The Department of Homeland Security delivered a harsh statement in response to the charges. Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis condemned the actions of the accused, stating, “These individuals committed an atrocious act by shooting multiple people, leading to the death of an unborn child. They now face serious charges, including homicide and aggravated assault. Such a heinous crime underscores that these criminal illegal aliens should never have been in our country.”

Bis expressed relief that Dallas law enforcement collaborates with ICE, which will aid in ensuring these individuals are held accountable and prevented from causing further harm within the community.

Among those charged is 17-year-old Yeremy Alexander Zapata Aleman, whose arrest for capital murder was confirmed on May 3, 2026, as documented by the Dallas County Jail. The community now awaits justice for the senseless loss of life and the impact of this violent act.

Yeremy Alexander Zapata Aleman, 17, of Honduras, and Keyner Ariel Calero Jiron, 20, of Nicaragua, who both crossed the border illegally, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), are accused of the murder after an argument in a 7-Eleven parking lot led to a drive-by shooting and later a police chase, KDFW reported.

The incident occurred May 3, around 12:40 a.m.

The pregnant teen was riding with another person who confronted Zapata Aleman and Calero Jiron from a vehicle before leaving the 7-Eleven. The victims reported that, shortly thereafter, the two suspects followed them from the parking lot.

Calero Jiron was allegedly driving the car when the shots rang out, striking the victim and her unborn child. Another vehicle was also struck by gunfire, but the driver was uninjured.

When the victim, who was 22 weeks pregnant, told police she was carrying a child, she was taken to nearby Baylor Hospital where a cesarean section was performed. The baby did not survive.

Police later located Calero Jiron’s vehicle and say he led them on a pursuit, eventually crashing.

Police said they found cocaine and MDMA in the car.

Along with the murder charges, both suspects were charged with five counts of felony aggravated assault and one count of cocaine possession.

Calero Jiron was also charged with one count of unlawfully carrying a weapon.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — On Thursday evening, Texas executed its 600th inmate since 1982, marking a grim milestone with the death of a man deemed intellectually disabled by both prosecution and defense experts. This execution was carried out for the murder of a 77-year-old retired college professor.

Edward Busby Jr.’s life was ended at 8:11 p.m. via lethal injection at Huntsville’s state penitentiary, following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to lift a stay regarding his intellectual disabilities claims. His attorneys had launched a series of last-ditch legal maneuvers in an attempt to halt the execution.

Busby was sentenced to death for the suffocation of Laura Lee Crane, a former professor at Texas Christian University. According to prosecutors, Crane was kidnapped from a grocery store parking lot in January 2004 and left to die in the trunk of her car, her face tightly bound with duct tape over her mouth and nose.

This execution marks the 600th since Texas reinstated the death penalty over four decades ago. It also represents the fourth execution in Texas this year and the 12th across the United States. Additionally, on Thursday, Oklahoma carried out the execution of Raymond Johnson for the murder of his ex-girlfriend and her 7-month-old daughter nearly two decades ago.

When given the opportunity for a final statement, Busby expressed repeated apologies and sought forgiveness.

“I am so sorry for what happened,” he said while strapped to the death chamber gurney. “Miss Crane was a lovely woman. I never meant anything bad to happen to her.” He said he wished he could “take it all back” and added he had “no right to get in that car.”

“I’ll take the blame if that helps.”

He said he had surrendered his life to God and urged a sister, who was praying and watching through a window a short distance away, to find a church and “pick up your cross.”

“I’m here because this is the will of God,” he said before the injection got underway.

As the lethal dose of the sedative pentobarbital began flowing, he took a sharp breath, closed his eyes and gasped. Then he made snoring sounds that got progressively quieter. Within 40 seconds, all movement and sounds ceased. He was pronounced dead 38 minutes afterward.

Busby’s execution had been in doubt after the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last week issued a stay of execution to further review his claims of intellectual disability. But the Supreme Court overturned the stay Thursday at the request of the Texas Attorney General’s Office. The attorney general’s office had argued that similar appeals were previously rejected and were “meritless” and based on “conflicting evidence.”

Busby’s lawyers quickly sought another stay but it was denied by a lower court.

The Supreme Court in 2002 had barred the execution of intellectually disabled people. But it has given states some discretion to decide how to determine such disabilities.

Busby’s attorneys had argued against putting him to death because a defense expert as well as one hired by the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office, which prosecuted the case, both found he was intellectually disabled.

The district attorney’s office had previously recommended Busby’s sentence be reduced to life in prison. But the trial judge in Busby’s case disagreed with the findings of intellectual disability and in 2023 upheld the death sentence.

In a statement Wednesday, the district attorney’s office said it requested Thursday’s execution date because it believed that under current law Busy was not intellectually disabled.

Two other prior execution dates for Busby had been delayed by courts.

Prosecutors have said Busby and his co-defendant, Kathleen Latimer, abducted Crane in her car from a Fort Worth grocery store parking lot and later put in her vehicle’s trunk as they drove around. Prosecutors said she died in the trunk after suffocating from having 23 feet (7 meters) of duct tape wrapped over her entire face.

Busby was subsequently arrested in Oklahoma City driving Crane’s car and led authorities to her body in Oklahoma just north of the state line with Texas.

Latimer is in prison serving a life sentence for murder.

Bryan Mark Rigg, an author and historian who represented the Crane family as a witness to the execution, said they “neither support or oppose the death penalty. However, they are united in their respect for the rule of law.”

Rigg said as a child he was a student of Crane’s, who for decades helped children overcome learning disabilities and “was discarded in a field like a piece of trash.” He said the execution was not about vengeance but “accountability under the law and about remembering the life of an extraordinary educator.”

