Mt. Zion’s Trump Aims for Redemption at State Finals After Last Year’s Setback

MT. ZION, Ill. (WCIA) — After a year of anticipation, Wyatt Trump is eager to seize his opportunity to compete at O’Brien Field once again.

Last season, Trump aimed to qualify in all four of his events at the Class 2A state sectionals, focusing particularly on his two hurdle races. Unfortunately, he only advanced in the 4×800-meter relay.

“The sectionals last year were a challenging experience for me,” Trump shared. “But it served as motivation, helping me understand the physical and mental demands required to succeed.”

This year, Trump triumphed by qualifying in all four events, including the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, securing his place at the prestigious Big Blue Track.

“As it’s my senior year, I’m really aiming to enjoy every moment,” Trump expressed. “I want to cherish this final meet with my longtime coach and the team that has supported me through this journey.”

Mt. Zion will compete in the Class 2A boys’ prelims on Friday, May 29 at EIU’s O’Brien Field.

China’s Shenzhou 23 Mission Begins: Astronaut Embarks on Yearlong Space Adventure

0

On Sunday night, China successfully launched the Shenzhou 23 spacecraft, sending three astronauts to the nation’s space station. Among them, one astronaut is slated to spend an entire year in space.

The launch took place at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, located in northwestern China. This mission is a significant stride forward as China gears up for its inaugural crewed lunar landing, planned for 2030.

The mission’s crew includes Zhu Yangzhu, who is serving as the commander, along with Zhang Zhiyuan and Lai Ka-ying. Lai is also known as Li Jiaying, her name rendered in Mandarin.

Lai Ka-ying, hailing from Hong Kong and holding a doctorate in computer forensics, marks a historic milestone as the first astronaut from the city to participate in a space mission.

According to state media, the team will undertake numerous scientific and application-oriented projects. Additionally, they are scheduled to carry out an in-orbit crew rotation with the Shenzhou 21 team, who have been stationed at the Tiangong space station for over 200 days.

One of the three astronauts on the Shenzhou 23 mission is scheduled to stay at the orbiting space station for a year in what would be among the world’s longest single stays in space.

The astronaut’s mission is to “explore human adaptability and performance limits” in long-duration spaceflight environments, state media reported.

As China steps up its space program, its astronauts have carried out multiple missions to the Tiangong space station, developed after China was effectively excluded from the International Space Station on US concerns over national security.

The US is seen as China’s top space rival, with NASA aiming to land astronauts on the lunar surface in 2028.

China’s space station Tiangong, which translates to “Heavenly Palace,” first hosted the country’s crew in 2021.

Last year, an emergency mission in the Shenzhou program, which means “Divine Vessel,” returned a team of astronauts stranded on the space station due to a damaged spacecraft.

Trump Fires Back at Iran Deal Critics: ‘Ignore the Naysayers Who Don’t Understand

0

President Trump’s ongoing negotiations over a new Iran deal have sparked criticism, with detractors accusing him of showing leniency toward Iran’s leadership and not imposing stringent enough penalties on the regime known for its support of terrorism.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has drawn the president’s ire by suggesting the new agreement mirrors the controversial 2015 deal under President Barack Obama, which involved the delivery of large sums of cash to Iran without effectively curbing its nuclear ambitions. Prominent Republican figures, including Senators Ted Cruz of Texas, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, and Roger Wicker of Missouri, have publicly stated that any agreement failing to significantly limit Iran’s nuclear program would be unacceptable.

Without naming specific critics, Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday to dismiss the backlash, asserting that the opposition, which spans across the political spectrum, lacks an understanding of the agreement’s content.

Although he didn’t name names, Trump posted to Truth Social on Sunday afternoon to clap back at the naysayers, a group that includes just about every Democrat, and said they don’t even know what’s in the deal.

He confidently stated that the new deal will differ significantly from its predecessor, urging critics to reserve judgment until the full details are disclosed, emphasizing that they currently lack insight into its specifics.

According to administration officials, the agreement is nearly finalized, with about 95% of the terms settled. However, a few details remain unresolved due to the complexities involved in negotiating with Iran. Communication challenges persist, as electronic exchanges could be intercepted by Israeli or U.S. intelligence, whereas in-person meetings pose their own risks, reminiscent of the fate that befell former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The new deal will look nothing like the old one, he claimed, and the critics can wait until they see the details before piling on. They don’t even know what’s in it, he charged:

Our deal is the exact opposite, but nobody has seen it, or knows what it is. It isn’t even fully negotiated yet. So don’t listen to the losers, who are critical about something they know nothing about. Unlike those before me who should have solved this problem many years ago, I don’t make bad deals! President DJT

Administration officials have said the deal is 95 percent negotiated, but there are a few details left to work out, and negotiating with Iran takes a long time, even over the smallest points, due to their difficulty communicating. If they use electronic communication devices, they run the risk of being tracked by Israel or U.S. intelligence agencies. If they meet up in person, they face the danger that they could end up like former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (ie, dead).

