queensland, and now lives Alberta’s biggest city, Calgary.
“If Alberta left Canada, it doesn’t mean it automatically keeps all the [Canadian] trade agreements. It doesn’t mean it’s going to be stronger. Canada is stronger together.”

Brookhouse works a fly-in, fly-out schedule in the mining industry in the province of Ontario. He’s concerned the potential departure could make life very complicated for him.
“I get taxed as if I live in Ontario but when I do my taxes at tax time, they have to recalculate it, because I live in Alberta,” he said. “If you add in the independence to all of that, what does that mean for me?”
Having become a Canadian citizen in March, he is also not sure whether an independent Alberta would honour his dual nationality.
“That could make me have to question where I live,” he said.
The 51st state?
Last year, Smith met with Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida. The United States president has repeatedly floated the idea of Canada becoming the country’s 51st state, and her visit prompted accusations that she was siding with the US as the neighbouring countries entered a trade war.
“What I asked the president was, do you want to buy more oil and gas from Canada? And he said yes,” Smith told reporters about her trip to the US.

When Carney took over from Justin Trudeau, one of his first moves was to ink a major energy deal with Smith to expand the West Coast oil pipeline that could eventually funnel 1.2 million barrels per day from Alberta to the Port of Vancouver for export to Asia.
Ex-environment minister Steven Guilbeault, who stepped down on Wednesday following the deal, accusing the country of climate “backsliding,” has said the pipeline emboldened the separatists.
“What we are doing right now is we are rewarding bad behaviour,” he said, rejecting the argument that the deal had to be made to dampen the movement.
Mitch Sylvestre, head of the leading independence group the Alberta Prosperity Project, has said that he doesn’t think his movement is seeking to join the US.
However, American broadcaster NBC News has reported that the group has been meeting with US State Department officials to discuss the logistics of Alberta joining the country, including adopting its currency and border controls.
“For those of us who are very much in support of Alberta becoming a sovereign country, it’s heartening to us at each of the three meetings that we’ve had with the US administration to be informed that the entire US administration is supportive of Alberta becoming a sovereign country,” Dennis Modry, a co-founder of the Alberta Prosperity Project, has said.
The comments were made after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the province was a “natural partner for the US” as “they have great resources.”
A vocal minority?
For Australian Sally Lockhart, who moved to Canada in 1997 and has lived for the past 13 years in Calgary, the entire separatist movement feels “suspicious.”
Lockhart, who grew up in country Victoria, believes most Albertans want the province to remain a part of Canada, and argues support for separation comes largely from those in regional areas who she says don’t appreciate how good they have it.
“Alberta is one of the wealthiest provinces in Canada, and these oil and gas guys, I don’t think they realise what they’re getting themselves into,” she says.
“I actually don’t think they would be well off at all, because I think the US would just bleed it dry, and they become another Midwest state that just happens to have a happens to have some oil.”
The recent survey from the Angus Reid Institute, which polled 800 Albertan adults, found 60 per cent of respondents backed the status quo while 35 per cent wanted to begin the process for a referendum on separation.
Support for remaining in Canada was strongest among urban voters, according to the poll, with Calgary and Edmonton — Alberta’s two largest cities — backing federalism at 58 per cent and 73 per cent, respectively.
Rural Alberta was evenly split, with 48 per cent supporting and 48 per cent opposing the proposal, according to the poll, which did not explore respondents’ reasons for wanting to stay in or leave Canada.

Lockhart also notes that negotiation for separation would have to be made with First Nations’ groups who, unlike in Australia, signed treaties with the British Crown over the use of their land.
“Alberta has been around for a lot shorter period of time than what these treaties have been in place for,” she says.
“There’s a lot of red tape to go through that’s going to take years and years and years, and this separation talk is creating instability because people don’t want to invest here if they don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Indeed, the lack of consultation with First Nations’ groups in the province was what initially blocked the citizens’ initiative petitions for a separatist vote.
While the two petitions gained well above the number of signatures needed to trigger introduction to the provincial legislative assembly, they were blocked by a judge who said they would override treaty agreements.
Smith, in announcing the vote, rejected the judge’s argument, but her plan does not appear to have placated the separatists.
The Angus Reid Polling found 51 per cent of respondents found the question confusing and 56 per cent believe Smith has handled the separation issue poorly — including nearly a third of her own voters.
Separatist leaders expressed outrage over the wording of the ballot question and the “referendum to have a referendum,” according to a report from Canadian media outlet Global News.
Still, as reported, the separatists will take the opportunity they have been granted and run with it.
For Australians like Brookhouse, they will be anticipating the vote with some trepidation.
“No one took Brexit seriously,” he says. “Right now people in Alberta — mainly people in Calgary — don’t take it seriously, but it’s happened before around the world.”