Recently, an outbreak linked to backyard poultry has led to numerous hospitalizations and one fatality due to a strain of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had previously issued a warning about a Salmonella Saintpaul outbreak among individuals who had been in contact with poultry.

Initially, the outbreak affected 34 individuals, with 13 requiring hospitalization, across 13 different states.

In the latest development, shared on Thursday, the number of cases has surged to 184, with 53 hospitalizations and one death now recorded in 31 states. Additionally, new strains such as Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Mbandaka have emerged.

The CDC noted an unusually high number of cases involving individuals who have interacted with ducks, marking the largest outbreak of its kind.

Salmonella infections trigger diarrhea and stomach cramps within six hours and six days of infection, and symptoms normally resolve within four to seven days.

But in those most at risk, including children under five and adults over 50, the bacteria can spread to the bloodstream and cause the potentially fatal complication sepsis.

Doctors treat the infection with antibiotics, but, in cases where the bacteria are resistant, it severely limits options and raises risks of serious complications.

Kentucky has seen the highest number of cases so far with 22, followed by 21 in Michigan, 17 in Wisconsin, 15 in Ohio and 10 each in Idaho, Indiana and Maine. 

The death was reported in a patient from Washington state, which has nine cases.  

According to the CDC, the Saintpaul strain has infected 133 people, the Enteritidis has infected 32 people and the Mbandaka has infected 19. 

People became sick between January 17, 2026 and April 20, 2026. 

While cases have risen since the first notice, the CDC noted: ‘The true number of sick people in an outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses.’

Not everyone infected with Salmonella receives treatment or testing for the bacteria. 

Patients range in age from less than a year old to 86. About one-quarter of patients are under five years old. 

Of the 141 people interviewed, 110, or 78 percent, reported contact with backyard poultry. 

Of 65 patients with Salmonella Saintpaul who reported poultry contact, 51 reported contact with chicks or chickens and 35 reported contact with ducklings or ducks. 

Of 25 patients with more specific information, 16 specified contact with Pekin ducks.

The CDC is investigating a link between the cases. Of 70 people who reported owning backyard poultry, 61 purchased the animals since January but have reported getting them from various sources, including agricultural retail stores. 

The outbreak strains have been linked to five hatcheries and the CDC is working with states to notify the hatcheries, suppliers and any additional connected sources.

Investigators in Ohio have collected samples from backyard poultry and the boxes used to ship the animals to stores. 

Testing showed that the Salmonella Saintpaul and Mbandaka found in these samples were the same strains as those found in sick people.

Of the 184 human samples taken, 133 were predicted to be resistant to fosfomycin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic often used to treat salmonella infections. All six of the animal samples taken were also shown to be resistant to fosfomycin. 

Fifty-nine of the human samples were also found to be resistant to one or more other common types of antibiotics.  

Health officials have urged people who have contact with poultry to wash their hands with soap and water immediately after touching the birds, their eggs or anything in the area where they live or roam.

People have also been urged not to kiss poultry, not to eat or drink around them and to ensure children are always supervised with birds and wash their hands properly afterwards.

Those who believe they were sickened in the outbreak have been urged to contact their health provider.

Chickens and other poultry often carry salmonella in their intestines and do not show any symptoms.

They can spread the bacteria via their feces, contaminated feathers and eggs.

Humans may pick up the bacteria after holding backyard poultry or touching their eggs or living spaces.

Health officials said: ‘Backyard poultry, like chickens and ducks, can carry Salmonella germs even if they look healthy and clean.

‘These germs can easily spread to anything in the areas where the poultry live and roam.’

The previous mayor of a small Kansas town, who admitted to voting unlawfully in multiple elections, has surrendered to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as of Wednesday.

Jose Ceballos-Armendariz, who holds a Mexican green card, presented himself at the ICE office located in Wichita, according to a report by FOX4KC. Currently, he is detained at ICE’s Chase County facility.

Outside the detention center, Ceballos expressed his uncertainty, stating, “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t know where they’re going to take me and what I can and can’t do inside there.”

Fox News Digital has contacted Ceballos’ legal representative for further comments.

Ceballos, who formerly served as mayor of Coldwater, Kansas, for two terms, pleaded guilty in April to three counts of disorderly election conduct following a prosecution by Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach’s office.

He was issued a green card in 1990 and applied for U.S. citizenship in February. Ceballos also has a prior conviction for battery from 1995.

On his citizenship application, Ceballos allegedly falsely claimed that he had never previously claimed to be a U.S. citizen.

He stated he thought his status as a green card holder with legal permanent residency gave him the right to vote in U.S. elections, FOXKC reported. Ceballos said he felt “misled” because he believed his situation would be resolved following his plea deal.

“Obviously, we’ll go through the process,” Ceballos said. “We’ll do what they want us to do and, you know, take one day at a time. Just do what they ask; that is my goal.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital, DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis advocated for the SAVE America Act, the federal legislation designed to require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.

“The SAVE program is a critical tool for state and local governments to safeguard the integrity of elections across the country,” she said. “President Trump has been unequivocal: Nothing is more fundamental than the integrity and security of our elections. That’s why the Trump Administration has repeatedly called on Congress to pass the SAVE America Act — commonsense legislation that requires voters to present photo ID and implements other critical measures to protect federal elections from fraud. Our elections belong to American citizens, not foreign citizens.”

Since April 2025, more than 24,000 cases have been identified by SAVE as potential non-U.S. citizens who were on voter rolls, DHS said. Those cases have been referred to ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for further investigation.

Ceballos’ attorney, Jess Hoeme, told the news outlet that his client was brought to the United States from Mexico when he was 4 years old. He added that Ceballos was encouraged to register to vote at age 18 on the spot during a school field trip to the Comanche County courthouse.

“I thought our system was smarter and better than this,” Hoeme said. “I thought there was a degree of humanity and dignity included in the process. That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.”