The stakes are huge: this deal and its bullet points could define Trump’s second term in office and will affect, one way or the other, his final two and a half or so years as commander-in-chief. That being said, until we know exactly what’s being proposed, critics are acting without a full understanding and would be better off waiting until details are released.

We should know relatively soon, a Trump official told Fox News on Sunday:

“We are not going to roll over. We are not there yet on a deal. We are not going to sign a deal today or tomorrow,” the official said before adding that President Donald Trump’s “instinct is to give them 5, 6, 7 days” to get an agreement over the line.

Editor’s Note: For decades, former presidents have been all talk and no action. Now, Donald Trump is eliminating the threat from Iran once and for all.

Man on Pre-Trial Release Arrested for Bold Bicycle Theft in Front of On-Duty Officer

Staff Report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a surprising turn of events, 37-year-old Shivaun Moss Solomon Blake found himself in handcuffs after allegedly absconding with a bicycle right under the nose of law enforcement.

The incident unfolded on the afternoon of May 21 at approximately 4:22 p.m. when a Gainesville Police Department officer witnessed the theft at a shopping plaza located at 1355 NW 23rd Avenue. The bike’s owner had left it momentarily unattended. Swiftly acting on the situation, the officer pursued Blake and managed to catch up with him after he had pedaled roughly 300 yards away from the scene.

In what could be described as a brazen but ill-conceived plan, Blake reportedly confessed to the officer that he assumed the police were preoccupied with more pressing matters. His intention, he claimed, was to sell the bicycle for a mere $10, an amount shockingly disproportionate to its estimated value of $1,200.

The officer noted that the bicycle was valued at about $1,200.

Blake has been charged with felony petit theft with two or more previous theft convictions. He has one felony conviction (non-violent) and six misdemeanor convictions (non-violent); he is on pre-trial release for a February incident in which he allegedly stole about $400 in merchandise from a Walgreens store and was released on his own recognizance. He is also facing a sworn complaint for two shoplifting incidents in February in which he allegedly took 31 items from a 7-11 and then returned and took some beer and wine; he has not been booked on those charges. Judge Bo Bayer set bail at $5,000 on the bike theft charge.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Revitalize Your Core: 5 Bed Exercises to Firm Apron Belly for Seniors Over 60

Dealing with an apron belly post-60 can be challenging, especially as it tends to hang low across the abdomen, altering the feel of your midsection whether you’re in motion or at rest. This change becomes more apparent with age as muscle mass diminishes, daily activity decreases, and overall body fat rises. Hormonal changes and inconsistent strength training over the years also contribute to this condition. However, the key objectives remain unchanged: increase lean muscle mass, incorporate more movement into your routine, and cultivate habits that encourage gradual fat loss.

Unfortunately, targeting specific areas for fat reduction doesn’t work as many hope it would. You can’t simply choose to eliminate fat from the lower belly through targeted exercises. The principle of burning more calories than you consume still governs fat loss. Meanwhile, strength training and core exercises are essential for enhancing both the appearance and function of your body as its composition evolves. The aim is to fortify the muscles beneath, bolster core control, and remain consistent until visible results emerge.

In my experience with clients, those who succeed often abandon intense ab routines in favor of more manageable core exercises that can be performed consistently. Bed exercises offer a practical solution by reducing the intimidation factor. These exercises can be done in the morning before you rise or in the evening as you prepare to sleep. The stability of the bed allows you to concentrate on core engagement, pelvic stability, and controlled movements, without the discomfort of a hard floor surface.

Spot reduction doesn’t really work the way people want it to. You can’t pick the lower belly and force fat to leave that exact area with a few exercises. Calories in versus calories out still drives fat loss, while strength work and core training help improve how your body looks and functions as body composition changes. The goal is to strengthen the muscles underneath, improve control through your midsection, and stay consistent long enough for the visual changes to follow.

I’ve seen this with clients many times. The people who make the most progress usually stop chasing brutal ab workouts and start focusing on cleaner core work they can repeat. Bed exercises help because they lower the barrier to entry. You can do them in the morning before your feet hit the floor or at night before you wind down. They also provide a stable surface, making it easier to focus on bracing, pelvic control, and slow reps rather than fighting the floor.

The five exercises below target your lower abs, deep core, hips, and full midsection control. You’ll use dead bugs, heel taps, reverse crunches, glute bridges, and planks to build a stronger base from the inside out. Keep each rep controlled, avoid rushing, and make your core do the work.

Dead Bugs

Dead bugs train your lower abs and deep core while your arms and legs move away from your body. Your midsection has to brace to keep your lower back from arching, which is a strong choice for firming the area around an apron belly. Compared with most gym workouts that rush through big movements, dead bugs teach the control that many people need first. Better core control carries over into walking, standing, lifting, and keeping your lower back from doing extra work.