Trump’s intention to take center stage underscores his belief in his unique ability to captivate and engage audiences, even comparing his drawing power to that of Elvis at the height of his fame.

Poison front man, Bret Michaels, said late Thursday that he had jumped at the chance to honor the nation, only to pull out, fearing for the safety of his relatives, friends and bandmates.
He joins Morris Day, Young MC, the Commodores and Martina McBride, with five of the nine headline acts dropping out since the lineup was announced on Wednesday – and just a month before the music festival is due to kick off on the National Mall.
The artists say they were led to believe Freedom 250 was a nonpartisan commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, only to learn that it was tied to the Trump Administration.
Michaels said the event pitched to him by organizers had ‘evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of.’
The rocker, 63, said he had been sold on the idea that the concert was ‘a celebration of our country through music and a chance to honor our veterans,’ but the politics surrounding the event had put his family, friends and bandmates at risk.
‘Concerns have also been raised regarding the safety of my fans, band, crew, family and myself, including threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable,’ Michaels said in a statement.

Vanilla Ice has defended Trump’s Freedom 250 concert as the rapper confirmed he is still taking to the stage during the festivities next month.
The Ice Ice Baby hitmaker, 58, explained to TMZ on Friday that music should be bringing the country together and added the focus should be simply on celebrating the United States.

In a significant development, a federal judge in Florida has decided to revive President Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which seeks damages amounting to $10 billion. This decision comes after intervenors raised concerns that a settlement involving the creation of an “anti-weaponization” fund might have compromised the integrity of the case.
Previously, an agreement was reached between the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Trump to voluntarily withdraw the lawsuit. In exchange, a substantial fund of $1.776 billion was to be established, allowing individuals who believe they have been wronged by the government to apply for compensation. This arrangement allowed both parties to bypass U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams, who was originally overseeing the case.
However, on Friday, Judge Williams decided to reconsider the case. She took this step in response to concerns from non-party intervenors, who argued that despite there being no official settlement on record, public statements and documents implied that the case’s dismissal was based on a supposed settlement between the involved parties.
Judge Williams’ decision to reopen the case underscores the ongoing legal complexities and the broader implications of the settlement’s terms. The case will now return to the court for further examination, potentially impacting the future of similar fund-based settlements.
“The non-party movants explain that although there is no settlement of record in this matter, public documents and announcements indicate that the dismissal of this case was premised on a purported settlement between the Parties,” she wrote.
“In turn, movants submit that the settlement ‘is a product of collusion and is itself a fraud on the Court.’”
In reopening the case, Williams largely returns it to where the case was before the parties alerted the judge they would be dismissing it and starting the fund.
That move set off a firestorm, spawning pushback even from congressional Republicans who have sponsored legislation to ban the fund, asserting Congress gave no authority for such spending.
Democrats have also blasted the fund, saying it will be used to funnel money to Trump’s allies, including those who condone actions like the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, and otherwise back claims from those who were rightfully prosecuted.
In addition to the fund, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche later signed an addendum to “forever bar and preclude” the IRS from reviewing Trump’s prior tax returns. Previous reports have found Trump could owe as much as $100 million following audits of prior returns.
The filing came from 35 former federal judges who argued the original case violated the conditional requirement for parties to be truly adverse in court suits.
“The non-party movants advance grievous allegations that Plaintiffs voluntarily dismissed this litigation solely to avoid judicial scrutiny of a lawsuit that ‘was collusive from the start’ and was only filed to provide the imprimatur of legality for an unlawful settlement,” Williams wrote.
“They point to the fact that the settlement in question includes a ‘three-paragraph addendum … [that] purports to ‘forever bar and preclude’ the United States from pursuing claims that could have been [otherwise] asserted [against] Plaintiffs,’ and highlight the fact that Defendants did not ‘even try to defend against Plaintiffs’ claims’ despite their active opposition to nearly identical claims in other litigation.”
The order from Williams launches a new inquiry, directing both Trump and the DOJ to again file briefs to explain “charges of collusion and whether the Parties are truly adverse” as well as “whether the case should be reopened because the Court was the ‘victim of a fraud.’”
In response to the tragic mass shooting on May 18, where the San Diego mosque faced an unimaginable attack, the Islamic Center of San Diego is revamping its security measures to avert future incidents.
During this devastating event, two attackers opened fire, resulting in the loss of three lives, including that of a security guard. The gunmen were later found dead in their vehicle, having taken their own lives.
Amidst an ongoing investigation by law enforcement, the center has announced on its website that local police will maintain a presence at the site for the foreseeable future. Additionally, they are collaborating with security experts to explore enhanced protective strategies and chart a secure course forward.
“Ensuring the safety of our children, families, staff, and the broader community is our utmost priority,” the center emphasized. “We appreciate the community’s patience as we undertake this crucial work.”
The center is also partnering with Bright Horizon Academy, the private Islamic school housed within the mosque, to address safety issues concerning the students. Many students were present during the attack, but thanks to the bravery of two victims who diverted the shooters, the children remained unharmed.
The mosque is still open for all daily prayers, and its front office reopened this past week.
“Given the high volume of calls, emails, and community needs, we kindly ask everyone to be patient and to keep in-person interactions with staff brief and respectful,” it said.
Money is pouring in to help those affected by the shooting, and the mosque made clear it would keep those funds separate from the general funds for the Islamic Center. A town hall is in the works, the center said in its update.
“We are one community, and in moments like this, we must come together with patience, mercy, wisdom, and trust in Allah,” the center said.
The San Diego community is still reeling from the shooting after two teens targeted the mosque due to what appeared to be anti-Islamic motivations, police said.