Muscles Trained: Lower abs, deep core, hip flexors, shoulders

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your arms reaching toward the ceiling.
  2. Lift your knees over your hips and bend them to 90 degrees.
  3. Press your lower back gently into the bed.
  4. Extend your right arm and left leg away from your body.
  5. Return to the starting position with control.
  6. Repeat on the opposite side.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per side. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Same-side dead bugs, paused dead bugs, heel-tap dead bugs

Form Tip: Keep your lower back pressed into the bed during every rep.

Heel Taps

Heel taps train your lower abs by asking your core to control one leg at a time. Each tap forces your midsection to stay braced so your pelvis doesn’t tip and your lower back doesn’t lift. This helps firm the lower belly because the work stays focused on control rather than momentum. The movement also builds a stronger connection between your core and hips, which helps your midsection support you better during everyday movement.

Muscles Trained: Lower abs, deep core, hip flexors

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent over your hips.
  2. Press your lower back gently into the bed.
  3. Brace your core before moving your legs.
  4. Lower one heel toward the bed with control.
  5. Tap your heel lightly without relaxing your core.
  6. Bring your leg back up and switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps per side. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Alternating heel taps, slower heel taps, extended-leg heel taps

Form Tip: Lower your heel only as far as your core can control.

Reverse Crunches

Reverse crunches train your lower abs by making your pelvis curl instead of relying on your neck, shoulders, or hip flexors to do the work. As your knees move toward your chest, your lower belly has to help lift and control the movement. This makes reverse crunches useful for apron belly work because the exercise targets the control that many people lose through the lower abdomen. Keep the range small and smooth so your abs guide the rep, not your legs swinging around.

Muscles Trained: Lower abs, deep core, hip flexors

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet lifted.
  2. Place your arms at your sides for support.
  3. Brace your core and keep your movement small.
  4. Curl your hips slightly off the bed.
  5. Bring your knees toward your chest without swinging.
  6. Lower your hips back down with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Bent-knee reverse crunches, paused reverse crunches, slow tempo reverse crunches

Form Tip: Think about curling your pelvis instead of throwing your legs upward.

Glute Bridges

Glute bridges train your glutes and hamstrings while your core keeps your ribs and pelvis in a strong position. Stronger glutes matter for an apron belly because better hip strength helps your posture, pelvic position, and overall midsection control. Your lower abs have to stay engaged as your hips lift, especially if you avoid arching through your lower back. This move also gives you more lower-body muscle work than most ab-only routines, which supports better body composition after 60.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, hamstrings, core

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the bed.
  2. Place your arms at your sides.
  3. Brace your core and press through your heels.
  4. Lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to knees.
  5. Squeeze your glutes at the top.
  6. Lower your hips with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 12 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Paused glute bridges, mini-band glute bridges, single-leg glute bridges

Form Tip: Finish with your glutes and avoid arching your lower back.

Forearm Plank

Forearm planks train your entire core while your lower belly works to keep your hips from sagging. Your abs, obliques, glutes, and shoulders all stay active, which gives the movement more total-body value than small crunch variations. For apron belly work, planks help build the bracing strength needed to support your midsection during standing, walking, lifting, and daily movement. Start with shorter holds and build strength in the position before adding more time.

Muscles Trained: Core, lower abs, obliques, shoulders, glutes

How to Do It:

  1. Place your forearms on the bed with your elbows under your shoulders.
  2. Step your feet back into a plank position.
  3. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes.
  4. Keep your body in a straight line from head to heels.
  5. Hold the position while breathing steadily.
  6. Lower your knees when your form starts to slip.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 20 to 30 seconds. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Knee plank, longer holds, plank with alternating leg lifts

Form Tip: Keep your ribs down and your hips level.

How to Make Bed Core Work Count After 60

Bed exercises work best when you treat them like focused strength work, not throwaway movement. The softer surface can make control more challenging, so slow reps and strong positions matter. Your goal is to keep the work in your lower abs and deep core, rather than letting your hip flexors or lower back take over. Pair these movements with walking, full-body strength training, and nutrition that supports fat loss, and you’ll have a much better setup for firming the lower belly.

  • Set your pelvis before each rep: gently press your lower back into the bed during dead bugs, heel taps, and reverse crunches. This helps your lower abs stay involved and keeps your lower back from taking over.
  • Move slower than feels natural: Slow reps force your core to control the movement. If your legs swing or your hips bounce, momentum has taken over.
  • Use a range you can control: Smaller, cleaner reps work better than big reps with poor position. Stop each movement before your back arches or your ribs flare.
  • Add full-body strength during the week: Core work helps build control, but muscles across your legs, back, and hips support better body composition. Squats, rows, presses, and hinges still belong in the plan.
  • Walk daily when possible: Walking helps increase calorie burn without beating up your joints. That matters because apron belly changes come from overall fat loss, not one perfect ab move.

Vanessa Trump Makes First Public Appearance Following Cancer Announcement

0

Vanessa Trump was recently seen in Miami with her daughter, Kai, marking her first appearance since revealing her breast cancer diagnosis.

The 48-year-old mother of five opted for a relaxed look, wearing a blue button-down shirt, jeans, and sandals while strolling through a shopping center in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday with her 19-year-old daughter.

Kai mirrored her mother’s casual style, sporting flared blue jeans, a white camisole, a tan sweater, and white sneakers.

The pair appeared to be in good spirits, engaging in conversation with their hands tucked into their pockets, their pink-painted nails visible, before linking arms in photos captured by the Daily Mail.

This public appearance on Sunday was Vanessa’s first since she shared the news of her breast cancer diagnosis the previous week.

Vanessa – the ex-wife of President Trump’s eldest son, Don Jr. – made the admission in an Instagram post on Wednesday, saying she had undergone a ‘procedure’ earlier in the week.

‘I want to share a personal health update. I’ve recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. While this isn’t news anyone expects, I’m working closely with my medical team on a treatment plan,’ she said.

Vanessa added that she was grateful to her doctors for performing the procedure.

‘I am staying focused and hopeful while surrounded by the love and support of my family, my kids and those closest to me. Thank you for your kindness and support, it truly means more than I can express.’

She also asked for privacy while she focused on recovering.

Vanessa was later noticeably absent as Kai, her eldest daughter with Don Jr, celebrated her graduation from high school later that day.

The teenager had posted an image to her own Instagram Stories, showing her alongside her mother while wearing her blue cap and gown.

‘The strongest person I know,’ she wrote on the image.

She also shared a video that showed her getting ready for her big day, as her mother remarked: ‘I can’t believe she’s graduating today.’

Kai was seen in photos exclusively obtained by the Daily Mail meeting her grandmother, Bonnie Haydon, and aunt, Veronika Haydon, at celebrity hotspot The Mark in New York City for dinner.

Vanessa’s outing with her daughter came just one day after her ex Don Jr married Bettina Anderson in an intimate wedding.

The loved-up couple headed to the glamorous Bahamas after their Palm Beach ceremony for a sun-soaked event limited to their closest friends and family members, including Tiffany and Ivanka Trump.

Don Jr’s president father was not in attendance at the Bahamas ceremony, but the couple is hoping to hold a third wedding celebration at the White House in the future, where Donald Trump and Melania Trump can attend, sources told People.

The couple’s marriage certificate, obtained by the Daily Mail, shows that the president’s eldest son and the glamorous socialite officially became husband and wife in a secret ceremony held at the West Palm Beach home of Anderson’s sister, Kristina McPherson, on Thursday.

On Saturday, the new bride took to her Instagram Stories to share a look at their wedding bands along with a gushing message to Don Jr.

She posted a black-and-white shot of their hands, with their understated silver rings on full display.

‘Forever yours, forever mine,’ she wrote with a white heart.

She followed it up with a message that said: ‘The whole point is to marry your best friend.’

Just a year after Don Jr’s public split from newly minted Greek ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle, he began dating Anderson before popping the question with a giant eight-carat diamond ring this past holiday season.

The engagement news was revealed by his father, President Trump, during a Christmas White House reception, as the 47-year-old eldest son revealed he was unsure whether his new bride-to-be would actually accept his proposal as he got down on one knee.

But she did – and it seems like Bettina already has approval from her new family.

In April, Ivanka gushed over Bettina, posting intimate pictures of her bridal shower.

In a handful of sweet photos posted to Instagram by Ivanka, Bettina smiled alongside her new family, which included sisters-in-law Ivanka, Tiffany, and Lara Trump, as well as her new niece, Ivanka and Jared Kushner’s daughter, Arabella, 14.

The ladies all posed together, smiling side by side, and laughing in another adorable snap.

The Trump ladies looked ready for spring as they stood alongside their new sister-in-law in an array of neutral–colored floral sundresses.

‘Celebrated love, family, and new beginnings at Bettina’s bridal shower this weekend,’ Ivanka wrote in the caption of the photos.

‘So grateful to share in this joyous moment with Arabella, Lara, and Tiffany (and of course Don Jr!),’ the message read.

In response, Bettina left a comment, writing: ‘How blessed am I. So grateful for you girls,’ along with a praying-hands emoji.

Meanwhile, Vanessa is now dating golf legend Tiger Woods, who recently completed an intensive rehabilitation program in Zurich.

He had been charged with driving under the influence following a car crash near his home in Jupiter, Florida on March 27.

Police reportedly found prescription opioid pills in his possession at the time of the arrest, which he had been using to manage chronic injury pain. Woods has pleaded not guilty to DUI.

The golfer has since left rehab early to attend Kai’s graduation ceremony.

And despite his arrest and rehab trip, a source has told People that she remains head over heels for Tiger.

‘Vanessa and Tiger are in love, still serious, and happy to see each other,’ the insider is quoted as saying.

‘[She] is eager to help him continue with his progress and move beyond any more public scandals — which they both dislike intensely.’

The source added that Woods took his trip ‘seriously’ and is ‘all about continuing his recovery and putting this chapter behind him.’

‘He is in good spirits and also can’t wait to put the legal issues to rest,’ they said.