A Canadian man has admitted to facilitating suicides by selling a legal yet potentially lethal chemical online, bringing an international case to a close without the need for a murder trial. Kenneth Law, aged 60, was at the center of this significant legal matter.
Law operated four companies that maintained websites for the purpose of marketing and selling sodium nitrite. Alongside this chemical, he also provided items such as masks, hoods, and regulators to customers who later used them to end their lives.
Sodium nitrite, commonly known as a food additive used in small amounts for curing meats, poses a deadly risk when consumed in large quantities.
This past Friday, Law entered a guilty plea at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, located in Newmarket, just north of Toronto. He admitted to aiding the suicides of 14 individuals from Ontario, ranging in age from 16 to 36. His sentencing is scheduled for September.

Prosecutor Peter Westgate told Justice Michelle Fuerst that prosecutors would ask that 14 first-degree murder charges Law was also facing be withdrawn after his sentencing.
Family members of victims, some wiping their eyes with tissues, were visibly upset as prosecutor Cheryl Nadler read out the circumstances of each victim’s death.
“Today has been heavy,” said Kim Prosser, mother of victim Ashtyn Prosser.
“I carry forward his legacy in my heart and my soul.”
Law also admitted that 79 people in Britain died as a result of consuming or using products he sold.
Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service said it had decided against seeking Law’s extradition to stand trial in the UK, concluding that doing so carried a risk of refusal on double-jeopardy grounds.
Packages sent globally
Law sent 1,209 packages of the salt and other goods to customers in 41 countries between January 2021 and April 2023, the court heard. The shipments included 330 sent to addresses in Britain, 431 to the United States and 157 within Canada.
The case’s statement of facts described victims who vomited, collapsed in their parents’ arms, were found unresponsive in bed by family members or friends, or who died alone in hotel rooms and vehicles after consuming or using products shipped by Law.
“Many, many, many, many,” Law told a reporter who was posing as a potential customer and asked how many people have been successful in killing themselves using his products, in a recorded phone call played in court.
Financial records showed more than C$296,000 ($298,500) in deposits to Law’s bank account from Shopify and PayPal accounts associated with his businesses between 2020 and 2023.
“I genuinely thought that I was helping people to alleviate their suffering while making a small, modest profit,” Law said in a personal letter found in his home.
The statement of facts said the parties in the case did not agree on what Law’s statements meant about his motivation.
Westgate told the court that prosecuting Law for murder was no longer viable after a 2024 Ontario Court of Appeal ruling in an unrelated case involving a nurse who injected herself, her mother and her young daughter with potentially lethal doses of insulin.
In that case, the appellate court “described the standard of causation that applies in a situation like we have here, where a victim performs the final acts leading to death,” Westgate said.
Prosecutors asked the Supreme Court of Canada to overturn that standard, but the majority did not rule on the issue, leaving the appellate decision as binding authority in Ontario, according to Westgate.
“This decision makes a murder prosecution in this case impossible,” Westgate said.
Law, a trained engineer who worked as a cook before his arrest, has been in custody since his arrest at his home west of Toronto in May 2023.
A conviction for counseling or aiding suicide carries a prison sentence of up to 14 years, according to Canada’s Criminal Code. First-degree murder in Canada carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment with no chance of parole for a minimum of 25 years.