Liz Confronts Alicia on Controversial “Homeless” Remark, While Kelsey Alleges Rosie of Involvement with Married Men

The drama on The Real Housewives of Rhode Island is heating up yet again as new tensions rise. While Rosie and Kelsey’s feud has barely cooled, another clash emerges, this time between Alicia and Liz. The show’s stars are known for their explosive confrontations, where strong emotions often lead to tears and fractured friendships.

RHORI Recap: Liz Calls Out Alicia Over Her “Homeless” Comment, Kelsey Accuses Rosie of Affairs With Married Men as Their Feud Intensifies, and Rulla Slams Jo-Ellen as a “Douche”

Having just expelled Kelsey from her home, Rosie is riding high, but Kelsey is seething. In a phone call to Liz, Kelsey insists she’s no one’s “slam pig,” claiming she’s only had six partners in her life. She accuses Rosie of being involved with two married men, one of whom allegedly paid Rosie to keep quiet about their affair. Kelsey believes this is how Rosie can afford luxuries like her house. Frustrated, Kelsey considers charging Rosie via Venmo for gas money, lamenting Rosie’s dishonesty.

Meanwhile, Ashley and her husband Jared are busy preparing for a trivia night at Audrey’s, aiming to generate buzz and support for their venture. Ashley wants to make Jared happy, but after a conversation with Rosie, she realizes it’s impossible to please everyone. Rosie shares her fallout with Kelsey and declares she won’t attend the event if Kelsey is there. Rosie feels Kelsey is insincere and wants no part in any gathering that includes her.

Elsewhere, Alicia and Rulla enjoy a day at the beach, discussing their children, when an acquaintance approaches. The woman, once close to Jo-Ellen, has distanced herself due to Jo-Ellen’s penchant for drama. This supports Rulla’s desire to avoid Jo-Ellen at trivia night, as she wishes to protect herself from any potential chaos Jo-Ellen might bring.

Alicia meets Rulla at the beach and they chat about their kids until a woman comes over and interrupts. She is an old friend of Jo-Ellen‘s, but no longer talks to her because Jo-Ellen is too much of a pot-stirrer. This proves Rulla’s point exactly. Rulla would rather not be at trivia night with Jo-Ellen and explains that she would prefer to distance herself from Jo-Ellen for her own protection.

Rulla is having a hard time wrapping her mind around the fact that her husband was unfaithful to her, but Alicia still cannot deliver the brutal news about THE video. Alicia realizes that Rulla is financially stable without her husband, but she worries because she does not feel empowered.  According to Rulla, Alicia needs to figure out how to protect herself and stop relying on Billy. It’s time for Alicia to claim her stake in Pizza Mama and get her financial ducks in a row.

Contrary to what Rosie said, Kelsey claims she doesn’t suck d*ck for gifts.  Kelsey went from one boyfriend to another boyfriend, and she is happy to have Bill be her plus one for a triple date with Liz, Jo-Ellen, and their men. They hear Kelsey’s side of the story with Rosie and we learn that Rosie called Jo-Ellen to share her account of Kelsey, the square footage police.  Kelsey laughs that Rosie said her career is “d*ck sucking” and that she is a slam-pig.

Because of this fight, Rosie will not go to trivia night if Kelsey goes, but Kelsey will go to support Ashley and Jared.  Kelsey is not the lying b*tch at the end of the day.

Kelsey explains that her ex asks for nothing in return, but still fronts a lot of her lifestyle. Bill, the new boyfriend, feels like it’s not the ex’s job to take care of Kelsey.  Once Kelsey gets serious with Bill, her ex will not pay for it.  But Kelsey states, “I don’t want to be homeless like Alicia.”

Liz explains that Alicia has always had a very good life and she lived with her grandma…not out on the streets.  Liz goes on to say she has a soft spot for Alicia and was there for her when she was a child…BUT she was never homeless. Seems like Alicia exaggerated a little bit and may be hanging out with Rosie a little too much…

Kelsey and Rosie are both coming to trivia night, and so Ashley is a nervous wreck, considering this is her place of business AND she does not like conflict. Ashley’s grand plan is to keep the ladies separated.  She puts Alicia, Kelsey, and Jo-Ellen at one table to try and keep things safe. Rosie explains to Liz that she felt disrespected at her own house and mocked, but is it that she just can’t take a joke?

Kelsey arrives late, donning a Miss Slam Pig Sash.  Dead.  Kelsey wears it with pride and Ashley does not know what to do with this mess. Alicia realizes that Rosie has been picked on a lot lately and is tired of it happening. The whole gang comes over to Rosie’s table, Kelsey included.

Alicia worries about defending Rosie, as Rosie claims that Kelsey attacked her. Ashley does what she can to stop the bickering as Rosie threatens Kelsey to “buckle up” because she is not letting things go anymore. Rosie does not feel like Kelsey ever listens to her and calls her a loser. The girls hide under the table as Rosie and Kelsey continue to bicker. The fight escalates and Rosie storms off, claiming the clique needs to stop cliquing.

Alicia has decided to take baby steps with Rulla’s advice, so she makes a poster with her new business ideas for Pizza Mama and utilizes their daughter to try and promote her plans. Alicia just wants to be compensated for helping Billy. She is tired of relying on a man, but Billy explains he has an estate plan where it would all go to Alicia. Alicia is having a hard time trusting Billy, considering her dad abandoned her and so, she wants to have some ownership of future Pizza Mammas. Billy realizes that she should be compensated for all of her hard work and Alicia is thrilled to write up a contract agreeing to this.

Rosie apologizes to Ashley for what happened at trivia night, considering they made quite the scene. Rosie admits to seeing red and does not want to be anywhere near Kelsey. Rosie is planning a trip to Boston and wants everyone to come watch her husband, Rich, perform as Frank Sinatra…well everyone, except Kelsey.

Rosie explains that she met Rich when he was the on-air producer for a radio station and Rosie got to be in his music video. All the girls, minus Rulla (who never got back to Rosie) and Kelsey (who is no longer invited) will be attending Rich’s show. Rosie is certainly not about to let Kelsey come to her husband’s place of work and ruin things.

Jo-Ellen, Liz, and Alicia carpool to Rich’s concert.  They chat about Kelsey not attending the event and Liz realizes how stubborn Rosie and Kelsey are. Alicia shares that she told her mom that she talked to the ladies about her dad. Liz switches spots with Jo-Ellen because she wants to address Alicia’s “homeless” conversation. Losing a family home does not equate to being homeless in Liz’s eyes.  Alicia is not talking about Liz’s family and her life and so, right now, according to Alicia, Liz is a “snake.” Even Jo-Ellen’s husband said Alicia was never homeless. Liz realizes that she cannot take away the way Alicia feels, but Alicia thinks that Liz was too busy trying to “dissect” how she felt and what she said. Alicia feels like Liz showed her “real colors.”

Alicia does not take Liz’s apology seriously and is beyond annoyed with Liz. When Alicia’s dad left, she was left with nothing.  He ripped her childhood from her and Liz claims that she did not mean to invalidate Alicia’s feelings. Tragic Gas Explosion in China Coal Mine Claims 82 Lives: Urgent Safety Reforms Needed

0

A devastating gas explosion at a coal mine in China has claimed the lives of at least 82 individuals and left more than 120 hospitalized, as reported by the Associated Press (AP). Authorities are still searching for two missing people.

This tragic incident occurred at the Liushenyu coal mine, situated in Qinyuan County within China’s northern Shanxi province, marking it as the most lethal mining disaster the nation has faced in recent years.

Officials investigating the explosion have discovered “serious violations” committed by the mine’s operator, Shanxi Tongzhou Coal & Coke Group, and have launched a thorough inquiry into the event.

As a result of the explosion, China has initiated stricter safety inspections across its coal industry. This has raised concerns about coal supply, particularly for coking coal, leading to a surge in prices on Monday, according to Reuters.

According to the AP, the explosion triggered a chaotic scene where thick smoke engulfed the mine and suffocated many victims underground.

One miner lost consciousness, while many others suffered from toxic gas exposure, the outlet added, citing state broadcaster CCTV.

The explosion has reportedly intensified scrutiny from Chinese officials, who said investigators found multiple violations at the site, though details remain unclear.

In 2024, China’s National Mine Safety Administration had previously classified the mine as disaster-prone due to its “high gas content,” the AP reported.

State media also reported that blueprints provided by the mine did not match the site’s actual layout, complicating rescue operations, the outlet added.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a full-scale effort to rescue those still missing and ordered a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable, the AP said, citing official Xinhua News Agency.

The state-run outlet later reported that company officials connected to the disaster had been “placed under control,” according to the AP.

China has suffered a string of deadly mining disasters in recent decades even as officials have pledged to strengthen oversight of the sector.

In 2023, at least 53 people were killed in Inner Mongolia following reports of a collapse at an open-pit mine.

In 2009, a reported explosion at a coal mine in Heilongjiang province left 108 people dead.

Bethany Survives Laos Methanol Poisoning, Tragically Losing Friend

Brush with Death: Unraveling Stories of Near Misses

From narrowly evading a great white shark attack to surviving for days in the wilderness without sustenance, some people have faced unimaginable challenges. Others have battled deadly illnesses only to be left with long-lasting health issues or survived methanol poisoning at the cost of their sight. But when does a narrow escape become less of a blessing? Tune into this riveting episode of “Insight,” titled “Lucky Escapes,” airing Tuesday, May 26, at 8:30 PM on SBS or stream it on SBS On Demand.

For Bethany Clarke, a 28-year-old traveler, a vacation in Southeast Asia with her best friend Simone White in November 2024 took an unexpected turn for the worse.

The pair had been enjoying a lively night at Nana Backpackers Hostel in Vang Vieng, Laos, taking advantage of complimentary alcoholic drinks. But as the evening drew to a close, both British women began to feel ill.

“We woke up feeling completely disoriented and dizzy,” Bethany recounted to Insight. “There was confusion, a loss of appetite…”

While Bethany was recovering well, Simone’s condition worsened. Simone was transferred to another hospital, where she fell into a coma and needed emergency brain surgery.

Bethany says the operation worked, but Simone also had bleeding on the other side of her brain.

“They said to us, ‘Look, no matter what we do, even if we did another surgery, she would remain in a coma’.”

“We had to wait for her to die naturally but, of course, she didn’t because she was so young and healthy. Simone’s mum, Sue, had to turn off her life support.”

Coming to terms

Simone, along with Australian teenagers Bianca Jones and Holly Bowles, was one of six people who died in Laos in November 2024 from methanol poisoning.

Bethany said she struggled to process how differently her, and Simone’s bodies reacted to the poisoning.

“It didn’t really make sense, and it still doesn’t make sense,” Bethany said.

“We were told it could have been a metabolism difference… We drank exactly the same amount.”

The now Brisbane-based podiatrist said she did not feel lucky to have survived in the immediate aftermath of her childhood friend’s death.

“I remember saying to my mum, ‘I think I need to be admitted into some kind of mental hospital’ … I didn’t know how I was going to manage day to day.

“Thinking about anything else just seemed to be impossible.”

‘Really difficult to come to terms with’

Like Bethany and Simone, British backpacker Kipp Whysall, 23, drank the hostel’s free shots during happy hour and was sick the next day.

“I’d thrown up in the morning after, but it just felt like quite a bad hangover, and then it kind of got progressively worse throughout the day,” he told Insight.

Calum Macdonald, Kipp’s friend who he was travelling, felt “relatively normal” aside from some incoordination, but he started to lose his vision that next day as they travelled by bus to Hanoi.

Calum was admitted to hospital in Hanoi, and the medical staff first believed his loss of sight was due to an autoimmune condition called optic neuritis. But after various tests and treatments, doctors were unable to recover his sight.

During Calum’s hospital stay, Kipp heard the news about the tourists who had died from methanol poisoning. He decided to keep this information from him.

“It was really scary… it was really difficult to come to terms with initially that [methanol poisoning] might have been what had happened,” Kipp said.

“Because looking it up — methanol poisoning — the chances of recovery [were] much, much lower than the autoimmune response that we initially thought it was.”

Feeling survivor’s guilt

Kipp said it was difficult to process what happened, and he blamed himself for Calum’s misfortune.

“I felt a little bit partially responsible or guilty in that he never would have come out to Southeast Asia if I hadn’t invited him and badgered him into coming out,” he said.

“So, it was a kind of survivor’s guilt.”

Calum survived but remains blind and has had to learn navigating using a cane.

But Kipp says that in the end, he feels lucky to have survived and not to have been severely poisoned, knowing that wasn’t the case for all that night.

“It was definitely a very close call … it could have been a lot worse for me and for Calum.”

Life after a traumatic event

Experts say it’s normal for people to experience survivor’s guilt following a potentially traumatic event where they feel they had a better outcome than others or that they didn’t deserve to survive.

David Berle is an associate professor of psychology at the Australian National University School of Medicine. He said social and cultural expectations and beliefs about fairness and justice contribute to survivor’s guilt.

“The person might feel that ‘if I’m not feeling guilty about this, then I’m not remembering or commemorating the dead, that if I were to stop ruminating about this, maybe I’m letting myself off the hook’, so to speak,” Berle told Insight.

Where even though the person may know that they were not in any way responsible … it takes a while to process that and for the emotions to catch up with the intellectualising in the head.

David Berle

He explained why it can take a long time to be able to move forward after a traumatic event.

“People can sometimes feel trapped in this process where they feel that they … should feel guilty and that if they’re not, that’s a problem …” Berle said.

Berle said a lot of traumatic experiences were “purely random” and there can sometimes be a “head-to-heart lag” following trauma.

“Where even though the person may know that they were not in any way responsible … it takes a while to process that and for the emotions to catch up with the intellectualising in the head.”

But Berle said some people experience post-traumatic growth and find benefits in the aftermath of trauma.

“They might find that over time they feel that they’re now better able to relate to others or … an increased feeling of personal strength, or maybe their spiritual or faith beliefs have changed …”

Berle said that although many people might report appreciating life more following trauma, it does not negate the stressful aspects of the traumatic experience; research suggests people can experience some degree of post-traumatic growth alongside continued symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and difficulties at the same time.

“The last thing that a person who’s struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder needs is their supports … implying that there’s something good that may have come from it when maybe they don’t feel that that’s the case.”

‘Just like that, he was gone’

Like Kipp, Steve Tickner, 70, has experienced survivor’s guilt.

The photojournalist came close to death when photographing the 2010 Thailand Red Shirt protests in Bangkok, which were a series of mass anti-government demonstrations led by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (also known as the Red Shirts). Clashes between the military and protesters led to 90 people being killed and more than 2,000 injured.

Steve was changing his camera lens on the street when a 27-year-old man, law student Attachi Chumchan, ran past.

“And I looked up and there was a young man was running directly towards me from the direction of the shooting,” Steve told Insight.

“… When I say he was running, he was running for his life.”

A soldier then shot the man in the back. Steve and a monk had tried to get medical help, but the man died quickly.

Having covered war-torn conflicts on the ground for much of his five-decade-long career, Steve had been close to death before.

More than a year later, when the Thai police requested that Steve return and give evidence for the investigation into Attachi’s death — and was shown the victim’s autopsy report — he found out what really happened.

“I had to get up and walk outside into the sunlight … I went back inside and I said … ‘why are you showing me this?’” Steve said.

Steve says the police believed the soldier who fired the shot wasn’t shooting at someone running down the road; he was shooting at a stationary target who was thought to be loading a weapon.

It was then that Steve realised the bullet was probably meant for him — the soldier allegedly mistook Steve’s camera for a gun.

“I feel so sorry for his family … He was probably about to have a spectacular career in law — and yet, just like that, he was gone … ” Steve said.

“I don’t feel like it’s a lucky escape, I just think it’s bad all around.”

‘Not really an experience that I’d call lucky’

For Chloe Mombeshora, who was hospitalised and diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (a rare life-threatening dermatological condition caused by an adverse reaction to medication), being told she was ‘lucky to have survived’ by medical staff was enraging.

In 2024, the Sydney teenager was intubated in ICU and placed on life support for two weeks with blisters that turned into burns and covered 40 per cent of her body. The condition also made her temporarily blind and unable to walk and talk.

“It was a matter of learning how to drink real water — not just thickened water — or walking again,” Chloe said.

“And I was still blind for the first few months — so just trying to get back to normal life while not being able to see.”

After being discharged and struggling to come to terms with a slow recovery and her skin being a constant visual reminder of what she had been through, Chloe was distressed going into her final dermatology appointment.

Chloe said the dermatologist told her she was lucky to have survived as most people who were in her position didn’t.

“It’s not really an experience that I’d call lucky. Relearning how to do everything from scratch while everything is still physically painful to do isn’t lucky,” Chloe said.

“The outcome was I’ve restored most of my vision and I don’t have as many health complications, but like the first six months to a year was extremely difficult.”

Feeling lucky

For Bethany, her perspective on being lucky has changed as she continues to heal.

“With a lot of therapy, that’s improved a lot,” she said.

“I would say, over a year on, that I am lucky.”

In honour of her late friend, Bethany recently established the Simone White Methanol Awareness Campaign to alert the public to the dangers of poisoning and how to stay safe when drinking abroad.

“I think [Simone] would be pleased that things are moving…

“Moving slowly, but things seem to be changing …”

Bystander Critically Injured in Shooting Near White House Security Area

(AP) – A bystander, caught in the crossfire during a shooting incident outside the White House, remains in serious but stable condition as of Sunday. The unfortunate event unfolded when a man opened fire at a checkpoint, prompting U.S. Secret Service officers to retaliate, ultimately leading to the suspect’s death.

The Secret Service confirmed that the bystander, whose identity has not been disclosed, sustained a gunshot wound. Thankfully, the injury is not considered life-threatening, though details remain sparse regarding how exactly the bystander was hit.

The shooting, which occurred early Saturday evening, has been shrouded in limited information from authorities. The District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department identified the suspect as 21-year-old Nasire Best from Dundalk, Maryland. According to reports, Best initiated the gunfire towards the security checkpoint, compelling the Secret Service to respond. He was later declared dead at a hospital.

At the time of this security breach, President Donald Trump was present within the White House. The incident marks the third shooting near the president in recent weeks. Just last month, a man armed with guns and knives disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, and earlier this month, Secret Service officers were forced to engage with a shooter near the Washington Monument.

It was the third shooting near the president in the past month, after a man stormed the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in April armed with guns and knives, and Secret Service officers shot and wounded a man who fired at them earlier this month near the Washington Monument.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said the suspect in Saturday’s shooting had a “possible obsession with our Country’s most cherished structure.” He also used the shooting to promote the ballroom he is seeking to build on the site of the White House’s former East Wing, saying the shooting “goes to show how important it is, for all future Presidents, to get, what will be, the most safe and secure space of its kind ever built in Washington, D.C.” Trump is asking Congress for $1 billion for security additions for the White House campus, including the ballroom.

Best had a previous run-in with law enforcement near the White House, according to District of Columbia court records. He was arrested last July for attempting to enter White House grounds near a different checkpoint. He failed to heed officers’ commands to stop, claimed to be Jesus Christ and said he wanted to be arrested.

Best was a track and field athlete at Dundalk High School, from which he graduated in 2023.

A woman who identified herself as Best’s mother told The Washington Post that she learned about the shooting on social media and was in disbelief. She said her son “was never violent, regardless of what people are posting.”
